Abstract:The toxicological influence and pervasive manifestation of hazardous pesticides posture adverse consequences on humans and a number of environmental matrices, directly through bioaccumulation or indirectly via the food chain. Much emphasis has been paid to reevaluating how to manage pesticide usage practices without affecting or damaging the environment due to the persistent existence of pesticide residues over acceptable levels in numerous forms. Therefore, the studies related to the creation of trustworthy techniques for pesticide monitoring are hotspot across the globe. It has been suggested that carbon dots (C-dots), which have outstanding biocompatibility strong photostability and low toxicity, could replace other materials in the construction of several optical sensors for the detection of pesticide. Based on the complex nature and health hazards of the pesticides, this manuscript comprehensively summarizes the overview of recent developments of C-dots based optical sensors for pesticide detection with special emphasis on colorimetric and photoluminescent sensors. This section is further nourished by highlighting the sensing mechanisms, structural design through integration of types of recognition elements such as, nanoparticles, enzymes, aptamers, antibodies and some of the molecularly imprinted polymers. Beyond evaluating how well these suggested optical sensors operate in practical applications, detailed discussions regarding current monitoring gaps and difficulties as well as potential future directions has also been presented. It is believed that this review would offer significant new insights for the creation of novel C-dots based pesticide monitoring systems with a large variety of applications.

Abstract:Recent advances in nanomaterial design and synthesis has resulted in robust sensing systems that display superior analytical performance. The use of nanomaterials within sensors has accelerated new routes and opportunities for the detection of analytes or target molecules. Among others, carbon-based sensors have reported biocompatibility, better sensitivity, better selectivity and lower limits of detection to reveal a wide range of organic and inorganic molecules. Carbon nanomaterials are among the most extensively studied materials because of their unique properties spanning from the high specific surface area, high carrier mobility, high electrical conductivity, flexibility, and optical transparency fostering their use in sensing applications. In this paper, a comprehensive review has been made to cover recent developments in the field of carbon-based nanomaterials for sensing applications. The review describes nanomaterials like fullerenes, carbon onions, carbon quantum dots, nanodiamonds, carbon nanotubes, and graphene. Synthesis of these nanostructures has been discussed along with their functionalization methods. The recent application of all these nanomaterials in sensing applications has been highlighted for the principal applicative field and the future prospects and possibilities have been outlined.

Abstract:In the recent decade, carbon dots have drawn immense attention and prompted intense investigation. The latest form of nanocarbon, the carbon nanodot, is attracting intensive research efforts, similar to its earlier analogues, namely, fullerene, carbon nanotube, and graphene. One outstanding feature that distinguishes carbon nanodots from other known forms of carbon materials is its water solubility owing to extensive surface functionalization (the presence of polar surface functional groups). These carbonaceous quantum dots, or carbon nanodots, have several advantages over traditional semiconductor-based quantum dots. They possess outstanding photoluminescence, fluorescence, biocompatibility, biosensing and bioimaging, photostability, feedstock sustainability, extensive surface functionalization and bio-conjugation, excellent colloidal stability, eco-friendly synthesis (from organic matter such as glucose, coffee, tea, and grass to biomass waste-derived sources), low toxicity, and cost-effectiveness. Recent advances in the synthesis and characterization of carbon dots have been received and new insight is provided. Presently known applications of carbon dots in the fields of bioimaging, drug delivery, sensing, and diagnosis were highlighted and future applications of these astounding materials are speculated.

Abstract:This review aims to analyze the current knowledge about carbon dots for application in environmental monitoring and chemical analysis. Numerous publications describing research on carbon dots confirm the very high potential of their use in many fields of science, such as chemical sensors, analytics, medicine, bioimaging, drug delivery, photocatalysis, mechanical sensors, logic gates, and applications related to safety and countermeasures. Applying carbon dots in the fast and reliable analysis of heavy metal ions and toxic chemical compounds is crucial in the face of increasing environmental pollution. The main advantages of carbon dots, compared to small molecule fluorescent probes, that determine their use in chemical analysis are the possibility of green synthesis, the ability to fluorescence, sorption properties, selectivity of analyte detection, and biocompatibility. However, the laws and mechanisms that determine the properties of carbon dots require a more detailed understanding. Thanks to thorough research into the capabilities of carbon dots, it will be possible to use their full potential. The article may be a starting point for further research on improving the properties and discovering more promising sorption and analytical applications of carbon dots. This article is a collection of current knowledge about carbon dots in the context of their use in chemical analysis and environmental protection. It may be a source of information necessary for further research on modification the properties of carbon dots and discovering their more promising analytical and sorption applications.

In this review, we will provide an update on the latest research of green carbon dots regarding their applications in cancer therapy and in the development of electrochemical sensors. Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are an emerging type of carbon nanomaterial with strong biocompatibility, distinct chemical and physical properties, and low toxicity. CDs may emit fluorescence in the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR) range, which renders them beneficial for biomedical applications. CDs are usually made from carbon precursors and can be synthesized using top-down and bottom-up methods and it can be easily functionalized using different methods. For specific cases of biomedical applications carbon dot functionalization augments the materials' characteristics. Novel functionalization techniques are still being investigated. This review will look at the benefits of functionalization to attain a high yield and various biological applications. Biomedical applications such as photodynamic and photothermal therapy, biosensing, bioimaging, and antiviral and antibacterial properties will be covered in this review. The future applications of green synthesized carbon dots will be determined in part by this review.

Abstract:Carbon dots (Cdots) have become a potential material for biosensing, drug delivery and bioimaging because of their excellent optical properties, high biocompatibility and low toxicity. Thus the preparation, properties and applications of Cdots have drawn great attention. In this review, Cdots were classified into two groups: grapheme nanodots and carbon nanodots, based on the difference in precursors and preparation methods. The synthetic methods of Cdots were summarized and their luminescence mechanism was analyzed. The applications of Cdots in biosensing, drug delivery and bioimaging were also discussed. The issues and challenges of Cdots were analyzed for their further development.

Abstract:Carbon materials based quantum dots, mainly including carbon and graphene dots, with wonderful optical, electrical and chemical properties have greatly boosted the development of advanced sensors and analytical chemistry. Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensors based on carbon and graphene dots have shown promising potential and rapid developments in recent decades and have also attained great achievements. Deep insight into the applications of carbon and graphene dots in ECL sensing platforms will benefit the design of advanced sensors in the future. In this review, we aim to give a brief overview of carbon and graphene dots with versatile roles in the fabrication of ECL sensors. A general description of the basic ECL mechanisms, main synthesis routes of carbon and graphene dots, and a series of sensing approaches for the detection of targets including metal ions, small molecules, proteins, DNA and cells will be presented. In addition, recent developments of ECL sensors made of carbon-based dots, relevant signal amplification methodologies and an outlook for the construction of highly sensitive ECL sensors based on various carbon-based dots are also discussed.

Abstract:Photocatalytic technique is considered a promising energy conversion passway to alleviate energy crisis and environmental issues. Carbon dots as emerging photocatalysts or cocatalysts with outstanding physicochemical properties are widely applied in photocatalytic hydrogen generation, CO2 reduction, nitrogen fixation, pollutant degradation or organic synthesis, favoring a sustainable lifestyle based on photocatalytic techniques in the future. Seeking clean energy as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels is the inevitable choice to realize the sustainable development of the society. Photocatalytic technique is considered a promising energy conversion approach to store the abundant solar energy into other wieldy energy carriers like chemical energy. Carbon dots, as a class of fascinating carbon nanomaterials, have already become the hotspots in numerous photoelectric researching fields and particularly drawn keen interests as metal‐free photocatalysts owing to strong UV–vis optical absorption, tunable energy‐level configuration, superior charge transfer ability, excellent physicochemical stability, facile fabrication, low toxicity, and high solubility. In this review, the classification, microstructures, general synthetic methods, optical and photoelectrical properties of carbon dots are systematically summarized. In addition, recent advances of carbon dots based photoinduced reactions including photodegradation, photocatalytic hydrogen generation, CO2 conversion, N2 fixation, and photochemical synthesis are highlighted in detail, deep insights into the roles of carbon dots in various systems combining with the photocatalytic mechanisms are provided. Finally, several critical issues remaining in photocatalysis field are also proposed.

Abstract:The development of carbon dots (CDs), either using green or chemical precursors, has inevitably led to their wide range application, from bioimaging to optoelectronic devices. The reported precursors and properties of these CDs have opened new opportunities for the future development of high-quality CDs and applications. Green precursors were classified into fruits, vegetables, flowers, leaves, seeds, stem, crop residues, fungi/bacteria species, and waste products, while the chemical precursors were classified into acid reagents and non-acid reagents. This paper quickly reviews ten years of the synthesis of CDs using green and chemical precursors. The application of CDs as sensing materials in optical sensor techniques for environmental monitoring, including the detection of heavy metal ions, phenol, pesticides, and nitroaromatic explosives, was also discussed in this review. This profound review will offer knowledge for the upcoming community of researchers interested in synthesizing high-quality CDs for various applications.

Abstract:Emerging as a potent alternative to classical metal-based semiconductor quantum dots (Qdots), carbon dots (Cdots) possess the distinctive advantages of convenient synthesis, prominent biocompatibility, colorful photoluminescence, and low cost. After almost a decade of extensive studies since their discovery, Cdots have widely been applied in bioimaging, sensing, catalysis, optoelectronics, energy conversion, etc. In this review, we first highlight the synthetic methods for Cdots in a macroscale manner. Second, we briefly discuss the fundamental mechanisms underlying the photoluminescence (PL). Third, we focus on their applications in sensing and bioimaging (including imaging-guided therapy). Some thoughts on future developments of Cdots are demonstrated as concluding remarks.

Abstract:Carbon-based quantum dots and their nanocomposites have sparked immense interest for researchers as sensors due to their attractive physico-chemical properties caused by edge effects and quantum confinement. In this review article, we have discussed the synthesis and application of nanocomposites of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and carbon quantum dots (CQDs). Different synthetic strategies for CQDs, GQDs, and their nanocomposites, are categorized as top-down and bottom-up approaches which include laser ablation, arc-discharge, chemical oxidation, ultrasonication, oxidative cleavage, microwave synthesis, thermal decomposition, solvothermal or hydrothermal method, stepwise organic synthesis, carbonization from small molecules or polymers, and impregnation. A comparison of methodologies is presented. The environmental application of nanocomposites of CQDs/GQDs and pristine quantum dots as sensors are presented in detail. Their applications envisage important domains dealing with the sensing of pollutant molecules. Recent advances and future perspective in the use of CQDs, GQDs, and their nanocomposites as sensors are also explored.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are zero-dimensional quasi-spherical nanoparticles endowed with excellent advantages including good luminescence features, photostability, low cytotoxicity, remarkable aqueous solubility, favourable biocompatibility, low risk to environment and great flexibility in surface modification. Fluorescent CDs that can selectively respond to specific inorganic/organic target molecules in environmental and biological samples are of prime significance amongst the new generation intelligent sensors due to the critical involvement of different ions/molecular species in not only human health, but also in environment processes. In this context, preparation of CDs from bioprecursors has immense significance due to the involvement of green principles, inexpensive, clean, nontoxic, easily accessible, renewable and large-scale production can be realized. This article aims at exploring different types of green raw materials including plant biomass, animal products, food items and waste materials as carbon sources for the synthesis of both undoped and doped CDs. The emphasis is given on different synthetic approaches adopted for improving the quantum yield without any chemical modification, the characterization techniques, mechanistic origin of photoluminescence and fluorescence response mechanisms involved in the sensing action towards various analytes. The significant benefits and limitations of CDs obtained from eco-friendly precursors through green approaches are summarized. Various challenges and the future prospects of these carbonaceous nanomaterials as sensors are also discussed.

Abstract:The advance of materials chemistry has influenced significantly the lifestyle of mankind. By virtue of their fascinating physicochemical nature – including ultrasmall size (<10 nm), rich functional groups, fluorescence, chemical stability, biocompatibility, and nontoxicity – carbon dots have been acclaimed as another epoch-making carbon-based nanomaterial following on from fullerene, nanotubes, and graphene. However, the field of carbon dot-based materials chemistry remains incomplete because of their wide structural diversity, meaning that much fundamental knowledge still needs to be uncovered. Herein, this review proposed several novel viewpoints in term of carbon dot-based material chemistry, including the development history, classification, design principle and applications of carbon dots-based materials. Finally, several sound prospects in this fascinating filed are also given.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are a class of emerging carbon-based nanomaterials with an average particle size of less than 10 nm. CDs have received considerable attention due to their outstanding characteristics, such as conjugated structure, excellent fluorescent properties, high electrical conductivity, exceptional biocompatibility, negligible toxicity, superior water dispersion, ease of synthesis and feasibility of surface modification. In light of these unique properties, a wide variety of potential applications of CDs have been proposed, including sensing, bioimaging, drug delivery, optoelectronics, photocatalysis, energy storage and conversion, etc. In the field of sensing, CDs are widely used as modified materials to fabricate sensors by simple drop-casting, electrodeposition and inkjet printing process. The analytical performances in electrochemical sensing and biosensing rival or surpass those of other carbon-based nanomaterials, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes. To date, the availability of a comprehensive review focused on electrochemical sensing platform based on CDs with the information on recent progress, analytical performance, and application prospects is lacking. In this review, we aim to summarize the advances in the application of CDs in electrochemical sensing platform for determining environmental contaminants (endocrine disrupting chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides and antibiotics) and biomolecules (proteins, metabolites and amino acids) over the last 5 years. Besides, the challenges and future research directions for CDs-based sensors are discussed.

Abstract:Recently, the field of nanotechnology has remarkably progressed. Nanomaterials, the backbone of nanotechnology, are at the forefront of modern science. Carbon-nanotubes (CNTs), a 1-dimensional nanostructure of carbon has remained a centre of attraction for a variety of applications and is likely to become a vast field of its own. CNTs, the rolled graphene layer offers unique properties due to its distinctive dimensions, high surface area, thermal and electronic conduction, mechanical strength etc. Carbon nanotubes, with their unique properties have made significant contributions in the fields of electronics, optics, biomedicine, energy and many more. Anchoring various moieties on the CNT surface improves its functionality and widens range of applications for CNTs. CNT functionalization offers a platform not only for the advancements in the field of materials but also motivate researchers to develop new synthetic strategies to create the materials "on demand." The studies have revealed that functionalized CNTs are promising for applications such as sensors, drug delivery, energy, electronics, catalysis etc. where efficiency and selectivity matters. This review gives an overview of CNT functionalization and discusses the applications of functionalized CNTs in various sectors. The existing challenges in CNT functionalization and the scope for the development have been discussed.

Abstract:Carbon dots/carbon nanodots/carbon quantum dots (C-Dots/CDs/CQDs) are nascent carbon-based materials in the nano family with several interesting features and characteristics. Generally, they can be defined as tiny surface-functional carbonic nano-particles with a high level and modifiable fluorescence property. These nano-structures have currently gained much prominence in the field of sensors, energy storage, light-emitting diodes, bioimaging, composite products, catalysis, and drug delivery, etc. because of their exceptional chemical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical characteristics. C-Dots can be synthesized basically by two processes i.e., the top-down process mainly including the arc-discharge method, laser ablation, chemical oxidation; and the bottom-up process that comprises of the hydrothermal method, microwave pyrolysis, electrochemical treatment, etc. Due to the incredible properties of these carbon nano-structures, it has become an interesting chapter in the field of nano-research.
