Abstract:In nature, arthropods have a remarkably sophisticated class of imaging systems, with a hemispherical geometry, a wide-angle field of view, low aberrations, high acuity to motion and an infinite depth of field. There are great interests in building systems with similar geometries and properties due to numerous potential applications. However, the established semiconductor sensor technologies and optics are essentially planar, which experience great challenges in building such systems with hemispherical, compound apposition layouts. With the recent advancement of stretchable optoelectronics, we have successfully developed strategies to build a fully functional artificial apposition compound eye camera by combining optics, materials and mechanics principles. The strategies start with fabricating stretchable arrays of thin silicon photodetectors and elastomeric optical elements in planar geometries, which are then precisely aligned and integrated, and elastically transformed to hemispherical shapes. This imaging device demonstrates nearly full hemispherical shape (about 160 degrees), with densely packed artificial ommatidia. The number of ommatidia (180) is comparable to those of the eyes of fire ants and bark beetles. We have illustrated key features of operation of compound eyes through experimental imaging results and quantitative ray-tracing-based simulations. The general strategies shown in this development could be applicable to other compound eye devices, such as those inspired by moths and lacewings (refracting superposition eyes), lobster and shrimp (reflecting superposition eyes), and houseflies (neural superposition eyes).

Abstract:Visual systems provide a key interface between organisms and their surroundings, and have evolved in many forms to perform diverse functions across the animal kingdom. Spiders exhibit a range of visual abilities and ecologies, the diversity of which is underpinned by a highly versatile, modular visual system architecture. This typically includes eight eyes of two developmentally distinct types, but the number, size, location, and function of the eyes can vary dramatically between lineages. Previous studies of visual system development in spiders have confirmed that many components of the retinal determination gene (RDG) network are conserved with other arthropods, but so far, comparative studies among spiders are lacking. We characterised visual system development in eight species of spiders representing a range of morphologies, visual ecologies, and phylogenetic positions, to determine how these diverse configurations are formed, and how they might evolve. Combining synchrotron radiation tomography, transcriptomics, in situ hybridisation, and selection analyses, we characterise the repertoires and expression of key RDGs in relation to adult morphology. We identify key molecular players, timepoints, and developmental events that may contribute to adult diversity, in particular the molecular and developmental underpinnings of eye size, number, position, and identity across spiders.

Looking across the gap: Understanding the evolution of eyes and vision among insects

Abstract:The graphical abstract illustrates research on insectcompound eyes that have recently made important contributions tounderstanding their evolution, development and function across species.Evolutionary changes in the regulation of compound eye development andthe underlying neural networks resulting in differences in eye structureand how information is processed underlie diversity in insect visualsystems. Understanding this diversity requires characterising the geneticand developmental bases of differences in eye structure and function,and their adaptive significance. The compound eyes of insects exhibit stunning variation in size, structure, and function, which has allowed these animals to use their vision to adapt to a huge range of different environments and lifestyles, and evolve complex behaviors. Much of our knowledge of eye development has been learned from Drosophila, while visual adaptations and behaviors are often more striking and better understood from studies of other insects. However, recent studies in Drosophila and other insects, including bees, beetles, and butterflies, have begun to address this gap by revealing the genetic and developmental bases of differences in eye morphology and key new aspects of compound eye structure and function. Furthermore, technical advances have facilitated the generation of high‐resolution connectomic data from different insect species that enhances our understanding of visual information processing, and the impact of changes in these processes on the evolution of vision and behavior. Here, we review these recent breakthroughs and propose that future integrated research from the development to function of visual systems within and among insect species represents a great opportunity to understand the remarkable diversification of insect eyes and vision.

It's not all black and white: visual scene parameters influence optokinetic reflex performance in Xenopus laevis tadpoles

Abstract:ABSTRACT The maintenance of visual acuity during active and passive body motion is ensured by gaze-stabilizing reflexes that aim at minimizing retinal image slip. For the optokinetic reflex (OKR), large-field visual motion of the surround forms the essential stimulus that activates eye movements. Properties of the moving visual world influence cognitive motion perception and the estimation of visual image velocity. Therefore, the performance of brainstem-mediated visuo-motor behaviors might also depend on image scene characteristics. Employing semi-intact preparations of mid-larval stages of Xenopus laevis tadpoles, we studied the influence of contrast polarity, intensity, contour shape and different motion stimulus patterns on the performance of the OKR and multi-unit optic nerve discharge during motion of a large-field visual scene. At high contrast intensities, the OKR amplitude was significantly larger for visual scenes with a positive contrast (bright dots on a dark background) compared with those with a negative contrast. This effect persisted for luminance-matched pairs of stimuli, and was independent of contour shape. The relative biases of OKR performance along with the independence of the responses from contour shape were closely matched by the optic nerve discharge evoked by the same visual stimuli. However, the multi-unit activity of retinal ganglion cells in response to a small single moving vertical edge was strongly influenced by the light intensity in the vertical neighborhood. This suggests that the underlying mechanism of OKR biases related to contrast polarity directly derives from visual motion-processing properties of the retinal circuitry.

Abstract:The restructuring of the gaze stabilization system in Pelobates fuscus was investigated by quantitative analysis of the optomotor response using video imaging. Gaze stabilization is an important component in the system of neural mechanisms of visual depth perception. It was shown that the optomotor response in aquatic tadpoles of P. fuscus is similar to that of fish (movement of the animal in the direction of the visual background movement and eye nystagmus consisting of a fast and a slow phase). During metamorphosis (transition from the aquatic to the terrestrial lifestyle), froglets of P. fuscus responded to the movement of the visual background by eyes and head movements. One year after metamorphosis, P. fuscus responded to movement of the visual background as adult Anura: only by head movements (a slow and a fast phase), while eye movements were absent. Possible causes of the loss of active eye movements by Anura amphibians in the process of evolution are discussed.

Abstract:Lampreys, which represent the oldest group of living vertebrates (cyclostomes), show unique eye development. The lamprey larva has only eyespot-like immature eyes beneath a non-transparent skin, whereas after metamorphosis, the adult has well-developed image-forming camera eyes. To establish a functional visual system, well-organised visual centres as well as motor components (e.g. trunk muscles for locomotion) and interactions between them are needed. Here we review the available knowledge concerning the structure, function and development of the different parts of the lamprey visual system. The lamprey exhibits stepwise development of the visual system during its life cycle. In prolarvae and early larvae, the 'primary' retina does not have horizontal and amacrine cells, but does have photoreceptors, bipolar cells and ganglion cells. At this stage, the optic nerve projects mostly to the pretectum, where the dendrites of neurons in the nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (nMLF) appear to receive direct visual information and send motor outputs to the neck and trunk muscles. This simple neural circuit may generate negative phototaxis. Through the larval period, the lateral region of the retina grows again to form the 'secondary' retina and the topographic retinotectal projection of the optic nerve is formed, and at the same time, the extra-ocular muscles progressively develop. During metamorphosis, horizontal and amacrine cells differentiate for the first time, and the optic tectum expands and becomes laminated. The adult lamprey then has a sophisticated visual system for image-forming and visual decision-making. In the adult lamprey, the thalamic pathway (retina-thalamus-cortex/pallium) also transmits visual stimuli. Because the primary, simple light-detecting circuit in larval lamprey shares functional and developmental similarities with that of protochordates (amphioxus and tunicates), the visual development of the lamprey provides information regarding the evolutionary transition of the vertebrate visual system from the protochordate-type to the vertebrate-type.

Abstract:Background: By examining species-specific innate behaviours, neuroethologists have characterised unique neural strategies and specializations from throughout the animal kingdom. Simultaneously, the field of evolutionary developmental biology (informally, “evo-devo”) seeks to make inferences about animals’ evolutionary histories through careful comparison of developmental processes between species, because evolution is the evolution of development. Yet despite the shared focus on cross-species comparisons, there is surprisingly little cross-talk between these two fields. Insights can be gleaned at the intersection of neuroethology and evo-devo. Every animal develops within an environment, wherein ecological pressures advantage some behaviours and disadvantage others. These pressures are reflected in the neurodevelopmental strategies employed by different animals across taxa. Summary: Vision is a system of particular interest for studying the adaptation of animals to their environments. The visual system enables a wide variety of animals across the vertebrate lineage to interact with their environments, presenting a fantastic opportunity to examine how ecological pressures have shaped animals’ behaviours and developmental strategies. Applying a neuroethological lens to the study of visual development, we advance a novel theory that accounts for the evolution of spontaneous retinal waves, an important phenomenon in the development of the visual system, across the vertebrate lineage. Key Messages: We synthesise literature on spontaneous retinal waves from across the vertebrate lineage. We find that ethological considerations explain some cross-species differences in the dynamics of retinal waves. In zebrafish, retinal waves may be more important for the development of the retina itself, rather than the retinofugal projections. We additionally suggest empirical tests to determine whether Xenopus laevis experiences retinal waves.

Investments in photoreceptors compete with investments in optics to determine eye design

Abstract:Because an animal invests in an eye’s optics and photoreceptor array to meet behavioural needs at minimum cost, optics and photoreceptors compete for resources to maximise eye performance. This competition has not previously been investigated. Its outcome depends on the relative costs and benefits of investing space, materials and energy in optics and photoreceptors. We introduce a measure of cost, specific volume in µm sr , which relates to performance via optical, physiological and geometrical constraints. We model apposition compound eyes and simple (camera type) eyes to calculate the performance surface across the morphospace of eyes of given type and total cost. This surface identifies the allocation of resources that maximises efficiency and shows how efficiency reduces as eye morphology departs from optimum. Using published data, we calculate specific volumes to estimate the investments in optics and photoreceptors that insects make, and compare these with our models. We find that efficient allocation can explain three robust trends: fast flying diurnal insects allocate 50% of eye volume to photoreceptor arrays, their photoreceptors’ photosensitive waveguides (rhabdomeres, rhabdoms) are much longer than simple eyes’, and length increases systematically with spatial resolution. We conclude that photoreceptor costs often equal or exceed optical costs, therefore competition between optics and photoreceptors for resources is a major factor in eye design, and matching investments in optics and photoreceptors to maximise efficiency is a design principle. Our methodology can be developed to view the adaptive radiation of eyes through a cost:benefit lens.

Abstract:The insect compound eye is the most abundant eye architecture on earth. It comes in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, which are exquisitely adapted to specific ecosystems. Here, we explore the organisational principles and pathways, from molecular to tissular, that underpin the building of this organ and highlight why it is an excellent model system to investigate the relationship between genes and tissue form. The compound eye offers wide fields of view, high sensitivity in motion detection and infinite depth of field. It is made of an array of visual units called ommatidia, which are precisely tiled in 3D to shape the retinal tissue as a dome-like structure. The eye starts off as a 2D epithelium, and it acquires its 3D organisation as ommatidia get into shape. Each ommatidium is made of a complement of retinal cells, including light-detecting photoreceptors and lens-secreting cells. The lens cells generate the typical hexagonal facet lens that lies atop the photoreceptors so that the eye surface consists of a quasi-crystalline array of these hexagonal facet-lenses. This array is curved to various degree, depending on the size and shape of the eye, and on the region of the retina. This curvature sets the resolution and visual field of the eye and is determined by i) the number and size of the facet lens - large ommatidial lenses can be used to generate flat, higher resolution areas, while smaller facets allow for stronger curvature of the eye, and ii) precise control of the inter facet-lens angle, which determines the optical axis of the each ommatidium. In this review we discuss how combinatorial variation in eye primordium shape, ommatidial number, facet lens size and inter facet-lens angle underpins the wide variety of insect eye shapes, and we explore what is known about the mechanisms that might control these parameters.

Abstract:Commentary to: Immunization trials with an avian chlamydial MOMP gene recombinant adenovirus Changqing Qiu, Jizhang Zhou, Xiao-an Cao, Guozhen Lin, Fuying Zheng and Xiaowei Gong Chlamydophila psittaci is a zoonotic, intracellular bacterium, found in a wide range of birds, and is the causative agent of psittacosis, or avian chlamydiosis (AC). AC, as well as having significant zoonotic potential, causes high mortality in domestic birds, and there is no effective commercial vaccine. The group of Zhou et al. has generated recombinant adenovirus vaccines, which exhibit significant potential for the prophylactic treatment of poultry. Reduction of AC will affect not only the disease and associated mortality, but should also reduce the incidence of the carrier state, and should improve breeding performance in birds. Design and successful vaccine implementation also has the potential to improve human health, by decreasing zoonotic risk and should also reduce the risk of emergence of antibiotic resistant strains.
A role of color vision in emmetropization in C57BL/6J mice

Abstract:Spectral composition affects emmetropization in both humans and animal models. Because color vision interacts the effects of chromatic defocus, we developed a method to bypass the effects of longitudinal chromatic aberration by placing a spectral filter behind the optics of the eye, using genetic tools. Newborn C57BL/6J (B6) mice were reared in quasi-monochromatic red (585–660 nm) or blue (410–510 nm) light beginning before eye-opening. Refractive states and ocular dimensions were compared at 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks with mice reared in normal white light. Cre recombinase-dependent Ai9 reporter mice were crossed with Chx10-Cre to obtain Chx10-Cre;Ai9 mice, expressing red fluorescent protein in retinal Cre-positive cells. Ai9 offsprings, with and without Cre, were reared under a normal visual environment. Refraction and axial components were measured as described above. Expression levels of M and S opsin were quantified by western blotting at 10 weeks. Compared with those reared in white light, B6 mice reared in red light developed relative hyperopia, principally characterized by flattening of corneal curvature. Emmetropization was not affected by blue light, possibly because the reduction in vitreous chamber depth compensated for the increase in corneal curvature. Compared with Cre -negative littermates, the refraction and axial dimensions of Chx10-Cre;Ai9 mice were not significantly different at the follow-up timepoints. M opsin levels were higher in Chx10-Cre;Ai9 mice at 10 weeks while S opsin levels were not different. Red light induced a hyperopic shift in mouse refractive development. Emmetropization was not impacted in mice with perturbed color vision caused by intrinsic red-fluorescent protein, suggesting that color vision may not be necessary in mouse emmetropization when other mechanisms are present.
Image motion with color contrast suffices to elicit an optokinetic reflex in Xenopus laevis tadpoles

Abstract:Abstract The optokinetic reflex is a closed-loop gaze-stabilizing ocular motor reaction that minimizes residual retinal image slip during vestibulo-ocular reflexes. In experimental isolation, the reflex is usually activated by motion of an achromatic large-field visual background with strong influence of radiance contrast on visual motion estimation and behavioral performance. The presence of color in natural environments, however, suggests that chromatic cues of visual scenes provide additional parameters for image motion detection. Here, we employed Xenopus laevis tadpoles to study the influence of color cues on the performance of the optokinetic reflex and multi-unit optic nerve discharge during motion of a large-field visual scene. Even though the amplitude of the optokinetic reflex decreases with smaller radiance contrast, considerable residual eye movements persist at the ‘point of equiluminance’ of the colored stimuli. Given the color motion preferences of individual optic nerve fibers, the underlying computation potentially originates in retinal circuits. Differential retinal ganglion cell projections and associated ocular motor signal transformation might further reinforce the color dependency in conceptual correspondence with head/body optomotor signaling. Optokinetic reflex performance under natural light conditions is accordingly influenced by radiance contrast as well as by the color composition of the moving visual scene.

New insights into the evolution of lateral compound eyes in Palaeozoic horseshoe crabs

Abstract:Abstract Vision allows animals to interact with their environment. Aquatic chelicerates dominate the early record of lateral compound eyes among non-biomineralizing crown-group euarthropods. Although the conservative morphology of lateral eyes in Xiphosura is potentially plesiomorphic for Euarthropoda, synziphosurine eye organization has received little attention despite their early diverging phylogenetic position. Here, we re-evaluate the fossil evidence for lateral compound eyes in the synziphosurines Bunodes sp., Cyamocephalus loganensis, Legrandella lombardii, Limuloides limuloides, Pseudoniscus clarkei, Pseudoniscus falcatus and Pseudoniscus roosevelti. We compare these data with lateral eyes in the euchelicerates Houia yueya, Kasibelinurus amicorum and Lunataspis aurora. We find no convincing evidence for lateral eyes in most studied taxa, and Pseudoniscus roosevelti and Legrandella lombardii are the only synziphosurines with this feature. Our findings support two scenarios for euchelicerate lateral eye evolution. The elongate-crescentic lateral eyes of Legrandella lombardii might represent the ancestral organization, as suggested by the phylogenetic position of this taxon in stem-group Euchelicerata. Alternatively, the widespread occurrence of kidney-shaped lateral eyes in stem-group Xiphosura and stem-group Arachnida could represent the plesiomorphic condition; Legrandella lombardii eyes would therefore be derived. Both evolutionary scenarios support the interpretation that kidney-shaped lateral eyes are ancestral for crown-group Euchelicerata and morphologically conserved in extant Limulus polyphemus.

Abstract:Optic photoreception is a critical function for animal survival. Across the evolutionary spectrum, diverse animal models have been used to investigate visual system function and potential mechanisms under physiological or pathophysiological states. However less is known on photoreceptive behaviors and retinal processing in invertebrates, especially molluscs. This study focuses on the freshwater pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis ( L . stagnalis ), to explore its visual function and underlying mechanisms. Using anatomical and histological approaches we characterized the L . stagnalis eye structure and demonstrated structural connections and retinal rhodopsin-positive sensory cells potentially critical for phototransduction. To assess the snail phototactic responses, we developed a new neurobehavioral protocol and employed DeepLabCut to track and quantify animal locomotion. We demonstrated that L . stagnalis exhibits a positive locomotory response to intense focal light and has diverse photo-locomotory responses. Further, we conducted phylogenetic and protein structure analyses and demonstrated that L . stagnalis has a unique repertoire of both vertebrate and invertebrate phototransduction genes. Further characterization of a rhodopsin-like gene identified unique characteristics compared to other mollusks and vertebrates, suggesting different mechanisms of phototransduction. Taken together, our work establishes L . stagnalis as a model organism for studying optic photoreception, offering new insights into the evolution and diversity of visual function across animal species.

High quality MPEG-audio layer III algorithm for a 16-bit DSP

Abstract:This paper presents a high quality MPEG-1/2 layer-III decoding algorithm, which is optimized for a 16-bit fixed-point arithmetic. Motorola DSP56600 16-bit DSP family processor is chosen as a target processor, and quantization noise due to fixed-point arithmetic is minimized for each decoding routine via C language-based fixed-point simulations. To maintain high audio quality with limited data precision, finite word length effects of each routine are evaluated. Also, double-precision arithmetic is tried for each routine and their effects are analyzed. Furthermore, to compromise the audio quality with the system complexity, the evaluation is extended to several fast algorithms for IMDCT and sub-band synthesis. To measure the quality of decoded output, ISO/IEC 13818-4 compliance test sequence is applied to the proposed algorithm. This test showed that the proposed decoding algorithms ensured full compliance with ISO/IEC 13818-3 audio decoder.

Abstract:Depletion of dendritic cells from UV‐B‐irradiated sheep skin was investigated by monitoring migration of these cells towards regional lymph nodes. By creating and cannulating pseudoafferent lymphatic vessels draining a defined region of skin, migrating cells were collected and enumerated throughout the response to UV‐B irradiation. In the present study, the effects of exposing sheep flank skin to UV‐B radiation clearly demonstrated a dose‐dependent increase in the migration of Langerhans cells (LC) from the UV‐B‐exposed area to the draining lymph node. The range of UV‐B doses assessed in this study included 2.7 kJ/m2, a suberythemal dose; 8 kJ/m2, 1 minimal erythemal dose (MED); 20.1 kJ/m2; 40.2 kJ/m2; and 80.4 kJ/m2, 10 MED. The LC were the cells most sensitive to UV‐B treatment, with exposure to 8 kJ/m2 or greater reproducibly causing a significant increase in migration. Migration of γδ+ dendritic cells (γδ+ DC) from irradiated skin was also triggered by exposure to UV‐B radiation, but dose dependency was not evident within the range of UV‐B doses examined. This, in conjunction with the lack of any consistent correlation between either the timing or magnitude of migration peaks of these two cell types, suggests that different mechanisms govern the egress of LC and γδ+ DC from the skin. It is concluded that the depression of normal immune function in the skin after exposure to erythemal doses of UV‐B radiation is associated with changes in the migration patterns of epidermal dendritic cells to local lymph nodes.

Abstract:The eye requires the ability to focus images near and far and throughout evolution numerous mechanisms have developed to allow this accommodation. From primitive organisms which use a small pupil to effect pinhole camera optics without a lens through more complex eyes with a lens that is moved antero-posteriorly along the visual axis or the shape of which is changed, the eye has engineered numerous accommodative mechanisms. Human inventors have developed cameras with remarkable accommodative abilities but none match the remarkable focussing abilities of the four-eyed fish Anableps or the cormorant which similarly manages to focus above and below water, to give just two examples from the animal kingdom, perfectly adapted to their environments and behaviours.

Abstract:Vision is a complex sensory system that requires coordination among cellular and morphological traits, and it remains unclear how functional relationships among traits interact with ecological selective pressures to shape the evolution of vision. Many species have specialized high visual acuity regions in the retina defined by patterns of ganglion cell density, which may evolve in response to ecological conditions. For example, ganglion cell density can increase radially towards the center of the retina to form an area centralis, which is thought to improve acuity towards the center of the visual field in predators. Another example is the horizontal streak, where ganglion cells are dense across the center of the retina, which is thought to be beneficial in horizon-dominated habitats. At the morphological level, many have proposed that predation selects for high orbit convergence angles, or forward-facing eyes. We tested these hypotheses in a phylogenetic framework across eutherian mammals and only found support for the association between the horizontal streak and horizon-dominated habitats. We also tested if retinal specializations evolve in response to orbit convergence angles. We found that horizontal streaks were associated with side-facing eyes, which may both facilitate panoramic vision. Previous studies observed that some species with side-facing eyes have an area centralis shifted towards the temporal side of the retina, such that the high acuity region would project forward, but this relationship had not been tested quantitatively. We found that the temporal distance of the area centralis from the center of the retina was inversely correlated with orbit convergence, as predicted. Our work shows a strong relationship between orbit convergence and retinal specializations. We find support that both visual ecology and functional interactions among traits play important roles in the evolution of some ocular traits across mammals.
