Abstract:Highly sensitive pressure sensors are usually made from soft materials that allow large deformations to be obtained when very small pressures are applied. Unfortunately, this current paradigm limits the ability to create sensors capable of high sensitivities and broad dynamic ranges, as these materials are prone to saturation responses when attempting to obtain measurements involving high pressures. In this paper, we detail a piezoresistive pressure sensor that is capable of high sensitivity over a pressure range spanning from 0.6 Pa (a mosquito touching a surface) to 200 kPa (an elephant standing on the surface). The sensor's ability to cover such a broad dynamic range is made possible by the fairly hard foam used in its construction as this material is capable of propagating strain in a highly effective manner due to its hierarchical porous structure. The material was fabricated by using high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) as a template to generate a highly porous material consisting of small pores packed between larger ones whose inner walls are lined with reduced graphene oxide. The developed foam exhibits very fast response times (less than 15.4 ms) and excellent cyclic stability (at least 10000 cycles). Furthermore, it is capable of responding to the entire tactile pressure range and it can be formatted as pixelated arrays, which makes it highly suitable for integration into wearable electronic devices. Such arrays were built and used to identify and render the shape of objects with different geometries, including a sphere, a triangle, a square, and two nearly identical rods differing only 0.4 mm in diameter.

Abstract:With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, the study of flexible pressure sensors has attracted great attention from researchers. However, in the face of extreme application environments such as aerospace and national defense, higher requirements are put forward for flexible pressure-sensing active materials. In this study, a novel electrospun polysulfonamide and polyacrylonitrile (PSAN) nanofiber-reinforced three-dimensional (3D) reduced graphene oxide aerogel (GA) is designed and fabricated. The pore wall of the aerogel has a leaf-like structure, the internal micropore has a "layer-pillar" structure, and the compression strength is as high as 26.07 kPa. The assembled piezoresistive sensor has a wide detection range (24.97 kPa), high sensitivity (32.85 kPa −1 ), and an extensive operating temperature range (−60 to 200 °C). It features a rapid response time of 300 ms at low pressure, excellent structural stability, and a sensing durability of over 3500 compression cycles. Moreover, the piezoresistive sensor can track the physiological and activity signals of the throat, face, fingers, elbows, knee joints, and other parts of the human body in real time, and has a stable sensing performance at ultra-low and high temperatures. These excellent sensing properties indicate that the GA aerogel has great application potential as a high-performance flexible piezoresistive active material in extreme environments.

Abstract:High-performance flexible pressure sensors are critical to realizing electronic skin and wearable devices. It is the persistent pursuit of researchers to develop more sensitive flexible pressure sensors. Here, we propose a simple and effective strategy to fabricate flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors based on fragmented graphene aerogel (FGA)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponges. Using FGA as a conductive filler and NaCl particles as a porogen and blending with PDMS, a composite material FGA@PDMS with a sponge structure was obtained. Then, the composite FGA@PDMS was dip-coated with FGA to achieve the FGA/FGA@PDMS sponge. Finally, the interdigitated electrode was printed as the bottom electrode by the screen-printing process to complete the preparation of the FGA/FGA@PDMS sensor. The results show that the fabricated flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor has higher sensitivity (0–10 kPa, 2235.84 kPa–1), good recovery, shorter response time (∼120 ms), and stable response under 1000 cycles of loading and unloading. Moreover, we investigated the applicability of the FGA/FGA@PDMS sensor as a wearable device and its application in practical sensing. Human motion detection such as arm bending, fingers, and soles of the feet shows that the sensor has good detection ability. The light-emitting-diode series circuit and the bluetooth-based wireless pressure sensor verification prototype system demonstrate the potential of the sensor for practical applications.

Abstract:With the development of wearable devices, the demand for pressure sensing has prompted the development of flexible pressure sensors with excellent overall performance, especially flexible piezoresistive sensors with long-term durability. In this study, covalently interconnected poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH)/MWCNTs composite nanofibrous aerogels with typical “layer–pillar” hierarchical porous structure were prepared by hydroxyl aldehyde condensation to cross-link thermoplastic nanofibers and hydroxylated carbon nanotube. Benefiting from the porous structure of composite nanofibrous aerogels and robust bonding between EVOH and MWCNTs, the prepared composite nanofibrous aerogel exhibited an ultralow density (18.27 mg/cm3), excellent compressibility and restorability (up to 80% strain), and remarkable fatigue durability exceeding 1000 times. Meanwhile, the compressive strength of the cross-linked composite aerogel was increased by a factor of 3.5 compared to the un-cross-linked composite aerogel (9.70 kPa). The composite nanofibrous aerogel can be assembled as a piezoresistive sensor, with a sensing capacity up to 80% strain (corresponding to 33.49 kPa) and detection limit of 80 Pa. Furthermore, the dynamic strain sensitivity and pressure sensitivity of the piezoresistive sensor are GF = 1.51 and S = 0.28 kPa–1, respectively. More importantly, the cyclic stability of the pressure resistance sensor was outstanding; even after 3000 cycles, its curve remained essentially consistent with the initial 50 cycles. These successes ensure the excellent performance of EVOH/MWCNTs composite nanofibrous aerogels for sensitive monitoring of mechanical signals, such as body posture monitoring, and show the great potential of aerogel sensors as the next generation of wearable electronics.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for electronic skin, health management, and extreme pressure monitoring, development of broad-response-range flexible pressure sensors is in urgent need. However, the reported flexible pressure sensors usually show a narrow detection range. It’s a great challenge to achieve a broad detection range of 1 Pa-10 MPa for a flexible pressure sensor. Herein, unprecedented bioinspired wearable pressure sensors based on highly stretchable reduced graphene oxide/polyurethane foam composite aerogels with modulus-gradient porous structures have been reported. A hot pressing method is applied to increase the modulus and compressive strength of the high-modulus layer of the aerogel, which ensures their compressibility at high pressures and significantly enhances the upper detection limit. Benefiting from their unique superelastic (90-99% reversible strain) and gradient structures with the gradient modulus spanning from 5.4 kPa to 430 kPa and gradient compressive stress (at 90% strain) spanning from 25 kPa to 37 MPa, the resulting pressure sensors exhibit a record-breaking detection range of 1 Pa-12.6 MPa. In addition, the pressure sensors can withstand 10000 cycles at a high pressure of 1 MPa, which can’t be achieved by traditional flexible pressure sensors. This work provides a versatile and powerful strategy towards next-generation high-performance broad-response-range flexible electronics.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have attracted tremendous research interests due to their wide applications in wearable electronics and smart robots. The easy-to-obtain fabrication and stable signal output are meaningful for the practical application of flexible pressure sensors. The graphene/polyurethane foam composites are prepared to develop a convenient method for piezo-resistive devices with simple structure and outstanding sensing performance. Graphene oxide was prepared through the modified Hummers method. Polyurethane foam was kept to soak in the obtained graphene oxide aqueous solution and then dried. After that, reduced graphene oxide/polyurethane composite foam has been fabricated under air phase reduction by hydrazine hydrate vapor. The chemical components and micro morphologies of the prepared samples have been observed by using FT-IR and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results predicted that the graphene is tightly adhered to the bare surface of the pores. The pressure sensing performance has been also evaluated by measuring the sensitivity, durability, and response time. The results indicate that the value of sensitivity under the range of 0–6 kPa and 6–25 kPa are 0.17 kPa−1 and 0.005 kPa−1, respectively. Cycling stability test has been performed 30 times under three varying pressures. The signal output just exhibits slight fluctuations, which represents the good cycling stability of the pressure sensor. At the same stage, the response time of loading and unloading of 20 g weight turned out to be about 300 ms. These consequences showed the superiority of graphene/polyurethane composite foam while applied in piezo-resistive devices including wide sensitive pressure range, high sensitivity, outstanding durability, and fast response.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors based on the piezoresistive mechanism hold great promise for emerging wearable applications. Structural engineering plays an integral role in the preparation of high-performance sensors. In this article, we design multiple structures in flexible piezoresistive sensors with a scalable and cost-effective method, in which reduced graphene oxide (rGO) serving as the conductive material is assembled onto two-layer interlocking frameworks made of pearl-patterned cotton towels (PPCTs), and porous laser-induced graphene (LIG) is selected as electrodes, and polystyrene microspheres (PSMSs) are filled into sensitive layers to act as the dielectric material. Benefited from the co-action of multiple structures, the sensor offers segmental sensitivities of 12.70, 1.10, and 0.18 kPa−1 over the range of 0–90 kPa, and there is a high linear sensitivity of 21.73 kPa−1 in the slight pressure range of 0–1 kPa. Through the detecting demonstration of a small object, the response and recovery time are estimated to be 120 and 60 ms. In addition, stability, durability, and reproducibility are proven to be qualified. At last, we preliminarily demonstrate the feasibility of potential wearable applications on detecting human body signals, ranging from pulses to muscle and joint activities.

Abstract:Abstract Flexible pressure sensors as wearable electronic devices to monitor human health have attracted significant attention. Herein, a simple and effective carbonization-free method is proposed to prepare a compressible and conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO)–modified plant fiber sponge (defined as rGO-PFS). The introduced GO can not only coat on the surface of plant fibers, but also form a large amount of aerogel with microcellular structure in the macroporous PFS. After reduction treatment, the rGO-PFS can form a double-continuous conductive network of rGO aerogel. With the improvement of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), the rGO-PFS@PDMS composite exhibits outstanding compressibility (up to 60% compression strain), excellent durability (10,000 stable compression cycles at 50% strain), high sensitivity (234.07 kPa −1 in a pressure range of 20 ~ 387.2 Pa), low detection limit (20 Pa), and rapid response time (28 ms) for practical wearable applications. Graphical Abstract A compressible and conductive reduced graphene oxide–modified plant fiber sponge is prepared by a simple and effective carbonization-free method. With the improvement of polydimethylsiloxane, the sponge exhibits outstanding compressibility, durability, high sensitivity, low detection limit, and rapid response time for practical wearable applications.

Abstract:Aerogel-based conductive materials have emerged as a major candidate for piezoresistive pressure sensors due to their excellent mechanical and electrical performance besides light-weighted and low-cost characteristics, showing great potential for applications in electronic skins, biomedicine, robot controlling and intelligent recognition. However, it remains a grand challenge for these piezoresistive sensors to achieve a high sensitivity across a wide working temperature range. Herein, we report a highly flexible and ultra-light composite aerogel consisting of aramid nanofibers (ANFs) and reduced graphene oxide flakes (rGOFs) for application as a high-performance pressure sensing material in a wide temperature range. By controlling the orientations of pores in the composite framework, the aerogel promotes pressure transfer by aligning its conductive channels. As a result, the ANFs/rGOFs aerogel-based piezoresistive sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of up to 7.10 kPa-1, an excellent stability over 12,000 cycles, and an ultra-wide working temperature range from -196 to 200 °C. It is anticipated that the ANFs/rGOFs composite aerogel can be used as reliable sensing materials in extreme environments.

Abstract:Pressure sensing is key to smart wearable electronics and human–machine interaction interfaces. To achieve a high‐performance pressure sensor that has broad linear range and is capable of detecting subtle changes of pressure, the good choice of sensing materials and rational design of structures are both needed. A novel piezoresistive sensor based on hollow MXene spheres/reduced graphene composite aerogel and flexible interdigital electrodes is presented. Benefiting from the unique microstructure of the composite aerogel, the prepared pressure sensor exhibits high sensitivity (609 kPa−1 in the range of 6.4–10 kPa), broad linear range (0–10 kPa), low detection limit (6 Pa), short response time (232 ms), and good durability (6000 cycles). Moreover, the device is able to monitor various human activities in real time, as well as distinguish tiny differences of grain. The potential application of mapping the location and intensity of the pressures is also explored.

Abstract:Current flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors still face challenges, such as poor stability and a limited detection range, making it difficult to accurately discern small-scale pressures in the Pa or MPa range when meeting sudden pressure events. To tackle the above issues, this study presents the development of a competent sensor composed of porous conductive elastomer and laser-induced graphene electrodes. The substrate of the composite elastomer is a porous silicone elastomer obtained by the additive reaction using template methods, and the conductive filler consisting of reduced graphene oxide is synthesized through an eco-friendly approach. We demonstrated that the sensors fabricated here have the ability to precisely resolve pressures from 542 Pa to 1.5 MPa with long-term stability, as well as the detection of subtle signals, such as pulse pulsation and throat vibrations. Above all, such sensors have great potential in the application of human-machine interaction.

Abstract:Achieving high sensitivity over a broad pressure range remains a great challenge in designing piezoresistive pressure sensors due to the irreconcilable requirements in structural deformability against extremely high pressures and piezoresistive sensitivity to very low pressures. This work proposes a hybrid aerogel/hydrogel sensor by integrating a nanotube structured polypyrrole aerogel with a polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel. The aerogel is composed of durable twined polypyrrole nanotubes fabricated through a sacrificial templating approach. Its electromechanical performance can be regulated by controlling the thickness of the tube shell. A thicker shell enhances the charge mobility between tube walls and thus expedites current responses, making it highly sensitive in detecting low pressure. Moreover, a nucleotide-doped PAAm hydrogel with a reversible noncovalent interaction network is harnessed as the flexible substrate to assemble the aerogel/hydrogel hybrid sensor and overcome sensing saturation under extreme pressures. This highly stretchable and self-healable hybrid polymer sensor exhibits linear response with high sensitivity (Smin > 1.1 kPa-1 ), ultrabroad sensing range (0.12-≈400 kPa), and stable sensing performance over 10 000 cycles at the pressure of 150 kPa, making it an ideal sensing device to monitor pressures from human physiological signals to significant stress exerted by vehicles.

Abstract:3D aerogel-based piezoresistive sensors have attracted tremendous attention due to their high sensitivity and excellent mechanical properties. Here, a novel piezoresistive sensor with ultrahigh linear sensitivity is tactfully designed and prepared based on nanofiber-reinforced MXene‚Äďreduced graphene oxide aerogel. The presence of MXene endows the piezoresistive sensor with high conductivity. Besides, the nanofibers can act as a scaffold to improve the compression resilience of the aerogel significantly by penetrating the entire aerogel network. Furthermore, due to the synergy effect among the multiple components, the prepared piezoresistive sensor exhibits outstanding performance, including high linear sensitivity (331 kPa‚ąí1 from 0 to 500¬†Pa, 126 kPa‚ąí1 from 500¬†Pa to 7.5¬†kPa), fast response time (load 71¬†ms, recovery 15¬†ms), and low detection limit (1.25¬†Pa). More importantly, it can maintain stable signal output even after 17¬†000 compression cycles. Furthermore, the prepared sensor can efficiently detect breathing, heartbeat, and vocalization of the human body in real time. Based on these advantages, the prepared sensor is expected to show significant potentials in future flexible wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:The high demand for multifunctional devices for smart clothing applications, human motion detection, soft robotics, and artificial electronic skins has encouraged researchers to develop new high-performance flexible sensors. In this work, we fabricated and tested new 3D squeezable Ecoflex® open cell foams loaded with different concentrations of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) in order to obtain lightweight, soft, and cost-effective piezoresistive sensors with high sensitivity in a low-pressure regime. We analyzed the morphology of the produced materials and characterized both the mechanical and piezoresistive response of samples through quasi-static cyclic compression tests. Results indicated that sensors infiltrated with 1 mg of ethanol/GNP solution with a GNP concentration of 3 mg/mL were more sensitive and stable compared to those infiltrated with the same amount of ethanol/GNP solution but with a lower GNP concentration. The electromechanical response of the sensors showed a negative piezoresistive behavior up to ~10 kPa and an opposite trend for the 10–40 kPa range. The sensors were particularly sensitive at very low deformations, thus obtaining a maximum sensitivity of 0.28 kPa−1 for pressures lower than 10 kPa.

Abstract:Wearable sensors with excellent flexibility and sensitivity have emerged as a promising field for healthcare, electronic skin, and so forth. Three-dimensional (3D) graphene sponges (GS) have emerged as high-performance piezoresistive sensors; however, problems, such as limited flexibility, high cost, and low sensitivity, remain. Meanwhile, devicelevel wearable pressure sensors with GS have rarely been demonstrated. In this work, highly ordered 3D porous graphene sponges (OPGSs) were first successfully prepared and controlled through an emulsion method, and then a devicelevel wearable pressure sensor with high flexibility and sensitivity was assembled with a gold electrode and polydimethylsiloxane into a reliable package. The pH values were care-fully controlled to form a stable emulsion and the OPGSs showed a highly ordered 3D structure with ultralow density, high porosity, and conductivity; this resulted in a gauge factor of 0.79-1.46, with 50% compression strain and excellent long-term reproducibility over 500 cycles of compression- relaxation. Moreover, the well-packaged pressure sensor devices exhibited ultrahigh sensitivity to detect human motions, such as wrist bending, elbow bending, finger bending, and palm flexing. A high performance capacitive flexible pressure sensor based on three-dimensional porous rGO/PDMS composite

Abstract:Capacitive flexible pressure sensors have been widely used in the fields of human motion monitoring and wearable electronic devices due to their simple structure, swift response, and easy integration. However, it remains a significant challenge to develop capacitive flexible pressure sensors with high linearity and sensitivity in a wide working range. Inspired by the compound structure of human bones and soft tissues, this paper presents a novel capacitive flexible pressure sensor based on three-dimensional porous rGO/PDMS composite. A polyurethane (PU) sponge coated with graphene oxide (GO) was exposed to an ethanol flame to remove the sponge matrix and reduce the GO. Then polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was encapsulated onto the prepared 3D porous conductive graphene to form a hierarchical core–shell structured rGO/PDMS composite. In this configuration, rGO skeleton provides strength and conductivity while PDMS sheath supplies flexibility and elasticity, which synergistically makes it an ideal sensing material for flexible pressure sensors. The prepared rGO/PDMS composite material was sandwiched between two copper foil electrodes as a dielectric layer to form a capacitive flexible pressure sensor. Performance tests demonstrate that the fabricated sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 0.864 kPa −1 , a high stability over 2000 cycles, and a rapid response time of 20 ms. Meanwhile, the sensor achieves excellent linearity ( R 2 = 0.997) within the pressure range of 50–275 kPa. Based on excellent sensing performance, the sensor can be successfully used in monitoring activities and joint movements, demonstrating its broad application potential in wearable devices and human health monitoring.

Abstract:A well dispersed aqueous suspension of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) enriched with silk fibroin nanofibrils and regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) was properly prepared, taking the advantage of the so called selective aggregation of silk fibroin nanofibrils on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets, and then a series of composited sponges with different proportions of RGO and RSF were obtained by the process of freezing and ethanol treatment at low temperature. To improve the pressure-sensitive conductivity of those composited sponges, the extra RGO nanosheets were deposited on the surface of the sponge by solution immersion. SEM observation and mechanical testing showed that the introduction of RGO not only made the corresponding micro/nano structure in RSF based sponge benefit the adhering of extra RGO nanosheets, but also favorited to the mechanical properties of the sponge. Moreover, the RGO/RSF sponges displayed significant strength and elasticity under the completely wet state, and could achieve good compression recovery effect and pressure sensing performance between compression strain of 0%-80%. Among them, the sensitivity of such composited sponge with the optimal proportion of the component could reach 0.15 kPa(-1) regarding its resistance change under low pressure. Also, it worked efficiently under the pressure in the range of 0-17.3 kPa and presented excellent electrical stability and durability. Therefore, such pressure sensing material based on RGO/RSF sponge is expected to apply in energy-saving and environmental friendly flexible electronic devices due to its high sensitivity, wide working range, adjustable structure, renewability, good plasticity and so on.
Mechanically Robust and Elastic Graphene/Aramid Nanofiber/Polyaniline Nanotube Aerogels for Pressure Sensors

Abstract:The preparation of graphene-based aerogels with excellent mechanical strength, elasticity, and compressibility is still a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a robust, elastic, and lightweight graphene/aramid nanofiber/polyaniline nanotube (rGO/ANF/PANIT) aerogel that is prepared by mixing graphene oxide (GO), ANF, and PANIT dispersions, followed by thermal treatment at 90 °C, freeze-drying, and a low-temperature annealing process. The PANIT bonds the graphene sheets tightly, benefitting the formation of composite gels. The ANF tightly interconnects the graphene sheets and further reinforces the composite network framework significantly, hence endowing rGO/ANF/PANIT composite aerogels with robust mechanical property. The prepared aerogels present a low density of ∼12 mg cm–3, high conductivity, good resilience, and high compressibility.
