Abstract:Co-production of hydrogen and methane by two-phase anaerobic digestion (AD) may offer a sustainable solution for the centralized treatment of food waste (FW), while ammonia accumulation is potentially encountered. A mesophilic two-phase AD was investigated for hydrogen and methane production from FW at varying ammonia concentrations. The process achieved a hydrogen yield of 47.7 mL/g VS and a methane yield of 335 mL/g VS by optimizing the organic loading rate (OLR) and recirculation ratio. Total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) concentration of 4044 mg/L corresponded to a threshold in the hydrogen reactor, above which ammonia would initiate inhibition of hydrogenogenesis and acidogenesis. Methane yield was recovered in the methane reactor after acute inhibiting effects of TAN below 5800 mg/L, while TAN above 6200 mg/L caused chronic inhibition of methanogens. Adjusting hydraulic retention time (HRT) and recirculation ratio in hydrogen and methane Methanogenesis reactors reduced TAN to 960 and 2105 mg/L respectively, resulting in successful recovery was achieved in the hydrogen reactor but not in the methane reactor. Effect of Hydraulic Retention Time on Continuous Biohydrogen Production by the Codigestion of Brewery Wastewater and Cheese Whey

Abstract:This paper aims to study dark fermentation (DF) in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor during 20 cycles operating at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 3, 9, and 12 h using substrate wastewater from the food industry and granular inoculum sludge from a treatment plant as codigestion to explore the relationship between substrates, metabolites, and microorganisms to increase the biohydrogen (BioH2) yield. Operation conditions were constant pH 5.50 ± 0.50, T = 35 °C and a carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 30. It is noteworthy that DF with HRT = 9 h obtained the highest yields of organic matter degradation, and BioH2 in biogas (~60%) was attributed to the adjustment of pH and the codigestion buffer capacity. During DF with HRT = 9, the reactor was 11 times more productive with regards to HRT = 3 h, resulting in its performance with a better yield mean (6.22 mmol H2 g COD−1) and productivity (0.35 LH2 L−1 d) than other HRTs with lower records of 0.42 mmol H2 g COD−1 and 0.05 LH2 L−1 d, respectively. The high abundance of native populations (Lactobacillus and Lactococcus) and intrinsic inoculum (Citrobacter) led to the highest BioH2 production. Most of the production of acetic acid ~590 mg L−1 and butyric acid ~450 mg L−1 confirmed that BioH2 is mainly produced by acetic and butyric metabolic routes, and a direct relation with the percentage of retention of total suspended solids was also found, supporting the biodegradation capacity of the process.

Suicidal behavior trends in a pediatric population in Hawai'i.

Abstract:In this retrospective 2-year study the clinical and demographic characteristics of pediatric patients in Hawai'i evaluated for suicide attempts (or possible suicide attempts) at a local children's hospital were examined. Our intentions were to uncover any trends in this unique, culturally diverse population that has not been studied extensively. Sixty-five patients were identified, of which 86% were girls with the highest age demographic at 15-16 years of age (34%) and medication overdose the most common mechanism. Ethnicity trends could not reliably be ascertained. The circumstances surrounding the suicidal behavior; adjustment disorder being a common diagnosis; and approximately half of the population not intending to complete suicide suggests possible impulsivity. Thus, the results have the potential to direct interventions for community suicide prevention programs in Hawai'i, with a focus on coping strategies and medication overdose education.

Abstract:Two continuously stirred tank reactors were operated with household solid waste at 70°C, for hydrogen and methane production. The individual effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT as 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 days) at pH 7 or pH (5, 5.5, 6, 6.5, 7) at 3‐day HRT was investigated on the hydrogen production versus methanogenesis. It was found that at pH 7, the maximum hydrogen yield was 107 mL‐H2/g VSadded (volatile solid added) but no stable hydrogen production was obtained as after some time methanogenesis was initiated at all tested HRTs. This demonstrated that sludge retention time alone was not enough for washing out the methanogens at pH 7 under extreme‐thermophilic conditions. Oppositely, we showed that keeping the pH level at 5.5 was enough to inhibit methane and produce hydrogen stably at 3‐day HRT. In-Depth Observations of Fermentative Hydrogen Production from Liquid Swine Manure Using an Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor

Abstract:In this study, experiments were designed to reveal in-depth information of the effect of pH and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on biohydrogen fermentation from liquid swine manure supplemented with glucose using an Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor (ASBR) System. Five values of HRT (8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 h) were first tested and the best HRT determined was further studied at five pH levels (4.4, 4.7, 5.0, 5.3, and 5.6). The results showed that for HRT 24 h, there was a dividing H-2 content (around 37%) related to the total biogas production rate for the ASBR System running at pH 5.0. When the H-2 content went beyond 37%, an appreciable decline in biogas production rate was observed, implying that there might exist an H-2 content limit in the biogas. For other HRTs (8 through 20 h), an average H-2 content of 42% could be achieved. In the second experiment (HRT 12 h), the highest H-2 content (35%) in the biogas was found to be associated with pH 5.0. The upswing of pH from 5.0 to 5.6 had a significantly more impact on biogas H-2 content than the downswing of pH from 5.0 to 4.3. The results also indicated good linear relationships of biogas and H-2 production rates with HRT (r=0.9971 and 0.9967, respectively). Since the optimal ASBR operating conditions were different for the biogas/H-2 production rates and the H-2 yield, a compromised combination of the running parameters was determined to be HRT 12 h and pH 5.0 in order to achieve good biogas/H-2 productions.

Abstract:Effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the acidogenesis of dairy wastewater was studied using an upflow reactor at pH 5.5, 37 degreesC, and six HRTs ranging from 4 to 24 h. Results showed that the degree of acidification increased rapidly with HRT from 28.2% at 4 h to 54.1% at 12 h; further increase of HRT to 16 and 24 h only increased acidification slightly to 55.8 and 59.1%, respectively. The biodegradability of the three major constituents in dairy wastewater increased with HRT, following the order of carbohydrates > proteins > lipids. The predominant products were acetate, propionate, butyrate, lactate, and ethanol.

Abstract:Cheese whey wastewater (CWW) is the major by-product of the dairy industry. CWW is produced in large quantities, has varied characteristics and is usually disposed of. The disposal of CWW causes a negative impact on the environment of different agroindustrial areas due to the physic-chemical composition that significantly increases its high organic load and nutrients. For this reason, the aim of this work was to carry out an evaluation of the anaerobic treatability of an Expanded Granular Sludge Bed (EGSB) bioreactor as a new sustainable alternative for treatment of these effluents with bioenergy production. In this study, the bioreactor was operated under stable conditions (i.e., buffer index of 0.23 ± 0.1, pH 7.22 ± 0.4 and temperature 26.6 ± 1.4 °C) for 201 days. During evaluation the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 6 and 8 days, and it was buffered with NaHCO3. At these conditions, the COD removal rate and biochemical methane potential (BMP) were 90, 92%; and 334, 328 mLCH4/gCOD, respectively. The evidence found in this study highlighted that the CWW is a viable substrate to be treated in the EGSB bioreactor as long as it keeps buffered. Furthermore, the process to treat the CWW in an EGSB bioreactor can be a sustainable alternative to simultaneously solve the environmental pollution that this agro-industry confronts and produce renewable and environmentally-friendly bioenergy.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel technique to increase hydrogen production from dark fermentation of cheese whey, conducted using open mixed cultures. Hydrogen (H2)-producing microbial pools were selected and enriched using an innovative biostimulation technique, performed by sequential re-inocula of the interstitial microbial community using porous supports in sequential batch reactors. The supports offered a spatial refuge to the microbial community, facilitated re-inoculum procedures and reduce operational disturbance. Two different re-inoculum times (i.e. 24 h and 96 h) were tested to verify the influence of timing on the selection/enrichment. Results showed that the H2 production rate was up to 80 times higher using a 24 h re-inoculum time than using a 96 h re-inoculum time. Under a 24 h re-inoculum time, a stable H2 production rate was reached after two sequential re-inocula, with values ranging between 4 and 6.1 mLH2 h−1. The cumulative production, detected after the last re-inoculum (8 days), was 2.2 LH2 L-1 reactor, corresponding to 42.5 mL gCOD-1. A very low methane (CH4) production was observed and only in the first two re-inocula, as short re-inoculum intervals favoured H2-producing bacteria. Microbiological analyses confirmed that subsequent re-inocula contributed to an increase in total microbial abundance. The proposed approach provides a concentrated inoculum in liquid medium (which is easy to use) exploiting an enrichment technique that is conceptually new and more economical/environmentally friendly than conventional thermal, acid or alkaline enrichment techniques.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass and agricultural residues rich in carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins are promising sources for renewable energy production, particularly in the field of biofuel. Goat manure (GM) is a suitable raw material for the anaerobic digestion process owing to its high total nitrogen content, besides providing stability to fermentation. However, its utilization results in a relatively low biogas production yield. This yield can be significantly increased by co-digesting animal manure with co-substrates such as cheese whey (CW). Therefore, this study applied the Simplex Lattice experimental design to verify the biomethane production through different mixture concentrations of goat manure and cheese whey using bench reactors in batch mode. The volumetric compositions (CW 100 /GM 0 , CW 75 /GM 25 , CW 50 /GM 50 , CW 25 /GM 75 , CW 0 /GM 100 ) were evaluated by adjusting linear and quadratic models. The results presented COD removal efficiencies between 40.07 and 63.73% and total volatile solids removal between 22.87 and 58.99%. According to the statistical analysis of the Simplex Lattice design, co-digestion showed favorability for methane production compared to goat manure alone. Furthermore, the maximum methane production yield (MY COD ) was 319.89 mL-CH 4 /gCOD, with a productivity rate (MYPR) of 3.39 mL-CH 4 /gCOD.d. These maximum values were observed in the CW 75 /GM 25 condition. The quadratic model exhibited the best fit for the design adopted.

Abstract:Substantial amounts of expired dairy products (EDP) are generated due to their high perishability. These wastes are rich in organic matter, and their landfill disposal negatively impacts the environment. An alternative to reducing and recovering this waste would be to use it as a substrate in anaerobic digestion (AD) to produce biogas. This study investigated methane (CH 4 ) production using different concentrations of EDP co-digested with synthetic domestic wastewater (SDW). Five anaerobic batch reactors (1000 mL) were assembled with different concentrations of EDP in SDW (500 mL working volume), namely (1) 0%, (2) 5.0%, (3) 7.5%, (4) 10.0%, and (5) 15.0% (v/v). COD removals were 81%, 84%, 80%, 89%, and 14% for assays 1 to 5, respectively. The cumulative CH 4 productions were (mL/L) 717, 3354, 5327, 6584, and 1156 for assays 1 to 5, respectively. Assay 5 (15% EDP) was inhibited by volatile fatty acid (VFA) accumulation. However, assays 2, 3, and 4 (with 5.0–10.0% EDP) showed high CH 4 yields (mLCH 4 /gVS add ) of 319, 333, and 317, respectively, demonstrating the feasibility of anaerobic co-digestion of EDP with SDW. In assays 3 and 4, a similar archaeal community structure was observed, dominated by the genera Methanosaeta , Methanolinea, Methanoregula , and Methanobacterium . In assay 2, the archaeal community demonstrated lower dominance due to insufficient substrate adaptation. This study confirms the viability of using EDP in AD systems to generate CH 4 , suggesting future sustainable applications for this residue.

Abstract:Biohythane, the promising gaseous biofuel, can be produced by the recirculated two-phase anaerobic digestion (R-TPAD). The effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) as 30, 20 and 10 days on biohythane production via RTPAD (recirculation ratio = 0.4) was investigated with co-digestion of food waste and paper waste. The results showed that HRTs of 30 and 20 days maintained stable performance for R-TPAD but HRT of 10 days led to the final decrease in biogas production. The failure in the end was attributed to the wash-out of microbes. The removal efficiencies for COD and carbohydrates were decreased by short HRTs while for VS it remained relatively stable at about 75.7 +/- 4.0%. All through the operation, acidogenic phase and methanogenic phase were separated stably and butyrate pathway was the dominant pathway for hydrogen fermentation in the first stage. The microbial community in the first stage reached the highest diversity when total HRT was 20 days, where the hydrogen production rate was the highest. The genera Lactobacillus and Caproiciproducens kept dominating the dark fermentation in the acidogenic phase, and Ruminococcus and Methanosarcina were decreasing in the methanogenic phase. The biohythane yields were 411 mL/g-VSfed, 332 mL/g-VSfed and 253 mL/g-VSfed, respectively, where the H2 contents were 18.4%, 14.7% and 8.8%, respectively.
Co-digestion of Manure and Whey for in Situ Biogas Upgrading by the Addition of H2: Process Performance and Microbial Insights

Abstract:In situ biogas upgrading was conducted by introducing H2 directly to the anaerobic reactor. As H2 addition is associated with consumption of the CO2 in the biogas reactor, pH increased to higher than 8.0 when manure alone was used as substrate. By co-digestion of manure with acidic whey, the pH in the anaerobic reactor with the addition of hydrogen could be maintained below 8.0, which did not have inhibition to the anaerobic process. The H2 distribution systems (diffusers with different pore sizes) and liquid mixing intensities were demonstrated to affect the gas-liquid mass transfer of H2 and the biogas composition. The best biogas composition (75:6.6:18.4) was obtained at stirring speed 150 rpm and using ceramic diffuser, while the biogas in the control reactor consisted of CH4 and CO2 at a ratio of 55:45. The consumed hydrogen was almost completely converted to CH4, and there was no significant accumulation of VFA in the effluent. The study showed that addition of hydrogen had positive effect on the methanogenesis, but had no obvious effect on the acetogenesis. Both hydrogenotrophic methanogenic activity and the concentration of coenzyme F420 involved in methanogenesis were increased. The archaeal community was also altered with the addition of hydrogen, and a Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus related band appeared in a denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis gel from the sample of the reactor with hydrogen addition. Though the addition of hydrogen increased the dissolved hydrogen concentration, the degradation of propionate was still thermodynamically feasible at the reactor conditions.
Mitigating short-circuits through synergistic temperature and hydraulic retention time control for enhancing methane yield in continuous stirred-tank reactors

Abstract:Temperature and hydraulic retention time (HRT) control are crucial for mitigating the "short-circuit" issue and enhancing methane production in continuous stirred-tank reactors. This study focuses on the combined effects of temperature and HRT on methanation via operating the reactors at different temperatures (35 °C, 45 °C, and 55 °C) and HRT (30, 25, and 20 d) for 116 days. The results demonstrated that the digester conducted at 45 °C and an HRT of 30 d unexpectedly yielded the maximum average methane production of 296.08 ml/g volatile solids (VS). In contrast, the optimal HRT for the 35 °C and 55 °C digesters were 25 and 30 d, with a methane yield of 241.88 ml/g VS and 240.9 ml/g VS, respectively. High-throughput sequencing shows that Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Themotogae, Chloroflexi, and Acidobacteria dominated 90–98 % of the total bacteria. Temperature exhibited a significant influence on shaping microbial ecosystems, indicating that temperature, rather than HRT, is the primary factor to consider. Additionally, metagenomic analysis reveals that the levels of genes involved in acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogenic pathways were enhanced at 45 °C, probably improving methane yield. These findings provide new insights into "short-circuit" mitigation and strategies to strengthen methane generation from biomass.

Abstract:The effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the performance of hydrogen production from beet sugar wastewater by anaerobic fermentation using mixed microbial communities was investigated in a continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) in this present study. A CSTR was designed and its performance was determined at various HRT. The goal was to find the optimal HRT for hydrogen production, to minimize the size, mass, and volume of a production model. The bioreactor was tested at 8, 6, and 4 h HRTs under the conditions 6000 mg/L of COD and 35°C of experimental temperature. Biogas and hydrogen yield, effluent pH, VLK, OPR, Liquid fermentation products and biomass concentration were monitored to characterize reactor performance. The highest H2 production (16.2 L/d) and the specific hydrogen production rate (0.22 L/gMLVSS·d) was obtained at 24 kg/m3·d of OLR, respectively. A 6 h HRT will be used in future studies to determine the suitability of the CSTR for fermentative hydrogen production.

Abstract:This study investigated the continuous biohydrogen production in an anaerobic inner cycle biohydrogen production (AICHP) reactor fed with synthetic molasses wastewater as the model substrate under mesophilic conditions (37 ± 1 °C). The hydraulic retention times (HRTs) were set as 6.12, 4.90, 4.08, 3.50, and 3.06 h. Both maximum hydrogen production rate (HPR) (8.08 ± 0.48 L/L/d) and maximum granule formation were achieved at the HRT of 3.50 h. Acetic acid and butyric acid were the dominant metabolites in all tested HRTs throughout the experiment. Microbial community analysis showed that shortening the HRT promoted hydrogen production. This was mainly achieved by enhancing the growth of acetogenic bacteria in the AICHP reactor, rather than the growth of hydrogen-producing bacteria.

Abstract:The feasibility of anaerobic digestion of dairy wastewater at 10°C was investigated in a high height : diameter ratio EGSB reactor. Stable performance was observed at an applied organic loading rate (OLR) of 0.5–2 kg COD m −3 d −1 with chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies above 85%. When applied OLR increased to values above 2 kg COD m −3 d −1 , biotreatment efficiency deteriorated, with methanogenesis being the rate-limiting step. The bioreactor recovered quickly (3 days) after reduction of the OLR. qPCR results showed a reduction in the abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogenic Methanomicrobiales and Methanobacteriales throughout the steady state period followed by a sharp increase in their numbers (111-fold) after the load shock. Specific methanogenic activity and maximum substrate utilising rate ( A max ) of the biomass at the end of trial indicated increased activity and preference towards hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis, which correlated well with the increased abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens . Acetoclastic Methanosaeta spp. remained at stable levels throughout the trial. However, increased apparent half-saturation constant ( K m ) at the end of the trial indicated a decrease in the specific substrate affinity for acetate of the sludge, suggesting that Methanosaeta spp., which have high substrate affinity, started to be outcompeted in the reactor.
Anaerobic Treatment of Cassava Stillage for Hydrogen and Methane Production in Continuously Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) under High Organic Loading Rate (OLR)

Abstract:Anaerobic hydrogen and methane production from cassava stillage in continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) were investigated in this study. Results showed that the heatpretreatment of inoculum did not enhance hydrogen yield compared to raw inoculum under mesophilic condition after continuous operation. However, the hydrogen yield increased from about 14 ml H-2/gVS under mesophilic condition to 69.6 ml H-2/gVS under thermophilic condition due to the decrease of propionate concentration and inhibition of homoacetogens. Therefore, temperature was demonstrated to be more important than pretreatment of inoculum to enhance the hydrogen production. Under high organic loading rate (OLR) (>10 gVS/(L.d)), the two-phase thermophilic CSTR for hydrogen and methane production was stable with hydrogen and methane yields of 56.6 mlH(2)/gVS and 249 mlCH(4)/gVS. The one-phase thermophilic CSTR for methane production failed due to the accumulation of both acetate and propionate, leading to the pH lower than 6. Instead of propionate alone, the accumulations of both acetate and propionate were found to be related to the breakdown of methane reactor. (C) 2010 Professor T. Nejat Veziroglu. Efficient methane production from anaerobic co-digestion of poultry litter with wheat straw in sequencing batch reactor: Effects of carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, total solids, and hydraulic retention time

Abstract:This study performed co-digestion of poultry litter (PL) with wheat straw in the daily anaerobic sequencing batch reactor considering operation parameters of carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N, 11.6 to 28.4), total solids (TS, 2.6 to 9.4%), and hydraulic retention time (HRT, 7.6 to 24.4d). The inoculum with a diverse microbial community structure included 2% of methanogens (Methanosaeta) was chosen. Experimental performance by central composite design showed continuous methane production with the highest biogas production rate (BPR) obtained at C/N = 20, TS = 6%, and HRT = 7.6d, being (1.18 ± 0.14 L/LR/d). A significant modified quadratic model (p < 0.0001) for predicting BPR was built (R2 = 0.9724). The operation parameters and process stability both affected the release of nitrogen, phosphorus, and magnesium in the effluent. The results provided new support for the novel reactor operations for efficient bioenergy production from PL and agricultural wastes.
Assessment of Single- vs. Two-Stage Process for the Anaerobic Digestion of Liquid Cow Manure and Cheese Whey

Abstract:The growing interest in processes that involve biomass conversion to renewable energy, such as anaerobic digestion, has stimulated research in this field in order to assess the optimum conditions for biogas production from abundant feedstocks, like agro-industrial wastes. Anaerobic digestion is an attractive process for the decomposition of organic wastes via a complex microbial consortium and subsequent conversion of metabolic intermediates to hydrogen and methane. The present study focused on the exploitation of liquid cow manure (LCM) and cheese whey (CW) as noneasily and easily biodegradable sources, respectively, using continuous stirred-tank reactors for biogas production, and a comparison was presented between single- and two-stage anaerobic digestion systems. No significant differences were found concerning LCM treatment, in a two-stage system compared to a single one, concluding that LCM can be treated by implementing a single-stage process, as a recalcitrant substrate, with the greatest methane production rate of 0.67 L CH4/(LR·d) at an HRT of 16 d. On the other hand, using the easily biodegradable CW as a monosubstrate, the two-stage process was considered a better treatment system compared to a single one. During the single-stage process, operational problems were observed due to the limited buffering capacity of CW. However, the two-stage anaerobic digestion of CW produced a stable methane production rate of 0.68 L CH4/(LR·d) or 13.7 L CH4/Lfeed, while the total COD was removed by 76%.

Abstract:Cheese whey (CW) and dairy manure (DM) are the main residues from the dairy industry, both of which can led to significant negative environment impacts if not properly managed. However, their combined anaerobic digestion represents an opportunity to obtain bioenergy and a stabilised material as a soil improver on the farm. Biochemical potential of methane (BMP) assays were carried out at psychrophilic conditions (20 °C) to analyse the influence on biomethane production of different CW:DM mixtures (% w/w) at different of inoculum-to-substrate ratios (ISR). Based on the BMP results, a life cycle assessment (LCA) of the cheese manufacturing process was carried out considering two scenarios (i) considering the current process, where propane gas and electricity are used for cheese production (ii) the incorporation of the biogas generated in the cheese production process in the company. BMP results showed that the best mixture between CW and DM was 65:35 (weight basis) at an organic load of 0.6 gVS/L (ISR of X). The LCA showed that CW and DM anaerobic digestion allowed to reduce the cheese manufacturing carbon footprint from through the substitution of propane by the biogas produced, changing from 5.5 to 3.1 kg CO<sub>2</sub>-eq/kg cheese produced, which indicates that according to the monthly production (633.6 kg) it would stop emitting about 1519 kg CO<sub>2</sub>-eq, i.e. a saving in terms of emissions of approximately 43,6% of the total currently generated.
