Abstract:The rapidly developing computing and communication technologies improve the autonomy of individual vehicles on the one hand and facilitate the coordination among vehicles on the other. In the context of dynamic speed management, this study considers a platoon of intelligent vehicles that are required to maintain desired inter-vehicle spaces and to respond to speed changes in a collision-free, stable and cooperative way. The platoon is modelled as a cascaded network with linear longitudinal vehicle dynamics, independent physical constraints, and coupling safety constraints. In the case of global information sharing, the authors first propose a centralised collision-free solution on the basis of model predictive control that guarantees asymptotic platoon tracking of speed changes and satisfaction of system constraints during the transient process. A cooperative distributed approach is then further proposed on the basis of the alternating direction method of multipliers resulting in a scheme involving communication only with the roadside infrastructure, e.g. the speed manager. Vehicles in a platoon conduct parallel computation while still achieving global optimal performance and coordination with respect to the collision avoidance constraints. Convergence properties of the distributed solutions are established for the concerned vehicle platoon problem. Simulation results show satisfactory platoon performance and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.
Cooperative Driving of Heterogeneous Uncertain Nonlinear Connected and Autonomous Vehicles via Distributed Switching Robust PID-like Control

Abstract:In this work, the leading-tracking control problem for heterogeneous and uncertain nonlinear autonomous vehicles is addressed. These latter communicate their status information over a wireless communication network and engage in cooperative movements in extra-urban traffic environment. The nonlinear vehicle dynamics are affected by time-varying parameter uncertainties, and the air-drag reduction caused by platooning is explicitly considered. The variation of V2V links as a result of cooperative manoeuvres is modelled by incorporating switching into the communication network topology. To this aim, we develop a novel robust distributed Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID)-like control protocol which ensures that all vehicles within the platoon robustly track the behaviour of the leader, despite the presence of both unknown parameters uncertainties and network switching. The analytical stability of the proposed control strategy is demonstrated using Lyapunov theory. Sufficient stability conditions are expressed as a set of feasible Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) whose solution allows the robust control gains to be properly tuned. The effectiveness of the approach is evaluated via the Mixed Traffic Simulator (MiTraS) co-simulation platform, which combines MATLAB/Simulink with SUMO microscopic traffic simulator. The exhaustive simulation analysis, involving the Monte Carlo method, is carried out considering different cooperative platooning manoeuvres, and confirms the theoretical derivation.

Abstract:Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control, Ahead of Print. This paper develops a resilient cooperative platoon control protocol for vehicle following systems under unreliable switching communication networks with cyber composite attacks, which includes actuator and sensors attacks, as well as denial of service (DoS) attacks. In this framework, to achieve leader-following platoon task, a novel resilient distributed adaptive control algorithm is designed by exploiting relative neighborhood information. First, a switching resilient turning mechanism with controller parameter updating laws is introduced into platoon controller architecture, which can compensate sensor and actuator attacks. Second, a topology-dependent analysis shows that cooperative leader-following platoon objective is achieved under some sufficient conditions, then the robust stability of the closed-loop coordination tracking error system is built. Finally, the simulation studies on a platoon of autonomous vehicles are provided to testify the design.

Secure Distributed Adaptive Platooning Control of Automated Vehicles Over Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks Under Denial-of-Service Attacks

Abstract:This article deals with the problem of secure distributed adaptive platooning control of automated vehicles over vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) in the presence of intermittent denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. The platoon, which is wirelessly connected via directed vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, is composed of a group of following vehicles subject to unknown heterogeneous nonlinearities and external disturbance inputs, and a leading vehicle subject to unknown nonlinearity and external disturbance as well as an unknown control input. Under such a platoon setting, this article aims to accomplish secure distributed platoon formation tracking with the desired longitudinal spacing and the same velocities and accelerations guided by the leader regardless of the simultaneous presence of nonlinearities, uncertainties, and DoS attacks. First, a new logical data packet processor is developed on each vehicle to identify the intermittent DoS attacks via verifying the time-stamps of the received data packets. Then, a scalable distributed neural-network-based adaptive control design approach is proposed to achieve secure platooning control. It is proved that under the established design procedure, the vehicle state estimation errors and platoon tracking errors can be regulated to reside in small neighborhoods around zero. Finally, comparative simulation studies are provided to substantiate the effectiveness and merits of the proposed control design approach on maintaining the desired platooning performance and attack tolerance.

Abstract:Dear Editor, This letter contributes to designing a resilient event-triggered controller for connected automated vehicles under cyber attacks, including denial-of-service (DoS) and deception attacks. To characterize the effect of DoS attacks, the effective intervals of the attack are redivided based on the sampling period. Then, a resilient distributed event-triggering mechanism is proposed to compensate for the sabotage of DoS attacks and reduce the amount of transmitted data. Since the communication channel transmits the data only at the trigger instant, deception attacks may occur at this instant and be transmitted to each vehicle in superposition with the normal signal. Therefore, we construct stochastic models satisfying Bernoulli distribution to describe the false information injected by the attackers. Based on the above framework, an attack-resilient control strategy is proposed to resist the impact of cyber attacks. Then, sufficient conditions are established to achieve stability of vehicular platoons, and a co-design strategy regarding the control gain and triggering parameter matrices is given. Finally, the simulation results are provided to substantiate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper investigates the resilient distributed secure output path following control problem of heterogeneous autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs) subject to cyber attacks based on reinforcement learning algorithm. Most existing results are subject to the same attack models for all communication channels, however multiple channels launched by different attackers are considered in this paper. First, a predictor-acknowledgement clock algorithm for each vehicle is proposed to judge whether the communication channel among neighboring vehicles is attacked or not by receiving or transmitting an acknowledgement. Then, a resilient distributed predictor is proposed to predict the pinning vehicle's state for each vehicle. In addition, a resilient local control protocol consisting of the feedforward state provided by the predictor and the local feedback state of each vehicle is developed for the output path following problem, which is further converted to the optimal control problem by designing a discounted performance function. Discounted algebraic Riccati equations (AREs) are derived to address the optimal control problem. An off-policy reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm is put forward to learn the solution of discounted AREs online without any prior knowledge of vehicles' dynamics. It is shown that the RL-based output path following control problem of AGVs imposed by cyber attacks can be achieved in an optimal manner. Finally, a numerical example is provided to verify the effectiveness of theoretical analysis.
Attack-Resilient Design for Connected and Automated Vehicles

Abstract:By sharing local sensor information via Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) wireless communication networks, Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is a technology that enables Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) to drive autonomously on the highway in closely-coupled platoons. The use of CACC technologies increases safety and the traffic throughput, and decreases fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. However, CAVs heavily rely on embedded software, hardware, and communication networks that make them vulnerable to a range of cyberattacks. Cyberattacks to a particular CAV compromise the entire platoon as CACC schemes propagate corrupted data to neighboring vehicles potentially leading to traffic delays and collisions. Physics-based monitors can be used to detect the presence of False Data Injection (FDI) attacks to CAV sensors; however, unavoidable system disturbances and modelling uncertainty often translates to conservative detection results. Given enough system knowledge, adversaries are still able to launch a range of attacks that can surpass the detection scheme by hiding within the system disturbances and uncertainty -- we refer to this class of attacks as \textit{stealthy FDI attacks}. Stealthy attacks are hard to deal with as they affect the platoon dynamics without being noticed. In this manuscript, we propose a co-design methodology (built around a series convex programs) to synthesize distributed attack monitors and $H_{\infty}$ CACC controllers that minimize the joint effect of stealthy FDI attacks and system disturbances on the platoon dynamics while guaranteeing a prescribed platooning performance (in terms of tracking and string stability). Computer simulations are provided to illustrate the performance of out tools.

Abstract:Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is a vehicular technology that allows groups of vehicles on the highway to form in closely-coupled automated platoons to increase highway capacity and safety. The underlying mechanism behind CACC is the use of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) wireless communication networks to transmit acceleration commands to adjacent vehicles in the platoon. However, the use of V2V networks leads to increased vulnerabilities against faults and cyberattacks. Here, we address the problem of increasing the robustness of CACC schemes against cyberattacks by using multiple V2V networks and a data fusion algorithm. The idea is to transmit acceleration commands multiple times through different communication channels to create redundancy at the receiver side. We propose a data fusion algorithm to estimate of the true acceleration command, and isolate compromised channels. Finally, we propose a robust $H_{infty }$ controller that reduces the joint effect of fusion errors and sensor/channel noise in the platooning performance (tracking performance and string stability). Simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance of our approach.

Abstract:This study proposes a reliable longitudinal distributed control strategy for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) in the presence of communication cyberattacks. The proposed strategy is designed to utilize dependable measurements from onboard sensors to evaluate the reliability of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) information and enhance the platoon string stability in an integrated manner. Specifically, this paper proposes a real-time reliability evaluation mechanism for the ego vehicle based on sensing and communication information from multiple predecessors, employing an upper-tailed chi-squared test. The mechanism is then incorporated into a distributed multi-predecessor linear feedback controller to adaptively weigh the preceding vehicles' information, ensuring robustness against cyberattacks and maintaining the string stability of the vehicular platoon. To better understand the whole framework, sufficient conditions of true string stability and pseudo string stability are theoretically derived, unveiling the disturbance amplification jointly impacted by measurement accuracy of onboard sensors, cyberattack severity in V2V communication, and control parameters. Numerical experiments are conducted to validate the controller across various types of communication cyberattacks. The results suggest that the proposed control strategy can significantly alleviate the impact of cyberattacks and simultaneously dampen traffic oscillations effectively.

Abstract:This article concentrates on the distributed adaptive secure control on lane change maneuver of interconnected unmanned vehicular platoon (IUVP) system which is established base on vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) technology, while the whole system exposed to compound cyber attacks, including Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack and replay attack. Firstly, with a VANET based information flow communication topology, an IUVP system including longitudinal and lateral dynamics is considered in this paper. Then a distributed secure platoon lane change control scheme is designed by using recursive method to guarantee the stability and robustness of the whole systems under compound attacks. An event triggered mechanism is designed to save communication bandwidth. The stability of the whole system is then verified via rigorous mathematical proof. Finally, the IUVP system is tested by utilizing MATLAB-Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) joint simulation platform, the feasibility of the proposed strategy in relative realistic environment is confirmed, and provide the root mean square error to evaluate the safety control performance of the system.

Abstract:Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is one of the driving applications of vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) and promises to bring more efficient and faster transportation through cooperative behavior between vehicles. In CACC, vehicles exchange information, which is relied on to partially automate driving; however, this reliance on cooperation requires resilience against attacks and other forms of misbehavior. In this paper, we propose a rigorous attacker model and an evaluation framework for this resilience by quantifying the attack impact, providing the necessary tools to compare controller resilience and attack effectiveness simultaneously. Although there are significant differences between the resilience of the three analyzed controllers, we show that each can be attacked effectively and easily through either jamming or data injection. Our results suggest a combination of misbehavior detection and resilient control algorithms with graceful degradation are necessary ingredients for secure and safe platoons.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a novel fully distributed finite-time cooperative control law able to solve the platoon formation control problem for a network of autonomous vehicles, whose dynamics is represented via the third-order drivetrain linear model. Internet of Vehicle (IoV) communication latencies have been considered and modeled via heterogeneous time-varying delays. The resulting control protocol is computed via outdated information and embeds vehicles acceleration error, which allows improving control reactivity during sudden acceleration/deceleration maneuvers. The finite-time stability of the vehicular network has been analyzed and proved by leveraging Multi-Agent Systems (MASs) paradigm along with Lyapunov-Krasovskii method. This latter leads to stability conditions in the forms of Linear Matrix Inequalities, whose solution allows finding control gains and state trajectories threshold. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the theoretical derivation in guaranteeing the cooperative driving despite the presence of IoV communication latencies.
Secure Dynamic Nonlinear Heterogeneous Vehicle Platooning: Denial-of-Service Cyber-Attack Case

Abstract:Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), as a large class of cyber-physical systems, have recently emerged as an effective autonomous driving mechanism in intelligent transportation systems in terms of improvement in safety, fuel economy, road throughput, and driving comfort. This chapter deals with a Secure Distributed Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (Secure–DNMPC) algorithm consisting of (i) detection and (ii) mitigation phases to securely control a string of CAVs, namely vehicle platoons. The approach ensures the desired control performance of a nonlinear heterogeneous platoon equipped by different communication topologies under the premise of the existence of Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks. The proposed method is also capable of providing safe and secure control of dynamic platoons in which arbitrary vehicles might perform cut-in and/or cut-out maneuvers. Convergence time and stability analysis of the system are also investigated in some cases. Furthermore, to handle DoS attacks modeled by an exceeding time delay in inter-vehicular data transmission, we propose the integration of an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) design within the controller resulting in a novel Secure–DNMPC–UKF co-design. This, in essence, estimates the delayed system states and feeds the predicted values to the Secure–DNMPC, which efficiently mitigates the attack effects. Simulation results demonstrate the fruitfulness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Due to the utilization of Cellular Vehicle-toEverything (C-V2X) wireless communication network, the communication process of connected automated vehicle platoon systems is susceptible to external malicious attacks. This paper proposes an effective distributed control framework for connected automated vehicle platoon systems in the presence of spoofing cyber attacks. Firstly, Bernoulli random variables are utilized to model the random nature of spoofing attacks within the platoon systems, and an adaptive event-based communication strategy is adopted to optimize network resource utilization and prevent redundant information transmission. Secondly, a distributed state-feedback controller is designed, leveraging both the adaptive event-triggered approach and the linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach, considering the influence of random and energylimited spoofing attacks. Thirdly, through the application of the Lyapunov stability theory, the system with the platooning controller, despite the presence of spoofing cyber attacks, is proved to be asymptotically stable. Finally, numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Abstract:This paper investigates secure control for homogeneous vehicle platoons in the presence of false data injection attacks with low communication and computation costs. We consider a scenario where each vehicle within the platoon transmits a local state vector to multiple neighboring vehicles. By leveraging these shared vectors from both preceding and following vehicles, we propose a novel and effective resilient controller for vehicle platoons against node/communication link attacks. More specifically, each vehicle determines the local state deviation vectors from neighboring vehicles. It then eliminates the vectors that are farthest from the origin, with the number of removed vectors equivalent to the maximum number of attacks. This approach offers a considerable advantage by mitigating the effects of abnormality and manipulation, making it robust against arbitrary information tampering within a pre-defined upper boundary for manipulated broadcast information. Importantly, we establish specific conditions for the proposed resilient design to guarantee the internal stability of the vehicle platoon under attacks. Extensive simulations and experiments involving four TurtleBot3s are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed resilient controller.

Abstract:Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) are considered a hot area of research in the field of intelligent transportation systems. However, over the past few years, cybersecurity threats have posed significant challenges to such systems, given the ever‐evolving automotive industry. Thus, there is a growing need to design resilient control strategies to address the issue of cyberattacks. This article proposes the design of a distributed multiagent expert control scheme for cyberattack‐resilient control of CAVs. The study implemented an event‐triggered consensus‐based attack detection scheme capable of distinguishing between replay (RA), denial‐of‐service (DoS), and false data injection (FDI) attacks. The attacks in this study occur randomly, are bounded and time‐varying, and can overlap with each other. It was demonstrated that by considering an estimator error bound ε for the attacked signal reconstruction, the SMC controller in feedback with a vehicle remains stable in the sense of Lyapunov. Conditions were then provided that guarantee global asymptotic stability for a minimum dwell‐time constraint T, and the platoon was shown to be string stable for the minimum distance between vehicles, denoted as dˇcth. Finally, the performance of the control strategy was evaluated using multiple performance indices, considering platoons of varying sizes.

Abstract:Cooperative driving, enabled by Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication, is expected to significantly contribute to the transportation system's safety and efficiency. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC), a major cooperative driving application, has been the subject of many studies in recent years. The primary motivation behind using CACC is to reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic flow, traffic throughput, and highway capacity. Since the information flow between cooperative vehicles can significantly affect the dynamics of a platoon, the design and performance of control components are tightly dependent on the communication component performance. In addition, the choice of Information Flow Topology (IFT) can affect certain platoons properties such as stability and scalability. Although cooperative vehicles perception can be expanded to multiple predecessors information by using V2X communication, the communication technologies still suffer from scalability issues. Therefore, cooperative vehicles are required to predict each other's behavior to compensate for the effects of non-ideal communication. The notion of Model-Based Communication (MBC) was proposed to enhance cooperative vehicles perception under non-ideal communication by introducing a new flexible content structure for broadcasting joint vehicles dynamic/drivers behavior models. By utilizing a non-parametric (Bayesian) modeling scheme, i.e., Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), and the MBC concept, this paper develops a discrete hybrid stochastic model predictive control approach and examines the impact of communication losses and different information flow topologies on the performance and safety of the platoon. The results demonstrate an improvement in response time and safety using more vehicles information, validating the potential of cooperation to attenuate disturbances and improve traffic flow and safety.
Trust-Aware Resilient Control and Coordination of Connected and Automated Vehicles

Abstract:We address the security of a network of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) cooperating to navigate through a conflict area. Adversarial attacks such as Sybil attacks can cause safety violations resulting in collisions and traffic jams. In addition, uncooperative (but not necessarily adversarial) CAVs can also induce similar adversarial effects on the traffic network. We propose a decentralized resilient control and coordination scheme that mitigates the effects of adversarial attacks and uncooperative CAVs by utilizing a trust framework. Our trust-aware scheme can guarantee safe collision free coordination and mitigate traffic jams. Simulation results validate the theoretical guarantee of our proposed scheme, and demonstrate that it can effectively mitigate adversarial effects across different traffic scenarios.

Abstract:In a platoon, multiple autonomous vehicles engage in data exchange to navigate toward their intended destination. Within this network, a designated leader shares its status information with followers based on a predefined communication graph. However, these vehicles are susceptible to disturbances, leading to deviations from their intended routes. Denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, a significant type of cyber threat, can impact the motion of the leader. This paper addresses the destabilizing effects of DoS attacks on platoons and introduces a novel vehicular resilient control strategy to restore stability. Upon detecting and measuring a DoS attack, modeled with a time-varying delay, the proposed method initiates a process to retrieve the attacked leader. Through a newly designed switching system, the attacked leader transitions to a follower role, and a new leader is identified within a restructured platoon configuration, enabling the platoon to maintain consensus. Specifically, in the event of losing the original leader due to a DoS attack, the remaining vehicles do experience destabilization. They adapt their motions as a cohesive network through a distributed resilient controller. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated through an illustrative case study, showing its applicability in real-world scenarios.

Abstract:Platoons of autonomous vehicles are being investigated as a way to increase road capacity and fuel efficiency. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is an approach to achieve such platoons, in which vehicles collaborate using wireless communication. While this collaboration improves performance, it also makes the vehicles vulnerable to cyber-attacks. In this paper the performance of a sliding mode observer (SMO) based approach to cyber-attack detection is analysed, considering simultaneous attacks on the communication and local sensors. To this end, the considered cyber-attacks are divided into three classes for which relevant theoretical properties are proven. Furthermore, the harm that attacks within each of these classes can do to the system while avoiding detection is analysed based on simulation examples.
