Abstract:Several studies have reported the better auditory performance of early-blind subjects over sighted subjects. However, few studies have compared the auditory functions of both hemispheres or evaluated interhemispheric transfer and binaural integration in blind individuals. Therefore, we evaluated whether there are differences in dichotic listening, auditory temporal sequencing ability, or speech perception in noise (all of which have been used to diagnose central auditory processing disorder) between early-blind subjects and sighted subjects. The study included 23 early-blind subjects and 22 age-matched sighted subjects. In the dichotic listening test (three-digit pair), the early-blind subjects achieved higher scores than the sighted subjects in the left ear ( p = 0.003, Bonferroni's corrected α = 0.05/6 = 0.008), but not in the right ear, indicating a right ear advantage in sighted subjects ( p < 0.001) but not in early-blind subjects. In the frequency patterning test (five tones), the early-blind subjects performed better (both ears in the humming response, but the left ear only in the labeling response) than the sighted subjects ( p < 0.008, Bonferroni's corrected α = 0.05/6 = 0.008). Monosyllable perception in noise tended to be better in early-blind subjects than in sighted subjects at a signal-to-noise ratio of –8 ( p = 0.054), the results at signal-to-noise ratios of –4, 0, +4, and +8 did not differ. Acoustic change complex responses to/ba/in babble noise, recorded with electroencephalography, showed a greater N1 peak amplitude at only FC5 electrode under a signal-to-noise ratio of –8 and –4 dB in the early-blind subjects than in the sighted subjects ( p = 0.004 and p = 0.003, respectively, Bonferroni's corrected α = 0.05/5 = 0.01). The results of this study revealed early-blind subjects exhibited some advantages in dichotic listening, and temporal sequencing ability compared to those shown in sighted subjects. These advantages may be attributable to the enhanced activity of the central auditory nervous system, especially the right hemisphere function, and the transfer of auditory information between the two hemispheres.

Effects of Spectral Degradation on Attentional Modulation of Cortical Auditory Responses to Continuous Speech

Abstract:This study investigates the effect of spectral degradation on cortical speech encoding in complex auditory scenes. Young normal-hearing listeners were simultaneously presented with two speech streams and were instructed to attend to only one of them. The speech mixtures were subjected to noise-channel vocoding to preserve the temporal envelope and degrade the spectral information of speech. Each subject was tested with five spectral resolution conditions (unprocessed speech, 64-, 32-, 16-, and 8-channel vocoder conditions) and two target-to-masker ratio (TMR) conditions (3 and 0 dB). Ongoing electroencephalographic (EEG) responses and speech comprehension were measured in each spectral and TMR condition for each subject. Neural tracking of each speech stream was characterized by cross-correlating the EEG responses with the envelope of each of the simultaneous speech streams at different time lags. Results showed that spectral degradation and TMR both significantly influenced how top-down attention modulated the EEG responses to the attended and unattended speech. That is, the EEG responses to the attended and unattended speech streams differed more for the higher (unprocessed, 64 ch, and 32 ch) than the lower (16 and 8 ch) spectral resolution conditions, as well as for the higher (3 dB) than the lower TMR (0 dB) condition. The magnitude of differential neural modulation responses to the attended and unattended speech streams significantly correlated with speech comprehension scores. These results suggest that severe spectral degradation and low TMR hinder speech stream segregation, making it difficult to employ top-down attention to differentially process different speech streams.
The Impact of Spectral and Temporal Degradation on Vocoded Speech Recognition in Early-Blind Individuals

Abstract:This study compared the impact of spectral and temporal degradation on vocoded speech recognition between early-blind and sighted subjects. The participants included 25 early-blind subjects (30.32 ± 4.88 years; male:female, 14:11) and 25 age- and sex-matched sighted subjects. Tests included monosyllable recognition in noise at various signal-to-noise ratios (–18 to –4 dB), matrix sentence-in-noise recognition, and vocoded speech recognition with different numbers of channels (4, 8, 16, and 32) and temporal envelope cutoff frequencies (50 vs 500 Hz). Cortical-evoked potentials (N2 and P3b) were measured in response to spectrally and temporally degraded stimuli. The early-blind subjects displayed superior monosyllable and sentence recognition than sighted subjects (all p < 0.01). In the vocoded speech recognition test, a three-way repeated-measure analysis of variance (two groups x four channels x two cutoff frequencies) revealed significant main effects of group, channel, and cutoff frequency (all p < 0.001). Early-blind subjects showed increased sensitivity to spectral degradation for speech recognition, evident in the significant interaction between group and channel ( p = 0.007). N2 responses in early-blind subjects exhibited shorter latency and greater amplitude in the 8-channel ( p = 0.022 and 0.034, respectively) and shorter latency in the 16-channel ( p = 0.049) compared with sighted subjects. In conclusion, early-blind subjects demonstrated speech recognition advantages over sighted subjects, even in the presence of spectral and temporal degradation. Spectral degradation had a greater impact on speech recognition in early-blind subjects, while the effect of temporal degradation was similar in both groups.

Abstract:Objective: This study investigates how spatial working memory skills, and the processing and retrieval of distal auditory spatial information are influenced by visual experience. Method: We developed an experimental paradigm using an acoustic simulation. The performance of congenitally blind and sighted participants (n = 9 per group) was compared when recalling sequences of spatialised auditory items in the same or reverse order of presentation. Two experimental conditions based on stimuli features were tested: non-semantic and semantic. Results: Blind participants had a shorter memory span in the backward than the forward order of presentation. In contrast, sighted participants did not, revealing that blindness affects spatial information processing with greater executive source involvement. Furthermore, we found that blind subjects performed worse overall than the sighted group and that the semantic information significantly improved the performance, regardless of the experimental group and the sequences' order of presentation. Conclusions: Lack of early visual experience affects the ability to encode the surrounding space. Congenital blindness influences the processing and retrieval of spatial auditory items, suggesting that visual experience plays a pivotal role in calibrating spatial memory abilities using the remaining sensory modalities. Effect of early versus late onset of partial visual loss on judgments of auditory distance

Abstract:Significance: It is important to know whether early-onset vision loss and late-onset vision loss are associated with differences in the estimation of distances of sound sources within the environment. People with vision loss rely heavily on auditory cues for path planning, safe navigation, avoiding collisions, and activities of daily living. Purpose: Loss of vision can lead to substantial changes in auditory abilities. It is unclear whether differences in sound distance estimation exist in people with early-onset partial vision loss, late-onset partial vision loss, and normal vision. We investigated distance estimates for a range of sound sources and auditory environments in groups of participants with early- or late-onset partial visual loss and sighted controls. Methods: Fifty-two participants heard static sounds with virtual distances ranging from 1.2 to 13.8 m within a simulated room. The room simulated either anechoic (no echoes) or reverberant environments. Stimuli were speech, music, or noise. Single sounds were presented, and participants reported the estimated distance of the sound source. Each participant took part in 480 trials. Results: Analysis of variance showed significant main effects of visual status (p<0.05) environment (reverberant vs. anechoic, p<0.05) and also of the stimulus (p<0.05). Significant differences (p<0.05) were shown in the estimation of distances of sound sources between early-onset visually impaired participants and sighted controls for closer distances for all conditions except the anechoic speech condition and at middle distances for all conditions except the reverberant speech and music conditions. Late-onset visually impaired participants and sighted controls showed similar performance (p>0.05). Conclusions: The findings suggest that early-onset partial vision loss results in significant changes in judged auditory distance in different environments, especially for close and middle distances. Late-onset partial visual loss has less of an impact on the ability to estimate the distance of sound sources. The findings are consistent with a theoretical framework, the perceptual restructuring hypothesis, which was recently proposed to account for the effects of vision loss on audition.

Abstract:Processing of emotional speech in the absence of visual information relies on two auditory channels: semantics and prosody. No study to date has investigated how blindness impacts this process. Two theories, Perceptual Deficit, and Sensory Compensation, yiled different expectations about the role of visual experience (or its lack thereof) in processing emotional speech. To test the effect of vision and early visual experience on processing of emotional speech, we compared individuals with congenital blindness (CB, n = 17), individuals with late blindness (LB, n = 15), and sighted controls (SC, n = 21) on identification and selective-attention of semantic and prosodic spoken-emotions. Results showed that individuals with blindness performed at least as well as SC, supporting Sensory Compensation and the role of cortical reorganisation. Individuals with LB outperformed individuals with CB, in accordance with Perceptual Deficit, supporting the role of early visual experience. The LB advantage was moderated by executive functions (working-memory). Namely, the advantage was erased for individuals with CB who showed higher levels of executive functions. Results suggest that vision is not necessary for processing of emotional speech, but early visual experience could improve it. The findings support a combination of the two aforementioned theories and reject a dichotomous view of deficiencies/enhancements of blindness.

Abstract:Background Children with visual challenges rely on their hearing ability to accomplish daily tasks more efficiently. Many investigations show changes in the auditory pathway in children and adults with early blindness. It can be hypothesized that the auditory processing abilities of children with congenital blindness will be superior to those of typically developing children without any visual challenges. Purpose The current study was designed to compare some of the auditory processing abilities of children with congenital blindness and typically developing children who do not have any visual challenges. Specifically, the study compared the perception of speech in noise, temporal patterning ability, binaural integration ability as well as auditory memory and sequencing abilities of children in two groups. Research Design It was a prospective cross-sectional study comparing two groups. Study Sample A total of 160 children, 80 typically developing children without any visual challenges (reference group) and 80 children with congenital blindness, in the age range of 7 to 11 years, participated in the study. Data collection and analysis Pitch pattern test (PPT), perception of speech perception in noise test in Marathi (PSIN-M), dichotic digit test in Marathi (DDT-M), and auditory memory and sequencing test in Marathi (AMST-M) were administered. Independent sample T test and Mann Whitney U test were used to compare the performance of the two groups on these tests. Results Children with congenital blindness showed significantly better scores on PPT, PSIN-M, and DDT-M as compared to children in the reference group in all the age groups. A clear trend was not observed on DDT-M Conclusion It can be concluded that children with congenital blindness have better auditory processing, auditory memory, and sequencing abilities compared to typically developing children without any visual challenges.

Abstract:Background: Enhanced visual attention is one of the major documented effects in auditory deprivation. However, in parallel, it has been shown that the congenitally deaf show deficits in their temporal processing. Aim: In this study, we aimed to study the parameters of visual attention. Materials and Methods: The speed of processing of divided attention (using the symbol digit modality test [SDMT]) and the central attention with attentional blink (AB) using a commercially available App, the BrainBaseline App. We tested these parameters of visual attention in students who are congenitally hearing impaired and those with normal hearing. Results: The measure of visual attention (error scores) using the SDMT did not show any significant differences between the congenitally hearing impaired and the students with normal hearing. However, we report significant differences in the processing speeds of divided attention and the error rates in the AB test between the congenitally hearing impaired and the normal with the hearing impaired having slower speeds of processing but making less errors in AB test. Conclusion: This finding probably indicates the redistribution or allocation of available brain resources as a result of sensory deprivation.
Sensitive and critical periods in visual sensory deprivation

Abstract:While the demonstration of crossmodal plasticity is well established in congenital and early blind individuals, great debate still surrounds whether those who acquire blindness later in life can also benefit from such compensatory changes. No proper consensus has been reached despite the fact that a proper understanding of the developmental time course of these changes, and whether their occurrence is limited to-or within-specific time windows, is crucial to our understanding of the crossmodal phenomena. An extensive review of the literature reveals that while the majority of investigations to date have examined the crossmodal plasticity available to late blind individuals in quantitative terms, recent findings rather suggest that this reorganization also likely changes qualitatively compared to what is observed in early blindness. This obviously could have significant repercussions not only for the training and rehabilitation of blind individuals, but for the development of appropriate neuroprostheses designed to aid and potentially restore vision. Important parallels will also be drawn with the current state of research on deafness, which is particularly relevant given in the development of successful neuroprostheses (e.g., cochlear implants) for providing auditory input to the central nervous system otherwise aurally deafferented. Lastly, this paper will address important inconsistencies across the literature concerning the definition of distinct blind groups based on the age of blindness onset, and propose several alternatives to using such a categorization.

Abstract:Visual deprivation may lead to enhanced performance in other sensory modalities. Whether this is the case in the tactile modality is controversial and may depend upon specific training and experience. We compared the performance of sighted subjects on a Braille character discrimination task to that of normal individuals blindfolded for a period of five days. Some participants in each group (blindfolded and sighted) received intensive Braille training to offset the effects of experience. Blindfolded subjects performed better than sighted subjects in the Braille discrimination task, irrespective of tactile training. For the left index finger, which had not been used in the formal Braille classes, blindfolding had no effect on performance while subjects who underwent tactile training outperformed non-stimulated participants. These results suggest that visual deprivation speeds up Braille learning and may be associated with behaviorally relevant neuroplastic changes.

Abstract:In early (EB) and late blind (LB) children, vision deprivation produces cross-modal plasticity in the visual cortex. The progression of structural- and tract-based spatial statistics changes in the visual cortex in EB and LB, as well as their impact on global cognition, have yet to be investigated. The purpose of this study was to determine the cortical thickness (CT), gyrification index (GI), and white matter (WM) integrity in EB and LB children, as well as their association to the duration of blindness and education. Structural and diffusion tensor imaging data were acquired in a 3T magnetic resonance imaging in EB and LB children (n = 40 each) and 30 sighted controls (SCs) and processed using CAT12 toolbox and FSL software. Two sample t-test was used for group analyses with P < 0.05 (false discovery rate-corrected). Increased CT in visual, sensory-motor, and auditory areas, and GI in bilateral visual cortex was observed in EB children. In LB children, the right visual cortex, anterior-cingulate, sensorimotor, and auditory areas showed increased GI. Structural- and tract-based spatial statistics changes were observed in anterior visual pathway, thalamo-cortical, and corticospinal tracts, and were correlated with education onset and global cognition in EB children. Reduced impairment in WM, increased CT and GI and its correlation with global cognitive functions in visually impaired children suggests cross-modal plasticity due to adaptive compensatory mechanism (as compared to SCs). Reduced CT and increased FA in thalamo-cortical areas in EB suggest synaptic pruning and alteration in WM integrity. In the visual cortical pathway, higher education and the development of blindness modify the morphology of brain areas and influence the probabilistic tractography in EB rather than LB.
Psychoacoustic abilities associated with music perception in cochlear implant users

Abstract:Objectives: This study was designed to determine what acoustic elements are associated with musical perception ability in cochlear implant (CI) users and to understand how acoustic elements, which are important to good speech perception, contribute to music perception in CI users. It was hypothesized that the variability in the performance of music and speech perception may be related to differences in the sensitivity to specific acoustic features such as spectral changes or temporal modulations, or both. Design: A battery of hearing tasks was administered to 42 CI listeners. The Clinical Assessment of Music Perception was used, which evaluates complex-tone pitch-direction discrimination, melody recognition, and timbre recognition. To investigate spectral and temporal processing, spectral-ripple discrimination and Schroeder-phase discrimination abilities were evaluated. Speech perception ability in quiet and noise was also evaluated. Relationships between Clinical Assessment of Music Perception subtest scores, spectral-ripple discrimination thresholds, Schroeder-phase discrimination scores, and speech recognition scores were assessed. Results: Spectral-ripple discrimination was shown to correlate with all three aspects of music perception studied. Schroeder-phase discrimination was generally not predictive of music perception outcomes. Music perception ability was significantly correlated with speech perception ability. Nearly half of the variance in melody and timbre recognition was predicted jointly by spectral-ripple and pitch-direction discrimination thresholds. Similar results were observed on speech recognition as well. Conclusions: This study suggests that spectral-ripple discrimination is significantly associated with music perception in CI users. A previous report showed that spectral-ripple discrimination is significantly correlated with speech recognition in quiet and in noise. This study also showed that speech recognition and music perception are also related to one another. Spectral-ripple discrimination ability seems to reflect a wide range of hearing abilities in CI users. The results suggest that materially improving spectral resolution could provide significant benefits in music and speech perception outcomes in CI users.
Analysis of interactions with mitochondrial mRNA using mutant forms of yeast NAD(+)-specific isocitrate dehydrogenase.

Abstract:Yeast NAD(+)-specific isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) is an allosterically regulated tricarboxylic acid cycle enzyme that has been shown to bind specifically and with high affinity to 5'-untranslated regions of yeast mitochondrial mRNAs. The absence of IDH has been shown to result in reduced expression of mitochondrial translation products, leading to the suggestion that this macromolecular interaction may contribute to regulating rates of translation. The interaction with mitochondrial mRNAs also produces a dramatic inhibition of IDH catalytic activity that is specifically alleviated by AMP, the primary allosteric activator of IDH. Using mutant forms of IDH with defined catalytic or regulatory kinetic defects, we found that residue changes altering ligand binding in the catalytic site reduce the inhibitory effect of a transcript from the mitochondrial COX2 mRNA. In contrast, residue changes altering binding of allosteric regulators do not prevent inhibition by the COX2 RNA transcript but do prevent alleviation of inhibition by AMP. Results obtained using surface plasmon resonance methods suggest that the mRNA transcript may bind at the active site of IDH. Also, the presence of AMP has little effect on overall affinity but renders the binding of mRNA ineffective in catalytic inhibition of IDH. Finally, by expressing mutant forms of IDH in vivo, we determined that detrimental effects on levels of mitochondrial translation products correlate with a substantial reduction in catalytic activity. However, concomitant loss of IDH and of citrate synthase eliminates these effects, suggesting that any role of IDH in mitochondrial translation is indirect.

Abstract:Fan blade loss is the most serious condition of typical extreme working conditions in turbofan engines. The transient huge unbalance force leads to the complicated and destructive vibration response of the rotor system. The paper proposed a set of safety design method for the rotor system, which ensured the engine to stop safely after the fan blade lost. The variable stiffness supporting structure at the rear of the fan was presented and its parameters were optimized through dynamic characteristics calculation. The results revealed that the vibration response of the rotor system could be suppressed during the speed reduction process. The spherical matching surface between the bearing ring and the rotation shaft could reduce the impact of the large shaft deformation, and enhanced the bearing's safety.
Alterations of Regional Spontaneous Brain Activity and Gray Matter Volume in the Blind.

Abstract:Visual deprivation can induce alterations of regional spontaneous brain activity (RSBA). However, the effects of onset age of blindness on the RSBA and the association between the alterations of RSBA and brain structure are still unclear in the blind. In this study, we performed resting-state functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging on 50 sighted controls and 91 blind subjects (20 congenitally blind, 27 early blind, and 44 late blind individuals). Compared with the sighted control, we identified increased RSBA in the blind in primary and high-level visual areas and decreased RSBA in brain regions which are ascribed to sensorimotor and salience networks. In contrast, blind subjects exhibited significantly decreased gray matter volume (GMV) in the visual areas, while they exhibited significantly increased GMV in the sensorimotor areas. Moreover, the onset age of blindness was negatively correlated with the GMV of visual areas in blind subjects, whereas it exerted complex influences on the RSBA. Finally, significant negative correlations were shown between RSBA and GMV values. Our results demonstrated system-dependent, inverse alterations in RSBA and GMV after visual deprivation. Furthermore, the onset age of blindness has different effects on the reorganizations in RSBA and GMV.
Auditory Spatial Bisection of Blind and Normally Sighted Individuals in Free Field and Virtual Acoustics

Abstract:Sound localization is an important ability in everyday life. This study investigates the influence of vision and presentation mode on auditory spatial bisection performance. Subjects were asked to identify the smaller perceived distance between three consecutive stimuli that were either presented via loudspeakers (free field) or via headphones after convolution with generic head-related impulse responses (binaural reproduction). Thirteen azimuthal sound incidence angles on a circular arc segment of ±24° at a radius of 3 m were included in three regions of space (front, rear, and laterally left). Twenty normally sighted (measured both sighted and blindfolded) and eight blind persons participated. Results showed no significant differences with respect to visual condition, but strong effects of sound direction and presentation mode. Psychometric functions were steepest in frontal space and indicated median spatial bisection thresholds of 11°–14°. Thresholds increased significantly in rear (11°–17°) and laterally left (20°–28°) space in free field. Individual pinna and torso cues, as available only in free field presentation, improved the performance of all participants compared to binaural reproduction. Especially in rear space, auditory spatial bisection thresholds were three to four times higher (i.e., poorer) using binaural reproduction than in free field. The results underline the importance of individual auditory spatial cues for spatial bisection, irrespective of access to vision, which indicates that vision may not be strictly necessary to calibrate allocentric spatial hearing.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Examine the relationship between duration of unilateral deafness and speech perception outcomes after cochlear implantation in adults with single-sided deafness.METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed articles containing individual speech perception and duration of deafness data from single-sided deaf adults. Studies were selected for detailed review and duration of deafness and speech perception outcomes were extracted, with speech scores reported as percent correct. A linear regression as a function of study and length of deafness was performed.RESULTS: A statistically significant negative effect of duration of unilateral deafness on speech perception was found, but there was substantial uncertainty regarding the strength of the effect.DISCUSSION: Existing data make it difficult to either support or reject a hard 5- or 10-year unilateral auditory deprivation limit on cochlear implant (CI) candidacy for patients with single-sided deafness. This is because the totality of available data are consistent with a very small effect, perhaps negligible in practical terms, and just as consistent with a very large effect. Regardless of effect size, the present results have important basic implications. They suggest that unilateral sound deprivation may have a deleterious effect on auditory processing even though more central parts of the auditory system have continued to receive input from a contralateral normal ear.CONCLUSIONS: Speech perception scores in SSD patients are negatively correlated with duration of deafness, but the limited amount of data from cochlear implant users with long-term single-sided deafness leads to substantial uncertainly, which in turn precludes any strong clinical recommendations. Further study of SSD CI users with long-term deafness will be necessary to generate evidence-based guidelines for implantation criteria in this population.
