Abstract:Soil in high latitude and altitude cold regions contains over half of soil organic carbon (SOC) globally, so the decomposition of these SOCs under climate warming could release huge amounts of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, amplifying climate warming. However, it is still unclear how the SOC storages will change when the ecosystem reaches the final and stable stage (i.e., the climax) under long-term warming. This is mainly because the turnover times of SOC in cold regions exceeds hundreds or even thousands of years, much longer than the periods of simulated warming experiments. Herein we used natural geothermal warming gradients in a Tibetan alpine grassland to determine SOC changes and underlying plant and microbial mechanisms at the potential climax. SOC concentrations were significantly decreased by 21.4%-30.6% under high-level soil warming (+4 similar to+6 degrees C), but remained unchanged under low-level soil warming (+2 degrees C). The losses of SOC were primarily from mineral-associated organic carbon, rather than unprotected particulate organic carbon. The shifts of microbial communities and associated decline of microbial carbon use efficiency, rather than plant-driven carbon fluxes, substantially contributed to the SOC changes. This observed SOC losses at the climax of alpine grassland by high-level warming provide strong empirical support for the positive soil carbon-climate feedback in cold regions, which could not be concluded from short-term experiments or only based on ecosystem carbon fluxes alone. The divergent responses of SOC to different degrees of warming suggest that models must account for these heterogeneous carbon dynamics for projecting future climate warming scenarios.

Abstract:As global temperatures continue to rise, a key uncertainty of terrestrial carbon (C)–climate feedback is the rate of C loss upon abrupt permafrost thaw. This type of thawing—termed thermokarst—may in turn accelerate or dampen the response of microbial degradation of soil organic matter and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) release to climate warming. However, such impacts have not yet been explored in experimental studies. Here, by experimentally warming three thermo-erosion gullies in an upland thermokarst site combined with incubating soils from five additional thermokarst-impacted sites on the Tibetan Plateau, we investigate how warming responses of soil CO 2 release would change upon upland thermokarst formation. Our results show that warming-induced increase in soil CO 2 release is ~5.5 times higher in thermokarst features than the adjacent non-thermokarst landforms. This larger warming response is associated with the lower substrate quality and higher abundance of microbial functional genes for recalcitrant C degradation in thermokarst-affected soils. Taken together, our study provides experimental evidence that warming-associated soil CO 2 loss becomes stronger upon abrupt permafrost thaw, which could exacerbate the positive soil C–climate feedback in permafrost-affected regions.

Abstract:Climate warming has led to glacier retreat worldwide. Studies on the taxonomy and functions of glacier microbiomes help us better predict their response to glacier melting. Here, we used shotgun metagenomic sequencing to study the microbial functional potential in different cryospheric habitats, i.e. surface snow, supraglacial and subglacial sediments, subglacial ice, proglacial stream water and recently deglaciated soils. The functional gene structure varied greatly among habitats, especially for snow, which differed significantly from all other habitats. Differential abundance analysis revealed that genes related to stress responses (e.g. chaperones) were enriched in ice habitat, supporting the fact that glaciers are a harsh environment for microbes. The microbial metabolic capabilities related to carbon and nitrogen cycling vary among cryospheric habitats. Genes related to auxiliary activities were overrepresented in the subglacial sediment, suggesting a higher genetic potential for the degradation of recalcitrant carbon (e.g., lignin). As for nitrogen cycling, genes related to nitrogen fixation were more abundant in barren proglacial soils, possibly due to the presence of Cyanobacteriota in this habitat. Our results deepen our understanding of microbial processes in glacial ecosystems, which are vulnerable to ongoing global warming, and they have implications for downstream ecosystems.

Abstract:Soil microbial communities are extremely complex, being composed of thousands of low-abundance species (<0.1% of total). How such complex communities respond to natural or human-induced fluctuations, including major perturbations such as global climate change, remains poorly understood, severely limiting our predictive ability for soil ecosystem functioning and resilience. In this study, we compared 12 whole-community shotgun metagenomic data sets from a grassland soil in the Midwestern United States, half representing soil that had undergone infrared warming by 2 degrees C for 10 years, which simulated the effects of climate change, and the other half representing the adjacent soil that received no warming and thus, served as controls. Our analyses revealed that the heated communities showed significant shifts in composition and predicted metabolism, and these shifts were community wide as opposed to being attributable to a few taxa. Key metabolic pathways related to carbon turnover, such as cellulose degradation (similar to 13%) and CO2 production (similar to 10%), and to nitrogen cycling, including denitrification (similar to 12%), were enriched under warming, which was consistent with independent physicochemical measurements. These community shifts were interlinked, in part, with higher primary productivity of the aboveground plant communities stimulated by warming, revealing that most of the additional, plant-derived soil carbon was likely respired by microbial activity. Warming also enriched for a higher abundance of sporulation genes and genomes with higher G+C content. Collectively, our results indicate that microbial communities of temperate grassland soils play important roles in mediating feedback responses to climate change and advance the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of community adaptation to environmental perturbations.
Glacier melting promotes methane emission via increased methanogenic activity in the foreland alpine meadow

Abstract:Annual glacier melting alters hydrothermal conditions of the foreland alpine meadows, and causes significant fluctuations in methane (CH4) flux. Previously we found that Tibetan glacier foreland alpine meadow shifts to CH4 source from sink during the melting season, but the potential mechanisms remain unclear. This study, via combination of in-situ measurement of seasonal CH4 flux and survey of microbial species that may involve in CH4 metabolism, explores the causes of glacier melting on CH4 flux in a glacier foreland alpine meadow on Tibetan Plateau. We determined a pronounced CH4 emission (13.95 μg·m-2·h-1) in August (melting season) but CH4 uptake in June (-3.76 μg·m-2·h-1) and October (-17.77 μg·m-2·h-1), and 1.4-fold higher soil moisture in August than the other two months. This showed a direct correlation of CH4 flux with glacier melting increased soil water. Additionally, glacier melting caused more CH4 fluxes increase in hollows than in hummocks. Amplicon sequencing determined 126-fold higher abundance of mcrA, the methanogenic marker gene, in August than in June and October, and a higher relative abundance of a fungal phylum Mortierellomycota and syntrophic bacteria that convert the fatty acids, the degradation intermediates of organic complexes to CO2 and acetate, the methanogenic substrates like in August. However, no seasonal variation of pmoA, the marker gene of aerobic methanotrophs, was observed. It appears that glacier melting promotes the CH4 producing but not the consuming microorganisms, thus leading to increased CH4 emission. The findings of this work indicate that global warming resulted glacier melting would increase global CH4 emissions, and in turn worsens global warming, so an alarming positive feedback loop.

Abstract:Climate warming is a pressing global issue with substantial impacts on soil health and function. However, the influence of environmental context on the responses of soil microorganisms to warming remains largely elusive, particularly in alpine ecosystems. This study examined the responses of the soil microbiome to in situ experimental warming across three elevations (3850 m, 4100 m, and 4250 m) in the meadow of Gongga Mountain, eastern Tibetan Plateau. Our findings demonstrate that soil microbial diversity is highly resilient to warming, with significant impacts observed only at specific elevations. Furthermore, the influence of warming on the composition of the soil microbial community is also elevation-dependent, underscoring the importance of local environmental context in shaping microbial evolution in alpine soils under climate warming. Notably, we identified soil moisture at 3850 m and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio at 4250 m as indirect predictors regulating the responses of microbial diversity to warming at specific elevations. These findings underscore the paramount importance of considering pre-existing environmental conditions in predicting the response of alpine soil microbiomes to climate warming. Our study provides novel insights into the intricate interactions between climate warming, soil microbiome, and environmental context in alpine ecosystems, illuminating the complex mechanisms governing soil microbial ecology in these fragile and sensitive environments.
Responses of Soil Microbial Communities to Experimental Warming in Alpine Grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Abstract:Global surface temperature is predicted to increase by at least 1.5°C by the end of this century. However, the response of soil microbial communities to global warming is still poorly understood, especially in high-elevation grasslands. We therefore conducted an experiment on three types of alpine grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to study the effect of experimental warming on abundance and composition of soil microbial communities at 0-10 and 10-20 cm depths. Plots were passively warmed for 3 years using open-top chambers and compared to adjacent control plots at ambient temperature. Soil microbial communities were assessed using phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. We found that 3 years of experimental warming consistently and significantly increased microbial biomass at the 0-10 cm soil depth of alpine swamp meadow (ASM) and alpine steppe (AS) grasslands, and at both the 0-10 and 10-20 cm soil depths of alpine meadow (AM) grasslands, due primarily to the changes in soil temperature, moisture, and plant coverage. Soil microbial community composition was also significantly affected by warming at the 0-10 cm soil depth of ASM and AM and at the 10-20 cm soil depth of AM. Warming significantly decreased the ratio of fungi to bacteria and thus induced a community shift towards bacteria at the 0-10 cm soil depth of ASM and AM. While the ratio of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to saprotrophic fungi (AMF/SF) was significantly decreased by warming at the 0-10 cm soil depth of ASM, it was increased at the 0-10 cm soil depth of AM. These results indicate that warming had a strong influence on soil microbial communities in the studied high-elevation grasslands and that the effect was dependent on grassland type.

Abstract:High altitude alpine grasslands in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) contain high soil organic C (SOC) stocks that are extremely vulnerable to climate warming. Microbial residues are increasingly recognized as a major source of SOC, however, how climate warming affects this component of SOC in this region remains largely unknown. In this study, we examined the response of microbial residues to a 3-year experimental warming and the degree to which they contributed to SOC storage in two Tibetan ecosystems—alpine steppe (AS) and swamp meadow (SM). The number of microbial residues was indicated by amino sugar analysis. Our results revealed that warming yielded divergent microbial residue accumulation that significantly altered their contribution to SOC storage in the two alpine grasslands. Warming increased microbial residue abundance by approximately 17.6% across 0 to 20 cm depth in SM soils, while causing a significant decline (about 6.2%) in AS soils. The higher microbial residue accumulation in SM could lessen potential positive feedbacks from climate warming, while the decrease in microbial residues in AS may indicate greater loss of microbial-derived C inputs in warmed soils. Moreover, we found that warming selectively increased fungal residues as compared with bacterial despite inconsistent responses to warming in the two grasslands. These changes were accompanied by significant shifts in fungal to bacterial residue C ratios and their contribution to SOC pool, indicating an alteration of SOC composition and stability in alpine grassland ecosystems. These findings demonstrate that a microbial-derived C feedback to climate change is ecosystem-specific that alters the direction and magnitude of the microbial community.

Abstract:Northern-latitude tundra soils harbor substantial carbon (C) stocks that are highly susceptible to microbial degradation with rising global temperatures. Understanding the magnitude and direction (e.g., C release or sequestration) of the microbial responses to warming is necessary to accurately model climate change. In this study, Alaskan tundra soils were subjected to experimental in situ warming by ∼1.1 °C above ambient temperature, and the microbial communities were evaluated using metagenomics after 4.5 years, at 2 depths: 15 to 25 cm (active layer at outset of the experiment) and 45 to 55 cm (transition zone at the permafrost/active layer boundary at the outset of the experiment). In contrast to small or insignificant shifts after 1.5 years of warming, 4.5 years of warming resulted in significant changes to the abundances of functional traits and the corresponding taxa relative to control plots (no warming), and microbial shifts differed qualitatively between the two soil depths. At 15 to 25 cm, increased abundances of carbohydrate utilization genes were observed that correlated with (increased) measured ecosystem carbon respiration. At the 45- to 55-cm layer, increased methanogenesis potential was observed, which corresponded with a 3-fold increase in abundance of a single archaeal clade of the Methanosarcinales order, increased annual thaw duration (45.3 vs. 79.3 days), and increased CH4 emissions. Collectively, these data demonstrate that the microbial responses to warming in tundra soil are rapid and markedly different between the 2 critical soil layers evaluated, and identify potential biomarkers for the corresponding microbial processes that could be important in modeling.

Abstract:Exploring the feedback of the soil microbial community and associated processes to global warming represents a major global challenge. To date, the focus has been placed on the direct effects of warming on soil microbial communities, overlooking how concurrent changes in plant communities may mediate these effects. Additionally, few studies have examined long-term effects of warming in more than one environmental context. In the present study, we conducted a long-term simulated warming experiment to investigate how changes to the plant community within two different environmental contexts affect the responses of soil microorganisms and their respiration to warming. We analyzed the abundance, diversity, and community composition of plants and soil microbes, in addition to soil microbial interaction networks and soil microbial respiration, in two typical ecosystems of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Following long-term warming, the soil microbial composition, structure, and interactions changed, and the shifts depended on the aboveground plant type. Specifically, the co-occurring networks containing different microbial communities tended to be more complex in a shrubland than in a grassland after warming, leading to higher carbon use efficiency. Additionally, long-term warming changed the structure of soil microbial communities, increasing the relative abundances of oligotrophic taxa in the shrubland but not in the grassland. The shifts in community structure and interaction patterns could be explained by vegetation community attributes, highlighting the strong effect of plants on soil microbial responses. These plant-mediated effects on community structure and interactions subsequently could explain changes in soil microbial respiration rates. Microbial respiration showed a positive response to elevated temperature in the grassland but no response to temperature in the shrubland. These results indicate that interactions between soil microbial communities and plant communities determine how soil microbes respond to global warming. Therefore, future research on soil microbial community composition and associated carbon feedbacks to the climate change should include plant-mediated effects, which can provide a scientific basis for effectively mitigating global warming.

Abstract:Release of carbon previously locked in permafrost is a potentially important positive climate feedback. Now metagenomics reveal the vulnerability of active-layer soil carbon to warming-induced microbial decomposition in Alaskan tundra. Microbial decomposition of soil carbon in high-latitude tundra underlain with permafrost is one of the most important, but poorly understood, potential positive feedbacks of greenhouse gas emissions from terrestrial ecosystems into the atmosphere in a warmer world1,2,3,4. Using integrated metagenomic technologies, we showed that the microbial functional community structure in the active layer of tundra soil was significantly altered after only 1.5 years of warming, a rapid response demonstrating the high sensitivity of this ecosystem to warming. The abundances of microbial functional genes involved in both aerobic and anaerobic carbon decomposition were also markedly increased by this short-term warming. Consistent with this, ecosystem respiration (Reco) increased up to 38%. In addition, warming enhanced genes involved in nutrient cycling, which very likely contributed to an observed increase (30%) in gross primary productivity (GPP). However, the GPP increase did not offset the extra Reco, resulting in significantly more net carbon loss in warmed plots compared with control plots. Altogether, our results demonstrate the vulnerability of active-layer soil carbon in this permafrost-based tundra ecosystem to climate warming and the importance of microbial communities in mediating such vulnerability.

Abstract:Climate change is likely to alter the relative abundances of plant functional groups and the interactions between plants and soil microbes that maintain alpine meadow ecosystems. However, little is known about how warming-induced alterations to aboveground biomass (AGB) affect soil nutrients and microbial communities. We investigated plant community characteristics in 2002–2009 and analyzed soil properties and the soil microbial community in 2007–2009 to study the effects of warming in Qinghai Province, China. Sampling involved the use of warmed open top chambers, the monitoring of plant community characteristics, the quantification of total and available amounts of soil nutrients, and the evaluation of microbial community composition using phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. Experimental warming initially significantly increased the number of plant functional groups and plant community AGB; however, plant community diversity and species richness decreased. Nevertheless, all these variables stabilized over time. Fungal and bacterial abundance, total nitrogen, available nitrogen and soil organic matter increased with warming, while microbial PLFAs decreased. These findings demonstrated that climate change drivers and their interactions may cause changes in soil nutrients and the abundance and content of soil microbial PLFAs. Elevated temperature has strong effects on aboveground grass biomass. Surface conditions and disturbance affect the soil microbial communities of deep soil layers.

Abstract:Global climate warming has led to the deepening of the active layer of permafrost on the Tibetan Plateau, further triggering thermal subsidence phenomena, which have profound effects on the carbon cycle of regional ecosystems. This study conducted warming (W) and thermal subsidence (RR) control experiments using an Open-Top Chamber (OTC) device in the river source wetlands of the Qinghai Lake basin. The aim was to assess the impacts of warming and thermal subsidence on soil temperature, volumetric water content, biomass, microbial diversity, and soil respiration (both autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration). The results indicate that warming significantly increased soil temperature, especially during the colder seasons, and thermal subsidence treatment further exacerbated this effect. Soil volumetric water content significantly decreased under thermal subsidence, with the RRW treatment having the most pronounced impact on moisture. Additionally, a microbial diversity analysis revealed that warming promoted bacterial richness in the surface soil, while thermal subsidence suppressed fungal community diversity. Soil respiration rates exhibited a unimodal curve during the growing season. Warming treatment significantly reduced autotrophic respiration rates, while thermal subsidence inhibited heterotrophic respiration. Further analysis indicated that under thermal subsidence treatment, soil respiration was most sensitive to temperature changes, with a Q10 value reaching 7.39, reflecting a strong response to climate warming. In summary, this study provides new scientific evidence for understanding the response mechanisms of soil carbon cycling in Tibetan Plateau wetlands to climate warming.

Abstract:As climate cooling is increasingly regarded as important natural variability of long-term global warming trends, there is a resurging interest in understanding its impact on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Here, we report a soil transplant experiment from lower to higher elevations in a Tibetan alpine grassland to simulate the impact of cooling on ecosystem community structure and function. Three years of cooling resulted in reduced plant productivity and microbial functional potential (for example, carbon respiration and nutrient cycling). Microbial genetic markers associated with chemically recalcitrant carbon decomposition remained unchanged despite a decrease in genes associated with chemically labile carbon decomposition. As a consequence, cooling-associated changes correlated with a decrease in soil organic carbon (SOC). Extrapolation of these results suggests that for every 1 °C decrease in annual average air temperature, 0.1 Pg (0.3%) of SOC would be lost from the Tibetan plateau. These results demonstrate that microbial feedbacks to cooling have the potential to differentially impact chemically labile and recalcitrant carbon turnover, which could lead to strong, adverse consequences on soil C storage. Our findings are alarming, considering the frequency of short-term cooling and its scale to disrupt ecosystems and biogeochemical cycling.

Abstract:Over the past four decades, the patch clamp technique and nicotinic ACh (nACh) receptors have established an enduring partnership. Like all good partnerships, each partner has proven significant in its own right, while their union has spurred innumerable advances in life science research. A member and prototype of the superfamily of pentameric ligand‐gated ion channels, the nACh receptor is a chemo‐electric transducer, binding ACh released from nerves and rapidly opening its channel to cation flow to elicit cellular excitation. A subject of a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the patch clamp technique provides unprecedented resolution of currents through single ion channels in their native cellular environments. Here, focusing on muscle and α7 nACh receptors, we describe the extraordinary contribution of the patch clamp technique towards understanding how they activate in response to neurotransmitter, how subtle structural and mechanistic differences among nACh receptor subtypes translate into significant physiological differences, and how nACh receptors are being exploited as therapeutic drug targets.
Microbial Metabolic Response to Winter Warming Stabilizes Soil Carbon

Abstract:Current consensus on global climate change predicts warming trends with more pronounced temperature changes in winter than summer in the Northern Hemisphere at high latitudes. Moderate increases in soil temperature are generally related to faster rates of soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition in Northern ecosystems, but there is evidence that SOC stocks have remained remarkably stable or even increased on the Tibetan Plateau under these conditions. This intriguing observation points to altered soil microbial mediation of carbon-cycling feedbacks in this region that might be related to seasonal warming. This study investigated the unexplained SOC stabilization observed on the Tibetan Plateau by quantifying microbial responses to experimental seasonal warming in a typical alpine meadow. Ecosystem respiration was reduced by 17%-38% under winter warming compared with year-round warming or no warming and coincided with decreased abundances of fungi and functional genes that control labile and stable organic carbon decomposition. Compared with year-round warming, winter warming slowed macroaggregate turnover rates by 1.6 times, increased fine intra-aggregate particulate organic matter content by 75%, and increased carbon stabilized in microaggregates within stable macroaggregates by 56%. Larger bacterial "necromass" (amino sugars) concentrations in soil under winter warming coincided with a 12% increase in carboxyl-C. These results indicate the enhanced physical preservation of SOC under winter warming and emphasize the role of soil microorganisms in aggregate life cycles. In summary, the divergent responses of SOC persistence in soils exposed to winter warming compared to year-round warming are explained by the slowing of microbial decomposition but increasing physical protection of microbially derived organic compounds. Consequently, the soil microbial response to winter warming on the Tibetan Plateau may cause negative feedbacks to global climate change and should be considered in Earth system models.

Abstract:Recent studies found that the largest uncertainties in the response of the terrestrial carbon cycle to climate change might come from changes in soil moisture under the elevation of temperature. Warming-induced change in soil moisture and its level of influence on terrestrial ecosystems are mostly determined by climate, soil, and vegetation type and their sensitivity to temperature and moisture. Here, we present the results from a warming experiment of an alpine ecosystem conducted in the permafrost region of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau using infrared heaters. Our results show that 3 years of warming treatments significantly elevated soil temperature at 0-100 cm depth, decreased soil moisture at 10 cm depth, and increased soil moisture at 40-100 cm depth. In contrast to the findings of previous research, experimental warming did not significantly affect NH 4 (+)-N, NO 3 (-)-N, and heterotrophic respiration, but stimulated the growth of plants and significantly increased root biomass at 30-50 cm depth. This led to increased soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, and liable carbon at 30-50 cm depth, and increased autotrophic respiration of plants. Analysis shows that experimental warming influenced deeper root production via redistributed soil moisture, which favors the accumulation of belowground carbon, but did not significantly affected the decomposition of soil organic carbon. Our findings suggest that future climate change studies need to take greater consideration of changes in the hydrological cycle and the local ecosystem characteristics. The results of our study will aid in understanding the response of terrestrial ecosystems to climate change and provide the regional case for global ecosystem models.

Abstract:Understanding the alterations in soil microbial communities in response to climate warming and their controls over soil carbon (C) processes is crucial for projecting permafrost C-climate feedback. However, previous studies have mainly focused on microorganism-mediated soil C release, and little is known about whether and how climate warming affects microbial anabolism and the subsequent C input in permafrost regions. Here, based on a more than half-decade of in situ warming experiment, we show that compared with ambient control, warming significantly reduces microbial C use efficiency and enhances microbial network complexity, which promotes soil heterotrophic respiration. Meanwhile, microbial necromass markedly accumulates under warming likely due to preferential microbial decomposition of plant-derived C, further leading to the increase in mineral-associated organic C. Altogether, these results demonstrate dual roles of microbes in affecting soil C release and stabilization, implying that permafrost C-climate feedback would weaken over time with dampened response of microbial respiration and increased proportion of stable C pool.

Abstract:With global warming, glaciers in the high mountains of China are retreating rapidly. However, few data have been reported on whether greenhouse gases from these glaciers are released into the atmosphere or absorbed by glacial meltwater. In this study, we collected meltwater and ice samples from Laohugou Glacier No. 12 in western China and measured CH4 and CO2 concentrations. Meltwater from the glacier terminus was continually sampled between 3 and 5 August 2020 to measure CH4 and CO2 concentrations. The results demonstrated that meltwater is a source of CH4 because the average saturations are over 100%. It could be concluded that CH4 in the atmosphere can be released by glacial meltwater. However, the CO2 saturations are various, and CO2 fluxes exhibit positive (released CO2) or negative (absorbed CO2) values because the water and atmospheric conditions are variable. More importantly, the CH4 and CO2 concentrations were higher in meltwater samples from the glacier terminus than in samples from the surface ice (including an ice core) and a surface stream. Although the meltwater effect from the upper part of the glacier cannot be excluded, we speculated that subglacial drainage systems with an anaerobic environment may represent the CH4 source, but it needs to be further investigated in the future. However, high mountain glaciers are currently ignored in global carbon budgets, and the increased melting of glaciers with global warming may accelerate the absorption of much more CO2 and lead to the release of CH4.

Abstract:<p>Soil microbial communities regulate soil carbon feedbacks to climate warming through microbial respiration (i.e., metabolic rate). A thorough understanding of the responses of composition, biomass, and metabolic rate of soil microbial community to warming is crucial to predict soil carbon stocks in a future warmer climate. Therefore, we conducted a field manipulative experiment in a semiarid grassland on the Loess Plateau of China to evaluate the responses of the soil microbial community to increased temperature from April 2015 to December 2017. Soil temperature was 2.0°C higher relative to the ambient when open‐top chambers (OTCs) were used. Warming did not affect microbial biomass or the composition of microbial functional groups. However, warming significantly decreased microbial respiration, directly resulting from soil pH decrease driven by the comediation of aboveground biomass increase, inorganic nitrogen increase, and moisture decrease. These findings highlight that the soil microbial community structure of semiarid grasslands resisted the short‐term warming by 2°C, although its metabolic rate declined.</p>
