Abstract:Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence, genotype, and distribution of cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) in women living in southeast Turkey. Materials and methods: A total of 13,300 cervical smear materials were scanned and 899 cases found to be HPV-positive were included in the study. Cases were divided into seven groups according to age (under 19 years of age, 20-24, 25-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and over 60 years old) and six groups according to HPV types (HPV type 16, HPV type 18, HPV type 16-18 association, HPV type 16-high risk (HR) association, HPV Type 18-HR association, and HPV HR [31,33,35,39,45, 51,52,56,58,59,66, and 68]). SurePath liquid-based cytology preparations were evaluated, and HPV tests were performed using real-time-polymerase chain reaction. Results: A total of 6.7% of cervical smear samples were positive for HPV DNA. The mean age of these cases was 41 years (range 15-78 years). All HPV types showed the highest rate of positivity in the 30-39 age groups. Regarding the distribution of HPV types, most of the cases were in the HPV HR group (66%). The most common atypia category detected in cytological examination was "Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance" (ASC-US) (27%). Conclusions: It was determined that the prevalence of HPV in the southeast of Turkey is lower than the world average, the most common HPV type in our region is HPV-HR, and HPV peaks at older ages compared to what has been reported for other regions of the world.

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study is the documentation of human papilloma virus (HPV) frequency and types seen in the city of Istanbul, Turkey, as well as evaluation of the relationship between these subtypes and cytological and pathological diagnoses. Methods: 4879 cases were studied in our molecular pathology department between 2001 and 2019 in Istanbul. Between 2001 and 2010, 1692 cases were screened for HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, and 33 by conventional hybridization and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Since 2011, up to 49 HPV typing has been performed for 3187 cases with chip array. The cases were referred to the pathology center and the hospital pathology department by clinicians for screening before HPV vaccination and on the observation of precancerous changes and koilocyts in cytological-histopathological evaluations. Results: In this study, the frequency of HPV was found to be 10.8% (527 HPV-positive cases). Among these, 348 cases were high-risk groups, whether or not they were previously associated with a low-risk group. When we look at the distribution of the cases according to the high-risk HPV types, HPV 16 is the most common type. The frequencies of occurrence of other HPV types are as following: HPV-16: 41.7%, HPV-31: 11.7%, HPV-52: 7.9%, HPV-51: 7.1%, HPV-33: 6.9%, HPV-45: 6.5%, HPV-18: 6.3%, HPV-39: 6.1%, and HPV-58: 5.8%. It was further found that multiple infections were 28% of high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion cases. HPV frequency was 38% and 72%, respectively, in cases with cytologically or histopathological precancerous, low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, and HSIL changes. As a final note, HPV was detected in 9 of 10 cases with cervical cancer (90%). Only 1 adenocarcinoma case detected in the series was a double infection with HPV types 18 and 45. Conclusion: HPV 16 was the most common type found in this study. It is followed by types 31, 52, 51, 33, 45, 18, 39, and 58, respectively. The most common association observed in double infections was between HPV 16 and 58. It was also observed that the incidence of HPV in the city of Istanbul, Turkey, was similar to other developed countries. As a final note, in addition to screening tests, PCR and chip array studies should be conducted and the community should be informed about preventive medicine and the importance of condom use.

Abstract:Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is common, causes considerable morbidity and probably contributes to mortality particularly through associated cardiovascular disease. The physical therapy of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is extremely effective in the majority of patients but most patients would prefer an alternative. Intuitively, OSA should be amenable to pharmacotherapy. The upper airway of affected individuals can be narrowed but is patent during wakefulness. Collapse of the airway during sleep occurs when negative intra-luminal pressure generated by inspiratory effort exceeds the tone of the upper airway dilators. This mismatch may be in part due to respiratory drive instability but the state-dependent fall in drive to the airway dilator muscles is the biggest factor in most patients. Various drugs have been investigated as treatment for OSA. Acetazolamide, theophylline, nicotine, opioid antagonists and medroxyprogesterone have been used to increase respiratory drive. Clonidine has been tested with the aim of reducing rapid eye movement sleep when OSA is often most severe. Various antidepressants have been used to suppress rapid eye movement sleep and to preferentially activate the upper airway dilators. The drug trials have often been of poor design and none has included more than a few patients. Most of the drugs have been found to be ineffective and those that have worked for some patients (acetazolamide and protriptyline) have produced intolerable adverse effects. There have been recent advances in the understanding of the neurotransmitters involved in the control of sleep and the upper airway motor neurones, offering the possibility of novel approaches to the drug treatment of OSA for those patients who cannot tolerate or do not benefit from CPAP. It seems likely that a better understanding of the mechanisms of OSA in individual patients and tailoring of drug therapy will be the way forward.

Abstract:Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection agent worldwide and, with high-risk (HR) HPV genotypes, is the main factor for development of cervical cancer. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of HPV and distribution of HR-HPV genotypes in cervical swab samples and compare them with demographic and clinical data. Methodology: Cervical swab samples of 2,285 women between the age of 17 and 76 were assessed between January 2018 and October 2020 in order to obtain the data of Turkey. Fifteen different HR-HPV genotypes were determined using multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction test. Results: HPV was positive in 36.3% (829/2,285) of DNA samples. Prevalence of multiple HR-HPV infection was 40.7%. Of the women, 30.9% (256/829) were infected with HPV16, 14.6% (121/829) with HPV39, and 14.2% (118/829) with HPV51. The most frequently detected genotypes with HPV16 were HPV31, HPV39 and HPV52, respectively. In women with cervical dysplasia, HPV16, 31, and 39 were the most common, and in women with genital warts, HPV16, 59 and 66 were most common, respectively. The highest HR-HPV prevalence was detected in the 17-34 age group (44.1%) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The prevalence of HR-HPV was 36.3% in this study. High prevalence (44.1%) especially in young women was consistent with findings in literature. The most common HR-HPV genotypes were HPV16, 39 and 51, respectively. Determining the prevalence and genotypes of HR-HPV playing role in the etiology of cervical cancer will be guiding for measures on prevention of cervical cancer and research on preventive vaccines.

Abstract:Objective: Planning vaccination and treatment options requires knowledge about the regional incidence of human papillomavirus infection (HPV) and its genotypes. The aim of our study was to determine the regional prevalence of HPV with genotypic subclassification and to evaluate the efficacy of HPV testing in cervical screening. Material and Method: This retrospective cohort study analyzed records of 10,152 women aged 30-65 from the On Dokuz Mayıs University Medical Faculty's Gynecology Clinic, excluding those with a history of cervical disease, hysterectomy, or current pregnancy. Pre- and postmenopausal and total HPV prevalence were calculated. There was a total of 544 patients who underwent a colposcopic biopsy after cervical screening. The research focused on comparing the efficacy of Pap smears, HPV tests, and co-tests in detecting LSIL or more severe conditions, utilizing the BD Viper LT System for HPV screening and liquid-based cytology for smear tests. Results: The prevalence of HPV in our region was determined to be 10.9%. When considering menopausal status, HPV prevalence was found to be 9.8% in premenopausal individuals and 12.4% in postmenopausal individuals. Evaluation of the pap smear results revealed a sensitivity of 74.8% for premenopausal and 81% for postmenopausal patients, with a specificity of 51% observed in both menopausal categories. In contrast, HPV testing demonstrated a sensitivity of 90.8% in premenopausal and 92.4% in postmenopausal individuals, with a specificity of 58% for both groups. The co-test results indicated an even higher sensitivity, with 97.9% in premenopausal and 100% in postmenopausal individuals, albeit with a reduced specificity of 28% in both cases. When identifying LSIL (low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions) and more severe conditions, the sensitivity and specificity of the primary HPV test surpassed those of the pap smear. While the primary HPV test's sensitivity is markedly lower compared to the co-test, it boasts a significantly higher specificity. Conclusion: Regional HPV prevalence studies are valuable for the implementation of screening policies. The primary HPV DNA test is a reliable method for detecting preinvasive and invasive lesions in patients over 30 years of age.
Human papillomavirus prevalence and type-distribution among women in Zhejiang Province, Southeast China: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the main etiological factor for cervical cancer and premalignant lesions of the cervix. The purposes of the present study were to determine the prevalence of type-specific HPV infections and the association of different HPV types with cervical dysplasia among women in Zhejiang province, Southeast China. Methods A total of 15,267 women presenting to a gynaecological outpatient clinic were enrolled in this study. Women were screened for HPV in addition to routine cervical cytology testing. Microarray hybridization and liquid-based cytology tests were used to detect HPV genotypes and cervical cytology, respectively. Results Based on the population attending a gynaecological outpatient clinic, overall prevalence of any 23 HPV type was 22.8% and multiple HPV infection was found in 4.0% of all the outpatients. HPV prevalence showed bimodal age distribution, with a peak (55.7%) at the ≤20 age group and a second one (35.5%) at >60 age group. In total samples, the five most frequent types were HPV 16 (4.4%), 58 (2.9%), 52 (2.7%), 33 (2.2%) and 11 (1.9%). Overall HPV prevalence increased with the severity of the cytologic result. Analysis through crude odds ratios (ORs) revealed that the cervical lesion risk of HPV-infected women increased to about 26-fold of uninfected women (OR 26.1, 95% CI 22.4 to 30.3). The five most risky HPV types associated with abnormal cytology were HPV 73, 16, 82, 45 and 51. Conclusions This study provided baseline data on HPV prevalence in women attending a gynecological outpatient clinic in Zhejiang province. Our data will supply guidance for the primary screening and vaccination program for cervical cancer in this area.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of human papillomavirus (HPV), HPV types, and the association with age, pregnancy, and childbirth in pregnant women. Method: Four hundred and forty-eight pregnant women who visited our clinic were enrolled in the study. Polymerase chain reaction was used to determine HPV DNA and typing by cervical smear in the initial applications of patients with detailed history. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 13.0 was used to analyze the data. Results: HPV DNA was positive in 26 (5.8%) of 448 patients who participated in the study. High-risk HPV types were detected in 77% of HPV-positive cases and low-risk HPV types in 23% of cases. Only one HPV type was detected in 13 patients (50%), while multiple HPV types were detected in 13 patients (50%) of the HPV-positive cases. A significant negative association was found between gravidity and positivity of HPV DNA. HPV is more common in women with lower parity and gravidity. Conclusion: Studies conducted in different populations in different regions of Turkey have shown that the incidence of HPV in women ranges from 2.2% to 26%. In our study, the incidence of HPV DNA in pregnant women was 5.8%. It was found that there was an inverse relationship between parity and HPV DNA positivity. The HPV DNA positivity decreased with the number of births.
Human Papilloma Virus-Related Oral Mucosal Lesions in Turkey: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Abstract:Introduction: The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the etiological agent of a variety of oral mucosal benign and pre/malignant lesions, which demonstrate a wide range of prevalence according to geographic regions. Material and methods: This study specifically examined the typing of HPV-associated oral mucosal lesions in Turkish patients. The DNA from FFPE blocks of 228 lesions was utilized for this purpose. A total of 87 oral mucosal lesions were classified as benign, 68 as premalignant, and 73 as malignant. DNA from these lesions was amplified using polymerase chain reaction, and genotypes were identified using restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP). Results: HPV-DNA was identified in 17 out of 228 patients, indicating a prevalence incidence of 7.4%. In benign oral lesions, the prevalence of HPV-DNA was 9.2% (8/87 cases), whereas in premalignant, oral epithelial dysplasia, and oral squamous cell carcinoma lesions, it was 6.9% (9/141 cases). A significant statistical difference was found between patients who tested positive for HPV and those who tested negative in terms of the location of the lesion and the age of the patients (p = 0.0097, p = 0.02, respectively). Conclusions: This study underscores the considerable prevalence of HPV infection in oral mucosal lesions among individuals in Central Anatolia, Turkey.
Performance of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) 16 and 18/45 Genotyping Combined with Age Stratification in the Triaging of Women with Histologic Low-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions Preceded by HPV Oncogenic Mrna-Positive/normal or Mildly Abnormal Cytology: A Longitudinal Study

Abstract:Objective: To assess the clinical performance of the human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 18/45 genotype assay (AHPV-GT) combined with age stratification in triaging women with histologic low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion/cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 1 (LSIL [CIN1]) preceded by HPV E6/E7 mRNA assay (Aptima HPV, AHPV) positive/normal or mildly abnormal cytology. Design: Longitudinal study. Setting: Gynaecological clinic in Huzhou Maternity & Child Health Care Hospital, China. Population: Women aged ≥21 years with histologic LSIL (CIN1) preceded by AHPV-positive/normal or mildly abnormal cytology. Methods: Women underwent AHPV-GT testing at baseline and were followed at 6-month intervals for up to 2 years. At each follow-up, women with abnormal cytology or AHPV positivity were referred for colposcopy and then biopsy if indicated. Main outcome measures: The 2-year cumulative incidence rates (CIRs) of CIN3+ stratified by baseline AHPV-GT genotyping. Results: Of 349 eligible women, 25 women (7.2%) progressed, 301 (86.2%) regressed, and 23 (6.6%) persisted during the follow-up. The 2-year CIRs of CIN3+ in AHPV-GT-positive women were both significantly higher than those in AHPV-GT-negative women overall (8.6% vs. 1.7%, P = 0.014) and in the ≥25-year-old group (10.9% vs. 1.5%, P = 0.002) but slightly higher in the 21–24-year-old group ( P > 0.05). Conclusions: AHPV-GT testing with age stratification is effective for triaging women with histologic LSIL (CIN1) preceded by AHPV-positive/normal or mildly abnormal cytology. Immediate treatment is a rational recommendation for women ≥ 25 years old with histologic LSIL (CIN1) preceded by AHPV-GT positivity when good surveillance is not assured.

Abstract:Background and objective Vigorous proactive measures are needed to combat cervical cancer, linked to the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV genotyping aids in identifying high-risk strains, enabling targeted screening and risk assessment. This informs treatment decisions, reducing cervical cancer cases. In light of this, we conducted a retrospective analysis of Pap cytology and HPV genotypes to assess western Romania's new screening program. Understanding HPV prevalence, genotype correlations, and risk factors will help refine risk stratification models and enhance public health strategies. Methodology This retrospective study analyzed Pap smears from 195 patients with a mean age of 40 years [standard deviation (SD): 12 years], with a peak of incidence between 25 and 30 years. The patient cohort, with equal representation from urban and rural areas, comprised sexually active women of reproductive age presenting to the Gynaecology Ambulatory of the Municipal Emergency Clinical Hospital Timișoara over two years. Patients not sexually active and those in menopause were excluded. HPV genotyping was done on 67 patients. Data were analyzed using JASP, employing descriptive statistics, frequency tables, contingency tables, chi-squared test, odds ratio, and Fisher's exact test. Results Among 195 patients undergoing Pap smear tests, the most prevalent finding was negative (77.95%), indicating no abnormal cells detected. A smaller proportion of patients exhibited low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL, 11.28%) or atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US, 8.72%) findings. High-grade lesions (HSIL, ASC-H) were rare. For cytology grading, Category II (CII) was the most prevalent (75.90%), followed by Category III (CIII, 24.10%). HPV genotyping was performed on a subset of patients (n=67). Among them, Type 16 was the most frequent (28.36%), followed by Other high-risk types (20.89%), Type 16 (28.35%), and Type 18 (13.43%). HPV testing was not performed for 65.64% of the patients. Overall, the study suggests that a significant majority of the patients had normal Pap smears. However, a small proportion did have abnormal findings, including HPV infection. These findings highlight the importance of Pap smear screening for early detection of cervical abnormalities. Conclusions Our study from western Romania highlights the importance of HPV testing and Pap cytology in cervical cancer prevention. HPV testing is a potent tool for identifying high-risk women, and when combined with Pap cytology, it provides a more comprehensive screening strategy. Our research also revealed a diverse HPV genotype distribution, suggesting the need for broader-spectrum vaccines like the nonavalent vaccine. Despite our study's limitations, our findings underscore the need for including HPV testing in national screening guidelines. Future research should focus on larger studies and the cost-effectiveness of broader-spectrum vaccines. Implementing policies based on these findings could lead to more effective cervical cancer prevention in western Romania.
Prevalence of Candida albicans in High-Risk Human Papillomavirus-Positive Women: A Study in Diyarbakır Province, Turkey

Abstract:The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a significant public health concern due to its association with the development of cervical cancer. Although inflammation caused by Candida spp. has been shown to facilitate oncogenesis, the interactions between HPV and Candida spp. remain unclear. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and genotype distribution of HR-HPV infection HR-HPV-positiveCandida albicans in HR-HPV-positive individuals in Diyarbakır province in Turkey. Cervical samples were taken from 350 participants aged 20–69 years who applied to Diyarbakır Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital, Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic. For detection of HPV presence and HR-HPV genotyping, PCR/direct cycle sequencing was used. E6/E7 mRNA expression of HPV-16, -18, -31, -33, and -45 was determined by type-specific real-time NASBA assay (NucliSENS EasyQ(®)HPV v1.1). The presence of Candida albicans in cervical specimens of HR-HPV-positive women was investigated by RAPD-PCR and culture methods. Results. Of the 350 women who participated in the study, 24% were HPV positive and 10.5% were found to be HR-HPV positive. HR-HPV positivity was most frequently detected in the age range of 40–49 years. Among HR-HPV-positive women, C. albicans was found in 59.4%. Conclusion. The most frequent HR-HPV genotype was HPV16, followed by HPV31. Of women who tested positive for HR-HPV, C. albicans was discovered in 59.4%. C. albicans infection may occur when the immune system is weakened or the balance of the vaginal flora is disturbed, increasing tissue damage in the vaginal area and the risk of carcinogenesis of HR-HPV. Therefore, knowing the presence of Candida infection in HR-HPV-positive women is essential to plan the treatment and prevent the risk of secondary disease.

Association of human papillomavirus genotype distribution and cervical cytology: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:The present study attempted to analyse human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype distribution and its association with cervical cytology results in women in western China. The present retrospective analysis was performed in 1089 female outpatients with a positive HPV test result who had undergone a cervical cytology test at the gynaecological clinic, West China Second Hospital, Sichuan University, China, between January 2014 and December 2016. Of the 1089 patients with HPV infection, multiple HPV genotypes were detected in 220 patients (20.20%). Among the 1368 HPV genotypes detected, 1145 (83.70%) were high-risk subtypes. The most common genotypes were HPV-52 (18.64%), HPV-16 (16.59%), HPV-58 (13.23%), HPV-18 (6.80%), HPV-56 (5.56%) and HPV-59 (5.56%). Cervical cytology revealed abnormal cells in 430 (39.49%) patients. The most common diagnoses were atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US; 236 cases, 54.88%), low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL; 151 cases, 35.12%), high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL; 63 cases, 14.65%) and atypical glandular cells (AGC; 21 cases, 4.88%). HPV-66 was significantly associated (P = 0.037) with ASC; HPV-52 and HPV-56 were significantly associated with LSIL (P = 0.009 and 0.026, respectively); HPV-16 (P < 0.001), HPV-33 (P = 0.014) and HPV-58 (P = 0.003) were significantly associated with HSIL; and HPV-16 (P = 0.005) was significantly associated with AGC. HPV-16, HPV-52 and HPV-58 are associated with different diagnoses in patients with positive cervical cytological findings.

Abstract:Background: Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women of child-bearing age in Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to determine human papilloma virus (HPV) genotype distribution among HIV-negative women with normal and abnormal cervical cytology results. Methods: We investigated a consecutive of 233 HIV-negative women between December 2008 and March 2009 presenting in a Tertiary Gynecology Referral Clinic in Ethiopia. Screening was done by Pap cytology and HPV detection and genotyping method was nested PCR (direct amplification with MY09/MY11 primers, followed by nested amplification with GP5/GP6 primers) and sequencing of the nested products. Sequencing of the non-purified nested PCR products was performed following re-amplification with Big dye terminator, using the GP6 primer. Results: Of the 233 study participants, 92 (39.5%) had abnormal cytology. All women with abnormal cervical cytology had positive HPV DNA compared to only 48.9% of those presenting with normal cytology. Of these women, the frequency of high-risk (HR)-HPV was 83.2% and its prevalence in women with abnormal cervical cytology was significantly higher than those with normal cytology (92.4% vs. 71%, p < 0.0001). The most frequent genotypes identified were HPV16 (44.1%), followed by HPV35 and HPV45 (each 6.2%), HPV31 (4.4%), HPV56 (3.7%), HPV18 and HPV59 (each 3.1%), HPV58 (2.5%) and HPV39 (1.9%). While the most common HR-HPV infections among women with normal cytology were HPV16 (20.3%), followed by HPV35 (8.7%), HPV56 and HPV58 (each 5.8%), HPV18, HPV31 and HPV39 (each 4.4%), HPV45 (2.9%) and HPV59 and HPV68 (each 1.5%), the most common HR-HPV infections in women with abnormal cytology included HPV16 (62%), followed by HPV45 (8.7%), HPV 31, HPV35 and HPV59 (each 4.4%), and HPV18, HPV52 and HPV56 (each 2.2%). We also noted low prevalence of multiple HPV infections in women with normal or abnormal cytology. Multivariable logistic analysis showed that residing in rural area (OR 3.24, 95% CI: 1.13-9.30), being multipara (OR 7.35, 95% CI: 1.78-30.38) and having abnormal cervical cytology results (OR 6.75, 95% CI: 1.78-25.57) were all independently associated with HPV16 genotype. Conclusions: Our study revealed a significant risk of infection with HR-HPV, in particular with HPV16 genotype, in women attending a referral center in Ethiopian women presenting with or without abnormal cervical cytology. Moreover, Pap smear cytology missed a significant proportion of women compared to those who were identified by PCR for HR-HPV infections. In addition, the PCR method we used was not suitable for sensitive detection of co-existent multiple infections. Data from the present study indicate that currently available HPV vaccines could prevent nearly 67% of all cervical cancer cases in women in Ethiopia.
Health beliefs and associated factors related to HPV and HPV vaccination in a sample of Turkish women: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:This study was conducted to determine women's health beliefs about HPV and HPV vaccination and factors associated with health beliefs. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 300 women aged 21-64 in Turkey. Data were collected using the human papillomavirus (HPV) knowledge scale (HPV-KS) and the health belief model scale for human papillomavirus and its vaccination (HBMS-HPVV). The mean age of the women who participated in the study was 35.16 ± 9.52 years. Of them, 72.3% heard of the HPV test, 30.3% had an HPV test, 62% heard of HPV vaccination, and 9.7% had HPV vaccination. Educational level, hearing about the HPV vaccine, and HPV knowledge level were significant predictors of perceived benefit (p < .001). HPV knowledge level significantly predicted perceived susceptibility (p < .001). HPV knowledge level and hearing about HPV tests and vaccines were significant predictors of perceived severity (p < .001). A high level of education, a high level of HPV knowledge, and hearing about HPV tests and the HPV vaccine positively affect women's health beliefs. Health belief model-based education programs should be used to improve women's HPV knowledge and health beliefs about HPV and the HPV vaccine. In addition to women's health beliefs, cervical cancers can only be prevented by including the HPV vaccine in national immunization programs and increasing the coverage of HPV screening tests.

Abstract:High-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection is a major cause of infection-related cancer worldwide. 3101 HR-HPV-positive females were retrospectively analyzed and grouped using the cervical cytological screening (ThinPrep cytological test, TCT) evaluations combined with colposcopy. The HPV16 infection rate is the highest in all groups. HPV16 was the most frequent in each group, with significant differences between the four groups (χ 2 = 23.41, P = 0.0001). The distribution of HPV16 and HPV33 correlated with the pathologic stage in each group. The mixed infection rate of mRNA testing differs significantly between groups ( P < 0.01, χ 2 = 17.44, P = 0.002). HR-HPV infection duration of less than six months accounted for 87.65%, 6 and 12 months of persistent infection (28.28%), and more than one year of continuous infection accounted for only 16.48%. The top three HPV types in a group with a duration of more than 12 months were HPV52 (3.03%), HPV16 (2.55%), and HPV39 (1.58%). The least clearance types were HPV39 (63.48%), 56 (69.54%), and 52 (71.44%) more than 12 months. This study revealed the region's primary pathogenic subtypes on different cervical lesions and provided the basis for diagnosing and treating HPV infection.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Background</h3><p class="Para">Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the main cause of precancerous lesions and cervical cancer in women. In order to determine the epidemiological characteristics as well as the relationship between the HPV genotype and cytology test results among women in Beijing, China, we retrospectively collected and analyzed the data from a tertiary hospital in Beijing, China.</p><h3 class="Heading">Methods</h3><p class="Para">A total of 21,239 women visited the China–Japan Friendship Hospital between 2014 and 2018 and their cervical exfoliations were collected. Thirteen HPV subtypes (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59 and 68) were examined and ThinPrep cytological test (TCT) was performed.</p><h3 class="Heading">Results</h3><p class="Para">Among all cases, 4473 (21.06%) women were infected with HPV. HPV52 (4.64%), HPV16 (4.44%) and HPV58 (4.28%) had higher prevalence. Single-type infection (77.26%) was more common than multiple-type infection (22.74%). Single-type infection was more frequently seen in women aged 50–60 years (17.17%), and multiple-type infection was more common in those aged < 30 years (7.88%). Significant differences in secular trends from 2014 to 2018 were observed for subtypes HPV39, 51, 52 and 58. HPV positive rates of women aged < 30 and 30–40 years changed significantly along with the time period, and the TCT positive rates of women aged 30–40, 40–50, 50–60 and > 60 years also showed significant differences from 2014 to 2018. In addition, 1746 (8.22%) women were TCT positive, of whom, 858 (4.04%), 561 (2.64%) and 327 (1.54%) had atypical squamous cells (ASCs), low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSILs) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs), respectively. Among four types of cytological lesions, the HPV infection rates were 16.76, 66.08, 63.99 and 85.32% in those negative for intraepithelial lesions or malignancy (NILM), ASC, LSIL and HSIL, respectively.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3><p class="Para">HPV52, 16 and 58 are the most common infection subtypes in this study and among four types of cytological lesions, HSILs has the highest HPV prevalence. Significant differences in secular trends are observed for different subtypes in recent 5 years. The results on HPV genotype-specific prevalence should be considered when the HPV vaccine program is implemented in Beijing area.</p>
