Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To detect whether and where brain functional connectivity exists in the resting state of patients with early-onset schizophrenia by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS:Nineteen early-onset schizophrenic patients were diagnosed with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) of American Psychiatric Association. The 19 early-onset schizophrenic patients and another 19 healthy volunteers underwent fMRI in resting state. Cingulate gyrus was selected as region of interest and the difference was analyzed in the cingulate gyrus functional connectivity pattern between the 19 patients with early-onset schizophrenia (EOS) and 19 matched controls using resting-state fMRI. A two-sample t test was performed on the individual in a voxel by voxel manner. RESULTS:Statistical map was set a combined threshold of P<0.005 and the number of voxel>20. Functional connectivity in the resting state was abnormal in the patients,including decreased functional connectivity and increased functional connectivity. The abnormal area was distributed all over the brain. The brain area with decreased functional connectivity included bilateral posterior cerebellar lobes, superior frontal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, gyrus rectus,hippocampus, cuneus gyrus,fusiform gyrus,middle occipital gyrus,inferior occipital gyrus, right inferior temporal gyrus,right middle temporal gyrus, and right angular gyrus. The brain area with increased functional connectivity included left middle temporal and left inferior temporal gyrus. CONCLUSION:Abnormal cingulate gyrus functional connectivity of schizophrenia might exist in the resting state. Resting state fMRI is important for the research of schizophrenia.
Altered brain activity in the bilateral frontal cortices and neural correlation with cognitive impairment in schizophrenia

Abstract:Cognitive impairments are core aspects of schizophrenia and are highly related to poor outcomes. However, the effect of therapy on cognitive impairments remains unsatisfactory as its biological mechanisms are not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the disrupted intrinsic neural activity of the frontal areas and to further examine the functional connectivity of frontal areas related to cognitive impairments in schizophrenia. We collected brain imaging data using a 3T Siemens Prisma MRI system in 32 patients with schizophrenia and 34 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The mean fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (mfALFF) in the frontal regions was calculated and analyzed to evaluate regional neural activity alterations in schizophrenia. Seed regions were generated from clusters showing significant changes in mfALFF in schizophrenia, and its resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) with other brain regions were estimated to detect possible aberrant rs-FC indicating cognitive impairments in schizophrenia. We found that mfALFF in the bilateral frontal cortices was increased in schizophrenia. mfALFF-based rs-FC revealed that decreased rs-FC between left middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and left medial superior frontal gyrus (MFSG) was associated with poor delayed memory ( r = 0.566, Bonferroni-corrected p = 0.012). These findings demonstrate increased neural activity in the frontal cortices in schizophrenia. FC analysis revealed a diminished rs-FC pattern between the left MFG and left MSFG that was associated with cognitive impairments. These findings have provided deeper insight into the alterations in brain function related to specific domains of cognitive impairment and may provide evidence for precise interventions for cognitive deficits in schizophrenia.
Neuronal Dysfunction in Individuals at Early Stage of Schizophrenia, A Resting-State Fmri Study

Abstract:Schizophrenia has been associated with abnormal intrinsic brain activity, involving various cognitive impair-ments. Qualitatively similar abnormalities are seen in individuals at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis. In this study, resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) data were collected from 44 drug-naive first-episode schizophrenia (Dn-FES) patients, 48 UHR individuals, and 40 healthy controls (HCs). The fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluc-tuations (fALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo), and functional connectivity (FC), were performed to evaluate resting brain function. A support vector machine (SVM) was applied for classification analysis. Compared to HCs, both clinical groups showed increased fALFF in the central executive network (CEN), decreased ReHo in the ventral visual pathway (VVP) and decreased FC in temporal-sensorimotor regions. Excellent performance was achieved by using fALFF value in distinguishing both FES (sensitivity=83.21%, specificity=80.58%, accu-racy=81.37%, p=0.009) and UHR (sensitivity=75.88%, specificity=85.72%, accuracy=80.72%, p<0.001) from HC group. Moreover, the study highlighted the importance of frontal and temporal alteration in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. However, no fMRI features were observed that could well distinguish Dn-FES from UHR group. To conclude, fALFF in the CEN may provide potential power for identifying individuals at the early stage of schizophrenia and the alteration in the frontal and temporal lobe may be important to these individuals.
Head motion in children with ADHD during resting-state brain imaging

Abstract:Although head motion during scanning has been largely considered to reflect simply technical artifacts, there is growing evidence showing that the variable of head motion reflects valuable information regarding individual’s psychological and/or clinical factors. Detailed studies would not only help to deal with the head motion biases, but they also help researchers in understanding the mental disorders. In this study, children with ADHD and demographically-matched typically developing control (TDC) participants underwent rs-fMRI examination without any specific task, and six mean single head motion parameters (three translational and three rotational) and a summary motion index for each participant were obtained. We found that patients with ADHD showed specific patterns of head motion during scanning: motion was significantly increased in the ADHD group, which was mainly contributed by the motion around and along the superior-to-inferior direction. Furthermore, the cross-validation classification analyses showed that the head motion could accurately distinguish children with ADHD from the healthy controls. These results suggest that head motion during scanning reflects useful information about the participants and accounting for head motion from MRI data may be helpful for ADHD diagnosing and treatment with neuroimaging.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To explore the regional homogeneity of resting state brain activity in early onset schizophrenia using functional magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS:Schizophrenia or schizophreniform disorder was diagnosed according to DSM-IV-TR (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, fourth edition, text revision). A total of 18 adolescents with early-onset schizophrenia (EOS; onset of psychotic symptoms by age 18) and 18 age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers were tested in a resting-state fMRI scan. Regional homogeneity approach was used to analyze the functional imaging data,and statistical parametric mapping 5 (SPM5)was used to perform t-test in ReHo maps between the patients and controls. RESULTS:In comparison with the controls, the early-onset patients showed significantly decreased regional homogeneity in bilateral medial prefrontal cortex(P<0.001,uncorrected; voxel>20), but no brain regions showed significantly increased regional homogeneity in the patients. CONCLUSION:Regional homogeneity of resting state brain activities in EOS was decreased in bilateral medial prefrontal cortex. These abnormal changes may be involved in the psychopathology of schizophrenia.
Default mode network analysis in early onset schizophrenia using functional magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract:Objective:To explore the brain default mode network function connection in early onset schizophrenia using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Method:Twenty six adolescents with early-onset schizophrenia and 28 healthy volunteers were tested in a resting-state fMRI scan. Functional connectivity analy-sis was used to reconstruct the default network in patients and healthy volunteers. Results:Five significantly abnormal connections were found in the patients group. Three increased connections were the connections between:ventral medialprefrontal cortex ( MPFC) and right inferior temporal gyrus ( P = 0. 0078) ,ventral MPFC and left angular gyrus ( P = 0. 0091) ,ventral MPFC and dorsal MPFC ( P = 0. 0163). Two decreased connections were the connections between:right angular gyrus and right inferior semi-lunar lobule ( P = 0. 0223) ,left superior frontal gyrus and cerebellar tonsil( P = 0. 0294). Conclusion:Within the default network,the major abnormal connections are correlated to MPFC. The abnormalities could be the source of the abnormal of introspectively oriented mental actives.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To detect the differences in subcortical structures between patients with paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD) and normal subjects during movement preparation and execution.METHODS:The PKD patients performed a movement task, in which a CUE signal (preparation) indicated the movement sequence prior to the appearance of an imperative GO signal (execution). Event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and 3dDeconvolve program of AFNI were used to estimate the hemodynamic response function and to generate activation maps.RESULT:During movement preparation, the activated brain areas in PKD patients were less than those of normal subject, and there was no activation in basal ganglia in PKD patients. During execution, the activation was also less in PKD patients except in bilateral M1.CONCLUSION:During intermission, abnormalities of the brain still exist in PKD patients when during preparing or performing movement. The movement circuit in the brain displays an unusual state. The attack may be caused by reducing of inhibition in brain areas.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the structural differences between patients with first episode schizophrenia and normal controls using optimized voxel-based morphometry(VBM)study.Methods High resolution T_1 weighted images were obtained using 3.0 T MR from 13 first-episode,untreated schizophrenia and 13 age,sex,handechiess matched normal controls.Images were preprocessed by employing the optimized VBM and two sample t-test was used to detect differences between patients and normal controls with respect to both density and volume of gray matter in the brain.Results Patients with schizophrenia had significant lower gray matter density and gray matter volume generally distributed among bilateral hemispheres,especially in bilateral frontal and temporal lobes.However,no significant increase of gray matter density and gray matter volume was observed in these patients.Conclusions Optimized voxel-based morphometry study is an automatic and effective method to study psychological diseases such as schizophrenia.Compared with normal controls,patients with schizophrenia had significantly lower gray matter density and gray matter volume across the bilateral hemispheres.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>: Although previous studies have consistently demonstrated that neurocognitive and social cognitive impairments are commonly observed in schizophrenia, the neural substrates of deficits of cognitive function remain unclear, especially for the chronic schizophrenia. There has been little resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) study of cognitive function in chronic schizophrenia. In this study we aimed to investigate the changes of rs-fMRI signals with regional homogeneity (ReHo), and explore the correlations between abnormal regional activity and cognitive function in chronic schizophrenia.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>: Altogether 76 subjects, 37 patients with chronic schizophrenia and 39 normal controls matched approximately for age, gender and education level were enrolled. All subjects were evaluated psychotic symptoms by Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and cognitive function by Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Conventional MRI and rs-fMRI were performed in all subjects. ReHo was calculated to measure the temporal synchronization of a given voxel and its neighboring voxels based on Kendall coefficient of concordance (KCC) in the rs-fMRI.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>: For the numbers of achieved categories, percentage of conceptual level response in the scores of WCST, the patient group was significantly lower than the control group (p<0.05). For the total errors, perseverative errors, non-perseverative errors, the patient group was significantly higher than the control group (p<0.05). Significant differences in ReHo were found in 11 regions (included five activated and five with decreased activity in the cerebrum and one with decreased activity in the cerebellum) in the chronic schizophrenia patients when compared with the normal controls. The ReHo map clusters that were significantly different between the two groups showed no significant correlation with clinical symptoms. Correlation of the whole brain with subscores of PANSS-T, PANSS-P, PANSS-N and WCST were significantly found in some regions.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>: The study identified five increased and six decreased spontaneous synchrony in the cerebrum and cerebellum in chronic schizophrenia patients compared to the normal matched controls, which were associated with positive, negative symptoms, and deficits of executive functioning.</p>

Abnormal Functional Connectivity of Motor Circuit in the Schizophrenic Patients with Tardive Dyskinesia: A Resting-State Fmri Study

Abstract:BackgroundAnimal and neuroimaging studies suggest that the volume of the motor-circuit region decreases in tardive dyskinesia (TD). This study examined the differences in functional connectivity within the motor circuit of patients with schizophrenia with and without TD to further clarify how the dysfunction is related to the pathogenesis of TD.MethodsFunctional magnetic resonance images were taken of 56 schizophrenic patients with TD (TD group), 64 without TD (non-TD group), and 68 healthy controls (HC group). The motor-circuit area was selected as the seed region for a whole brain resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) analysis. Psychopathological symptoms and TD severity were assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS), respectively. Group differences and correlations among 18 brain regions of interest (e.g., the global strength of connectivity between two regions) were analyzed.ResultsThe analysis of variance results were as follows: The three groups exhibited rsFC losses in the left primary motor cortex, bilateral parietal cortices, right postcentral gyrus, right putamen, right superior parietal lobule, right supplementary motor area and bilateral thalami (false discovery rate,p < 0.05). The TD group showed a significant rsFC loss between the right postcentral gyrus and the inferior frontal gyrus of the left triangular part when compared with the non-TD group (AlphaSim, p < 0.001), which was negatively correlated with the AIMS total score (r=-0.259, p = 0.03).ConclusionsThese findings may suggest dysfunction of the postcentral and inferior frontal gyri of the triangular part in patients with schizophrenia and TD.

Abstract:Background: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is an early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Regional homogeneity (ReHo) and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) are employed to explore spontaneous brain function in patients with aMCI. This study applied ALFF and ReHo indicators to analyze the neural mechanism of aMCI by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Methods: Twenty-six patients with aMCI were included and assigned to the aMCI group. The other 26 healthy subjects were included as a healthy control (HC) group. Rs-fMRI was performed for all participants in both groups. Between-group comparisons of demographic data and neuropsychological scores were analyzed using SPSS 25.0. Functional imaging data were analyzed using DPARSF and SPM12 software based on MATLAB 2017a. Gender, age, and years of education were used as covariates to obtain ALFF and ReHo indices. Results: Compared with HC group, ALFF decreased in the left fusiform gyrus, left superior temporal gyrus, and increased in the left cerebellum 8, left inferior temporal gyrus, left superior frontal gyrus (BA11), and right inferior temporal gyrus (BA20) in the aMCI group ( p < 0.05, FWE correction). In addition, ReHo decreased in the right middle temporal gyrus and right anterior cuneiform lobe, while it increased in the left middle temporal gyrus, left inferior temporal gyrus, cerebellar vermis, right parahippocampal gyrus, left caudate nucleus, right thalamus, and left superior frontal gyrus (BA6) ( p < 0.05, FWE correction). In the aMCI group, the ALFF of the left superior frontal gyrus was negatively correlated with Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score ( r = −0.437, p = 0.026), and the ALFF of the left superior temporal gyrus was positively correlated with the MoCA score ( r = 0.550, p = 0.004). The ReHo of the right hippocampus was negatively correlated with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score ( r = −0.434, p = 0.027), and the ReHo of the right middle temporal gyrus was positively correlated with MMSE score ( r = 0.392, p = 0.048). Conclusion: Functional changes in multiple brain regions rather than in a single brain region have been observed in patients with aMCI. The abnormal activity of multiple specific brain regions may be a manifestation of impaired central function in patients with aMCI.

Acute Leukemia in Down Syndrome Children in Hong Kong: Retrospective Review

Abstract:Background:Children with Down syndrome (DS) are at higher risk of developing acute leukemia. Treatment continues to evolve as we accumulate better understanding of the distinctive clinical and biological features of acute leukemia in DS patients. Procedure:A retrospective review of the clinical features, treatment outcomes, and survival of DS children with acute leukemia in Hong Kong from 1993 to 2013 was conducted. Patients were identified from the registry of the Hong Kong Pediatric Hematology and Oncology study group. Results:This cohort included a total of 29 patients with DS. Ten were diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and 19 had acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The mean follow-up duration was 8.3 years (range, 0.6 mo to 18.1 y). The 5-year overall survival and event-free survival for DS-acute lymphoblastic leukemia and DS-AML were 65.6%, 54.9%, 89.5%, and 89.5%, respectively. Conclusions:The clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of DS patients with acute leukemia in Hong Kong were comparable with results from other international study groups. Patients with DS-AML had a better prognosis.

Abstract:Head motion continues to be a major problem in fMRI research, particularly in developmental studies where an inverse relationship exists between head motion and age. Despite multifaceted and costly efforts to mitigate motion and motion-related signal artifact, few studies have characterized in-scanner head motion itself. This study leverages a large transdiagnostic public dataset (N = 1388, age 5-21y, The Healthy Brain Network Biobank) to characterize pediatric head motion in space, frequency, and time. We focus on practical aspects of head motion that could impact future study design, including comparing motion across groups (low, medium, and high movers), across conditions (movie-watching and rest), and between males and females. Analyses showed that in all conditions, high movers exhibited a different pattern of motion than low and medium movers that was dominated by x-rotation, and z- and y-translation. High motion spikes (>0.3mm) from all participants also showed this pitch-z-y pattern. Problematic head motion is thus composed of a single type of biomechanical motion, which we infer to be a nodding movement, providing a focused target for motion reduction strategies. A second type of motion was evident via spectral analysis of raw displacement data. This was observed in low and medium movers and was consistent with respiration rates. We consider this to be a baseline of motion best targeted in data preprocessing. Further, we found that males moved more than, but not differently from, females. Significant cross-condition differences in head motion were found. Movies had lower mean motion, and especially in high movers, movie-watching reduced within-run linear increases in head motion (i.e., temporal drift). Finally, we used intersubject correlations of framewise displacement (FD-ISCs) to assess for stimulus-correlated motion trends. Subject motion was more correlated in movie than rest, and 8 out of top 10 FD-ISC windows had FD below the mean. Possible reasons and future implications of these findings are discussed.
Altered regional homogeneity and cognitive impairments in first-episode schizophrenia: A resting-state fMRI study

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia consistently present pervasive cognitive deficits, but the neurobiological mechanism of cognitive impairments remains unclear. By analyzing regional homogeneity (ReHo) of resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, this study aimed to explore the association between brain functional alterations and cognitive deficits in first-episode schizophrenia (FES) with a relatively large sample.METHODS: A total of 187 patients with FES and 100 healthy controls from 3 independent cohorts underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance scans. The MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) was used to assess cognitive function. Partial correlation analysis was performed between abnormal ReHo values and the severity of symptoms and cognitive deficits.RESULTS: Compared with healthy controls, ReHo values increased in right superior frontal cortex and decreased in right anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), left middle occipital gyrus (MOG), left cuneus, right posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), and right superior occipital gyrus in schizophrenia patients. ReHo values in ACC, PCC and superior occipital gyrus were correlated with PANSS scores. In addition, ReHo values in ACC and MOG were negatively correlated with working memory; left cuneus was positively correlated with multiple cognitive domains (speed of processing, attention/vigilance and social cognition); PCC was positively correlated with verbal learning; right superior occipital gyrus was positively correlated with speed of processing and social cognition.CONCLUSION: In conclusion, we found widespread ReHo alterations and cognitive dysfunction in FES. Aging effect on head motion: A Machine Learning study on resting state fMRI data

Abstract:BackgroundResting-state-fMRI is a technique used to explore the functional brain architecture in term of brain networks and their interactions. However, the robustness of Resting-state-fMRI analysis is negatively affected by physiological noise caused by subject head motion. The aim of our study was to provide new knowledge about the effect of normal aging on the head motion signals.New MethodFor the first time, we proposed a method for evaluating the most sensitive head motion parameters linked to subjects'aging. We enrolled 14-young(9females; mean-age = 28 ± 4.07) and 14-elderly(9females; mean-age = 66 ± 5.19) subjects. Along three axes(X,Y,Z), we extracted six motions parameters which reflected the head's movements to characterize translations(x,y,z) and rotations(angles phi,theta,psi). We performed:1)univariate analysis for comparing the groups and correlation to investigate the relationship between age and movement parameters; 2)Support-Vector-Machine, using bootstrap and calculating the feature importance.ResultsStatistical analyses showed significant association between the aging and some motion's parameters(rotation psi; translations y and z). These results were also confirmed by multivariate analysis with Support-Vector-Machine that presented an AUC of 90%.Comparison to existing methodsThe proposed method shows that normal aging produces significant increase in head motion parameters, highlighting the critical effect of motion on resting data analyses in particular considering psi, y and z movements. To our knowledge and at the present, this represents the first study investigating the accurate characterization of motion parameters in aging.ConclusionsOur results have a high impact to improve healthy control recruitment and appropriately decreasing the risk of signal distortion, according to the age of enrolled subjects.

Abstract:Introduction: Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) affects older adults, but traditional approaches have limited the understanding of the neural mechanisms of SVD. This study aimed to explore the effects of SVD on brain regions and its association with cognitive decline using the four-dimensional (spatiotemporal) consistency of local neural activity (FOCA) method. Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging data from 42 patients with SVD and 38 healthy controls (HCs) were analyzed using the FOCA values. A two-sample t test was performed to compare the differences in FOCA values in the brain between the HCs and SVD groups. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to analyze the association of various brain regions with SVD scores. Results: The results revealed that the FOCA values in the right frontal_inf_oper, right temporal_pole_sup, and default mode network decreased, whereas those in the temporal_inf, hippocampus, basal ganglia, and cerebellum increased, in patients with SVD. Most of these varying brain regions were negatively correlated with SVD scores. Discussion: This study suggested that the FOCA approach might have the potential to provide useful insights into the understanding of the neurophysiologic mechanisms of patients with SVD.

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Schizophrenic Patients and Comparison Subjects During a Verbal Fluency Task

Abstract:Objective To study the changes in cortical activation of frontal lobes and temporal lobes between schizophrenic patients and comparison subjects during a verbal fluency task by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods Thirteen schizophrenic patients and 8 volunteers were studied during a verbal fluency task performance. fMRI of frontal lobes and temporal lobes was conducted at a GE 1.5 T Signa Horizon LX scanner while the subjects performed the task. Stimulus sequences were divided into six 30-second segments by using a task-activation paradigm that alternated between resting and stimulated states. Results Schizophrenic subjects demonstrated significantly less left frontal activation than comparison subjects during a word fluency task, and comparison subjects showed evidently more activation in left frontal lobes than in the right (P0.05). But there was no significant difference of the temporal activation between the two groups (P0.05). Conclusion These preliminary data suggest that fMRI has the sensitivity to detect the differences in activation between comparison subjects and schizophrenic patients during higher cortical functions.
An evaluation of the efficacy, reliability, and sensitivity of motion correction strategies for resting-state functional MRI

Abstract:Estimates of functional connectivity derived from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) are sensitive to artefacts caused by in-scanner head motion. This susceptibility has motivated the development of numerous denoising methods designed to mitigate motion-related artefacts. Here, we compare popular retrospective rs-fMRI denoising methods, such as regression of head motion parameters and mean white matter (WM) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (with and without expansion terms), aCompCor, volume censoring (e.g., scrubbing and spike regression), global signal regression and ICA-AROMA, combined into 19 different pipelines. These pipelines were evaluated across five different quality control benchmarks in four independent datasets associated with varying levels of motion. Pipelines were benchmarked by examining the residual relationship between in-scanner movement and functional connectivity after denoising; the effect of distance on this residual relationship; whole-brain differences in functional connectivity between high- and low-motion healthy controls (HC); the temporal degrees of freedom lost during denoising; and the test-retest reliability of functional connectivity estimates. We also compared the sensitivity of each pipeline to clinical differences in functional connectivity in independent samples of people with schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Our results indicate that (1) simple linear regression of regional fMRI time series against head motion parameters and WM/CSF signals (with or without expansion terms) is not sufficient to remove head motion artefacts; (2) aCompCor pipelines may only be viable in low-motion data; (3) volume censoring performs well at minimising motion-related artefact but a major benefit of this approach derives from the exclusion of high-motion individuals; (4) while not as effective as volume censoring, ICA-AROMA performed well across our benchmarks for relatively low cost in terms of data loss; (5) the addition of global signal regression improved the performance of nearly all pipelines on most benchmarks, but exacerbated the distance-dependence of correlations between motion and functional connectivity; and (6) group comparisons in functional connectivity between healthy controls and schizophrenia patients are highly dependent on preprocessing strategy. We offer some recommendations for best practice and outline simple analyses to facilitate transparent reporting of the degree to which a given set of findings may be affected by motion-related artefact.

Abstract:The impact of in-scanner motion on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data has a notorious reputation in the neuroimaging community. State-ofthe-art guidelines advise to scrub out excessively corrupted frames as assessed by a composite framewise displacement (FD) score, to regress out models of nuisance variables, and to include average FD as a covariate in group-level analyses. Here, we studied individual motion time courses at time points typically retained in fMRI analyses. We observed that even in this set of putatively clean time points, motion exhibited a very clear spatiotemporal structure, so that we could distinguish subjects into four groups of movers with varying characteristics Then, we showed that this spatiotemporal motion cartography tightly relates to a broad array of anthropometric, behavioral and clinical factors. Convergent results were obtained from two different analytical perspectives: univariate assessment of behavioral differences across mover subgroups unraveled defining markers, while subsequent multivariate analysis broadened the range of involved factors and clarified that multiple motion/behavior modes of covariance overlap in the data. Our results demonstrate that even the smaller episodes of motion typically retained in fMRI analyses carry structured, behaviorally relevant information. They call for further examinations of possible biases in current regression-based motion correction strategies.
