Abstract:Milk samples consumed in the World, contain mostly important nutrients as well as toxic elements. Quality control is necessary in the production and processing of milk samples. Also, transportation and storage conditions have effects on the composition of samples. In this study, the concentrations of zinc, iron, chromium, nickel, copper, cadmium and lead in fourteen different brands of milk samples (pasteurized and long life) purchased from markets of Turkey in Ankara were determined and evaluated by using flame and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometers (FAAS, ETAAS). Graphite furnace heating program for Cd and Pb determinations in samples was optimized in the absence or presence of nickel (Ni) matrix modifier. The limits of detection (LOD) for Cd and Pb determined by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) in the presence of Ni matrix modifier were 1.2 and 1.5 μg L-1, respectively. The LODs of Cu, Fe, Zn, Cr and Ni determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry were 18.4, 71.2, 20.8, 2.1 and 2.3 μg L-1, respectively. The mean concentrations and standard deviations (±s) of Zn, Ni, Cu, Cr, Fe, Cd and Pb were 1.7 ± 0.4 mg kg-1, 0.24 ± 0.08 mg kg-1, 0.8 ± 0.2 mg kg-1, 0.8 ± 0.6 mg kg-1, 1.9 ± 0.6 mg kg-1, 46 ±5 μg kg-1 and 28 ± 3 μg kg-1, respectively found in fourteen different milk samples. The contents of elements found in samples were compared with permissible limits recommended in the health criteria by the World Health Organization (WHO) and literature values. It was concluded that the tools and materials used in milk production were not caused to heavy metal contamination. The metal concentrations in the milk samples were within the limits of the maximum permissible metal values given by WHO/FAO, the other regulations and the Turkish Food Codex.
Comparison of Heavy Metal Levels of Organic and Conventional Milk and Milk Products in Turkey

Abstract:This study aimed to determine and compare aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) levels in conventional and organic milk, white cheese, and butter samples which are sold in the markets of Turkey. Within the scope of the study, totally 72 samples (36 for organic, and 36 for conventional) were collected, and analyzed between March 2010 and February 2011. After the samples were burned by microwave burning, element measurements were performed on atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) device. As a result of the study, on the 49 samples (29 conventional, 20 organic) of the 72 collected product, element levels were determined above the limit of detection (LOD) (0.02 ppm). Pb and Al were the most common elements above the LOD. However, milk samples with a Pb level above the LOD still remained below the limit reported by the Turkish Food Codex Regulation for Contaminants. Since Turkish Food Codex Regulation does not have legal limits for Al, As, Cd and Pb for dairy products (cheese and butter), it was accepted as safe in terms of Al, As, Cd and Pb according to food limits in Turkish Food Codex and ADI values of FAO / WHO.
Analysis of trace metal concentrations in raw cow's milk from three dairy farms in North Gondar, Ethiopia: chemometric approach

Abstract:Concentrations of essential (Cu, Mn, and Zn) and toxic (Cr, Cd, and Pb) trace metals in 30 raw cow's milk samples were quantified using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The samples were collected from the Nara-Awudarda, Tana-Abo, and Kosoye Amba-Rass sites in North Gondar, Ethiopia, preserved in a deep freezer (-20 °C), and then digested by Kjeldahl apparatus with HNO3/H2O2 (5:2; v/v) at 300 °C for 2.5 h. The data were subject to principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Overall hazard quotient (HQ) and carcinogenic risk (CR) values were also estimated to assess metal-related health risks. The mean concentrations of Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in the milk samples ranged 0.468-0.828, 1.614-2.806, 0.840-1.532, 1.208-5.267, ND-0.330, and ND-0.186 mg/kg, respectively. The lowest values were obtained for Kosoye Amba-Rass milk samples, while the highest were found for those collected from Nara-Awudarda milk samples, probably due to high mineral enrichment and metal leaching (especially Cd and Pb) from coal deposits. PCA revealed clustering of samples with respect to their geographic origin. Validation of PLS-DA model showed 100% classification efficiency using external validation samples and detected Cd and Cu as trace metal markers. The HQ and CR values were within the safe level; however, the former is close to the alert threshold level for Nara-Awudarda milk samples. Thus, further studies on common foodstuffs, constituting a higher proportion in the local diet, are required in this area to provide a complete risk assessment.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the occurrence of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in total mixed rations (TMR) and aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in raw and commercial milk in northern China during winter season. A total of 22 feed samples, as well as the corresponding 84 raw milk and 69 commercial milk samples were randomly collected from north-west, northeast and north areas of China from November 2019 to January 2020. High performance liquid chromatography and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay method were applied to detect AFB1 and AFM1. All samples presented AFB1 (30?370 ng/L) and AFM1 (10?430 ng/L) levels under the legal limit of China for raw milk (10 ?g/L) and commercial milk (500 ng/L). While 31.8% of TMRs and 34.5% of raw milk samples exceeded the European Union (EU) legal limit for AFM1 in raw milk (5 ?g/L) and commercial milk (50 ng/L). Compared with the samples from northeast and north areas of China with the similar AFB1 concentration, samples from northwest area of China exhibited higher AFM1 level (mean = 130 ng/L), thus presenting a higher transfer ratio from AFB1 to AFM1. A Linear relationship was observed between AFB1 in TMRs and AFM1 in raw milk. In conclusion, all samples from northern China presented AFB1 and AFM1 levels under Chinese legal limit and only about 30% of the tested samples exceeded the EU legal limit. However, the aflatoxin contamination in northwest area of China should be paid more attention to due to the high AFM1 levels and high variance in milk samples.

Abstract:Concentrations of toxic heavy metals (cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb)) and major nutritional and trace elements (Ca, Mg, P, Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, Zn) were analyzed in the milk of Simmental (n = 20) and Holstein-Friesian (n = 20) cows from an organic farm. Elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma emission atomic spectrometry. The conducted research showed that the milk of Simmental cows was characterized by the more advantageous mineral composition and lower concentration of noxious heavy metals compared to the milk of Holstein-Friesian cows. In the milk of Simmental cows, significantly lower concentrations of Pb and Cd (P < 0.001) and Cu (P < 0.05) and significantly higher concentrations of Fe and Mg (P < 0.05) as well as nonsignificantly higher concentrations of Ca, Mn, and Se were found. In the milk of both breeds, very low Cu concentrations were recorded. The higher-than-recommended concentration of Pb in milk was also found. In the milk of both breeds, the significant positive correlations between concentrations of the following elements were observed: Pb–Cd, Pb–Se, Cd–Se, Cd–Mn, Zn–Cu, Zn–P, Ca–P, Ca–Mg, and Mg–P. The correlations between other elements within each of the analyzed breeds separately were also found.

Essential and Non-essential Trace Elements in Milks and Plant-Based Drinks

Abstract:Although milk and plant-based drinks are widely consumed foodstuffs with high nutritional value, their consumption may also mean intake of non-essential/toxic elements becoming a risk for human health. This study was aimed at determining the concentrations of essential (Ca, Co, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni and P) and non-essential/toxic (Hg, Pb, U and V) elements in milks (cow and goat), plant-based drinks (soy, almond, rice and oat) and infant formulas from organic and conventional production systems. Lactose-free, fresh and ultra-high-temperature (UHT) milks were also included. Chemical analyses were performed by means of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The content of the elements hereby assessed did not depend on the production system and the presence of lactose. However, significant differences were found in the concentrations of multiple elements when comparing sterilization methods, source (animal vs. plant-based) and animal species. Non-essential elements were not detected in milks and plant-based drinks, excepting Pb, which was detected in three samples. While the consumption of goat milk is recommended, considering the global intake of essential elements and the absence of non-essential elements, further studies should be conducted to confirm the absence of non-target toxic elements at very low trace levels. On the other hand, the best plant-based drinks are those made up with almonds (intake of Ca) and soy (K and Mg). The current results should be useful to help the population to balance the benefits and risks from milks and plant-based drinks consumption, as well as to adapt their dietary habits.
Analyses of Essential Elements and Heavy Metals by Using ICP-MS in Maternal Breast Milk from Şanlıurfa, Turkey

Abstract:Maternal breast milk is a unique biological matrix that contains essential micronutrients. Potentially heavy metals may also affect infants’ health and growth through maternal breast milk. The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the essential elements and heavy metals of maternal breast milk of nursery mothers residing in Şanlıurfa province, Turkey. Maternal breast milk concentrations of sodium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, iron, copper, zinc, arsenic, and lead were analyzed in a random sample of the first time in urban and suburban nursery Turkish mothers ( n : 42). Eight essential elements and two heavy metals were analyzed using ICP-MS after microwave digestion. For bivariate analyses of variables, we use nonparametric Spearman’s correlation coefficient test. The mean concentrations of essential elements and heavy metals were as follows: sodium 330 ± 417 mg/L, magnesium 32.6 ± 15.5 mg/L, phosphorus 156 ± 46.2 mg/L, potassium 488 ± 146 mg/L, calcium 193 ± 53.2 mg/L, iron 1.65 ± 1.43 mg/L, copper 0.54 ± 0.46 mg/L, zinc 2.89 ± 3.23 mg/L, arsenic < 1 μ g/L, and lead < 1 μ g/L. Concentrations of heavy metals in maternal breast milk may have the important implication that it is not affected by environmental pollution in this province. This study provides reliable information about maternal breast milk concentrations of nursery mothers residing in Şanlıurfa, Turkey, and also compares the relations between essential elements and socioeconomic conditions, residing areas, and using copper equipment for food preparation of which some have not previously been reported.
Impact of grazing around industrial areas on milk heavy metals contamination and reproductive ovarian hormones of she-camel with assessment of some technological processes on reduction of toxic residue concentrations

Abstract:Heavy metals are one of the most toxic chemical pollutants of the environment. Their hazards not restricted to human but extend to animal productivity and reproductively. The present study aimed to assess the impact of grazing around industrial areas on the levels of copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al) residues in milk samples collected from dromedary she-camels and studying their effects on some ovarian hormones. In addition, the study aimed to investigate methods of removal of the toxic concentrations of these heavy metals in milk by applying different technological processes. Blood and milk samples were collected from 30 dromedary she-camels, 15 grazing in non-industrial areas (group A) and 15 grazing in industrial areas (group B). Detection of the levels of these heavy metals in milk was done. Ovarian hormones investigation on the blood was performed. Different technological processes such as boiling, skimming and fermentation were applied to all contaminated samples to reduce the toxic concentrations of these heavy metals. Results revealed that all examined milk samples in both groups contained Cu, while 40% of group A and 100 % of group B contained Al residues with different concentrations. The levels of Cu and Al residues in samples of group A not exceeded the maximum residual limit (MRL) set by World Health Organization (WHO) while 60% and 100% of milk samples in group B contained Cu and Al residues exceeded MRL, respectively. Technological processes induce variant changes in the levels of these metals in milk. Heat treatment of milk in Al vats leads to leaching of Al from containers to the milk causing significant increase in Al load, while Cu level was not significantly affected. Boiling in stainless-steel containers decreased the levels of Al and Cu but in non-significant levels. Regarding skimming process, small amount of Cu and Al escaped into the skimmed milk while greater amount were recovered in the cream. Fermentation by probiotic bacteria showed that milk fermentation has non-significant effect on Cu and Al levels. Investigation of ovarian hormones (estrogen and progesterone) revealed presence of a signification reduction in the levels of these hormones in group B compared to group A. In addition, a negative correlation was found between these heavy metals and ovarian hormones concentrations in the blood. It is concluded that grazing of dromedary camels around industrial areas induce heavy metals toxicity represented by excretion of these metals in milk and significant reduction on ovarian function showed by reduction of estrogen and progesterone levels. Technological processes such as skimming decreased the levels of Al and Cu residues in milk.

Abstract:Although milk and dairy products are almost complete food, they can contain toxic heavy elements with potential hazards for consumers. This review aims to provide a comprehensive report on the occurrence, concentration, and health risks of selected heavy metals in pasteurized and sterilized milk recorded worldwide. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) was used to develop this systematic review. Databases included the Web of Knowledge, Scopus, Scientific Information Database, Google Scholar, and PubMed from inception until January 2023. Keywords related to the terms "Heavy metals", "Arsenic" and "Pasteurized and sterilized milk" and "Risk Assessment" were used. The potential health risks to human health from milk daily consumption were estimated using extracted data on heavy metals concentration based on metal estimated daily intake, target hazard quotient, and carcinogenic risk. A total of 48 potentially relevant articles with data on 981 milk samples were included in the systematic review. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry were the most common valid methods to measure heavy metals in milk samples. Following the initial evaluation, Cu, Cd, Zn, and Pb were the most contaminants, which exceeded the maximum permissible criteria in 94%, 67%, 62%, and 46% of the milk samples tested. Relying on target hazard quotient and carcinogenic risk results, milk consumers in 33(68.75%) and 7 (14.5%) studies were exposed to moderate to high levels of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk, respectively. The highest level of risk is due to the consumption of pasteurized and sterilized milk detected in Pakistan, Brazil, Egypt, Slovakia, and Turkey. The elevated levels of heavy metals in milk samples, especially Pb and Cd is a public health concern; therefore, maximum control and strict regulations must be adopted to decrease heavy metals contaminants in the dairy industry. Further studies are required to develop safe milk processing and handling methods for the decontamination of heavy metals in milk and its products.

Abstract:This study investigates the contamination of cow milk with aluminum (Al) and its potential health implications, particularly for children. Cow milk samples were collected from both nonexposed and exposed areas in Sindh, based on the source of livestock drinking water (fresh canals and groundwater). An environmental friendly deep eutectic solvent (DES) was used with ultrasonic-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (UDLLμE) to enrich trace amounts of Al in whey milk and water samples. The enriched samples were then analyzed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Certified reference materials were employed to validate the methodology, and the experimental results exhibited acceptable conformity. The DES-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method was environmental friendly, devoid of acids and oxidizing agents, and used safe and inexpensive components for routine trace metal analysis in diverse samples. The resulting data revealed that Al in whey milk samples was observed in the range of 31-45 %, corresponding to (160-270) μg L<sup>-1</sup> and (700-1035) μg L<sup>-1</sup> in nonexposed and exposed whole cow milk samples, respectively. Additionally, it was observed that milk boiling in Al utensil for 10-20 min enhanced the Al levels from 3 to 8% of its total contents in milk samples.

Abstract:The contents of amino acid and trace metal elements in the milk of camel have been determinated. The results show that the total amount of amino acid in the milk of camel is 1.07 times higher than those of milk. The total amount of necessary amino acid in the milk of camel is 1.08 times higher than those of milk .The content of trace metal elements needed in the human body is almost higher than those of milk.

Abstract:The processed forms of milk, branded liquid, and power milk available in Dhaka city, the capital of Bangladesh, were investigated for essential and trace metal/metalloids regarding nutritional and human health risk aspects. For this, the potential nutritional contribution, estimated daily intake (EDI) and non-carcinogenic risk for six different life stages with male and female categories, as well as the carcinogenic risk for children and adults of both genders, were addressed. In total, 46 branded liquid and powder milk samples were considered for this analysis employing atomic absorption spectroscopy. The concentration of essential elements showed the trends of K > Ca > Na > Mg > Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu and K > Ca > Na > Mg > Fe > Cu > Mn > Zn for liquid and powder milk samples, respectively, but the potentially hazardous one showed the same trends (Cr > Pb > Hg > As > Cd) for both items. Except for Cr, Hg, and Fe, the elemental compositions of both milk categories differed considerably (< 0.05). Compared to the threshold values for milk samples (liquid and powder), Fe (19% and 27%), Mn (100% and 63%), Cu (0% and 23%), Zn (94% and 0%), Pb (25% and 13%), and Cr (0% and 3%) showed above the permissible limits. The nutrient input was the highest for Ca (27.2% and 18.7%), followed by Mg, K, and Na. The EDI of studied elements was within the daily permissible limit in both the milk category (except age group (≤ 3) and the female category). The non-carcinogenic risk assessment showed that the age groups ≤ 3 for liquid milk and ≤ 3 and 3 1) in the case of Cr, Cd, As, Zn, and Mn. The probable carcinogenic risks indicated an unacceptable risk level (< 1.00E-04) for the ingestion of Cr through powder milk samples for children in male and female categories. Finally, it believes that green cow farming practices and green milk processing technology, as well as continuous monitoring of toxic metals, can limit the ultimate risk worldwide.

Abstract:To study the correlation between mastitis occurrence and trace elements levels,30 milk samples were collected from healthy Holstein dairy cows and mastitis cows.Milk contents of six microelements including iron(Fe),copper(Cu),zinc(Zn),manganese(Mn),magnesium(Mg),cobalt(Co) were measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry(FAAS) and compared.The results showed that Cu,Fe,Co and Zn contents in mastitis milk were significantly lower than normal milk(P<0.05 or P<0.01).However,there were no remarkable differences of Mn and Mg contents between two groups(P>0.05).In conclusion,there was a correlation between mastitis occurrence and trace element contents.

Abstract:Quantitative analysis of heavy metals and nutrients in food helps indicate the safety and quality of food for final consumers. The present study was conducted to assess the presence of heavy metals (arsenic, copper, mercury, chromium, and lead) and the nutritional value of calcium in branded milk and yogurt to evaluate health risks for consumers. Ten (10) samples of branded milk and dairy products manufactured in Nigeria were purchased. The metal contents of the samples were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The concentrations of calcium in the milk samples were between 9.33 ± 0.0023 and 18 ± 0.0071 ppm and were detected in all samples. Arsenic concentrations ranged from 0.45 ± 0.00042 to 2.48 ± 0.00064 ppm in eight branded samples but were undetected in two samples. Chromium levels were undetected in most samples, except for two with concentrations of 0.12±0.00049 ppm and 0.23±0.00021 ppm, respectively. Copper ranged from 0.032±0.00021 ppm to 0.129±0.00021 ppm in six samples. Mercury levels were detected in six samples at a concentration of 1.0±1.0 ppm. Lead concentrations ranged from 0.15±0.00064 to 0.29±0.00028 ppm in three samples. The study found heavy metals above the ideal concentration in branded milk and dairy products in Nigeria, highlighting the need for quality control measures during production to prevent contamination.

Abstract:Evidence of element speciation in biological fluids is scarce and fragmentary in the literature. On the other hand, it is well known that chemical speciation analysis is prone to error due to contamination, modification or breaking up of the metal-organic moiety link during the separation processes, as well as to insufficient detection power for element quantification in the various fractions. Therefore, there is a keen need for sensitive and reliable speciation methods. We explored the analytical capabilities of size exclusion chromatography (SEC) in conjunction with ultrasonic nebulization inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (UN-ICP-AES) for the speciation of Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn and Zn in human milk. We applied the method to assess concentration range and binding pattern of the said elements in the milk of 60 lactating mothers (19-40 years of age) representative of different areas of Italy. The total concentration ranges found were in good agreement with those reported in the literature. These levels were as follows (in ng ml(-1)): Ca, 306 000+/-11 760; Cu, 370+/-30; Fe, 650+/-40; Mg, 23 000+/-510; Mn, 30+/-2; and Zn, 2720+/-70. The influence of factors such as age (over or under 30) and residence area (urban or rural) of the mothers on the total concentration of the elements was also evaluated. Magnesium concentration was higher for mothers >30, while higher Zn levels were found for maternal age <30. Copper was higher in women living in urban areas. Moreover, strong positive Ca-Mg and Fe-Mn associations and significant negative Cu-Zn correlations were found. The chromatographic separation yielded five fractions. The first of these presumably accounted for caseins (alpha(s), beta and k) aggregates; the second peak mainly contained immunoglobulins (Igs); the third could be traced back to human serum albumin (HSA) and lactoferrin (LF); the fourth could be entirely ascribed to alpha-lactalbumin (alpha-La); and the fifth accounted for all substances with relatively low molecular weights, such as non-proteic compounds. As anticipated, the elements investigated showed peculiar associations with the components of the milk. Copper and Fe appeared homogeneously spread over all the organic components. Calcium and Mg preferably bound to low molecular weight compounds. Manganese had a peculiar pattern as it was found in considerable percentage in the first and fifth fractions. As for Zn, the highest percentage was found in the fraction corresponding to alpha-lactalbumin.
Determination of toxic elemental levels in whey milk of different cattle and human using an innovative digestion method: risk assessment for children < 6.0 months to 5 years

Abstract:In present study, the toxic elements, arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), were determined in whey milk samples obtained from various cattle (cow, goat, buffalo, sheep, camel) and human subjects of different areas of Sindh, Pakistan, based on consuming drinking water (exposed area) and surface water (control/non-exposed area). The whey milk was separated from casein by lowering the pH, and heating in an ultrasonic bath at 60 °C for 5 min and centrifuged. The whey milk samples were treated with deep eutectic solvent, prepared from choline chloride–oxalic acid (ChCl–Ox) at different mole ratio. Effects of different parameters on digestion efficiency of whey milk samples, including time and temperature of electric hot plate, mole ratio, and volumes of deep eutectic solvent were examined. The total levels of all selected toxic elements were also detected in whole milk samples of all exposed and nonexposed cattle and human, after acid digestion method. The validity of the proposed method was established by a conventional acid digestion method of selected whey milk samples and spiked certified standards in replicate real whey milk samples. The resulted elements obtained after proposed and conventional heating system were determined by inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry. The % of all three toxic elements found in whey milk samples were 24 to 50% of their total content in milk samples of different cattle and human. The As, Cd, and Pb contents in cattle and human milk consumed contaminated groundwater was significantly higher (2- to 3-fold) than those values observed for milk samples of cattle, who receive drinking water from fresh canal water ( p < 0.01). Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of aflatoxin M-1 (AFM(1)) in Chinese liquid milk products. A total of 190 liquid milk samples, including 168 ultrahigh-temperature-treated milk samples and 22 pasteurized milk (PM) samples, were collected in August 2019. A screening assay with the Charm rapid test kit and a confirmation method with high-performance liquid chromatography were used for AFM(1) analysis. Nine (4.74%) samples were screened positive, of which 5 (2.11%) samples were confirmed with concentration levels of 0.022 to 0.049 mu g/kg. The AFM(1) levels confirmed were all below the maximum residue levels set by China, the European Union, the United States, and the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The detection rate of AFM(1) in domestic milk samples was 3.39%, while no AFM(1) was detected in samples of imported milk. The prevalences of AFM(1) detected in three groups of brands were as follows: group I, the major brands of China. 2.70%; group II, the local city domestic brands, 4.55%; and group III, the brands imported into China, 0. The detection rate of AFM(1) was significantly higher in PM samples (9.09%) than in ultrahigh-temperature-treated samples (1.19%) (P < 0.05). Although the residue level of AFM(1) did not exceed the maximum residue levels in any of the samples, the higher detection rate in local Chinese brands, especially in PM samples, deserves the attention of the Chinese government and consumers.
A sequential approach for optimal broadcast scheduling in packet radio networks

Abstract:An important problem that arises in the design of packet radio networks is that of scheduling access to the high speed communications channel in such a way as to avoid interference while keeping the frame length to a minimum. The broadcast scheduling problem is known to be NP-hard and to date, this problem has been formulated as a nonlinear discrete optimization problem for a given frame length, and solved via heuristic approaches by parametrically varying the length of the frame. This paper presents a linear integer programming formulation for the composite problem of maximizing channel utilization while minimizing the length of the frame. It then introduces a solution approach based on solving two relatively easier (though still NP-complete) integer programs in succession. Computational experiments are conducted on a set of benchmark cases and additional randomly generated problem instances. Results show that this sequential integer programming approach is very effective, solving all the problems optimally within a few seconds. These results imply that optimal solutions can be identified in very little time for problems of realistic size, and that heuristic approaches will be needed only when problems get much larger than those considered in the literature to date.

Abstract:Background and Aim: Monitoring food quality and safety remain a pressing issue. The intermediate results of the study on the residual amounts of heavy and toxic elements in food products are presented herein. The aim of this study was the determination of heavy metals in milk and fermented milk products from basic farms in the Almaty region, Kazakhstan. Materials and Methods: A total of 120 raw milk samples and 80 cottage cheese samples were analyzed. The milk and cottage cheese samples were subjected to mineralization during the analysis to remove organic impurities and determine the heavy metal concentrations using atomic absorption spectrometry. Results: The contents of cadmium, lead, and arsenic in all raw materials and food products did not exceed the maximum permissible concentrations. Conclusion: The dairy samples showed low contents of cadmium, mercury, lead, and arsenic that did not exceed the allowable concentrations for basic farms in the Almaty region.
