Abstract:In a biophysical approach to the study of swimming performance (blending biomechanics and bioenergetics), inter-limb coordination is typically considered and analysed to improve propulsion and propelling efficiency. In this approach, ‘opposition’ or ‘continuous’ patterns of inter-limb coordination, where continuity between propulsive actions occurs, are promoted in the acquisition of expertise. Indeed a ‘continuous’ pattern theoretically minimizes intra-cyclic speed variations of the centre of mass. Consequently, it may also minimize the energy cost of locomotion. However, in skilled swimming performance there is a need to strike a delicate balance between inter-limb coordination pattern stability and variability, suggesting the absence of an ‘ideal’ pattern of coordination toward which all swimmers must converge or seek to imitate. Instead, an ecological dynamics framework advocates that there is an intertwined relationship between the specific intentions, perceptions and actions of individual swimmers, which constrains this relationship between coordination pattern stability and variability. This perspective explains how behaviours emerge from a set of interacting constraints, which each swimmer has to satisfy in order to achieve specific task performance goals and produce particular task outcomes. This overview updates understanding on inter-limb coordination in swimming to analyse the relationship between coordination variability and stability in relation to interacting constraints (related to task, environment and organism) that swimmers may encounter during training and performance.

Bilateral inter-arm coordination in freestyle swimming: effect of skill level and swimming speed

Abstract:The aim of this study was to examine the influence of level of skill and swimming speed on inter-limb coordination of freestyle swimming movements. Five elite (2 males, 3 females; age 18.9+/-1.0 years, height 1.71+/-0.04 m, body mass 62.1+/-7.0 kg) and seven novice (age 22.0+/-2.0 years, height 1.77+/-0.04 m, body mass 74.8+/-9.0 kg) swimmers swam a sprint and a self-paced 25 m freestyle trial. The swimming trials were recorded by four digital cameras operating at 50 Hz. The digitized frames underwent a three-dimensional direct linear transformation to yield the three-dimensional endpoint kinematic trajectories. The spatio-temporal relationship between the upper limbs was quantified by means of the peak amplitude and time lag of the cross-correlation function between the right and left arm's endpoint trajectories. A strong anti-phase coupling between the two arms, as confirmed by peak amplitudes greater than 0.8, was noted for both groups and swimming speeds. Significantly higher (P<0.05) peak amplitudes were observed for the sprint compared with self-paced swimming. No significant differences in the strength of inter-limb coupling were noted between the elite and novice swimmers (P>0.05). Time lags were very close to 0 ms and did not differ between groups or swimming speeds. We conclude that in freestyle swimming, the intrinsic anti-phase (180 degrees phase difference) inter-limb relationship is strongly preserved despite the physically powerful environmental influence of the water and this "preferred" pattern is not affected by level of skill. In contrast, increasing movement speed results in stronger inter-limb coupling that is closer to the anti-phase inter-limb relationship.

Abstract:The skill to swim fast results from the interplay between generating high thrust while minimizing drag. In front crawl, swimmers achieve this goal by adapting their inter-arm coordination according to the race pace. A transition has been observed from a catch-up pattern of coordination (i.e. lag time between the propulsion of the two arms) to a superposition pattern of coordination as the velocity increases. Expert swimmers choose a catch-up coordination pattern at low velocities with a constant relative lag time of glide during the cycle and switch to a maximum propulsion force strategy at higher velocities. This transition is explained using a burst-and-coast model. At low velocities, the choice of coordination can be understood through two parameters: the time of propulsion and the gliding effectiveness. These parameters can characterize a swimmer and help to optimize their technique.

Abstract:The present study aimed to examine how high- and low-speed swimmers organise biomechanical, energetic and coordinative factors throughout extreme intensity swim. Sixteen swimmers (eight high- and eight low-speed) performed, in free condition, 100-m front crawl at maximal intensity and 25, 50 and 75-m bouts (at same pace as the previous 100-m), and 100-m maximal front crawl on the measuring active drag system (MAD-system). A 3D dual-media optoelectronic system was used to assess speed, stroke frequency, stroke length, propelling efficiency and index of coordination (IdC), with power assessed by MAD-system and energy cost by quantifying oxygen consumption plus blood lactate. Both groups presented a similar profile in speed, power output, stroke frequency, stroke length, propelling efficiency and energy cost along the effort, while a distinct coordination profile was observed (F(3, 42) = 3.59, P = 0.04). Speed, power, stroke frequency and propelling efficiency (not significant, only a tendency) were higher in high-speed swimmers, while stroke length and energy cost were similar between groups. Performing at extreme intensity led better level swimmers to achieve superior speed due to higher power and propelling efficiency, with consequent ability to swim at higher stroke frequencies. This imposes specific constraints, resulting in a distinct IdC magnitude and profile between groups.

Abstract:The development of codes and power calculations currently allows the simulation of increasingly complex flows, especially in the turbulent regime. Swimming research should benefit from these technological advances to try to better understand the dynamic mechanisms involved in swimming. An unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) study is conducted in crawl, in order to analyse the propulsive forces generated by the hand and forearm. The k-ω SST turbulence model and an overset grid method have been used. The main objectives are to analyse the evolution of the hand-forearm propulsive forces and to explain this relative to the arm kinematics parameters. In order to validate our simulation model, the calculated forces and pressures were compared with several other experimental and numerical studies. A good agreement is found between our results and those of other studies. The hand is the segment that generates the most propulsive forces during the aquatic stroke. As the pressure component is the main source of force, the orientation of the hand-forearm in the absolute coordinate system is an important kinematic parameter in the swimming performance. The propulsive forces are biggest when the angles of attack are high. CFD appears as a very valuable tool to better analyze the mechanisms of swimming performance and offers some promising developments, especially for optimizing the performance from a parametric study.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate effect of flow speeds on the upper limb muscular activity of butterfly swimmers training in a flow environment. A comparison of kinematic characteristics and muscular activity of upper limbs were made when the swimmers training with different flow speeds in a swimming flume. The purpose was to provide a basis for scientifically formulating special swimming training advice for athletes' training in flow environment. Methods: Ten youth female butterfly swimmers participated in the study with the speed of 70%, 80%, and 90% level of their max speeds. A stroke cycle was divided into four phases (entry, pull, push, and recovery). The kinematic parameters of upper limbs (stroke rate, stroke length, duration of each phase in a stroke cycle) and muscular activity (onset timing, integrated electromyography (iEMG), contribution ratio) of four muscles (Biceps brachii (BB), Triceps brachii (TB), Pectoralis major (PM), and Latissimus dorsi (LD)) were collected and analyzed in different stroke phases. Results: There was no significant difference between stroke rate and stroke length with different flow speeds. There were significant differences among the duration of the four stroke phases. The entry phase had the longest duration, the pull phase had the shortest duration, the push phase was longer than the recovery phase, and the recovery phase was shorter than the entry phase. The BB and PM were activated significantly earlier at 90% of target speed than at 80% of target speed, while the TB was activated significantly later than other two speeds. The muscular contribution ratio of the PM was highest in the pull phase and lowest in the pushing phase. The muscular contribution ratio of the BB was significantly lower in the pushing phase than in other three stroke phases. The muscular contribution of the TB was significantly higher in the recovery phase than in other three stroke phases. The muscular contribution ratio of the LD was highest in the pushing phase, and it was significantly higher in pushing phase and recovery phase than in pull phase. Conclusions: (1) When butterfly athletes training with 70%, 80% and 90% of their max speed in a flow environment, it didn't make significant differences between the kinematic or muscle activation characteristics of the upper limbs movement except the muscle onset timing. (2) Stroke phase was the main factor of the duration and the muscle contribution ratio during butterfly arm stroke for young athletes.

Abstract:The role of passive body dynamics on the kinematics of swimming micro-organisms in complex fluids is investigated. Asymptotic analysis of small-amplitude motions of a finite-length undulatory swimmer in a Stokes–Oldroyd-B fluid is used to predict shape changes that result as body elasticity and fluid elasticity are varied. Results from the analysis are compared with numerical simulations and the numerically simulated shape changes agree with the analysis at both small and large amplitudes, even for strongly elastic flows. We compute a stroke-induced swimming speed that accounts for the shape changes, but not additional effects of fluid elasticity. Elasticity-induced shape changes lead to larger-amplitude strokes for sufficiently soft swimmers in a viscoelastic fluid, and these stroke boosts can lead to swimming speed-ups. However, for the strokes we examine, we find that additional effects of fluid elasticity generically result in a slow-down. Our high amplitude strokes in strongly elastic flows lead to a qualitatively different regime in which highly concentrated elastic stresses accumulate near swimmer bodies and dramatic slow-downs are seen.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to review the literature on front crawl swimming biomechanics, focusing on propulsive and resistive forces at different swimming velocities. Recent studies show that the resistive force increases in proportion to the cube of the velocity, which implies that a proficient technique to miminise the resistive (and maximise the propulsive) force is particularly important in sprinters. To increase the velocity in races, swimmers increase their stroke frequency. However, experimental and simulation studies have revealed that there is a maximum frequency beyond which swimmers cannot further increase swimming velocity due to a change in the angle of attack of the hand that reduces its propulsive force. While the results of experimental and simulation studies are consistent regarding the effect of the arm actions on propulsion, the findings of investigations into the effect of the kicking motion are conflicting. Some studies have indicated a positive effect of kicking on propulsion at high swimming velocities while the others have yielded the opposite result. Abstract:This study aims to profile biomechanical abilities during sprint front crawl by identifying technical stroke characteristics, in light of performance level. Ninety-one recreational to world-class swimmers equipped with a sacrum-worn IMU performed 25 m all-out. Intra and inter-cyclic 3D kinematical variabilities were clustered using a functional double partition model. Clusters were analysed according to (1) swimming technique using continuous visualisation and discrete features (standard deviation and jerk cost) and (2) performance regarding speed and competition calibre using respectively one-way ANOVA and Chi-squared test as well as Gamma statistics. Swimmers displayed specific technical profiles of intra-cyclic ( smoothy and jerky ) and inter-cyclic stroke regulation ( low, moderate and high repeatability ) significantly discriminated by speed ( p < 0.001, η 2 = 0.62) and performance calibre ( p < 0.001, V = 0.53). We showed that combining high levels of both kinds of variability ( jerky + low repeatability ) are associated with highest speed (1.86 ± 0.12 m/s) and competition calibre (γ = 0.75, p < 0.001). It highlights the crucial importance of variabilities combination. Technical skills might be driven by a specific alignment of stroke pattern and its associated dispersion according to the task constraints. This data-driven approach can assist eyes-based technical evaluation. Targeting the development of an explosive swimming style with a high level of body stability should be considered during training of sprinters.

Differences in spatial-temporal parameters and arm-leg coordination in butterfly stroke as a function of race pace, skill and gender

Abstract:Spatial-temporal parameters (velocity, stroke rate, stroke length) and arm-leg coordination in the butterfly stroke were studied as a function of race pace, skill (due to technical level, age, and experience) and gender. Forty swimmers (ten elite men, ten elite women, ten less-skilled men, and ten less-skilled women) performed the butterfly stroke at four velocities corresponding to the appropriate paces for the 400-m, 200-m, 100-m, and 50-m, respectively. Arm and leg stroke phases were identified by video analysis and used to calculate four time gaps (T1: the time difference between the start of the arms' catch phase and the start of the legs' downward phase of the first leg kick; T2: the time difference between the start of the arms' pull phase and the start of the legs' upward phase of the first leg kick; T3: the time difference between the start of the arms' push phase and the start of the legs' downward phase of the second leg kick; and T4: the time difference between the start of the arms' recovery and the start of the legs' upward phase of the second leg kick) and the total time gap (TTG), i.e., the sum of the four discrete time gaps. These values described the changing coupling of arm to leg actions over an entire stroke cycle. A significant race pace effect indicated that the synchronization between the key motor points of the arms and legs, which determine the starts and ends of the arm and leg stroke phases, increased with pace for all participants. A significant skill effect indicated that the elite swimmers had greater velocity, stroke length, and stroke rate and stronger synchronization of the arm and leg stroke phases than the less-skilled swimmers, due to smaller T2 and T3 and greater T1. A significant gender effect revealed greater velocity and stroke length for the men, and smaller T1 for the less-skilled women. These time gap differences between skill levels were related to the capacity of elite swimmers to assume a more streamlined position of trunk, head and upper limbs during leg actions, adopt a shorter glide and higher stroke rate to overcome great forward resistance, and generate higher forces and use better technique during the arm pull. Thus, coaches are advised to begin monitoring arm-leg coordination earlier in swimmers' careers to ensure that they attain their highest possible skill levels.

Abstract:The connections between swimming technique and the fluid dynamical interactions they generate are important for assisting performance improvement. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling provides a controlled and unobtrusive way for understanding the fundamentals of swimming. A coupled biomechanical-smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) fluid model is used to analyze the thrust and drag generation of a freestyle swimmer. The swimmer model was generated using a three-dimensional laser body scan of the athlete and digitization of multi-angle video footage. Two large distinct peaks in net streamwise thrust are found during the stroke, which coincide with the underwater arm strokes. The hand motions generate vortical structures that travel along the body toward the kicking legs and the hands are shown to produce thrust using both lift and drag. These findings advance understanding of the freestyle stroke and may be used to improve athlete technique.

Abstract:Tumour-associated alterations of cell surface glycosylation play a crucial role in the adhesion and metastasis of cancer cells. It is well known that the metastatic potential is associated with increased GlcNAc &bgr;1–6 branching in N-glycans of tumour cells specifically recognized by a lectin from Phaseolus vulgaris leukoagglutinin (PHA-L). We identified proteins bearing GlcNAc &bgr;1–6 branched N-glycans in the A375 human melanoma cell line by affinity chromatography separation on a PHA-L agarose column, followed by immunoidentification and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) analysis. Amongst the proteins identified were integrin subunits &agr;2, &agr;3, &agr;5 and &bgr;1, as well as N-cadherin and lysosome-associated membrane proteins (LAMP-1 and LAMP-2). In addition, L1, Mac-2 binding protein (Mac-2-BP), activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule/CD166 (ALCAM) and melanotransferrin were shown to react with PHA-L. Some of these proteins are connected mainly with nervous tissues or the immune system and play a crucial role in cell adhesion processes. The presence of GlcNAc &bgr;1–6 branched oligosaccharides in these proteins may influence their adhesion properties, reducing adhesion of the cells to the extracellular matrix (ECM) and thus facilitating tumour cell invasion.

Abstract:Evaluating force–velocity characteristics on dry-land is of the utmost importance in swimming, because higher levels of these bio-motor abilities positively affect in-water performance. However, the wide range of possible technical specializations presents an opportunity for a more categorized approach that has yet to be seized. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify feasible differences in maximum force–velocity exertion based on swimmers’ stroke and distance specialization. To this scope, 96 young male swimmers competing at the regional level were divided into 12 groups, one for each stroke (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and front crawl) and distance (50 m, 100 m, and 200 m). They performed two single pull-up tests, 5-min before and after competing in a federal swimming race. We assessed force (N) and velocity (m/s) exertion via linear encoder. There were no significant differences between pre-post maximum force–velocity exertions, despite the decreasing trend. Force-parameters highly correlated with each other and with the swimming performance time. Moreover, both force (t = −3.60, p < 0.001) and velocity (t = −3.90, p < 0.001) were significant predictors of swimming race time. Sprinters (both 50 m and 100 m) of all strokes could exert significantly higher force–velocity compared to 200 m swimmers (e.g., 0.96 ± 0.06 m/s performed by sprinters vs. 0.66 ± 0.03 m/s performed by 200 m swimmers). Moreover, breaststroke sprinters presented significantly lower force–velocity compared to sprinters specialized in the other strokes (e.g., 1047.83 ± 61.33 N performed by breaststroke sprinters vs. 1263.62 ± 161.23 N performed by butterfly sprinters). This study could provide the foundation for future research regarding the role of stroke and distance specializations in modeling swimmers’ force–velocity abilities, thus influencing paramount elements for specific training and improvement towards competitions.

Abstract:99 adult specialists in combat sports ( n = 21), team sports ( n = 37), gymnastics ( n = 22), and swimming ( n = 19) ( M age = 20 yr., SD = 2; 64 young men, 35 young women) performed three 25-m swimming tasks whilst “blindfolded” by opaque goggles: front crawl in a straight line, dolphin-kicking on the back, and dolphin-kicking on the front. Even though the gymnasts (like the swimmers) were at ease in all 3 situations, the motor skills of the “motor interaction” specialists (team sports, combat sports) put the latter at a disadvantage. The similarities between the gymnasts' and swimmers' behavior (confirmed using factorial correspondence analysis with the TRI-DEUX program) are undoubtedly related to the fact that these sportspersons essentially live in the same sensory space in their respective practices: exteroceptive information is subordinated by proprioceptive information. In contrast, the 99 subjects' timed freestyle swimming performances over 75 m depended so much on their physical and anthropometric qualities that the results were independent of the sporting specialties for the novice swimmers. Hence, the mere fact that the 22 gymnasts, who tended to be shorter, with a higher proportion of women, were more at ease in the water did not turn them into great performers.

Abstract:The aim was to compare the anthropometrics, biomechanics and energetics in young swimmers of different competitive levels. Seventy-five boys aged between 11 and 13 years-old with a broad range of performances were ranked based on their personal best time in the men's 100m freestyle event and then split-up into three tiers (Tier-1, i.e., top-tier, best performers; Tier-2, mid-tier; Tier-3, lower-tier). A set of anthropometric features was measured (height, body mass, arm span and trunk transverse surface area). Stroke kinematics (speed, stroke length, stroke frequency) was assessed by a Speedo-meter. Swim efficiency was then estimated (stroke index, speed fluctuation, Froude efficiency). Hydrodynamics assessment encompassed the estimation of active drag and drag coefficient by velocity perturbation method and a set of dimensionless numbers (Froude, hull speed, Reynolds). Mechanical power (to overcome drag, transfer of kinetic energy to water, external power) and power input were derived. There was a significant variation with moderate effect sizes in all anthropometric features but the trunk transverse surface area. Tier-1 swimmers were taller, heavier and with longer limbs than remaining counterparts. There were also significant variations in the stroke kinematics with moderate-large effect sizes. Tier-1 swimmers showed higher stroke frequency, stroke length, speed, stroke index and propelling efficiency but lower speed fluctuations. Reynold number, Froude number and hull speed were significantly higher in Tier-1 swimmers, denoting large effect sizes. The mechanical power and power input delivered were significantly higher in tier-1 swimmers, showing moderate effect sizes. As a conclusion, it was noted significant variations, with moderate-large effect sizes, among the three tiers, for the vast majority of the selected variables. The better performances by tier-1 swimmers were related to their anthropometrics, biomechanics and energetics.

Stroke frequency in front crawl: its mechanical link to the fluid forces required in non-propulsive directions

Abstract:Two hypotheses were tested: (a) stroke frequency is predictable from the amplitudes of bodyroll and the turning effect around the body's long-axis generated by the non-propulsive fluid forces (that is, the torque driving bodyroll), and (b) swimmers exhibit at least one alteration in the factors influencing the bodyroll cycle as they increase the stroke frequency for faster swimming, so that they can reduce the fluid forces "wasted" in non-propulsive directions. The mechanical formula that links stroke frequency and the kinetics of bodyroll was derived on the basis of Euler's equation of motion. Experimental data were collected from competitive swimmers to validate the derived mechanical relations and to examine the strategy that skilled swimmers would use to change the stroke frequency as they swam faster. A strong correlation (slow: r = 0.70 and fast: r = 0.85) and a non-significant difference between the observed stroke frequency and the formula-based estimates supported the first hypothesis. As the subjects increased stroke frequency (38%) for faster swimming, bodyroll decreased (19%) and the trunk twist increased (40%). The combined alterations resulted in a small reduction in the shoulder roll (12%), enabling the swimmers to gain the benefits associated with a large rolling action of the upper trunk, while limiting the amount of increase in the turning effect of fluid forces in non-propulsive directions (40%). The second hypothesis was, therefore, supported. The derived mechanical formula provides a theoretical basis to explore mechanisms underlying the interrelations among stroke frequency, stroke length and swimming speed, and sheds light on a possible reason that swimmers generally adopt six-beat kicks.
Density dependent hadron field theory for hypernuclei

Abstract:The Density Dependent Relativistic Hadron Field (DDRH) theory, previously introduced and applied to isospin nuclei, is extended to hypernuclei by including the octet hyperons. Infinite matter Dirac-Brueckner theory for octet baryons and the derivation of in-medium DDRH baryon-meson vertices is discussed. From the properties of Dirac-Brueckner interactions it is found that hyperon and nucleon self-energies and vertices are related by the ratios of free space coupling constants. This leads to simple scaling laws for the in-medium hyperon and nucleon vertices. The model is applied in relativistic DDRH mean-field calculations to singl$\Lambda nuclei. Free space N-Lambda T-matrix results are used for the scalar vertex. As the only free parameter the hyperon vector vertex scaling factor is adjusted to a selected set of hypernuclear data. Spectroscopic data of single Lambda hypernuclei over the full mass range are well described. The reduced Lambda spin-orbit splitting is reproduced and found to be related closely the medium dependence of scalar and vector interactions.

Abstract:Gene therapy of human cancer using genetically engineered lymphocytes is dependent on the identification of highly reactive T-cell receptors (TCRs) with antitumor activity. We immunized transgenic mice and also conducted high-throughput screening of human lymphocytes to generate TCRs highly reactive to melanoma/melanocyte antigens. Genes encoding these TCRs were engineered into retroviral vectors and used to transduce autologous peripheral lymphocytes administered to 36 patients with metastatic melanoma. Transduced patient lymphocytes were CD45RA(-) and CD45RO(+) after ex vivo expansion. After infusion, the persisting cells displayed a CD45RA(+) and CD45RO(-) phenotype. Gene-engineered cells persisted at high levels in the blood of all patients 1 month after treatment, responding patients with higher ex vivo antitumor reactivity than nonresponders. Objective cancer regressions were seen in 30% and 19% of patients who received the human or mouse TCR, respectively. However, patients exhibited destruction of normal melanocytes in the skin, eye, and ear, and sometimes required local steroid administration to treat uveitis and hearing loss. Thus, T cells expressing highly reactive TCRs mediate cancer regression in humans and target rare cognate-antigen-containing cells throughout the body, a finding with important implications for the gene therapy of cancer. Lower and upper extremity contributions to propulsion and resistance during semi-tethered load-velocity profiling in front crawl swimming

Abstract:The study estimated lower and upper extremity contributions to whole-body front crawl swimming using semi-tethered load-velocity profiling. Nine female and 11 male (inter)national-level swimmers performed 20 m semi-tethered sprints, each with five progressive loads for lower (leg kicking), upper (arm stroke), and whole-body front crawl movements. The theoretical maximal speed (v 0 ) and load (L 0 ), and active drag (D a ) were expressed as a percentage of the sum of both extremities for the movements of each extremity to calculate their contributions. The difference of whole-body values minus the sum of both extremities was used to estimate whole-body reserves. Lower (upper) body contributions were 43.8 ± 2.8% (56.2%) for v 0 , 37.3 ± 7.1% (62.7%) for L 0 , and 39.6 ± 5.6% (60.4%) for D a . Statistically significant whole-body reserves were found for v 0 (−30.9 ± 3.9%, p < 0.001) and D a (−5.7 ± 11.7%, p = 0.04). V 0 reserves correlated very highly with whole-body v 0 in males ( r = 0.71, p = 0.014) and moderately in females ( r = 0.47, p = 0.21). The lower extremities contribute substantially to front crawl load-velocity profiles of highly trained swimmers. Higher sprint swimming speeds are associated with an efficient speed transfer from lower- and upper- to whole-body movement.
