Abstract:The long-standing, irrational development and exploitation of water resources in the Aiding Lake Basin (ALB), coupled with excessive groundwater extraction, have led to the gradual depletion of Aiding Lake, the disappearance of Karez wells, the depletion of spring water, and the deterioration of the ecological environment, all of which are serious threats to the economy and survival and welfare of inhabitants. To address the complexities associated with the staggered distribution of natural rivers and artificial canals within the agricultural irrigated region of the ALB, an inverse computation method to gauge canal water requirements was used in building an intelligent simulation of water diversion and conveyance, incorporating different water use methodologies for complex canal systems within the irrigated region. Additionally, this paper characterizes the interaction between the catchment and conveyance section of the Karez wells and the underground aquifer based on the seasonal river module to simulate the entire flow process of the Karez well system, from water extraction and conveyance to groundwater recharge by infiltration. This study presents a coupled simulation model of seasonal river–lake-groundwater interactions in the ALB, where groundwater is simulated under both steady and unsteady flows. The findings indicate that from 2013 to 2022, the annual average groundwater recharge within the ALB was approximately 1.048 billion m 3 , while the discharge was 1.221 billion m 3 , with an annual average groundwater overexploitation of 173 million m 3 . Furthermore, the long-term overexploitation of groundwater has had a direct impact on the ecological environment, resulting in a survival crisis for natural vegetation except in the upper vegetative zone of Aiding Lake, which has good groundwater recharge conditions.

Abstract:In arid and semi-arid areas, due to drought climate and shortage of water resources, groundwater is crucial for natural ecological protection and economic development. It serves a dual role as a resource function and an ecological function. However, with the continuous improvement of the exploitation and utilization of groundwater by human activities during rapid economic development, the phenomenon of groundwater overexploitation is becoming more and more serious, which has destroyed the natural balance of groundwater recharge and discharge. As a result, natural vegetation has lost the maintenance of the ecological function of groundwater, and a series of ecological and environmental problems have occurred, such as natural vegetation degradation, land desertification, sandstorms, and so on. In recent years, scholars have carried out research on groundwater resource management and optimization of water resource allocation, trying to solve the problem of water balance in arid regions. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding and systematization regarding influencing factors and degeneration mechanisms related to groundwater's ecological function. By summarizing and analyzing the previous research results, this paper summarizes the influencing factors, evaluation methods, existing problems and future directions of groundwater ecological function research in China to provide a reference for rational exploitation and utilization of groundwater and ecological protection. This paper is divided into four main contents. The first part introduces the definition of groundwater ecological function (GEF); the second part summarizes the research status of influencing factors of GEF, including the groundwater table depth, vegetation root system and lithologic structure of vadose zone, etc.; the third part analyzes the evaluation of groundwater ecological function; the fourth part discusses the existing problems in the study of groundwater ecological functions, and based on the above research the evaluation framework of GEF is proposed with the Shiyang River basin as a case study; and finally, it highlights the future research directions about GEF.

Evaluating the Interactions Between Surface Water and Groundwater in the Arid Mid-Eastern Yanqi Basin, Northwestern China

Abstract:The environment of Bosten Lake in the Mid-Eastern Yanqi Basin (MEYB), an arid inland area in northwest China, has deteriorated greatly due to increasing groundwater exploitation and changes in the interactions between groundwater and surface water. This study intended to simulate the spatio-temporal variability of groundwater and surface water across the entire MEYB over the period 2000-2013. The applicable groundwater flow model and mass balance calculation method for river water were constructed to evaluate the change in groundwater recharged by and discharged to different segments of the Kaidu River. Simulation results show that the entire river seepage in the MEYB increased from 1.05 to 6.17 x 10(8) m(3)/year between 2000 and 2013. The increasing river seepage, induced by increasing groundwater exploitation, plays the most important role in the water level decline in the downstream reaches of the Kaidu River and in Bosten Lake. This implies that the current utilization of groundwater resources in the MEYB is unsustainable.

Abstract:Groundwater resources have an important impact on the geo-environment and ecological environment. The exploitation of groundwater resources may induce geo-environmental issues and has a negative impact on the ecological environment. The assessment of groundwater sustainable development can provide reasonable suggestions for the management of groundwater resources in coastal cities. In this study, an assessment method for groundwater sustainable development based on the resource supply function, geo-environment stability function, and ecological environment function was provided. Considering the groundwater quantity and quality; the vulnerability of karst collapse, land subsidence, and seawater intrusion; and the distribution of groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs) and soil erosion, the groundwater in the Pearl River Delta was divided into concentrated groundwater supply area (21.97%) and decentralized groundwater supply area (48.22%), ecological protection area (20.77%), vulnerable geo-environment area (8.94%), and unsuitable to exploit groundwater area (0.10%). ROC curve and single-indicator sensitivity analysis were applied in the assessment of geo-environment vulnerability, and the results showed that the VW-AHP model effectively adjusted the weights of the indicators so that the assessment results were more in line with the actual situation in the Pearl River Delta, and the accuracy of the VW-AHP model was higher than that of the AHP model. This study provides a scientific basis for groundwater management in the Pearl River Delta and an example for the assessment of groundwater sustainable development in coastal cities.

Controlling Factors Identification of Groundwater System Evolution Based on Numerical Simulation in the Typical Arid-Inland Basin

Abstract:Groundwater resource is the basic power for the socio-economic development of arid-inland basins, and is also the major factor affecting the ecological environment of the Huangqihai Lake. As a typical study area of arid-inland basins, with the lowering of groundwater levels in recent years, the total area of the Huangqihai Lake decreases and even faces the risk of drying up. To quantitatively analyze the spatial-temporal evolution of groundwater resources in the Huangqihai Basin and the transformation relationship between lake water and groundwater, a numerical simulation model of groundwater flow in the Huangqihai Basin is established. The model is calibrated and validated by using long-term observation data from 2010 to 2016. The simulation results show that the accumulative deficit of groundwater storage in the Huangqihai Basin is 1.5×108 m3 from 2010 to 2016, and over-exploitation of groundwater is the critical reason for the negative water balance in this area. The Sobol method is used to identify the controlling factors affecting the changes of groundwater resources in this area. The sensitivity of eight main parameters affecting the groundwater system is evaluated by using four objective functions: lake stage, lake leakage, groundwater storage and groundwater discharge to lake. There are significant differences in sensitivity analysis results of model parameters under different objective functions. The first two functions are significantly affected by the horizontal permeability and lake leakage rate, while the last two are mainly affected by exploitation and recharge from precipitation and irrigation. It is proved that the influence of over-exploitation of groundwater is the main controlling factor of the depletion of water resources and shrinking of lake area in the Huangqihai Basin. The results of this study can provide technical support and scientific decision making for the sustainable utilization of groundwater resources and the protection of surrounding ecological environment in the Huangqihai Basin.

Abstract:The sustainable development of groundwater resources in arid and semi-arid regions is a challenging task hindered by climate change and human activities. The rational utilization and management of groundwater resources is, therefore, dependent on an understanding of the influences of human and climatic factors on the spatial distribution of groundwater resources and their change over time. The thick Quaternary aquifers in the Yinchuan Basin, China were used herein as an example of how to quantitatively assess spatial and temporal trends in groundwater resources in response to human activities and climate change. A 3D transient groundwater flow model was constructed and used to simulate the evolution and spatial variability of hydrogeological processes from 1990 to 2020. By subsequently applying regime shift detection and correlation analysis to the simulation results, we found that: 1) groundwater storage was continuously depleted over the 30-year period, reaching a cumulative depletion of 1.89×10 9 m 3 ; 2) Human activities were mainly responsible for variations in regional hydrogeological processes for a period of up to 30 years. Climate only affected short-term interannual fluctuations in groundwater storage; 3) Human activities (e.g., river water diversion and groundwater abstractions) were the decisive factors causing a continuous reduction of groundwater resources. A policy-driven reduction in water diversion from the Yellow River directly led to a significant drop in groundwater storage, which had a consequent effect on surface water and groundwater interactions and altered agricultural irrigation patterns (crop patterns and irrigation methods); 4) The amount of groundwater recharge from the Yellow River and local lakes increased from 1990 to 2020, whereas the discharge of groundwater to the Yellow River and lakes decreased.

Abstract:Groundwater is an immensely important and dependable source of water in arid regions including both urban and rural areas of developed and developing countries. The ecological environment in arid regions is extremely fragile and excessive development of groundwater resources may cause lots of ecological problems, and even ecological crisis in some areas. Maintaining sustainable development of socio-economy under the conditions of protecting and rehabilitating the ecological environment pose a great challenge for groundwater research in the arid regions. The paper summarizes key points mostly studied by international researchers, then gives a brief introduction to groundwater researches in arid regions of northwestern China, and introduced several key research aspects with emphasis on conjunctive surface water-groundwater use and management, social ecology and groundwater, groundwater salinity, variability of aquifer parameters, groundwater management, monitoring techniques, groundwater system under the impact of climate change. Key issues are put forward to improve the eco-environmental problems in arid regions of China including the relationship between groundwater and groundwater dependent ecosystems, developing the integrated Oasis-hydrosphere-economy models, strengthening the National Groundwater Monitoring Network, using the new techniques such as environmental isotope, remote sensing and groundwater geophysics. The final solutions of water-related problems in northwestern China will be from many engineering and non-engineering projects, such as shifting steadfastly the inappropriate pattern of economic growth, carrying out energetically restructuring of industry ingand building high-efficiency, water-conservation and pollution-control economy and society.
Management of sustainable ecological water levels of endorheic salt lakes in the Inner Mongolian Plateau of China based on eco‐hydrological processes

Abstract:Hydrologic regime plays an important role in maintaining aquatic ecosystem structures and biogeochemical processes of endorheic salt lakes. Due to joint influences of regional climate change, runoff regulation and water withdrawal, ecological water deficiency has been increasingly prominent in endorheic salt lakes in Northwest China, especially in the Inner Mongolian Plateau. Previous studies mainly focused on establishing and applying methods to determine ecological water levels of lakes, while much less attention was paid to a more important problem – how such water levels could be reached under changed watershed hydrological processes. Solutions of this gap were explored in this study using the Dalinuoer Lake as an example. This lake is a typical endorheic salt lake located in the Inner Mongolian Plateau. It is a critical source to provide important ecological services and economic values for locals. Its ecological water level to maintain the optimum salinity threshold was first calculated by applying a statistical analysis of relationships between the phytoplankton biomass, salinity and water level of the lake. Potential measures to preserve the ecological water level of the lake were subsequently evaluated based on a hydrological process analysis of the watershed. The results indicated that the optimum salinity threshold was 5.7 g/L. This value should be also valid for other endorheic salt lakes in this region. According to a function between the water storage and the mean water depth of this lake, the ecological water level was determined to be 10.28 m with an ecological water deficit of 2.5 × 108 m3. A basin water balance analysis using the results proposed measures to maintain a sustainable ecological water level, including controlling local water consumption and infusing ecological water. The results of this study could be extrapolated to other similar conditions to provide guidance for policy‐makers, so that better decisions could be hopefully forged to protect eco‐hydrological processes of endorheic salt lakes in the Mongolian Plateau, as well as other comparable scenarios.This article is protected by copyright. Examining the change in groundwater flow patterns: A case study from the plain area of the Baiyangdian Lake Watershed, North China

Abstract:Examining the evolution of groundwater flow patterns is critical to understanding the hydrological cycle and plays an important role in the sustainable management of water resources and ecosystems. In this study, the plain area of the Baiyangdian Lake Watershed (PBW) was chosen as a typical area for severe water scarcity and ecological crisis in the North China Plain. We investigated the temporal and spatial variability in groundwater flow patterns from a holistic view of the water cycle in the PBW and explored more sustainable water resources management using multiple methods, including field surveys, historical data review, statistical analysis, and numerical groundwater modelling. The results show that the groundwater storage decreased by 494 × 10 8 m 3 across the PBW from 1965 to 2019, while the groundwater level presented a decreasing trend for most of the period, which resulted in changes of Baiyangdian Lake and groundwater interactions. Human factors, such as groundwater extraction and water transfer projects, significantly influenced the evolution of groundwater flow patterns by generating a greater contribution of human factors to groundwater balance (54.23%) than that of climate change (45.77%). The hydrodynamic simulations imply that the interaction between groundwater and Baiyangdian Lake was dominated by groundwater recharging the river under natural conditions, and the influence depth of the interaction zone was within about 80 m underground; however, under anthropogenic disturbance, their interaction was altered to the lake recharging groundwater, with a maximum influence depth up to 135 m. Furthermore, considering the systematicity and zoning of the water cycle, we proposed a combination of different strategies, including restricted groundwater exploitation, increased water diversion and water use efficiency, and managed aquifer recharge, which could restore groundwater levels and groundwater storage over a 20-year period to realize sustainable groundwater development. This study highlights the spatiotemporal groundwater flow patterns in a changing environment and the associated hydrogeological processes and provides insights towards the development of more effective water management strategies.

Abstract:This article analyzes part of a ground water flow system in the North China Plain (NCP) subject to severe overexploitation and rapid depletion. A transient ground water flow model was constructed and calibrated to quantify the changes in the flow system since the predevelopment 1950s. The flow model was then used in conjunction with an optimization code to determine optimal pumping schemes that improve ground water management practices. Finally, two management scenarios, namely, urbanization and the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, were evaluated for their potential impacts on the ground water resources in the study area. Although this study focuses on the NCP, it illustrates a general modeling framework for analyzing the sustainability, or the lack thereof, of ground water flow systems driven by similar hydrogeologic and economic conditions. The numerical simulation is capable of quantifying the various components of the overall flow budget and evaluating the impacts of different management scenarios. The optimization modeling allows the determination of the maximum "sustainable pumping" that satisfies a series of prescribed constraints. It can also be used to minimize the economic costs associated with ground water development and management. Furthermore, since the NCP is one of the most water scarce and economically active regions in the world, the conclusions and insights from this study are of general interest and international significance.
Spatial and Temporal Evolution Characteristics and Sustainability Analysis of Groundwater in a Typical Inland River Oasis Irrigation Area

Abstract:Abstract The large amount of agricultural land development in the irrigation area of the lower Amudarya has led to a greater amount of water resources being introduced into the irrigation area. The high groundwater level in the irrigation area and the unreasonable management of water resources have led to the deterioration of the regional ecological environment. In the context of global climate change, we used a variety of trend analysis methods and correlation analysis methods and found that human activities are the main factors affecting regional annual groundwater level changes and annual groundwater level fluctuations, accounting for 67.6% and 78.9%, respectively. These factors have led to a high temporal and spatial heterogeneity of the regional groundwater from 1990 to 2020: the multiyear rate of change at various points in the region ranges from -0.054 m/a to 0.098 m/a, and the groundwater level in the entire area is rising at a rate of 0.015 m/a. Under the scenario of increasing groundwater level volatility, the continuously rising water level requires us to consider whether this state will cause harm to the future area, so we used the capillary method to define the regional ecological water level as 1.78-2.78 m. When exploring its relationship with regional groundwater, it was found that starting in March, 72.2% of the regional groundwater level exceeded the ecological water level by an average of 0.38 m, and by July, 83.5% of the region exceeded the ecological water level by an average of 0.98 m; furthermore, the highest point was only 0.5 m from the ground. Under the future changing trend of regional groundwater in the future, such results will cause a further deterioration of regional ecology, and sustainable groundwater exploitation methods with the goal of maintaining the ecological water level should urgently be proposed.
Reservoir-Induced Hydrological Alterations Using Ecologically Related Hydrologic Metrics: Case Study in the Beijiang River, China

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities have a tremendous impact on water ecosystems worldwide, especially in China. To quantitatively evaluate the hydrological alteration connected with aquatic lives and river ecological risks, we took the Beijiang River located in South China as the case study and used ecosurplus (defined as ecological carrying capacity exceeding ecological consumption)/ecodeficit (defined as ecological consumption exceeding carrying capacity) and Indicators of Hydrological Alterations to evaluate hydrological changes. The Ecologically Relevant Hydrologic Indicators were employed to select the key indices of Indicators of Hydrological Alterations, and the eco-environmental water demand calculation provide an effective way for the reservoir operation. Results showed that: (1) High flows contributed more to the ecodeficit, while low flows contributed more to the ecosurplus; (2) the ecodeficit in some parts of the river basin might exceed the ecosurplus after reservoir construction, especially along the main stream; and (3) the determination of eco-environmental water demand is a feasible way for improving the environment by controlling reservoirs. The current study can help guide the optimization of hydrological operation in the basin toward making the ecosystem healthier and has potential to further provide a reference for other basins in terms of hydrological alterations driven by anthropogenic activities.

Towards sustainable groundwater development with effective measures under future climate change in Beijing Plain, China

Abstract:To cope with the groundwater depletion problem and achieve sustainable groundwater development, groundwater conservation measures and managed aquifer recharge (MAR) have been implemented worldwide. However, knowledge gaps exit how does the aquifer system respond to these interventions differently and if these interventions are adequate to lead to long-term sustainable groundwater development under future climate change. In Beijing Plain, two measures have been implemented: reduction of groundwater abstraction by substituting groundwater abstraction with transferred surface water and implementation of managed aquifer recharge (MAR) in two major rivers. This study aims to assess how do the shallow and deep aquifers respond to these measures and if these measures can lead to long-term sustainable groundwater development in Beijing Plain under future climate change. A 3-D transient groundwater flow model was calibrated and used to simulate groundwater level and budget changes from 2021 to 2050. The monthly groundwater recharge was estimated using the projected monthly precipitation from three downscaled regional climate models under two scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). The results show that declines in groundwater head and storage can be reversed with the combined two measures, thereby contributing to achieve sustainable groundwater development. The reduction of abstractions is a deciding measure to reverse the trend of groundwater depletion, especially in the deep confined aquifers, while large scale MAR schemes can restore the cones of depressions in shallow aquifers and maintain the groundwater abstraction. Climate variation has large impacts on groundwater resources, especially, consecutive dry years can cause rapid groundwater storage depletion. The projected monthly precipitation from 2021 to 2050 is not significantly different from the past. Therefore, the projected future precipitation has minor impacts on groundwater resources in the next 30 years. The findings from the study will support the Beijing municipality to maintain the tight control on groundwater abstraction and to implement large-scale MAR schemes in two rivers. This successful example will encourage managers of other heavily exploited aquifers to take similar measures to achieve sustainable groundwater development.

Abstract:In arid regions, stream‐flow regulation impacts the hydrological processes and riparian ecosystems in both direct and indirect ways. Thus, understanding the degree of eco‐hydrological effects over different spatiotemporal scales is critical for effective stream‐flow regulation. This study investigates the multiple hydro‐ecological effects caused by a mandatory implementation of stream‐flow regulation in a typical endorheic river basin, the Heihe River Basin (HRB), in Northwest China. The changes in the stream‐flow regime, spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation and groundwater flow system were quantified using stream‐flow data, leaf area index products of 1 km resolution and a 3D numerical groundwater flow model. The results show that the stream leakage to groundwater is strongly correlated with the disturbance by stream‐flow regulation, moderately with the evaporation and inflow to terminal lake, but only weakly with the total vegetation state and cropland change. Even though the average groundwater level for the entire lower HRB has an upward trend in response to increasing stream flow, it has no significant correlation with flow regulation. The groundwater system acts as a “temporary bank” to buffer the regulated stream flow for the entire lower HRB. The spatiotemporal patterns of the leaf area index distribution point to the stream‐flow regulation as triggers for the increase in cropland and vegetation patches in the flat terrain along the river branches. This case study in the lower HRB has provided valuable database and insights for environmental flow management of other arid watersheds.
Ecological Risk Assessment and Management of Floods and Droughts in the Li River Basin

Abstract:Regional ecological risk assessment is the foundation of ecological risk management. The ecological risk assessment of river basins should consider the integrity and relative independence of the geographical unit. Based on historical literatures, natural geographic data, and socio-economic data, this study chooses droughts and floods that are the major natural disasters intheLi River Basin as risk sources, and 161 sub-basins as assessment units. According to the relative risk assessment model, comprehensive ecological risks in this river basin are evaluated based on risk source, vulnerability, and ability to resist risk. Results show a large spatial variation of the ecological risk intheLi River Basin. Lingui County, north of Linchuan County, and Xin’an County are the high-risk regions with weak infrastructures, unstable landscapes, and vulnerable ecology, accounting for 2.3% of the total area of the basin. Risks are relatively low in the Mao’er Mountain and the Haiyang MountainNature Reserves due to weak anthropogenic activities, well preserved vegetation, and stable landscapes, the areas of the reserves account for about 59.0% of the total basin area. Benefited from the improved infrastructure,GuilinCity in the midstream has a low risk as well. However, non-negligible potential risks exist in Yangshuo County in the downstream of the Li River, which belongs to the mid-risk region.Based on the risk assessment, measures to prevent ecological risk have been proposed. For the high-risk regions, attention should be paid to the protection of the vegetation. With the help of remote sensing, the monitoring and management of the environment can reduce the frequency of the risk. On the other hand, hydrological model can simulate the spatial and temporal distribution of the water, valid adjustment measures should be adopted to reduce the damage of drought and flood disaster. For the regions suffering from higher frequency disasters, ecological migration should be considered. For the regions of mid-risk in LingchuanCounty and Xin’anCounty, unreasonable farming mustbe forbidden, which breaks the stability of landscape. The industrial structure in the regions should be adjusted to decrease their dependence on water. Most of the relative-low-risk regions belong to Karst landform, where there is difficulty in the modulation of water, attention should be paid to protection of the environment to reduce the damage of the risk. The low-risk regions are located inGuilinCity where there are consummate infrastructures, and in the Mao’er Mountain and Haiyang Mountain Reserveswhere the landscapes are stable. To maintain the management of the Reserves, preventing the interference from tourism seems to be an effective way. This study aims at improving our understanding of the ecological risk management intheLi River Basin.

Abstract:Groundwater is a main water resource for most of the cities in North China. By virtue of the self-regulation potential of shallow aquifers, the yearly or long-term asymmetric water recharges, if properly operated, can be converted into valuable water resources to increase the water supply for corresponding cities, especially in arid periods. This is of great practical importance for cities in North China, where the annual Precipitation differs greatly from year to year and mainly centralizes in summer To quantitatively estimate the self-regulation potential of such shallow aquifers, a representative case study was carried out in a small aquifer (about 400 km) in Beijing. A two-dimensional (2D) finite element flow model coupled with a Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to estimate the evolution of the flow system according to climate variability and to assess the reaction of the aquifer system under different scenarios of groundwater development. The results indicate that the aquifer has a potential to supply sustainably almost double of the current abstraction (about 0.3 Mm(3)/d) in drought periods. When the water demand decreases in abundant precipitation years, the water table can recover rapidly after stopping the emergency wells, which are for overexploitation in drought years.
Role of Groundwater in the Dryland Ecohydrological System: A Case Study of the Heihe River Basin

Abstract:Groundwater sustains food production and ecosystem health in drylands. Groundwater influences the interlinked hydrological processes and ecological state; however, the function of groundwater in the ecohydrological system is yet to be quantified clearly. In this study, we assess the role of groundwater in the ecohydrological system of the Heihe River Basin, using a regional-scale integrated model with multiple independent databases. Our results show that first, in over 40% of mid-lower plain, the groundwater table is less than 10m deep, and both recharge and evaporation of groundwater dominate seasonal water budget variations; recharge is more affected by land use than groundwater evaporation, and it has a higher variability ranging over 2 orders of magnitude within vegetated land use type. Second, mountain block recharge maintains the piedmont groundwater; the upper mountainous partition between baseflow and mountain block recharge impacts the evaporation and two-way exchange between groundwater and stream/lake in the downstream alluvial plain. Third, the groundwater system stores over 50% of streamflow in the dry season and about 10% in the wet season along leakage segments; groundwater dominates the streams by contributing about 40% of streamflow in the dry season along the seepage segments of the middle alluvial plain. Fourth, shallow groundwater sustains a vibrant ecosystem directly by providing a stable source of water for vegetation and indirectly by buffering lateral groundwater flow. Our study not only bridges the quantification gap for regional studies of drylands but also provides suggestions on water management and future water sustainability and food security.
Groundwater Vulnerability in a Megacity Under Climate and Economic Changes: A Coupled Sociohydrological Analysis

Abstract:Groundwater depletion has become increasingly challenging, and many cities worldwide have adopted drastic policies to relieve water stress due to socioeconomic growth. Located on the declining aquifer of the North China Plain, Beijing, for example, has developed plans to limit the size of the city's population. However, the effect of population displacement under uncertain macroeconomic and climate change remains ambiguous. We adopt a sociohydrological model, with explicit consideration of the dynamics of human‐water interactions, to explore the groundwater vulnerability of Beijing. We investigate how human response might shape the development trajectories of the groundwater‐population‐economy system under different macroscale economic and climate scenarios. Furthermore, we use a machine learning algorithm to identify the decisive factors to be considered for reducing groundwater vulnerability. Our results show that while rapid external economic development or larger annual average precipitation would enable recovery of the groundwater table in the short term, they may slacken human water shortage awareness and result in more acute groundwater depletion in the long run. Strengthening policymaker perceptions of groundwater depletion would prompt timely response policies for controlling population size. Improving the quantity and quality of labor force input to economic development would avoid downturns in the economy due to labor shortages. The outcomes of this study suggest that these strategies would effectively reduce groundwater vulnerability in the long run without causing severe socioeconomic recession. These findings highlight the importance of endogenizing human behavioral dynamics in sustainable urban water management.

Abstract:The arid inland regions around the world are suffering from extreme water shortages and ecological crises due to the impacts of climate change and enhanced human activities. This study used multiple methods including trend and abrupt analysis, correlation analysis, water-balance analysis, and hydrochemical analysis to evaluate the hydrogeological processes and hydrochemical effects in 5 periods in the Manas River catchment, a typical arid inland catchment in China. The results show that groundwater storage in the catchment decreased by 5.45 × 108 m3 over the past 60 years, while glacial melt, snowmelt, and precipitation showed an increasing trend since the 1980 s. A drop in the groundwater level in the alluvial fan and a 28 % reduction in spring discharge in the lower alluvial fan since 1959 were caused by reduced river infiltration owing to the water diversion projects. Meanwhile, the concentrations of SO42- and Cl- in the alluvial fan groundwater have more than doubled over the period 1957–2018 as a result of the decrease of both groundwater level and flow rate. Long-term over-exploitation of groundwater associated with irrigation after 1978 strongly depleted the groundwater storage and altered the flow path of groundwater in the oasis zone. In addition, the expansion of arable land and increased temperatures enhanced evapotranspiration and salinization of shallow groundwater in the oasis and desert zones. Based on the results, we propose making full use of natural underground reservoirs to increase infiltration of river water and flood water in the alluvial fan zone, and reducing the arable land area to ensure the sustainability of water resources and ecology in the middle and lower reaches of the catchment. The results will provide reference for the sustainable development of water resources and environmental protection in arid inland regions and similar catchments worldwide.

Abstract:In the arid inland basins of China, the long-term unregulated agricultural irrigation from surface water diversion and groundwater abstraction has caused the unsustainability of water resources and the degradation of ecosystems. This requires the integrated management of surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) at basin scale to achieve scientific decisions which support sustainable water resource allocation in China. This study developed a novel multi-objective simulation-optimization (S-O) modeling framework. The optimization framework integrated a new epsilon multi-objective memetic algorithm (ε-MOMA) with a MODFLOW-NWT model to implement real-world decision-making for water resource management while pondering the complicated groundwater–lake–river interaction in an arid inland basin. Then the optimization technique was validated through the SW–GW management in Yanqi Basin (YB), a typical arid region with intensive agricultural irrigation in northwest China. The management model, involving the maximization of total water supply rate, groundwater storage, surface runoff inflow to the terminal lake, and the minimization of water delivery cost, was proposed to explore the trade-offs between socioeconomic and environmental factors. It is shown that the trade-off surface can be achieved in the four-dimensional objective space by optimizing spatial groundwater abstraction in the irrigation districts and surface water diversion in the river. The Pareto-optimal solutions avoid the prevalence of decision bias caused by the low-dimensional optimization formulation. Decision-makers are then able to identify their desired water management schemes with preferred objectives and achieve maximal socioeconomic and ecological benefits simultaneously. Moreover, three representative runoff scenarios in relation to climate change were specified to quantify the effect of decreasing river runoff on the water management in YB. Results show that runoff depletion would have a great negative impact on the management objectives. Therefore, the integrated SW and GW management is of critical importance for the fragile ecosystem in YB under changing climatic conditions.
