Abstract:The two texts presented here--Regimento proueytoso contra ha pestenença [literally, "useful regime against pestilence"] and Modus curandi cum balsamo ["curing method using balm"]--represent the extent of Portugal's known medical library until circa 1530, produced in gothic letters by foreign printers: Germany's Valentim Fernandes, perhaps the era's most important printer, who worked in Lisbon between 1495 and 1518, and Germdo Galharde, a Frenchman who practiced his trade in Lisbon and Coimbra between 1519 and 1560. Modus curandi, which came to light in 1974 thanks to bibliophile José de Pina Martins, is anonymous. Johannes Jacobi is believed to be the author of Regimento proueytoso, which was translated into Latin (Regimen contra pestilentiam), French, and English. Both texts are presented here in facsimile and in modern Portuguese, while the first has also been reproduced in archaic Portuguese using modern typographical characters. This philological venture into sixteenth-century medicine is supplemented by a scholarly glossary which serves as a valuable tool in interpreting not only Regimento proueytoso but also other texts from the era. Two articles place these documents in historical perspective.
Hippocrates' humoral pathology in nowaday's reflections

Abstract:Ancient medicine integrated three components: experience (empirical observation), religion/magic and speculations of natural philosophers. The Greek medicine out-achieved medicine of other ancient nations in starting to investigate the true causes of health and diseases and thus laying foundations for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Hippocrates, the most famous physician of the ancient times, made a synthesis of existing philosophical opinions from the point of view of a physician. His 58 writings were preserved in the collection "Corpus Hippocraticum". The most relevant writing in it--"Peri fyseos anthropu" (On the nature of man)--is ascribed to Hippocrates' son-in-law Polybos to whom we are grateful for the ancient humoral-pathological theory. In explaining human organism and its processes the author integrated ancient teachings on 4 basic humors (humoral theory), elements and qualities with observations of manifestations of health and disease. Normal condition (health) was defined as balance between the body fluids (eukrasia) and external environment. If this balance is disturbed, the result is dyskrasia, i.e. disease studied by pathology. According to Hippocrates disease causes can be understood only through empirical study. A man has a power to overcome disease, but to achieve it the right diet is necessary to keep harmony in body fluids of an organism. The role of a physician was just to support the nature. "Prognosis", another writing included in "Corpus Hippocraticum", reflects Hippocrates' understanding of prognosis as a necessary development of diagnosis based on past knowledge (anamnesis) and present observation. Ideas of Hippocrates and his medical school are still valuable and inspiring especially for today's very sophisticated medicine--concept of fighting diseases by natural means: maintaining healthy lifestyle and harmony within the organism, or an effort for perfect understanding of human creature and for humanization of medicine. Abstract:ABSTRACT The analysis of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images using Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based system is implemented in this paper to achieve a rapid and accurate diagnosis tool for bladder cancer. The proposed approach comprises image enhancement, removal of border, feature extraction and bladder cancer recognition using multilayer perception (MLP) with sequential weight/bias training function. We develop a model that defines the cancer level in order to enhance its treatment. Experimental results show that the devised approach increases the accuracy of diagnosis of bladder cancer up to 95%. General Terms Pattern Recognition and Image Processing Keywords Bladder cancer, Image segmentation and ANN 1. INTRODUCTION The bladder cancer is potentially a very serious condition that can be life threatening [1, 2]. It is the fourth most common cancer among men, and the eighth most common cause of cancer among women [3]. It has an average age at diagnosis of 65 years. Consequently, its early detection is vital in increasing the chances of successful treatment. Bladder cancer staging is a multifaceted process that utilizes a combination of clinical and radiological assessment to evaluate the degree of disease spread [4]. A variety of clinical diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for bladder cancer have been developed to improve the quality of the diagnostic methods [5]. In the past, computed tomography (CT) has been used to stage bladder tumors, but dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to be superior to CT for this purpose [6]. Thereby, the aim of the present work is to contribute to the improvement of biomedical systems, allowing for a non-invasive diagnosis of bladder cancerous and pre-cancerous tissues. We use artificial intelligence techniques to early detect bladder cancer and determine tumor staging using a set of functional MRI images. The accuracy of MRI in T staging bladder cancer is assessed. The MRI scans contain different types of information relating to specific 3D voxels in the bladder. We combine useful information within a particular 3D cell (3D volume in the bladder scan space) from all MRI modalities in an automatic way in order to detect or suspect the cancer in the 3D cell [7]. The paper is organized as follows. Section II reviews the basic techniques of medical imaging analysis and the artificial neural networks (ANNs) [8]. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is addressed as a medical imaging technique used in radiology. In Section III, the problem to be inspected is defined. The proposed technique is discussed in Section IV. The obtained results are presented and discussed in Section V. Finally, the conclusion is outlined in Section VI.
[Medical practice in classical Greece : The dermatological case reports in the Hippocratic Corpus]

Abstract:Objectives: Which theoretical and practical competences do the dermatological case histories of the Hippocratic Corpus convey? Materials: The 431 Hippocratic case histories have been studied for reports and communication on diagnostics, therapy and prognosis of individuals and groups of patients suffering from skin diseases. Results: Within the seven books of the Hippocratic 'Epidemics', a total of 49 patients with dermatological symptoms are described; in 20 of these, skin disease was the leading suffering. The essential clinical signs were itching, red spots, blisters, pustules, aphthae, lichen, dandruff and hair loss. Most patients were male; one of the four women was pregnant, among the two children was a baby whose skin disease ended fatally. Eight patients were named. In addition, five waves of disease are reported, in the course of which the shape of the skin played an important role. The diagnostic workup was limited to inspection and palpation, but included the determination of the level of suffering. The follow-up checks often extended over months. Mostly, plasters and compresses with grain flour were primarily used for treatment. Conclusion: The Hippocratic doctor observed and described a large number of skin lesions and attempted to classify them in the differential diagnosis. In addition to changes in the color and tension of the skin, numerous lesions-for which the names are still often used in modern dermatology-are also described in detail. The skin manifestations associated with fever and abdominal symptoms are counted among the epidemic diseases. The condition of the skin was often regarded as an indicator of general health. In the case reports, conservative treatment adapted to the development of the disease dominated. In desperate cases, bloodletting was chosen as a last resort.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the analysis of clinical principles of physician humanist F.P. Haas expounded in his book "Ma visite aux Eaux d'Alexandre en 1809 at 1810" by F.P. Haas (M., 1811). The translation of this book into the Russian language gave an idea of the clinical views of the medical profession in this country in the beginning of the XIXth century (before the Patriotic War of 1812) including relationship between doctors and their patients and medical ethics. Haas proposed a well-substantiated therapeutic strategy with the use of mineral waters taking into consideration residual assimilative capacity of the patient's organism.

Psychosocial Reactions to Plagues in the Cultural History of Medicine: A Medical Humanities Approach

Abstract:The aim of this work is to elucidate psychosocial reactions to plagues by analyzing three landmark descriptions from different eras: Thucydides' description of the plague of Athens (430 BC) in The History of the Peloponnesian War, Giovanni Boccaccio's description of the plague in Florence (1348) in The Decameron, and Albert Camus' description in The Plague (1947). Using a narrative inquiry, we found psychosocial reactions to be complex and ambivalent and could discern several coping strategies. We propose that this knowledge can help psychiatrists and other healthcare professionals during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:This study presents the first full translation from Latin to English of the Linnaean dissertation Morbi Artificum or Occupational diseases, submitted by Nicholas Skragge in 1765. It consists of an essay that places the dissertation in historical and scientific context and of the translation. Skragge's thesis has not only significance in the history of occupational medicine but also provides a perspective on Linnaeus' thinking on dietetics. Skragge's doctoral thesis is one of the 186 academic dissertations defended by students of Carl Linnaeus. Prior to the present study, only three of these 186 dissertations have been translated from Latin to English in our own times. The first extensive compendium on occupational diseases by Bernardino Ramazzini, with the title De Morbis Artificum Diatriba, served as a blueprint for Skragge's thesis. The background for Skragge's thesis was Linnaeus' general interest in systematizing objects according to certain norms in biology, which methodology he also applied when classifying diseases in medicine. Also, Linnaeus' life-long emphasis on the importance of dietetics is evident in the thesis. Finally, in the era when Linnaeus lived (Age of Liberty), Sweden focused greatly on improving the country's economy. Since trade and industry were prioritized by the state, it was reasonable to map the diseases workers were prone to.

Abstract:The prevalence of intestinal parasites in domestic cats from the London area was surveyed over an 18-month period by microscopic examination of faecal samples. Of the 947 cats examined 11.5 per cent were infected with Toxocara cati, 1.9 per cent with Isospora felis, 1.2 per cent with Dipylidium caninum, 1.2 per cent with Taenia taeniaeformis, 0.8 per cent with I rivolta and 0.2 per cent with Toxascaris leonina.

Abstract:During the 14th century CE, a pivotal shift took place in the world of medicine as its epicenter transitioned from the Middle East to Europe. The emergence of the European Renaissance sparked skepticism regarding the significance of Avicenna's contributions to the advancement of medicine. This paper explores how the rise of secularization and the Renaissance in Europe marked significant cultural transformations, fostering the spread of literacy. These societal shifts influenced the trajectory of medical thought, and Avicenna's "Canon of Medicine" received both praise and condemnation amidst the evolving intellectual landscape. In this context, Lorenz Fries composed his "Defense of Avicenna," a testament to his profound admiration for Avicenna's legacy. This paper presents an English translation of Fries' 1530 work, and introduces Fries and Avicenna's "Canon," contextualizing Fries' defense within the broader rejection of Arab‐language medical texts in the 16th century. It also explores Avicenna's influence on European medicine and anatomy during the Renaissance and highlights the enduring relevance of his contributions to the annals of science. Fries' defense underscores Avicenna's methodological acumen and emphasizes the importance of a robust theoretical foundation in medical practice. Avicenna's integration of Aristotelianism with Platonism highlighted the necessity of a rigorous method informed by theory in medical analysis. Fries' defense remains relevant today, particularly in advocating for systematic medical analysis against subjective approaches. Avicenna's medical philosophy seems nested within a larger, hopeful attempt to resolve the tensions between science or naturalism and religion or spiritualism. The rejection of Avicenna reflects broader conflicts between Aristotelian and Neoplatonic traditions, suggesting a complex interplay of secularization and theological influences in shaping medical thought during the Renaissance.

Abstract:Over the past year, historians of medicine have found our discipline invested with a new sense of relevance. In trying to make sense of epidemics past and present, many of us have been substantially influenced by Charles Rosenberg's 1989 Daedalus essay, "What Is an Epidemic? AIDS in Historical Perspective." Writing in the middle of another unfolding global pandemic, Rosenberg suggested that all epidemics possessed similar forms of social choreography, and that applying a narrative framework could help to understand their sequence, structure, and social impact. This issue of the Bulletin offers contributions from thirteen scholars working in various geographic, chronological, and thematic areas that engage with Rosenberg's fundamental historical question about what defines an epidemic, although the question takes on different forms, and different forms of urgency, in each of their works.

Abstract:Abstract This contribution deals with a manuscript, containing lecture notes made in 1827–1828 by a Ghent student named Callenfels and relating to the lectures on ius publicum universale et Belgicum , given by Jacob Joseph Haus (1796–1881), professor of jurisprudence at Ghent University and native of Würzburg. As the course programme of the law faculties in the southern provinces required courses in natural law as well as in ius publicum and ius gentium , the assumption has been put forward these lectures would be restricted to the ius publicum universale such as lectured in many German law faculties in the 18th century. On further examination of the manuscript under consideration this presumption proves to be wrong. After the first 13 sections, which refer in fact to the ius publicum naturale in an enlightened sense, the remaining 253 sections outline the then positive constitutional law of the Netherlands, mainly on the basis of the Dutch written constitution of 1815.

Hybrid Liquid Immersion and Synthetic Jet Heat Sink for Cooling 3-D Stacked Electronics

Abstract:This paper focuses on the design and parametric numerical study of a hybrid heat sink combining a liquid thermal interface with an array of synthetic jet actuators for 3-D chip stack cooling. The air-side heat sink exploits enhanced localized heat transfer achieved via a central array of synthetic jet actuators. The key focus of this paper is the numerical simulation of the dielectric liquid interface used to efficiently transmit the heat from the high-power 3-D stacked electronics to the hybrid heat sink base. The coupled natural convection in the fluid and conduction in solid spreaders sandwiched between the tiers of the stack form a novel efficient, passive, and scalable thermal management solution for 3-D stacked die structures. It is shown that this heat sink with a footprint of 76-mm square × 51-mm height can dissipate a total of 41 W of heat/power from the stack for a 44°C average chip temperature rise above ambient (an Rja of ~ 1.06 K/W obtained passively).
[Poverty and Sickness. The precarious lives of lower-class families in Würzburg and Göttingen, 1800-1850]

Abstract:This contribution focuses on the medical practice of the policlinics in Würzburg and Göttingen in the first half of the nineteenth century. In these institutions patients were treated free of charge by medical students and assistant physicians who, in turn, were able to gain further experience and develop their skills. The policlinics were therefore an important part of poor-healthcare in both these cities. The essay tries in particular to illustrate healthcare for poor patients against the background of their everyday lives and working environment. Based on the situation of individual poor patients, the concepts of 'sickness' and 'poverty' are discussed as mutually dependent determinants of the 'reality of life' among the urban lower classes. This contribution combines the evaluation of medical practice journals and patient histories with the analysis of source materials on urban poor relief and healthcare. It looks particularly at the children and elderly people who attended the policlinics. The encounters between physicians and poor patients documented in the sources not only provide valuable insights into historical patient behaviours, they also open up new perspectives of the physician-patient relationship during the nineteenth century transition from the 'sickbed-society' to hospital medicine.

Abstract:IN NATURE of May 27, p. 908, reference was made to the Dutch Congress of Natural Science and Medicine held at Nijmegen on April 11-13. A correspondent has sent the following notes on some of the medical papers. On the first day of this Congress the main medical paper was read before a very large audience by Prof. B. Brouwer, of Amsterdam. Prof. Brouwer spoke on the hydrodynamic intra-cranial and intra-vertebral conditions in connexion with the development of modern neuro-surgical diagnostic and operative technique. He showed very clearly the great importance which is attached to very simple physical examinations of the cerebral fluid and the ventricular system for the localization of ultra-cranial and intra-vertebral space-occupying lesions. Prof. Brouwer stressed the point that ventricular estimation and ventriculography—when in safe hands-are of the greatest value for the early diagnosis of many intra-cranial space-occupying lesions. Dr. A. Bie-mond, of Amsterdam, spoke on the diagnosis of mid-line brain-tumours. Going over a list of the ante-and post-mortem findings of twenty mid-brain tumour cases, Dr. Biemond tried to divide this material into three groups, according to their clinical picture and their operability. The prognosis, however, of mid-brain tumours, even in the light of modern neuro-surgery, is not very hopeful, according to Dr. Biemond's experience. Very much in contrast with this paper was the contribution of Dr. F. Verbeek, of Groningen. Dr. Verbeek described the tremendous advances which have been made during the last twenty years in the neuro-surgical field. A review of his neuro-surgical patients gave much more hope that even the mid-brain tumours will be accessible for operative treatment. Dr. A. Brouwer (Eindhoven) spoke on the technique of X-ray photography. Dr. C. E. Burger (Eindhoven) dealt with X-ray photography as a method for mass examination in the attack on tubercular infection. Dr. J. H. van der Tuuk (Eindhoven) spoke on deep X-ray treatment and its measurement, with reference to apparatus operating up to one million volts.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to highlight the hallmarks of epilepsy as a disease and symptom during antiquity and especially during Ancient Greece and Rome. A thorough study of texts, medical books, and reports along with a review of the available literature in PubMed was undertaken. Observations on epilepsy date back to the medical texts of the Assyrians and Babylonians, almost 2000 years B.C. Considered initially as a divine malady or demonic possession, epilepsy was demythologized by the Father of Medicine, Hippocrates, who was the first to set in dispute its divine origin. Physicians in the early post-Hippocratic era did not make any important contribution regarding the mechanisms of epileptic convulsions, but contributed mainly in the field of nosology and systemization of symptoms.

Locating hygienic medicine within the intellectual history of hygiene: cases of E. W. Lane and T. R. Allinson

Abstract:Nineteenth century hygiene might be a confusing concept. On the one hand, the concept of hygiene was gradually becoming an important concept that was focused on cleanliness and used interchangeably with sanitation. On the other hand, the classical notions of hygiene rooted in the Hippocratic teachings remained influential. This study is about two attempts to newly theorise such a confusing concept of hygiene in the second half of the century by Edward. W. Lane and Thomas R. Allinson. Their works, standing on the borders of self-help medical advice and theoretical treatises on medical philosophies, were not exactly scholarly ones, but their medical thoughts - conceptualised as hygienic medicine - show a characteristically holistic medical view of hygiene, a nineteenth-century version of the reinterpretation of the nature cure philosophy and vitalism. However, the aim of this study is to properly locate their conceptualisations of hygienic medicine within the historical context of the second half of the nineteenth century rather than to simply introduce the medical ideas in their books. Their views of hygiene were distinguished not only from the contemporary sanitary approach but also from similar attempts by contemporary orthodox and unorthodox medical doctors. Through a chronological analysis of changes in the concept of hygiene and a comparative analysis of these two authors' and other medical professionals' views of hygiene, this paper aims to help understand the complicated picture of nineteenth-century hygiene, particularly during the second half of the century, from the perspective of medical holism and reductionism.

Abstract:Jean Mésué, a Nestorian scholar, who practised and taught medicine in Bagdad in the tenth century, composed, besides numerous other works, an anthology of aphorisms, the dissemination of which was really extraordinary. There were 132 aphorisms concerning diseases and their treatment according to the doctor and the patients; some of them expressing home truths still valid today. From the East, Jean Mésué's aphorisms passed to the West where they met with amazing good luck, since the two Latin translations and the French translation were copied, then printed many times from the eleventh to the seventeenth century. It is the history of the handing down of this Arabian medical work that the author proposes to retrace in his communication.
