Abstract:Experiments performed within the last year have demonstrated Rydberg state mediated quantum gates and deterministic entanglement between pairs of trapped neutral atoms. These experiments validate ten year old proposals for Rydberg mediated quantum logic, but are only the beginning of ongoing efforts to improve the fidelity of the results obtained and scale the experiments to larger numbers of qubits. We present here a summary of the results to date, along with a critical evaluation of the prospects for higher fidelity Rydberg gates.

Abstract:The neutral atom platform has become an attractive choice to study the science of quantum information and quantum simulation, where intense efforts have been devoted to the entangling processes between individual atoms. A two-qubit controlled- phase gate via Rydberg blockade is one of the most essential elements. Recent theoretical studies have suggested the advantages of introducing nontrivial waveform modulation into the gate protocol, which is anticipated to improve its performance towards the next stage. We report our recent experimental results in realizing the two-qubit controlled- phase ( CZ ) gate via single-modulated-pulse off-resonant modulated driving embedded in a two-photon transition for Rb atoms. It relies on a global driving laser pulse with a carefully calculated smooth waveform to gain the appropriate phase accumulations required by CZ gate. Combining this CZ gate with global microwave pulses, two-atom entanglement is generated with the raw fidelity of 0.945(6). After accounting for state preparation and measurement errors, we extract the entanglement operation fidelity to be 0.980(7). Our work features completing the CZ gate operation within a single pulse to avoid shelved population in the Rydberg levels, thus demonstrating another promising route for realizing a high-fidelity two-qubit gate for the neutral atom platform. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.105.042430 ©2022 American Physical Society
Fast, Accurate, and Realizable Two-Qubit Entangling Gates by Quantum Interference in Detuned Rabi Cycles of Rydberg Atoms

Abstract:High-fidelity entangling quantum gates based on Rydberg interactions are required for scalable quantum computing with neutral atoms. Their realization, however, meets a major stumbling block -- the motion-induced dephasing of the transition between the ground and Rydberg states. By using quantum interference between different detuned Rabi oscillations, we propose a practical scheme to realize a class of accurate entangling Rydberg quantum gates subject to a minimal dephasing error. We show two types of such gates, $U_{1}$ and $U_{2}$, in the form of $\text{diag}\{1, e^{i\alpha}, e^{i\gamma}, e^{i\beta}\}$, where $\alpha, \gamma$, and $\beta$ are determined by the parameters of lasers and the Rydberg blockade $V$. $U_{1}$ is realized by sending to the two qubits a single off-resonant laser pulse, while $U_{2}$ is realized by individually applying one pulse of detuned laser to each qubit. Our method has several advantages. First, the gates are accurate because the fidelity of $U_k$ is limited only by a rotation error below $10^{-5}$ and the Rydberg-state decay. Decay error on the order of $10^{-5}$ can be easily obtained because all transitions are detuned, resulting in small population in Rydberg state. Second, the motion-induced dephasing is minimized because there is no gap time in which a population is left in the Rydberg shelving states of either qubit. Third, the gate is resilient to the variation of $V$. This is because among the three phases $\alpha,\gamma$, and $\beta$, only the last has a (partial) dependence on $V$. Fourth, the Rabi frequency and $V$ in our scheme are of similar magnitude, which permits a fast implementation of the gate when both of them are of the feasible magnitude of several megahertz. The rapidity, accuracy, and feasibility of this interference method can lay the foundation for entangling gates in universal quantum computing with neutral atoms.

Abstract:The ability to perform entangling quantum operations with low error rates in a scalable fashion is a central element of useful quantum information processing. Neutral atom arrays have recently emerged as a promising quantum computing platform, featuring coherent control over hundreds of qubits and any-to-any gate connectivity in a flexible, dynamically reconfigurable architecture. The major outstanding challenge has been to reduce errors in entangling operations mediated through Rydberg interactions. Here we report the realization of two-qubit entangling gates with 99.5% fidelity on up to 60 atoms in parallel, surpassing the surface code threshold for error correction. Our method employs fast single-pulse gates based on optimal control, atomic dark states to reduce scattering, and improvements to Rydberg excitation and atom cooling. We benchmark fidelity using several methods based on repeated gate applications, characterize the physical error sources, and outline future improvements. Finally, we generalize our method to design entangling gates involving a higher number of qubits, which we demonstrate by realizing low-error three-qubit gates. By enabling high-fidelity operation in a scalable, highly connected system, these advances lay the groundwork for large-scale implementation of quantum algorithms, error-corrected circuits, and digital simulations.

Abstract:We investigate the robustness of two-qubit gates to deviations of experimental controls, on a neutral atom platform utilizing Rydberg states. We construct robust CZ gates - employing techniques from quantum optimal control - that retain high Bell state fidelity $F > 0.999$ in the presence of significant deviations of the coupling strength to the Rydberg state. Such deviations can arise from laser intensity noise and atomic motion in an inhomogeneous coupling field. We also discuss methods to mitigate errors due to deviations of the laser detuning. The designed pulses operate on timescales that are short compared to the fundamental decay timescale set by spontaneous emission and blackbody radiation. We account for the finite lifetime of the Rydberg state in both the optimisation and fidelity calculations - this makes the gates conducive to noisy intermediate-scale quantum experiments, meaning that our protocols can reduce infidelity on near-term quantum computing devices. We calculate physical properties associated with infidelity for strontium-88 atoms - including lifetimes, polarisabilities and blockade strengths - and use these calculations to identify optimal Rydberg states for our protocols, which allows for further minimisation of infidelity.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to prepare the Bell states for atomic qubits trapped in separate optical cavities via atom-cavity-laser interaction. The quantum information of each qubit is encoded on the degenerate ground states of the atom, so the entanglement between them is relatively stable against spontaneous emission. The proposed scheme consists of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with two arms, and each arm contains a cavity with an N-type atom in it. It requires two classical fields and a single-photon source. By controlling the sequence and time of atom-cavity-laser interaction, the deterministic production of the atomic Bell states is shown. We also introduce the generalization of the present scheme to generate the 2N-atom Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state.

Abstract:We report the implementation of universal two- and three-qubit entangling gates on neutral-atom qubits encoded in long-lived hyperfine ground states. The gates are mediated by excitation to strongly interacting Rydberg states and are implemented in parallel on several clusters of atoms in a one-dimensional array of optical tweezers. Specifically, we realize the controlled-phase gate, enacted by a novel, fast protocol involving only global coupling of two qubits to Rydberg states. We benchmark this operation by preparing Bell states with fidelity F≥95.0(2)%, and extract gate fidelity ≥97.4(3)%, averaged across five atom pairs. In addition, we report a proof-of-principle implementation of the three-qubit Toffoli gate, in which two control atoms simultaneously constrain the behavior of one target atom. These experiments demonstrate key ingredients for high-fidelity quantum information processing in a scalable neutral-atom platform.

Abstract:We report on the first experimental realization of the controlled-not (cnot) quantum gate and entanglement for two individual atoms of different isotopes and demonstrate a negligible cross talk between two atom qubits. The experiment is based on a strong Rydberg blockade for ^{87}Rb and ^{85}Rb atoms confined in two single-atom optical traps separated by 3.8 μm. The raw fidelities of the cnot gate and entanglement are 0.73±0.01 and 0.59±0.03, respectively, without any corrections for atom loss or trace loss. Our work has applications for simulations of many-body systems with multispecies interactions, for quantum computing, and for quantum metrology.

Abstract:Rydberg atom arrays have emerged as a leading platform for quantum information science. Reaching system sizes of hundreds of long-lived qubits, these arrays are used for highly coherent analog quantum simulation, as well as digital quantum computation. Advanced quantum protocols such as quantum error correction, however, require midcircuit qubit operations, including the replenishment, reset, and readout of a subset of qubits. A compelling strategy to achieve these capabilities is a dual-species architecture in which a second atomic species can be controlled without crosstalk, and entangled with the first via Rydberg interactions. Here, we realize a dual-species Rydberg array consisting of rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs) atoms, and explore new regimes of interactions and dynamics not accessible in single-species architectures. We achieve enhanced interspecies interactions by electrically tuning the Rydberg states close to a Forster resonance. In this regime, we demonstrate interspecies Rydberg blockade and implement quantum state transfer from one species to another. We then generate a Bell state between Rb and Cs hyperfine qubits via an interspecies controlled-phase gate. Finally, we combine interspecies entanglement with native midcircuit readout to achieve quantum non-demolition measurement of a Rb qubit using an auxiliary Cs qubit. The techniques demonstrated here pave the way toward scalable measurement-based protocols and real-time feedback control in large-scale quantum systems.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement is crucial for simulating and understanding exotic physics of strongly correlated many-body systems, such as high--temperature superconductors, or fractional quantum Hall states. The entanglement of non-identical particles exhibits richer physics of strong many-body correlations and offers more opportunities for quantum computation, especially with neutral atoms where in contrast to ions the interparticle interaction is widely tunable by Feshbach resonances. Moreover, the inter-species entanglement forms a basis for the properties of various compound systems, ranging from Bose-Bose mixtures to photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes. So far, the inter-species entanglement has only been obtained for trapped ions. Here we report on the experimental realization of entanglement of two neutral atoms of different isotopes. A ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atom and a ${}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ atom are confined in two single--atom optical traps separated by 3.8 $\mu$m. Creating a strong Rydberg blockade, we demonstrate a heteronuclear controlled--NOT (C--NOT) quantum gate and generate a heteronuclear entangled state, with raw fidelities $0.73 \pm 0.01$ and $0.59 \pm 0.03$, respectively. Our work, together with the technologies of single--qubit gate and C--NOT gate developed for identical atoms, can be used for simulating any many--body system with multi-species interactions. It also has applications in quantum computing and quantum metrology, since heteronuclear systems exhibit advantages in low crosstalk and in memory protection.

Abstract:Rydberg atom arrays are a leading platform for quantum computing and simulation, combining strong interactions with highly coherent operations and flexible geometries. However, the achievable fidelities are limited by the finite lifetime of the Rydberg states, as well as technical imperfections such as atomic motion. In this work, we propose a novel approach to Rydberg atom arrays using long-lived circular Rydberg states in optical traps. Based on the extremely long lifetime of these states, exceeding seconds in cryogenic microwave cavities that suppress radiative transitions, and gate protocols that are robust to finite atomic temperature, we project that arrays of hundreds of circular Rydberg atoms with two-qubit gate errors around $10^{-5}$ can be realized using current technology. This approach combines several key elements, including a quantum nondemolition detection technique for circular Rydberg states, local manipulation using the ponderomotive potential of focused optical beams, a gate protocol using multiple circular levels to encode qubits, and robust dynamical decoupling sequences to suppress unwanted interactions and errors from atomic motion. This represents a significant improvement on the current state-of-the-art in quantum computing and simulation with neutral atoms.

Fast entangling gates for Rydberg atoms via resonant dipole-dipole interaction

Abstract:The advent of digital neutral-atom quantum computers relies on the development of fast and robust protocols for high-fidelity quantum operations. In this work, we introduce a novel scheme for entangling gates using four atomic levels per atom: a ground state qubit and two Rydberg states. A laser field couples the qubit to one of the two Rydberg states, while a microwave field coupling the two Rydberg states enables a resonant dipole-dipole interaction between different atoms. We show that this interaction can mediate controlled-Z gates that are faster and less sensitive to Rydberg decay than state-of-the-art Rydberg gates based on van der Waals interactions. Moreover, we systematically stabilize our protocol against interatomic distance fluctuations and analyze its performance in realistic setups with rubidium or cesium atoms. Our results open up new avenues to the use of dipolar interactions for universal quantum computation with neutral atoms.

Abstract:The Rydberg blockade is a key ingredient for entangling atoms in arrays. However, it requires atoms to be spaced well within the blockade radius, which limits the range of local quantum gates. Here we break this constraint using Floquet frequency modulation, with which we demonstrate Rydberg-blockade entanglement beyond the traditional blockade radius and show how the enlarged entanglement range improves qubit connectivity in a neutral atom array. Further, we find that the coherence of entangled states can be extended under Floquet frequency modulation. Finally, we realize Rydberg anti-blockade states for two sodium Rydberg atoms within the blockade radius. Such Rydberg anti-blockade states for atoms at close range enables the robust preparation of strongly-interacting, long-lived Rydberg states, yet their steady-state population cannot be achieved with only the conventional static drive. Our work transforms between the paradigmatic regimes of Rydberg blockade versus anti-blockade and paves the way for realizing more connected, coherent, and tunable neutral atom quantum processors with a single approach.

Abstract:By controlling the temporal and spatial features of light, we propose a novel protocol to prepare two-qubit entangling gates on atoms trapped at close distance, which could potentially speed up the operation of the gate from the sub-micro to the nanosecond scale. The protocol is robust to variations in the pulse areas and the position of the atoms, by virtue of the coherent properties of a dark state, which is used to drive the population through Rydberg states. From the time-domain perspective, the protocol generalizes the one proposed by Jaksch and coworkers [Jaksch et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2208 (2000)], with three pulses that operate symmetrically in time, but with different pulse areas. From the spatial-domain perspective, it uses structured light. We analyze the map of the gate fidelity, which forms rotated and distorted lattices in the solution space. Finally, we study the effect of an additional qubit to the gate performance and propose generalizations that operate with multi-pulse sequences.

Abstract:We introduce a novel family of protocols for entangling gates for neutral atom qubits based on the Rydberg blockade mechanism. These protocols realize controlled-phase gates through a series of global laser pulses that are on resonance with the Rydberg excitation frequency. We analyze these protocols with respect to their robustness against calibration errors of the Rabi frequency or shot-to-shot laser intensity fluctuations, and show that they display robustness in various fidelity measures. In addition, we discuss adaptations of these protocols in order to make them robust to atomic-motion-induced Doppler shifts as well.

Abstract:For neutral-atom qubits, two-qubit gates are typically realized via the Rydberg-blockade effect, which hints at the special status of Rydberg levels compared with regular qubit register states. However, the experimental and theoretical studies that have been done to reveal how the ground-Rydberg coherence of the control-qubit atom affects the fidelity of a two-qubit gate are not yet adequate, especially when all experimental two-qubit gates feature a single atom that stays in the Rydberg state for a certain time. Here, we perform a careful investigation of decoherence in ground-Rydberg transitions in a single atom with various pulse sequences. In particular, based on the commonly used controlled- Z ( CZ ) gate sequence proposed by D. Jaksch et al. , Phys. Rev. Lett. 85 , 2208 (2000), we observe that a control-qubit atom subject to a two-qubit entangling process with the H - CZ controlled- not gate scheme experiences a process that is essentially similar to ground-Rydberg Ramsey interference. Then, we build a straightforward theoretical model to link the decoherence time τgr of the control qubit (extracted from Ramsey fringes of the ground-Rydberg transition) to this CZ pulse sequence, and also analyze the typical origins of decoherence effects. Finally, we discuss the loss of fidelity of the CZ gate due to the limits imposed by the ground-Rydberg coherence properties, and the prospect of improving fidelity with refined gate protocols. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.15.054020 © 2021 American Physical Society

Abstract:Quantum gates and entanglement based on dipole-dipole interactions of neutral Rydberg atoms are relevant to both fundamental physics and quantum information science. The precision and robustness of the Rydberg-mediated entanglement protocols are the key factors limiting their applicability in experiments and near-future industry. There are various methods for generating entangling gates by exploring the Rydberg interactions of neutral atoms, each equipped with its own strengths and weaknesses. The basics and tricks in these protocols are reviewed, with specific attention paid to the achievable fidelity and the robustness to the technical issues and detrimental innate factors.

Erasing Doppler Dephasing Error in Rydberg Quantum Gates

Abstract:The Doppler dephasing error due to residual thermal motion of qubit atoms is a major cause of fidelity loss in neutral-atom quantum gates. Besides cooling and trapping advancements, few effective methods exist to mitigate this error. In the present work, we introduce an error-erasing strategy that utilizes a pair of off-resonant fields to continuously dress the protected Rydberg state with an auxiliary state, which induces an opposite but enhanced sensitivity to the same source of Doppler dephasing error. Combining with an optimal control of laser pulses, we realize a family of Rydberg two-qubit controlled-NOT gates in Rb and Cs atoms that are fully robust to the Doppler dephasing error. We benchmark this gate operation with fidelity $F\approx0.9906$ at ${\it any}$ temperature for a lower-excited auxiliary state, and a higher fidelity of $F\approx0.9965$ can be attained for a ground-state auxiliary state at a temperature of 50 $\mu$K. Our results significantly reduce atomic temperature requirements for high-fidelity quantum gates, and may provide fundamental guidance to practical error-tolerant quantum computing with neutral atoms.

Enriching the quantum toolbox of ultracold molecules with Rydberg atoms

Abstract:We describe a quantum information architecture consisting of a hybrid array of optically-trapped molecules and atoms. This design leverages the large transition dipole moments of Rydberg atoms to mediate fast, high-fidelity gates between qubits encoded in coherent molecular degrees of freedom. Error channels of detuning, decay, pulse area noise, and leakage to other molecular states are discussed. The molecule-Rydberg interaction can also be used to enable nondestructive molecule detection and rotational state readout. We consider a specific near-term implementation of this scheme using NaCs molecules and Cs Rydberg atoms, showing that it is possible to implement 300~ns gates with a potential fidelity of $> 99.9\%$.
