Abstract:Whilst the periodontal ligament (PDL) acts as an attachment tissue between bone and tooth, hypotheses regarding the role of the PDL as a hydrodynamic damping mechanism during intraoral food processing have highlighted its potential importance in finite element (FE) analysis. Although experimental and constitutive models have correlated the mechanical function of the PDL tissue with its anisotropic, heterogeneous, viscoelastic and non-linear elastic nature, in many FE simulations the PDL is either present or absent, and when present is variably modelled. In addition, the small space the PDL occupies and the inability to visualize the PDL tissue using μCT scans poses issues during FE model construction and so protocols for the PDL thickness also vary. In this paper we initially test and validate the sensitivity of an FE model of a macaque mandible to variations in the Young's modulus and the thickness of the PDL tissue. We then tested the validity of the FE models by carrying out experimental strain measurements on the same mandible in the laboratory using laser speckle interferometry. These strain measurements matched the FE predictions very closely, providing confidence that material properties and PDL thickness were suitably defined. The FE strain results across the mandible are generally insensitive to the absence and variably modelled PDL tissue. Differences are only found in the alveolar region adjacent to the socket of the loaded tooth. The results indicate that the effect of the PDL on strain distribution and/or absorption is restricted locally to the alveolar bone surrounding the teeth and does not affect other regions of the mandible.

Abstract:It is generally accepted that the periodontal ligament (PDL) plays a crucial role in transferring occlusal forces from the teeth to the alveolar bone. Studies using finite element analysis (FEA) have helped to better understand this role and show that the stresses and strains in the alveolar bone are influenced by whether and how PDL is included in FE models. However, when the overall distribution of stresses and strains in crania and mandibles are of interest, PDL is often not included in FE models, although little is known about how this affects the results. Here we study the effect of representing PDL as a layer of solid material with isotropic homogeneous properties in an FE model of a human mandible using a novel application of geometric morphometrics. The results show that the modelling of the PDL affects the deformation and thus strain magnitudes not only of the alveolar bone around the biting tooth, but that the whole mandible deforms differently under load. As a result, the strain in the mandibular corpus is significantly increased when PDL is included, while the strain in the bone beneath the biting tooth is reduced. These results indicate the importance of the PDL in FE studies. Thus we recommend that the PDL should be included in FE models of the masticatory apparatus, with tests to assess the sensitivity of the results to changes in the Young's modulus of the PDL material.

Abstract:In order to describe the biomechanical behaviors of PDL (periodontal ligament) accurately,based on the theory of continuum mechanics in large deformation and the hypothesis of incompressible isotropy,a hyperelastic-viscoelastic model of PDL and parameters were constructed by data fitting function in finite element software ABAQUS based on experimental data of plane shear and stress relaxation of human PDL.Then,the PDL hyperelastic-viscoelastic model was evaluated on the accuracy through simulations to the plane shear experiments of five PDL specimens.Finally,the mechanical responses to loads of PDL linear elastic model and hyperelastic-viscoelastic model were compared and analyzed by finite element simulations.The results indicated PDL was approximately expressed by linear elastic model when the displacements of root were within 0 ～ 0.06mm,while hyperelastic-viscoelastic model was more accurate to describe the material characteristics of PDL when the displacements exceed 0.06 mm,meanwhile a significant difference between two models could be observed.Based on this study,a practical PDL hyperelastic-viscoelastic model was acquired and a strong theoretical foundation was constructed for orthodontic biomechanical investigating and accurate treatment planning.
Mandible Integrity and Material Properties of the Periodontal Ligament during Orthodontic Tooth Movement: A Finite-Element Study

Abstract:We used the finite-element method (FEM) to investigate the effects of jawbone model integrity and the material properties of the periodontal ligament (PDL) on orthodontic tooth movement. Medical imaging software and computer-aided design software were used to create finite-element models of a partial and complete mandibles based on dental cone beam computed tomography images of the human skull. Additionally, we exerted an orthodontic force on the canine crown in the direction of an orthodontic miniscrew under a lower molar root to compare the von Mises strain on the canine PDL in three models: a partial mandible model under orthodontic force (Model 1), a complete mandible model under orthodontic force (Model 2), and a complete mandible model under orthodontic force with clench occlusion in the intercuspal position (ICP; Model 3). Additionally, in the complete mandible model under orthodontic force with ICP occlusion, we analyzed the effects of a PDL with a low (Model 4), moderate (Model 5), and high (Model 6) linear elastic modulus and a PDL a bilinear elastic modulus (Model 7). The simulation results for mandible integrity indicated that the maximum von Mises strains on the canine PDL for Models 1, 2, and 3 were 0.461, 0.394, and 1.811, respectively. Moreover, for the models with different PDL material properties, the maximum von Mises strains on the canine PDLs for Models 4, 5, 6, and 7 were 6.047, 2.594, 0.887, and 1.811, respectively. When the FEM was used to evaluate tooth movement caused by orthodontic force, the transformation of a complete mandible model into a partial mandible model or alteration of the elastic modulus of the PDL influenced the biomechanical responses of the PDL. Additionally, the incorporation of daily ICP occlusion resulted in a larger effect.

Abstract:<h6>Purpose</h6><p>The stresses and deformations in the periodontal ligament (PDL) under the realistic kinetic loading of the jaw system, <em>i.e</em>., chewing, are difficult to be determined numerically as the mechanical properties of the PDL is variably present in different finite element (FE) models. This study was aimed to conduct a dynamic finite element (FE) simulation to investigate the role of the PDL (PDL) material models in the induced stresses and deformations using a simplified patient-specific FE model of a human jaw system.</p><h6>Methods</h6><p>To do that, a realistic kinetic loading of chewing was applied to the incisor point, contralateral, and ipsilateral condyles, through the experimentally proven trajectory approach. Three different material models, including the elasto-plastic, hyperelastic, and viscoelastic, were assigned to the PDL, and the resulted stresses of the tooth FE model were computed and compared.</p><h6>Results</h6><p>The results revealed the highest von Mises stress of 620.14 kPa and the lowest deformation of 0.16 mm in the PDL when using the hyperelastic model. The concentration of the stress in the elastoplastic and viscoelastic models was in the mid-root and apex of the PDL, while for the hyperelastic model, it was concentrated in the cervical margin. The highest deformation in the PDL regardless of the employed material model was located in the caudal direction of the tooth. The viscoelastic PDL absorbed the transmitted energy from the dentine and led to lower stress in the cancellous bone compared to the elastoplastic and hyperelastic material models.</p><h6>Conclusion</h6><p>These results have implications not only for understanding the stresses and deformations in the PDL under chewing but also for providing comprehensive information for the medical and biomechanical experts in regard of the role of the material models being used to address the mechanical behavior of the PDL in other components of the tooth.</p>

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: To quantify the biomechanical properties of the bovine periodontal ligament (PDL) in postmortem sections and to apply these properties to study orthodontic tooth intrusion using finite element analysis (FEA). We hypothesized that PDL's property inherited heterogeneous (anatomical dependency) and nonlinear stress-strain behavior that could aid FEA to delineate force vectors with various rectangular archwires. Materials and Methods: A dynamic mechanical analyzer was used to quantify the stress-strain behavior of bovine PDL. Uniaxial tension tests using three force levels (0.5, 1, and 3 N) and samples from two anatomical locations (circumferential and longitudinal) were performed to calculate modulus. The Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic (MRH) model was applied to the experimental data and used in an FEA of orthodontic intrusion rebounded via a 0.45-mm step bend with three archwire configurations of two materials (stainless steel and TMA). Results: Force levels and anatomical location were statistically significant in their effects on modulus (P < .05). The apical part had a greater stiffness than did the middle part. The MRH model was found to approximate the experimental data well (r = 0.99), and it demonstrated a reasonable stress-strain outcome within the PDL and bone for FEA intrusion simulation. The force acting on the tooth increased five times from the 0.016 × 0.022-inch TMA to the 0.019 × 0.025-inch stainless steel. Conclusions: The PDL is a nonhomogeneous tissue in which the modulus changed in relation to location. PDL nonlinear constitutive model estimated quantitative force vectors for the first time to compare intrusive tooth movement in 3-D space in response to various rectangular archwires.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: This review is intended to highlight and discuss discrepancies in the literature of the periodontal ligament's (PDL) mechanical properties and the various analytical models, approaches and assumptions used in simulating its behaviour. The present study then offers to propose a model development that allows for a better phenomenological description of PDL behaviour under static, near clinical, orthodontic loading conditions.METHODOLOGY: Searches were performed on biomechanical and orthodontic publications (in databases: Compendex, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, ScienceDirect and Scopus).RESULTS: The review revealed that significant variations exist, some on the order of six orders of magnitude, in the PDL's elastic constants and mechanical properties. Possible explanations may be attributable to different modelling approaches and behavioural assumptions.SIGNIFICANCE: The discrepancies highlight the need for further research into determining what the key factors that contribute to tooth movement are, their correlations and their degree of impact. Despite the PDL's definitive role in orthodontic tooth movement, proposed models of the PDL's mechanical behaviour thus far have been unsatisfactorily inadequate. Hence, there is a need to develop a robust PDL model that more accurately simulates the PDL's biomechanical response to orthodontic loads. Better understanding of the PDL's biomechanical behaviour under physiologic and traumatic loading conditions might enhance the understanding of the PDL's biologic reaction in health and disease. Providing a greater insight into the response of the PDL would be instrumental to orthodontists and engineers for designing more predictable, and therefore more efficacious, orthodontic appliances.

Abstract:<p>The periodontal ligament (PDL) is a critical player in the maintenance of tooth health, acting as the primary stabilizer of tooth position. Recent studies have identified two unique regions within the PDL, the 'dense collar' region and the 'furcation' region, which exhibit distinct structural and compositional differences. However, specific functional differences between these regions have yet to be investigated. We adapted an AFM-based nanoscale rheology method to regionally assess mechanical properties and poroelasticity in the mouse PDL while minimizing the disruption of the 3-dimensional native boundary conditions, and then explored tissue mechanical function in four different regions within the dense collar as well as in the furcation region. We found significant differences between the collar and furcation regions, with the collar acting as a stabilizing ligamentous structure and the furcation acting as both a compressive cushion for vertical forces and a conduit for nutrient transport. While this finding supports our hypothesis, based on previous studies investigating structural and compositional differences, we also found surprising inhomogeneity within the collar region itself. This inhomogeneity supports previous findings of a tilting movement in the buccal direction of mandibular molar teeth and the structural adaptation to prevent lingual movement. Future work will aim to understand how different regions of the PDL change functionally during biological or mechanical perturbations, such as orthodontic tooth movement, development, or aging, with the ultimate goal of better understanding the mechanobiology of the PDL function in health and disease.</p>

Abstract:Introduction Finite element (FE) method has been used to calculate stress in the periodontal ligament (PDL), which is crucial in orthodontic tooth movement. The stress depends on the PDL material property, which varies significantly in previous studies. This study aimed to determine the effects of different PDL properties on stress in PDL using FE analysis. Methods A 3-dimensional FE model was created consisting of a maxillary canine, its surrounding PDL, and alveolar bone obtained from cone-beam computed tomography scans. One Newton of intrusion force was applied vertically to the crown. Then, the hydrostatic stress and the von Mises stress in the PDL were computed using different PDL material properties, including linear elastic, viscoelastic, hyperelastic, and fiber matrix. Young's modulus (E), used previously from 0.01 to 1000 MPa, and 3 Poisson's ratios, 0.28, 0.45, and 0.49, were simulated for the linear elastic model. Results The FE analyses showed consistent patterns of stress distribution. The high stresses are mostly concentrated at the apical area, except for the linear elastic models with high E (E >15 MPa). However, the magnitude varied significantly from −14.77 to −127.58 kPa among the analyzed patients. The E-stress relationship was not linear. The Poisson's ratio did not affect the stress distribution but significantly influenced the stress value. The hydrostatic stress varied from −14.61 to −95.48 kPa. Conclusions Different PDL material properties in the FE modeling of dentition do not alter the stress distributions. However, the magnitudes of the stress significantly differ among the patients with the tested material properties.

Abstract:BackgroundThe biomechanical property of the periodontal ligament (PDL) is important in orthodontics and prosthodontics. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of measuring the biomechanical behavior of the periodontal ligament using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT).MethodsA custom-made apparatus measured the force and displacement of a porcine PDL specimen within the micro-CT environment. Synchronized computed tomography (CT) images were used to obtain the deformation and displacement of the entire specimen and to reconstruct the three-dimensional mesh model. To match the experimental results, finite element analysis was then applied to simulate the biomechanical response of the PDL. The mechanical model of the PDL was assumed as the hyperelastic material in this study.ResultsThe volume variations of the tooth and the alveolar bone were less than 1%, which implies that tooth displacement was caused mostly by displacement of the PDL. Only translational displacement was observed with each load step because the transformation matrix acquired from the CT image registration was identical. The force-displacement curve revealed the nonlinear behavior of the PDL. There was a high correlation between the experimental displacement results and the simulation displacement results. The numerical results (based on the assumption that the PDL is the hyperelastic material) showed good agreement with the experimental results.ConclusionsNondestructive measurements by micro-CT obtained the biomechanical behavior of the PDL. Using the hyperelastic characteristic as the constitutive model can properly predict the force-displacement relation of the PDL after loading. This study provided a feasible approach for measuring the biomechanical behavior of the PDL for further dental application.

Abstract:TIGRIsat is the first Iraqi satellite. It has been launched on June 19th 2014, becoming the first Iraqi satellite. The small spacecraft is a 3 Unit CubeSat nanosatellite, weighting under 4 kg and carrying a camera for monitoring dust and sand storms over Iraq. TIGRIsat has been built by Iraqi post-graduate students within a bilateral Italian-Iraqi collaboration. The payload of the satellite has been designed to target an area covering all the surface of Iraq, and producing images which will be transmitted to the ground stations and processed to identify sand and dust storms occurring in that area.

Abstract:The periodontal ligament (PDL) is a unique fibrous connective tissue that regulates periodontal homeostasis mechanisms. Its biomechanical properties primarily reside in the hierarchical and non-uniform collagenous network. This study aimed to investigate the region-specific structure and composition of collagen fibers in the PDL at various scales and to explore their relationship with mechanical properties in a split-mouth design. Fresh human cadaver transverse PDL specimens of maxillary anterior teeth were categorized into cervical, middle, and apical groups. These specimens were analyzed via Masson's trichrome staining, scanning electron microscopy, picrosirius red (PSR) staining, three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction, Raman spectroscopy, and uniaxial tensile test. Statistical analyses were performed to compare the structural, compositional, and tensile properties among the groups. Notably, the middle PDL samples exhibited superior tensile strength and higher fiber area fraction than the other two transverse sections. Despite a higher mineral-to-matrix ratio and a different collagen secondary structure, the apical PDL demonstrated a relatively weaker tensile strength, possibly associated with its discovered sparser collagen fiber areal fraction. The cervical region, characterized by a mediocre fiber areal fraction, displayed diminished tensile strength. The 3D reconstructed collagenous network model and PSR staining exposed the fiber interaction and the micropores. Microscale porosity and variations in collagen secondary structure, particularly in the apical region, suggest adaptive mechanisms for accommodating compressive forces and maintaining functional integrity. Variance in the tensile properties of samples in different force directions indicated the significant influence of fiber orientation and root level on tissue mechanics. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This study provides critical insights into the biomechanical and structural properties of the human periodontal ligament (PDL), particularly focusing on the underexplored anterior teeth. Through advanced techniques like SEM, histological staining, 3D reconstruction, Raman spectroscopy, and tensile testing, we reveal significant regional variations in PDL collagen organization, composition, and biomechanical properties. Our findings address a crucial knowledge gap concerning the material mechanics of the PDL, offering a foundational understanding for future periodontal tissue engineering and biomimetic material development. This multi-scale analysis underscores the importance of both mesoscale structural characteristics and nanoscale molecular structures in maintaining PDL mechanical integrity.

Abstract:The biomechanical events which accompany functional loading of the human mandible are not fully understood. The techniques normally used to record them are highly invasive. Computer modelling offers a promising alternative approach in this regard, with the additional ability to predict regional stresses and strains in inaccessible locations. In this study, we built two three-dimensional finite element (FE) models of a human mandible reconstructed from tomographs of a dry dentate jaw. The first model was used for a complete mechanical characterization of physical events. It also provided comparative data for the second model, which had an increased vertical corpus depth. In both cases, boundary conditions included rigid restraints at the first right molar and endosteal cortical surfaces of the articular eminences of temporal bones. Groups of parallel multiple vectors simulated individual masticatory muscle loads. The models were solved for displacements, stresses, strains, and forces. The simulated muscle loads in the first model deformed the mandible helically upward and toward its right (working) side. The highest principal stresses occurred at the bite point, anterior aspects of the coronoid processes, symphyseal region, and right and left sides of the mandibular corpus. In general, the observed principal stresses and strains were highest on the periosteal cortical surface and alveolar bone. At the symphyseal region, maximum principal stresses and strains were highest on the lower lingual mandibular aspect, whereas minimum principal stresses and strains were highest on its upper labial side. Subcondylar principal strains and condylar forces were higher on the left (balancing or nonbiting) side than on the right mandibular side, with condylar forces more concentrated on the anteromedial aspect of the working-side condyle and on the central and lateral aspects of the left. When compared with in vivo strain data from macaques during comparable biting events, the predictive strain values from the first model were qualitatively similar. In the second model, the reduced tensile stress on the working-side, and decreased shear stress bilaterally, confirmed that lower stresses occurred on the lower mandibular border with increased jaw depth. Our results suggested that although the mandible behaved in a beam-like manner, its corpus acted more like a combination of open and closed cross sections due to the presence of tooth sockets, at least for the task modelled.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract:The stressed state of the periodontal ligament (PDL) is understood to play a critical role in the tooth movement initiated by orthodontic treatment. Finite element simulations have been used to describe PDL stresses for orthodontic loading; however, these models have predominantly assumed linear mechanical properties for the PDL. The present study sought to determine the importance of using nonlinear mechanical properties and nonuniform geometric data in computer predictions of periodontal ligament stresses and tooth movements. A 2-dimensional plane-strain finite element model of a mandibular premolar was constructed based on anatomic data of transverse sections of tooth, PDL, and bone from a 24-year-old cadaveric man. A second model was constructed of the same tooth but with a PDL of uniform thickness. Each of these was prescribed linear or nonlinear elastic mechanical properties, as obtained in our own experiments. Predictions of the maximum and minimum principal stresses and von Mises stresses in the PDL were determined for extrusive and tipping forces. The results indicated that biofidelic finite element models predicted substantially different stresses in the PDL for extrusive loading than did the uniform thickness model, suggesting that incorporation of the hourglass shape of the PDL is warranted. In addition, incorporation of nonlinear mechanical properties for the PDL resulted in dramatic increases in the stresses at the apex and cervical margin as compared with the linear models.

One millimetre transverse sections of teeth, PDL and alveolar bone of mandibular premolars were examined in a materials testing machine. During testing bone was supported by metal rings and teeth by metal cylinders of individually adjusted sizes. Having corrected for differences of size and width of the PDL the influence of root level was estimated using a multivariate analysis of variance. The shear strength was almost constant at the upper part of the root, diminishing in apical direction. The shear extensibility and the relative failure energy in shear were higher at the middle of the root, diminishing coronally and apically. Only the elastic stiffness did not vary significantly along the root. These results demonstrate that in order to compare the mechanical properties of PDL care should be taken to compare areas at the same root level.

Abstract:Introduction. This review is intended to highlight and discuss discrepancies in the literature of the periodontal ligament's (PDL) mechanical properties and the various experimental approaches used to measure them. Methods. Searches were performed on biomechanical and orthodontic publications (in databases: Compendex, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus). Results. The review revealed that significant variations exist, some on the order of six orders of magnitude, in the PDL's elastic constants and mechanical properties. Possible explanations may be attributable to different experimental approaches and assumptions. Conclusions. The discrepancies highlight the need for further research into PDL properties under various clinical and experimental loading conditions. Better understanding of the PDL's biomechanical behavior under physiologic and traumatic loading conditions might enhance the understanding of the PDL's biologic reaction in health and disease. Providing a greater insight into the response of the PDL would be instrumental to orthodontists and engineers for designing more predictable, and therefore more efficacious, orthodontic appliances.
Tensile testing of the mechanical behavior of the human periodontal ligament

Abstract:BackgroundThe periodontal ligament (PDL) plays a key role in alveolar bone remodeling and resorption during tooth movements. The prediction of tooth mobility under functional dental loads requires a deep understanding of the mechanical behavior of the PDL, which is a critical issue in dental biomechanics. This study was aimed to examine the mechanical behavior of the PDL of the maxillary central and lateral incisors from human. The experimental results can contribute to developing an accurate constitutive model of the human PDL in orthodontics.MethodsThe samples of human incisors were cut into three slices. Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted under different loading rates. The transverse sections (cervical, middle and apex) normal to the longitudinal axis of the root of the tooth were used in the uniaxial tensile tests. Based on a bilinear simplification of the stress–strain relations, the elastic modulus of the PDL was calculated. The values of the elastic modulus in different regions were compared to explore the factors that influence the mechanical behavior of the periodontal ligament.ResultsThe obtained stress–strain curves of the human PDL were characterized by a bilinear model with two moduli (E1 and E2) for quantifying the elastic behavior of the PDL from the central and lateral incisors. Statistically significant differences of the elastic modulus were observed in the cases of 1, 3, and 5 N loading levels for the different teeth (central and lateral incisors). The results showed that the mechanical property of the human incisors’ PDLs is dependent on the location of PDL (ANOVA, P = 0.022, P < 0.05). The elastic moduli at the middle planes were greater than at the cervical and apical planes. However, at the cervical, middle, and apical planes, the elastic moduli of the mesial and distal site were not significantly different (ANOVA, P = 0.804, P > 0.05).ConclusionsThe values of elastic modulus were determined in the range between 0.607 and 4.274 MPa under loads ranging from 1 to 5 N. The elastic behavior of the PDL is influenced by the loading rate, tooth type, root level, and individual variation.

Abstract:In the study of oral orthodontics, the dental tissue models play an important role in finite element analysis results. Currently, the commonly used alveolar bone models mainly have two kinds: the uniform and the non-uniform models. The material of the uniform model was defined with the whole alveolar bone, and each mesh element has a uniform mechanical property. While the material of the elements in non-uniform model was differently determined by the Hounsfield unit (HU) value of computed tomography (CT) images where the element was located. To investigate the effects of different alveolar bone models on the biomechanical responses of periodontal ligament (PDL), a clinical patient was chosen as the research object, his mandibular canine, PDL and two kinds of alveolar bone models were constructed, and intrusive force of 1 N and moment of 2 Nmm were exerted on the canine along its root direction, respectively, which were used to analyze the hydrostatic stress and the maximal logarithmic principal strain of PDL under different loads. Research results indicated that the mechanical responses of PDL had been affected by alveolar bone models, no matter the canine translation or rotation. Compared to the uniform model, if the alveolar bone was defined as the non-uniform model, the maximal stress and strain of PDL were decreased by 13.13% and 35.57%, respectively, when the canine translation along its root direction; while the maximal stress and strain of PDL were decreased by 19.55% and 35.64%, respectively, when the canine rotation along its root direction. The uniform alveolar bone model will induce orthodontists to choose a smaller orthodontic force. The non-uniform alveolar bone model can better reflect the differences of bone characteristics in the real alveolar bone, and more conducive to obtain accurate analysis results.
Deformation analysis of the periodontium considering the viscoelasticity of the periodontal ligament

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present work was, by means of a combined experimental and numerical approach, to investigate the full-field distributions of displacement, stress and strain, and their evolution with loading in the entire fresh periodontium under an externally applied force.METHODS: In situ intrusion tests were performed to identify the nonlinear, viscoelastic behavior of the periodontal ligament (PDL) of a pig mandible; a digital image correlation method was applied to examine the full-field deformation patterns in the entire periodontium. The finite element (FE) model was created based on the actual anatomic profiles of individual constituents of the tooth structure; the nonlinear and time-dependent viscoelastic properties of the PDL were input into the FE model to fit the numerical computations with the experimental measurements.RESULTS: The nonlinear, viscoelastic behavior of the PDL was identified and characterized quantitatively. The simulation results were validated by the experiments. The results showed the tilting of tooth and the movement of cervical bone toward the mid-tooth in the studied periodontium under vertical compressive loading. Major strain was concentrated in the PDL, with the maxima near to the tooth apexes, at the tooth-root bifurcation and also at the sides of the tooth roots, and maintained a slight rise during holding of the applied displacement. High stress in the tooth was located mainly at the sides of tooth roots, in the bone it was concentrated near the apexes and the root bifurcation, and these stresses decreased gradually during the holding period.SIGNIFICANCE: The combined approach of experiments that apply the digital image correlation method and FE analyses that take into account the nonlinear and time-dependent viscoelasticity of the PDL enables the acquisition of a full picture of detailed, realistic stress/strain fields and deformation patterns of the entire fresh periodontium, being of essence in orthodontics and dentistry.
