Abstract:The aim of this study was to determine the levels of fluoride in commercial teas and to estimate the contribution of tea consumption to the fluoride recommended daily allowance. A total of 558 tea products in 6 categories, green tea, black tea, oolong tea, pu'er tea, white tea, and reprocessed tea, were collected in the period from 2010 to 2013. The levels of fluoride in infusions of these teas were determined by a fluoride-ion selective electrode. The mean fluoride level in all of the tea samples was 85.16 mg/kg. For each category of tea, the mean fluoride levels were 63.04, 99.74, 52.19, 101.67, 159.78, and 110.54 mg/kg for green tea, black tea, white tea, pu'er tea, oolong tea, and reprocessed tea, respectively. The fluoride content of tea from 4 tea zones in descending order were Southern tea zone (111.39 mg/kg) > Southwest tea zone (78.78 mg/kg) > Jiangnan tea zone (71.73 mg/kg) > Jiangbei tea zone (64.63 mg/kg). These areas produced teas with lower fluoride levels than available foreign-produced tea (161.11 mg/kg). The mean chronic daily intake (CDI) was 0.02 mg/(kg•day) or 1.27 mg/kg. Generally, consuming tea from these 6 categories does not result in the intake of excessive amounts of fluoride for the general population.

Abstract:Fluorine contents in 128 tea samples of 9 catalogues from 18 provinces or municipalities were analyzed.The results showed that brick tea had the highest fluorine content,i.e.159.14 mg/kg and jasmine flower scented tea the lowest,with 35.54 mg/kg.Safety levels of various teas with respect to fluorine intake were suggested.Factors resulting the high fluorine content in tea from some tea estates were also discussed. Abstract:Some Tibetans in Sichuan Province in southwestern China have been suffering from fluorosis, due to drinking and eating tea with high fluoride (F) and aluminium (Al) contents. Tea plants, soils of tea plantations and tea products from Yaan, Gaoxian and Yibin Cities in Sichuan Province were investigated to evaluate the factors affecting F and Al contents in tea products. The F and Al concentrations of four commercial brands of brick teas were significantly higher than those of 11 brands of green teas. Chemical analysis indicated that total and available F and Al concentrations in tea plantation soils in Yaan and Gaoxian were within the normal range compared with acid soils in South China and tea soils in Fujian Province. Edaphic conditions did not contribute to the high F and Al concentrations in brick tea. Analysis of raw materials of brick tea indicated that old leaves were the major contributors to the high F and Al contents contained in brick tea. There were also great variations among different tea varieties in accumulating F and Al, and concentrations of F and Al in tea variety of Qianmei 303 were about 2-3-fold higher than the other three varieties. Selection of appropriate varieties would be important to lower F and Al contents in tea products.

Abstract:Tea Camellia sinensis (L.), a perennial shrub, is cultivated in acidic soils. It has been noted that the occurrence of fluorosis in some inhabitants of pastoral and semiagricultural, semipastoral areas of Sichuan Province, People’s Republic of China, is due to drinking a large quantity of tea liquor made from brick tea. Brick tea is made from fallen leaves and old leaves, and is not a considered a quality tea. The fluoride (F) contents of tea bushes and soil samples collected from five plantations from Guangdong Province, People’s Republic of China, were tested. Fluorine accumulated mainly in leaves, especially in fallen leaves. The F concentration in fallen leaves (0.6–2.8 mg/g) were higher than that in young leaves (0.3–1.0 mg/g). Their concentrations were related to the total F and extractable F contents in the top soil (0–20 cm). In addition, soil pH and extractable Al concentration also affected the F contents in soils and plant tissues. Two methods (repeated and continuous) of infusing tea were employed to brew 17 brands of tea leaves in six categories: green tea, black tea, oolong tea, pureh tea, brick tea and black tea from England and Sri Lanka. In general, F contents in the infusions accounted for 24 to 83% of the total F contents of the original tea leaf samples. The cumulative F contents detected in the tea liquor prepared by repeated infusion were slightly higher than those prepared by continuous infusion. Brick tea released an extremely high F content (7.34 mg/litre), when compared with release from black tea (1.89 mg/litre) or green tea (1.60 mg/litre). In order to prevent development of fluorosis, the maximum consumption of fu-brick tea and black brick tea should be 1.7 litres and 4.8 litres/day respectively.

Abstract:Aims: Due to new evidence on fluoride neurotoxicity during early life, this study examined maternal exposure to fluoride through tea consumption in a low-fluoride region and measured fluoride releases from commercially available teas (tea bags and loose teas) to determine the need to limit fluoride exposure. Methods: Maternal urine fluoride (MUF) concentrations were measured in spot urine samples ( N=118) from first-trimester pregnant women and in prepared tea infusions made with deionised water from 33 brand teas and 57 loose-tea products, as determined by the direct method of using a fluoride-selective electrode. Results: The fluoride concentration in the local drinking water supplies ranged from 0.10 to 0.18 mg/L, and the creatinine-adjusted MUF ranged from 0.09 to 1.57 mg/L. Seventeen per cent of the women were daily tea drinkers, and their MUFs were higher than those with no consumption ( p=0.002). The fluoride concentration from tea bags ranged from 0.34 to 2.67 mg/L, while loose teas showed 0.72–4.50 mg/L (black), 0.56–1.58 mg/L (oolong), 1.28–1.50 mg/L (green), and 0.33–1.17 mg/L (white tea). Conclusions: Fluoride exposure among pregnant women increases with tea consumption, with likely risks of developmental neurotoxicity to their children. As the fluoride release from tea varies widely, the fluoride concentration should be indicated on tea packages in order to allow consumers to make informed decisions on minimising their fluoride exposure.

Abstract:Selenium (Se) is an anti-oxidative trace element in humans, and its deficit may induce adverse effects such as cognitive impairment, thyroid disorders and infertility. Tea drinking is considered as an important source of Se, and thus Se-enriched teas have been promoted in the Chinese market. However, data on Se exposure by consuming tea is still limited. Therefore, this study investigated Se levels in twelve typical brands and five types of tea, and estimated the daily intake for Chinese adults. A total of 217 tea samples (green, white, oolong, black and dark tea) from different regions in China were collected from October 2020 to January 2021. We determined Se levels in tea by an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The levels of Se ranged from below the limit of quantification (LOQ) to 1.692 μg/g, with a detection frequency of 99.1%. We observed regional difference in Se levels among teas from different provinces. The highest Se level in tea was found in Hunan province (0.611 μg/g), which might be due to higher Se content in the cultivated soil. Daily intake of Se in tea was 1.88 × 10–3-0.64 μg/day, which is less than the reference values (60 μg/day).

Abstract:Samples of young shoot, mature leaf, twig, root, and litter were taken from four recently bred varieties Zhe-nong 113, Zhe-nong 121, Zi-sun, and Bi-feng grown at two tea plantations located at Zhejiang and Jiangsu Provinces. The results showed that the concentrations of F and Al in tea plants were significantly different among the four varieties. It is therefore possible that F and Al concentrations in tea products can be reduced through variety selection. The results also revealed that old leaves would be the major contribution to the high levels of F and Al in brick tea since it is produced mainly for old leaves. Therefore, in order to eliminate the hazard of over-exposure to F and Al derived from tea, younger shoot should be used for making tea products while mature leaves should be avoided.

Kinetic Study on Leaching of Fluorine from Green Tea

Abstract:Kinetic behaviors of fluorine leaching from tea were studied. The leaching process of fluorine could be divided into initial fast stage and later slow stage. The duration of fast stage 1 depended on leaf particle size and temperature. The higher the temperature and the smaller the leaf particle size, the shorter the duration of initial fast stage. Based on the test results, a two-step infusion method was developed to control fluorine level in tea liquor. When the tea was infused in 50 degrees C water for 20 s (first infusion) and then the residue leaf was re-infused in boiling water for 5 min (second infusion), more than 26% of total fluorine was removed during first infusion, but more than 80% of catechins and caffeine of the teas remained in the second infusions which had a F level 0.70 mg L-1 or less. It reflected that the two-step infusion method is an alternative to control excessive fluorine exposure for tea drinkers.

Abstract:85 tea samples were collected from various tea producing area in China, and lead concentration of these samples was studied using dithizone chromometer method. The results showed that the lead average concentration of these samples was 1.97 mg/kg, and that the sequence of lead level in different kinds of tea was pu'erjasmine teagreen teablack teaoolong teabrick tea. It was suggested that suitable plucking and steaming-fixation processing might decrease the lead level of tea.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Water-soluble fluoride (WS-F) can be absorbed directly by tea plants from soil and comprises a major source of dietary F in tea consumers. To reveal the WS-F accumulation in tea leaves and assess WS-F health risks, 70 sets of samples including tea leaves at three maturity stages and corresponding topsoil were collected from Xinyang, China. The WS-F contents in tea samples and pH values in soil samples were determined. RESULTS The contents of WS-F in tea leaves exhibited a positive correlation with leaf maturity. The contents of WS-F in tea leaves showed a positive correlation with WS-F contents in the soil as the soil pH value exceeds 5. All the bud with two leaves samples, 84.29% of the third to sixth leaves samples, and 78.57% mature leaves samples in 5-min infusion tend to be no health threat. The leaching characteristics of WS-F from tea leaves were influenced by the leaf maturity and soaking time. CONCLUSION Taking measures to control pH and WS-F concentration of plantations soil, as well as drinking tea infusion made from young leaves or reducing soaking time could decrease the WS-F health risk. Can photodynamic therapy reverse the signs of photoageing and field cancerization?

Abstract:Topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective and now widely approved therapy for actinic keratosis (AK), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in situ and certain basal cell carcinomas (BCC). As the photosensitizer can be applied to lesional and surrounding skin, with large area LED light sources available, PDT is increasingly used to treat field cancerization, the presence of multiple nonmelanoma skin cancers and precursor lesions including dysplastic keratinocytes in photoexposed sites. Several studies, predominantly in organ transplant recipients on long-term immunosuppressants, observed that field PDT can delay and reduce the development of a number of new nonmelanoma skin cancer lesions. Although a single treatment was shown to prevent AK, BCC and SCC during a 1-year follow-up study, other studies suggest repeated PDT sessions are necessary, with the current consensus that PDT can prevent AK, and potentially SCC, in transplant recipients. The development of multiple AK is also common against a background of severe photodamage in immunocompetent patients. A significant delay in the development of new AK has recently been observed in a split-face, placebo-controlled study of field PDT in photodamaged skin. Several clinical studies show that PDT can also improve other aspects of photodamage, with improvement in wrinkles, tactile roughness, sallowness and mottled pigmentation. Can PDT therefore achieve reversal of signs of photoageing and field cancerization? Beyond clinical observation, do we have evidence that PDT does anything more than treat emerging as well as visible superficial skin cancers, with a favourable healing profile? A recent study showed the potential for PDT to reduce the histological features of actinic damage and elastosis, and significantly decrease expression of Ki-67 and TP53, although expression of cyclin D1 remained stable following biopsies taken from lesional skin. Evidence that a single PDT session was insufficient to clear the early oncogenic markers supports clinical experience that multiple treatments are required to optimize the preventive effect of PDT. In this issue of BJD, Szeimies et al. report on the clinical, histological and immunohistochemical effect of three consecutive monthly treatments with PDT using methyl aminolaevulinate (MAL) on photodamaged skin with multiple AK. In addition to clearing 90% of visible AKs, a significant decrease in keratinocyte atypia (following biopsy from clinically normal skin) was reported, in addition to an increase in collagen deposition and improvement in solar elastosis. A decrease in TP53 expression using nonspecific staining was not significant but a smaller change might be anticipated preto post-PDT given that clinically normal skin was sampled. We are therefore accumulating evidence that PDT has the potential to reduce the carcinogenic potential in areas of field cancerization and promote improvement in certain aspects of photoageing. Factors Determining Copper Concentration in Tea Leaves Produced at Yuyao County, China

Abstract:Over consumption of copper (Cu) from food and beverages is detrimental to human health. In this study, we investigated Cu accumulation in tea leaves produced in Yuyao County in China. Copper concentrations in all tea leaves sampled from tea gardens were below 60mgkg−1, the permissible level given by the Chinese Ministry of Health; however, 15% of the samples were over 15mgkg−1, the allowable level of ‘green food’ as defined by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture. These observations indicate that Cu concentrations in tea leaves from the investigated producing areas are acceptable, but still a concern. To understand what factors affect the Cu accumulation in the tea leaves, we further analyzed soils from the tea gardens for Cu availability, pH and organic matter content. The Cu availability in soil was found to be closely correlated with the soil’s H+ activity, followed by organic matter content. The soils in the tea gardens were also found to be severely acidic with the lowest pH of 3.58. The tea garden soils, if fertilized with animal manure, could also contribute to the risk of Cu contamination. Additionally, Cu concentrations in the final products of tea leaves were greatly increased by the machinery processing in factories that used copper boards at the twisting stage. In one factory, the Cu level was increased by 32.1mgkg−1. This study suggests that both edaphic and non-edaphic factors can contribute to the final Cu accumulation in tea leaves used by consumers.
Risk assessment of fluoride exposure to pork and offal products of pigs in Shanghai City]

Abstract:To estimate the exposure of fluoride to pork and offal products of pigs and assess their health risks in Shanghai residents.Conducting a dietary survey in 1630 residents cluster sampled from four districts in Shanghai. Detecting fluoride in 872 pork and offal samples, and using Monte Carlo method to estimate the chronic daily intake (CDI) and hazard quotient (HQ) of fluoride in Shanghai residents caused by eating pork and offal products of pigs.The CDI of fluoride is less than the tolerable daily intake (TDI), and the HQ is less than 1. The intake of pork and offal product is less in elder people than young people (P < 0.05), and that is less in female than male (P < 0.05). The fluoride content in offal is higher than that in pork (P < 0.05), the fluoride in kidney (P < 0.05) and liver (P < 0.05) is higher than that in other viscera.The intake of fluoride from pork and offal products in Shanghai residents is lower than the TDI of fluoride and not reaching the risk level of fluoride causing dental fluorosis, unhealthy of bone and osteofluorosis.
Fluoride content in various types of tea used by tea stalls in Salem district - An in vitro cross sectional study

Abstract:Background: Tea leaves are natural rich source of fluoride and are known as fluorine absorbants. It is consumed on large scale in India and thus needs to be monitored for its daily fluoride consumption by customers. Tea manufacturers should mention fluoride concentrations on the packages to avoid overdose through unknown consumption by consumers. Objectives: To detect the levels of fluoride in tea at different periods of boiling and to compare the fluoride levels in various brands of tea at different periods of boiling. Methodology: A survey was conducted in 25 tea stalls of Salem on the type of tea and time of boiling black tea. The five most common brands of tea will bought for the study. The stainless-steel vessel will be used in the methodology for boiling tea. Mettur water will be used for the preparation of black tea and 1 g of tea leaves to 100 ml of hot (~95°C) deionized water (1% w/v tea infusion) and allowed the mixture to stand for 5 min in a glass beaker. After 5 min, the infusions were filtered and again left standing until they are cooled to room temperature. All fluoride measurements will be completed within 4 h of the preparation of the infusion. About 2 min and 4 min boiling will be followed. The fluoride present in each brand of tea will be calculated from black tea prepared using 2-(parasulfophenylazo)-1,8-dihydroxy-3,6-naphthalene-disulfonate (SPADNS) calorimetric method. Results: The distribution of mean score of fluoride level in tea powders available in tea shops of Salem when boiled in distilled water was (559.00 ± 112.12). The mean score of fluoride level in tea powders available in tea shops of Salem boiled in Mettur water was (689.05 ± 116.34). To test the significance of difference between the average fluoride in tea powders available in tea shops of Salem when boiled in distilled water and Mettur water, the independent t-test was used. the P value is <0.05, and hence, it is found that there is significant difference between the average fluoride in tea powders available in tea shops of Salem boiled in distilled water and Mettur water. Conclusion: Thus, the study showed tea consists of significant amount of fluoride concentration that is consumed on daily basis. The study also evaluated fluoride concentration in tea preparations using different water. The study shows necessity for regulations of mentioning fluoride concentration on tea packs.

Серьезную проблему представляет трансформация острой боли в хронический болевой синдром, требующий специфических подходов к лечению, которое, как правило, занимает длительное время и сопряжено со значительными финансовыми затратами [10]. Abstract:The tea plant is known as a fluorine accumulator. Fluoride (F) content in fresh leaves collected from 14 plantations in China was investigated. The F increased with maturity, and the F variation was remarkable in the tender shoots. Furthermore, significant negative relationships were observed between F content and the content of the quality parameters total polyphenols and amino acids. These substances are rich in young leaves and poor in mature ones. With regard to quality of tea products, the relationship with F content was studied using 12 brands of tea products in four categories: green tea, oolong tea, black tea, and jasmine tea collected from six provinces. The F level increased with the decline in quality and showed good correlation with the quality grades. The results suggest that the F content could be used as a quality indicator for tea evaluation.

Abstract:The consumption of heavy metals is detrimental to human health and most countries restrict the concentration of metals such as lead (Pb) in food and beverages. Recent tests have detected high Pb concentrations in certain commercial brands of tea leaves and this finding has raised concerns for both producers and consumers. To investigate what factors may be contributing to the increase in Pb accumulation in the tea leaves we collected tea leaves and soils from tea producing areas and analyzed them for Pb concentration, pH and organic matter content. The result showed the Pb concentration of 47% investigated tea leaves samples was beyond 2 mg kg(-1), the permissible levels given by China. The total Pb concentration in the surface and subsurface soil layers averaged 36.4 and 32.2 mg kg(-1), respectively which fall below of the 60 mg kg(-1) limit provided for organic tea gardens in China. The pH of the tea garden soils was severely acidic with the lowest pH of 3.37. Soils under older tea gardens tended to have a lower pH and a higher Pb bioavailability which was defined as the amount of lead extracted by CaCl2 solution than those under younger tea gardens. We found that the concentration of bioavailable Pb and the percentage of bioavailable Pb (bioavailable Pb relative to total Pb concentration) were positively correlated with soil H+ activity and soil organic matter content, and the organic matter accumulation contribute more effects on Pb bioavailability in these two factors. We conclude that soil acidification and organic matter accumulation could contribute to increasing Pb bioavailability in soil and that these could increase Pb uptake and accumulation in the tea leaves.

Fluoride and Aluminium in Tea (Camellia sinensis L.)—Tea Quality Indicators and Risk Factors for Consumers

Abstract:In recent years, the quality and sourcing of tea have gained importance in Europe, but information remains scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the concentrations of fluoride (F–) and total aluminium (Al) species in infusions of commercially available teas in Slovenia, and thus in Europe, and to relate them to tea quality and their impact on consumer safety. F– concentrations were determined using a fluoride-ion-selective electrode and Al concentrations using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. A comparison of the results obtained for four selected tea samples using the calibration curve and a standard addition technique showed good agreement, with no interferences caused by the sample matrix. The concentrations of 35 commercial teas ranged from 0.34 to 4.79 and 0.51 to 8.90 mg/L for F– and Al, respectively. The average concentrations of the two elements followed the same descending order: black filter > green filter > black leaves ≈ green leaves. Single and multivariate statistical methods supported the categorisation of teas by packaging but not by type, with tea in filter bags being more expensive than loose tea. The linear relationship between F– and Al concentrations in infusions (C(Al) = 1.2134 · C(F–)) allows for the determination of one element and estimation of the other, leading to a significant reduction in laboratory effort and cost. This research advances tea assessment by proposing Al concentration alongside F– as a quality indicator and provides the basis for tea-monitoring protocols. Finally, the daily consumption of larger quantities of tea (≈1 L) with elevated F– and Al concentrations could potentially pose a health risk.
