Abstract:Background: With the growing trend of ageing, there is an urgent need for effective interventions that enhance positive psychological functions among older adults. Objective: (1) To evaluate the effectiveness of life review and reminiscence therapy in enhancing the quality of life and life satisfaction among older adults. (2) To discover efficacious variables during interventions, such as form of intervention and number of sessions. Methods: Relevant randomized controlled trials in both English and Chinese languages were searched across eight databases. The meta-analysis was conducted by a random effects model using STATA 17. The registration number of this review is CRD42023424085. Results: Thirty-two studies with 2353 participants were included. Experimental groups of older adults significantly improved their quality of life (SMD 1.07; 95% CI 0.48 to 1.66; p < 0.001) and life satisfaction (SMD 1.12; 95% CI 0.63 to 1.60; p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed that individual sessions of life review and reminiscence therapy had a more significant impact on improving quality of life and six to eight intervention sessions could enhance life satisfaction more effectively. Conclusions: Life review and reminiscence therapy hold promise for application in medical and nursing care for older adults, suggesting the potential benefits of implementing intervention designs with effective settings for positive psychological functions.

Abstract:Depression and self-esteem affects the health and quality of life of older adults who live in nursing homes. This study tested the effectiveness of art therapy activities on reducing the depression and improving the self-esteem of elderly living in long-term care institutes. This was a quasi-experimental study. A purposive sampling strategy was used to select 55 subjects who were aged 65 and above with intact mental functions and depression tendencies and currently residing in nursing homes in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. 29 subjects who participated in a selection of 12 artistic activities were assigned to the experimental group and 26 subjects who adhered to their ordinary activities were allocated to the control group. Structured questionnaires of the artistic group were used for data collection. The art therapy programs showed promising effects in improving the depression and self-esteem of older adults living in nursing homes. Art therapy activities benefit the mental health of older adults. Incorporating artistic activities into social work care may help develop long-term care into a more diverse, unique, and innovative direction.

Abstract:This study examines the effects of reminiscence-based group art therapy on the attitudes toward aging and the quality of life of elderly individuals living alone. The study participants were 24 elderly individuals living alone, aged 65 and older, who use a senior care facility in K City. They were divided into two groups: an exp. group of 12 and a control group of 12. The experimental group underwent 12 sessions of group art therapy once a week from September 5, 2023, to December 12, 2023. The Aging Attitudes Questionnaire(AAQ-21) and the Quality of Life in Ageing Scale(CASP-19) were used as research tools. Differences between groups were analyzed using Analysis of Covariance. The results are as follows. First, the experimental group showed significant improvements in their attitudes towards aging, particularly in aspects related to social loss, physical and psychological changes, and growth. Second, the quality of life in terms of autonomy, pleasure, and self-realization also significantly improved in the experimental group. These findings suggest that reminiscence-based group art therapy can be an effective intervention for enhancing aging attitudes and quality of life among elderly living alone.

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of reminiscence therapy work on depression, quality of life, ego-integrity, social behavior function, and activities of daily living. This study was a quasiexperimental study using a single-group pretest/posttest design. This therapy consists of eight sessions of 2.5 hours with a specific theme. A total of 19 patients with mild dementia who registered at a mental health center in community-dwelling participated in this study. Hypotheses were supported by quality of life, ego-integrity, and social behavior function. But depression and activities of daily living were not supported. Although all the hypotheses were not supported, a reminiscence therapy was beneficial. Patients with mild dementia can talk to each other naturally without feeling a psychological burden, and they are provided the opportunity to look back on their life.

Abstract:Background: The need for dyadic intervention is enhanced with increasing numbers of older adults with dementia. Studies have shown that sensory art therapies are essential for dementia patients and their caregivers. The effects of dyadic sensory art therapies for people with dementia and their caregivers require further exploration. Objectives: This review aimed to assess the efficacy of dyadic sensory art therapies on neuropsychiatric symptoms and mental function for dementia patients, caregiver burden and psychological state for caregivers, dyad relationship quality for dyads, and evaluate the potential effects of dyadic sensory art therapies on quality of life for both dementia patients and caregivers. Methods: An electronic literature search of the PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO and three Chinese databases (CNKI, Wanfang and CBM) was conducted up to November 2022. Two reviewers (SZ and QG) worked independently to identify relevant studies. Risk of bias was assessed by the Cochrane's and Joanna Briggs Institute's tool. Meta-analyses were conducted using RevMan software 5.4. Results: This systematic review included 15 studies (7 RCTs and 8 quasi-experimental studies). The meta analysis showed that dyadic sensory art therapies significantly ameliorated neuropsychiatric symptoms (SMD =-0.90, 95% CI-1.61 to-0.20, P = .01), caregiver burden (SMD =-0.75; 95% CI-1.03 to-0.47; P < .001). No significant improvements were found in caregiver depression and quality of life for both patients and caregivers. Conclusions: Dyadic sensory art therapies are generally effective at ameliorating neuropsychiatric symptoms, and caregiver burden. Future studies are encouraged to design large-scale randomized controlled trials with high-quality study to examine and confirm the effectiveness of dyadic sensory art therapies for these dyads composed of dementia patients and their caregivers. Abstract:This study examines the impact of reminiscence therapy on cognitive and emotional well-being in institutionalized older patients with dementia. Conducted at the Long-Term Care Health Facility for the Elderly, the research involved 34 participants who underwent therapy sessions that included personalized discussions of past experiences. Using physiological markers such as electroencephalography alpha and beta waves, along with psychological measures such as the Hasegawa Dementia Scale—Revised, the study aimed to quantify the effects of the therapy. Although the results indicated positive correlations between alpha and beta waves, suggesting enhanced relaxation and cognitive engagement, improvements in Hasegawa Dementia Scale—Revised scores were not statistically significant, pointing to variability in therapeutic effectiveness among patients. Despite these mixed outcomes, the findings support the potential of reminiscence therapy as a non-pharmacological intervention to improve the quality of life of dementia patients, though they also underscore the necessity for further research to refine therapy protocols and enhance applicability.

Abstract:A 55-year-old man with chronic hepatitis C had diarrhea with bloody stool in July, 2003 and ulcerative colitis was suspected. However, he quickly improved. He was treated with percutaneous radiofrequency ablation therapy for adenomatous hyperplasia in S5 of the liver in December, 2004. After the ablation therapy, he was treated with combination therapy of PEG-interferon alpha-2b and ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C. Because exacerbation of ulcerative colitis appeared 10 weeks after beginning of the treatment for hepatitis C, the combination therapy of PEG-interferon and ribavirin was discontinued. He was treated with mesalazine and steroid therapy for ulcerative colitis, and improved. We report the first case in Japan of the exacerbation of ulcerative colitis induced by the combination therapy of PEG-interferon and ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C.

Abstract:Background: Combined art activities can improve the neural network function within various brain regions involved in emotions, cognition, and behavior, thereby preventing or reversing cognitive decline. However, few studies have systematically examined its effects. Furthermore, the impact of nurse-led art-based cognitive intervention on cognitive and psychological health is unclear. Objective: To evaluate the effects of a nurse-led staged integral art-based cognitive intervention in older adults on the Alzheimer's disease spectrum. Design: This was a randomized wait-list controlled trial with allocation concealment and blinding of outcome assessors and data analysts. All data were collected between April 2021 and January 2023 and analyzed from January to March 2023. Setting: One memory clinic and four medical partnership communities. Participants: A total of 144 participants with subjective or objective memory decline (aged ≥60 years). Methods: Participants were randomized into an intervention group (n = 72) and a wait-list control group (n = 72), in a 1:1 ratio. The intervention group underwent a 16-week, 24-session nurse-led staged integral art-based cognitive intervention program, which was based on neurocognitive function training patterns. The control group underwent the program after the follow-up assessment. General and specific domains of cognitive function and other health-related outcomes were measured at baseline (T0), immediately after the intervention (T1), and at the 6-month follow-up (T2). Results: Of the 144 participants (mean [SD] age, 71.6 [5.8] years; 50 [34.7 %] males and 94 [65.3 %] females), 130 and 115 completed the questionnaires at T1 and T2, respectively. The average attendance rate in the intervention group was 86.0 %. At T1, the intervention group showed greater improvement than the control group did in general cognitive functions (MoCA, between-group mean difference, 1.4 [95 % CIs, 0.4 to 2.5], p = 0.009). Additionally, the intervention group demonstrated statistically significant improvement compared to the control group in language, memory, quality of life, sleep quality and physical activity level at T1. Statistically significant group differences remained in sleep quality (PSQI, between-group mean difference, -1.3 [95 % CIs, -2.5 to -0.1], p = 0.035) at the 6-month follow-up. Conclusions: In this randomized controlled trial of a nurse-led staged integral art-based cognitive intervention program, older adults on the Alzheimer's disease spectrum who participated in the program experienced improved cognition and psychological health. Group Reminiscence Therapy for Dementia to Improve Well-Being and Reduce Behavioral Symptoms

Abstract:The global increase in dementia cases highlights the urgent need for effective treatment and care strategies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of group reminiscence therapy on cognitive function, subjective well-being, and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in older adults with moderate to severe dementia. A pre-post comparative design was used, with 49 participants receiving eight group reminiscence therapy sessions over 4 weeks. Baseline, one-week, and one-month postintervention assessments were conducted using the Hasegawa Dementia Scale-Revised (HDS-R), the Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Nursing Home Version (NPI-NH), and the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale (PGC Morale Scale). The results showed no significant improvement in HDS-R scores, but significant improvements in PGC Morale Scale (p = 0.0417) and NPI-NH scores (p = 0.00226), indicating improved well-being and reduced BPSD. These findings suggest that group reminiscence therapy is effective in improving BPSD. Future research should focus on extending the duration of the intervention, including different populations, and combining group reminiscence therapy with other therapeutic approaches to fully determine its long-term benefits and mechanisms. Research on its cost-effectiveness and cultural applicability could further validate and improve the use of group reminiscence therapy in diverse care settings.

Abstract:The current study aimed to investigate the effects of group reminiscence therapy on cognitive function, depression, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and activities of daily living in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer disease (AD). A single-blind randomized parallel-design controlled trial was conducted between May 1, 2017, and April 30, 2018. Ninety patients with mild-to-moderate AD recruited from Beijing Geriatric Hospital were randomly allocated into intervention (n = 45) and control groups (n = 45). In the intervention group, group-based reminiscence therapy was performed in two 30- to 45-minute sessions weekly for 12 weeks. Control participants received only conventional drug treatments and routine daily care. Alzheimer disease–related symptoms were evaluated using the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive section, the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD), the Neuropsychiatric Inventory, and the Barthel Index. Four time points were set for data collection: baseline (before treatment), 4 weeks (during treatment), 12 weeks (end of treatment), and 24 weeks (12 weeks posttreatment). χ 2 Tests, independent t tests, repeated-measures analysis of variance, and Bonferroni tests were used for data analysis. Significant improvements in depressive and neuropsychiatric symptoms were found in the intervention group compared to the control group ( P < .05). Mean CSDD scores in the intervention group were improved at all 3 time points compared to baseline and showed the greatest effect at 12 weeks ( t = 2.076, P = .041) and 24 weeks follow-up ( t = 3.834, P = .000) compared to controls. Group reminiscence therapy was effective for improving depressive symptoms and was beneficial for treating neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with AD.

Abstract:Background: Non-pharmacological therapies have been shown to be effective in managing challenging behavior in people with dementia. However, the efficacy of art therapy has yet to be determined. Objective: In the present systematic review, we evaluate the efficacy of art therapy as a non-pharmacological intervention for dementia and examine whether art therapy improves wellbeing and quality of life while decreasing biological and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Methods: Research undertaken between 2015 and 2020 was examined and a total of seventeen studies met the specified search criteria, with 853 participants (657 people with dementia, 180 formal and informal carers, and 16 volunteers) involved. Results: We identified four outcome domains: wellbeing, quality of life, BPSD, and cognitive function. One or more significant outcomes as having an impact on the efficacy of the intervention were reported in 88% (15/17) of the studies, whereas 17% (3/17) demonstrated significant outcomes across quality of life, wellbeing, and BPSD. Conclusion: People with dementia benefit from art therapy. These interventions when incorporating elements of being ‘in the moment’ increase opportunities for communication between people with dementia and their caregiver(s) and facilitate person-centered therapeutic activities.

Abstract:Most senior veterans who live in veteran homes in Taiwan have few interpersonal relationships. Aging is often accompanied by solitude and illness, which causes senior veterans to doubt the meaning of life and to lose confidence in the value of life. This study tested the effectiveness of a group reminiscence therapy protocol on the depression and meaning of life among elderly institutionalized veterans. A quasi-experimental design was applied. A convenience sample of older adults was drawn from two veteran homes in southern Taiwan. Participants were assigned to intervention or control groups based on the veterans' homes they attended. The participants in the intervention group carried out group reminiscence therapy for 8 weeks in addition to their daily activities. The participants in the comparison group maintained their daily activities. Both groups were evaluated using the GDS-SF and MLS scale including two aspects of depression mood and meaning of life in weeks 1 and 8. The overall life satisfaction increased significantly over time for the intervention group compared to the comparison group from week 1 to week 8. The group reminiscence therapy programs showed promising effects in improving the depression and meaning of life of older veterans living in veteran homes.

Abstract:Objective: Depression is one of the most common problems faced by older adults. Reminiscence therapy, defined as using the recall of past events, feelings, and thoughts facilitating pleasure, is one type of psychotherapy that could alleviate depressive feelings among older adults, improve their quality of life, and help them live independently. Reminiscence therapy originated from geriatric psychiatry, and is an effective non-pharmacological intervention that could be structured or unstructured and be conducted individually or in a group. The current systematic review was designed to summarize and review existing evidence on the effect of reminiscence therapy on depression in older adults. Methods: We conducted a systematic review from January 2000 to Mar 2021 using 10 electronic databases in English and Chinese languages, including Medline, Embase, Cinahl, PsychInfo, Cochrane, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Science Direct, CNKI, and WANFANG. We excluded studies that didn't use randomized controlled trials (RCT) from the meta-analysis. The selected studies were scored using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. The RevMan 5.0 was used in subgroup analysis depending on how the interventions were classified. Results: We extracted 527 studies based on keyword searches, of which 10 RCTs met inclusion criteria were included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis yielded high heterogeneity, and the analyses of significant subgroups showed that reminiscence therapy has a significant effect on relieving depressive symptoms in older adults. Reminiscence therapy benefits older adults with chronic illness and those on antidepressants as well. The effect and cost-effectiveness of group reminiscence therapy were higher than individual reminiscence therapy. And some specific types of group reminiscence therapy have a significant effect on improving depression and secondary outcomes, including life satisfaction. Although the effectiveness of structured and unstructured group reminiscence on depression has no significant differences according to current evidence, the structured therapy is more replicable, generalizable, and user-friendly due to its detailed protocol for new therapists. Furthermore, reminiscence therapy is more effective for older women and older adults with more severe depressive symptoms. Conclusion: Reminiscence therapy significantly increased older adults' remission from depression and quality of life immediately after the intervention. However, the evidence-based protocol and implementation of reminiscence interventions need to be further developed and standardized to facilitate global use. Moreover, it remains unclear on the long-term effect of reminiscence therapy. Based on the limitations of the current study, more rigorous evidence is needed from studies with large sample sizes, RCT design, and longer follow-up periods. Future studies could also explore the effect of different types of reminiscence therapy. Furthermore, qualitative data should be included to better understand older adults' narrative and experiences with reminiscence therapy. Future studies could also investigate the impact of reminiscence therapy on older relatives as a part of outcome measure to explore the efficacious mechanism of reminiscence therapy in alleviating older adults' depressive symptoms.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The prevalence of dementia in Taiwan continues to rise, and related patient care is becoming challenging for family members and caregivers. Nondrug treatments are often used as a care strategy to alleviate the behaviors associated with worsening dementia. Many international researchers have examined the effectiveness of drama therapy on dementia care. However, there is a lack of related studies in Taiwan.PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of drama therapy in terms of improving depressive symptoms, attention, and quality of life in patients with senile dementia.METHODS: A two-group pretest-and-posttest design was employed in this randomized controlled trial. Cluster sampling was employed at four dementia daycare centers in central Taiwan. Two centers were randomly assigned to the experimental group, and the other two centers were assigned to the control group.RESULTS: Forty-two patients with dementia (23 in the experimental group and 19 in the control group) participated in this study. The study results showed that, after 8 weeks of drama therapy, the experimental group showed a significant improvement in depressive symptoms (β = -5.07, p < .001), attention (β = 5.86, p < .001), and quality of life (β = -6.08, p < .001). Furthermore, after 12 weeks of drama therapy, the experimental group continued to show a significant improvement in depressive symptoms (β = -4.65, p < .01), attention (β = 6.76, p < .001), and quality of life (β = -4.94, p < .01).CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of the results of this study, patients with senile dementia who participate in 8- and 12-week drama therapy programs significantly improved in terms of depressive symptoms, attention, and quality of life. The authors hope that the findings of this study provide a reference for the intervention method, content, frequency, and timing of drama therapy in patients with dementia.

The quality of the included articles was assessed by using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Scale or Criteria (2020) and the Australian Evidence-Based Health Care Centre (2020). Data related to study and intervention characteristics were extracted.RESULTS: Twenty-four articles were included, of which eight were quasiexperimental studies and sixteen were randomized controlled studies. The overall study quality was high, but most studies did not blind the participants. Group reminiscence interventions were beneficial in improving depressive symptoms and life satisfaction in older adults with intact cognition or mild cognitive impairment, but no valid conclusions could be drawn about the effect on quality of life.CONCLUSIONS: Group reminiscence interventions are an effective type of psychological intervention to improve the psychological health of older people. In addition, group reminiscence interventions are simple and easy to implement and can be considered a routine care activity to meet the spiritual needs of cognitively intact and mildly cognitively impaired older people.

The Effect of Reminiscence Music Therapy Sessions on Changes in Depressive Symptoms in Elderly Persons with Dementia

Abstract:This study examined the effectiveness of reminiscence focused music therapy treatment on depressive symptoms in elderly people with dementia. Twenty elderly (3 male & 17 female) who were diagnosed as having dementia and residing at 2 different residential care facilities in Florida were assigned to 1 of 4 small groups. Each of the participants served as his or her own control in an O1 O2 X O3 design. The depressive symptoms were measured using Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia. The differences between the scores of pretest, posttest 1 after a week of 5-day no treatment, and posttest 2 after a week of 5-day reminiscence focused music therapy treatment were compared. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Newman-Keuls Multiple Comparison Procedure indicated statistically significant differences between pretest and posttest 2 as well as posttest 1 and posttest 2, while no significant differences were found between pretest and posttest 1. Results indicated that participation in small group reminiscence focused music therapy groups might help to reduce depressive symptoms in elderly people with dementia. Results of behavioral observations and future implications are also discussed.

Abstract:Introduction Subjective cognitive decline means a decline in the subjective perception of self-cognitive function, which is likely to evolve into mild cognitive impairment and dementia. The number of elderly with subjective cognitive decline has increased, bringing huge burdens and challenges to caregivers and society. With the increase in research on art therapies, some of them have gradually been proven to be effective for cognitive function. Therefore, this study aims to summarise the evidence and identify the best art therapy for elderly with subjective cognitive decline. Methods and analysis We will include published randomised controlled trials written in English and Chinese if the intervention is one of the art therapies and applied in people aged 60 and above with subjective cognitive decline. Eight electronic databases, including the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, Web of Science, Elsevier, China BioMedical Literature Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Database and Wanfang Database, will be searched from January 2013 to December 2023. Art therapies will mainly include music therapy, reminiscence therapy, painting therapy, dance therapy, reading therapy, horticultural therapy, museum therapy, calligraphy therapy and so on. The outcome will be cognitive function. Study selection, data extraction and quality assessment will be performed by two reviewers. The risk of bias will be evaluated according to the Cochrane Collaboration's risk-of-bias tool, and the evidence quality will be assessed with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation. Standard pairwise meta-analysis and Bayesian network meta-analysis will be conducted. The probabilities of each art therapy will be ranked based on the surface under the cumulative ranking curve. Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval is not required for reviewing published studies. To provide important evidence for clinicians and guideline developers, the findings of this study will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. PROSPERO registration number CRD42023443773.

Abstract:The research was conducted to investigate the improvement of agitated behaviors, cognitive functions, and negative emotions among patients with senile dementia and the burden of caregivers after simulated presence therapy (SPT) intervention. 85 Patients with senile dementia were included as the research subjects and divided into control group (40 cases performed with routine nursing) and observation group (45 cases undergoing routine nursing combined with SPT) via a random number table method. Cohen-Mansfield agitation inventory (CAMI) and protective constraint were used to assess the improvement of agitated behaviors among patients. Besides, apathy evaluation scale-informant (AES-I), functional independence measure (FIM), self-rating depression scale (SDS), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), clock drawing test, and caregiver burden inventory (CBI) were adopted to evaluate the differences in apathy, daily living and sociability, depression, anxiety, cognitive functions, and caregiver burden between the two groups. It was demonstrated that CAMI score, the duration of protective constraint use, AES-I score, SDS score, SAS score, and CBI score among patients in observation group all apparently decreased compared with those in control group after the intervention. In contrast, FIM and clock drawing test scores both notably increased ( p < 0.05). The above findings suggested that SPT could obviously reduce the incidence of agitated behaviors, improve the level of apathy, daily living and sociability, depression, anxiety, and cognitive functions, and relieve caregiver burden among patients with senile dementia during SPT intervention for patients with senile dementia.

Abstract:AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine the effectiveness of individual reminiscence therapy in community-dwelling older women with depressive symptoms and to explore the characteristics of participants' verbalisation in the process.BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found reminiscence was related to depression and anxiety. Although reminiscence therapy is widely used to reduce depression, little is known about how it works, and the content of verbalisations might provide one explanation.DESIGN: The study employed a one-group pretest-post-test design.METHODS: Twenty-seven participants underwent 6-week interventions of individual reminiscence therapy at home that were conducted by one nurse and induced through seeing old photographs. The Geriatric Depression Scale, Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale, Reminiscence Functions Scale and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire were used to measure the emotional states, reminiscence functions and cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Participants' verbalisations were categorised using the Client Behavior System.RESULTS: Reminiscence therapy relieved depression and anxiety. Both the reminiscence function and cognitive emotion regulation became more favourable after interventions. Furthermore, higher frequencies of recounting, cognitive-behavioural exploration and affective exploration were noted in the process. Participants with more severe depressive symptoms tended to display a higher frequency of affective exploration. The reduction in depression, self-negative reminiscence and negative-focused emotion regulation were respectively associated with verbalisations.CONCLUSIONS: Individual reminiscence therapy might relieve negative emotion and improve reminiscence function and cognitive emotion regulation. The participants' verbalisation is worthy of our attention, due to its correlation with the severity of depression and its mitigating effects on the depression, anxiety, self-negative reminiscence and negative-focused regulation in older women. The results contribute to our understanding of the therapeutic procedure and suggest a need for more research on the therapeutic processes.RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Study on processes could help training novice clinical interveners so that reminiscence therapy can work better on emotional disorders in clinical practice.
