Abstract:A long-range ordered lamellae-within-lamellae hierarchical structure is reported for the first time through the directed self-assembly of supramolecular polymer-surfactant thin films on chemical patterns with density multiplication. The coassembly of supramolecular system with gold nanoparticles is further achieved to create a hybrid material with well-organized nanoparticle arrays, expanding the palette of morphologies and structures available for nanoscale fabrication. Hierarchical 2D-1D Micelles Self-Assembled from Heterogeneous Seeded-Growth of Rod-Coil Block Copolymers

Abstract:Precise control of size and dimension is the key to constructing complex hierarchical nanostructures, especially multi-dimensional hybrid nanoassemblies. Herein, we conduct Brownian dynamics simulations to examine the seeded-growth of rod-coil block copolymer assemblies and discover that 2D-1D (disk-cylinder) hybrid micelles can be formed via liquid-crystallization-driven self-assembly (LCDSA). 2D nanodisk micelles with smectic-like LC cores serve as seeds. After adding rod-coil block copolymers into the seed solution, the copolymers incorporate onto the 2D seed edges to generate junction points. Several cylindrical arms are formed from the elongation of junction points, resulting in 2D-1D multi-dimensional hybrid micelles. The structural transition of the micelle core from smectic-like (disk) to cholesteric-like (cylindrical arms) LC packing manners benefits from the fluidity of LC. Such a seeded-growth behavior simultaneously exhibits the features of heterogeneous nucleation and homogenous epitaxy growth. Intriguingly, the arms generate in sequence, and its junction position is in para-position first, followed by ortho-position or meta-position, resembling the difference in the substituent activities on the benzene ring. These theoretical findings are consistent with experimental results and provide explanations to some unaddressed issues in experiments. The gained results also reveal that the hybrid micelles are a good stabilizer due to their high surface area and distinctive suspension behaviors.

Abstract:Abstract Hierarchical self-assembly of polymeric building blocks into high-level colloidosomes is desirable to not only design novel nanostructures but also fabricate the complex artificial materials across many length scales with multifunctionality. Although great progress has been made in the designing the hierarchical colloidosomes, the fabrication of polymeric colloidosomes self-assembled from block copolymer (BCP) colloidal nanoparticles still remains challenge. Here, we report the fabrication of the hierarchical polymeric colloidosomes with typical hollow internal structures self-assembled from the polystyrene- block -poly (2-vinyl pyridine) (PS- b -P2VP) BCP spherical micelles through the emulsion interfacial confinement, which is constructed through the water-in-1-butanol emulsion system. Moreover, the hierarchical colloidosomes can disassemble into the original uniform spherical micelles under the acid aqueous solution, indicating that the colloidosomes possess good pH stimuli-responsibility. Finally, the stability of the colloidosomes can be greatly improved by cross-linking the P2VP corona of original spherical micelles, offering the effective templates for construction of the multifunctional materials. This finding provides a simple yet effective method for the fabrication of the hierarchical colloidosomes from the BCP building blocks.

Abstract:Co-assembly of multicomponent polymers could promote the evolution of polymer assemblies into high-order nanostructures. The topological architecture of polymers is an important factor to affect their self-assembly behavior; however, the effect of topological architecture on the co-assembly behavior is still not clear. Herein, the aqueous co-assembly of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene (PEG-b-PS) block copolymers (BCPs) and molecular bottlebrushes (MBBs) with polystyrene (PS) as side chains was conducted to investigate the effect of topological architecture on the co-assembly behavior. First, well-defined PEG-b-PS BCPs with varying degrees of polymerization (DP) of PEG and PS, and PS MBBs with different lengths (DP) of backbone were synthesized via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), respectively. By varying the DP of PS segments in BCPs and backbone length of MBBs as well as the mass ratio of BCPs and MBBs, various nanostructures ranging from spherical micelles to vesicles and large-compound vesicles (LCVs) were obtained. It was found that the insertion of the PS segment of block copolymers into the side chains of PS MBBs to stabilize MBBs in selective solvents is the key factor for the formation of stable nanometer-sized structures.

Morphology Evolution of Polymeric Assemblies Regulated with Fluoro-Containing Mesogen in Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Abstract:Mesogen-containing amphiphilic block copolymers have shown extremely abundant self-assembly behaviors because of the liquid crystalline (LC) alignment within the assemblies. However, development of an understanding of the self-assembly behaviors of these amphiphilic LC polymers is still constrained by the low assembly concentration and complex kinetic effects. Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a powerful technique to prepare polymer assemblies at high solids content with good repeatability. Taking advantage of PISA, we systematically study the self-assembly behaviors of a series of mesogen-containing triblock copolymers poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(benzyl methacrylate)-b-poly(2-perfluorooctylethyl methacrylate) (PDMA-b-PBzMA-b-PFMA), which are prepared by seeded reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer dispersion polymerization of FMA with PDMA-b-PBzMA micelles or vesicles as the seeds. When PDMA-b-PBzMA micelles are used, the morphology of the PDMA-b-PBzMA-b-PFMA assemblies evolves from spheroid to phase-segregated sphere, followed by phase-segregated spheroid, and eventually to cylinder, while the assemblies undergo a vesicle-to-micelle transition with a framboidal intermediate when PDMA-b-PBzMA vesicles are used as the seeds. These spherical micelles further fuse to cylinders or large spheres depending on the DPs of PBzMA and PFMA blocks. The LC ordering of the PFMA blocks is examined by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction; the microphase segregation between PFMA and PBzMA blocks is studied with TEM and atomic force microscopy. These experiments evince that the formation of the ellipsoidal and cylindrical micelles is driven by the LC alignment of PFMA blocks, while the microphase segregation between PFMA and PBzMA blocks complicates the ultimate morphology through modulating the size of PFMA nanodomains. The interplay of the hydrophobic interaction among PBzMA blocks, lipophobic interaction, and LC ordering of PFMA blocks thus generates the above self-assembly behaviors.

Abstract:The direct construction of protein-like multicompartment nanoparticles (MCNs) possessing hydrophilic/hydrophobic subdomains is a contemporary challenge. Herein, we present the first example of such MCNs via self-assembly of the specially designed A(BC)20 star polymer in an aqueous solution. The topology of the 21-arm star polymer, poly(ethylene glycol)[poly(acrylic acid)-block-polystyrene]20 [PEG(PAA-b-PS)20], is the key to simultaneously form hydrophilic/hydrophobic subdomains of nanoparticles during self-assembling, as the water-soluble PAA blocks are confined in the core, resulting in hydrophilic subdomains. The volume ratio of PS to PAA (V PS/V PAA) is found to be the main factor that determines the morphology of MCNs; besides micelles and vesicles, strings consisting of one-dimensional (1D) alignment of single-star polymers were found for the first time, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cryo-TEM. Lastly, a new mechanism for the assembly of the star polymers was proposed based on the investigations of PEG(PAA-b-PS)20 self-assembly under different water contents, concentrations, and pH values. The MCNs reported in this work may find various applications in, e.g., co-delivery of drugs and heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:AbstractAlthough a great deal of unique nanostructures were already obtained from polymer self-assemblies in terms of conventional parameters, the self-assembly under the confinement is still not well understood. Here, dissipative particle dynamics simulations were used to explore the self-assemble behaviors of linear ABC triblock copolymers under rigid spherical confinements. First several unusual morphologies, such as multilayer onion, coupled helix, and stacked lamella, were distinguished from the total 210 simulations. Second, the influences of three important parameters (block sequence, wall selectivity, and spherical radius) on the morphologies were discussed in detail. Finally, the dynamics evolution of several typical aggregates was examined. This simulation enriches micelle morphologies for the self-assembly of linear ABC triblock copolymers under rigid spherical confinements and is helpful to understand the formation of valuable nanostructures from linear ABC terpolymers.

Abstract:Hierarchical bundled fiber and multilayer vesicle can be fabricated by a series of PDenm‐b‐PACholn using one‐step solvent‐exchange method. Utilizing temperature as an environmental trigger, the thermal‐responsive collapse of PDen blocks and LC alignment of PAChol blocks synergistically occurs, leading to the epitaxial growth of hierarchical assemblies and facilitates lateral fusion in a side‐by‐side manner. Functional hierarchy is prevalent in biological systems owing to natural evolution. Efforts to replicate these structures in artificial materials have gained traction in materials science. Although artificial hierarchical structures are fabricated at different scales based on site‐specific interactions using ABC‐type block copolymers (BCPs), the fabrication of such hierarchical structures using AB‐type BCPs via a simple and efficient method remains challenging. Herein, a class of amphiphilic BCPs (PDenm‐b‐PACholn) is reported comprising dendronized oligoethylene glycol (Den) and cholesterol (AChol) as hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties, respectively. By employing the collapse of PDenm blocks at a specific temperature, the fabrication of bundled fibers and multilayer vesicles is achieved with an obvious hierarchy. Different from common reversible aggregation–disaggregation processes of thermal‐responsive polymers, the ordering of the core‐forming block with liquid crystalline (LC) properties provides robustly physical cross‐linking, coupled with epitaxial growth and the lateral fusion of LC blocks, guiding the formation of stable hierarchical micellar structures. It is highlighted that the combination of temperature‐sensitive properties and LC ordering alignment offers a novel approach for constructing hierarchical structures using AB‐type BCPs via an efficient one‐step assembly method.

Abstract:The effects of structural constraint on the thermosensitivity and dynamic self-assembly behaviors of PNIPAM-based nonlinear multihydrophilic block copolymers (MHBCs) are investigated by a combination of calorimetric, NMR, FTIR, DLS and zeta potential measurements. Two novel miktoarm star MHBCs, (PNIPAM)(2)-(PVP-b-PAA)(2) with PNIPAM segments constrained at one end and (PNIPAM-b-PAA)(2)-(PVP)(2) with PNIPAM segments constrained at two ends, are mainly analyzed to make comparison. As we previously reported (Soft Matter, 2012, 8, 3980), in (PNIPAM)(2)-(PVP-b-PAA)(2) the three polymeric segments have relatively independent phase behaviors during the formation of PNIPAM-core micelles. However, by introducing more structural constraints to PNIPAM segments, (PNIPAM-b-PAA)(2)-(PVP)(2) exhibits a much smoother and weaker phase transition. Additional analysis by IR spectroscopy, in combination with perturbation correlation moving window (PCMW) and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS), indicates that PVP segments in (PNIPAM-b-PAA)(2)-(PVP)(2) show phase transition-like behavior by participating in the self-association process of PNIPAM segments, and there are both unimers and small associates existing in the solution below the LCST due to the slight interaction between PVP and PNIPAM segments. Moreover, due to the presence of PVP segments in the core, the micelles formed by (PNIPAM-b-PAA)(2)-(PVP)(2) should have a loosely organized superstructure, which may account for the weak phase transition and low degree of phase separation. Finally, we propose a mechanism of the self-assembly process of (PNIPAM-b-PAA)(2)-(PVP)(2), which is further confirmed by DLS and zeta potential measurements.
Self-Assembly of Single-Chain Nanoparticles from Block Copolymers into Inverse Bicontinuous Structures

Abstract:Polymer particles with inverse bicontinuous structures are widely used due to their well-defined ordered pore networks. These structures are typically prepared by traditional self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers (BCPs) in solution or polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). In both methods, BCPs must be highly asymmetric with long hydrophobic chains. In this study, we report a credible approach where single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) preferentially self-assemble into inverse bicontinuous structures by folding the hydrophilic chains of BCPs, which can reduce the molecular area a 0 and thus increase the packing parameter ( P ) greater than unity. It is anticipated that this strategy will lessen the rigorous requirement of inverse bicontinuous structures on the BCP asymmetry. To illustrate this strategy, we prepared tadpole-like SCNPs of poly(4-vinylpyridine)- block -polystyrene (P4VP- b -PS) by intrachain cross-linking the P4VP blocks. Polymer cubosomes could be self-assembled from both linear BCPs and tadpole-like SCNPs, resulting in a distinct reduction in the minimal volume fractions of PS ( f PS ) (94.4% and 91.1%, respectively). A plausible formation mechanism of cubosome was proposed. In addition, the efficiency of intrachain cross-linking and the property of the co-solvent played crucial roles in the formation of cubosomes. Overall, this work provides an effective method for preparing polymer particles with inverse bicontinuous structures from relatively low-asymmetric BCPs with a broad window.

Trajectory of medication-induced constipation in patients with cancer.

Abstract:PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES To determine the severity and trajectory of constipation among patients with cancer from opioids and/or vinca alkaloids. DESIGN Exploratory, descriptive. SETTING Moffitt Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Tampa, FL. SAMPLE 400 patients at risk for developing medication-induced constipation from opioids, vinca alkaloids, or both. METHODS Patients' baseline data included the Constipation Assessment Scale (CAS), the constipation item from the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (MSAS) for intensity and distress, and the laxative interview. Following the interview, the medical chart was reviewed for clinical and demographic data. Patients were asked about constipation (CAS) and laxatives consumed (laxative interview) during eight weekly telephone calls. MAIN RESEARCH VARIABLES Constipation presence, intensity, and distress. FINDINGS At baseline, 63% of patients reported some level of constipation. During the eight weeks, constipation fluctuated with scores ranging from 0-16, with the opioid-only group showing a small but statistically significant decrease in intensity. Constipation intensity and distress on the MSAS were significantly correlated (r = 0.76; p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS The majority of the sample reported constipation that ranged from mild to severe, persisted over time, and caused symptom distress. Therefore, healthcare providers in the cancer center likely were neither adequately managing the medication-induced constipation nor apparently teaching patients to manage it themselves. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines support the importance of managing medication-induced constipation. However, guidelines are not being followed in many cases; therefore, more focus is needed on constipation in clinical and educational settings as well as more research. KNOWLEDGE TRANSLATION Patients receiving opioids and vinca alkaloids are at risk of constipation. Currently, medication-induced constipation is poorly managed. Managing constipation may lessen symptom distress, thereby improving quality of life in these patients.
Self-assembly of Amphiphilic Plasmonic Micelle-Like Nanoparticles in Selective Solvents.

Abstract:Amphiphilic plasmonic micelle-like nanoparticles (APMNs) composed of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and amphiphilic block copolymers (BCPs) structurally resemble polymer micelles with well-defined architectures and chemistry. The APMNs can be potentially considered as a prototype for modeling a higher-level self-assembly of micelles. The understanding of such secondary self-assembly is of particular importance for the bottom-up design of new hierarchical nanostructures. This article describes the self-assembly, modeling, and applications of APMN assemblies in selective solvents. In a mixture of water/tetrahydrofuran, APMNs assembled into various superstructures, including unimolecular micelles, clusters with controlled number of APMNs, and vesicles, depending on the lengths of polymer tethers and the sizes of AuNP cores. The delicate interplay of entropy and enthalpy contributions to the overall free energy associated with the assembly process, which is strongly dependent on the spherical architecture of APMNs, yields an assembly diagram that is different from the assembly of linear BCPs. Our experimental and computational studies suggested that the morphologies of assemblies were largely determined by the deformability of the effective nanoparticles (that is, nanoparticles together with tethered chains as a whole). The assemblies of APMNs resulted in strong absorption in near-infrared range due to the remarkable plasmonic coupling of Au cores, thus facilitating their biomedical applications in bioimaging and photothermal therapy of cancer.

Abstract:Various pathways have been utilized to manipulate microphase separation (MPS) of block copolymers, but the obtained MPS nanostructures are often suffering from poor thermal stability. Here, confined self-assembly is first adopted to thermally stabilize and conveniently pattern the MPS morphologies of an amphiphilic liquid-crystalline block copolymer (LCBC) composed of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and hydrophobic azobenzene-containing polymethacrylate. The MPS nanostructures are thermally stabilized by top coating a layer of water-soluble polymer, sodium polystyrenesulfonate (PSSNa), as a result of coordination interaction between PEO and PSSNa. Interestingly, both thermal annealing and rubbing-treated polyimide film caused reorientation of mesogens in the PSSNa-coated LCBC film; however, the orientation of PEO nanocylinders remained unchangeable. This indicates that the PEO nanocylinders are selectively anchored by the PSSNa covering layer, regardless of the changes of mesogenic orientation. Thus, complicated hierarchical nanostructures can be fabricated effortlessly and preserved nondestructively by selected-area confined self-assembly or noncontact photopatterned technology due to the existence of photoresponsive azobenzene moieties.

Abstract:The self-assembly of a small number of nanoparticles into superstructures that mimic the geometry of molecules provides an unprecedented route for creating materials with precisely defined structures and potentially programmable functionalities. Such nanoparticle clusters (NPCs), also known as colloidal molecules, have a wide range of applications due to the decisive ensemble effect. Here, a universal and straightforward strategy is developed to construct NPCs with tunable molecular-like geometries by confining the self-assembly of hydrophobic nanoparticles within micelles formed by amphiphilic copolymers. It is found that confinement assembly of both spherical and anisotropic nanoparticles can lead to NPCs, the molecular-like conformation of which is widely tunable by adjusting the ratio between copolymers and nanoparticles. Mechanistic studies reveal the formation of large-vesicle intermediates along the path toward forming NPCs. This work establishes a facile and general strategy of assembling finite nanoparticles with precisely tunable geometries without introducing any directional interactions, which can accelerate the exploration of clustered superstructures toward broad applications.
Competitive Self-Assembly Kinetics As a Route to Control the Morphology of Core-Crystalline Cylindrical Micelles.

Abstract:Nucleated self-assembly in selective solvents of core-crystalline block copolymers (BCPs) is a special case of living supramolecular polymerization, leading to rodlike micelles of controlled and uniform length. For the crystallization-driven self-assembly of PFS-containing BCPs (PFS = polyferrocenyldimethylsilane), the formation of block comicelles by sequential addition of different BCPs is well-established. But there are only a few examples of living copolymerization, the simultaneous addition of pairs of BCPs with different corona-forming chains. At present, relatively little is known about the competitive kinetics of different BCPs crystallizing on a common seed. Here we report a systematic study of the competitive seeded growth kinetics of pairs of linear PFS-containing BCPs and show that one can manipulate the kinetics to control the morphology of the comicelles. We found that the seeded-growth kinetics of the individual BCP unimer dominates the coassembly behavior and thus the morphology of the corona. Patchy comicelles with microphase-segregated corona chains are formed when the epitaxial growth rates of the two different BCPs on the common seed are similar. In contrast, factors that lead to dissimilar growth rates (long corona-forming blocks or introduction of charges on corona-forming chains) promote large-scale separation of the corona blocks, leading to block comicelles. Because the termini of the comicelles remain living, they can further direct the growth of unimers, resulting in hierarchical block comicelles with patchy blocks and single-component (homo) blocks. Furthermore, the patchy comicelles can be loaded with either gold or platinum nanoparticles, generating organic-inorganic hybrid materials with potential application in catalysis.
Manipulation of Self-Assembled Nanostructure Dimensions in Molecular Janus Particles.

Abstract:The ability to manipulate self-assembly of molecular building blocks is the key to achieving precise "bottom-up" fabrications of desired nanostructures. Herein, we report a rational design, facile synthesis, and self-assembly of a series of molecular Janus particles (MJPs) constructed by chemically linking α-Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) nanoclusters with functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cages. Diverse nanostructures were obtained by tuning secondary interactions among the building blocks and solvents via three factors: solvent polarity, surface functionality of POSS derivatives, and molecular topology. Self-assembled morphologies of KPOM-BPOSS (B denotes isobutyl groups) were found dependent on solvent polarity. In acetonitrile/water mixtures with a high dielectric constant, colloidal nanoparticles with nanophase-separated internal lamellar structures quickly formed, which gradually turned into one-dimensional nanobelt crystals upon aging, while stacked crystalline lamellae were dominantly observed in less polar methanol/chloroform solutions. When the crystallizable BPOSS was replaced with noncrystallizable cyclohexyl-functionalized CPOSS, the resulting KPOM-CPOSS also formed colloidal spheres; however, it failed to further evolve into crystalline nanobelt structures. In less polar solvents, KPOM-CPOSS crystallized into isolated two-dimensional nanosheets, which were composed of two inner crystalline layers of Keggin POM covered by two monolayers of amorphous CPOSS. In contrast, self-assembly of KPOM-2BPOSS was dominated by crystallization of the BPOSS cages, which was hardly sensitive to solvent polarity. The BPOSS cages formed the crystalline inner bilayer, sandwiched by two outer layers of Keggin POM clusters. These results illustrate a rational strategy to purposely fabricate self-assembled nanostructures with diverse dimensionality from MJPs with controlled molecular composition and topology.
Microphase Separation Facilitating and Stabilizing Hierarchical Segment Self-Assembly of Combined Main-Chain/Side-Chain Liquid Crystalline Polymer in Diblock Copolymer

Abstract:A series of diblock copolymers (PS-b-PBBHCSs) composed of polystyrene (PS) and poly(2,5-bis{[6-(4-butoxy-4'-oxybiphenyl)hexyl]oxycarbonyl}styrene) (PBBHCS) were successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization, with their chemical structures confirmed by various characterization techniques. While PS is a conventional coil polymer, PBBHCS is a novel combined main-chain/side-chain liquid crystalline polymer (MCSCLCP) which can exhibit hierarchically ordered structures. Small-angle X-ray scattering results show that the diblock copolymers with different compositions could present lamellar and rectangular cylinder morphologies before the order-disorder transition. Combining the differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray scattering results, we find that the PBBHCS block in the confined space of microphase separation is still able to exhibit its liquid crystalline (LC) structures with the rectangular main-chain scaffold on the nanometer scale and the side-chain ordering on the subnanometer scale, which is the same as that of the homo-PBBHCS. Therefore, a three-length scale ordered hierarchical structure can be observed in the system we studied, namely, the microphase separation and the double-length scale LC structure of the MCSCLCP. The LC structure of PBBHCS is more stable in the diblock copolymer than that in the homopolymer with similar molecular weights. Therefore, not only PS-b-PBBHCS can fabricate more complex hierarchy structure but also the microphase separation can stabilize the hierarchical assembly of PBBHCS in the nanodomains.
Assembly of polymeric micelles into hollow microcapsules with extraordinary stability against extreme pH conditions.

Abstract:Hollow microcapsules containing polymeric micelles in their walls were fabricated by alternating assembly of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrene-b-acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) micelles on MnCO3 microparticles followed by sacrificing the templates in acid solution. The successful formation of PAH/micelle multilayers on both planar and curved substrates was confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and xi-potential measurements. The PS-b-PAA micelles retained their structure during the whole assembly process. The as-prepared microcapsules showed extraordinary stability against concentrated HCl (37%) and 0.1 M NaOH solutions. No variation in capsule size or shape was observed in acidic solution, while slight swelling and distortion of the capsules took place in alkaline solution. However, these capsules completely recovered their original size and morphology after being incubated in acidic solution again. The microcapsules, in which large voids exist between the micelle grains on the walls, were totally permeable to fluorescein-tagged dextran with an M-w of 2000 kDa. Assembly of additional PAH/poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) multilayers could substantially reduce the permeation of the same molecules. These multicompartmental capsules combine polymeric micelles with multilayer polyelectrolyte microcapsules and could possibly be imparted with multifunctions, thus possibly finding diverse applications in the fields of drug delivery, biosensing, and nanobiotechnology.
