Abstract:Growing vandalism and terrorist activities pose great challenges to securing the modern power grid. As a practical high-impact, low-frequency threat, the attackers could simultaneously sabotage multiple critical transmission lines in a coordinated manner to initiate the cascading failure for causing great blackout. Thus, it is pressing to study the hypothesized multiple line attack strategies. In this study, the static strategy, dynamic strategy and space-pruning searching strategy are proposed for more effectively identifying the critical lines in the multiple line attack scenarios. And the optimal selection of critical lines in the multiple lines attack is determined based on the criticality of the lines, which is modeled by several mathematical indices developed from graph theory or based on enumeration. The effectiveness of the proposed attack strategies is tested using three bulk IEEE test systems. This study provides some meaningful insights about malicious attacks targeting the critical transmission lines.

Abstract:The assessment of the discoloration caused by calcium hydroxide, triple antibiotic paste, and chlorhexidine gel when used as intra-canal medicaments in teeth undergoing root canal treatment is of interest. The study measured the discoloration over seven and fourteen days using a spectrophotometer. After obtaining ethical clearance, ninety anterior teeth requiring root canal therapy were selected based on eligibility criteria. Using basic randomization, participants were split up into three groups, each consisting of thirty patients. The colorimeter was used to measure preoperative, one and two weeks following the medication's removal. All groups showed significant discoloration, with 2% chlorhexidine gel (p≤0.03) and triple antibiotic paste (p≤0.02) causing the highest discoloration in the central region of teeth. The discoloration was inversely correlated with the remaining dentin thickness. Thus, intracanal medicaments used for endodontic treatment cause tooth discolouration.
Potential Crown Discoloration Induced by the Combination of Various Intracanal Medicaments and Scaffolds Applied in Regenerative Endodontic Therapy

Abstract:Background: Regenerative endodontics involves the use of various root canal medicaments and scaffolds, which may cause crown discoloration. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the combined crown discoloration of scaffolds [platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and blood clot] applied after administration of different medicaments [modified triple antibiotic paste including doxycycline (mTAPd), modified double antibiotic paste (mDAP), calcium hydroxide (CH), and propolis]. Methods: In total, 100 human mandibular premolar teeth were selected and prepared. The teeth were apically resected to simulate immature teeth. The positive and negative control groups (n = 10) consisted solely of blood-only and serum-only samples. The remaining 80 teeth were used for the experimental groups with four different medicaments. Three weeks later, either blood or PRF was applied as a scaffold after removing the medicaments (n = 10). Color changes were assessed before medication placement and at the end of the first, second, and third weeks, as well as on days 0, 1, 30, 60, and 90 after scaffold application. Analysis was carried out using repeated measures of variance, Friedman, one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, the dependent paired t-test, and Wilcoxon test. Results: Statistical significance was determined at P = 0.05. All groups including blood and the group including propolis and PRF combination, resulted in a significant increase in discoloration (P < 0.05) and discoloration exceeding clinically acceptable thresholds. Conclusions: CH and the modified versions of TAP (mTAPd) and DAP (mDAP) demonstrated an acceptable level of discoloration when used with a combination of PRF at day 90.
Comparative evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy of 3C antibiotic paste with triple antibiotic paste as root canal filling material for primary teeth: An in-vitro study

Abstract:Root canal infection in primary teeth is polymicrobial in nature. Most resistant micro-organisms, such as E.faecalis survive in chronic infection of the root canal at the periapical area and are difficult to remove by various root canal irrigants. C.albicans has been found in chronic infections of root canals of primary teeth due to its ability to invade dentinal tubules. The multiple bacteria strains which cause endodontic infections, make it difficult to clean root canals with a single effective antibiotic. Hence Triple Antibiotic Paste (TAP) has been previously introduced, consisting of ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, and minocycline. Although this mixture aids in pulp regeneration and has been used to disinfect root canal systems, it is linked to tooth discolouration. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the antimicrobial efficacy of a newly formulated 3C antibiotic paste (consisting of Ciprofloxacin, Clindamycin, and Cefaclor) with conventional TAP against E. faecalis and C. albicans . In this in-vitro laboratory study, pure culture of C. albicans and E. faecalis will be grown on Sabouraud’s dextrose agar (SD) agar and Brain heart infusion agar (BHI) agar respectively and will be suspended for 24 hours at 37°C. For comparison of antimicrobial efficacy, the zone of inhibition will be for the 3C antibiotic paste against conventional TAP (control) for E. faecalis and C. albicans, and will be determined using digital calliper in millimetre after every 24 and 72 hours. We hypothesise that the newly formulated 3C paste will have better antimicrobial efficacy when compared with conventional TAP. It is expected that a newly formulated 3C paste will prove to be the successful as root canal filling material for primary teeth.
Relationship Between Phospholipid Biosynthesis and the Efficiency of the Arsenate Transport System in Yeasts

Abstract:In studying the possibility that phosphoinositides which formed complexes with arsenic were involved in the arsenate transport system of yeasts, a comparative study of the phospholipid composition and metabolism was carried out both in Saccharomyces carslbergensis and in its arsenate-adapted variant, which showed a deficient inflow of arsenate. It was found that the lipid composition of the two organisms was quite similar, the main classes of phospholipids being phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphoinositides. The only difference was a 1.5- to 2-fold increase in the proportion of inositides in the arsenate-adapted cells. When the transport of arsenate became inactivated in the nonadapted yeasts after a 30- to 60-min exposure to 10−2m arsenate, an increment of inositides of 29 to 50% over the original level was also detected. A study of the incorporation of radioactivity from uniformly labeled 14C-maltose and from 32P-orthophosphate (32Pi) demonstrated a decreased rate of lipid biosynthesis in the arsenate-adapted cells as compared to the normal nonadapted ones. The turnover of the phosphate in phospholipids demonstrated no turnover in phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine, and a slow turnover in phosphoinositides. It could be inferred that a normal rate of phospholipid (phosphoinositides) biosynthesis is necessary to have a normal arsenate uptake and that inositide accumulation impairs both the mechanism responsible for the uptake and accumulation of arsenate and the rate of lipid biosynthesis. No differences were found in the deoxyribonucleic acid or protein content of the two types of cells. Also, the arsenate-adapted cells, once freed of external arsenate, showed an increased uptake of 32Pi from low external concentrations of phosphate (10−6 to 10−8m, 10-fold over that observed in AsS cells). These results are indicative of independent behavior in phosphate and arsenate transport systems.
Comparative evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy of various intracanal medicament in young permanent teeth: An in vivo study

Abstract:Introduction: Bacteria and their byproducts are key contributors to the onset and perpetuation of pulpoperiapical pathosis. Intracanal medication is vital in achieving successful endodontic outcomes as it targets and eradicates remaining microorganisms following biomechanical preparation. Aim and objective: The aim of the study was to compare and evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of calcium hydroxide (CH) paste, triple antibiotic paste (TAP), and probiotics (PBs) as intracanal medicament in 12-17-year-old children undergoing root canal treatment for the management of infected pulpal tissues in young permanent teeth. Materials and methods: A total of 30 patients aged 12-17 years indicated for endodontic therapy in maxillary incisors and with no systemic complications were selected. They were randomly divided into three groups, i.e., Group I - CH group, Group II - TAP, and Group III - PB allocating 10 teeth in each group. After access opening, the first sample (S1) was collected by inserting a paper point into the root canal, the second sample (S2) was collected immediately after biomechanical preparation, and the third sample (S3) was collected after 7 days, i.e., postintracanal medication. Samples were sent for microbiological analysis to assess the microbial count, and statistical analysis was done for the obtained data. Results: The three intracanal medicaments were successful in reducing the microbial counts of Enterococcus faecalis in the infected root canals. However, according to the results of the study, the PB group demonstrated greater effectiveness against E. faecalis compared to the CH group and displayed similar antimicrobial efficacy as the TAP group. Conclusion: PB exhibited antimicrobial efficacy comparable to TAP but greater than Ca (OH) 2 paste. Hence, PB can be utilized as an intracanal medicament in young permanent teeth.
Tooth discoloration induced by endodontic materials: a laboratory study

Abstract:Aim: To investigate the discoloration potential of endodontic materials using a bovine tooth model. Methodology: Two hundred and 10 dentine-enamel cuboid blocks (10 × 10 × 3.5 mm) were prepared out of the middle thirds of bovine tooth crowns. Standardized cavities were prepared in the walls of the pulp chamber leaving 2 mm of enamel and dentine on the labial wall of the crown. The specimens were randomly assigned to 14 groups (n = 15). Endodontic materials were placed into the cavities as follows: group A: empty, group B: blood, group C: calcium hydroxide, group D: ApexCal, group E: Ultracal XS, group F: Ledermix, group G: triple antibiotic paste (3Mix), group H: grey MTA(GMTA), group I: GMTA + blood, group J: white MTA (WMTA), group K: WMTA + blood, group L: Portland cement (PC), group M: PC + blood and group N: AH Plus. The cavities were sealed with composite and stored in water. Standardized colour measurement (VITA Easyshade compact) was performed at the following intervals: prior to (T0) and after placement of the filling (T1), 1 week (T2), 1 month (T3), 3 months (T4), 6 months (T5) and after 1 year (T6). Colour change (ΔE) values were calculated. A two-way analysis of variance was used to assess significant differences between the endodontic materials. The mean values of all groups were compared using the Tukey multiple comparison test (α = 0.05). Results: Significant differences were detected amongst the experimental groups after 12 months (P < 0.0001). The lowest colour change values were observed in the groups N (AH Plus, 3.2 ± 1.5), A (empty, 3.8 ± 1.4), L (PC, 4.1 ± 1.7), C (calcium hydroxide, 4.7 ± 1.5), E (Ultracal XS, 5.1 ± 1.9) and J (WMTA, 7.9 ± 6.7). The most discoloration was measured in groups G (3Mix, 66.2 ± 9.9) and F (Ledermix, 46.2 ± 11.6). PC showed the best colour stability amongst the Portland cement-based materials; however, when contaminated with blood (group M), a significantly higher ΔE value (13.6 ± 4.2) was detected (P = 0.032). Conclusion: Materials used in endodontics may stain teeth. Therefore, the choice of material should not rely solely on biological and functional criteria, but also take aesthetic considerations into account.
Comparative Evaluation of Antimicrobial Efficacy of Triple Antibiotic Paste Herbal Combination and Camphorated Monochlorophenol as Intracanal Medicaments against Enterococcus faecalis in Deciduous Molars: An In Vivo Study

Abstract:Aim: Compare the efficacy of triple antibiotic paste (TAP), herbal extracts, and camphorated monochlorophenol (CMCP) as intracanal medicaments against Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) in deciduous molars. Materials and methods: A total of 60 samples were collected from canals of first and second molars of 4-10-year-old children, with more than two-thirds root length, and fitting the inclusion criteria. Samples were collected at three intervals-S1 was collected just after access opening, S2 was collected after biomechanical preparation (BMP) and irrigation, and just before placement of medicament. Randomization was done to place the medicaments into three groups: group I-CMCP, group II-TAP, and group III-herbal combination. Sample S3 was taken 48 hours after removal of medicament from the canals. The collected samples were transported via Amies media to the laboratory, where they were anaerobically incubated for 24 hours. Growth of E. Faecalis was observed, and manual counting of the colony-forming unit (CFU) was done. The change in CFU in all samples was calculated, and the results were statistically analyzed. Results: The results show that there is a change from S1 (TAP = 118.67 ± 122.48, herbal = 109.07 ± 106.43; CMCP = 110.73 ± 120.53) to S2 (TAP = 34.13 ± 63.47; herbal = 27.67 ± 39.39; CMCP = 16.40 ± 26.32) and S3 (TAP = 12.33 ± 24.82; herbal = 4.73 ± 12.78; CMCP = 3.40 ± 7.12). It is seen that there is a significant difference seen from S1 to S2 in all three groups (p ≤ 0.05) using repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. This shows that all three medicaments were effective in reducing bacterial counts of E. Faecalis from sample S1 (pre) to S3 (post) significantly after exposure to root canal bacterial flora for 48 hours (2 days). The pairwise comparison of the change in CFU within each group, S1-S3, also shows significant changes. There is a significant decrease in CFU seen from S1 to S2 and S1 to S3 but not from S2 to S3 for all three groups, which was evaluated using the post hoc Bonferroni test. It was also observed that in between the canals, although there was a change from S1 to S3 in terms of the CFU, there was no significant difference in the decrease in the bacterial count when intercanal comparison was made. There was, however, a change that was seen to be significant when values from each canal were compared from S1 to S3. Conclusion: All three medicaments have successfully shown a decrease in the numbers of E. faecalis, which the study aimed at checking. Although the effect varied intergroups, it was mild, so herbal alternatives could be used instead of antibiotics and CMCP. Also, because the local application is effective in controlling interappointment flare-ups, the medicaments can be successfully given without having to prescribe systemic antibiotics. Probing Crystallinity of Graphene Samples via the Vibrational Density of States.

Abstract:The purity of graphene samples is of crucial importance for their experimental and practical use. In this regard, the detection of the defects is of direct relevance. Here, we show that structural defects in graphene samples give rise to clear signals in the vibrational density of states (VDOS) at specific peaks at high and low frequencies. These can be used as an independent probe of the defect density. In particular, we consider grain boundaries made of pentagon-heptagon pairs, and show that they lead to a shift of the characteristic vibrational D mode toward higher frequency; this distinguishes these line defects from Stone-Wales point defects, which do not lead to such a shift. Our findings may be instrumental for the detection of structural lattice defects using experimental techniques that can directly measure VDOS, such as inelastic electron tunneling and inelastic neutron spectroscopy.

Abstract:With increasing cases of odontogenic infections, advancements in the treatment modality gain utmost importance. Complexity in the anatomy of the root canal necessitates the selection of the correct medicament and disinfectant. Furthermore, exacerbation of the problem results due to improper cleaning and disinfection of the root canal space. In such cases, manual preparation and irrigation alone will be of no help. The treatment outcome mostly depends upon the correct selection and application of the proper intracanal disinfectant along with the proper choice of medicament. One such intracanal disinfectant is triple antibiotic paste (TAP), a mix of three antibiotics. It's the combined effect of the three drugs mixed in the paste that makes the mix a potent antimicrobial agent effective against microbes. This review aims to evaluate the properties of TAP, its composition, its various application, and its property to help maintain the vitality of the diseased pulp. This review also talks about its drawbacks and its application in primary teeth.
Effects of Tetracycline, EDTA and Citric Acid Application on Nonfluorosed and Fluorosed Dentin: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Fluorosis is one of the factors that may bring about mineralization changes in teeth. Routine treatment of root biomodification is commonly followed during Periodontal therapy. Background: The Purpose of the present study was to compare and evaluate the morphological changes in fluorosed and nonfluorosed root dentin subsequent to the application of Tetracycline, EDTA and Citric acid. Both fluorosed and nonfluorosed teeth comprising of periodontally healthy and diseased were included in this study. Method: Each of them was grouped into Tetracycline Hydrochloride, EDTA and Citric acid treatment groupes. Using scanning electron microscope (SEM), the photomicrographs of dentin specimens were obtained. Results: Showed that there was no significant difference in exposure of number of tubules in different groups, while significant increase in the tubular width and tubular surface area was seen in fluorosed healthy, followed by fluorosed diseased groups, nonfluorosed healthy and nonfluorosed diseased groups after root biomodification procedure using various root conditioning agents. The root biomodification procedure brings in definite difference between fluorosed and nonfluorosed dentin specimens.
Evaluation of the effectiveness of different treatment approaches in preventing coronal discoloration caused by regenerative endodontic treatment

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Teethmate desensitizer, a dentin bonding agent (DBA), Nd:YAG laser, and Er:YAG laser, which provides dentin tubule occlusion in the pulp chamber with different mechanisms, in preventing tooth discoloration due to regenerative endodontic treatment. Materials and methods: One hundred five extracted maxillary human incisors with single roots and single canals were included in the study. The apical third of each tooth was resected below the enamel-cementum junction (CEJ) to obtain a standard root length as 10 ± 1 mm. Root canal preparation was performed using the ProTaper Next files up to X5. Root canals were prepared with Gates Glidden (# 2-4) burs to simulate the immature root apex and an apical diameter of 1.1 ± 0.1 mm was obtained. The teeth were randomly divided into 7 groups (n = 15): DBA, Teethmate, Nd:YAG, Er:YAG, Biodentine, Blood, and Negative Control. Relevant dentin tubule occlusion methods were applied to DBA, Teethmate, Nd:YAG, and Er:YAG groups. Following dentin tubule occlusion procedures, Biodentine was placed on the blood clot after filling the root canals with blood up to 4 mm below the CEJ. No dentin tubule occlusion procedure was applied for Blood and Biodentine groups. Color measurement was performed with the spectrophotometer Vita Easyshade Advance before treatment, immediately after treatment, and at days 7, 30, and 90. Data were converted to L*a*b color values of Commission International de I'Eclairage (CIE L*a*b) and ΔE values were calculated. Two-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey test (p = 0.05) were performed for statistical analysis. Results: A clinically detectable color change was observed in all groups except for the negative control (ΔE ≥ 3,3). It was observed that Biodentine used alone has a potential for discoloration. It was determined that as the contact time with blood increased, tooth discoloration increased. However, no significant difference was found between dentin tubule occlusion methods in preventing color change (p > 0.05). Conclusions: It was determined that no dentin tubule occlusion method could 100% prevent discoloration caused by RET. Clinical relevance: DBA and Teethmate, which do not have a significant difference in terms of preventing color change, are considered to be suitable for dentin tubule occlusion due to their ease of application and low cost compared to Nd:YAG laser and Er:YAG laser.

METHODS Macroscopic and microscopic identification of roots, stems and leaves of Ligularia przewalskii were carried out with the methods of paraffin section, leaves epidermal section and powder transdermal section. RESULTS The microscopic characteristics included: Open collateral vascular bundles in stem were not in the same size and arranged in two rings; Lots of fiber bundles scattered in the column parts; There were two vascular bundles in principal vein of leaf; Anticlinal wall of upper epidermis cells was thickened like moniliform, lower epidermis were like waves with irregular; The type of stoma was anomocytic; Calcium oxalate acicular crystal could be seen in the powder. CONCLUSION These features can provide references for identification of Ligularia przewalskii.

Abstract:Abstract Objective: Many studies suggest that age at onset (AAO) is an important factor for clinically differentiating patients with juvenile and adult onset of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD). The present international study aimed to assess the prevalence of different AAO groups and compare related socio-demographic and clinical features in a large sample of OCD patients. Methods: A total of 431 OCD outpatients, participating in the ICOCS network, were first categorised in groups with childhood (≤12 years), adolescent (13–17 years) and adult-onset (≥18 years), then in pre-adult and adult onset (≥18 years) and their socio-demographic and clinical features compared. Results: Twenty-one percent (n = 92) of the sample reported childhood onset, 36% (n = 155) adolescent onset, and 43% (n = 184) adult onset. Patients with adult onset showed a significantly higher proportion of females compared with the other subgroups (χ2 = 10.9, p< 0.05). Childhood- and adolescent-onset patients had been more frequently treated with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), compared to adult-onset patients (χ2 = 11.5; p < 0.05). The pre-adult- versus adult-onset analysis did not show any additional significant difference. Conclusions: The present international multicentre study confirms that OCD onset occurs more frequently before adult age, with approximately one out of five patients showing childhood onset. Pre-adult onset was associated with higher rate of CBT, while adult onset was more prevalent in females.

Abstract:An unsymmetric cantilever geometry was used experimentally to determine the critical energy release rate values for cobalt chromium alloy-polymethylmethacrylate cement (CoCr alloy-PMMA) interfaces with satin finished, grit blasted, and plasma sprayed surface treatments applied to the CoCr alloy. Critical energy release rates of 0.013, 0.181, and 0.583 N/mm were found for the satin finish, grit blasted, and plasma sprayed CoCr alloy-PMMA interfaces, respectively. A finite element model of the experimental test specimen was used to determine the crack tip phase angles (-8.73 degrees to -27.1 degrees) that indicated that the tensile load applied to the specimens resulted in a tensile (mode I) and in-plane shear (mode II) loading at the crack tip. The experimental data suggest that a satin finish CoCr alloy-PMMA interface has minimal resistance to crack propagation when compared to grit blasted or plasma sprayed surface treatments.
Antifungal Effectiveness of Various Intracanal Medicaments against Candida albicans: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Aim and objective: To evaluate the antifungal efficiency of various intracanal medicaments against Candida albicans. Materials and methods: One-hundred and forty extracted human mandibular premolar teeth were decoronated, and the biomechanical preparation was done in crown-down technique. 10 μL culture suspension of C. albicans was placed into the prepared root canal space of all the teeth. After 21 days of incubation, all the teeth were randomly divided into 7 groups with 20 teeth per each group. Group I: triple antibiotic powder (TAP) mixed with 3% chitosan solution; group II: TAP mixed with macrogol-propylene (MP) glycol; group III: chlorhexidine-guttapercha (CHX-GP); group IV: Vitapex; group V: 2% chlorhexidine gel; group VI: calcium hydroxide paste; group VII: normal saline with cotton (positive control) were used as intracanal medicaments, and the samples were incubated for 14 days. Intracanal medicaments were then completely removed using the canal brush. Dentinal chips were harvested from the walls of the root canal space in all samples using Gates-Glidden drills, were transferred into test tubes containing saline, and were serially diluted and placed in 140 Sabouraud dextrose agar plates, incubated at 37°C for 48 hours. Colony forming units (CFUs) of C. albicans were then counted using the digital colony counter. Results: One-way ANOVA test showed statistically significant difference among the seven groups, as the p value was < 0.001. Tukey's post hoc test showed intergroup comparison between group I and group V; group II and group III were statistically nonsignificant as p value was >0.05. Conclusion: 2% chlorhexidine gel and TAP mixed with 3% chitosan solution showed superior antifungal efficiency against C. albicans. Clinical significance: Chitosan solution's inherent antifungal efficiency and slow and controlled drug release make it as an effective alternate carrier in mixing it with TAP instead of mixing TAP with MP.

Abstract:Purpose To investigate the effect of the vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1) inhibitor RTU-1096 on retinal morphologic changes and ocular inflammation after retinal laser photocoagulation in mice. Methods C57BL/6JJcl mice were fed a diet containing RTU-1096, a specific inhibitor for VAP-1, or a control diet ad libitum for 7 days. Laser photocoagulation was performed on the peripheral retina of the animals. The semicarbazide sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) activities in plasma and chorioretinal tissues were measured. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images were acquired before and at 1, 3, and 7 days after laser photocoagulation, and thickness of the individual retinal layers was measured. Intravitreal leukocyte infiltration was assessed by histologic analysis. The expression level of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in retinal tissues were examined by quantitative real-time PCR. Results One day after laser photocoagulation, the thickness of the outer nuclear layer (ONL) increased in the laser group compared with in the control group, and RTU-1096 administration abrogated the ONL thickening. Histologic analysis and OCT observation revealed that laser photocoagulation caused infiltration of inflammatory cells and the appearance of hyperreflective foci at the vitreoretinal surface, both of which were suppressed by RTU-1096 administration. In addition, systemic administration of RTU-1096 reduced upregulation of the leukocyte adhesion molecules ICAM-1 in the retina. Conclusions The current data indicate that VAP-1/SSAO inhibition may be a potential therapeutic strategy for the prevention of macular edema secondary to scatter laser photocoagulation in patients with ischemic retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy.
Spectrophotometric analysis of crown discoloration following the use of silver nanoparticles combined with calcium hydroxide as intracanal medicament

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Optimal antibacterial efficacy of intracanal medicaments containing silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) has been well documented. However, concerns remain regarding the effect of Ag-NPs on tooth color. This study aimed to assess the effects of calcium hydroxide (CH) mixed with Ag-NPs as intracanal medicaments on tooth color. The effect of location of application of medicament on the degree of discoloration was evaluated as well.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty extracted single-rooted, single-canal human teeth with straight roots, no caries, no cracks or fractures were collected and accessed. After cleaning and shaping of the root canals, the teeth were randomly divided into two experimental groups (n=20) with CH and CH plus Ag-NPs as intracanal medicaments and a control group of saline (n=10). Experimental groups were randomly divided into two equal subgroups of A, where medicament was applied below the cemento enamel junction (CEJ) and B where the medicament was applied to the root canal and pulp chamber. Color change (ΔE) was assessed using a spectrophotometer in CIELAB system at five time points of beforemedicaments application (T0), immediately medicaments placement (T1), one week (T2), one month (T3) and three months (T4) after the application of medicaments. Data were analyzed using two-way and three-way ANOVA.RESULTS: Color change in Ag-NPs plus CH and CH groups was not significantly different at any time point (P=0.23). Increased exposure time in both groups did not increase the ΔE (P >0.05). Significant differences were noted in ΔE between subgroups A and B (P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS: Addition of Ag-NPs to CH caused no significant change in tooth color compared to the application of CH alone. Abstract:Abstract Introduction: Success of endodontic treatment relies on minimizing microbial load by chemo-mechanical preparation and intra-canal medication(ICM). Calcium hydroxide based ICMs have known disadvantages. Calcium silicate-based cements(CSC) exhibit antibacterial activity, thus promoting researchers to experiment with their formulations to use them as ICMs. Aim: Evaluation and comparison of the antimicrobial efficacy of two experimental CSC (MTA & Biodentine + 2%chlorhexidine) and Bio-C Temp against E.faecalis. Methods and Material: Test materials were divided into four groups namely Group1-Bio-C Temp, Group2-UltraCAL XS, Group3-Biodentine+2%CHX and Group4-MTA+2%CHX. Direct contact test was done by placing a standardized suspension of E.faecalis on test materials and bacterial growth was assessed spectrophotometrically using ELISA at one, three and seven days. Statistical Analysis: Data was analysed using one-way ANOVA, Tukey’s multiple post hoc test and paired-t test. Results: Intragroup comparison revealed decreased mean optical density(OD) in groups 1, 2, and 4; no significant difference in group 3. Intergroup comparison showed statistical differences in mean OD values between groups (3 and 4); groups (1 and 2) at days one(p-0.018) and three(p-0.035), but no difference individually. Group 4 showed the highest antimicrobial efficacy on day seven. Conclusion: MTA+2%CHX & Biodentine+2%CHX showed better antimicrobial efficacy and hence could be used as potential ICMs.
Antibacterial Activity of Three Tooth-Colored Restorative Materials against Streptococcus mutans : An in Vitro Study

Abstract:Background: Antibacterial activity of restorative materials had an important role in preventingcaries recurrence.Aim of the study: to evaluate the antibacterial effect of three tooth-colored restorative materials.Materials and Methods: Three commercially available tooth-colored restorative materials,GC Fuji (Group I), Riva self-cure (Group II) and Versa Comp (Group III) were evaluated. The testsamples of restorative materials were manipulated in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.Eppendorf tubes were filled with constant measured amount of the three tested restorative materials;a conical cavity was created in the center of each material after curing. Bacterial suspension wasprepared from fresh overnight growth of Streptococcus mutans on blood agar. 50 μL of bacterialsuspension was placed in the conical cavity and around the restorative material inside eacheppendorf tube and then were incubated. At the end of incubation period, eppendorf tubes wereremoved from candle jar and viable bacterial count was estimated.Results: It has been found that at day1, day 2 as well as day 3, there was decrease in bacterialcount but, there was no statistically significant difference between the three groups. On studyingeach group separately, group I there was a statistically significant decrease in bacterial count at day2 and group II and III showed statistically significant decrease from day 2 to day 3.Conclusions: Fuji LC was more effective against Streptococcus mutans, than Riva self-cureand Versa comp, but with no significant difference.
