Abstract:Background: The benefits of involving those with lived experience in the design and development of health technology are well recognized, and the reporting of co-design best practices has increased over the past decade. However, it is important to recognize that the methods and protocols behind patient and public involvement and co-design vary depending on the patient population accessed. This is especially important when considering individuals living with cognitive impairments, such as dementia, who are likely to have needs and experiences unique to their cognitive capabilities. We worked alongside individuals living with dementia and their care partners to co-design a mobile health app. This app aimed to address a gap in our knowledge of how cognition fluctuates over short, microlongitudinal timescales. The app requires users to interact with built-in memory tests multiple times per day, meaning that co-designing a platform that is easy to use, accessible, and appealing is particularly important. Here, we discuss our use of Agile methodology to enable those living with dementia and their care partners to be actively involved in the co-design of a mobile health app. Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the benefits of co-design in the development of smartphone apps. Here, we share our co-design methodology and reflections on how this benefited the completed product. Methods: Our app was developed using Agile methodology, which allowed for patient and care partner input to be incorporated iteratively throughout the design and development process. Our co-design approach comprised 3 core elements, aligned with the values of patient co-design and adapted to meaningfully involve those living with cognitive impairments: end-user representation at research and software development meetings via a patient proxy; equal decision-making power for all stakeholders based on their expertise; and continuous user consultation, user-testing, and feedback. Results: This co-design approach resulted in multiple patient and care partner-led software alterations, which, without consultation, would not have been anticipated by the research team. This included 13 software design alterations, renaming of the product, and removal of a cognitive test deemed to be too challenging for the target demographic. Conclusions: We found patient and care partner input to be critical throughout the development process for early identification of design and usability issues and for identifying solutions not previously considered by our research team. As issues addressed in early co-design workshops did not reoccur subsequently, we believe this process made our product more user-friendly and acceptable, and we will formally test this assumption through future pilot-testing.
Co-design of a digital app "WhatMatters" to support person-centred care: A critical reflection

Abstract:Background: People with dementia often do not receive optimal person-centred care (PCC) in care settings. Family members can play a vital role as care partners to support the person with dementia with their psychosocial needs. Participatory research that includes the perspectives of those with lived experience is essential for developing high-quality dementia care and practices. Objective: Throughout 2021-2022, a mobile app, called WhatMatters, was co-developed to provide easy-to-access and personalised support for people with dementia in hospitals and long-term care homes, with input from patients/residents, family partners and healthcare staff. This article discusses and critically reflects on the experiences of patients/residents, family partners, and healthcare staff involved in the co-design process. Methods: For the app development, we applied a participatory co-design approach, guided by a User Experience (UX) model. The process involved co-design workshops and user testing sessions with users (patients/residents, family partners, healthcare staff) to co-develop the WhatMatters prototype. We also conducted focus groups and one on one interviews with staff and caregiver participants to explore their experiences. Our research team, which also included patient partners, took part in regular team meetings during the app's development, where we discussed and reflected on the co-design process. Reflexive thematic analysis was performed to identify themes that represent the challenges and rewarding experiences of the users involved in the co-design process, which guided our overall reflective process. Findings: Our reflective analysis identified five themes (1) clarifying the co-design process, (2) ensuring inclusive collaborations of various users, and (3) supporting expression of emotion in a virtual environment, (4) feeling a sense of achievement and (5) feeling valued. Implications: WhatMatters offers potential for providing personally relevant and engaging resources in dementia care. Including the voices of relevant users is crucial to ensure meaningful benefits for patients/residents. We offer insights and lessons learned about the co-design process, and explore the challenges of involving people with lived experiences of dementia in co-design work, particularly during the pandemic.

Abstract:Background People living with dementia should be at the center of decision-making regarding their plans and goals for daily living and meaningful activities that help promote health and mental well-being. The human–computer interaction community has recently begun to recognize the need to design technologies where the person living with dementia is an active rather than a passive user of technology in the management of their care. Methods Data collection comprised semi-structured interviews and focus groups held with dyads of people with early-stage dementia (n = 5) and their informal carers (n = 4), as well as health professionals (n = 5). This article discusses findings from the thematic analysis of this qualitative data. Results Analysis resulted in the construction of three main themes: (1) maintaining a sense of purpose and identity, (2) learning helplessness and (3) shared decision-making and collaboration. Within each of the three main themes, related sub-themes were also constructed. Discussion There is a need to design technologies for persons living with dementia/carer dyads that can support collaborative care planning and engagement in meaningful activities while also balancing persons living with dementia empowerment and active engagement in self-management with carer support.

Abstract:Objective: To review the qualitative literature on mobile health applications for people with dementia.Methods: A systematic review was undertaken. Five databases were searched using relevant keywords. Titles, abstracts and full-text papers were screened independently by two reviewers. Data extraction and quality assessment were conducted. Analysis was guided by framework synthesis and underpinned by the Digital Health Engagement Model.Results: Nine studies were included. Three themes emerged around the experiences of people with dementia when using health apps. The technology seemed to improve some aspects of physical, mental and social health such as stimulating cognitive function and communication skills. When implementing health applications with persons with dementia six themes came to light. How well an application or mobile device was designed and the quality of information on it, seemed to influence use. Digital knowledge and skills were also needed to engage with the technology. One's personal lifestyle and agency were other relevant factors affecting implementation, along with the health of an individual with dementia.Conclusion: Further research examining the efficacy of health apps for people with dementia is required. Utilizing co-design approaches to create mobile technology with those with dementia should also be considered.PROSPERO Registration Number: CRD42015029846

Abstract:Abstract There has been an emergence in technology applications (apps) aimed at addressing needs amongst older adults and persons with cognitive impairment (PwCI). Despite the ubiquity of these apps, utilization is low, primarily due to a lack of involvement of PwCI and the perception that these apps have little motivational value. Engaging PwCI in creative processes such as co-design could lead to the creation of apps that better meets the needs of this population. The current study applies a user-centered, participatory approach to involve PwCI in the design of a new self-management and coaching app, RESILIEN-T. Co-design workshops were held with 12 PwCI across Italy, Netherlands and Canada; structured as four modules: (1) introduction and expectation setting, (2) user analysis, (3) storytelling, and (4) collaborative design. Based on interviews with PwCI, stories of individuals which reflect the target population were created (personas) and the solutions to the needs of these personas were discussed. Information about participant’s interests, computer proficiency and self-rated cognitive decline were collected. Participants were asked to try 10 existing apps and provided feedback on the design, usability and functionality. Lastly, participants were shown a prototype for RESILIEN-T and provided feedback based on the personas that they helped create. Co-design activities revealed that personalization is crucial for adherence. Aspects of physical and social activity, nutrition and cognition were most important to participants. Participants found many apps that are recommended for older adults do not appear age appropriate and seem condescending. These findings were common across PwCI from various nations.

Abstract:Objective: Researchers have used various theories and models to understand technology adoption, however, with the growing interest and availability of mobile applications (apps) for people living with dementia, it is desirable to have a broader insight into how technology adoption may be further improved. This paper aims to explore the factors influencing the adoption of digital health applications for people living with dementia and add to the current literature on this topic. Methods: Searches were conducted in CINHAL, Web of Science, Psych Info, ProQuest Health and Medical, IEEE Xplore and Scopus. Citation searching and handsearching were used in the identification of other studies. Results: Following an assessment of relevancy, nine studies remained and are included within this review. Methodological quality was assessed using The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). A thematic analysis was used for the data synthesis of included studies. Each study reported on different types of apps. Conclusion: From the synthesis of included studies, four analytic themes were identified; Theme 1: Personal and contextual factors; Theme 2: Perceived value and benefit; Theme 3: Design and content of app; and Theme 4: Digital Literacy and Confidence. People are diverse and so are their reasons for the adoption of apps. These findings provide an insight into the range of factors that impact the adoption of apps for people living with dementia. Understanding the factors that impact the adoption of mobile applications is critical to their success. These findings can be beneficial for app developers and for people living with dementia and their carers.

Abstract:Abstract Background In Ireland, the number of people living with dementia is projected to treble by 2050. National dementia education programmes span all care groups and areas of work, and include a 4-hour, a 2-day programme and HSEland modules. However, there is concern that these programmes often adopt a pedagogical approach that does not meet the needs of modern learners. Adopting a coproduction approach in designing dementia education initiatives is essential to ensuring that these programmes effectively impact healthcare professional’s attitudes, beliefs and care practices, meeting the needs of people from diverse populations and cultural backgrounds. Methods Methods included three key components: Firstly, a dementia education online survey for facilitators of national programmes to ascertain the benefits, challenges and impact on care practices. Secondly, a national event using World Café methodology to share insights and ideas and co-produce a vision for advancing dementia education in Ireland. Primary stakeholders included individuals living with dementia, their advocates, and delegates from various demographics and cultural backgrounds. Thirdly, a review of literature relating to dementia education in other jurisdictions. Results Key themes that emerged include the significance of understanding the lived experience and recognising diversity and cultural differences. Additionally, there is a need to explore various teaching and delivery methods, such as incorporating technology, simulation, and a tiered approach. There was general agreement that co designing a more adaptable, interactive national programme, including the lived experience of people with dementia would be more impactful. Challenges identified include staff turnover, difficulties releasing staff from clinical areas and organisational culture. Conclusion Through establishing an inclusive and collaborative platform, we can collectively shape a future where dementia education and care practices are compassionate, rights based and supportive. Crucially, people living with dementia and their supporters are at the heart of planning and decision-making processes in co-designing dementia education initiatives.

Abstract:Background The cocreation of eHealth solutions with potential users, or co-design, can help make the solution more acceptable. However, the co-design research approach requires substantial investment, and projects are not always fruitful. Researchers have provided guidelines for the co-design approach, but these are either applicable only in specific situations or not supported by empirical data. Ways to optimize the experience of the co-design process from the point of view of the participants are also missing. Scientific literature in the co-design field generally provides an extrinsic description of the experience of participants in co-design projects. Objective We addressed this issue by describing a co-design project and focusing on the participants’ experiences looking at what was significant from their point of view. Methods We used a qualitative situated cognitive anthropology approach for this study. Data were collected on a co-design research project that aimed to support the help-seeking process of caregivers of functionally dependent older adults. The methodology was based on the perspective of experience by Dewey and used the course-of-action theoretical and methodological framework. Data collection was conducted in 2 phases: observation of participants and recording of sessions and participant self-confrontation interviews using the session recordings. We interviewed 27% (20/74) of the participants. We analyzed the data through nonexclusive emerging categorization of themes using the constant comparative method. Results In total, 5 emerging themes were identified. The perception of extrinsic constraints and the effects of the situation was central and the most important theme, affecting other themes (frustrating interactions with others, learning together, destabilization, and getting personal benefits). Co-occurrences between codes allowed for a visual and narrative understanding of what was significant for the participants during this project. The results highlighted the importance of the role of the research team in preparing and moderating the sessions. They also provided a detailed description of the interactions between participants during the sessions, which is a core aspect of the co-design approach. There were positive and negative aspects of the participants’ experiences during this co-design project. Reflecting on our results, we provided potential affordances to shape the experience of participants in co-design. Conclusions Potential users are an essential component of the co-design research approach. Researchers and designers should seek to offer these users a positive and contributory experience to encourage participation in further co-design initiatives. Future research should explore how the proposed affordances influence the success of the intervention.
Smart Home Sensing and Monitoring in Households With Dementia: User-Centered Design Approach

Abstract:Background As life expectancy grows, so do the challenges of caring for an aging population. Older adults, including people with dementia, want to live independently and feel in control of their lives for as long as possible. Assistive technologies powered by artificial intelligence and internet of things devices are being proposed to provide living environments that support the users’ safety, psychological, and medical needs through remote monitoring and interventions. Objective This study investigates the functional, psychosocial, and environmental needs of people living with dementia, their caregivers, clinicians, and health and social care service providers toward the design and implementation of smart home systems. Methods We used an iterative user-centered design approach comprising 9 substudies. First, semistructured interviews (9 people with dementia, 9 caregivers, and 10 academic and clinical staff) and workshops (35 pairs of people with dementia and caregivers, and 12 health and social care clinicians) were conducted to define the needs of people with dementia, home caregivers, and professional stakeholders in both daily activities and technology-specific interactions. Then, the spectrum of needs identified was represented via patient–caregiver personas and discussed with stakeholders in a workshop (14 occupational therapists; 4 National Health Service pathway directors; and 6 researchers in occupational therapy, neuropsychiatry, and engineering) and 2 focus groups with managers of health care services (n=8), eliciting opportunities for innovative care technologies and public health strategies. Finally, these design opportunities were discussed in semistructured interviews with participants of a smart home trial involving environmental sensors, physiological measurement devices, smartwatches, and tablet-based chatbots and cognitive assessment puzzles (10 caregivers and 2 people with dementia). A thematic analysis revealed factors that motivate household members to use these technologies. Results Outcomes of these activities include a qualitative and quantitative analysis of patient, caregiver, and clinician needs and the identification of challenges and opportunities for the design and implementation of remote monitoring systems in public health pathways. Conclusions Participatory design methods supported the triangulation of stakeholder perspectives to aid the development of more patient-centered interventions and their translation to clinical practice and public health strategy. We discuss the implications and limitations of our findings, the value and the applicability of our methodology, and directions for future research.

Abstract:Background: Current policy emphasises the role of digital technologies in facilitating the management of long-term conditions. While digital resources have been developed for carers, there has been little attention to their development for people with dementia. The Caregiverspro-MMD website was developed as a joint resource for people with dementia and carers, delivering access to information, informal content, games and peer support. Research Design and Methods: This study explored the experiences of dyads consisting of people with dementia and carers of using the website. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with 43 participants. Findings: Thematic analysis identified 10 subthemes grouped under three superordinate themes which highlight participants’ experiences of and responses to the website functions; important aspects of the website design and delivery; and barriers to use. Discussion: Findings highlight the value of a credible information source which negated the need for arduous online searches, the pleasure associated with playing games and interacting with others online. However, participants were reluctant to share personal information online, preferring to create ‘informal content’ which celebrated everyday life, and were reluctant to ‘friend’ people online who they had not met in person. The importance of training and support to use the website was highlighted. Health problems, lack of interest or difficulties using technology, and time were all identified as barriers to use.
Use of mobile applications and health technologies among dementia caregivers with chronic conditions: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Objective: Almost 80% of people, who are caring for someone with dementia, have one or more chronic conditions and require self-management support. New technologies offer promising solutions; however, little is known about what technologies caregivers use for their health or in general. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of mobile application (app) and health-related technology use among caregivers who have chronic conditions and care for someone with dementia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 122 caregivers recruited online and from communities in the Baltimore-metropolitan area. Data were collected with online surveys and computer-assisted telephone interviews. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze survey data. Results: Study participants were primarily female (95 of 122, 77.9%), middle-aged (average 53 years, standard deviation (SD) 17), well educated (average 16 years, SD 3.3), an adult child of the person with dementia (53 of 122, 43.4%), and had 4 chronic conditions on average (SD 2.6). Over 90% of caregivers used mobile apps (116 of 122), spending a range of 9 to 82 min on each app. Most caregivers reported using social media apps (96 of 116, 82.8%), weather apps (96 of 116, 82.8%), and/or music or entertainment apps (89 of 116, 76.7%). Among caregivers using each app type, more than half of caregivers used social media (66 of 96, 69%), games (49 of 74, 66%), weather (62 of 96, 65%), and/or music or entertainment apps (51 of 89, 57%) daily. Caregivers also used several technologies to support their own health-the most common being websites, mobile devices, and health-related mobile apps. Conclusion: This study supports the feasibility of using technologies to promote health behavior change and support self-management among caregivers.

Abstract:Background People with dementia have complex palliative care needs that are often unmet, including physical and psycho‐social needs. It is essential to empower people with dementia, family carers and professionals to better assess and manage care needs. We aimed to co‐design a palliative dementia care Framework delivered through a digital app to support holistic assessment and decision making for care in the community and care homes—the EMBED‐Care Framework. Methods A systematic co‐design approach was adopted to develop the EMBED‐Care Framework across three stages: 1) Framework analysis to synthesise data from preceding evidence reviews, large routine clinical data and cohort studies of unmet palliative dementia care need; 2) Co‐design using iterative workshops with people with dementia, family carers and health and social care professionals to construct the components, design of the app and implementation requirements; and 3) User testing to refine the final Framework and app, and strengthen use for clinical practice and methods of evaluation. Results The Framework was co‐designed for delivery through an app delivered by aTouchAway. It comprised five main components: 1) holistic assessment of palliative care needs using the Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale‐Dementia (IPOS‐Dem); 2) alert system of IPOS‐Dem scores to highlight unmet needs; 3) IPOS‐Dem scores and alerts enable shared decision making between the practitioner, patient and/or carer to support priority setting and goals of care; 4) evidence‐informed clinical decision support tools automatically linked with identified needs to manage care; and 5) Training package for users incorporating face‐to‐face sessions, clinical champions who received additional face‐to‐face sessions, animated videos and manual covering the main intervention components and email and telephone support from the research team. Conclusions This is a novel digital palliative dementia care intervention to link holistic assessment with clinical decision support tools that are practical and easy to use but address the complexity of palliative dementia care. The Framework is ready for feasibility testing and pilot studies for people with dementia residing at home or in a care home. Patient or Public Contribution We were guided by our Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) group consisting of three people with mild dementia, including younger onset dementia, and seven family carers throughout the project. They supported the overall development of the Framework, including planning of workshops, interpreting findings and testing the framework in our PPI meetings.

Abstract:Family caregivers of persons living with dementia (PLWD) are often expected to coordinate and manage all aspects of a loved one's day-to-day care across settings with limited modern, user-friendly resources to support them. We developed CareMOBI, a mHealth app prototype that aims to support improved care coordination and communication between care team members. A concurrent mixed-methods triangulation design was used to assess the acceptability and likelihood of adopting CareMOBI among family caregivers of PLWD. Caregivers (n = 13) completed the Technology Acceptance Model questionnaire (quantitative) and semi-structured interviews (qualitative). Integration occurred using the four themes of the Technology Acceptance Model. There was strong agreement among family caregivers that CareMOBI had a high perceived value for care (M = 6.23/7), was easy to use (M = 6.20/7), and enhanced current workflows (M = 5.86/7). However, training in utilizing mHealth apps and the need for a Spanish-language version were cited as necessary enhancements to increase the widespread adoption of CareMOBI.

Abstract:Background Immigrant caregivers support the aging population, yet their own needs are often neglected. Mobile technology-facilitated interventions can promote caregiver health by providing easy access to self-care materials. Objective This study employed a design thinking framework to examine Chinese immigrant caregivers' (CICs) unmet self-care needs and co-design an app for promoting self-care with CICs. Methods Nineteen semi-structured interviews were conducted in conceptual design and prototype co-design phases. Findings Participants reported unmet self-care needs influenced by psychological and social barriers, immigrant status, and caregiving tasks. They expressed the need to learn to keep healthy boundaries with the care recipient and respond to emergencies. Gaining knowledge was the main benefit that drew CICs' interest in using the self-care app. However, potential barriers to use included issues of curriculum design, technology anxiety, limited free time, and caregiving burdens. Discussion The co-design process appears to be beneficial in having participants voice both barriers and preferences.

Bringing Healthy Aging to Scale: A Randomized Trial of a Quality Improvement Intervention to Increase Adoption of Evidence-Based Health Promotion Programs by Community Partners

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a quality improvement intervention to increase delivery of 2 evidence-based health promotion workshops, Stepping On and Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP), in rural communities. Design: A cluster-randomized wait-list control group design. Setting: Rural Wisconsin counties with trained workshop leaders but no workshops in the prior year were eligible to participate. Intervention: Sixteen counties were randomized to receive the NIATx intervention or wait-list control. The 1-year intervention consisted of training and coaching county aging unit staff to apply NIATx methods to increase and sustain the number of Stepping On or CDSMP workshops in their community. Main Outcomes: Mann-Whitney tests examined effect on workshops held, participants, and workshop completers. The paired Wilcoxon signed rank test explored change in participants' health behaviors and health care utilization. Results: Counties receiving the NIATx intervention significantly increased the number of workshops per county per year as compared with baseline (1.5 vs 0.19, P < .001) and sustained improvements during the year following the intervention. Stepping On participants, during the 6 months postintervention, had reduced falls risk behaviors (P < .001), 0.43 fewer falls (P < .01), and 0.028 fewer medical record–verified emergency department visits for falls-related injuries (P < .05) compared with the 6 months before the intervention. CDSMP participants had reduced social isolation (P = .018) and improved physician communication skills (P = .005). Implications: Our study demonstrates that coaching rural service organizations in use of the quality improvement process, NIATx, may increase implementation reach of evidence-based health promotion/disease prevention programs. Initiative findings indicate that this approach may be a new and potentially important strategy to increase reach of health promotion programs for older adults in community settings. Conclusion: A quality improvement approach effectively increases and sustains delivery of evidence-based health promotion/workshops for older adults in rural communities. Counties or states struggling to engage older adults in evidence-based health promotion workshops could integrate quality improvement into policies and practices to increase workshop availability. Once engaged, older adults experience improved health behaviors from both programs and reduced falls and emergency department utilization from Stepping On.

Abstract:The preliminary results of the Achilles Project data from Europe and East Asia were used to permit a more accurate estimate of the epidemiology of onychomycosis, the leading clinical features, and the most important predisposing factors of fungal foot infections. The Achilles foot-screening project is a scientific project to investigate the prevalence and seriousness of foot problems across Europe and East Asia. This project can be divided into two groups: a survey consisting of a clinical examination of the feet, and a study with a mycologic examination if an infection of the feet was suspected. Compared to other epidemiologic studies, a considerably larger population was screened; 80 396 subjects were examined: 13 695 in the European Study, 22 760 in the European Survey and 43 914 in the East Asian Survey. The clinical diagnosis of the physician was confirmed by a mycologic examination in the European study. Microscopic examination and culture were performed in order to identify the pathogen causing the fungal infection because this information is essential for the physician to choose the optimal treatment. The prevalence of foot diseases and, more specifically, of fungal infection is higher than imagined in this kind of population, i.e. patients who visit their physician for other problems than those with their feet. Dermatophytes were the most prevalent pathogens, especially Tricophyton rubrum, but yeasts like Candida albicanswere also possible infectious agents. Non-dermatophyte molds likeAspergillus

Abstract:BACKGROUND: People with dementia frequently suffer from communication disabilities, which usually influence their quality of life. The communication disabilities may affect a person's possibility to participate in interaction as a result of reduced ability to initiate new topics and difficulties in contributing new information to maintain the conversational topic. Technical aids have been proved useful to facilitate communicative activities by supporting memory and stimulating communicative initiatives.PURPOSE: The aim of the present study is to further understandings of how digital communication support may be used in interaction involving people with dementia. A further aim is to investigate how participants experience communication with and without the use of communication aids.METHODS: The study is carried out in a Swedish context, and three dyads of older women with dementia and professional carers participated in the study. The dyads interact in the home environments of the persons with dementia using tablet computers and two web-based applications with generic pictures, videos, and music files (Computer Interactive Reminiscence and Communication Aid, CIRCA) and personalised pictures and films (Computer Interactive Reminiscence and Communication University of Sheffield, CIRCUS). The data include twenty-one video recorded activities.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The applications appear to provide support for the dyads in finding things to talk about. The participants talk both about the material and memories associated with the material. The participants experience the use of communication aids as positive.

Technology Usability for People Living With Dementia: Concept Analysis

Abstract:Background: Usability is a key indicator of the quality of technology products. In tandem with technological advancements, potential use by individuals with dementia is increasing. However, defining the usability of technology for individuals with dementia remains an ongoing challenge. The diverse and progressive nature of dementia adds complexity to the creation of universal usability criteria, highlighting the need for focused deliberations. Technological interventions offer potential benefits for people living with dementia and caregivers. Amid COVID-19, technology's role in health care access is growing, especially among older adults. Enabling the diverse population of people living with dementia to enjoy the benefits of technologies requires particular attention to their needs, desires, capabilities, and vulnerabilities to potential harm from technologies. Successful technological interventions for dementia require meticulous consideration of technology usability. Objective: This concept analysis aims to examine the usability of technology in the context of individuals living with dementia to establish a clear definition for usability within this specific demographic. Methods: The framework by Walker and Avant was used to guide this concept analysis. We conducted a literature review spanning 1984 to 2024, exploring technology usability for people with dementia through the PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases using the keywords "technology usability" and "dementia." We also incorporated clinical definitions and integrated interview data from 29 dyads comprising individuals with mild Alzheimer dementia and their respective care partners, resulting in a total of 58 older adults. This approach aimed to offer a more comprehensive portrayal of the usability needs of individuals living with dementia, emphasizing practical application. Results: The evidence from the literature review unveiled that usability encompasses attributes such as acceptable learnability, efficiency, and satisfaction. The clinical perspective on dementia stages, subtypes, and symptoms underscores the importance of tailored technology usability assessment. Feedback from 29 dyads also emphasized the value of simplicity, clear navigation, age-sensitive design, personalized features, and audio support. Thus, design should prioritize personalized assistance for individuals living with dementia, moving away from standardized technological approaches. Synthesized from various sources, the defined usability attributes for individuals living with dementia not only encompass the general usability properties of effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction but also include other key factors: adaptability, personalization, intuitiveness, and simplicity, to ensure that technology is supportive and yields tangible benefits for this demographic. Conclusions: Usability is crucial for people living with dementia when designing technological interventions. It necessitates an understanding of user characteristics, dementia stages, symptoms, needs, and tasks, as well as consideration of varied physical requirements, potential sensory loss, and age-related changes. Disease progression requires adapting to evolving symptoms. Recommendations include versatile, multifunctional technology designs; accommodating diverse needs; and adjusting software functionalities for personalization. Product feature classification can be flexible based on user conditions.
