Abstract:Motor vehicle emissions usually constitute the most significant source of ultrafine particles (diameter <0.1μm) in an urban environment. Zhu et al. (J. Air Waste Manage. Assoc., 2002, accepted for publication) conducted systematic measurements of the concentration and size distribution of ultrafine particles in the vicinity of a highway dominated by gasoline vehicle. The present study compares these previous measurements with those made on Interstate 710 freeway in Los Angeles. The 710 freeway was selected because more than 25% of the vehicles are heavy-duty diesel trucks. Particle number concentration and size distribution in the size range from 6 to 220nm were measured by a condensation particle counter and a scanning mobility particle sizer, respectively. Measurements were taken at 17, 20, 30, 90, 150, and 300m downwind and 200m upwind from the center of the freeway. At each sampling location, concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) and black carbon (BC) were also measured by a Dasibi CO monitor and an Aethalometer, respectively. The range of average concentration of CO, BC and total particle number concentration at 17m was 1.9–2.6ppm, 20.3–24.8μg/m3, 1.8×105–3.5×105/cm3, respectively. Relative concentration of CO, BC and particle number decreased exponentially and tracked each other well as one moves away from the freeway. Both atmospheric dispersion and coagulation appears to contribute to the rapid decrease in particle number concentration and change in particle size distribution with increasing distance from the freeway. Average traffic flow during the sampling periods was 12,180 vehicles/h with more than 25% of vehicles being heavy-duty diesel trucks. Ultrafine particle number concentration measured at 300m downwind from the freeway was indistinguishable from upwind background concentration. These data may be used to estimate exposure to ultrafine particles in the vicinity of major highways.
Concentrations of air toxics in motor vehicle-dominated environments

Abstract:We at the Desert Research Institute (DRI*) measured volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including several mobile-source air toxics (MSATs), particulate matter with a mass mean aerodynamic diameter < or = 2.5 pm (PM2.5), black carbon (BC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), and carbon monoxide (CO) on highways in Los Angeles County during summer and fall 2004, to characterize the diurnal and seasonal variations in measured concentrations related to volume and mix of traffic. Concentrations of on-road pollutants were then compared to corresponding measurements at fixed monitoring sites. The on-road concentrations of CO and MSATs were higher in the morning under stable atmospheric conditions and during periods of higher traffic volumes. In contrast, BC concentrations, measured as particulate light absorption, were higher on truck routes during the midday sampling periods despite more unstable atmospheric conditions. Compared to the measurements at the three near-road sites, the 1-hour averages of on-road BC concentrations were as much as an order of magnitude higher. The peak 1-minute average concentrations were two orders of magnitude higher for BC and were between two and six times higher for PM2.5 mass. The on-road concentrations of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) during the summer were 3.5 +/- 0.7 and 1.2 +/- 0.6 times higher during morning and afternoon commuting periods, respectively, compared to annual average 24-hour concentrations measured at air toxic monitoring network sites. These ratios were higher during the fall, with smaller diurnal differences (4.8 +/- 0.7 and 3.9 +/- 0.6 for morning and afternoon commuting periods, respectively). Ratios similar to those for BTEX were obtained for 1,3-butadiene (BD) and styrene. On-road concentrations of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were up to two times higher than at air toxics monitoring sites, with fall ratios slightly higher than summer ratios. Chemical mass balance (CMB) receptor model calculations attributed the sum of BTEX almost exclusively to gasoline engine exhaust for on-road samples and all but 5% to 10% of the BTEX at the three near-road sites. CMB analysis attributed 46% to 52% (+/- 7) of the ambient total particulate carbon (TC) at the three near-road sites to diesel exhaust and 10% to 17% (+/- 7) to gasoline exhaust; it attributed about 90% of the ambient elemental carbon (EC) concentrations (measured as refractory carbon using the thermal evolution method) to diesel exhaust. Diesel particulate carbon (DPC) concentrations were estimated by multiplying the mean ratio of TC to EC from the source-dominated ambient samples collected on road on Terminal Island (1.30 +/- 0.28), which is located between the Long Beach and Los Angeles ports, with the measured ambient EC concentrations at the three near-road sites. DPC estimates from EC measurements correlate well with the diesel source contributions calculated with the CMB model. The indication from these apportionments that BC or EC is a good surrogate for diesel exhaust is further supported by the positive correlation of on-road BC concentrations with volumes of truck traffic. Traffic counts have been used in past health assessment studies as surrogates for estimating near-road exposure concentrations with appropriate weighting for proximity to the road. However, the results of this study show that it is necessary to account for the proportion of diesel trucks to total vehicular traffic because of the disproportionate contribution of diesel exhaust to BC and to directly emitted PM. Alternatively, easily measured pollutants such as CO and BC can serve as reasonable surrogates for MSATs (e.g., BTEX and BD) and DPC, respectively. Measuring CO and BC is a reasonably cost-effective approach to quantifying hot-spot exposure concentrations of MSATs that is perhaps more accurate than what is possible using only data from regional air quality monitoring stations or air quality modeling results.

Abstract:When the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS-II) was introduced, a two-number coding system that identifies restorations/sealants with the first digit and scores the caries lesions with a second digit was suggested. The aim of this study was, first, to assess the intra- and interexaminer reproducibility of this method applied by predoctoral dental students and, second, to evaluate the influence of an additional theoretical training session on the reproducibility values. Twenty-four third-year dental students at Philipps University of Marburg, Germany, were trained in a theoretical session by an experienced examiner. The students were randomly divided into two groups to examine extracted teeth. The assessments were repeated after three weeks. Prior to the second examinations, one group received an additional theoretical training session. For the restoration code, mean kappa values for intra- and interexaminer reproducibility were between 0.28 and 0.82. For the caries code, mean kappa values for intra- and interexaminer reproducibility were between 0.34 and 0.72. The mean kappa values of the two groups did not differ significantly, either on the first digit or on the caries code (p>0.05).

Abstract:Background. Traffic-related air pollution is associated with increased cardiopulmonary morbidity and mortality. Evidence suggests that oxidative stress may mediate these adverse effects. We hypothesized that passenger vehicle rides simulating a rush-hour commute would cause measurable acute changes in biomarkers of airway oxidative stress among healthy volunteers. Methods. Twenty nonsmoking subjects aged 18-45 were passengers in a Ford Taurus sedan for two 2-hr car rides. The route was primarily on a major highway with heavy diesel truck traffic with the car’s external air intake open. Subjects wore a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) (‘Air-Mate,’ 3M) during all car rides. In randomized order at least one week apart, each subject had one ride with, and one ride without, a HEPA filter in place in the PAPR. Subjects were blinded to the presence of the filter. In-vehicle measurements included total particle count, PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide. We collected exhaled breath condensate (EBC) with an Ecoscreen® device before and 0, 6 and 24 hr after each ride. We measured the concentration of EBC nitrite and nitrite + nitrate, markers of nitrosative stress, using chemiluminescence detection, and EBC malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative stress, using HPLC with fluorescence detection. To date, 12 subjects have completed the protocol with samples analyzed. Results The filter reduced particle counts by >99%. We found a significant 2-fold increase in mean nitrite+nitrate in EBC collected immediately following the car rides without HEPA filtration compared to the rides with HEPA filtration, as well as non-significant increases in nitrite and MDA. The increases did not persist at 6 hr and 24 hr after the car ride. Conclusions These results suggest that the PM exposure during car rides in heavy diesel truck traffic causes acute increases in oxidative/nitrosative stress in the respiratory tract.

Abstract:A variety of single pollutant and multipollutant metrics can be used to represent exposure to traffic pollutant mixtures and evaluate their health effects. Integrated mobile source indicators (IMSIs) that combine air quality concentration and emissions data have recently been developed and evaluated using data from Atlanta, Georgia. IMSIs were found to track trends in traffic-related pollutants and have similar or stronger associations with health outcomes. In the current work, we apply IMSIs for gasoline, diesel and total (gasoline + diesel) vehicles to two other cities (Denver, Colorado and Houston, Texas) with different emissions profiles as well as to a different dataset from Atlanta. We compare spatial and temporal variability of IMSIs to single-pollutant indicators (carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and elemental carbon (EC)) and multipollutant source apportionment factors produced by Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). Across cities, PMF-derived and IMSI gasoline metrics were most strongly correlated with CO (r = 0.31–0.98), while multipollutant diesel metrics were most strongly correlated with EC (r = 0.80–0.98). NOx correlations with PMF factors varied across cities (r = 0.29–0.67), while correlations with IMSIs were relatively consistent (r = 0.61–0.94). In general, single-pollutant metrics were more correlated with IMSIs (r = 0.58–0.98) than with PMF-derived factors (r = 0.07–0.99). A spatial analysis indicated that IMSIs were more strongly correlated (r > 0.7) between two sites in each city than single pollutant and PMF factors. These findings provide confidence that IMSIs provide a transferable, simple approach to estimate mobile source air pollution in cities with differing topography and source profiles using readily available data.

The route was primarily on the New Jersey Turnpike, a major highway with heavy duty diesel truck traffic. In-vehicle exposure measurements included total particle count, particulate matter less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide, temperature, and humidity. We collected exhaled breath condensate (EBC) using an Ecoscreen device before and 0, 6, and 24 hours after the car rides. We measured the concentration of EBC nitrite, a marker of nitrosative stress, using chemiluminescence detection, and EBC malondialdehyde, a marker oxidative stress, with HPLC with fluorescence detection. Results: Mean particle counts were significantly higher during the vent open rides compared to recirculation mode rides (43,653 vs. 26,362 p/cc, P = 0.03). Among these 4 subjects over 8 car rides, we have observed a 22% increase in EBC MDA from pre- to 0 hour post-ride (95% CI: −24%, 68%), which did not persist at 6-hour post-ride. Conclusion: Having the vent closed substantially reduced total particle counts in the vehicle. To date, these short-term, on-road exposures in traffic were associated with increased oxidative stress in the respiratory tract of healthy humans.

Abstract:Worldwide, there is an increasing uptake of traffic management interventions aimed at reducing the impact of traffic related air pollution on public health. However, the evidence base linking the proposed changes with the resulting improvements in air quality is lacking. In this paper we present data from a micro-network of low-cost PM10 samplers collected from an isolated urban centre (Auckland, New Zealand). The data was then analysed using a new combination of analytical methods aimed to identify the composition and hence, the source of pollution. Whilst across the three sites mass concentration of PM10 and black carbon were similar, Raman spectroscopy successfully identified variations in the soot composition at different sites, enabling some particulate matter to be linked to diesel vehicle emissions. A mass reconstruction approach proved useful in determining that the airshed is well-mixed and also highlighted the impacts of urban design on recorded concentrations. The results show that networks of low-cost sensors, combined with the range of analytical techniques used here can help policymakers test the efficacy of interventions and management strategies designed to combat the burden of air pollution on public health.

Abstract:BackgroundFor many individuals, daily commuting activities on roadways account for a substantial proportion of total exposure, as well as peak-level exposures, to traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPS) including ultrafine particles, but the health impacts of these exposures are not well-understood. We sought to determine if exposure to TRAPs particles during commuting causes acute oxidative stress in the respiratory tract or changes in heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of autonomic activity.MethodsWe conducted a randomized, cross-over trial in which twenty-one young adults took two 1.5-hr rides in a passenger vehicle in morning rush-hour traffic. The subjects wore a powered-air-purifying respirator, and were blinded to high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration during one of the rides. At time points before and after the rides, we measured HRV and markers of oxidative stress in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) including nitrite, the sum of nitrite and nitrate, malondialdehyde, and 8-isoprostane. We used mixed linear models to evaluate the effect of exposure on EBC and HRV outcomes, adjusting for pre-exposure response levels. We used linear models to examine the effects of particle concentrations on EBC outcomes at post-exposure time points.ResultsMean EBC nitrite and the sum of nitrite and nitrate were increased from baseline at immediately post-exposure comparing unfiltered to filtered rides (2.11 μM vs 1.70 μM, p = 0.02 and 19.1 μM vs 10.0 μM, p = 0.02, respectively). Mean EBC malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations were about 10% greater following the unfiltered vs. filtered exposures, although this result was not statistically significant. We found no significant associations between exposure to traffic particles and HRV outcomes at any of the time points. At immediately post-exposure, an interquartile range increase in particle number concentration was associated with statistically significant increases in nitrite (99.4%, 95% CI 32.1% to 166.7%) and nitrite + nitrate (75.7%, 95% CI 21.5% to 130.0%).ConclusionsIncreases in markers of oxidative stress in EBC may represent early biological responses to widespread exposures to TRAPs particles that affect passengers in vehicles on heavily trafficked roadways.

Abstract:People driving in a vehicle might receive an enhanced dose of mobile source pollutants that are considered a potential risk for cardiovascular diseases. The exposure to components of air pollution in highway patrol vehicles, at an ambient, and a roadside location was determined during 25 work shifts (3 p.m. to midnight) in the autumn of 2001, each day with two cars. A global positioning system and a diary provided location and activity information. Average pollutant levels inside the cars were low compared to ambient air quality standards: carbon monoxide 2.7 ppm, nitrogen dioxide 41.7 microg/m3, ozone 11.7 ppb, particulate matter smaller 2.5 microm (PM2.5) 24 microg/m3. Volatile organic compounds inside the cars were in the ppb-range and showed the fingerprint of gasoline. PM2.5 was 24% lower than ambient and roadside levels, probably due to depositions associated with the recirculating air conditioning. Levels of carbon monoxide, aldehydes, hydrocarbons, and some metals (Al, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Sr) were highest in the cars, and roadside levels were higher than ambient levels. Elevated pollutant levels were related to locations with high traffic volumes. Our results point to combustion engine emissions from other vehicles as important sources of air pollutants inside the car.

Abstract:Mobile monitoring provides high-resolution observation on temporal and spatial scales compared to traditional fixed-site measurement. This study demonstrates the use of high spatio-temporal resolution of air pollution data collected by Google Air View vehicles to identify hotspots and assess compliance with WHO Air Quality Guidelines (AQGs) in Dublin City. The mobile monitoring was conducted during weekdays, typically from 7:00 to 19:00, between 6 May 2021 and 6 May 2022. One-second data were aggregated to 377,113 8 s road segments, and 8 s rolling medians were aggregated to hourly and daily levels for further analysis. We assessed the temporal variability of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), nitrogen monoxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), ozone (O 3 ), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) concentrations at hyperlocal levels. The average daytime median concentrations of NO 2 (28.4 ± 15.7 μg/m 3 ) and PM 2.5 (7.6 ± 4.7 μg/m 3 ) exceeded the WHO twenty-four hours (24 h) Air Quality Guidelines in 49.4% and 9% of the 1-year sampling time, respectively. For the diurnal variation of measured pollutants, the morning (8:00) and early evening (18:00) showed higher concentrations for NO 2 and PM 2.5 , mostly happening in the winter season, while the afternoon is the least polluted time except for O 3 . The low-percentile approach along with 1-h and daytime minima method allowed for decomposing pollutant time series into the background and local contributions. Background contributions for NO 2 and PM 2.5 changed along with the seasonal variation. Local contributions for PM 2.5 changed slightly; however, NO 2 showed significant diurnal and seasonal variability related to traffic emissions. Short-lived event enhancement (1 min to 1 h) accounts for 36.0–40.6% and 20.8–42.2% of the total concentration for NO 2 and PM 2.5 . The highly polluted days account for 56.3% of total NO 2 , highlighting local traffic is the dominant contributor to short-term NO 2 concentrations. The longer-lived events (> 8 h) enhancement accounts for 25% of the monitored concentrations. Additionally, conducting optimal hotspot analysis enables mapping the spatial distribution of "hot" spots for PM 2.5 and NO 2 on highly polluted days. Overall, this investigation suggests both background and local emissions contribute to PM 2.5 and NO 2 pollution in urban areas and emphasize the urgent need for mitigating NO 2 from traffic pollution in Dublin.

Abstract:1. At least two components of neuraminidase can be distinguished on the basis of thermolability and sedimentability by using the artificial fluorogenic substrate 4-methylumbelliferyl N-acetyl-alpha-D-neuraminate. 2. In crude homogenates, thermodenaturation at 25 degrees C showed a biphasic curve corresponding to component A (half-life, 21 min) and B (half-life, 85 min). The two components were partially resolved by centrifugation. A being soluble and B sedimentable. Both had similar pH-activity curves (pH optimum, 4.4), Km values (A, 0.10 mM; B, 0.06 mM) and molecular weight as determined by radiation inactivation (A, 67000; B, 63000). 3. The soluble A form was still aggregated or bound to membranous debris since almost all neuraminidase activity was eluted near or at the void volume of a Sephacryl S-300 column. 4. Both soluble and sedimentable fractions of placenta hydrolysed the GD1A ganglioside and N-acetyl-neuraminyl-D-lactose linearly for 12 h but no fetuin hydrolysis was detected. 5. The neuraminidase activity with the artificial fluorogenic substrate was inhibited by N-acetylneuraminyl-D-lactose but not by the GD1A ganglioside. These preliminary results suggest that there exist two closely related enzymes hydrolysing both the artificial substrate and N-acetylneuraminyl-D-lactose and a third one hydrolysing the GD1A ganglioside exclusively.

Abstract:Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) data of similar continuously monitored species at two air monitoring sites with different characteristics within the City of Toronto were used to gauge the intra-city variations in the PM composition over a largely concurrent period spanning two years. One location was <8 m from the side of a major highway while the other was an urban background location. For the first time, multi-time resolution factor analysis was applied to dispersion-normalized concentrations to identify and quantify source contributions while reducing the influence of local meteorology. These factors were particulate sulphate (pSO4), particulate nitrate (pNO3), secondary organic aerosols (SOA), crustal matter (CrM) that were common to both sites, a hydrocarbon-like organic matter (HOM) exclusive to the urban background site, three black carbon related factors (BC, BC-HOM at the highway site, and a brown carbon rich factor (BC-BrC) at the urban background site), biomass burning organic matter (BBOM) and brake dust (BD) factors exclusive to the highway site. The PM2.5 composition was different between these two locations, over only a 10 km distance. The sum of SOA, pSO4 and pNO3 at the urban background site averaged 57% of the PM2.5 mass while the same species represented 43% of the average PM2.5 mass at the highway site. Local or site-specific factors may be of greater interest for control policy design. Thus, regression analyses with potential explanatory, site-specific variables were performed for results from the highway site. Three model approaches were explored: multiple linear regression (MLR), regression with a generalized reduced gradient (GRG) algorithm, and a generalized additive model (GAM). GAM gave the largest fraction of variance for the locally-found factors at the highway site. Heavy-duty vehicles were most important for explaining the black carbon (BC and BC-HOM) factors. Light-duty vehicles were dominant for the brake dust (BD) factor. The auxiliary modelling for the local factors showed that the traffic-related factors likely originated along the main roadways at their respective sites while the more regional factors, - pSO4, pNO3, SOA, - had sources that were both regional and local in origin and with contributions that varied seasonally. These results will be useful in understanding ambient particulate matter sources on a city scale that will support air quality management planning.

Abstract:Traffic‐related air pollutants inside vehicle cabins are often extremely high compared to background pollution concentrations. The study of the determinants of these concentrations is particularly important for professional drivers and commuters who spend long periods in vehicles. This study is aimed at identifying and quantifying the effect of several exposure determinants on carbon monoxide (CO), equivalent black carbon (eBC), two particulate matter (PM) fractions (PM0.3–1 and PM1–2.5), and ultrafine particle (UFP) concentrations inside a passenger car cabin. The novelty of this work consists in examining the effects of the emissions of the first vehicle ahead (henceforth called "leading vehicle") on pollutant concentrations inside the cabin of the following vehicle (i.e., the car that was equipped with the air monitoring devices), with particular emphasis on the role of the leading vehicle characteristics (e.g., emission reduction technologies). The real‐time instrumentation was placed inside the cabin of a petrol passenger car, which was driven by the same operator two times per day on the same route in real driving conditions. The in‐cabin ventilation settings were set as follows: windows closed, air conditioning and recirculation modes off, and the fanned ventilation system on. The measurements were conducted over a total of 10 weekdays during two different seasons (i.e., summer and autumn). A video camera fixed to the windscreen was used to retrieve information about traffic conditions and leading vehicle characteristics through careful video analysis. The associations among pollutant concentrations and their potential determinants were evaluated using generalized estimating equation univariate and multiple models. The results confirmed the significant impact of several well‐known determinants such as seasonality, microclimatic parameters, traffic jam situations, and route characteristics. Moreover, the outcomes shed light on the key role of leading vehicle emissions as determinant factors of the pollutant concentrations inside car cabins. Indeed, in the tested cabin ventilation conditions, it was demonstrated that in‐cabin pollutant concentrations were significantly higher with leading vehicles ahead (from +14.6% to +67.5%) compared to empty road conditions, even though the introduction of newer technologies with better emissions reduction helped mitigate their effect. Additionally, diesel‐fuelled leading vehicles compared to petrol‐fuelled leading vehicles were impactful on in‐cabin CO (−7.2%) and eBC (+45.3%) concentrations. An important effect (+30.4%) on in‐vehicle PM1–2.5 concentrations was found with heavy‐duty compared to light‐duty leading vehicles. Finally, this research pointed out that road‐scale factors are more important determinant factors of in‐cabin concentrations than local pollution and meteorological conditions.

Abstract:The Denver Aerosol Sources and Health (DASH) study was designed to evaluate associations between PM2.5 species and sources and adverse human health effects. The DASH study generated a five-year (2003-2007) time series of daily speciated PM2.5 concentration measurements from a single, special-purpose monitoring site in Denver, CO. To evaluate the ability of this site to adequately represent the short term temporal variability of PM2.5 concentrations in the five county Denver metropolitan area, a one year supplemental set of PM2.5 samples was collected every sixth day at the original DASH monitoring site and concurrently at three additional sites. Two of the four sites, including the original DASH site, were located in residential areas at least 1.9 km from interstate highways. The other two sites were located within 0.3 km of interstate highways. Concentrations of elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), and 58 organic molecular markers were measured at each site. To assess spatial variability, site pairs were compared using the Pearson correlation coefficient (r) and coefficient of divergence (COD), a statistic that provides information on the degree of uniformity between monitoring sites. Bi-weekly co-located samples collected from July 2004 to September 2005 were also analyzed and used to estimate the uncertainty associated with sampling and analytical measurement for each species. In general, the two near-highway sites exhibited higher concentrations of EC, OC, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and steranes than did the more residential sites. Lower spatial heterogeneity based on r and COD was inferred for all carbonaceous species after considering their divergence and lack of perfect correlations in co-located samples. Ratio ratio plots combined with available gasoline- and diesel-powered motor vehicle emissions profiles for the region suggested a greater impact to high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs from diesel-powered vehicles at the near-highway sites and a more uniformly distributed impact to ambient hopanes from gasoline-powered motor vehicles at all four sites. Abstract:We study the effect of spatial frequency forcing on standing-wave solutions of coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations. The model considered describes several situations of nonlinear counterpropagating waves and also of the dynamics of polarized light waves. We show that forcing introduces spatial modulations on standing waves which remain frequency locked with a forcing-independent frequency. For forcing above a threshold the modulated standing waves unlock, bifurcating into a temporally periodic state. Below the threshold the system presents a kind of excitability.

Abstract:With urbanization and increased vehicle usage, understanding the exposure to air pollutants inside the vehicles is vital for developing strategies to mitigate associated health risks. In-vehicle air quality influences the comfort of the driver during long commutes and has gained significant interest. This study focuses on studying in-vehicle air quality in the San Francisco Bay Area in California, an urban setting with significant traffic congestion and varied emission sources and road conditions. Each trip is about 80.5 km (50 miles) in length, with commute times of approximately one hour. Two low-cost portable sensors were employed to simultaneously measure in-vehicle pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, and CO2) during morning and evening rush hours from May 2023 to December 2023. Seasonally averaged PM2.5 varied from 5.07 μg/m3 to 6.55 μg/m3 during morning rush hours and from 4.38 μg/m3 to 4.47 μg/m3 during evening rush hours. In addition, the impacts of local PM2.5, vehicle ventilation settings, and speed of the vehicle on in-vehicle PM concentrations were also analyzed. CO2 buildup in vehicles was studied for two scenarios: one with inside recirculation enabled (RC on) and the other with circulation from outside (RC off). With RC off, CO2 concentrations are largely within the 1100 ppm range recommended by many organizations, while the average CO2 concentrations can be three times high under recirculation mode. This research suggests that low-cost sensors can provide valuable insights into the dynamics of air pollution in the in-vehicle microenvironment, which can better help commuters reduce health risks.

Abstract:Regulation has been applied to the fine particles (PM2.5) but not to particle number concentrations (PNC). We use a mobile platform to measure PNC and PM2.5 in four microenvironments (diesel plume, urban freeway, urban street, and rural freeway). A total of 38661 pairs of measurements in two years (winter 2018 and autumn 2020) are used to evaluate variability in the pollutant concentrations and their interrelationships. Source-discerned total PNC (PNCtot) and temporaladjusted PM2.5 ( increment PM2.5) are calculated and evaluated. Results showed that the average PNCtot in winter (4.8 x 104 pt cm-3) were over two times higher than autumn (0.36 x 104-0.56 x 104 pt cm-3). Moreover, the traffic emissions (PNCd,tr) contribute 30% of the PNC throughout the study while solid fuel burning (PNCd,sfb) could be a major contributor only in winter (29%). Seasonal variability in PNCd,tr and PNCd,sfb was found, with 2-3 times higher median PNCd,tr and 7 times higher median PNCd,sfb in winter compared to autumn. Similarly, PM2.5 in winter (109 & mu;g m-3) was 3-5 times higher than autumn, while increment PM2.5 (40 & mu;g m-3) was 3-6 times higher. In winter, the PM2.5 and increment PM2.5 showed higher concentrations in urban street and rural freeway similar to PNCd,sfb but opposite to the trend of PNCtot and PNCd,tr. The correlation coefficient (R2) is investigated as three combinations (i.e., PNCtot vs. PM2.5, PNCd,tr vs. increment PM2.5, PNCd,sfb vs. increment PM2.5). Here, the R2 showed a comparable seasonal trend (winter lower than autumn) and similar magnitude as the literature, but no strong correlation (R2 < 0.15) was found. This stresses the fact that mitigation measures of PM2.5 do not necessarily reduce PNC and monitoring networks evaluate PM2.5 exposure are unlikely to represent PNC exposure. The concentration ratios in the three combinations are found to vary with microenvironments and seasons. This variability implies that control policies should be diversified with pollutant types and energy usage of the city.

Abstract:In most major cities of China, commuters inevitably spend a considerable amount of time in vehicle cabins due to the escalation of traffic congestion and a rapidly increasing vehicle population. The in-vehicle microenvironment that is in close proximity to traffic emission sources is at particular risk of increased exposure to traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs). In this study, a mobile measurement campaign was carried out to investigate in-vehicle exposure to TRAPs in China where the elevated level of TRAPs has drawn worldwide attention in recent years. Our analysis demonstrates that vehicle ventilation mode (i.e., mechanical ventilation, natural ventilation, hybrid ventilation, and infiltration) played a critical role in determining the level of in-vehicle exposure. Although the outside air (OA) mode of mechanical ventilation provided adequate air exchange to passengers, the average in-vehicle PM2.5 and UFP concentrations (119 mu g/m(3) and 97,227 cm(-3) on freeway, and 93 mu g/m(3) and 42,829 cm(-3) on local roadway) during a 20-min sampling period were observed at the level that are markedly greater than those from studies conducted in the U.S., posing a serious health threat to vehicle occupants. We elaborated how our results collected in China with a significantly more polluted on-road environment differ from existing studies in terms of ventilation and driving conditions. In addition, we made the first effort to examine in-vehicle exposure under hybrid ventilation that is a common ventilation practice in everyday commute to potentially reduce symptoms similar to sick building syndrome (SBS). Our data indicate that vehicle occupants under hybrid ventilation are at much greater risk of TRAPs exposure if operating in a polluted on-road environment, and we call for future research on automated ventilation system with advanced window control especially for vans and buses with a large cabin volume.
