Abstract:Excited light and corresponding intrinsic fluorescence diffusion inside teeth tissue are an essential problem for light-based carious lesion detection. Based on finite element numerical analysis of diffusion equation, the photon density distribution of both excited light and autofluorescence of 2D premolar teeth model is obtained. The dependence of excited light and autofluorescence density distribution inside the teeth model on the scattering coefficient of enamel (5–25 mm−1) and dentine (100–140 mm−1) is numerically simulated and analyzed. The fitted results reveal that fluorescence intensity decreases exponentially. Optical penetration depth and fluorescence relative depth declined with the increment of scattering coefficient of enamel. And the dentine had the opposite effect. Finally, the experiment of measurement of fluorescence intensity on the teeth surface is conducted and the result is compared with the numerical computation.
Study on the normal and pathologic structures of the hard dental tissues using the scanning electron microscope.

Abstract:The recent use in biology of the Scanning Electron Microscope allows a new vision of the sample, completing the previous ones: the Optical Microscope (OM) and the Conventional Electron Microscope--CEM. The object is observed in space, in a direct way and, due to a system of variable sizes, the passage from a general image to the detailed tissue and cell study is permitted. The outer enamel surface with its perikymaties, its flaws and its changes caused by usage as well as by the internal enamel structure on the fractured area have been studied. On the occlusal surface of the decayed teeth, focal holes have been found; they resulted probably from creation disturbances due to some amelogenetic disorders that damage the ameloblast, matrix creation or its mineralization. These lacunar flaws are the favourite zones for the microbe plate accumulation and propitious to carious lesions initiation. The same clinical aspect, of profound enamel creation defects with an anfractuous crevass network aspect, having a variable expansion and depth, can be found in microscope with some healthy teeth. Regrouping in fascicles of the different prism directions can be found after structural analysis of the prismatic morphology of the parodontotic tooth enamel. An aspect of a more compact structure is thus obtained sectionally. This explains partially the increased resistance to decay of these teeth. In a comparative study of the fractioned area of some decayed and ruined temporary teeth, significant differences in prism arrangement can be found. The decayed teeth show expansions of the intraprismatic spaces, accusing reduced resistance against decay attack.

THE EFFECT OF MINIMALLY INVASIVE TECHNIQUES ON THE MICROSTRUCTURE OF THE ENAMEL IN THE WEDGE-SHAPED DEFECT The Microstructure

Abstract:: Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the changes in the microstructure of the enamel and its chemical composition in the area of the wedge-shaped defect with the use of minimally invasive technologies in experiments. Materials and methods: The materials of the assessment were 45 thin sections of the teeth which had been extracted with orthodontic indications and had the wedge-shaped defect within the enamel. The changes in the enamel microstructure with the use of minimally invasive technologies - enamel infiltration Icon (DMG) and closure of the defect with the composite Estelite Asteria (Tokuyama Dental) were studied with the help of the scanning electronic microscope Quanta 200 i 3D FEI (USA) with the energy-dispersive microanalysis system with resolution capability 2,9 nm at 30 kV in dynamics Results. The structural changes in the enamel depend on the nature of the pathological process, its depth and microstructural changes. A developing pathological process is characterized by the presence of pores, deep cracks in the enamel rods, demineralization areas, linear chaotic defects with clear borders. The changes in the chemical composition of the enamel in the wedge-shaped defect is characterized by the increase in oxygenation by 1.2 combined with the decrease in carbon compounds by 1.4, the decrease in fluorine by 1.2 and the emergence of sulfur, thus most likely confirming the changes in the crystal structure of hydroxyapatite. With the help of the optical microscopy we were able to visualize the structural changes of the enamel within the defect in the samples with infiltration treatment by Icon (DMG) and closure of the defect with restoration. The conclusions concerning the necessity to continue the scientific research of the treatment of the wedge-shaped defect within the enamel were made.

Determination of the beta-blocker atenolol in plasma by capillary zone electrophoresis.

Abstract:A capillary zone electrophoretic method was optimised for the determination of the beta-blocker atenolol in plasma. Separation was performed in an uncoated silica capillary of 58.5 cm (effective length 50 cm) x 75 microm I.D., and detection was at 194 nm. The effects of the buffer (concentration and pH), the injection time, the voltage applied and the plasma clean-up procedure were studied. The determination of atenolol was achieved in less than 3 min, using an electrolyte of 50 mM H3BO3-50 mM Na2B4O7 (50:50, v/v) pH 9, injected hydrodynamically for 4 s at 50 mbar and applying a voltage of +25 kV. This method was applied to the determination of atenolol in plasma of nine hypertensive patients (male and female, aged from 39 to 73 years). Atenolol concentrations found vary from 30 to 585 ng/ml.

Abstract:This paper presents a detailed RF study for source/drain Schottky-barrier (SB) MOSFETs. Using on-wafer -parameters, high-frequency (HF) figures-of-merit (FoMs) and small-signal equivalent circuits (SSEC) are first extracted and discussed for a -gate-length SB MOSFET. Then, using ac simulations, HF FoM's sensitivity along SB height and underlap length variations are subsequently presented. The whole study provides, for SB MOSFETs, a deep understanding of key ac-element (transconductances and capacitances) behavior as well as process-parameter optimization to achieve the best HF FoMs.

Abstract:This paper presents a detailed analysis to directly compare the morphology and chemistry of human tooth layers using advanced scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques together with supporting data from energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) measurements. The aim of this study was to visualise and evaluate the structural and microanalytical differences of the mineralised hard tissues of human teeth. The extracted sound teeth without any pathologies were divided into the following groups: incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. Tooth samples were broken vertically to preserve the primary structures and to visualise individual tooth tissues. Specimens were also used to find variations in the elemental composition of tissues for different tooth groups. The average thickness of the enamel in the tooth groups studied was 1.1 mm and the average width of the enamel prisms was 4.2 µm, with the highest values observed for molars. The analysis of the chemical composition of the enamel showed that Ca and P were among the predominant elements. The average dentine thickness was 1.87 mm, with the highest values determined for molars, and the lowest for canines. The width of the dentinal tubules was less than 2 µm, for molars being significantly smaller. The analysis of the chemical composition of the dentine showed the highest O content of the all tooth tissues analyzed, while a lower P and Ca content was observed compared to the enamel. The cementum thickness averaged 0.14 mm, with the highest values observed for molars and the lowest for incisors. The analysis of the chemical composition of the cementum showed the lowest average O and P content, and the highest average C and N content, compared to the enamel and the dentine. Increasingly accurate imaging and analysis of dental hard tissue structures provides the opportunity for multifactorial evaluation in terms of their clinical application.

Abstract:Nanoindentation has been widely used for probing the mechanical properties of tooth, especially for characterizing its complex hierarchical structures. Previous studies have confirmed the anisotropic mechanical behaviors caused by the alternated orientations of enamel rods and the alignment of fibril-like hydroxyapatite crystals, but the longitudinal section of enamel, which was composed of parallel-arranged rods, was regarded as a homogeneous continuum as always. In this study, nanoindentation combined with SEM was carried out with the indenter rotating on the longitudinal section of enamel to evaluate the relativity between the nano-mechanical properties and the orientation of indentation impressions. It has been shown that the enamel presented different elastic modulus and hardness with different angles of indenter on its longitudinal section, and its anisotropy was also confirmed by the remarkable asymmetric morphologies of impressions. We observed that the parallel arrangement of crystal fibrils and enamel rods might trigger the expansion of the micro-cracks in preferred orientation, and result in scalene triangle indentation impressions, altering contact areas as well as inconsistent mechanical behaviors. Consequently, it is considered that the longitudinal sections of enamel should be modeled as anisotropic.

Abstract:Explaining how, and even why, the social brain experiences empathy is a complex integrative endeavor that has been explored by scientists of several disciplines working with both animal and human subjects. Current thoughts on empathy and its connection to behavior—prosocial, altruistic, and cruel alike—were explored by scholars in the fields of biology, philosophy, psychology, and anthropology at a conference in Chicago. The speakers' individually unique perspectives merged to provide an inclusive overview of the biological basis of, and cultural influences upon, empathy. The nature of empathy in nonhuman animals, the endocrine requirements for empathy, the effects of empathy on moral behavior, the social nature of pain, the relation between empathy and altruism, the ethnography of empathy, and empathy in the medical setting were discussed. The interdisciplinary nature of the conference demonstrated the advantages of communicating findings across fields while also delineating the difficulties that can stem from the existence of multiple approaches to, and definitions of, empathy. Future progress will be aided by working toward common definitions for empathy, sympathy, altruism, and so on, in concert with cross-disciplinary dialogues that allow practitioners of each discipline to be informed by paradigms and findings from complementary disciplines.
Quantitatively Studying Nano-mechanical Properties Within the Prism and Organic Sheath of Enamel

Abstract:Enamel is made up of enamel prisms separated by thin layer of organic sheaths. The mechanical properties of the prisms and the organic sheaths are obviously different from each other due to different compositions and microstructures. However, quantitative measurements of such differences have been a challenge in the past. The objective of this study is to accurately study the mechanical properties in the isolated domains within single enamel prism. The technique of nanoindentation combined with Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was employed to test the enamel specimens from mature human maxillary third molar. It was revealed that the nanohardness and elastic modulus of the sheaths were about 73.6% and 52.7% lower than those of the prisms. AFM topographies of the residual indent impressions also visually confirmed the differences. In addition to nanoindentation tests, the microstructures of enamel were carefully investigated in terms of hierarchical levels of organization to understand the structural reasons of the mechanical differences. We found a close relation between the variations of mechanical properties of enamel and its hierarchical structure. The analysis of the mechanical properties within enamel upon hierarchy is not only helpful to understand its unique property, but may also inspire ideas for the design of novel synthetic materials.

Abstract:A 16-year-old female self-referred, with vaginal bleeding and mild abdominal pain, having been amenorrehoeic for 4 months, and in supposed second trimester of pregnancy. She had been using Depo-Provera for contraception until her last injection in March 2005. In June 2005, she started using the combined oral contraceptive pill – Microgynon. Her last menstrual period was early July. She was confident that there was no break in contraception cover while changing methods. She reported having done two home pregnancy tests – one positive and one negative, and had attended a Family Planning Clinic on several occasions prior to her admission. She stated that a midwife had confirmed a pregnancy of 20 – 24 weeks’ gestation, having identified fetal heart using a Doppler and fetal movement on examination. In addition, the patient had experienced breast tenderness, fullness and milk discharge. Uterine fundus was not palpable abdominally and bimanual examination confirmed a normal size uterus. On speculum examination, the cervix appeared normal. Urinary pregnancy test was negative, this was confirmed by serum Beta-HCG. Follicular stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone levels were checked to rule out other causes of amenorrhoea, e.g. polycystic ovary syndrome. Prolactin levels did not substantiate the patient’s claim of milk discharge. These findings were presented to the patient, who remained convinced that she was pregnant. She was, therefore, referred for ultrasound scan, which showed no evidence of pregnancy. Uterus outline was normal with an endometrial thickness of 7.8 mm and no adnexal masses or free fluid were seen. The patient and her family initially showed disbelief at these findings but with discussion, eventually appeared to accept them. This woman was followed up at the gynaecology clinic, by which time she had fully accepted that she was not pregnant and had started menstruating. Discussion
The DIAD Approach to Correlative Synchrotron X-ray Imaging and Diffraction Analysis of Human Enamel

Abstract:The Dual Imaging and Diffraction (DIAD) beamline at Diamond Light Source (Didcot, U.K.) implements a correlative approach to the dynamic study of materials based on concurrent analysis of identical sample locations using complementary X-ray modalities to reveal structural detail at various length scales. Namely, the underlying beamline principle and its practical implementation allow the collocation of chosen regions within the sample and their interrogation using real-space imaging (radiography and tomography) and reciprocal space scattering (diffraction). The switching between the two principal modes is made smooth and rapid by design, so that the data collected is interlaced to obtain near-simultaneous multimodal characterization. Different specific photon energies are used for each mode, and the interlacing of acquisition steps allows conducting static and dynamic experiments. Building on the demonstrated realization of this state-of-the-art approach requires further refining of the experimental practice, namely, the methods for gauge volume collocation under different modes of beam-sample interaction. To address this challenge, experiments were conducted at DIAD devoted to the study of human dental enamel, a hierarchical structure composed of hydroxyapatite mineral nanocrystals, as a static sample previously affected by dental caries (tooth decay) as well as under dynamic conditions simulating the process of acid demineralization. Collocation and correlation were achieved between WAXS (wide-angle X-ray scattering), 2D (radiographic), and 3D (tomographic) imaging. While X-ray imaging in 2D or 3D modes reveals real-space details of the sample microstructure, X-ray scattering data for each gauge volume provided statistical nanoscale and ultrastructural polycrystal reciprocal-space information such as phase and preferred orientation (texture). Careful registration of the gauge volume positions recorded during the scans allowed direct covisualization of the data from two modalities. Diffraction gauge volumes were identified and visualized within the tomographic data sets, revealing the underlying local information to support the interpretation of the diffraction patterns. The present implementation of the 4D microscopy paradigm allowed following the progression of demineralization and its correlation with time-dependent WAXS pattern evolution in an approach that is transferable to other material systems.
On elastoplastic behavior of porous enamel-An indentation and numerical study

Abstract:The micro/nano pores in natural mineralized tissues can, to a certain extent, affect their responses to mechanical loading but are generally ignored in existing indentation analysis. In this study, we first examined the void volume fraction of sound and caries lesion enamels through micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). A Berkovich indentation study was then carried out to characterize the effect of porous microstructure on the mechanical behavior of the human enamels. The indentation tests were also modeled using the nonlinear finite element analysis technique to simulate indentation load-displacement curves, which showed reasonable agreement with the experimental measurements. From the simulation results, the extent of densification in the plastic zone was identified and the corresponding stress and contact pressure evolutions were quantified. Further, a conventional elastic-perfectly plastic material model without considering micropores was also developed to investigate the compaction effect of the porous structure. The simulation results reveal that conventional elastic perfect-plastic constitutive models become less reliable to model the mechanical behavior of carious lesion enamel with increasing loss of mineral content as it underestimates the yield stress and plastic energy dissipation. This study divulges the importance of compaction of porous enamel structure beneath the indented area. Note that understanding the effect of porous microstructures on plastic behavior is vital as the involved inelastic deformation mechanism associated with irreversible processes, such as wear and localized microcracking, has a significant bearing on wear and fatigue behavior of enamel. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Based on micro-CT and nano-indentation characterization, a numerical model was developed aiming to precisely describe the deformation behavior of naturally porous enamel. Inelastic properties and energy dissipation characteristics of porous enamel were investigated in detail. This work demonstrated that the existence of micro-pores in White Spot Lesions (WSLs) contributes to mechanical stability, which can mitigate the reduction in Young's modulus and fracture toughness resulting from loss of mineral components. The knowledge gained from this study can be used to explain the mechanisms related to irreversible processes, such as contact induced cracking and wear, and strengthen understanding of the mechanical behavior of porous mineralized tissues.

Abstract:Enamel dissolution occurs when it contacts with acids produced by plaque bacteria, foods or drinks. There have been numerous and varied studies quantifying and characterizing the rate, extent and chemical aspects of enamel erosion; however, there is still hot debate about the amounts of enamel softening and loss. The objective of this study was to measure the enamel erosion process with high accuracy. Native third molars were partly eroded in citric acid ( pH = 3.8) with some domains protected by a Ti coating layer. The surface morphology and structures before and after exposure to citric acid for different time periods were studied by AFM, SEM and nanoindentation, respectively. Based on this, the functions between the amounts of enamel softening, loss and erosion time were established for the first time. It was demonstrated that AFM, SEM and nanoindentation were suitable for measuring the early stages of enamel demineralization qualitatively and quantitatively.
Micron-scale crack propagation in laser-irradiated enamel and dentine studied with nano-CT

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to see the effect of Er:YAG laser irradiation in dentine and compare this with its effect in enamel. The mechanism of crack propagation in dentine was emphasised and its clinical implications were discussed. Materials and methods: Coronal sections of sound enamel and dentine were machined to 50-μm thickness using a FEI-Helios Plasma (FIB). The specimen was irradiated for 30 s with 2.94-μm Er:YAG laser radiation in a moist environment, using a sapphire dental probe tip, with the tip positioned 2 mm away from the sample surface. One of the sections was analysed as a control and not irradiated. Samples were analysed using the Zeiss Xradia 810 Ultra, which allows high spatial resolution, nanoscale 3D imaging using X-ray computed tomography (CT). Results: Dentine: In the peritubular dentine, micro-cracks ran parallel to the tubules whereas in the inter-tubular region, the cracks ran orthogonal to the dentinal tubules. These cracks extended to a mean depth of approximately 10 μm below the surface. On the dentine surface, there was preferential ablation of the less mineralised intertubular dentine, and this resulted in an irregular topography associated with tubules. Enamel: The irradiated enamel surface showed a characteristic 'rough' morphology suggesting some preferential ablation along certain microstructure directions. There appears to be very little subsurface damage, with the prismatic structure remaining intact. Conclusions: A possible mechanism is that laser radiation is transmitted down the dentinal tubules causing micro-cracks to form in the dentinal tubule walls that tend to be limited to this region. Clinical relevance: Crack might be a source of fracture as it represents a weak point and subsequently might lead to a failure in restorative dentistry.

Abstract:Background/Objectives: The presence of enamel on the tooth surface is crucial for the long-term success of minimally invasive adhesive restorations such as dental veneers. Our study aims to evaluate the enamel thickness in the incisal, middle, and cervical portions of the labial surface of the upper central incisors using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). This imaging method provides detailed and accurate three-dimensional images with a low radiation dose, allowing an accurate assessment of enamel thickness. The analysis aims to identify variations in enamel thickness depending on the age and different levels of the labial tooth surface. Methods: 800 CBCT scans performed for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes on patients aged 18–60 years were analyzed. The data were gathered from the imaging archives of private practitioners from Targu Mures and the "George Emil Palade" University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Targu Mures. Enamel thickness measurements were conducted using the OnDemand3D Communicator CBCT evaluation program, with subsequent statistical analysis performed using GraphPad Instat Prism software. Results: Results showed significant variation in enamel thickness between the incisal, middle, and cervical segments of the labial surface of the upper central incisors. A decrease in enamel thickness with age has been observed. In patients aged 18–40, mean values of enamel thickness 1 mm and 3 mm above the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) were 0.48 ± 0.092, respectively, 0.819 ± 0.158. In patients over 40, the mean values were 0.454 ± 0.116 and 0.751 ± 0.067 at 1 mm, respectively, 3 mm above the CEJ. Statistically significant differences were found between the two age groups at 1 mm and 3 mm above the CEJ, with p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0214. Conclusions: A statistically significant decrease can be observed in enamel thickness in almost the entire labial surface of the upper central incisors with aging. The varied thickness of the enamel at different tooth levels requires individualized planning for each patient to maximize the long-term aesthetic and functional results.

Abstract:The aim of this in vitro study was to present a method using confocal laser scanning microscopy for three-dimensional analysis of human dental enamel subjected to ceramic bracket debonding. The labial enamel surfaces of three upper central incisors were prepared and mounted in the form of standardized specimens. A sample repositioning protocol was established to enable surface measurement and analysis before and after bracket debonding. Observations were made of representative areas measuring 1,280 × 1,280 μ m 2 , in the center of the enamel samples, as well as of the total topography (2,500 × 3,500 μ m) of the bonding areas provided by the equipment software. Noncontact three-dimensional high-resolution image analyses revealed the capabilities of the employed technique and methodology to permit the examination of specific characteristics and alterations on the surfaces, before and after the debonding and finishing procedures. The new protocol was effective to provide qualitative and quantitative assessments of changes on the same dental surfaces at different trial times. The methodology constitutes a feasible tool for revealing the effects of debonding of ceramic brackets on sound and previously injured dental enamel surfaces.
