Abstract:While pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has demonstrated efficacy in preventing HIV transmission, disparities in access persist in the United States, especially among Hispanic/Latinx sexual minority men (SMM). Language barriers and differences in how Latinx SMM obtain information may impact access to PrEP and HIV prevention. This study used data from the 2021 American Men's Internet Survey (AMIS) to examine differences in communication networks and PrEP use among Latinx SMM by primary language (Spanish vs. English). We examined the associations between Latinx SMM's individual- and meso-level communication networks and PrEP-related outcomes using modified Poisson regression with robust variances. Spanish-speaking Latinx SMM in the study were less likely to test for HIV, be aware of PrEP, and use daily PrEP, compared to English-speaking participants. Sexuality disclosure to a healthcare provider was positively associated with PrEP uptake among all participants and predicted STI testing over the past 12 months among English-speaking Latinx SMM. Findings highlight disparities in PrEP awareness and uptake among Latinx SMM, especially among those whose primary language is Spanish. Addressing these disparities through targeted interventions, including improved communication with healthcare providers, may help facilitate PrEP access and use in this population.

Abstract:SUMMARY The cardiovascular effects of bilateral lesions of the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) were compared with those of subsequent sinoaortic denerration in the same dogs. Destruction of the lateral but not the medial component of the NTS between + 0.5 and 3 mm anterior to the obex produces mild hypertension and tachycardia, not always sustained for more than 2 weeks. Rises in pressure were accompanied by increased lability which was not present regularly in all dogs but correlated with the baseline level of arterial pressure. On the other hand, sinoaortic denervation following lateral NTS lesions produced the first demonstration of fulminant hypertension in the dog, which led to death within hours. These data suggest that, while NTS lesions in the dog probably only partially interrupt central baroreceptor pathways, the addition of sinoaortic denervation completely disrupts baroreceptor inputs to the central nervous system, thus releasing central sympathetic outflow completely from baroreceptor inhibition. Longitudinal predictors of post-exposure prophylaxis awareness among latino sexual minority men in South Florida

Abstract:Biomedical tools for HIV prevention such as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) continue to be underutilized by subgroups experiencing significant HIV inequities. Specifically, factors associated with both PEP awareness and uptake both cross-sectionally and longitudinally are under-researched, despite PEP being a part of the United States' Plan for Ending the HIV Epidemic. The current study examined longitudinal predictors of PEP awareness among Latino sexual minority men (LSMM) living in South Florida. This current study ( N = 290) employed hierarchal linear modeling across three timepoints (baseline, 4-months, 8-months) to assess within-person and between-person effects over time for several psychosocial and structural factors. Most participants (67.5%) reported little to no awareness of PEP at baseline with general PEP awareness growing slightly across the study (60.5% reporting little to no awareness of PEP at 8 months). Results of the final conditional model suggest significant within-person effects of PrEP knowledge ( p = 0.02) and PrEP self-efficacy ( p < 0.001), as well as a significant positive between-person effect of PrEP knowledge ( p < 0.01) on PEP awareness. Between-person HIV knowledge was also a significant predictor in this model ( p = 0.01). This longitudinal analysis of LSMM's PEP awareness indicates that more must be done to increase PEP awareness among this subgroup. Future studies should explore how to build on existing interventions focused on HIV and PrEP knowledge and PrEP self-efficacy to incorporate information about PEP to increase the reach of this effective biomedical HIV prevention tool.

Culturally Tailored Social Media Content to Reach Latinx Immigrant Sexual Minority Men for HIV Prevention: Web-Based Feasibility Study

Abstract:Background Latinx gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men are disproportionately affected by HIV in the United States. As Latinx sexual minority men, particularly those who are foreign-born, experience inequitable access to health services, tailored strategies to engage them for HIV prevention are urgently needed. Objective Our study seeks to address the need for enhanced access to HIV prevention among Latinx immigrant sexual minority men. We developed and piloted a culturally sensitive technology-based campaign focused on HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake. Methods We used a two-phase approach to assess the feasibility of community-informed social media content in engaging Latinx immigrant sexual minority men for HIV testing and PrEP use. First, we conducted three iterative focus groups with 15 Latinx immigrant sexual minority men to refine the HIV prevention content to be piloted on social media platforms. The finalized content was placed on Instagram and Facebook for 9 days in July and September 2021 to individuals who were in Washington State. Individuals who clicked on the content were directed to a website with additional HIV prevention information. Second, we conducted online surveys (n=60) with website visitors that assessed sociodemographic characteristics, barriers to HIV prevention, and HIV-related transmission risk and prevention behaviors. We conducted descriptive analyses to examine the overall profile of survey respondents and determine the feasibility of culturally informed social media content in reaching Latinx immigrant sexual minority men. Results Overall, 739 unique users visited the website during the 9-day period when the social media content was posted on Instagram and Facebook. Our sample included 60 Latinx immigrant sexual minority men who completed the online survey. Participants’ mean age was 30.8 years and more than half (n=34, 57%) completed the survey in Spanish. A quarter of participants indicated that they were unauthorized immigrants and 57% (n=34) reported not having medical insurance. Participants reported, on average, having 6 different sexual partners in the last 6 months. Nearly a third of respondents had not tested for HIV in the last 6 months. Only about half (n=32, 53%) of respondents had used PrEP in the last 12 months. Conclusions Community-driven social media and web-based strategies are feasible ways to engage Latinx immigrant sexual minority men who may traditionally lack access to HIV prevention information and services due to structural and social barriers. The results highlight that culturally relevant social media and web-based outreach strategies that are informed and developed by the community can reach Latinx immigrant sexual minority men for HIV prevention. Findings underscore the need to examine the effectiveness of social media content in promoting HIV testing and PrEP uptake in marginalized Latinx populations.

Abstract:Introduction: Sustained HIV viral suppression is the ultimate goal of HIV treatment. African American/Black and Latino persons with HIV (PWH) in the United States are less likely than their White peers to achieve and sustain viral suppression. To address these disparities, we developed a "low-touch" behavioral intervention drawing on motivational interviewing and behavioral economics. The intervention had three main components: (1) a motivational interviewing counseling session, (2) 16 weeks of automated text messages and quiz questions about HIV management, where participants earned points by answering quiz questions, and 3) a lottery prize, based on viral suppression status, number of points earned, and chance (max. $275). Materials and methods: The intervention was tested in a pre-test/post-test design. The present pilot study used mixed methods to explore the intervention's feasibility, acceptability, impact, and ways it could be improved. Participants engaged in a baseline assessment, qualitative interview, and two structured follow-up assessments over an 8-month period, and provided laboratory reports to document HIV viral load. We carried out descriptive quantitative analyses. Qualitative data were analyzed using a directed content analysis approach. Data integration was carried out using the joint display method. Findings: Participants ( N = 40) were 50 years old, on average (SD = 11), and approximately half (58%) were male. Close to two-thirds (68%) were African American/Black and 32% were Latino. Participants were diagnosed with HIV 22 years ago on average (SD = 8). The intervention was feasible (e.g., mean number of quiz questions answered = 13/16) and highly acceptable. While not powered to assess efficacy, the proportion with suppressed HIV viral load increased from baseline to follow-up (46% participants at the first, 52% participants at the second follow-up evidenced HIV viral suppression). In qualitative analyses, perspectives included that overall, the intervention was acceptable and useful, it was distinct from other programs, lottery prizes were interesting and appreciated but not sufficient to motivate behavior change, and the structure of lottery prizes was not sufficiently clear. Regarding data integration, qualitative data shed light on and extended quantitative results, and added richness and context. Conclusion: This low-touch intervention approach is sufficiently promising to warrant refinement and study in future research.

Abstract:Acute cardiac graft rejection after transplantation, the diagnosis of which is based on the findings of endomyocardial biopsy, is associated with a reduction in coronary reserve due to abnormalities of the microcirculation. But this reduction in coronary reserve cause silent myocardial ischaemia (SMI)? In order to assess the frequency of SMI and ventricular arrhythmias during rejection, 53 consecutive Holter recordings were performed in 32 patients (28 men, 4 women, average age 47 +/- 11 years) 11 months after transplantation and within 24 hours of endomyocardial biopsy. The recorder which was used (Monitor One TC) analysed the ST segment in 2 leads in real time: ST segment depression of more than 1 mm lasting over 40 ms, 0.08 s after the J point were considered to be diagnostic of myocardial ischaemia. Although the frequency of SMI is low and not specific for cardiac rejection, its duration was twice as long (80 mn vs 38 mn) in this condition. On the other hand, ventricular arrhythmias are common in cardiac rejection and correlated with its severity according to Billingham's classification (VES p = 0.045; doublets p = 0.035; non-sustained VT p = 0.006).

Abstract:We describe a 12-element distributed feedback laser array, with 10-/spl mu/m pitch, covering a 36-nm tuning range, and having an integrated heater on each element. The novel heater design heats just the active laser yet requires only one additional contact for the entire array. Each individual laser element can be temperature tuned more than 3.2 nm in under 100 /spl mu/s using its heater.

Abstract:Subjects suffering from memory disorders associated with Korsakoff's syndrome were treated with noradrenergic and cholinergic drugs in two phases. In the acute phase, tests of short- and long-term memory were conducted shortly after the administration of methylphenidate, physostigmine, an oral placebo, and an intramuscular placebo. In the chronic phase, the memory tests were given after the subjects had been administered each of the following for 1-week periods: methylphenidate, choline chloride, methylphenidate plus choline chloride, and an oral placebo. Significant improvements were seen in long-term memory scores of patients receiving chronic methylphenidate treatment. Significant improvement was not found in short-term memory measures with any of the drug treatments.
Adapting mHealth Interventions (PrEPmate and DOT Diary) to Support PrEP Retention in Care and Adherence Among English and Spanish-Speaking Men Who Have Sex With Men and Transgender Women in the United States: Formative Work and Pilot Randomized Trial

Abstract:Background: A growing number of mobile health (mHealth) technologies are being developed to support HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence and persistence; however, most tools have focused on men who have sex with men (MSM), and few are available in Spanish. To maximize the potential impact of these tools in reducing gender and racial/ethnic disparities and promoting health equity, mHealth tools tailored to Spanish-speaking people and transgender women are critically needed. Objective: The aim of this study is to adapt and tailor 2 mHealth technologies, PrEPmate and DOT Diary, to support daily PrEP adherence and persistence among Spanish-speaking MSM and English- and Spanish-speaking transgender women and to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of these tools. Methods: PrEPmate, an interactive, bidirectional, text messaging intervention that promotes personalized communication between PrEP users and providers, and DOT Diary, a mobile app that promotes self-management of PrEP use and sexual health through an integrated electronic pill-taking and sexual activity diary, were previously developed for English-speaking MSM. We conducted 3 focus groups with 15 English- and Spanish-speaking transgender women and MSM in San Francisco and Miami to culturally tailor these tools for these priority populations. We then conducted a 1-month technical pilot among 21 participants to assess the usability and acceptability of the adapted interventions and optimize the functionality of these tools. Results: Participants in focus groups liked the "human touch" of text messages in PrEPmate and thought it would be helpful for scheduling appointments and asking questions. They liked the daily reminder messages, especially the fun facts, gender affirmations, and transgender history topics. Participants recommended changes to tailor the language and messages for Spanish-speaking and transgender populations. For DOT Diary, participants liked the adherence tracking and protection level feedback and thought the calendar functions were easy to use. Based on participant recommendations, we tailored language within the app for Spanish-speaking MSM and transgender women, simplified the sexual diary, and added motivational badges. In the technical pilot of the refined tools, mean System Usability Scale scores were 81.2/100 for PrEPmate and 76.4/100 for DOT Diary (P=.48), falling in the "good" to "excellent" range, and mean Client Satisfaction Questionnaire scores were 28.6 and 28.3 for PrEPmate and DOT Diary, respectively (maximum possible score=32). Use of both tools was high over the 1-month pilot (average of 10.5 messages received from each participant for PrEPmate; average of 17.6 times accessing the DOT Diary app), indicating good feasibility for both tools. Conclusions: Using a user-centered design approach, we culturally tailored PrEPmate and DOT Diary to support daily PrEP use among Spanish-speaking MSM and English- and Spanish-speaking transgender women. Our positive findings in a technical pilot support further testing of these mHealth interventions in an upcoming comparative effectiveness trial.
Feasibility and acceptability of SEPA+PrEP: An HIV prevention intervention to increase PrEP knowledge, initiation, and persistence among cisgender heterosexual Hispanic women

Abstract:The HIV epidemic disproportionately affects Hispanics in the U.S., with Hispanic women (HW) accounting for 18% of new HIV diagnoses in 2019 despite comprising only 16% of the female population. The imbalance of power related to cultural values and HW’s lack of knowledge and low perception of risk for HIV interferes with prevention efforts (e.g., condom use, HIV testing, and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis [PrEP]). It is estimated that in 2019, only 10% of women in the U.S. who could benefit from PrEP were given prescriptions for it. This number is estimated to be significantly lower among HW. PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV, reducing the risk of acquiring HIV from sexual activity by about 99%. To respond to this need, we developed SEPA+PrEP, a biobehavioral HIV prevention intervention that adapted and integrated SEPA (Salud/Health, Educación/Education, Prevención/Prevention, Autocuidado/Self-Care), an empirically validated behavioral HIV prevention intervention, with the evidence-based biomedical strategy of PrEP. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of SEPA+PrEP among cisgender heterosexual Hispanic women (HW). We used a mixed methods approach to gather data from 44 HW living in the City of Homestead and its surrounding communities in Miami-Dade County, Florida. None of the participants knew about PrEP prior to participating in the study, and the majority (70.5%, n = 23) had not used condoms when engaging in vaginal sex during the previous three months. Overall, study results suggest that SEPA+PrEP is an acceptable and feasible intervention to prevent HIV among HW, with a focus on PrEP knowledge, initiation, and maintenance.

Abstract:Black cisgender sexually minoritized men (SMM) and transgender women (TW) are subgroups at highest risk of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the US. We sought to identify factors facilitating continued conversations – social reinforcement – surrounding HIV/STI prevention among this subgroup. Participants were recruited in Chicago from 2018 to 2019 from community health spaces. Participants provided information about themselves (level 2) and ⩽5 confidants (level 1). We used multinomial multilevel modeling to identify associations with HIV/STI prevention conversation frequency. A total of 370 participants provided information on 987 confidants (mean = 2.6). We found significantly positive associations between having biweekly or more often HIV/STI prevention conversations and a confidant being a kin family member, older by 15 years or more, racially homophilous, and emotionally close. Future interventions should harness social networks by including components that consider racial homophily, respect for elders, and strong ties, in addition to applying kin family systems interventions approaches and decreasing stigma surrounding HIV/STIs.

Using High-Impact HIV Prevention to Achieve the National HIV/AIDS Strategic Goals in Miami-Dade County, Florida: A Case Study

Abstract:: In response to the release of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed the "Enhanced Comprehensive HIV Prevention Planning" project, which provided support to health departments in 12 Metropolitan Statistical Areas with the highest AIDS prevalence to strengthen local HIV programs. We describe a case study of how 1 Metropolitan Statistical Area, Miami-Dade County, developed and implemented a locally tailored plan. Examples include actions to reinforce local partnerships and identify neighborhoods with highest unmet needs, an improved condom distribution system to assist local HIV care providers, collaboration with local stakeholders to establish a new walk-in center for transgender client needs, and overcoming incompatibilities in health department and Ryan White Program computer record systems to facilitate faster and more efficient patient services. These examples show how jurisdictions both within Florida and elsewhere can create low-cost and sustainable activities tailored to improve local HIV prevention needs.
Effects of unsaturated fatty acids in phospholipids on the in vitro activation of the lipoprotein lipase and the triglyceride lipase.

Abstract:The effects of different types of phospholipids on the lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and on the hepatic triglyceride lipase (TGLH) were studied by comparative in vitro incubation. Substrates were prepared by homogenization in glycerol of 3H-labelled triolein plus phosphatidylcholine (either dipalmitoyl PC, or ovolecithin or highly unsaturated PC, EPL Nattermann). Enzymes were obtained from rat adipose tissue, myocardium, lungs and liver and human adipose tissue and post-heparin plasma, respectively. The enzyme activities as determined in mmol/ml medium showed differences of highly statistical significance (p less than 0.001). In any tissue investigated the enzyme activities of LPL or TGLH followed the sequence: highly unsaturated PC (EPL) greater than ovo-lecithin greater than dipalmitoyl-lecithin. This was true for the enzymes of rat and human origin as well. It was concluded that the observed LPL and TGLH activation may account for the beneficial therapeutic effects of highly unsaturated phosphatidylcholine (EPL) in human hyperglyceridemias.
"Why Not Just go on PrEP?": A Study to Inform Implementation of an HIV Prevention Intervention Among Hispanic/Latino Men Who Have Sex With Men in the Northeastern United States

Abstract:Background: Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective biological option for HIV prevention yet persistent disparities in PrEP uptake and retention exist among Hispanic/Latino men who have sex with men (MSM). We evaluated barriers and facilitators to PrEP care among Hispanic/Latino MSM at risk for and living with HIV. Setting: A small urban setting in the Northeastern United States. Methods: This was a mixed-methods, exploratory, sequential, qualitative and quantitative pilot study among Latino MSM at-risk and/or living with HIV across (1) semistructured qualitative interviews (N = 15) and (2) cross-sectional survey (N = 98). Results: Participants reported a diverse range of sexual identities, HIV statuses, and PrEP statuses. Qualitative participants described feelings of isolation in both Hispanic/Latino and queer communities that made it challenging to learn about HIV prevention or PrEP from peers. Participants in the survey indicated that they would be more inclined to uptake PrEP if PrEP were offered in primary care settings (n = 61; 62.2%); there were specific LGBTQ+ affirming medical settings (n = 36; 36.7%); and/or they could meet other people who are currently on PrEP and sharing experiences online (n = 46; 46.9%) or in person (n = 38; 38.8%). Findings were organized to reflect determinants and implementation strategies that could be used to improve PrEP uptake among this population. Conclusions: This mixed-methods study identified several challenges and opportunities for increasing the reach of PrEP to Hispanic/Latino MSM. These findings should be used to inform tailored implementation strategies to promote PrEP uptake among this at-risk yet currently underserved population.

Abstract:Background: Research has shown that integrating community health workers (CHWs) into the formal health care system can improve outcomes for people living with HIV, yet there is limited literature exploring this framework among marginalized minority populations. Objective: Herein, we discuss the feasibility of a clinic-embedded CHW strategy to improve antiretroviral therapy adherence among Black people living with HIV in Miami-Dade County, Florida, a designated priority region for the US Department of Health and Human Services' Ending the HIV Epidemic Initiative. Methods: From December 2022 to September 2023, three CHWs were trained and integrated into the hospital workflow to provide support as members of the clinical team. Ten Black adults with an HIV viral load over 200 copies/mL were enrolled to received 3 months of CHW support focused on navigating the health system and addressing poor social determinants of health. Intervention feasibility was based on 4 criteria: recruitment rate, demographic composition, study fidelity, and qualitative feedback on CHW perceptions. Results: Participants were recruited at a rate of 5.7 participants per month, with the sample evenly distributed between men and women. Retention was moderately strong, with 7 (70%) of the 10 participants attending more than 75% of CHW sessions. Qualitative feedback reflected CHW perceptions on clinical interactions and intervention length. Conclusions: Outcomes indicate that a clinic-integrated CHW approach is a feasible and acceptable methodology to address adverse social determinants and improve HIV treatment adherence. By offering targeted social and clinical support, CHWs may be a promising solution to achieve sustained viral suppression and care engagement for Black people living with HIV.

Abstract:Orange juice is a rich source of flavonoids considered beneficial to cardiovascular health in humans. The objective of this study was to analyze the pharmacokinetics of the main flavanone glycosides, hesperidin and narirutin, in humans after the consumption of two styles of orange juice, fresh-squeezed (FOJ) and commercially processed (POJ), differing in their amounts of soluble and insoluble forms of these compounds. Healthy human subjects consumed 11.5 mL/kg body weight of FOJ, and after an interval of 30 days, consumed the same quantity of POJ. The results showed that there were no significant differences in the Tmax of the pharmacokinetic curves for the metabolites of hesperidin and narirutin following the consumption of the two styles of juices, and corrected for differences in doses in the POJ and FOJ, there were also no significant differences in the AUC and Cmax values and percent absorption of these compounds.

Abstract:Low adherence to preventative medications against life-long health conditions is a major contributor to global morbidity and mortality. We implemented a pilot randomized controlled trial in Mexico to measure the extent to which conditional economic incentives help male sex workers increase their adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention. We followed n = 110 male sex workers over 6 months. At each quarterly visit (at months 0, 3, and 6), all workers received a 20, 0, respectively. Six-month pooled effects of incentives on PrEP adherence were analyzed using population-averaged gamma generalized estimating equation models. We estimated heterogeneous treatment effects by sex worker characteristics. The incentive intervention led to a 28.7% increase in hair antiretroviral concentration levels over 6 months consistent with increased PrEP adherence ( p = 0.05). The effect of incentives on PrEP adherence was greater for male sex workers who were street-based (vs. internet) workers ( p < 0.10). These pilot findings suggest that modest conditional economic incentives could be effective, at scale, for improving PrEP adherence among male sex workers, and should be tested in larger implementation trials. Peer Influence on Motivation to Use Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Latino Sexual Minority Men in Miami, Florida: A Network Autocorrelation Model

Abstract:Despite the availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), Latino sexual minority men (LSMM) continue to experience disparities in PrEP uptake and subsequently, HIV vulnerability. Social network norms are an underutilized solution to increase PrEP uptake. We used a peer influence model (network autocorrelation model) to examine the role of social network descriptive norms (i.e., actual behaviors) surrounding PrEP use. A total of 11 sociocentric networks of 13 friends (n = 143 LSMM) were recruited into our study from 2018 to 2019 in South Florida. Most participants were in PrEP pre-contemplation (n = 44), and almost one-third of our sample were using PrEP (n = 38). Three network autocorrelation models were estimated using an empirically informed Bayesian analysis. We found a positive association between participants' Motivational PrEP Cascade (MPC) position and their network members' (friends') cascade position based on three different measures of connection even when accounting for PrEP knowledge: friendship (ρ = 0.22; 95% CIa = 0.01-0.42), emotional closeness (ρ = 0.24; 95% CI = 0.03-0.44), and frequency of interaction (ρ = 0.22; CI = 0.03-0.42). Our findings highlight that an individual's progress in the MPC may be influenced by their network members' progress in the MPC, suggesting that LSMM using PrEP may serve as role models to their peers for PrEP use due to descriptive norms. Our findings further suggest that PrEP interventions for LSMM along the MPC can be implemented at the social network level.

Abstract:The majority of new HIV infections in the US occur among sexual minority men (SMM) with older adolescent and emerging adult SMM at the highest risk. Those in relationships face unique HIV prevention challenges. Existing sexual HIV transmission risk interventions for male couples often encounter implementation challenges and engaging younger SMM early in relationships may be particularly difficult. This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated the acceptibility and feasibility of We Test HIV testing – a behavioral health intervention tailored for younger SMM in realtionships – and generated preliminary estimates of effect size. The intervention comprises two adjunct moduls – video-based communication skills training as well as communication goal setting and planning – delivered in conjunction with routine HIV testing and counseling in individual or dyadic formats. A sample of 69 SMM aged 17 to 24 were recruited online. Following baseline assessment, youth were randomized to receive either the experimental, We Test , intervention or routine HIV testing (the control condition). Follow-up assessments were completed 3 and 6 months post-baseline. Results suggested the study was feasible and the individually delivered format was acceptible. We Test HIV testing was associated with significant improvements in communication skills. In addition, youth who remained in a relationship experienced an increase in communal coping to reduce HIV infection risk and relationship power. While groups did not differ with respect to condomless anal sex with casual partners, these psycho-social constructs (communication, communal coping with HIV prevention, and relationship power) may serve as mediators of intervention effects on sexual risk reduction in a larger study.

Abstract:Programs to help people living with HIV/AIDS practice safer sex are needed to prevent transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. We sought to assess the impact of SafeTalk, a multicomponent motivational interviewing-based safer sex program, on HIV-infected patients’ risky sexual behavior. We enrolled sexually active adult HIV-infected patients from one of three clinical sites in North Carolina and randomized them to receive the 4-session SafeTalk intervention versus a hearthealthy attention-control. There was no significant difference in the proportion of people having unprotected sex between the two arms at enrollment. SafeTalk significantly reduced the number of unprotected sex acts with at-risk partners from baseline, while in controls the number of unprotected sex acts increased. Motivational interviewing can provide an effective, flexible prevention intervention for a heterogeneous group of people living with HIV.
