Abstract:With the on-going boom in the construction of dam reservoirs all over the world, the sources and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in fluvial networks are expected to be altered. Considering the importance of DOM as a key biogeochemical component in inland waters, this might bring important ecological and environmental influences. However, limited information is available on the molecular composition of DOM in dam reservoirs. In this study, the spatial characteristics of DOM composition were investigated in Xiangxi tributary and mainstream of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), the largest freshwater reservoir in the world. The concentration alteration of conservative cations revealed the water intrusion from mainstream into Xiangxi tributary, which mainly controlled the hydrological gradient. One tyrosine-like (C4), one tryptophan-like (C2), and two humic-like (C1 and C3) fluorescent components were identified in fluorescent DOM (FDOM) by parallel factor analysis (PAFACAC), potentially indicating algal, anthropogenic, and terrestrial inputs, respectively. Decreasing trends of C1, C3 and C4 components and an increasing trend of C2 component were observed from Xiangxi tributary to mainstream, indicating higher terrestrial and algal inputs but lower anthropogenic inputs in Xiangxi tributary compared to mainstream. The Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) characterization further revealed substantial heterogeneity of DOM at the molecular level. Interestingly, S-containing compounds related to synthetic surfactants were consistently detected, and their relative abundances showed an increasing trend from Xiangxi tributary to mainstream, in agreement with the distribution of the anthropogenic derived C2 component. Meanwhile, numerous lignin-like S-containing compounds were identified, likely the result of the incorporation of sulfide ions to lignin-like CHO compounds. This study represents the first molecular level characterization of DOM in the TGR system, which should aid the design and implementation of more detailed future studies.
Characterizing Dissolved Organic Matter Across a Riparian Soil–Water Interface: Preliminary Insights from a Molecular Level Perspective

Abstract:Riparian soils are an important source of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to their connected rivers. The transport of DOM from riparian soils to rivers exerts a significant impact on both terrestrial and aquatic organic matter cycles. However, few studies focused on the underlying changes in DOM composition and potential biogeochemical processes involved. By combining optical techniques and Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), here we show the variation in molecular composition between DOM in the riparian soil (S-DOM), submerged soil (SS-DOM), and river water (R-DOM) along a typical tributary of the Yangtze River. Variations in relative inputs of humic- and aromatic-like sourced DOM (R-DOM > S-DOM > SS-DOM) and protein-like sourced DOM (SS-DOM > S-DOM > R-DOM) were observed at both optical and molecular levels, indicating significant alterations in DOM composition during its transport. In particular, we have identified two preliminary mechanisms of DOM transport from soils to rivers at the molecular level by FT-ICR MS: (i) lower molecular weight (MW) (344 +/- 9 Da in average) and moderate aromatic (modified aromaticity index; AI(mod): 0.28 +/- 0.01 in average) DOM compounds are released to the river without modifications; (ii) moderate MW (370 +/- 1 Da in average) and less aromatic (AI(mod) : 0.25 +/- 0.01 in average) DOM compounds are produced (likely due to transformation or degradation of higher MW and aromatic DOM) and released to the river. Further incubation experiments suggested that DOM compounds associated with the first mechanism were more refractory (both bio- and photoresistant) than those of the second one. Therefore, we speculate that the first mechanism likely relates to the DOM transportation to the downstream, but the second mechanism mainly contributes to the in situ CO2 emissions in rivers. Our results (i) highlight the variation in DOM composition across the soil-river interface; (ii) confirm the preferential mobilization of specific DOM compounds from soils to rivers; and (iii) provide an avenue for further investigation of the mechanisms responsible for the observed changes. In particular, further studies are encouraged to investigate the spatial and temporal dynamics of DOM transport along the terrestrial-aquatic-continuum with different sources or composition of organic matter and under different hydrological scenarios.
Anthropogenic Influences on Dissolved Organic Matter in Three Coastal Bays, North China

Abstract:Coastal bays bear anthropogenic influence strongly, and thus dissolved organic matter (DOM) in coastal bays, which is an important component of global carbon cycling, could be heavily affected by anthropogenic inputs. Utilizing absorbance, fluorescence spectroscopy, and stable carbon isotope (delta C-13), this study analyzed the characteristics and distribution of DOM in three coastal bays (Jiaozhou Bay, Sishili Bay, and Taozi Bay), located in North China. The results showed that there was always a high concentration of DOM near the river mouth in all three bays and the DOM concentration decreased along the salinity gradient in Jiaozhou Bay, indicating the riverine inputs are the main factor that causes the variation of DOM in these coastal bays. The effects of inflowing rivers on DOM in coastal bays differed with their watershed characteristics (i.e., agricultural/urban). In addition, humic-like DOM components were found to be positively correlated with the apparent oxygen utilization, suggesting microbial activities could contribute to the DOM in this region. There was generally a higher averaged concentration of fluorescent DOM in surface water than that in bottom water in Jiaozhou Bay. In contrast, higher humic-like DOM was found in bottom water than that in surface water in Sishili Bay and Taozi Bay, which could be attributed to aquaculture activities and biological production. Moreover, photodegradation/photobleaching, dumping, and sewage discharge had their effects on DOM in coastal bays. This study demonstrates that DOM in coastal bays is regulated by multiple sources (rivers, aquaculture, dumping, and sewage) and processes (biological production and photodegradation), and anthropogenic activities have their influences on optical and isotopic characteristics of DOM in coastal bays.

Abstract:Sources and molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in coastal rivers have been tightly linked with its reactivity and fate, thus influencing element and nutrient cycling. The DOM in coastal rivers is usually sourced from both terrestrial and marine inputs, with further complication by anthropogenic activities, which is less understood in coastal rivers located near populated industrial regions. In this study, DOM in a typical anthropogenically influenced coastal river, Daliao River, was analyzed for optical analyses and for molecular composition via Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) to give a better scope of composition and sources of DOM. The DOM was enriched in autochthonous and anthropogenic inputs at upstream sites according to high chlorophyll a concentrations, strong protein-like fluorescence, and nonoxygen heteroatomic CHOS formulae (19-24% by relative peak intensity) detected by FT-ICR MS analysis. A series of surfactant-like formulae, indicative of wastewater inputs, were identified and showed a decreasing trend from upstream to the river mouth. Compared with large world rivers, the DOM of Daliao River is characterized by higher abundances of heteroatomic (excluding O) formulae and molecular lability, which is likely caused by strong autochthonous and anthropogenic inputs. In general, we demonstrate that in addition to optical properties, the molecular composition can assess the specific anthropogenic imprints and molecular lability of DOM, which is essential for constraining sources and identifying processes during the transit of DOM from the river to estuary with increasing urbanization and industrialization.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands are active transitional ecotones between land and ocean, and are considered as hot spots of organic matter processing within the global carbon cycle, which dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a critical role. In this study, combined use of ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) and complementary optical techniques was conducted to assess the detailed molecular composition of DOM in the temperate Liaohe coastal wetland (LCW), NE China in respect to the differences in DOM composition from surface water to sediment pore water. Significant positive correlations between salinity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were observed in both surface waters and pore waters. Pore water DOM is generally characterized by lower protein-like fluorescence and biological index, but higher humification and humic-like fluorescent components than those in surface water DOM. Corresponding to the optical properties, FT-ICR MS measurements show that pore water DOM has higher proportions of heteroatoms, aromaticity index, O/C ratios, unsaturated aliphatics, and peptides, but lower average H/C ratios compared to surface water DOM across locations with different marsh plant species (rice (Oryza sativa), reed (Phragmites australis), Seablite (Suaeda Salsa)) and salinity (0.5 to 51.5 psu). The results suggest that selective preservation for polyphenols, lignin degradation intermediates (highly unsaturated compounds), and microbial resynthesis of heteroatomic compounds are involved in the processing of DOM from surface water to pore water, leading to the formation of higher molecular weight and sulfur-containing molecules. The abundant CHOS compounds could be related to the early diagenetic sulfurization of DOM in sediments. Our unique data set should provide new clues for a comprehensive understanding of the molecular dynamics of DOM in coastal wetlands.
Analysis of the Three-Dimensional Fluorescence Spectroscopy Characteristics of Dissolved Organic Matter in Groundwater from a Subtropical Cave in Dry Season—Daxiao Cave in South China Karst

Abstract:Groups in dissolved organic matter (DOM) emit fluorescence information at characteristic wavelengths when irradiated by excitation waves, which can reveal the geochemical behavior of dissolved organic matter in the environment and its sources, but there are few relevant studies in cave groundwater systems. In order to investigate the relationship between drip hydrochemistry characteristics and DOM in cave systems after subsurface leakage, in this study, from the perspective of dissolved organic matter in the karst cave water system, the groundwater in the dry season of Daxiao Cave was selected as the research object. Five drip points and one water pool (DX-1, DX-2, DX-3, DX-4, DX-5, and DX-C) in Daxiao Cave were monitored and consecutively sampled for four months. The parallel factor analysis method (PARAFAC), three-dimensional (3D) fluorescence parameters, and excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEM), combined with the hydrochemistry characteristics of the drip water and correlation analysis, were used to analyze the 3D fluorescence spectral characteristics of the DOM of the drip water of Daxiao Cave and their influencing factors. The results show that (1) the hydrochemistry type of the drip water in Daxiao Cave was within the Ca–Mg–HCO3 type, and Ca2+, Mg2+, and HCO3− were the dominant ions in Daxiao Cave; (2) the fluorescence fractions of drip water in dry season caves were dominated by C1 (humus-like), C2 (tryptophan-like), and C3 (tyrosine-like), and the fluorescence fractions of drip water DOM were controlled by protein fluorophores; (3) the DOM in the drip water of Daxiao Cave in the dry season was controlled in part by subsurface leakage and was largely the result of microbial degradation; and (4) the DOM of the drip water may be influenced by the chemical composition of the water, but the exact process is not clear.

Dissolved Organic Carbon Source Attribution in the Changjiang Outflow Region of the East China Sea

Abstract:The variable optical properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) under the complicated dynamic marine environment make it difficult to establish a robust inversion algorithm for quantifying the dissolved organic carbon (DOC). To better understand the main factors affecting the relationship between the DOC and the CDOM when the Changjiang diluted water (CDW) interacts with the marine currents on the wide continental shelf, we measured the DOC concentration, the absorption, and the fluorescence spectra of the CDOM along the main axis and the northern boundary of the CDW. The sources of DOC and their impacts on the relationship between the optical properties of the DOC and CDOM are discussed. We reached the following conclusions: There are strong positive correlations between the absorptive and fluorescent properties of the DOC and the CDOM as a whole. The dilution of the terrestrial DOC carried by the CDW through mixing with saline sea water is the dominant mechanism controlling the characteristics of the optical properties of the CDOM. CDOM optical properties can be adopted to establish inversion models in retrieving DOC in Changjiang River Estuary. It is concluded that the introduction of extra DOC from different sources is the main factor causing the regional optical complexity leading to the bias of DOC estimation rather than removal mechanism. As whole, the input of polluted water from Huangpujiang River with abnormally high a(355) and Fs(355) will induce the overestimation of DOC. In the main axis of CDW, the impact from autochthonous DOC input to the correlation between DOC and CDOM can be neglected in comparison with conservative dilution procedure. The relationship between the DOC and the CDOM on the northern boundary of the CDW is more complicated, which can be attributed to the continuous input of terrestrial material from the Old Huanghe Delta by the Subei Coastal Current, the input of materials from the Yellow sea by the Yellow Sea Warm Western Coastal Current, and the input of materials from the Changjiang Basin by the CDW. The results of this study suggest that long-term observations of the regional variations in the DOM inputs from multiple sources in the interior of the CDW are essential, which is conducive to assess the degree of impact to the DOC estimation through the CDOM in the East China Sea.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is of great importance in biogeochemical processes, such as sulfate reduction, in groundwater. H2S is generated from microbial-mediated sulfate reduction fueled by DOM and erodes carbonate. However, understanding the transformation and fate of DOM in sulfated-contaminated karst aquifers is still poor. Here, fluorescence spectroscopy was used to characterize the DOM pool in the sulfate-contaminated (from human activities) karst aquifer of the Zengpiyan Site, South China, by investigating the groundwater flow system. A comparison of fluorescence DOM (FDOM) characteristics between the concentrated flow zone (CFZ) composed of highly permeable small conduits and fracture networks and the matrix-with-fractures zone (MFZ) made of low permeable fractures and matrix rock aquifers was done. The relative groundwater residence times for all sample sites were estimated using γCa/γMg, which are consistent with those of the groundwater tracer test. The FDOM in groundwater in the CFZ was composed mainly of terrestrial-derived fulvic acid (FA)- and humic acid (HA)-like components, with relatively small contributions of microbially derived tryptophan (TPH)-like components. Compared with CFZ groundwater, the MFZ groundwater showed a longer residence time and reducing conditions, more bioavailable DOM, dominant TPH-like components with relatively small contributions of FA-like components, and fewer humus and hydrophobic structures. Hydrogeological conditions indirectly altered DOM composition by altering the biotic and abiotic activity conditions. The coexistence of relatively strong reducibility conditions and the higher proportion of bioavailable DOM in the MFZ would promote sulfate reduction to H2S gas, possibly amplifying carbonate dissolution, leading to the erosion of cultural relics. It is hoped that this study will contribute to knowledge on DOM behavior in karst aquifers and provide a scientific basis for cave site protection.

Abstract:The source regions of the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are extremely important water resources and ecological functional areas in China, and the ecological environment is fragile and sensitive to climate change. Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is an important component that plays a crucial role in the biogeochemical cycle in aquatic ecosystems. However, knowledge of the distribution characteristics of CDOM in this area is limited. In this study, the optical properties, possible sources of CDOM, and their relationships with environmental variables were investigated in the two regions. The results indicated that the CDOM absorption spectra of these two source regions had a high degree of consistency, and the absorption coefficient aCDOM(355) was small, with a mean of 2.07 ± 1.10 m-1. Two fluorescence components (C1 and C2) were identified and grouped into the humic-like component with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) of fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEMs), which exhibited highly similar (excitations/emission)max positions between each pair of components in the two regions. Comprehensive CDOM spectral absorption and fluorescence parameters suggested that CDOM was mainly derived from externally input humus, and the source region of the Yellow River showed stronger allochthonous sources. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) gradients in the water affected the fluorescence intensity and indicated that the humic-like component was an important component of DOC. Water temperature (WT) and turbidity (Turb) positively affected the concentration of CDOM and the ability to absorb light in the aquatic ecosystems. Due to global warming, the rising temperature may lead to an increase in meltwater inflow in the source area and will also bring more external inputs through the runoff.
Optical Absorption Properties of CDOM and Tracing Implication of DOC in the Changjiang Estuary

Abstract:The spectral absorption properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter(CDOM) and the concentration of dissolved organic carbon(DOC) in the Changjiang Estuary from Luchaogang Dock to Shengsi Islands was studied during winter of 2009.The distribution of absorption coefficient α(355) and spectral slope of CDOM were analyzed and the source character and relationship between CDOM and DOC were discussed.Over a salinity range of 18.96~28.00,α(355) ranged from 0.2689~1.183 1 m-1,while the average value was 0.824 9 m-1,lower than values in the wet season,also the other estuaries of China and abroad,which may be attributed to the low degree of vegetative cover in the Changjiang drainage basin and low river flow in winter.The river discharge has significantly influenced on the CDOM distribution in the estuary.The spectral slopes varied from 0.011 3 to 0.017 4 nm-1,and the average value was 0.015 3 nm-1,a little lower comparing with that in the wet season.The inverse relationship between DOC and salinity(R2=0.882) showed the dissolved organic matter(DOM) were primarily terrestrial.And the relationship between CDOM and DOC(CDOMα(355)=0.371DOC+1.012(R2=0.48)) showed that CDOM was a promising tracer for the land source DOC,but the stable inverse model need further study.
Effects of aquatic phototrophs on seasonal hydrochemical, inorganic, and organic carbon variations in a typical karst basin, Southwest China

Abstract:Karst processes play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Aquatic phototrophs can transform bicarbonate, which is mainly derived from the weathering of carbonates, into organic carbon. Carbonate mineral weathering coupled with aquatic photosynthesis can be considered a stable and durable carbon sink process. In this study, we addressed seasonal variations in water chemistry in the Lijiang River Basin, which is a typical karst basin, through a comprehensive geochemical study of the river water in four seasons. The parameters were measured in situ, including major ions and isotopes of inorganic and organic carbon. The results showed that (1) DIC was mainly derived from the weathering of carbonates; (2) the transformation from bicarbonate to organic carbon by aquatic phototrophs was evident, and the water chemistry changed, especially in spring and autumn and in the mainstream from Guilin to Yangshuo, which benefited the growth of aquatic phototrophs; and (3) the organic carbon derived from bicarbonates by aquatic phototrophs was nearly half the total organic carbon and 8% of the dissolved inorganic carbon. These results imply that aquatic phototrophs in karst basins can significantly stabilize carbon originating from carbonate rock weathering processes in karst areas.

Abstract:In order to improve the understanding of the global carbon cycle and the stability of karst carbon sinks, it is necessary to better understand the source, distribution and transformation characteristics of organic matter (OM) in aquatic ecosystems. Here, stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N), elemental analysis (C/N ratios), and lipid biomarkers were analyzed for dissolved organic matter (DOM) (<0.7 μm), particulate organic matter (POM) (>0.7 μm) of water, and organic matter from sediment cores (SCOM) to identify the sources, distribution, and transformation of OM in a subtropical karst reservoir. The results showed that short-chain (C14–20) n-alkyl lipids were more abundant than long-chain (C21–34) n-alkyl lipids in both the DOM and SCOM samples, indicating that bacteria were the primary sources of these lipids, while terrestrial organic matter (OM) made only a minor contribution to the n-alkyl lipid pool, and aquatic plants (macrophytes) OM contributed major contribution to the n-alkyl lipid pool in POM. Microbial activity and lipid degradation were more pronounced in the DOM. Furthermore, terrigenous and macrophyte-derived lipids were found to be more abundant in POM than in DOM and SCOM, suggesting that they are relatively resistant to degradation compared with phytoplankton-derived OM.

Abstract:The dissolved organic matter (DOM) migration and transformation in karst aquifer are of great significance for geochemical processes but remain poorly understood. In this study, we selected the Guilin Yaji Karst Experimental Site as a natural laboratory and collected rainwater (RW), drip water (DW), and phreatic water (PW) from September 2019 to September 2021 to study the DOM migration and transformation in a typical bare karst spring catchment. Hydrochemical and stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes were applied to study the water cycle of the aquifer. Absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy were used to characterize the DOM quality. Three-dimensional fluorescence combined with fluorescence regional integration was used for identifying the DOM compositions. The RW DOM had a weak humification degree and strong terrestrial characteristics. It was affected by the monsoon and showed higher humification in the dry season than in the wet season. The higher rainfall intensity had a dilution effect on the DOM fluorescence components levels when the rain intensity was>10 mm/day (not the threshold value). Continuous rain events led to the continuous dilution effect on RW DOM in the dry season, but such a phenomenon was not obvious in the wet season. The DW DOM inherited weak humification characteristic that was close to RW DOM but was altered by the hydrogeology conditions and plant root and microbial activities intensities of the upper vadose zone. The higher humification degree of PW DOM may be related to the higher degree of microbial processing caused by the longer groundwater residence time. The humic and hydrophobic degree of DOM for fissure PW was weaker than that for conduit PW because fissure media provides a superior condition for DOM to adsorb to the mineral surface. In the wet season, when the preferential channel of the aquifer was activated, the PW DOM showed similar characteristics to RW DOM, indicating a significant hydrologic effect on the PW DOM. Our results provide a valuable reference to advance understanding of DOM behavior in karst aquifer and highlight the importance of hydrogeologic conditions and hydrologic processes on DOM migration and transformation.

Abstract:Autochthonic recalcitrant organic carbon is the most stable component in karst aquatic systems. Still, the processes of its generation and transformation remain unclear, which hinders the study of the mechanisms and quantitative calculations of carbon sinks in karst aquatic systems. This study collected water samples from the Li River, a typical surface karst river in Southwest China. Through in situ microbial cultivation and the chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) spectrum, changes in organic carbon components and their contents during the transformation of autochthonic dissolved organic carbon (Auto-DOC) to autochthonic dissolved recalcitrant organic carbon (Auto-RDOC) were analyzed to investigate the inert transformation processes of endogenous organic carbon. This study found that microbial carbon pumps (MCPs) promote the tyrosine-like component condensed into microbial-derived fulvic and humic components via heterotrophic bacteria metabolism, forming Auto-RDOC. During the dry season, the high level of Auto-DOC provides abundant organic substrates for heterotrophic bacteria, resulting in significantly higher Auto-RDOC production compared to the rainy season. This study provides fundamental information on the formation mechanisms of Auto-DOC in karst aquatic systems, which contributes to the assessment of carbon sinks in karst aquatic systems.

[Distribution Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter in a Northern-Side River of the Qinling Mountains in Summer].

Abstract:UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and parallel factor analysis were used to analyze the composition of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the waters of the Wangchuan River in summer, and the source of this CDOM was explored. The redundant analysis method and Pearson correlation were used to analyze the correlation between optical parameters and water quality parameters. The results showed that the CDOM of the Wangchuan River is composed of the tryptophan-like component C1 (245, 300/335 nm), the short-wave humus component C2 (240, 320-340/405 nm), and the long-wave humus component C3 (270, 350-370/470 nm), in which components C1 and C2 have some homology (r=0.859, P<0.001). CDOM absorption coefficient α(355) indicates that the CDOM concentration in the water body of the Wangchuan River is at a low level, and the correlation between α(355) and DOC concentration is significant (r=0.850, P<0.001), which is conducive to the establishment of a DOC inversion model. Water fluorescence index FI (2.36±0.20), HIX (3.66±2.47), BIX (1.56±0.82), and freshness index (β:α) (1.33±0.62), and the spectral slope ratio SR (0.76±0.25) indicate that the CDOM of the Wangchuan River has strong self-generated characteristics, weak humification characteristics, and more new CDOM. Redundancy analysis showed that the humic components (C2, C3) are affected by algae metabolism and microbial action, while tryptophan-like components (C1) are related to land-based input, and negatively correlated with dissolved total nitrogen. The humic components C2 and C3 are positively correlated with total phosphorus, dissolved total phosphorus, and dissolved organic carbon. This paper clarifies the characteristics and influencing factors of CDOM in the Qinling valley, and provides a theoretical basis for water body management in the Qinling valley.

Abstract:We applied stable carbon isotopes, ultraviolet-visible absorption (UV-Vis) and fluorescence excitation-emission matrices spectroscopy (EEMs), Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) to investigate the chemical composition and sources of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in both the water column and pore water in Xiangshan Bay, a representative semi-enclosed and eutrophic bay in Zhejiang Province, China. One protein-like fluorescent component (C1) and two humic-like fluorescent components (C2 and C3) were identified by PARAFAC modeling. The concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), the relative intensities of C2, C3, and black carbon-like compounds are all negatively correlated with salinity, indicating that there is a dilution effect of terrestrial signals by seawater in Xiangshan Bay. The differences in light penetration ability of Xiangshan Bay cause different degrees of photo-degradation, which may play an important role in the transformation of organic matter in Xiangshan Bay. The weak correlation between the C1 fluorescent component and salinity indicates that autochthonous sources cannot dominate the protein-like FDOM in the Xiangshan Bay drainage area. Multiple sources (such as anthropogenic inputs and release of pore water) also affect the distribution of the protein-like fluorescent component under eutrophication conditions. The relative proportion of the protein-like fluorescent component in Xiangshan Bay is on a medium level in China and anthropogenic inputs may be a significant source of DOM in coastal bays.

Abstract:Inland surface water plays an important role in global carbon cycling, which responds to transformation between dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Studies have shown that algae in karst lakes and reservoirs can convert DIC to organic matter (OM) and form stable carbon sinks via photosynthesis. However, the pathways of conversion of inorganic carbon to organic carbon during algal growth remain unclear and need further investigation. In this study, spectroscopic techniques were applied to investigate the variations in algal organic matter (AOM) composition in the growth metabolism of Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus under simulated karst water condition. The results showed that algal extracellular organic matter (EOM) contained high DIC concentration during the adaptation phase, which formed the carbon source for algal photosynthesis. In addition, DOC in algae increased after entering the stationary phase, while more OM was released into water. As algal growth proceeded, the amino groups in EOM were consumed to produce more aromatic protein-like material, while more lipid material was produced in intracellular organic matter (IOM). The spectral characterization results could intuitively determine AOM dynamics in different growth stages of algae, which can be used for establishing effective approaches for detecting organic carbon variations and responding to regional carbon cycling in karst water.

Abstract:Carbon cycling in rivers is altered by the creation of impoundments through dam construction. This paper seeks to identify the source and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in both water and sediment in Lake Longjing by contrasting the optical characterization of DOM. By comparing the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, we show that the sediment (53.7 ± 16.6 mg/L) acts as a DOC source to the overlying water (23.1 ± 1.4 mg/L). The estimated DOC flux in the original reservoir region (88.3 mg m−2 d−1) is higher than that in the newly submerged region (26 mg m−2 d−1), whereas the latter has larger contribution to the DOC annual load because of its larger sediment area. Spectroscopic analysis suggested that pore waters had higher aromaticity and lower proportion of fresh DOM than those in surface waters and benthic overlying waters. Through Parallel Factor Analysis, four fluorescent components were identified, i.e., two terrestrial humic-like components, one protein-like, and one microbial humic-like. Spearman correlation and Non-Metric-Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) analysis manifested that fluorescent DOM in surface sediments is mainly contributed by autochthonous source, the others by allochthonous source. Due to the high sensitivity of the fluorescent intensity of the protein-like component, it is a useful indicator to reveal the changes of source of DOM.

Abstract:Spectral characteristics of CDOM (Chromophoric dissolved organic matter) in water columns are a key parameter for bio-optical modeling. Knowledge of CDOM optical properties and spatial discrepancy based on the relationship between water quality and spectral parameters in the Yinma River watershed with in situ data collected from highly polluted waters are exhibited in this study. Based on the comprehensive index method, the riverine waters showed serious contamination; especially the chemical oxygen demand (COD), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg) and dissolved oxygen (DO) were out of range of the contamination warning. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total suspended matter (TSM) with prominent non-homogenizing were significantly high in the riverine waters, but chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) was the opposite. The ternary phase diagram showed that non-algal particle absorption played an important role in total non-water light absorption (>50%) in most sampling locations, and mean contributions of CDOM were 13% and 22% in the summer and autumn, respectively. The analysis of the ratio of absorption at 250–365 nm (E250:365) and the spectral slope (S275–295) indicated that CDOM had higher aromaticity and molecular weight in autumn than in summer, which is consistent with the results of water quality and the CDOM relative contribution rate. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that the environmental variables OSM (Organic suspended matter) had a strong correlation with CDOM absorption, followed by heavy metals, e.g., Mn, Hg and Cr6+. However, for the specific UV absorbance (SUVA254), the seasonal values showed opposite results compared with the reported literature. The potential reasons were that more UDOM (uncolored dissolved organic matter) from human sources (wastewater effluent) existed in the waters. Terrigenous inputs simultaneously are in relation to the aCDOM(440)-DOC relationship with the correlation coefficient of 0.90 in the summer (two-tailed, p < 0.01), and 0.58 in the autumn (two-tailed, p < 0.05). Spatial distribution of the CDOM parameters exhibited that the downstream regions focused on dry land have high CDOM molecular weight and aromatic hydrocarbon. Partial sampling locations around the cities or countries generally showed abnormal values due to terrigenous inputs. As a bio-optical model parameter, the spectral characteristic of CDOM is helpful in adjusting the derived algorithms in highly polluted environments. The study on organic carbon and pollutants in highly polluted waters had an important contribution to global carbon balance estimation and water environment protection.
