Abstract:Poly-synchronous techniques were performed to investigate the inactivation and degradation mechanisms of Microcystic aeruginosa under UV-C irradiation and chlorination. Extracellular dissolved organic matter (EDOM) and intracellular dissolved organic matter (IDOM) properties were analyzed using excitation emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy, while the concentration of biochemical parameters including protein, phycocyanin, chlorophyll-a, and microcystin-LR was determined. Transmission electron microscopy was also used to obtained ultrastructural images. EEM analysis revealed that protein-like matters were the major EDOM fluorescence component, while amino acid-like and protein-like matters constituted IDOM with little amount of humic-like substances. In addition, the monitor of biochemical parameters showed that they had different susceptibility under the inactivation reactions. Poly-synchronous techniques confirmed that UV-C irradiation was more appropriate than chlorination for M. aeruginosa inactivation and degradation. The primary mechanism of UV-C irradiation was direct photo-degradation and indirect oxidation by reactive oxygen species, which effectively degraded the fluorescence EDOM and IDOM and caused decomposition of cytoplasmic inclusions and intracellular bioorganic substances. Different from UV-C, the inactivation during chlorination was due to the formation of HOCl, which permeated into the cyanobacteria cells and caused intracellular damage, accompanied with incomplete degradation of IDOM and harmful MC-LR.

Abstract:Nanoscale α-MnO2 with different morphologies (nanoparticles, nanoflowers and nanorods) were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method and tested in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. The catalytic activity of α-MnO2 mainly relied on the specific surface area and crystallinity, and followed the order of α-MnO2 nanoflowers>α-MnO2 nanorods>α-MnO2 nanoparticles>commercial MnO2. Acidic condition was more beneficial to CIP removal than neutral condition, and the degradation would be greatly accelerated in alkaline circumstance. The introduction of chloride and bicarbonate displayed concentration-dependent dual effect. The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) exerted the detrimental effect on CIP degradation. Eleven oxidation products were identified by UPLC–MS/MS and the changes of their concentrations were monitored, five products showed monotonous uptrend while four intermediates present monotonous downtrend once they were generated. Piperazine ring cleavage, hydroxylation and F/OH substitution were found to be the important oxidation pathways. The acute toxicity of resulted solution gradually decreased with the lapse of time, and higher PMS concentration favored the detoxification. The CIP removal in α-MnO2/PMS process was also efficient under the actual water background, which was testified by the results of fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM).

Abstract:This study investigated degradation behaviors of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug Nabumetone (NMT) and its major metabolite 6-methoxy-2-naphthylacetic acid (MNA) in the coupling process of ultraviolet and monochloramine (UV/NH2Cl). The second-order rate constants of the contaminants reacting with reactive radicals (HO•, Cl•, Cl2•⁻, and CO3•⁻) were determined by laser flash photolysis experiments. HO• and Cl• contributed predominantly with 52.3% and 21.7% for NMT degradation and 60.8% and 22.3% for MNA degradation. The presence of chlorides retarded the degradation of NMT, while promoted the destruction of MNA, which was ascribed to the photosensitization effects of MNA under UV irradiation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that radical adduct formation (RAF) was dominant pathway for both HO• and Cl• reacting with the contaminants, and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) preferred to occur on side chains of NMT and MNA. NMT reacted with NO2• through single electron transfer (SET) with the second-order rate constant calculated to be 5.35 × 107 (mol/L)−1 sec−1, and the contribution of NO2• was predicted to be 13.0% of the total rate constant of NMT in pure water, which indicated that NO2• played a non-negligible role in the degradation of NMT. The acute toxicity and developmental toxicity of NMT were enhanced after UV/NH2Cl treatment, while those of MNA were alleviated. The transformation products of both NMT and MNA exhibited higher mutagenicity than their parent compounds. This study provides a deep understanding of the mechanism of radical degradation of NMT and MNA in the treatment of UV/NH2Cl.

Abstract:Chlorine-incorporating ultraviolet (UV) provides a multiple barrier for drinking water disinfection. Meanwhile, post-UV employment can promote the degradation of micropollutants by radical production from chlorine residual photolysis. This work studied the degradation of one such chemical, tonalide (AHTN), by low-pressure UV-activated free chlorine (FC) under typical UV disinfection dosage of < 200 mJ.cm(-2) and water matrix of filtered tank effluent. AHTN was rapidly degraded by UV/FC in accordance with pseudo-first-order kinetics. The reaction rate constants of AHTN with reactive chlorine species and hydroxyl radical (HO center dot) were estimated. Mechanistic exploration evidenced that under UV/FC, AHTN degradation was attributable to direct photolysis, ClO center dot, and HO center dot. The carbonyl side chain of AHTN served as an important attack site for radicals. Water matrices, such as natural organic matter (NOM), HCO3-, Cu2+, PO43-, and Fe2+, showed noticeable influence on the UV/FC process with an order of NOM > HCO3- > Cu2+ > PO43- > Fe2+. Reaction product analysis showed ignorable formation of chlorinated intermediates and disinfection byproducts.
Formation of nitro(so) and chlorinated products and toxicity alteration during the UV/monochloramine treatment of phenol

Abstract:The UV/monochloramine (UV/NH 2 Cl) process is an emerging advanced oxidation process (AOP) to remove organic contaminants in water treatment with radicals including hydroxyl radicals (HO similar to), reactive chlorine species (RCS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). This study investigated the formation of nitro(so) and chlorinated products and toxicity alteration during the UV/NH 2 Cl treatment of phenol. RNS and/or RCS induced the formation of nitro(so), chlorinated and polymeric compounds during phenol transformation by UV/NH 2 Cl. These compounds dramatically increased the cytotoxicity to Chinese hamster ovary cells after 20 min UV/NH 2 Cl treatment, which was 10 times higher than that after 24 h chloramination. The increase of cytotoxicity in UV/NH 2Cl was primarily attributable to 4-nitrosophenol, and the cytotoxicity followed the order of 4-nitrosophenol >> 4-nitrophenol > 2,4,6-trichlorophenol > 2,4-dichlorophenol > phenol. 4-Nitrosophenol was significantly generated by the combination of similar to NO and phenoxy radical, where the maximum conversion rates of phenol to 4-nitrosophenol increased from 4.9% to 62.4% when pH increased from 5 to 10. The highest conversion rate was at pH 10 because the similar to NO concentration increased with increasing pH from 5 to 10 in UV/NH 2Cl, as verified by the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. Nitrophenols were also detected at much lower concentrations than 4-nitrosophenol, which were mainly formed by the oxidation of 4-nitrosophenol and the combination of similar to NO 2 with phenoxy radicals. RCS was responsible for the formation of chlorinated products mainly through Cl similar to addition and the reactions of Cl similar to /Cl 2 similar to- with phenoxy radicals. Also, RCS and RNS significantly enhanced the formation of carbonaceous (i.e., chloroform and chloral hydrate) and nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (i.e., chloropicrin and dichloroacetonitrile) in UV/NH 2 Cl. This study indicates that the UV/NH 2Cl treatment significantly increased toxicity and validates the roles of RNS and RCS in producing toxic nitro(so) and chlorinated products.

Abstract:Ametryn (AMT), one of the most widely used herbicides in agriculture, has been frequently detected as a micropollutant in many aquatic environments. AMT residue not only pollutes water but also acts as a precursor for the production of disinfection by-products (DBPs). This study systematically investigated the fate of AMT during the UV/chlorine process. It was observed that the combination of UV irradiation and chlorination degraded AMT synergistically. The results of the radical quenching experiments suggested that AMT degradation by the UV/chlorine process involved the participation of UV photolysis, hydroxyl radical (OH) reactions, and reactive chlorine species (RCS) reactions, which accounted for 45.4%, 36.4%, and 14.5% of the degradation, respectively. Moreover, we found that Cl- 2 was an important reactive radical for AMT degradation. The chlorine dose, pH, coexisting anions (Cl- and HCO3-), and natural organic matter (NOM) were found to affect AMT degradation during the UV/chlorine process. Nineteen predominant intermediates/products of AMT degradation during UV/chlorine process were identified, including atrazine. Moreover, the corresponding transformation pathways were proposed, including electron transfer, bond cleavage (C-S, C-N), radical (OH, Cl and Cl- 2) reactions, and subsequent hydroxylation. The toxicity tests with Vibrio fischeri on AMT degradation suggested that more DBPs were generated by UV/chlorine-treated AMT, which possessed higher acute toxicity than AMT did. Although the UV/chlorine process evidently promoted the AMT degradation, optimization of process parameters may reduce the DBP production and merits further investigation.
Formation and control of organic chloramines and disinfection by-products during the degradation of pyrimidines and purines by UV/chlorine process in water

Abstract:Pyrimidine and purine bases (adenine, cytosine, guanine and thymine) are important precursors of organic chloramines (OC) and disinfection by-products (DBPs) during chlor(am)ination. In this study, OC and DBP formation derived from pyrimidine and purine bases during chlor(am)ination, post-chlor(am)ination after pretreated by UV alone and UV/chlorination were systematically investigated with ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs, 265 and 275 nm) and low pressure mercury lamp (LPUV, 254 nm). The results revealed that higher OC formation was observed during chlorination than that during chloramination of pyrimidine and purine bases. The degradation of pyrimidine and purine bases followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics. Both solution pH and UV wavelength played vital influence on the degradation of pyrimidine and purine bases. In terms of fluence-based rate constants (kobs), the degradation rates of pyrimidine and purine bases decreased in the order of 275 nm > 265 nm > 254 nm in alkaline conditions. The synergistic effects of kobs, chlorine, kobs, •OH and kobs, RCS contributed to the differences of pyrimidine and purine bases degradation at different pH values and UV wavelengths. A vital suppression of OC formation was observed during post-chlorination after pretreated by 275 nm UV-LED/chlorination. In addition, compared with LPUV (254 nm), less DBP formation was observed at UV-LED (275 nm), especially during the UV/chlorine process. The phenomena obtained in this study indicated that 275 nm UV-LED combined with chlorine could be a preferred method to promote pyrimidine and purine bases degradation and control OC and DBP formation in practical water treatment.

Abstract:The degradation efficiency and mechanisms of ciprofloxacin (CIP), a typical antibiotic, by a medium-pressure ultraviolet/chloramine (MPUV/NH2Cl) treatment were investigated. The results showed that CIP degradation by MPUV/NH2Cl was significantly higher than that by NH2Cl oxidation and MPUV photolysis, and that this degradation processes were consistent with pseudo-first-order kinetics. The initial CIP concentration (7.5-30.2 μM) and the presence of HCO3- (0.5-10 mM) significantly inhibited CIP degradation with kobs,CIP 0.0090-0.0069 and 0.0078-0.0048 cm2/mJ. In contrast, NO3- (50-500 μM) and Br- (0.5-10 mM) significantly promoted the degradation with kobs,CIP 0.0078-0.0102 and 0.0078-0.0124 cm2/mJ. The effect of Cl- (0.5-10 mM) and natural organic matter (1-5 mg/L) were negligible. The NH2Cl dosage (30-60 μM) presented a dual effect, in which its increase within the optimal concentration range (30-40 μM) accelerated CIP degradation due to the formation of reactive radicals, whereas an excessive increase (40-60 μM) quenched the free radicals, ultimately quenching the free radicals and inhibiting the degradation. The optimum pH for CIP degradation under MPUV/NH2Cl treatment was 7.0. The contribution of reactive halogen species (i.e., reactive chlorine species and reactive nitrogen species) to CIP degradation was substantially greater than that of hydroxyl radicals under acidic or neutral conditions. We identified the degradation products of CIP and proposed degradation pathways, which included defluorination and cracking of the piperazine ring, with the latter being dominant. Compared to haloacetic acid (HAA) and nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs), MPUV/NH2Cl significantly reduced trihalomethane (THM) production and theoretical cytotoxicity by 80.1% and 78.4% respectively, compared to the background experiment in natural water at a UV dose of 300 mJ/cm2.
[Multiple intracerebral enhanced lesions strongly suspected to be microsporidiosis. A case report].

Abstract:This case of microsporidiosis manifested as mutiple intracranial lesions separated in space and time, and neurological and radiological findings were improved with albendazole administration. A 33-year-old man presented with headache, fever, and dysphasia. His consciousness was clear. Neurological examination revealed acalculia, agraphia, and homonymous hemianopsia. He had a past history of febrile convulsive seizures of unknown cause until 14-years-old, but no history of immunodeficiency. T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed a hypointense lesion with a hyperintense part, and ring-like enhancement with gadolinium-diethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid (Gd-DTPA), in the left temporal lobe. T2-weighted and diffusion-weighted MR imaging showed the lesion surrounded by moderate hyperintense areas. He underwent gross total resection of the lesion. Histological examination demonstrated intracellular clusters of small basophilic spore-like bodies in the astrocytes, suggestive of microsporidia-infected astrocytes. However, immunohistochemical, polymerase chain reaction, and serological analyses failed to confirm the definitive diagnosis of microsporidiosis, so that he received no further treatment. Three years later, he presented with sensory disturbance in the left side of his face and left cerebellar ataxia, followed by fever, abnormal sensation in the left side of his face, and aggravated ataxia of the left upper and lower extremities on day 10 after admission. T1-weighted MR imaging with Gd-DTPA showed an enhanced lesion with irregular margin in the left cerebellar peduncle. T2-weighted MR imaging showed a diffuse hyperintense region around the lesion. Cerebrospinal fluid culture, serological analysis for autoimmune disease, and thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic computed tomography and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography detected no abnormalities such as cancers or other lesions in the extracranial organs. No definitive diagnosis was obtained, but recurrence of microsporidiosis was the most probable cause. Administration of albendazole (600 mg/day) was started on day 15, because of rapid neurological and radiological deterioration. This treatment resulted in clinical improvement and disappearance of the lesion on MR imaging after daily administration for 4 weeks. He was discharged on foot with moderate sensory disturbance in the left side of the face and ataxia. Based on the clinical course and negative findings, the final diagnosis was microsporidiosis. This case suggests that microsporidiosis in the central nervous system can persist even in immunocompetent patients without involvement of any other organs, and that albendazole administration is likely to be effective.
Degradation of Chloramphenicol by UV/chlorine Treatment: Kinetics, Mechanism and Enhanced Formation of Halonitromethanes

Abstract:Ultraviolet (UV)/chlorine process is considered as an emerging advanced oxidation process for the degradation of micropollutants. This study investigated the degradation of chloramphenicol (CAP) and formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during the UV/chlorine treatment. It was found that CAP degradation was enhanced by combined UV/chlorine treatment compared to that of UV and chlorination treatment alone. The pseudo-first-order rate constant of the UV/chlorine process at pH 7.0 reached 0.016 s(-1), which was 10.0 and 2.0 folds that observed from UV and chlorination alone, respectively. The enhancement can be attributed to the formation of diverse radicals (HO center dot and reactive chlorine species (RCSs)), and the contribution of RCSs maintained more stable than that of HO center dot at pH 5.5-8.5. Meanwhile, enhanced DBPs formation during the UV/chlorine treatment was observed. Both the simultaneous formation and 24-h halonitromethanes formation potential (HNMsFP) were positively correlated with the UV/chlorine treatment time. Although the simultaneous trichloronitromethane (TCNM) formation decreased with the prolonged UV irradiation, TCNM dominated the formation of HNMs after 24 h (>97.0%). According to structural analysis of transformation by-products, both the accelerated CAP degradation and enhanced HNMs formation steps were proposed. Overall, the formation of diverse radicals during the UV/chlorine treatment accelerated the degradation of CAP, while also enhanced the formation of DBPs simultaneously, indicating the need for DBPs evaluation before the application of combined UV/chlorine process. Abstract:The removal of acetaminophen (AAP) in aqueous solution by the UV/chlorine process was evaluated. The effect of chlorine dose, the initial AAP concentration, pH value, and UV intensity on the reaction were also investigated. The degradation mechanism and the ecological risk were further discussed. The results indicated that AAP degradation fitted pseudo-first-order kinetics. Compared with UV alone or dark chlorination, the combination of UV and chlorine significantly accelerated the degradation process. The AAP degradation was positively affected by chlorine dose and UV intensity, while negatively affected by the initial AAP concentration and ammonia nitrogen concentration during the UV/chlorine process. The frontier orbital theory analysis shows that the C5 position in the benzene ring of AAP is likely to be the first site attacked by HO• and Cl• radical to form the products. Twelve intermediates were identified by Q-TOF and GC-MS. The possible degradation pathways were also proposed. Luminescent bacteria experiment and ECOSAR prediction both revealed that acute toxicity of AAP degradation could only be partially reduced. Ecological risks during the UV/chlorine process need to be further evaluated.
UV254 induced sulfamethazine and carbamazepine elimination in the presence of nitrate: Roles of reactive species and generation risk of highly toxic DBPs

Abstract:This study systematically compared the degradation kinetics, conversion pathways, formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), and changes in toxicity for sulfamethazine and carbamazepine in UV/nitrate system. Additionally, the study simulated the generation of DBPs in the post-chlorination process after the introduction of bromine ions (Br-). The contributions of UV irradiation, hydroxyl radicals (•OH), and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) to SMT degradation were determined to be 28.70 %, 11.70 %, and 59.60 %, respectively. The contributions of UV irradiation, •OH, and RNS to CBZ degradation were found to be 0.00 %, 96.90 %, and 3.10 %, respectively. A higher dosage of NO3- facilitated the degradation of both SMT and CBZ. Solution pH posed almost no effect on SMT degradation, while acidic conditions favored CBZ removal. The degradation of SMT was found to be slightly promoted at low concentrations of Cl-, while the presence of HCO3- significantly accelerated the degradation. Cl-, as well as HCO3-, retarded the CBZ degradation. Natural organic matter (NOM) as a free radical scavenger and UV irradiation filter posed a substantial inhibitory effect on the degradation of SMT and CBZ. The degradation intermediates and transformation pathways of SMT and CBZ by UV/NO3- system were further elucidated. The results showed that the main reaction pathways were bond-breaking reaction, hydroxylation, and nitration/nitrosation reaction. The acute toxicity of most of the intermediates generated during SMT and CBZ degradation was reduced after UV/NO3- treatment. After treatment of SMT and CBZ in UV/nitrate system, the DBPs generated in subsequent chlorination were mainly trichloromethane and a small amount of nitrogen-containing DBPs. After bromine ions were introduced in UV/NO3- system, a large amount of the originally generated trichloromethane was converted to tribromomethane.
Mechanisms and Toxicity Evaluation of the Degradation of Sulfamethoxazole by MPUV/PMS Process

Abstract:In this work, a sulfate radical (SO4)-based advanced oxidation process was applied to the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). In these experiments, a medium pressure UV (MPUV) lamp was employed to active peroxymonosulfate (PMS). It was found that 98% of SMX was removed by MPUV/PMS at a UV dose of 200 mJ cm(-2) (3.95 M SMX, 0.2 mM PMS, pH(0) = 3.7). Direct MPUV photolysis played a remarkable role in SMX removal by MPUV/PMS process. As for the indirect photolysis, SO4 was the major reactive species under acidic and neutral conditions in MPUV/PMS system, while the hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) became the predominant radical under alkaline conditions. The transformation products (TPs) of SMX that formed in the MPUV-only and MPUV/PMS experiments were identified, and the possible degradation pathways were proposed. Photoisomerization of the isoxazole ring was the major pathway of SMX during MPUVonly process. Hydroxylation/oxidation of the aniline and isoxazole ring was the predominant degradation mechanism of SMX by MPUV/PMS. Toxicity evaluation showed that MPUV/PMS was effective at reducing the antibacterial activity of SMX solutions, while MPUV-only was not. However, some TPs with equivalent or even higher antibacterial activity than SMX were formed during the initial degradation period in MPUV/PMS system. Ecotoxicity of SMX and its TPs was also hypothetically predicted via the ECOSAR program, and the results indicated that some TPs could be more toxic than SMX. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Degradation of iopamidol by three UV-based oxidation processes: Kinetics, pathways, and formation of iodinated disinfection byproducts

Abstract:In this study, the degradation kinetics of iopamidol (IPM) by three different UV-based oxidation processes including UV/hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), UV/persulfate (PDS) and UV/chlorine (NaClO) were examined and the potential formation of iodinated disinfection byproducts (I-DBPs) in these processes followed by sequential chlorination was comparatively investigated. Increasing pH led to the decrease of IPM degradation rate in UV/NaClO, while it showed negligible impact in UV/PDS and UV/H2O2. Common background constituents such as chloride ions (Cl-), carbonate (HCO3-) and natural organic matter (NOM) inhibited IPM degradation in UV/H2O2 and UV/PDS, while IPM degradation in UV/NaClO was only suppressed by NOM but not Cl- and HCO3-. The differences in transformation products of IPM treated by hydroxyl radical (HO*), sulfate radical (SO4*-), as well as Cl2*- and ClO* generated in these processes, respectively, were also analyzed. The results suggested that hydroxyl radical (HO*) preferred to form hydroxylated derivatives. Sulfate radical (SO4*-) preferred to oxidize amino group of IPM to nitro group, while Cl2*- and ClO* favored the generation of chlorine-containing products. Moreover, specific I-DBPs (i.e., iodoform (IF) and monoiodacetic acid (MIAA)) were detected in the three processes followed by chlorination. The addition of NOM had little effect on IF formation of three processes, while MIAA formation decreased in all processes except UV/H2O2. Given that the formation of I-DBPs in UV/NaClO was less than those formed in the other two processes, UV/NaClO seems to be a more promising strategy for effectively removing IPM with alleviation of I-DBPs in treated water effluents.
PPCP degradation by UV/chlorine treatment and its impact on DBP formation potential in real waters

Abstract:The ultraviolet/chlorine (UV/chlorine) water purification process was evaluated for its ability to degrade the residues of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) commonly found in drinking water sources. The disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formed after post-chlorination were documented. The performance of the UV/chlorine process was compared with that of the UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) process in treating three types of sand-filtered natural water. Except caffeine and carbamazepine residues, the UV/chlorine process was found to be 59-99% effective for feed water with a high level of dissolved organic carbon and alkalinity, and 27-92% effective for water with a high ammonia content. Both chlorine radicals and hydroxyl radicals were found to contribute to the observed PPCP degradation. The removal efficiencies of chlorine- and UV-resistant PPCPs such as carbamazepine and caffeine were 2-3 times greater than in the UV/H2O2 process in waters not enriched with ammonia. UV/chlorine treatment slightly enhanced the formation chloral hydrate (CH), haloketone (HK) and trichloronitromethane (TCNM). It reduced haloacetonitrile (HAN) formation during the post-chlorination in comparison with the UV/H2O2 process. In waters with high concentrations of ammonia, the UV/chlorine process was only 5-7% more effective than the UV/H2O2 process, and it formed slightly more THMs, HKs and TCNM along with reduced formation of CH and HAN. The UV/chlorine process is thus recommended as a good alternative to UV/H2O2 treatment for its superior PPCP removal without significantly enhancing DBP formation.

Abstract:The pollution of aquatic bodies in the natural environment by pharmaceuticals has become a matter of increasing concern. In this study, we investigated the effects of the various influencing factors on the degradation of phenacetin (PNT) and its disinfection byproduct formation potentials (DBPFPs) by UV/persulfate (UV/PS) treatment. We first examined the effects of factors such as the PS concentration, pH, HCO3-, NO3-, NO2-, and natural organic matter (NOM) on the PNT degradation kinetics. The PNT degradation rate exhibited a positive correlation with the PS concentration. The PNT degradation rate was also pH-dependent, and it was highest under mild-alkalinity conditions. The presence of NO3-, NO2-, and NOM all inhibited PNT degradation, whereas HCO3- slightly accelerated PNT degradation. We next adopted LC/MS/MS to identify the degradation products of PNT, and the possible degradation pathways were proposed accordingly. The effects of UV/PS pretreatment on the DBPs from chlorination exhibit a close relationship with the abovementioned factors influencing the PNT degradation performance. Upon prolonging the pretreatment time and increasing the PS concentration, it was observed that trichloromethane (TCM) formation continuously decreased, while dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) and trichloronitromethane (TCNM) exhibited patterns of increase and subsequent decrease in concentration. Mild alkalinity enhanced TCM formation and largely restrained DCAN and TCNM formation. Additionally, the presence of NOM enhanced TCM formation, while HCO3- hardly affected DBP formation. Meanwhile, NO2- profoundly affected the formation of TCNM. Therefore, these factors influencing PNT degradation by UV/PS should be carefully considered when integrating such technology as an alternative pretreatment for PNT-polluted water before disinfection.

Abstract:The enhanced elimination of flumequine by combined UV/ClO2 advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and disinfection by-products (DBPs)-related toxicity during post-disinfection were investigated. The efficient removal of flumequine by UV/ClO2 could be depicted with pseudo first order kinetics. The roles of main reactive species were identified by quenching experiments and EPR spectrum. The contributing proportions of UV photolysis, singlet oxygen (1O2), OH and reactive chlorine species (RCS) were calculated to be 11.37%, 14.72%, 19.79% and 54.12%, respectively. Then key influence factors including UV intensity, ClO2 dosages, pH and water matrices (co-present anions and nature organic matter (NOM)) were examined comprehensively. The degradation rate of flumequine (kobs) gradually increased with ClO2 dosage and UV intensity, but decreased obviously as pH ascended. The coexistence of Cl− showed negligible impact on kobs while HCO3− displayed notable inhibitory effect. However, kobs was greatly depressed by the NOM presence and the negative correlations between kobs and organic indexes were verified. Based on FT-ICR-MS analysis, the UV/ClO2 destruction pathways of flumequine were proposed to involve hydroxylation, decarboxylation, demethylation and defluorination. Comparatively, although UV/Cl2 showed better removal efficiency and lower energy requirement than UV/ClO2, the latter process induced much less toxicity connected with DBPs in post-oxidation. The results implied that the oxidation characteristics of 1O2 (non-radical pathway) varied greatly from those of OH and RCS, which may lead to the distinct advantage of UV/ClO2 in DBPs control. Take flumequine as an example, this paper is devoted to better comprehending the UV/ClO2 integrated technique. The findings may also shed light on the feasibility of UV/ClO2 and UV/Cl2 AOPs systems in tradeoffs among factors including removal effectiveness, operational cost and toxicity concerns of the treated waters containing emerging contaminants.

Abstract:The pseudo-persistence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs)in the aqueous environment may pose potential risks to human health and ecosystems. The UV disinfection in wastewater treatment plants is one of the essential processes before PPCPs enter the water environment, so it is crucial to elucidate the photolytic behavior and mechanism of PPCPs under UV radiation. In this work, carbamazepine (CBZ) and caffeine (CAF) were selected as typical pollutants to investigate the effect of water matrixes, humic acid, inorganic ions, and pH on the UV radiation performance. Hydroxyl radical (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) were identified by quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra as playing a dominant role in the degradation process. UPLC-TOF/MS was conducted to identify 13 and 14 possible intermediates of CBZ and CAF, respectively. Moreover, combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations (Frontier Molecular Orbital and Fukui index), hydroxylation, oxidation, and ring cleavage were proposed as the main degradation pathways of the contaminants, which occurred first at the C(7C), N(17 N) and O(18O) sites of CBZ and at the C(9C) site of CAF. The bio-acute toxicity experiment and the Ecological Structure-Activity Relationships (ECOSAR) program were performed to analyze and predict the toxicity of the intermediates of CBZ and CAF under UV radiation, respectively. The results showed that the acute toxicity of both solutions increased after UV radiation and followed with the combined toxicity. This work has great scientific value and practical environmental significance for evaluating the UV disinfection process and managing PPCPs in the aqueous environment.

Abstract:UV/monochloramine (NH2Cl) process has attracted some attention for the elimination of contaminants of emerging concern as a novel advanced oxidation process. However, there is still much uncertainty on the performance and mechanisms of UV/NH2Cl process because of its complexity and generation of various species of radicals, including NH2•, HO•, Cl• and other reactive chlorine species (RCS). The mechanism and influence factors of degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in the UV/NH2Cl process were investigated, and a synergistic effect was observed. Degradation of CBZ under all investigated conditions followed pseudo-first order kinetics. The corresponding rate constant increased along with the dosage of NH2Cl, and was affected significantly by the presence of bicarbonate and natural organic matter. The process has little pH-dependency, while the specific contribution of RCS and HO• changed with solution pH, and RCS always act as a major contributor to the degradation of CBZ. Eleven byproducts of CBZ were identified and their respective evolution profiles were determined. The participation of UV in chloramination can reduce the formation of nitrogenous DBPs, but promote the formation of carbonaceous DBPs. Furthermore, when influent, sand filtered, and granular activated carbon filtered water was respectively used as background, degradation of CBZ was inhibited to different degree and more disinfection byproducts (DBPs) were generated, compared to deionized water. The electrical energy per order for degradation of CBZ in the UV/NH2Cl process was also calculated to obtain some preliminary cost information.

Abstract:Many micropollutants are refractory to conventional wastewater/water treatment processes, causing attention to their potential adverse effects on aquatic environment and human health. The synchronous use of ultraviolet and chlorine (UV/chlorine) is an emerging advanced oxidation process drawing increasing interest, due to its relatively low cost and the effectiveness in degradation of refractory micropollutants via generating various reactive species, such as hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) and reactive chlorine species (RCS). This review documented the latest research on micropollutant degradation in the UV/chlorine process, and factors affecting the degradation efficiencies of target micropollutants, including UV fluence rate, chlorine dosage, pH, water matrix, and the reactivity of different radicals. Most recently, concerns have been raised over the formation of toxic transformation products and disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the UV/chlorine process. The toxicity variation of micropollutants during the UV/chlorine treatment, and the multiple effects of the UV/chlorine process on the formation of DBPs were also reviewed. It was found that the toxicity variations of micropollutants in the UV/chlorine treatment were related to the compound-specific reactivity toward center dot OH and RCS. Further studies on the cost-effectiveness of the UV/chlorine process regarding micropollutant degradation without increasing the associated toxicity might be warranted.
