Abstract:While enjoying various LBS location-based services, users also face the threats of location privacy disclosure. This is because even if the communications between users and LBS providers can be encrypted and anonymized, the sensitive information inside LBS queries may disclose the exact location or even the identity of a user. The existing research on location privacy preservation in mobile peer-to-peer P2P networks assumed that users trust each other and directly share location information with each other. Nonetheless, this assumption is not practical for most of the mobile P2P scenarios, for example, an adversary can pretend to be a normal user and collect the locations of other users. Aiming at this issue, this paper presents x-region as a solution to preserve the location privacy in a mobile P2P environment where no trust relationships are assumed amongst mobile users. The main idea is to allow users to share a blurred region known as x-region instead of their exact locations so that one cannot distinguish any user from others inside the region. We propose a theoretical metric for measuring the anonymity property of x-region, together with three algorithms for generating an x-region, namely, benchmark algorithm, weighted expanding algorithm, and aggressive weighted expanding algorithm. These algorithms achieve the anonymity and QoS requirements with different strategies. Our experiments verify the performance of the algorithms against three key metrics. PLAM: A Privacy-Preserving Framework for Local-Area Mobile Social Networks.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving framework, called PLAM, for local-area mobile social networks. The proposed PLAM framework employs a privacy-preserving request aggregation protocol with k-Anonymity and l-Diversity properties while without involving a trusted anonymizer server to keep user preference privacy when querying location-based service (LBS), and integrates unlinkable pseudo-ID technique to achieve user identity privacy, location privacy. Moreover, the proposed PLAM framework also introduces the privacy-preserving and verifiable polynomial computation to keep LBS provider's functions private while preventing the provider from cheating in computation. Detailed security analysis shows that the proposed PLAM framework can not only achieve desirable privacy requirements but also resist outside attacks on source authentication, data integrity and availability. In addition, extensive simulations are also conducted, and simulation results guide us on how to set proper thresholds for k-anonymity, l-diversity to make a tradeoff between the desirable user preference privacy level and the request delay in different scenarios.

Abstract:Contemporarily, the fast development of computing, communication, and storage technology has revolutionized the way that various data-based applications reach massive data from underlying sensor networks. However, such a process also raises two challenging but critical issues: 1) trustworthy and 2) privacy issue for data collectors. Therefore, this article proposes a novel system, which is designed over the distributed mobile-edge network to sufficiently exploit advantages of blockchain and differential privacy (DP) to collect trustworthy data and protect privacy for data collectors. First, to improve trustworthiness of data collections, a new consensus mechanism is proposed for blockchain-based data collection structure, which comprehensively incorporates trustworthy, collection contribution, and throughput together to prefer data collectors for the next block. Second, with the assistance of fully trusted devices, a verifiable trustworthy evaluation strategy is designed to accurately compute the trustworthiness for data collectors. Third, we enforce DP on the data stored in a global blockchain maintained by the cloud server to protect privacy for data collectors without influencing data availability. Finally, both theoretical analyses and experimental results prove that the proposed system comprehensively improves performance of data collections in distributed network without adding any additional cost for the cloud server, compared to other schemes.

A Robust Reputation-Based Location-Privacy Recommender System Using Opportunistic Networks.

Abstract:Location-sharing services have grown in use commensurately with the increasing popularity of smart phones. As location data can be sensitive, it is important to preserve people's privacy while using such services, and so location-privacy recommender systems have been proposed to help people configure their privacy settings. These recommenders collect and store people's data in a centralised system, but these themselves can introduce new privacy threats and concerns. In this paper, we propose a decentralised location-privacy recommender system based on opportunistic networks. We evaluate our system using real-world location-privacy traces, and introduce a reputation scheme based on encounter frequencies to mitigate the potential effects of shilling attacks by malicious users. Experimental results show that, after receiving adequate data, our decentralised recommender system's performance is close to the performance of traditional centralised recommender systems (3% difference in accuracy and 1% difference in leaks). Meanwhile, our reputation scheme significantly mitigates the effect of malicious users' input (from 55% to 8% success) and makes it increasingly expensive to conduct such attacks.

Abstract:Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) is an efficient approach for large-scale sensing data collection by leveraging the mobility and capability of mobile devices. To avoid the weaknesses of traditional centralized crowdsensing systems, blockchain has been introduced to secure the process of MCS. This paper studies a location-aware scenario, where privacy of users are protected in a blockchain- based MCS system, and formulates an optimization problem to maximize the coverage given a budget based on reverse auction. An incentive mechanism named MMCB is further proposed and implemented as smart contracts in blockchain to solve the problem. We demonstrate that the mechanism achieves a set of desirable properties, including computation efficiency, individual rationality, truthfulness, budget feasibility, approximation, and privacy preservation. To protect the identity privacy of workers and obtain anonymity, a linkable ring signature is employed in smart contracts. In addition, a Pedersen commitment is utilized for protecting workers’ bid profile and the submitted sensing data is encrypted and only accessible to the requester. We implement a prototype system based on the Hyperledger Fabric platform, and the evaluation results show that our privacy-preserving incentive mechanism architecture improves 36.2% coverage and reduces 53.1% payment with better security level compared to the state-of-the-art schemes.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) devices possessed by individuals produce massive amounts of data. The private data onto specific IoT devices can be combined with intelligent platform to provide help for future research and prediction. As an important digital asset, individuals can sell private data to get rewards. Problems, such as privacy, security, and access control prevent individuals from sharing their private data. The blockchain technology is widely used to build an anonymous trading system. In this article, we construct a blockchain-based privacy-preserving and rewarding private data-sharing scheme (BPRPDS) for IoT. A privacy issue worth considering is that the malicious cloud server may establish a behavior profile database of data users (DUs). In the case of anonymity, the transactions of private data sharing are easy to cause disputes. When anonymous DUs are framed, it is hard to protect their rights. With the help of the deniable ring signature and Monero, we realize the behavior profile building prevention and nonframeability of BPRPDS. At the same time, we utilize the licensing technology executed by smart contracts to ensure flexible access control of multisharing. The proposed BPRPDS is provably secure. Performance analysis and experimental results show that BPRPDS is efficient and practical.

Abstract:Activity-tracking applications and location-based services using short-range communication (SRC) techniques have been abruptly demanded in the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for automated contact tracing. The attention from both public and policy keeps raising on related practical problems, including \textit{1) how to protect data security and location privacy? 2) how to efficiently and dynamically deploy SRC Internet of Thing (IoT) witnesses to monitor large areas?} To answer these questions, in this paper, we propose a decentralized and permissionless blockchain protocol, named \textit{Bychain}. Specifically, 1) a privacy-preserving SRC protocol for activity-tracking and corresponding generalized block structure is developed, by connecting an interactive zero-knowledge proof protocol and the key escrow mechanism. As a result, connections between personal identity and the ownership of on-chain location information are decoupled. Meanwhile, the owner of the on-chain location data can still claim its ownership without revealing the private key to anyone else. 2) An artificial potential field-based incentive allocation mechanism is proposed to incentivize IoT witnesses to pursue the maximum monitoring coverage deployment. We implemented and evaluated the proposed blockchain protocol in the real-world using the Bluetooth 5.0. The storage, CPU utilization, power consumption, time delay, and security of each procedure and performance of activities are analyzed. The experiment and security analysis is shown to provide a real-world performance evaluation.

Abstract:The reliability and accuracy of cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) in cognitive radio networks (CRNs) are highly dependent on the integrity of the shared spectrum sensing data. However, driven by selfishness and malicious intentions, secondary users (SUs) may launch SSDF attacks, resulting in the damage to the integrity of sensing data, which will seriously affect the performance of CRNs, especially under massive SSDF attacks. Therefore, a blockchain-based CSS model is firstly proposed and a reputation-based consensus mechanism, named proof of reputation (PoR), is designed to enable CSS to countermeasure massive SSDF attacks in an environmentally friendly manner while supporting the operation of blockchain. Secondly, a reputation evaluation scheme based on extended sensing time and transmission result is developed to evaluate the reputation of SUs. In addition, in order to maximize the recognition performance of SSDF attacks, a closed-form expression of the optimal decision threshold constrained by the misjudged probability of honest SU is derived. Finally, the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed PoR consensus algorithm against massive SSDF attacks are demonstrated by comparing the simulation with the existing solutions.

Abstract:In the Internet of Things (IoT), the selection of mobile users with IoT-enabled devices plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficiency and accuracy of data collection. The reputation of these mobile users is a key indicator in selecting high-quality participants, as it directly reflects the reliability of the data they submit and their past performance. However, existing approaches often rely on a trusted centralized server, which can lead to single points of failure and increased vulnerability to attacks. Additionally, they may not adequately address the potential manipulation of reputation scores by malicious entities, leading to unreliable and potentially compromised user selection. To address these challenges, we propose PRUS, a privacy-preserving and quality-aware user selection scheme for IoT. By leveraging the decentralized and immutable nature of the blockchain, PRUS enhances the reliability of the user selection process. The scheme utilizes a public-key cryptosystem with distributed decryption to protect the privacy of users' data and reputation, while truth discovery techniques are employed to ensure the accuracy of the collected data. Furthermore, a privacy-preserving verification algorithm using reputation commitment is developed to safeguard against the malicious tampering of reputation scores. Finally, the Dirichlet distribution is used to predict future reputation values, further improving the robustness of the selection process. Security analysis demonstrates that PRUS effectively protects user privacy, and experimental results indicate that the scheme offers significant advantages in terms of communication and computational efficiency.

Abstract:Reputation systems are an important means to facilitate trustworthy interactions between on-and off-chain services and users. However, contemporary reputation systems are typically dependent on a trusted central authority to preserve privacy of raters or on adding noise into the user feedback. Moreover, the accuracy of reputation values relies on the integrity of user feedback or input; this feedback should not be tampered with or misused for other purposes. This paper presents blockchain-based reputation system named REPUTABLE (A Decentralized Reputation System for blockchain-based Ecosystems), which computes the reputation of service providers and external services within a blockchain ecosystem through decentralized on-chain and off-chain implementation. Specifically, REPUTABLE not only ensures privacy, but also reliability, integrity and accuracy of reputation values, while incurring minimal overhead. It also enables performing certain data or statistical analytics functions on user feedback, whilst preserving security, privacy, accountability and unlinkability of participants and their feedback. We present a proof-of-concept implementation and a demonstration of the REPUTABLE system. Finally, by means of formal and empirical evaluation, we show the effectiveness of our proposed system to preserve the anonymity of user feedback and the high performance of its blockchain-based implementation.

Abstract:In order to obtain evidence of a crime timely, most authorities encourage whistleblowers to provide valuable reports by rewarding them with prizes. However, criminals will try their best to delete or tamper with the reports and even threaten and revenge the whistleblowers to escape punishment. Hence, to make the reporting system work, it is essential to ensure the integrity of reported messages and the anonymity of the reporting and rewarding procedures in the reporting system. Most existing schemes for this problem are generally based on ring signatures, which incur high computational overhead and imperfect anonymity. In this paper, we introduce a novel practical blockchain-based privacy-preserving reporting system with rewards dubbed as PriRPT. Specifically, the proposed scheme integrates the permissioned blockchain system, keyed-verification anonymous credential (KVAC), and structure-preserving signatures on equivalence classes (SPS-EQ) to provide reliable auditing of reports, and support anonymous reporting and anonymous rewarding simultaneously. In addition, we achieve higher efficiency in the reporting and rewarding protocol by replacing costly zero-knowledge proofs with KVAC and SPS-EQ. We also formalize the scheme along with security proof and provide rigorous evaluations on an open blockchain platform (JUICE) and a personal laptop to demonstrate its practicability.

Abstract:Mobile crowdsensing (MCS), as a novel large-scale data acquisition method, has attracted more and more attention. Since the participants' quality directly affects the quality of perceptual task completion in MCS, participant selection has become a focus of researchers. However, due to the sparsity of participants' information and data privacy, existing solutions have certain limitations in terms of security and accuracy in participant selection. To tackle these problems, this paper proposes a secure and accurate participant selection (SAPS) method. It employs blockchain-based cross-domain reputation sharing while labeling participants with personalized reputation tags as quality references to achieve security and accuracy in participant selection. In particular, SAPS utilizes a model of differential privacy to protect privacy during cross-domain sharing while guaranteeing the credibility of the data sources by leveraging the traceability and non-tamper nature of the blockchain. Comprehensive experiments on real datasets indicate that compared with CMABA, the tasks' completion quality in SAPS is improved by 18%, and the execution cost of SAPS is reduced by 6%.

BCPPT: A blockchain-based privacy-preserving and traceability identity management scheme for intellectual property

Abstract:Currently, more and more intellectual property (IP) applications, including blockchain-based platforms, are presented to protect personal intellectual achievement. However, these applications are independent of each other, and the user’s identity information is controlled by an organization, which may not only reveal the user’s identity information due to the single point of failure, but also add extra communication overhead when the user accesses other applications. Additionally, current research focuses on the user’s control over their information, while the IP field requires tracing the user’s identity information in the event of IP dispute. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based privacy-preserving and traceability identity management scheme for IP, where the user’s identity information is private and traceable. Our proposed scheme lets users generate their identity (ID) and corresponding public keys and private keys. Key pairs are used for authentication when accessing the services. We use blockchain to record ID and public key of the legitimate user, and adopt improved-Shamir secret sharing to achieve privacy-preserving and traceability of real identity information and reduce storage overhead. Experimental results confirm that our proposed scheme can protect user’s privacy and effectively reduce storage and computation overhead.

Abstract:Participatory Sensing is an emerging computing paradigm that enables the distributed collection of data by self-selected participants. It allows the increasing number of mobile phone users to share local knowledge acquired by their sensor-equipped devices, e.g., to monitor temperature, pollution level or consumer pricing information. While research initiatives and prototypes proliferate, their real-world impact is often bounded to comprehensive user participation. If users have no incentive, or feel that their privacy might be endangered, it is likely that they will not participate. In this article, we focus on privacy protection in Participatory Sensing and introduce a suitable privacy-enhanced infrastructure. First, we provide a set of definitions of privacy requirements for both data producers (i.e., users providing sensed information) and consumers (i.e., applications accessing the data). Then, we propose an efficient solution designed for mobile phone users, which incurs very low overhead. Finally, we discuss a number of open problems and possible research directions.

Abstract:Participatory sensing enables collection, processing, dissemination and analysis of environmental sensory data by ordinary citizens, through mobile devices. Researchers have recognized the potential of participatory sensing and attempted applying it to many areas. However, participants may submit low quality, misleading, inaccurate, or even malicious data. Therefore, finding a way to improve the data quality has become a significant issue. This study proposes using reputation management to classify the gathered data and provide useful information for campaign organizers and data analysts to facilitate their decisions.

Abstract:The novel sensing paradigm known as crowdsensing leverages ubiquitous smart devices to collect data in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Traditional crowdsensing schemes assume a central framework to execute truth discovery algorithm to assure data quality, which may introduce reliability and privacy issues. Blockchain is a promising technology that provides a decentralized, transparent, and immutable platform. However, designing a blockchain-based quality assurance scheme in crowdsensing is not a trivial problem. First, truth discovery is a time-consuming iterative algorithm, which is not practical to execute on blockchain. Second, privacy-preserving schemes always require that the participants join in multi-round communications, which is not acceptable in open blockchain because of users’ highly unpredictable behaviors. Finally, on-chain data are publicly accessible, and achieving a good balance between data utility and privacy is an important issue. In this paper, we propose a lightweight quality assurance framework atop blockchain to build a reliable, privacy-preserving, and fair crowdsensing system. Specifically, we carefully design two kinds of smart contracts to cooperatively maintain a long-term reliable platform to execute crowdsensing tasks. In the contracts, we devise a reputation-based aggregator selection algorithm to reach the consensus on truthful results while avoiding expensive on-chain iterative processes. The participant selection scheme and reward policy are further utilized to filter appropriate participants to complete the task. Our scheme also protects data privacy and does not require communications between participants. Finally, we implement and deploy the contracts on Ethereum and conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate that the contracts can practically execute crowdsensing tasks.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a trust-centric privacy-preserving blockchain for dynamic spectrum access in IoT networks. To be specific, we propose a trust evaluation mechanism to evaluate the trustworthiness of sensing nodes and design a Proof-of-Trust (PoT) consensus mechanism to build a scalable blockchain with high transaction-per-second (TPS). Moreover, a privacy protection scheme is proposed to protect sensors' real-time geolocatioin information when they upload sensing data to the blockchain. Two smart contracts are designed to make the whole procedure (spectrum sensing, spectrum auction, and spectrum allocation) run automatically. Simulation results demonstrate the expected computation cost of the PoT consensus algorithm for reliable sensing nodes is low, and the cooperative sensing performance is improved with the help of trust value evaluation <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://mechanism.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> addition, incentivization and security are also analyzed, which show that our design not only can encourage nodes' participation, but also resist to many kinds of attacks which are frequently encountered in trust-based blockchain systems.

Abstract:Discerning ground-truth amidst misinformation is a nontrivial task in decentralized networks. While trivial for traditional blockchain networks using Proof of Work (PoW) consensus, it requires immense computational resources at the cost of network scalability and therefore has compatibility challenges with limited devices like Internet of Things (IoT) networks. Moving towards a lightweight alternative - a novel scheme is proposed for provable identification of reputable nodes for making intelligent decisions using distributed machine-learning optimization, called Weight-Based Reputation (WBR). A distributed learning task identifies nodes that are willing to cooperate as a means for securing ground-truth, and is provably resistant to data poisoning in theory and experimentation. A novel method combining WBR with a classifier creates lightweight and robust blockchain decision-making. The results of this two-step approach is a novel method for predicting various attacks that result transaction log, such as fraud or the double-spend. A Bayesian game against adversary manipulation formulation and experimental results show superior performance and robustness to the state-of-the-art. Resource consumption compared against blockchain protocols is also provided. Future work will explore WBR in distributed consensus as a complete alternative to blockchain PoW.

Abstract:E-commerce platforms incorporate reputation systems that allow customers to rate suppliers following financial transactions. Existing reputation systems cannot defend the centralized server against arbitrarily tampering with the supplier's reputation. Furthermore, they do not offer reputation access across platforms. Rates are faced with privacy leakages because rating activities are correlated with privacy (e.g., identity and rating). Meanwhile, raters could be malicious and initiate multiple rating attacks and abnormal rating attacks. Determining how to address these issues have both research and practical value. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based privacy-preserving reputation system for e-commerce platforms named RepChain; our system allows cross-platform reputation access and anonymous and private ratings. Using RepChain, all e-commerce platforms collaborate and share users' reputations by co-constructing a consortium blockchain and modeling the rating process as a finite state machine. In particular, we facilitate one-show anonymous credentials constructed from two-move blind signatures to protect customers' identities and resist multiple rating attacks, leverage zero-knowledge range proof to verify the correctness of ratings and defend against abnormal rating attacks, design a secure sum computation protocol among nodes to update reputations, and verify ratings via batch processing and consensus hashes. Finally, we demonstrate the security and privacy of RepChain via a formal analysis and evaluate its performance based on Ethereum test network.
