Abstract:Introduction: Fear of disease progression (FoP) has been identified as one of the most prevalent unmet needs among breast cancer patients in recent years. The aim of this study was to examine FoP in patients with breast cancer and explore its associations with demographic and clinical characteristics, self-management efficacy, and family functioning. We also aimed to create a clinically-relevant prediction model based off of these factors (i.e., a "nomogram") to help identify patients' probability of experiencing high FoP. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of breast cancer in patients at the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University was conducted from June 2023 to February 2024. The study included the Demographic and Clinical Characteristics Questionnaire, the Fear of Disease Progression Scale (FoP-Q-SF), the Chinese Self-Management Efficacy Scale for Cancer Patients (C-SUPPH), and the Family Care Index Questionnaire (APGAR). Data analysis included descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. A nomogram was constructed based on multiple regression results and the model performance was evaluated. Results: A total of 151 breast cancer patients were enrolled in the study. The mean (standard deviation) FoP score of the patients was 35.87 ± 9.24. The average score of C-SUPPH was 96.97 ± 17.29, and the average score of APGAR was 6.74 ± 2.98. Pearson correlation analysis showed that FoP was negatively correlated with self-management efficacy (r = -0.544, p < 0.01) and family functioning (r = -0.730, p < 0.01). Multiple regression analysis showed that age (B = -4.038), self-management efficacy (B = -0.085) and family functioning (B = -1.972) were significantly related to FoP, and together explained 36% of FoP variation (R 2 = 0.360, F = 20.50, p < 0.001). The nomogram of these variables showed satisfactory prediction performance [the Bootstrap Correction Consistency Index (C-index) = 0.872]. According to previous studies, a C-index of >0.70 indicates that the model is acceptable. Conclusion: We found that greater fear of cancer progression (FoP) was associated with younger age, lower self-management efficacy and poorer family functioning in breast cancer patients. Based on these variables, our exploratory prediction model should be further investigated in order to help identify breast cancer patients who may be at highest risk of experiencing high FoP.

Abstract:Objective Cancer‐related fatigue (CRF) and fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) are two common concerns experienced by cancer survivors. However, the relationship between these two concerns is poorly understood, and whether CRF and FCR influence each other over time is unclear. Methods Data were from a national, prospective, longitudinal study, the American Cancer Society's Study of Cancer Survivors‐I (SCS‐I). Surveys were completed by 1395 survivors of 10 different cancer types at three time‐points, including assessment 1.3 years (T1), 2.2 years (T2) and 8.8 years (T3) following their cancer diagnosis. CRF was assessed using the fatigue‐inertia subscale of the Profile of Mood States, and FCR by the FCR subscale of the Cancer Problems in Living Scale. Multiple group random intercepts cross‐lagged panel models investigated prospective associations between CRF and FCR. Results For younger participants (at or below median age of 55 years, n = 697), CRF at T1 and T2 marginally and significantly predicted FCR at T2 and T3, respectively, but no lagged effects of FCR on subsequent CRF were observed. Cross‐lagged effects were not observed for survivors over 55 years of age. Conclusion Both CRF and FCR are debilitating side effects of cancer and its treatments. Given that CRF may be predictive of FCR, it possible that early detection and intervention for CRF could contribute to lowering FCR severity.

Abstract:Among patients with stage‐IV breast cancer, satisfaction with family emotional support, ECOG score and symptom burden play key roles in the fear of progression (FoP). Objective To assess fear of progression (FoP)'s relationship with symptom burden and disease and social/family factors, as well as, determine the status of FoP in women with stage‐IV breast cancer in Shandong, China. Methods Two hundred and sixteen women were recruited from the department of breast cancer internal medicine, Shandong Cancer Hospital and Institute. Data for this observational study were collected between October 2020 and January 2021 using the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory, the Fear of Progression Questionnaire‐Short Form (FoP‐Q‐SF) and a participant information scale. SPSS 23.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results After excluding invalid responses, the data of 200 participants were analysed. The average total FoP‐Q‐SF score was 29.39 ± 9.39 (95% confidence interval, 21.81–27.64). The FoP level among the participants was relatively low. For disease and social/family factors, FoP statistically significantly differed by satisfaction with family emotional support and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) score. The ECOG score was positively correlated with FoP. Furthermore, symptom burden was positively correlated with FoP. Conclusions Among patients with stage‐IV breast cancer, satisfaction with family emotional support, ECOG score and symptom burden play key roles in FoP. Interventions, including providing appropriate emotional support from family, improving physical fitness and relieving symptom burden, must be considered in future studies, which may improve patients' overall physical and mental status and provide a supportive therapeutic environment.

Longitudinal patterns in fear of cancer progression in patients with rare, advanced cancers undergoing comprehensive tumour genomic profiling

Abstract:Introduction: Fear of cancer progression (FCP) impacts quality of life and is a prevalent unmet need in patients diagnosed with advanced cancer, particularly as treatment options are reduced. We aimed to identify longitudinal patterns in FCP over 6 months in patients with advanced cancer receiving comprehensive tumour genomic profiling (CTGP) results, and their correlates. Methods: Patients with pathologically confirmed metastatic disease (∼70% rare cancers) receiving or post their last line of standard therapy completed questionnaires at T0 (prior to CTGP), T1 (immediately post CTGP results) and T2 (2 months later). Results: High stable (N = 52; 7.3%) and low/moderate stable (N = 56; 7.8%) FCP patterns over time typified the largest participant groups (N = 721). Those with an immediately actionable variant versus a non-actionable variant (p = 0.045), with higher FCP (p < 0.001), and lower Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-being (FACIT-Sp) scores (p = 0.006) at T0, had higher FCP at T1. Those with higher FCP at T0 (p < 0.001) and at T1 (p < 0.001), lower FACIT-Sp scores at T1 (p = 0.001), lower education (p = 0.031) and female gender (p = 0.027) had higher FCP at T2. Discussion: Routine screening for psychological/spiritual characteristics in those about to undergo CTGP may help to identify patients who may benefit from closer monitoring and provision of psychosocial support. Future studies should explore interventions to best address FCP in this vulnerable group, as interventions assessed to date have almost all addressed patients with curative cancers or newly diagnosed advanced disease.
Modification of Canine Cyclic Hematopoiesis by Endotoxin

Abstract:Summary Studies were performed with three grey collies to determine whether a protracted demand for neutrophils resulting from daily endotoxin injections would influence their cyclic hematopoiesis. In each case, the characteristic profound oscillations of the neutrophil blood count were eliminated during a 1 - or 2-mo course of endotoxin treatment and were restored rather promptly upon cessation of treatment. In contrast, reticulocyte cycling generally tended to persist, although at a reduced rate. However, during the immediate postendotoxin period, there was a sharp rise in reticulocyte count without a readily discernible cycling pattern in the two grey collies that had Received the higher average daily endotoxin doses. Thus, the reticulocyte data did not conform to expectation based on the assumption that a peripheral neutrophil feedback provided the alternating competitive pressure for production of one or another blood cell type by a functionally restricted stem cell pool. It is possible that cyclic hematopoiesis in the grey collie may be inherent in the nature of the stem cell defect per se, e.g., an abnormality of the mechanism governing the transition to neutrophil commitment could lead to an oscillating committed stem cell compartment with a resulting regularly recurring competition for pluripotential stem cells. The effects of endotoxin in the grey collie can be understood within this postulated framework.
Evaluation of two group therapies to reduce fear of progression in cancer patients

Abstract:Purpose: This paper aims to evaluate the effects of two psychotherapeutic interventions on dysfunctional fear of progression (FoP) in cancer patients and to investigate illness-specific influences. Methods: One hundred seventy-four cancer patients were recruited from two rehabilitation clinics and randomly assigned to either a four-session cognitive-behavioral group therapy or a supportive-experiential group therapy. The main outcome criterion was FoP that was assessed with the Fear of Progression Questionnaire (FoP-Q) directly before (T1) and after (T2) the intervention, as well as 3 (T3) and 12 months (T4) after discharge. Secondary outcomes were anxiety, depression, and quality of life that were assessed with the following questionnaires: Questions on Life Satisfaction, Questionnaire for General Health Status, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Patients from the control group (n = 91) who received treatment as usual were recruited 1 year later with the same inclusion criteria and assessed with the FoP-Q at T1, T2, and T4. Results: Analyses showed a significant main effect for time and a significant interaction for group x time for the main outcome variable. FoP decreased significantly over time in both intervention groups in contrast to the control group that showed only short-term improvements. The interventions were also effective in improving secondary outcomes except general life satisfaction. Analyses of cancer specific influences on FoP indicated a significant influence of disease status, i.e., patients with metastases and recurrence of cancer gained most from the interventions. Conclusions: Fear of progression, one of the main sources of distress for cancer patients, can be reduced with short psychotherapeutic interventions.
Postpartum Vaginal Stenosis Due to Chemical Vaginitis.

Abstract:Acquired vaginal stenosis is a rare obstructing anomaly, which can be caused by use of chemicals in the vagina. A 21-year-old gravida 1 para 1, presented with secondary amenorrhea and inability to have sexual intercourse, after normal spontaneous vaginal delivery complicated by post partum bleeding. The delivery was conducted by untrained traditional birth attendant at home. The wash cloth soaked with caustic soda was packed in the patient's vagina and was left in situ for 10 days, which ultimately led to the severe scarring and stenosis of the vagina. Patient underwent surgical management and the extensive vaginal adhesions were excised and a patent vagina was reconstructed. Patient then reported successful vaginal intercourse without dyspareunia. Post partum vaginal stenosis due to chemical vaginitis is rare. These cases can be prevented by adequate training of untrained health care workers.
Personal identity and the schizophrenic process: an integration.

Abstract:In this paper we explore the relation between theories of self, particularly identity theory, and the schizophrenic process. A fundamental assumption in identity theory is that a person's self includes a hierarchically organized set of identities. When an individual's set of identities is limited in range and/or diffusely organized he/she is thought to be at risk for schizophrenia. The onset and relapse of schizophrenic episodes are assumed to occur when important identities are negated. Implications of identity theory for integrating extant conceptions of schizophrenia are discussed. Also discussed are the effects of medication in establishing a patient identity and the role of the patient identity in preventing psychotic relapse.

Abstract:Background: Fear of disease progression (FoP) is among the most prevalent and major psychological burdens breast cancer patients encounter. Excessive FoP may result in serious adverse effects for patients. FoP in breast cancer patients has gained attention recently; however, its prevalence in China is unknown. Objectives: This meta-analysis and systematic review aimed to assess the overall FoP among Chinese breast cancer patients to make recommendations for treatment and care. Methods: Systematic search databases included PubMed, EMbase, The Cohrane Library, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO and 4 Chinese databases (Wan Fang Data, CBM, VIP and CNKI). The retrieval time ranged from the database's establishment to March 20, 2023. After two researchers independently evaluated the literature, retrieved information, and assessed the risk of bias for the included literature, Stata 15.1 software was used to conduct a meta-analysis. Results: A total of 37 moderate or high-quality studies involving 9,689 breast cancer patients were included. Meta-analysis showed that the pooled mean score of FoP for Chinese breast cancer patients was 33.84 [95% CI (31.91, 35.77)], prediction interval (21.57 ~ 46.11). The subgroup study found that FoP levels varied among breast cancer patients of different regions, ages, educational levels, marital statuses, residences, illness stages, and disease statuses. Conclusion: Breast cancer patients have higher FoP scores. Healthcare workers should be concerned. We expect that more relevant research will be undertaken and more effective interventions will be developed. Patients can manage their illness and improve their quality of life by reducing their fears. Abstract:PURPOSE: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a highly prevalent and debilitating symptom reported by breast cancer survivors (BCS). CRF has been associated with the co-occurrence of anxiety, depression, poor sleep quality, cognitive impairment, which are collectively termed as psychoneurophysiological (PNP) symptoms. CRF and these PNP symptoms are often reported during and after treatment with long-lasting distress. It is unclear how CRF and these PNP symptoms influence each other. This study aimed to explore predictive factors (i.e., PNP symptoms and social-demographic factors) of CRF, and test exploratory path models of the relationships of CRF with PNP symptoms (depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, pain, and cognitive function) in BCS.METHODS: This paper is part of a larger descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study. Validated and reliable instruments assessed CRF, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, pain, and cognitive function. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, multiple linear regression models, and path analysis were employed.RESULTS: Patients (N = 373) who reported less bodily pain had worst CRF (r = -0.45, p < .01). Significant predictors of CRF included depression, sleep disorder, bodily pain, perceived cognitive ability, and dispositional (state) optimism. Depression alone accounted for 31% of the variance in CRF. An integrative path model with bodily pain, neuropathic pain, CRF, and depression showed a good fit across different indices (CFI = 0.993, RMSEA = 0.047, 90% CI 0-0.12, SRMR = 0.027).CONCLUSIONS: This study identified significant predictors of CRF and revealed a good fit mediation model with significant pathways for CRF, suggesting that a common etiology may underpin the co-occurrence of CRF with PNP symptoms (pain and depression). However, further investigation with longitudinal design is necessary to explore the causal relationships of these symptoms. Evidence-based strategies/interventions are needed to reduce or eliminate the burden of these symptoms on the lives of BCS.

Abstract:As cancer patients often suffer from fear of cancer progression (FoP), valid screening for FoP is of high relevance. The aims of this study were to test psychometric properties of two FoP questionnaires, to determine their relationship to other anxiety-related constructs, and to analyze the impact of sociodemographic and clinical factors on the FoP. Our sample consisted of n = 1733 patients with mixed cancer diagnoses. For measuring FoP, the Fear of Progression questionnaire (FoP-Q-12) and the Concerns About Cancer Recurrence Questionnaire (CARQ-4) were used. The mean scores of the FoP-Q-12 and the CARQ-4 were 30.0 ± 10.4 and 16.1 ± 10.8, respectively, indicating relatively high levels of FoP. Both questionnaires showed excellent internal consistency coefficients, α = 0.895 and α = 0.915, respectively. The correlation between the two FoP questionnaires was r = 0.72. Female patients reported more FoP than male patients (d = 0.84 and d = 0.54, respectively). There was a nonlinear age dependency of FoP, with an increase found in the age range from 18 to 50 years and a decrease in the older age range. Radiation, chemotherapy, and antibody therapy, but not surgery, lead to an increase in FoP. Both questionnaires show good psychometric properties and can be recommended for use in an oncological routine. Female patients and patients in the middle-age range deserve special attention from healthcare providers.

Abstract:Introduction In recent years, fear of disease progression (FoP) has become one of the most common psychological problems in cancer patients. However, there are fewer studies on the FoP in patients with gastrointestinal tumors. We aimed to assess the level of FoP in patients with gastrointestinal tumors and analyze the factors related to FoP. We also aimed to examine the relationship among loneliness, hope and FoP in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted on three Grade A hospitals in southwestern China from November 2021 to July 2022. The demographic and clinical characteristics questionnaire, Fear of Disease Progression Scale (FoP-Q-SF), Cancer Loneliness Scale (CLS), and Herth Hope Index (HHI) were included in this study. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, independent samples t -tests, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple linear regression analysis. Results In total, 245 gastrointestinal cancer patients participated in this study. The average (standard deviation) FoP score in patients was 32.94 ± 10.64. The average score of CLS was 17.65 ± 6.71, and that for the HHI was 31.27 ± 7.73. Pearson correlation analysis showed that FoP was negatively significant correlated with hope level ( r = −0.522) and FoP was positively significant correlated with loneliness ( r = 0.545). Linear regression analysis showed that educational level, age, living condition, hope, and loneliness were the significant predictors of FoP and explained 53.10% of the variability in FoP ( F = 16.372). Conclusion Findings highlight the need to strengthen attention to FoP in gastrointestinal cancer patients. Our study showed that gastrointestinal cancer patients who have a high school education, are age 45 to 59, live alone, high level of loneliness, and low level of hope have higher FoP. Medical staff should enhance clinical screening of FoP and consider the formulation of relevant interventions for high-risk groups to reduce loneliness among patients, raise their hope level, and reduce their FoP.

Abstract:Li‐Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a rare autosomal dominant cancer predisposition syndrome associated with a highly elevated lifetime cancer risk. This and the recommended intense surveillance program represent a large psychological burden on families. In order to develop targeted psychosocial interventions, we conducted a needs assessment. Adults (≥18 years) with LFS were included via regular hospital visits and online support groups and newsletters. Individuals filled out a questionnaire addressing among others: fear of progression (FoP‐questionnaire, short‐form), health‐related quality of life (HRQoL, Short‐Form Health Survey‐12), distress (National Comprehensive Cancer Network distress thermometer), perceived cancer risk, and aspects of surveillance adherence. Collecting data over a 14‐month period (March 2020 – June 2021), 70 adults were recruited (female = 58, 82.9%; mean age = 41.53 years). With mean mental component scores (MCS) of 42.28 (SD = 10.79), and physical component scores (PCS) of 48.83 (SD = 10.46), HRQoL was low in 34.8% (physical) and 59.4% (mental) of individuals when applying a mean cut‐off of 45.4 (PCS) and 47.5 (MCS) to indicate poor HRQoL. High levels of FoP and distress were present in 68.6% and 69.1% of the participants, respectively. Abstract:PurposeCancer-related fatigue (CRF) is the most prevalent and distressing symptom among cancer patients and survivors. However, research on its prevalence and related disability in the post-treatment survivorship period remains limited. We sought to describe the occurrence of CRF within three time points in the post-treatment survivorship trajectory.MethodsA self-administered mail-based questionnaire which included the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Fatigue (FACT-F) and the World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 was sent to three cohorts of disease-free breast, prostate or colorectal cancer survivors (6–18 months; 2–3 years; and 5–6 years post-treatment). Clinical information was extracted from chart review. Frequencies of significant fatigue by diagnostic group and time cohorts were studied and compared. Multivariate logistic regressions were conducted to examine the associations between CRF and demographic, clinical, and psychosocial variables.ResultsOne thousand two hundred ninety-four questionnaire packages were returned (63 % response rate). A total of 29 % (95 % CI [27 % to 32 %]) of the sample reported significant fatigue (FACT-F ≤34), and this was associated with much higher levels of disability (p < 0.0001). Breast (40 % [35 % to 44 %]) and colorectal (33 % [27 % to 38 %]) cancer survivors had significantly higher rates of fatigue compared with the prostate group (17 % [14 % to 21 %]) (p < 0.0001). Fatigue levels did not differ between the three time cohorts. The main factors associated with CRF included physical symptom burden, depression, and co-morbidity (AUC, 0.919 [0.903 to 0.936]).ConclusionsClinically relevant levels of CRF are present in approximately 1/3 of cancer survivors up to 6 years post-treatment, and this is associated with high levels of disability.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsClinicians need to be aware of the chronicity of CRF and assess for it routinely in medical practice. While there is no gold standard treatment, non-pharmacological interventions with established efficacy can reduce its severity and possibly minimize its disabling impact on patient functioning. Attention must be paid to the co-occurrence and need for possible treatment of depression and other co-occurring physical symptoms as contributing factors.

Abstract:Abstract Background Women with breast cancer are prone to have mental stress and be stimulated by the fear of progression (FOP), then giving rise to a lower quality of life (QOL). The study aimed to examine the relationships between FOP, social support and QOL, and further explore whether social support mediates the association between FOP and QOL among Chinese patients with breast cancer. Methods The cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2019 to May 2020 at Anshan Cancer Hospital in Liaoning, China. 244 female breast cancer patients completed questionnaires including the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy for Breast (FACT-B), Multi-Dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and Fear of Progression (FOP). Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed to assess the associations between FOP, social support and QOL. Asymptotic and resampling strategies were used to explore the mediating role of social support. Results The mean QOL score was 90.6 ± 17.0 among the patients with breast cancer. FOP was negatively correlated with QOL, while social support was positively related to QOL. Social support partly mediated the association between FOP and QOL, and the proportion of the mediating effect accounted for by social support was 25%. Conclusions Chinese breast cancer patients expressed low QOL. Social support could mediate the association between FOP and QOL. Medical staffs and cancer caregivers should alleviate patients’ FOP to improve their QOL by facilitating social support.

Abstract:PurposeCancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common and distressing symptom of cancer that may persist for years following treatment completion. However, little is known about the pathophysiology of CRF. Using a comprehensive group of gold-standard physiological and psychosocial assessments, this study aimed to identify correlates of CRF in a heterogenous group of cancer survivors.MethodsUsing a cross-sectional design to determine the physiological and psychosocial correlates of CRF, ninety-three cancer survivors (51 fatigued, 42 non-fatigued) completed assessments of performance fatigability (i.e. the decline in muscle strength during cycling), cardiopulmonary exercise testing, venous blood samples for whole blood cell count and inflammatory markers and body composition. Participants also completed questionnaires measuring demographic, treatment-related, and psychosocial variables.ResultsPerformance fatigability, time-to-task-failure, peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2peak), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), body fat percentage, and lean mass index were associated with CRF severity. Performance fatigability, V̇O2peak, TNF-α, and age explained 35% of the variance in CRF severity. Those with clinically-relevant CRF reported more pain, more depressive symptoms, less perceived social support, and were less physically active than non-fatigued cancer survivors.ConclusionsThe present study utilised a comprehensive group of gold-standard physiological and psychosocial assessments and the results give potential insight into the mechanisms underpinning the association between physical inactivity, physical deconditioning and CRF.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsGiven the associations between CRF and both physiological and psychosocial measures, this study identifies targets that can be measured by rehabilitation professionals and used to guide tailored interventions to reduce fatigue.

Abstract:Purpose While Fear of progression (FoP) is a natural reaction in cancer, elevated FoP can impact life quality and social function. Our study aims to explore how illness perception, social support, and posttraumatic growth influence patients' FoP. Methods This study enrolled 243 young and middle-aged adults with digestive system cancer at a hospital in Guangzhou from November 2022 to November 2023. In this study, the measurement instruments utilized included The Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form, The Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, The 12-item Perceived Social Support Scale, and The 21-item Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Data was analyzed employing polynomial regression and response surface analyses. Results The mean score of FoP was 35.45 ± 10.05, and 59.3% of the cancers (scores≥34) had clinically dysfunctional levels of FoP. Regarding congruence, patients' FoP was higher when the levels of illness perception and social support were both low or high than when the levels were both intermediate. Regarding incongruence, patients' FoP was lower when the level of illness perception was low and social support was high compared with when the level of illness perception was high and social support was low. Additionally, posttraumatic growth moderated the (in)congruence effect of illness perception-social support on the FoP of patients. Conclusions Low or high illness perception-social support congruence was detrimental to the FoP of patients. Low illness perception-high social support incongruence was beneficial to patients' FoP. Posttraumatic growth can be a positive factor for enhancing the impact of low illness perception-high social support incongruence on patients' FoP.

Abstract:Purpose: Although fear of cancer recurrence (FoR) is one of the major concerns in cancer patients and their partners with approximately 49% reporting moderate to high FoR, few studies investigated predictors and sex-role-specific differences. The aim of the current study was to investigate FoR in couples with different types of cancer and to gain a deeper understanding of sex and role-specific differences and predictors of FoR in patients and partners.Design: Cross-sectional study in Germany.Sample: N = 188 couples with prostate (PC; n=52), laryngeal (LC; n=21) or breast cancer (BC; n=115) participated. All PC and LC patients were males, all BC patients were females.Methods: Fear of recurrence, depression, and relationship satisfaction were measured with validated questionnaires (Fear of Progression Questionnaire, Patient Health Questionnaire, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Quality of Marriage Index) in couples with PC, LC, or BC.Findings: Results indicated sex-role-specific differences. For women, FoR was higher for patients (M = 35.76) than for caregivers (M = 27.11). For males, spouses of women with BC (M = 30.1) showed higher FoR than male PC or LC patients (M = 24.9). Moreover, in couples there was a correlation between the FoR of one and the other (PC: r = .51, BC: r = .31, LC: r = .41). Depression was as a significant predictor, with a positive relationship to FoR. Moreover, in men with PC and LC besides depression, age emerged as significant predictor with a negative relationship to FoR. The Actor-Partner-Interdependence-Model showed for couples with PC or LC significant actor effects, both for patients and partners. Moreover, a significant partner effect emerged for patients' depression on partners' FoR. For couples with BC only significant actor effects occurred.Conclusions: FoR remains a major concern for both cancer patients and their partners. Implications for Psychosocial Providers or Policy: FoR should be considered both in cancer patients and their spouses. In addition, sex and role effects should be taken into account in treatment of FoR.

Abstract:Background Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most common side effects and leads to a significant impairment of quality of life (QoL). At the same time many cancer patients suffer from malnutrition. Studies show that both physical activity and a good nutritional status reduce CRF. Until now this has only been considered in isolation. This study aims a comprehensive view to evaluate the relation of fatigue with malnutrition and level of activity. Methods 18 patients of the oncological sports and exercise therapy at the University Hospital Halle (Saale) were examined in a cross-sectional design. Outcome measures were the relevant values of body composition, such as body mass [% of fat-free mass] (BCM [% of FFM]), extracellular mass to body cell mass (ECM / BCM) and phase angle ϕ, which were determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Moreover CRF with EORTC QLQ FA12, Nutritional related QoL with FAACT, History and Current Level of Activity (Questionnaire from Woll) and Malnutrition with Subjective Global Assessment (SGA). The statistical analysis was made with description and Pearson’s correlations. Following, a linear regression analysis was supplemented with an ANOVA. Results The correlation between physical fatigue and habitual physical activity had a correlation coefficient of -0.641 (p=0.004). Between the physical fatigue and FAACT Total Score a negative linear correlation (correlation coefficient = -0.739, p<0.01) could be found. The correlation of the physical fatigue and the values from the BIA did not show any significant results. The linear regression analysis showed that 47.8 % of the total fatigue could be explained by the Functional Assessment of Anorexia/Cachexia Therapy (corr. R2 = 0.478, p=0.001) and that ECM/BCM and BCM [% of FFM] do not provide additional explanatory power. Conclusions It could be confirmed that the QoL of cancer patients is strongly limited by the CRF. The negative correlation between habitual activity and physical fatigue supports the hypothesis of the so-called "prehabilitation". It has been shown that it is a legitimate strategy to present nutritional status and level of physical activity in cancer patients with CRF at the same time.
