Abstract:Background — The mental health of medical students has long been a concern. Symptoms of depression and burnout are common among medical students, but the overlap of symptoms of both diseases with risk factors remains unclear. The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of burnout and depression symptoms’ overlap in medical students. Methods — This cross-sectional study was conducted among students of the clinical course (3rd, 4th and 5th years). A multistage stratified random sampling design was used to select 284students that were offered a validated and structured questionnaire that included a modified Oldenburg Burnout Inventory and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to assess their emotional burnout and depression, respectively. Chi-square and multinomial regression analyses were done to identify overlapping symptoms of burnout and depression with association of risk factors with dependent variable. Results — Out of 284 students, 13% had symptoms of severe depression, 24% had high burnout symptoms, and 32% had overlapping symptoms of burnout and depression. In regression analysis, higher academic year more than 2 times (5th year, OR 2.03, 95% CI 1.42-7.96, p-value 0.004) and living at dormitory more than 3 times (OR 3.97, 95% CI 1.97-5.01, p-value 0.003) were more likely associated with more extensive overlap of burnout and depression symptoms. Conclusion — There is a high prevalence of burnout and depression symptoms among medical students, with a strong association between the two disorders. Early burnout detection and psychiatric therapies given to affected students and these disorders management training at medical school, may help reduce negative consequences of these conditions.

Abstract:Objectives Burnout is a psychophysiological syndrome, consisting of a triad of emotional and physical exhaustion, exhibition of impersonal attitude and loss of a sense of achievement for oneself. This study aimed to pinpoint its risk factors, measure its current prevalence in medical students of Karachi, Pakistan and accentuate the areas of focus to benefit the primary care-oriented community as a whole. Methods This cross-sectional study included responses from 600 medical students in Karachi (third to final year). A self-administered questionnaire using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), multi-dimensional mood state questionnaire and perceived stress scale was used, along with a section about burnout prevention assessment. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 24.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) and chi-square tests used to find significant associations. Results One-fifth (n=109, 18.2%) of our subjects were burned out. The syndrome was significantly observed in those who operated on insufficient sleep (p-value 0.028) and in those having anger management issues and non-dominating temperaments (p-value 0.05). Furthermore, it was statistically significant in those who gave up easily, in those who had no hobbies and had no time to exercise and pray (p-value <0.05). It was more prevalent in pupils of private medical colleges whereas two of its three constitutive factors, Emotional Exhaustion (p-value 0.03) and Personal Achievement (p-value <0.001) were significantly higher in pupils of public sector universities. Conclusion The deleterious repercussions of burnout syndrome warrant the need for extensive efforts towards the propagation of its awareness.
Awareness of Burn First Aid Management among Undergraduate Medical Students at a Medical College Teaching Hospital

Abstract:Background First aid training, educational degree of health sector employee is linked to greater levels of knowledge, awareness and positive outcome in burn injury and its management but studies have shown insufficient level of awareness with unsatisfactory skills not only among professional healthcare workers but also in medical students. Objective To assess the knowledge and confidence of our medical students towards basic burn first aid and management. Method Cross sectional observational study was done using a structured, self-reported 16 multiple choice questionnaire with total marks of 30. Students was graded accordingly: more than 25 points: good, 16-25 points: satisfactory and less than 16 points: poor level of awareness about burn first aid management. Confidence in management of burn related victims, information on receiving of prior formal training in burns and sources of knowledge in students were also evaluated. Result Only a satisfactory level of awareness is seen in medical students 62.1%, 98.2% had not received any kind of formal training and the medical college curriculum was the main source of information (69.2%) followed by journals (47.1%) and internet (26%). 78.4% students felt that the curriculum provided to them was inadequate and only 5.3% students were confident in managing burn first aid. Conclusion There was inadequacy in the knowledge of burn first aid amongst undergraduate students therefore clinical course in managing burns into the undergraduate curriculum is vital.
Exploring Symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorders and Perceived Social Support among Patients with Burn Injury

Abstract:Introduction Burns are a serious public health problem globally, causing an estimated 265,000 deaths per year. Although the association of burn injuries with mortality and morbidity rates has been well established, data on their psychological consequences are scarce. The present study explores the frequency of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and perceived social support among patients with burn injuries in Pakistan. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted at two teaching hospitals in Lahore, Pakistan from May 2015 to July 2015. Eighty patients with burn injuries were included by convenience sampling and interviewed with a specifically designed questionnaire with items on demographics, and the Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R) and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) instruments. Results Data were analyzed for a total of 80 participants: 56 women (70.0%) and 24 men (30.0%). Mean age was 35.74 (11.15) years. A high proportion of participants perceived highest social support from friends, reported high ego resiliency levels, had more severe symptoms of avoidance and intrusion, and had high overall PTSD scores. There were no differences between groups in the proportions of respondents who reported high perceived social support from significant others or family, overall social support or symptoms of hyperarousal. Conclusion The findings reflect a high frequency of PTSD symptomatology and poor social support among Pakistani patients with burn injuries in our sample. These factors can exacerbate the patient's physical injury, delaying both their physical and mental rehabilitation.

Abstract:Chemical oscillations are studied using a continuous-flow microfluidic system transforming the time domain of chemical oscillators into a spatial domain. This system allows one (i) to monitor the dynamics of chemical oscillators with the accuracy of vigorously stirred batch reactors but with the ease and speed of CSTRs and (ii) to rapidly screen the phase space of chemical oscillators in just one experiment versus a traditional series of batch measurements.
Successful pregnancies after oocyte cryopreservation with slow-freezing method: a report of 3 cases.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The technology for successful oocyte cryopreservation has evolved only over the past decade. Fewer than 300 pregnancies achieved with cryopreserved oocytes were reported as of the end of 2006. Two cryopreservation techniques are currently available: the slow-cooling method and vitrification. This article reviews the world literature on pregnancies conceived from cryopreserved oocytes and reports 3 such pregnancies conceived with a slow-cooling method in our facility. CASES Three patients who underwent in vitro fertilization/embryo transfer cycles had the supranumerary oocytes cryopreserved using a slow-cooling method. After a period of 2-7 months, the oocytes were thawed, fertilized and the resulting embryos were transferred. All 3 patients conceived and 2 delivered-1 singleton and 1 a set of twins. The third patient conceived twins and was in the third trimester of her pregnancy at this writing. Literature review indicates that the majority of pregnancies to date have been achieved with a slow-cooling protocol. However, recent advances in the vitrification technology have improved its effectiveness and because of its simplicity made it the method of choice in oocyte cryopreservation. CONCLUSION Both slow-freezing and vitrification methods for oocyte cryopreservation can be used effectively to achieve pregnancies. Vitrification is technically simpler and may be more effective than slow freezing.

Abstract:Burnout, a state of vital exhaustion, has frequently been related to work-related stress and job dissatisfaction. Given the emotionally and physically challenging nature of their work, high rates of burnout have been reported among health care professionals. This may put them at a higher risk for of suffering from adverse mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety and stress. In our study, we aim to assess the prevalence i of and associations among burnout and job dissatisfaction and adverse mental health outcomes in a developing country, where the challenges faced by the health care system are unique. Facilities are over-burdened and there is a sharp contrast between doctor to patient ratios in developing and developed countries. We plan to conduct a cross sectional study at the largest tertiary care hospital in Pakistan and its peripheral affiliated health centers. A proportionate sampling technique will be employed to include medical and nursing students, interns, residents and consultants. Previously validated questionnaires, including the Maslach Burnout tool, DASS 21, and Job Satisfaction Survey will be disseminated through Survey Monkey. Statistical analysis will be conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics Version 23 to study the association among burnout, job dissatisfaction, adverse health outcomes and demographic and work-related factors This study may begin laying the foundation for prioritizing the novel concept of physician mental health in the developing world. Further research building on to the results of this study will generate evidence to make recommendations about routine screening for mental illness and policy changes in the health care system.

Abstract:This study estimated the prevalence of burnout and its determinants among medical students at Jazan University during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 444 medical students completed an online survey containing the Maslach burnout inventory. The prevalence of burnout was 54.5%. Burnout reached its peak during the fourth year whereas it was the lowest in the internship year. Being a resident in mountain areas, being delayed in college-level, being divorced, and having divorced parents were all associated with an increased risk of burnout. During their time at medical school, students generally showed a trend of consistently high scores in the personal accomplishment subscale, a decreasing trend in the emotional exhaustion subscale, and an increasing trend in the depersonalization subscale. The most important predictive factor was having separated parents. Perceived study satisfaction appeared to be a significant protective factor in a dose–response manner. These findings suggest that burnout among medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic is a concern that should be monitored and prevented.

Abstract:Background: Burnout is a serious problem in the training and professional development of medical students. However, there is no known data on the prevalence of burnout among medical students in Kazakhstan. This study aims at investigating burnout and associated factors in a sample of students from Astana Medical University. Methods: The study included socio-demographic and personal questions, Oldenburg Burnout Inventory for college students (OLBI-S) and Copenhagen Burnout Inventory-Students survey (CBI-S) to measure burnout. Statistical analyses included measures of descriptive statistics and regression analysis for evaluating burnout-associated factors. Results: In total, 736 medical students responded. The prevalence of burnout syndrome was 28% (CBI-S) and 31% (OLBI-S). There was a significant association between the prevalence and the level of burnout and student's gender, year of study, thoughts of dropping out, suicidal ideation, satisfaction with the chosen profession and academic performance, interpersonal relationship problems, the decision to study in medical school, smoking, accommodation, parental expectations, alcohol use, extracurricular activities, part-time job, somatic symptoms, depression, and anxiety. Conclusions: The factors associated with burnout were identified, which complements and expands the existing data on academic burnout. The data obtained can help in organizing psychological assistance for medical students in Kazakhstan.

Abstract:Background South Asian region contributes 59 % to the global mortality due to burns. However, there is a paucity of literature on the outcomes of burns from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). South Asian Burn Registry (SABR) is a facility-based burns registry that collected data on in-patient burn care. This study assesses factors associated with mortality, length of hospital stay at the burns center, and functional status of burn patients. Methods Prospective data was collected from two specialized public sector burn centers between September 2014 – January 2015 from Bangladesh and Pakistan. Multivariable logistic, linear, and ordinal logistic regression was conducted to assess factors associated with inpatient-mortality, length of hospital stay, and functional status at discharge, respectively. Results Data on 883 patients was analyzed. Increased association with mortality was observed with administration of blood product (OR:3, 95 % CI:1.18–7.58) and nutritional support (OR:4.32, 95 % CI:1.55–12.02). Conversely, antibiotic regimens greater than 8 days was associated with decreased mortality (OR:0.1, 95 % CI:0.03–0.41). Associated increase in length of hospital stay was observed in patients with trauma associated with their burn injury, history of seizures (CE:47.93, 95 % CI 12.05–83.80), blood product (CE:22.09, 95 % CI:0.83–43.35) and oxygen administration (CE:23.7, 95 % CI:7.34–40.06). Patients who developed sepsis (OR:6.89, 95 % CI:1.92–24.73) and received blood products during hospitalization (OR:2.55, 95 % CI:1.38- 4.73) were more likely to have poor functional status at discharge. Conclusion This study identified multiple factors associated with worse clinical outcomes for burn patients in South Asia. Understanding these parameters can guide targeted efforts to improve the process and quality of burn care in LMICs.

Abstract:Burnout, a condition of physical, emotional, and mental tiredness brought on by sustained involvement in challenging work settings, is widespread among medical students. International studies were conducted on burnout among healthcare students, particularly medical and nursing students, and the levels of burnout reported are concerning. The objective of this study is to find out the prevalence of burnout among physical therapy students. It was a cross-sectional survey conducted in the colleges/universities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The data was collected by using a self-structured questionnaire for demographic data and the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) scale which assesses burnout in the dimensions of Personal burnout, Work burnout, and student-related burnout, with a cut-off score of 50 for each dimension. A total of 299 DPT students enrolled in this study. The Mean age of participants in this study was 21.05±1.75. The prevalence of personal burnout was 46.2%, work-related burnout was 35.5% and student-related burnout was 39.1%. It was concluded that burnout is common among physical therapy students, with personal burnout being reported as the highest level of burnout.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Burns in developing countries account for significant morbidity and mortality which have been shown by increasing burn first aid awareness. In general, flames, scalds, and contact burns are the most common causes, but in children scalds are the most common.OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the general knowledge and practices related to burn first aid among Majmaah community.METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional study. Data were collected in 2018 using convenience sampling technique. Saudi men and women age 18 years and older living in Majmaah were included in the study. Data were collected from 390 males and females. The sample size was collected using precision formula. Data were encoded into Microsoft Excel worksheets and imported to Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS<sup>®</sup>) software for analysis.RESULTS: A total of 390 individuals responded to the survey. Regarding the demographic data of the study participants, 49.2% were between 30 and 49 years old. Most of them were females (71.8%). Regarding burn first aid knowledge, 82.6% of the study participants knew that the first thing is to stop, drop, and roll when your clothes catch fire, 43.8% knew to apply cold water if hot oil spills on the hands, 41.0% knew that all burn injuries must be treated at hospital, whereas most of them 78.5% knew never to apply raw eggs or herbs to burn wounds.CONCLUSION: The knowledge of Majmaah community toward first aid is found to be low in spite of most of the respondents having a positive attitude toward first aid. The majority of the study participants (73.8%) were well-educated and had a bachelor's degree.

Abstract:Using the hierarchy picture of the fractional quantum Hall effect, we study the the ground state periodicity of a finite size quantum Hall droplet in a quantum Hall fluid of a different filling factor. The droplet edge charge is periodically modulated with flux through the droplet and will lead to a periodic variation in the conductance of a nearby point contact, such as occurs in some quantum Hall interferometers. Our model is consistent with experiment and predicts that superperiods can be observed in geometries where no interfering trajectories occur. The model may also provide an experimentally feasible method of detecting elusive neutral modes and otherwise obtaining information about the microscopic edge structure in fractional quantum Hall states.

Abstract:Background: Burnout is a syndrome that result from chronic workplace stress and it characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and low personal accomplishments. Studies report higher burnout levels in medical personnel compared to the general population. Workplace burnout has been directly linked to medical errors and negative coping strategies such as substance abuse. The aims of this study were to assess the level of burnout in medical residents, evaluate their impressions about coping mechanisms and assess perceived impact on patient care in a low/ middle income country setting. Methods: This was a cross sectional, mixed methods survey carried out at Aga Khan University, Nairobi Kenya. The Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey was used to assess the level of burnout. High-risk scores for each subscale are defined as > 27 in emotional exhaustion, > 10 in depersonalization, and < 33 in personal accomplishment. Overall high risk of burnout was defined as high-risk scores in 2 or more of the 3 categories. Categorical variables were analysed using descriptive statistics and reported as frequency counts and corresponding percentages. Chi-square test was applied to test for association of burnout and the categorical variables. P value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. To assess the impressions on patient care and evaluate the coping mechanisms employed in the context of burnout residents participated in four focus group discussions reaching thematic saturation. Results: 95 out of 120 residents consented to participate in the study, 47.3% of whom had a high risk of burnout. A significant association was found between gender and burnout risk with more female residents having high risk of burnout compared to their male counterparts; 58.0% and 35.6% respectively (P value 0.029). Residents in paediatrics and child health had the greatest risk of burnout (8 out of 10) compared to those in other programmes (P value of 0.01). Thematic analysis from focus group discussions revealed that main sources of stress included departmental conflict and struggle to balance work and other aspects of life. All focus group discussions revealed that burnout and stress are associated with negative coping mechanisms. Respondents reported that when under stress, they felt more likely to make medical errors. Conclusion: This study reported high risk of burnout among post graduate residents which is consistent with other global studies. The sources of stress cited by residents were mostly related to the workplace and many perceived sub-optimal patients care resulted from burnout. This highlights a need for preventive measures such as wellness programs within the training programmes. Trial registration number: Not applicable.

Abstract:BackgroundBurn injuries are thought to be preventable but are still a prevalent global health problem, especially in low- and middle-income countries. It continues to remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Ethiopia. Proper knowledge about burn first aid minimizes the overall impact of the injury.PurposeThis study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice toward burn first aid and its associated factors among caregivers attending burn units in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2021/22.MethodsA hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among caregivers of burn patients attending Yekatit 12 hospital medical college and Addis Ababa Burn Emergency and Trauma (AaBET) hospital burn units. A total of 305 caregivers were recruited by a simple random sampling method from both hospitals. Data was collected using a standard interviewer-administrated questionnaire, cleaned, coded, and entered into EPI data version 6, and then exported to SPSS version 26 for further analysis. The generated data were compiled by frequency tables, charts, and graphs. A logistic regression model was used to measure the association between independent versus outcome variables, considering the AOR, 95% CI, and p < 0.05 as significant for all the independent variables.ResultA total of 305 participants responded to this study. Among these, the majority, 185(60.7%) of caregivers were females, while 120(39.3%) were Males. The main source of knowledge for those who had previous information on a burn and its first aid treatment were families, friends, colleagues, and guardians. A significant portion of 246(80.7%) respondents did not take any form of burn first aid training. The study indicates that 202(66.2%) and 195(63.9%) of the study participants have poor knowledge and practice, respectively, despite the majority. 225(73.8%) of responders have a favorable attitude regarding burn first aid.Conclusion and recommendationThis study showed an explicit knowledge and practice gap among caregivers towards burn first aid even though the majorities have a favorable attitude. Developing an effective nationwide burn prevention program and early burn first aid treatment in Ethiopia and promoting a consistent guideline for burn first aid.

Abstract:Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a major cause of premature deaths globally. The gap between knowledge and behavior regarding modifiable risk factors related to these diseases has been noticed in medical students and is associated with a high number of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge and behavior regarding cardiovascular diseases risk factors among newly enrolled MBBS students. Subjects and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from May to September 2021. A total of 140 first-year MBBS students participated including 80 females and 60 males. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire having 17 questions and two sections, one for knowledge assessment and the other for the behavior of participants regarding CVD risk factors. Results: Major risk factors for heart disease identified by students included obesity (99.3%), high cholesterol (98.6%), hypertension (97.9%), lack of physical activity (95.7%), smoking (82.1%), older age (89.3%), family history of heart disease (73.6%) and diabetes (78.6%). Pertaining to personal history, 10% were smokers, 32.1% regularly consumed soft drinks and 79.3% reported having any physical activities. Significant differences were found between male and female students regarding knowledge of CVD risk factors such as smoking (p-value = 0.003). Similarly, significant differences were observed between male and female students heart health behavior such as cholesterol checkup (31.7% vs. 16.2%, p-value = 0.032), use of soft drinks (48.3% vs 20%, p-value = 0.001) and physical activity (90% vs. 71.2%, p-value = 0.007). Conclusion: First-year medical students have good knowledge of CVD risk factors but the behavior, regarding practice to avoid these risk factors, needs improvement. It was also observed by comparison that male students have more knowledge of heart disease risk factors as compared to female students.

Prevalence and Correlates of Burnout among Undergraduate Medical Students - A Cross-sectional Survey

Abstract:Background: Burnout among medical students is important for its prevalence, consequences, and modifiable risk factors. Although there are studies on the topic across the globe, Indian studies are few in number. A prevalence estimate of burnout and its determinants among Indian medical graduates will keep us informed about the emotional and motivational factors hindering their professional growth. Methods: From a total of 500 students spanning 5 professional years, data could be collected from 375 students. The study used a questionnaire primarily consisting of "personal burnout" domain of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI), which is a validated instrument to assess the burnout at a cutoff score of 50. The questionnaire also included a set of potential personal correlates of burnout. In addition to summary statistics, both univariate and multivariate analyses were used for discerning the relationship of these correlates with burnout. Results: The prevalence of burnout among medical students in the college under study was 48.5% (95% confidence interval 43.4-53.7). The proportions of moderate, higher, and severe burnout were 44.8%, 3.2%, and 0.5% respectively. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that female gender and perceived stress were associated with burnout. Choosing medicine by one's own choice and maintaining hobbies and interests were associated with less chance for burnout. Conclusion: Burnout is a prevalent phenomenon among medical students. There are modifiable risk factors for burnout and addressing them will help in training a medical student with high motivation and professionalism.

Abstract:Background: Burn injuries represent a significant public health concern, with the effectiveness of preventive measures and first aid largely dependent on public knowledge. This study aimed to evaluate the awareness of burn injury prevention and first aid management among adults in Jazan, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered to adults in Jazan using a structured questionnaire. The survey assessed participants' knowledge of burn causes, preventive strategies, and first aid practices. Responses were analyzed to gauge the level of awareness and identify gaps in knowledge. Results: Among the participants (n = 400), 71.3% (n = 285) recognized hot liquids as a primary burn hazard, 27.4% (n = 109) identified electricity, 97.0% (n = 388) cited fire, and 53.8% (n = 215) acknowledged chemicals. In terms of preventive measures, 61.6% (n = 246) understood the importance of following manufacturer safety guidelines, 78.8% (n = 315) knew to keep chemicals out of children's reach, 72.4% (n = 289) were aware of the need to wear gloves, and 61.6% (n = 246) recognized the necessity of avoiding the storage of unnecessary chemicals. For first aid practices, 91.8% (n = 367) knew to use water, 50.8% (n = 203) would seek medical attention, 22.6% (n = 90) would cover burns, and 20.3% (n = 81) considered pain management important. Conclusions: The findings indicate a strong awareness among adults in Jazan regarding burn injury causes, prevention, and first aid practices. Despite this, gaps remain in specific first-aid responses and comprehensive safety measures. Targeted educational initiatives could address these gaps and enhance burn injury prevention and management.
