Abstract:This paper is to present our study of the applicability of Lattice Boltzmann methods to the colloidal hyporheic exchange via the flume experiment while trying to use the X-ray Difference Micro-tomography(XDMT) and Lattice Boltzmann Methods in combination with the study of the colloidal dynamic process in the hyporheic exchange taking place in a riverbed,in order to quantify the spatial variation of the riverbed caused by the colloid deposition.For our research purpose,we have conducted a laboratory flume experiment with the deposition of the colloidal ZrO2 particles in a streambed composed of granular glass beads.At the same time,we have done observations via XDMT and LB simulation and quantitative analysis of the effects of pore-scale colloidal deposits on the local porosity and permeability of the sand riverbed.The 3D tomographic reconstructions have shown that the colloid deposition proves to be highly heterogeneous at the pore scale.After entering the upstream surface of the bed form,most colloids were deposited on the top surface of the glass beads,which implies that the process of interception and gravitation tends to dominate the particle deposition because of the approximately downward of the water current in the given river section.In such sections of the river,we can find the accumulation effects of the grain contacts,resulting from the physical straining mechanism.The porosity reduction at the top level of the bed proves generally greater than those in the bottom level.At the same time,we can also find that both at the top level and the bottom level,the permeability reduction at the upstream surface of the riverbed proves to be generally higher than the downstream surface,which implies that a small amount of colloidal deposition can lead to significant permeability reduction by clogging the bed surface.When we investigated the overall evolution of the deposit structure and permeability distributions of the sites in the streambed due to colloid filtration in the streambed by using XDMT and LB simulations,it can be found that by fitting the relationship between the local permeability and the local porosity of the bed media,the deposit structure and permeability distributions of the sites in the streambed turn out to follow a power with k∝φ2.9.This indicates that the local permeability tends to increase with the increase of the local porosity,which suggests that the permeability was a strong function of porosity in this case.The data obtained here before and after deposition of the local porosity and permeability make us gain a better understanding of the complicated coupling between the changing pore structure,the pore water current,the solute migration,and the stream subsurface exchange.

Abstract:An accurate mechanistic understanding of solute diffusion in partially saturated clays is critical for assessing the safety of deep geological repositories for radioactive waste. In this study, a pore‐scale numerical framework is developed to simulate water and ion diffusion in partially saturated clays. First, the two‐phase Shan‐Chen Lattice Boltzmann method is employed to establish the liquid‐gas distribution in a reconstructed three‐dimensional pore geometry of a clay. An equivalent solute method is also developed and validated to improve the numerical stability of the solution at the liquid/gas interface corresponding to steep variations of the concentration and diffusion coefficient of the water tracer. By using a mobility‐distance relationship from molecular simulations, Fick's law is numerically solved to simulate water diffusion in nanopores, while the coupled Poisson‐Boltzmann‐Nernst‐Planck equations are solved to simulate ion diffusion under the influence of the electrical double layer (EDL). Our model reveals that the decrease of relative effective diffusion coefficients during the desaturation is more pronounced for ions than for water, due to the additional transport pathway of water tracers in the gas phase. The obtained effective diffusion coefficients of tritiated water and ions agree well with reported data from compacted sedimentary rocks. By comparing the local electric potential and the distribution of ion concentrations in single pores, the simulation results suggest that the EDL in unsaturated clays has a more complex influence on ion distribution than under fully water‐saturated conditions. This study provides critical insights into the coupled transport processes of solutes in partially saturated clays.

Abstract:Modeling of solute transport is a key issue in the area of soil physics and hydrogeology. The most common approach (the convection-dispersion equation) considers an average convection flow rate and Fickian-like dispersion. Here, we propose a solute transport model in porous media of continuously expanding scale, according to the combinatorics principle. The model supposed actual porous media as a combinative body of many basic segments. First, we studied the solute transport process in each basic segment body, and then deduced the distribution of pore velocity in each basic segment body by difference approximation, finally assembled the solute transport process of each basic segment body into one of the combinative body. The simulation result coincided with the solute transport process observed in test. The model provides useful insight into the solute transport process of the non-Fickian dispersion in continuously expanding scale.

Abstract:A parallel implementation of the three-dimensional Shan-and-Chen multicomponent, multiphase lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) was used to simulate the equilibrium distributions of two immiscible fluids in porous media. The simulations were successfully validated against cone-beam x-ray microtomographic data on the distribution of oil (decane), water, and air phases in a 5-mm cube of porous medium composed of packed quartz sand grains. The results confirm that LBM models allow for the straightforward incorporation of complex pore space geometry determined from x-ray microtomography measurements and that simulated wetting and nonwetting phase distributions are consistent with x-ray observations on both macroscopic and microscopic scales.

Abstract:Advances in pore structure characterization and lattice-Boltzmann (LB) simulations of flow fields in pore spaces are making mechanistic simulations of colloid transport in real porous media a realistic goal. The primary challenge to reach this goal may be the computational demand of LB flow simulations in discretized porous medium domains at an assemblage scale. In this work, flow fields in simple cubic and dense packing systems were simulated at different discretization resolutions using the LB method. The simulated flow fields were incorporated into to a three-dimensional particle tracking model to simulate colloid transport in the two systems. The simulated colloid deposition tended to become asymptotic at a critical discretization resolution (voxel-grain size ratio = 0.01) at groundwater flow regimes for colloids down to submicrometer level under favorable conditions and down to around 1 mu m under unfavorable conditions. The average simulated fluid velocities near grain surfaces were extracted to explain the sensitivities of simulated depositions to space discretization under both conditions. At the critical discretization resolution, current computation capacity would allow flow simulations and particle tracking in assemblage porous medium domains. In addition, particle tracking simulations revealed that colloids may be retained in flow vortices under conditions both favorable and unfavorable for deposition. Colloid retention in flow vortices has been proposed only very recently. Here we provide a mechanistic confirmation to this novel retention process.

Abstract:Solute-surface interactions have garnered considerable interest in recent years as a novel control mechanism for driving unique fluid dynamics and particle transport with potential applications in fields such as biomedicine, the development of microfluidic devices, and enhanced oil recovery. In this study, we will discuss dispersion induced by the diffusioosmotic motion near a charged wall in the presence of a solute concentration gradient. Here, we introduce a plug of salt with a Gaussian distribution at the center of a channel with no background flow. As the solute diffuses, the concentration gradient drives a diffusioosmotic slip flow at the walls, which results in a recirculating flow in the channel; this, in turn, drives an advective flux of the solute concentration. This effect leads to cross-stream diffusion of the solute, altering the effective diffusivity of the solute as it diffuses along the channel. We derive theoretical predictions for the solute dynamics using a multiple-timescale analysis to quantify the dispersion driven by the solute-surface interactions. Furthermore, we derive a cross-sectionally averaged concentration equation with an effective diffusivity analogous to that from Taylor dispersion. In addition, we use numerical simulations to validate our theoretical predictions.

Abstract:The response of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (MNC) to Aspergillus fumigatus in vitro was evaluated. In studies of the proliferative response of MNC from 18 healthy donors to heat-killed A. fumigatus conidia, 15 displayed a significant response, with a stimulation index (SI) between 4 and 193. In contrast, all donors displayed a positive response to Candida albicans blastoconidia (SI ranged from 10 to 224). Despite the variability in reactivity to A. fumigatus conidia, the response of a particular individual was stable when retested over periods of 1-2 weeks. Supernatant from cocultures of A. fumigatus conidia with MNC contained increased levels of interferon-gamma, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin (IL)-2, compared with unstimulated cells, but not IL-10 or IL-4. In addition, A. fumigatus induced lymphocyte surface expression of adhesion/activation-associated molecules. These results suggest that lymphocytes may contribute to host defense against Aspergillus by generating a Th1-type response.

Abstract:Accurate prediction of colloid transport in porous media under environmentally relevant conditions requires incorporation of complex pore geometries into particle trajectory simulations. Advances in pore structure characterization and numeric flow simulations have the potential to take real pore geometries into account. In this work, a scheme was developed to extract pore structures (grain radii and center positions) from X‐ray microtomography images of glass beads. Lattice Boltzmann flow simulations were performed to derive flow fields in pore spaces. On the basis of the derived flow fields, particle tracking was carried out in the absence of an energy barrier to deposition and under a wide range of colloid size and flow conditions. Simulated depositions agree reasonably well with predictions by applicable correlation equations and experimental observations at groundwater flow regimes, indicating that the particle tracking algorithm is able to simulate colloid trajectories in porous media with reasonable accuracy in the absence of an energy barrier and may also be able to do so in the presence of an energy barrier (which is more environmentally relevant). The simulated depositions are much greater than both predicted and experimentally observed values at high fluid velocities (>1 × 10−3 m s−1). Simulations under selected unfavorable conditions at groundwater flow regimes indicated that temporary retention of colloids by low‐flow zones in pore spaces could play a predominant role in colloid removal at low ionic strengths. As the ionic strength increases (deposition condition becomes less unfavorable), the contribution of temporary retention to overall removal decreases.

Abstract:Pore-scale modeling plays a crucial role in understanding and upscaling solute transport behavior in porous media. Direct simulation offers the highest fidelity in resolving pore-scale fluid flow and mass transfer, nevertheless, with unacceptable computational costs for practical applications. Pore network models (PNM), on the other hand, provide an efficient alternative but with reduced accuracy in representing transport dynamics. In this study, we propose a new framework of pore network models that ensures both accuracy and efficiency, which reproduces the pore-scale shear dispersion effect by utilizing the pore-scale shear dispersion coefficient to calculate the diffusive mass exchange rate between network elements. The coefficient is determined based on the extension of Taylor-Aris theory that expands the classical Taylor-Aris theory to encompass the pre-asymptotic regime. Additionally, the framework adopts a physically representative pore network, where the conduit length and volume of network elements are determined based on local resistance equivalence. After verifying its accuracy and reliability, we conduct a series of numerical cases on tube networks, sphere packs, and sand packs. The breakthrough curves and concentration profiles obtained from our new model show good agreement with direct simulation results and experimental data, while the simulation outcomes of the models that rely on the molecular diffusion coefficient or Taylor dispersion coefficient for local mass exchange may exhibit significant errors. We finally demonstrate that the significance of pore-scale shear dispersion on solute transport weakens for tube networks with increasing degrees of geometrical disorder. The proposed model provides an accurate and efficient numerical framework for the study of solute transport and dispersion in porous media.

Abstract:We present our recent progress on mesoscopic modeling of multiphysicochemical transport phenomena in porous media based on the lattice Boltzmann method. Simulation examples include injection of CO2-saturated brine into a limestone rock, two-phase behavior and flooding phenomena in polymer electrolyte fuel cells, and electroosmosis in homogeneously charged porous media. It is shown that the lattice Boltzmann method can account for multiple, coupled physicochemical processes in these systems and can shed some light on the underlying physics occurring at the fundamental scale. Therefore, it can be a potential powerful numerical tool to analyze multiphysicochemical processes in various energy, earth, and environmental systems.

Abstract:Transport phenomena in unsaturated porous media still present an important research topic. In particular, in the context of recent environmental concerns, further understanding of contaminant transport in the partially saturated vadose zone is necessary. However, there is currently a lack of understanding of the relationship between water saturation, in particular the two-phase distribution, and dispersion. This is due to the intricate interactions between the two-phase flow and the porous structure, as well as the complexity of the experimental techniques, which prevents a significant number of configurations from being analysed. We explore passive tracer transport in two-dimensional unsaturated porous media via experimental and numerical methods. To this goal, we conduct co-injection experiments to produce two-phase distributions (air/water) at different saturations in a transparent micromodel that mimics the topology of the Bentheimer sandstone. From these experiments, we generate images using multi-scale multiple-point statistics modelling (MPS). Employing the Lattice Boltzmann method, we calculate velocity and concentration fields for both experimental and generated images under saturated and unsaturated conditions. Our results show strong similarities in velocity distributions, good agreement in concentration profiles, and a matching of dispersion characteristics between experimental and MPS-generated images. MPS enables us to create a variety of unsaturated porous media structures with different topologies but similar transport properties. From these images, we analyse transport over a large range of saturations and Peclet numbers. We observe pre-asymptotic non-Fickian transport regimes characterized by a variance increasing with time according to a power law with exponent α>1 . We find that α increases as saturation decreases, due to enhanced flow heterogeneity, and with higher Peclet numbers. This behaviour is confirmed through large-scale simulations.

Physical modelling of solute transport in porous media: evaluation of an imaging technique using UV excited fluorescent dye

Abstract:The development and evaluation of a 2-dimensional physical model, which is designed to assist in the characterisation of complex solute transport problems in porous media, is described. The laboratory model is a transparent 2-dimensional porous media of nominal thickness and uses a non-invasive imaging technique in conjunction with a fluorescent dye tracer (sodium fluorescein) to monitor solute movements. Under ultraviolet (UV) illumination the dye emits visible light which is imaged by a CCD (Charge Coupled Device) camera. The image is processed to estimate the 2-dimensional distribution of tracer concentrations. The system can successfully model a simple contaminant plume within a homogenous porous matrix constructed from glass beads (60-100 microm). Experimental results show that transverse dispersion coefficient was 3.9 x 10(-10) m2/s when sodium fluorescein transported in porous matrix with a walter velocity of 5.71 x 10(-6) m/s. The low transverse dispersion coefficient suggests that the molecular diffusion of solute cannot be neglected under low velocity of the water. The advantages of using UV rather than an ordinary light system are a reduction in noise and experimental errors. Errors due to light dispersion within the model are shown to be negligible for the current model. Since contaminant with aromatic rings are usually fluorescent and biological samples can be labelled by fluorescent dye, this imaging technique using UV excited fluorescent dye will be used to investigate biodegradation process in porous media.

Abstract:Sodium has been suggested as a tracer for brine in reservoir formations where a significant amount of sodium ion is found mainly in the aqueous phase. Fortunately, the most abundant sodium isotope, 23Na, is Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) active, making it possible to study the structure and dynamical properties of both bulk and pore confined fluid systems. We investigated the diffusion of key dissolved sodium species in bulk solution and porous media as a function of composition, ionic strength, and permeability of the carbonate samples using NMR relaxometry and pulsed-field gradient (PFG) NMR techniques. We use Indiana limestone as an example of natural porous media and water as a freely diffusible tracer and carrier. We demonstrate apparent diffusion measurement of sodium based on changes in spin–spin relaxation time (T2) signal in pore confinement. The diffusion rate of sodium decreases with increasing counter-ion size. This effect is greater at higher ionic strengths and lower chemical potentials in porous media. The reactive transport code, CrunchFlow, was used to complement the NMR experiments to simulate diffusion behavior in porous media. Combining these two methods provides a powerful approach to estimating effective diffusion coefficients in heterogeneous matrices. The modeling considers the influence of physical properties (porosity and tortuosity) and chemical properties (geochemical composition and chemical gradients). The results presented in this work highlight the advantage of measuring apparent diffusivity using NMR T2 relaxometry in conjunction with numerical simulation to derive effective diffusivity and the corresponding matrix properties (i.e., tortuosity) of the system.

Abstract:This paper studies the mechanisms of dispersion in the laminar flow through the pore space of a three-dimensional porous medium. We focus on preasymptotic transport prior to the asymptotic hydrodynamic dispersion regime, in which solute motion may be described by the average flow velocity and a hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient. High-performance numerical flow and transport simulations of solute breakthrough at the outlet of a sand-like porous medium evidence marked deviations from the hydrodynamic dispersion paradigm and identify two distinct regimes. The first regime is characterised by a broad distribution of advective residence times in single pores. The second regime is characterised by diffusive mass transfer into low-velocity regions in the wake of solid grains. These mechanisms are quantified systematically in the framework of a time-domain random walk for the motion of marked elements (particles) of the transported material quantity. Particle transitions occur over the length scale imprinted in the pore structure at random times given by heterogeneous advection and diffusion. Under globally advection-dominated conditions, i.e., Péclet numbers larger than 1, particles sample the intrapore velocities by diffusion and the interpore velocities through advection. Thus, for a single transition, particle velocities are approximated by the mean pore velocity. In order to quantify this advection mechanism, we develop a model for the statistics of the Eulerian velocity magnitude based on Poiseuille’s law for flow through a single pore and for the distribution of mean pore velocities, both of which are linked to the distribution of pore diameters. Diffusion across streamlines through immobile zones in the wake of solid grains gives rise to exponentially distributed residence times that decay on the diffusion time over the pore length. The trapping rate is determined by the inverse diffusion time. This trapping mechanism is represented by a compound Poisson process conditioned on the advective residence time in the proposed time-domain random walk approach. The model is parameterised with the characteristics of the porous medium under consideration and captures both preasymptotic regimes. Macroscale transport is described by an integro-differential equation for solute concentration, whose memory kernels are given in terms of the distribution of mean pore velocities and trapping times. This approach quantifies the physical non-equilibrium caused by a broad distribution of mass transfer time scales, both advective and diffusive, on the representative elementary volume (REV). Thus, while the REV indicates the scale at which medium properties like porosity can be uniquely defined, this does not imply that transport can be characterised by hydrodynamic dispersion.

A temporally relaxed theory of physically or chemically non-equilibrium solute transport in heterogeneous porous media

Abstract:Groundwater constitutes a critical component in providing fresh water for various human endeavors. Never-theless, its susceptibility to contamination by pollutants represents a significant challenge. A comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of solute transport in groundwater and soils is essential for predicting the spatial and temporal distribution of these contaminants. Presently, conventional models such as the mobile-immobile (MIM) model and the rate-limited sorption (RLS) model are widely employed to describe the non-Fickian behavior of solute transport. In this research, we present a novel approach to solute transport that is founded on the temporally relaxed theory of Fick's Law. Our methodology introduces two relaxation times to account for solute particle collisions and attachment, leading to the derivation of a new advection-dispersion equation. Our findings indicate that the relaxation times possess similar properties to the transport parameters in the MIM and RLS models, and our solution can be applied to accurately predict transport parameters from soil column experiments. Additionally, we discovered that the relaxation times are proportional to the magnitude of Peclet number. This innovative approach provides a deeper insight into solute transport and its impact on groundwater contamination.
Pore-scale simulation of multicomponent multiphase reactive transport with dissolution and precipitation

Abstract:Multicomponent multiphase reactive transport processes with dissolution–precipitation are widely encountered in energy and environment systems. A pore-scale two-phase multi-mixture model based on the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is developed for such complex transport processes, where each phase is considered as a mixture of miscible components in it. The liquid–gas fluid flow with large density ratio is simulated using the multicomponent multiphase pseudo-potential LB model; the transport of certain solute in the corresponding solvent is solved using the mass transport LB model; and the dynamic evolutions of the liquid–solid interface due to dissolution–precipitation are captured by an interface tracking scheme. The model developed can predict coupled multiple physicochemical processes including multiphase flow, multicomponent mass transport, homogeneous reactions in the bulk fluid and heterogeneous dissolution–precipitation reactions at the fluid–solid interface, and dynamic evolution of the solid matrix geometries at the pore-scale. The model is then applied to a physicochemical system encountered in shale gas/oil industry involving multiphase flow, multicomponent reactive transport and dissolution–precipitation, with several reactions whose rates can be several orders of magnitude different at a given temperature. The pore-scale phenomena and complex interaction between different sub-processes are investigated and discussed in detail.

Abstract:This paper deals with simulation of flow and transport in porous media such as transport of groundwater contaminants. We first discuss how macro scale equations are derived and which terms have to be closed by models. The transport of tracers is strongly influenced by pore scale velocity structure and large scale inhomogeneities in the permeability field. The velocity structure on the pore scale is investigated by direct numerical simulations of the 3D velocity field in a random sphere pack. The velocity probability density functions are strongly skewed, including some negative velocities. The large probability for very small velocities might be the reason for non-Fickian dispersion in the initial phase of contaminant transport. We present a method to determine large scale distributions of the permeability field from point-wise velocity measurements. The adjoint-based optimisation algorithm delivers fully satisfying agreement between input and estimated permeability fields. Finally numerical methods for convection dominated tracer transports are investigated from a theoretical point of view. It is shown that high order Finite Element Methods can reduce or even eliminate non-physical oscillations in the solution without introducing additional numerical diffusivity.

Abstract:We report a Lattice-Boltzmann scheme that accounts for adsorption and desorption in the calculation of mesoscale dynamical properties of tracers in media of arbitrary complexity. Lattice Boltzmann simulations made it possible to solve numerically the coupled Navier-Stokes equations of fluid dynamics and Nernst-Planck equations of electrokinetics in complex, heterogeneous media. Associated to the moment propagation scheme, it became possible to extract the effective diffusion and dispersion coefficients of tracers, or solutes, of any charge, e.g. in porous media. Nevertheless, the dynamical properties of tracers depend on the tracer-surface affinity, which is not purely electrostatic, but also includes a species-specific contribution. In order to capture this important feature, we introduce specific adsorption and desorption processes in a Lattice-Boltzmann scheme through a modified moment propagation algorithm, in which tracers may adsorb and desorb from surfaces through kinetic reaction rates. The method is validated on exact results for pure diffusion and diffusion-advection in Poiseuille flows in a simple geometry. We finally illustrate the importance of taking such processes into account on the time-dependent diffusion coefficient in a more complex porous medium.

Abstract:The dynamics of simultaneous flow of immiscible two-phase fluids at the steady state in the capillary force-dominated regime were investigated. It was described by the key state variables, including interfacial area between fluids, capillary pressure and relative permeability, as functions of fluid saturation. Based on the two-dimensional pore-scale simulations using the Shan-Chen multi-component lattice Boltzmann model (SCMC-LBM), the steady-state interfacial area, capillary pressure and relative permeability versus saturation relationships subjected to flow conditions, such as initial fluid distribution, saturation history and magnitude of hydraulic gradient, were examined. Also, the intrinsic differences in the interfacial area and capillary pressure versus saturation curves between at dynamic equilibrium in the steady-state infiltration and at quasi-static equilibrium in the transient displacement were explored. As the SCMC-LBM simulations revealed, the relative permeabilities of both fluids were insensitive to initial fluid distribution or saturation history because of the simultaneous steady-state flow dynamics, but dependent on the magnitude of hydraulic gradient due to the existence of a threshold hydraulic gradient. The hysteresis behaviours of interfacial area-saturation and capillary pressure–saturation curves were captured in the transient displacement but absent in the steady-state infiltration, and the unique interfacial area-capillary pressure–saturation surface at dynamic equilibrium did not tend to overlap with the one at quasi-static equilibrium. The hysteretic capillary pressure behaviour for these two flow patterns was of great theoretical and practical significances.
