Abstract:BACKGROUND:From 2005 to 2015, the prevalence of dental caries in both primary and permanent dentitions was significantly increased in China. Previous studies have shown that the prevalence of permanent dental caries in school-aged children had already reached 19.7%-54.0%, 97.5% affecting first permanent molars. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and contributing factors of dental caries in 6-year-old children in four regions of China to provide information for oral health promotion programs. METHODS:A randomized cluster sampling method was employed in the study. All 6-year-old first grade children from the selected schools were invited to receive a clinical oral examination. Dental caries were diagnosed according to the World Health Organization criteria. The erupting first permanent molars were recorded using the modified International Caries Detection Assessment System. Questionnaires assessing children's oral health-related behaviors and their caretakers' oral health awareness and attitudes were completed by the children's parents or guardians. RESULTS:Overall, 4,936 6-year-old school children participated in the survey. The prevalence of caries among these children was 87.7%, with a mean number of decayed, missing and filled teeth of 6.04 (SD, 4.24). In primary dentition, the caries prevalence was 87.7%, and the mean dmft score was 6.01 (SD, 4.22). In permanent dentition, the caries prevalence was 2.0%, the mean DFS score was 0.04 (SD, 0.31). All permanent dental caries occurred on the first permanent molars. Carious tooth surfaces were identified as modified ICDAS code "A" to indicate initial caries and distinct visual change in enamel. The mean DAS score of non-cavitated caries in the first permanent molars was 0.18 (SD, 0.67). Logistic regression analysis showed that regional and gender factors were significantly related to the caries experience of these children. CONCLUSIONS:The 6-year-old children from four regions of China had sever primary dental caries and the first permanent molars were at high risk for dental caries. It is critical to protect permanent teeth from caries as early as the eruption of the first permanent molars.
The Relationship Between Dental Caries and Obesity among Primary School Children Aged 5 to 14 Years

Abstract:Background: Previous study revealed that the link between dental caries and obesity has been controversial. The purpose of this research is to investigate the association between dental caries and obesity among primary school children in Wannan area, China. Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed to collect the routine health screening data for primary school children aged 5-14 years inWannan area,China, Overweight and obesity status were determined using the International Obesity Task Force standard (IOTF) BMI cut-off points. Caries status was recorded based on WHO recommendations. Results: Our results revealed that the overall caries prevalence of the subjects was 44.9%, Maximum number of caries affected children belonged to underweight and normal group, followed by overweight, and the least number was obesity. These differences were statistically significant (chi-square test, P < 0.001). Children with obesity were 1.908 times (OR =1.908; CI95%=1.750, 2.079) more likely have caries than children with underweight or health weight. Overweight children were 1.547 times (OR = 1.547; CI95% = 1.479, 1.618) more likely to have caries than children with underweight or health weight. After adjusted the gender and age, a statistically significant association was also observed between body mass index categories and caries. Conclusions: Obesity may have a significant effect on caries prevalence of primary school children in Wannan area, China. The importance of obesity should not only be emphasized with respect to general diseases but also with regard to carious lesions.
Dental Caries Status and Its Associated Factors among 3- to 5-Year-old Children in China: A National Survey.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the prevalence and severity of dental caries among pre-school children in China as part of the 4th National Oral Health Survey. METHODS The sampling process was conducted with a multistage stratified cluster method. A total of 40,360 children aged between 3 and 5 years were recruited for this study. Each participant was clinically assessed according to the 5th edition of the oral health survey's basic methods recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and their parents or grandparents completed a questionnaire at a face-to-face interview. The status of dental caries was shown in the form of the mean dmft and the prevalence of dental caries. The logistic regression analysis was performed to study the relationships between the prevalence of dental caries and the selected variables. RESULTS The prevalence of dental caries was 50.8%, 63.6% and 71.9% for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds, respectively. The mean dmft was 2.28, 3.40 and 4.24, respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed that children who were mixed-fed had a higher chance of staying free of dental caries; children who had dessert before going to bed were associated with a higher probability of caries. CONCLUSION The status of dental caries among preschool children in China is on the increase. The preschoolers' dental caries status related to their breastfeeding conditions within the first 6 months of life and their snacking habits.
The prevalence of dental caries and its associated factors among preschool children in Huizhou, China: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Dental caries among preschool children were prevalent worldwide and had a significant impact on children and their families. Understanding its prevalence and risk factors helps to optimize the delivery of oral health care to the target population and promote their oral health ultimately. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the prevalence of dental caries and its associated factors among 3- to 5-year-old children in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, China. Method: We recruited children from 21 kindergartens adopting multistage sampling method. Two examiners performed oral examination. They assessed children's dental caries experience following the World Health Organization criteria. Children's dental caries activity, malocclusion, tonsil size and pH value of saliva were evaluated. Parental questionnaires collected child's sociodemographic background and oral-health-related behaviors. Data were analyzed by univariate analysis and logistic regression using SPSS. Results: This study invited 1,485 children and recruited 1,348 (53.2% boys) (response rate: 90.8%). Dental caries prevalence rate was 58.2% for 3-, 70.7% for 4-, 80.5% for 5-year-old and 72.9% for all recruited children. The mean dmft score (±SD) was 3.38 (±4.26) for 3-, 4.75 (±4.96) for 4-, 5.81 (±5.71) for 5-year-old and 4.99 (±5.02) for all children. Age, family status (singleton or not), monthly family income, mother and father's education level, tonsil grading score, spacing in dentition, Cariostat score (reflecting the caries activity), dental plaque index, duration of breastfeeding, dental visit experience, tooth brushing habits and sugary snacking before sleeping were statistically related to the prevalence of dental caries (p < 0.050) in univariate analysis. These factors were further analyzed in the regression model. The results of the final model indicated dental caries were associated with age (p < 0.001), Cariostat score (p < 0.001), spacing (p < 0.001), tonsil grading score (p = 0.013), singleton or not (p = 0.002), sugary snacking habit before bed (p < 0.001) and breast-feeding duration (p = 0.050). Conclusion: Dental caries was prevalent among 3-to 5-year-old preschool children in Huizhou, China. Children's age, caries activity, tonsil size, malocclusion, family background, sugary snacking habit and breast-feeding habit were related to the prevalence of dental caries. More emphasis should be placed on prevention targeting the risk factors from early life.
Impact of Behavioural Factors and Living Conditions on Dental Caries Among Pupils from Shanghai and Jiangxi Province in China: A School-based Cross-sectional Study

Abstract:Purpose: Dental health is associated with the growth and development, physical or psychological, of children. Although numerous preventive measures are available, dental caries among primary schoolchildren remains a public health concern in China. Understanding the disparity of children's dental health between rural and urban areas in China could provide further insight into the prevention of caries. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the oral health of pupils aged 6-12 years in Pudong District (Shanghai) and Lichuan (Jiangxi Province) in China. A questionnaire survey was performed among children's guardians to identify the potential risk factors for childhood dental caries. Results: A total of 1922 primary schoolchildren were included in this study, with 815 from Pudong and 1107 from Lichuan. The mean age of children from Pudong was 8.57 (SD = 1.61), which was statistically significantly lower than their counterpart from Lichuan (9.36 ± 1.75). The prevalence of caries in Pudong and Lichuan was 63.4% and 75.0%, respectively. Statistically significant differences of demographical and behavioural features were observed between schoolchildren in Pudong and Lichuan. In general, Lichuan children had a higher caries risk compared with their Pudong counterparts (OR = 3.43, 95%CI 2.65-4.28). Moreover, the non-parental caregivers, low family income, low parental educational level, as well as bad dietary habits, were identified as risk factors for caries. Conclusions: Childhood caries in the rural area was far more severe than that in the urban area. This disparity was determined by several factors such as the high proportion of left-behind children in the rural area (e.g. children who remain in rural regions of China while their parents leave to work in urban areas). Our government should put the prevention of caries among rural children at a higher priority in the near future to narrow the gap between rural and urban areas.
Oral Health Status and Risk Factors for Caries in Permanent Teeth among 12-year-old Students in Guangdong, Southern China: A Population-based Epidemiological Survey.

Abstract:PURPOSE To assess the current prevalence of caries, gingival bleeding, calculus, and fluorosis and to determine the risk factors for caries in permanent teeth of 12-year-old students in Guangdong Province, China. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional survey was carried out among 1920 12-year-old students in Guangdong Province. All participants were required to undergo an oral health examination. Information concerning the subjects' family background, dietary habits, and relevant oral health behaviour were collected in a structured questionnaire. Chi-squared tests, Wilcoxon rank-sum tests, and the logistic regression model were used in the statistical analysis. RESULTS The prevalence rates of caries in permanent teeth, gingival bleeding, calculus, and fluorosis were 43.07%, 40.57%, 43.75%, and 5.05%, respectively; the average decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index was 1.06±1.721. Residence (odds ratios [OR] rural=1.798, 95% CI: 1.485-2.177), sex (OR female=1.352, 95% CI: 1.121-1.631), paternal education level (OR >9 years=0.755, 95% CI: 0.608-0.936), presence of calculus (OR yes=1.279, 95% CI: 1.057-1.548), and frequency of consumption of sugary snacks (OR frequently=1.418, 95% CI: 1.064-1.890) were statistically significantly associated with the risk of permanent teeth caries. CONCLUSION Oral health in 12-year-olds in Guangdong Province remains to be improved. Rural residence, female sex, the presence of calculus, and frequent consumption of sugary snacks could increase the risk of caries. The paternal educational level was negatively associated with the risk of caries, whereas we found no association between the maternal educational level and the risk of caries in this population.

Abstract:BACKGROUND An accurate and valid caries prevention policy is absent in Zhejiang because of insufficient data. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate oral health status and related risk factors in 12- to 14-year-old students in Zhejiang, China. MATERIAL AND METHODS Using multi-stage, stratified, random sampling, we recruited a total of 4860 students aged 12 to 14 years old from 6 regions in Zhejiang in this cross-sectional study. Dental caries was measured using the Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index and the Significant Caries Index (SiC). Information concerning family background and relevant behaviors was collected in a structured questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was used to study risk factors related to dental caries. RESULTS The overall prevalence of dental caries was 44% and the mean DMFT and SiC scores were 1.14 and 3.11, respectively. Female students had a higher level of dental caries than male students (P<0.01). The annual increase in caries prevalence was 3% with increasing age, and the DMFT score was 0.15. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that female sex, older age, snacks consumption once or more per day, fair or poor self-assessment of dental health, toothache experience, and dental visits were the most significant risk factors for dental caries, with odds ratios ranging from 1.24 to 2.25 (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of dental caries in 12- to 14-year-old students in Zhejiang was low, with a tendency to increase compared with previous oral surveys. Female sex, older age, increased sugar intake, poor oral health self-assessment, and bad dental experience were the most important factors increasing dental caries risks.
Deciduous Dental Caries Status and Associated Risk Factors among Preschool Children in Xuhui District of Shanghai, China

Abstract:Background: This study aims to understand the deciduous dental caries status of preschool children in Xuhui District of Shanghai, China and to analyze the associated risk factors. Methods: In January of 2016, a cross-sectional investigation was conducted to examine the oral health of all the kindergarten children in Xuihui District of Shanghai, China. Meanwhile, a field questionnaire survey was conducted with the children's guardians to ascertain the potential risk factors associated with deciduous dental caries. Results: Among 11,153 children, the prevalence of deciduous dental caries was 47.02%, and the mean dmft score was 2.21. The first three predilection sites were maxillary central primary incisors, mandible second primary molars, and mandible first primary molars. There were statistically significant differences in caries prevalence and dmft among different age groups and different household registration (Hukou) types (P < 0.001). Multivariate Logistic regression suggested that the possible risk factors for deciduous caries included: older age, drinking sweetened beverages frequently, often or usually eating sweets before sleep compared to rarely/never eat them at this time, exclusive or predominant breastfeeding compared to exclusive or predominant artificial feeding and latter introduction of toothbrushing. On the other hand, Shanghai Hukou families, high educational level of guardians (high school or college education), regular parental support for children's toothbrushing, guardians' oral health knowledge, and a good perception about children's oral health conditions were shown as potential protective factors for deciduous dental caries. Conclusions: The deciduous dental caries status of preschool children in Xuhui District of Shanghai was still serious. The caries prevalence in Xuhui, China, is associated with children's age, household registration type, oral health habits, feeding habits, guardians' education level, parental perception about children's oral health and knowledge about oral health.

Abstract:Objective To analyze the prevalence of dental caries and caries degree among school-age children and adolescents in 2005 in China,and to provide bases for the prevention on dental caries.Methods The total subjects were 96 829 Han primary and secondary school students aged 7,9,12,14 and 17 years selected from 30 provinces or cities.They were divided into four groups: Urban and rural,male and female.The dmf incidence,DMF incidence,and mean caries both of the deciduous and permanent tooth were used as measures.Results Great achievements have been got on the prevention and cure of school dental caries in recent years,but some problems still existed.In most of the 7-and 9-year groups,the prevalence of dmf exceeded 50%,and the prevalence of DMF increased with ages,and exceeded 20% in secondary school students.In the constitutional ratio of decaying,missing and filling,the percentage of filling was rather low whereas the percentage of missing was quite high.The prevalence of the dmf,DMF and the mean deciduous caries among the rural primary students were higher than that of their urban counterparts,suggests that the rural student groups became the main loophole of the school dental health practice in China.Conclusion According to the present problems,financial support on school oral health should be increased,and should set up a national school oral service network.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the prevalence and related factors of dental caries in 7-9-year-old children in the Development District in Dalian.Methods: A multi-stage,cluster sampling method was used.Oral examinations were performed by two calibrated dentists according to the criteria and methods used in the Third Chinese National Oral Health Survey.The structured questionnaire included information on socioeconomic status,oral hygiene habits,dietary habits and oral health knowledge.Results: The study sample included 1 160 school children.The prevalence of primary caries experience was 84.9%,and the mean dmft score was 4.44.The corresponding data of permanent teeth were 19.7% and 0.33 respectively.Multiple regression analysis showed that children's residence(P0.05),father's education level(P0.05) and family monthly income(P0.05) were significantly related to the sum of DMFT and dmft scores.Conclusion: The prevalence and severity of dental caries of school children in Dalian are high and socioeconomic factors are significantly related.
Dental caries prevalence and caries-associated risk factors of students aged 12-15 in Xide County of Liangshan Prefecture, China: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Objective About 2 billion people have caries in permanent teeth, and 514 million children have caries in primary teeth worldwide. Regional disparities in caries prevalence are evident in various areas of China. A comprehensive understanding of the status of dental caries and its associated risk factors is essential for developing effective dental health policies in economically disadvantaged regions. Thus, this study aims to examine the prevalence of dental caries and its risk factors among students aged 12–15 in Xide County, a remote mountainous area in China. Design In this cross-sectional study, dental health surveys were conducted using self-administered questionnaires and the Decayed-Missing-Filled Tooth (DMFT) Index. An oral clinical examination was carried out by the criteria and guidelines set forth by WHO. Setting Xide County, Liangshan prefecture, China in 2022. Participants 558 students aged 12–15 years completed the survey. Results The study conducted in Xide County found a dental caries prevalence of 42.5% among 12–15 year-old students, with a mean DMFT of 1.50 (SD=2.25). Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified several significant risk factors for dental caries (p<0.05), including starting brushing after the age of six (OR 0.34, 95% CI 0.17 to 0.65), brushing teeth less than once a day (OR 9.24, 95% CI 5.53 to 15.33) and consuming carbonated drinks more than once a day (OR 0.28, 95% CI 0.14 to 0.53). Additionally, the use of fluoride (OR 0.61, 95% CI 0.43 to 0.85) and awareness of its protective effect on teeth (OR 0.75, 95% CI 0.59 to 0.98) were found to be associated with a lower risk of dental caries (p<0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of dental caries among students aged 12–15 in Xide County was identified as a significant public oral health concern. The oral health behaviours of students were found to be influenced by factors at the family and community levels.

Abstract:This study aims to examine the prevalence of dental caries and periodontitis among children aged 5-12 years in Jinhua, Zhejiang province, and analyze the influencing factors of dental caries and periodontitis. A total of 280 children meeting the study criteria for a first-time oral examination were retrospectively analyzed and divided into caries (n = 190), no-caries (n = 90), periodontitis (n = 85) and non-periodontitis group (n = 195) groups based on the presence of caries or periodontitis. An analysis of general survey questionnaires and logistic regression of dental caries and periodontitis among children in different groups was conducted. Caries disease was diagnosed in 67.86% with an average decayed missing filled tooth (DMFT) of 2.94, and periodontitis was diagnosed in 30.36% of 280 children. The independent risk factors for dental caries were daily brushing habits, parental supervision (assisted) brushing, place of residence and frequency of eating desserts or beverages (p < 0.05). Periodontitis was not related to parental education and knowledge of oral health care (p > 0.05). Periodontitis is independent of plaque, tartar, mastery of brushing methods, regular oral examination, and gargling after meals (p < 0.05). While daily brushing habits, parental supervision (assisted) brushing, place of residence and frequency of eating desserts or beverages were protective factors for dental caries (p < 0.05). According to the prevalence of dental caries and periodontitis among children aged 5-12 in this area as well as the analysis of influencing factors, further effective measures can be taken to reduce the incidence of adverse influencing factors, thereby reducing the risk of dental caries and periodontitis for children.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to explore the factors influencing dental caries among 3–5-year-old children in Guizhou Province and the interrelationship between these factors using structural equation modeling, while providing theoretical references to improve the prevention and control strategy. Materials and Methods: A total of 1,291 children aged 3–5 years in Guizhou Province were selected by a multistage stratified and whole group random sampling to examine the caries prevalence in whole-mouth deciduous teeth crowns, and parents were surveyed with questionnaires to analyze the caries-related factors. IBM SPSS Statistics v 23.0 software (IBM, Armonk, NY, USA) was used for statistical analysis. Results: The caries prevalence of children aged 3–5 years in Guizhou Province was 63.1%, the mean decayed-missing-filled teeth was 3.32, the caries filling rate was 0.5%, and there was no statistically significant difference between urban and rural areas and among genders in each age group; results of logistic regression analysis showed that the caries risk increased with the following factors: age, brushing frequency <2 times per day when parents did not take their children to the dentist, and with parents poor evaluation of the oral condition of their children. The higher the education of the parent, the lower the risk of children suffering from caries in deciduous teeth. Conclusions: With an overall poor situation about oral hygiene habits, oral healthcare attitude of the parents, and behavior transformation, the prevalence of dental caries in the deciduous teeth of children aged 3–5 years in Guizhou Province is high, and their caries status was severe, with more than 99% of the caries cases that were untreated. Therefore, prevention and treatment measures of caries in preschool children need strengthening through the improvement of public awareness and the enhancement of the management of oral health habits of their children.

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the prevalence, severity, oral distribution, and associated risk factors of carious lesions in the pri- mary teeth in children in Jinzhou, China, aged 7-9 years. Materials and methods: A total of 1603 primary school students aged 7-9 years old from public and private schools in Jinzhou were recruited using multi-stage, stratified, and random sampling methods for cross-sectional studies. Carious lesions in the primary teeth of school-age children were detected and recorded according to the World Health Organiza- tion standard, and a questionnaire was collected from a parent or guardian with information on the relevant risk factors for the child. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of factors related to carious lesions were estimated using binary logistic regression analysis (p<0.05). Results: The prevalence of carious lesions in the primary teeth was 74.5%, the average number of carious lesions was 3.02, and dmft was 4.08 ± 2.74. There were 655 cases (77.1%) of dental carious lesions in boys and 546 cases (72.5%) in girls, and the difference between them was statistically significant (p<0.05). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that the mother's educational level, brushing frequency, brushing time, and consumption of soft drinks, desserts, and sweets were all associated with a higher prevalence of carious lesions (p<0.05). Conclusions: The children in our sample had a high incidence of carious lesions of the primary teeth, especially the man- dibular primary molars. Social demographic factors, oral hygiene habits, and dietary habits all play an important role in the occurrence of carious lesions.

Abstract:We show how the motion of cosmic superstrings in extra dimensions can modify the gravitational wave signal from cusps. Additional dimensions both round off cusps, as well as reducing the probability of their formation, and thus give a significant dimension dependent damping of the gravitational waves. We look at the implication of this effect for LIGO and LISA, as well as commenting on more general frequency bands.

Abstract:PURPOSE To study the prevalence of dental caries in primary dentition of 5-year-old children in Northeast of China, and assess the risk factors for dental caries. METHODS The representative samples were selected by multi-stage, stratified and random sampling from the three provinces of Northeast of China. Dental caries of 2353 children at five-year age were recorded according to WHO criteria. The questionnaire were finished by 1191 parents of the children and analyzed with X(2) test and logistic regression using SPSS 12.0 software package. RESULTS The prevalence of dental caries in 5-year-old children was 75.82% and dmft was 4.63. The lowest caries prevalence was noted in Heilongjiang province. The important predictors of dental caries were the educational level of parents (P<0.001) and eating sweet food before sleep (P=0.006). CONCLUSIONS To reduce the dental caries in primary dentition, oral health education for the parents should be emphasized and sugar-intake before sleeping should be controlled.

Abstract:Objective To investigate oral health status of the rural children and adolescents in order to provide the scientific evidence to formulate an appropriate strategy for improving their oral health levels.Methods A randomized,stratified and clustering sampling procedure was used in 2793 of children and adolescents at the age groups of 1 to 12,15,and 18 years old in two rural communities at the township level of two provinces.The examination of dental caries and periodontal diseases was carried out by using WHO basic methods and analysis of the distribution among caries free children and high caries children and to assess the range and severity of dental diseases in order to identify the priorities for the intervention.Results Dental caries level was very high in preschool children.The prevalence rate was 72.9% ,and mean dmft 3.64 at the age of 6,in which 27.15% of caries was free,and 52.2% of high caries.Ninety seven percentof caries was untreated.Dental caries in primary dentition was gradually reduced by aging from 7 to 12 years old,and it still exists at the 12 years old.Dental caries in permanent teeth was very low,and the prevalence rate was 21% ,mean DMFT 0.38 at the 12 years old, 95% of caries was untreated.The soft debris index was at the moderate level,and oral hygiene was rather poor.The bleeding and calculus was rather severe in the adolescents.The shallow pockets were very low and no deep pockets were identified.Conclusion Dental caries in primary dentition of the rural children was very severe.The caries level in the permanent teeth was very low,and most of caries were untreated.Oral hygiene was rather poor,gingivitis and calculus were serious,and the priority should be given to the development of primary oral health care for the rural children.

Abstract:Dental caries is one of the most common infectious diseases affecting 6-8-year-old children, especially their first permanent molars (FPMs). This study explored the prevalence of dental caries on FPMs by analyzing the oral health status of 1,423,720 children aged 6-8 years in Zhejiang Province, China. The data were extracted from the dental electronic records of the schoolchildren attending the Oral Health Promotion Project (OHPP), conducted during 2013-2017 in Zhejiang Province. Multiple logistic regression models were used to determine the factors affecting dental caries. Boys and girls accounted for 53.2% and 46.8% of the subjects, respectively. From 2013 to 2017, the prevalence of dental caries on FPMs increased: 2013: 20.4%; 2014: 25.3%; 2015: 24.5%; 2016: 27.0%; and 2017: 29.0%, despite the OHPP conducted. Based on multiple logistic regression model, girls had a significantly higher risk of FPM caries compared to boys (OR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.37-1.39, p < 0.0001); compared with the caries rates in urban areas, the caries risk was significantly higher in rural areas (OR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.14-1.16, p < 0.0001). In terms of geographic location in Zhejiang Province, the odds ratios of the caries risk of the east, south, west, and north were 1.35 (1.33-1.36), 1.3 (1.28-1.31), 0.81 (0.8-0.83), and 0.82 (0.81-0.84), respectively (p < 0.0001), by considering the central region as a reference. The caries prevalence of FPMs was high, with an increasing tendency and gender, social, cultural, and environmental factors affecting the caries prevalence.

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the prevalence and related factors of dental caries in 3-year-old children in the Development District in Dalian.Methods:A multi-stage,randomized,cluster sampling method was used in the cross-sectional study.All 3-year-old children in the selected 15 kindergartens were invited to take part in the oral health examination conducted by 3 calibrated examiners.The WHO recommended caries diagnosis criteria were used.The structured questionnaire including the information of children's oral hygiene habits,dietary habits,parents' oral health knowledge and socioeconomic status was completed by the parents.Results:1 220 3-year-old children completed the clinical oral examination and 964 children's parents(79.0％) finished the questionnaire.The caries prevalence in 3-year-old children was 62.8％,and the mean dmft and dmfs scores were 3.40 and 7.34,respectively.No differences in the prevalence of caries,mean dmft and dmfs scores were found between boys and girls(P ＞0.05).Logistic regression analysis showed that the frequency of sweets and sugar-containing beverages consumption(P＜0.05),parents'education level(P＜0.05) were significantly related to the caries prevalence.Conclusion:The prevalence and severity of dental caries in 3-year-old children in Dalian Development District were high and the frequency of consumption sugar-containing foods and beverages,parents'education level were related to the decay prevalence.
