Abstract:While visualization has been widely used as a data presentation tool in both desktop and mobile devices, the rapid visualization of information from images is still underexplored. In this work, we present a smartphone image acquisition and visualization approach for text-based data. Our prototype, ShotVis, takes images of text captured from mobile devices and extracts information for visualization. First, scattered characters in the text are processed and interactively reformulated to be stored as structured data (i.e., tables of numbers, lists of words, sentences). From there, ShotVis allows users to interactively bind visual forms to the underlying data and produce visualizations of the selected forms through touch-based interactions. In this manner, ShotVis can quickly summarize text from images into word clouds, scatterplots, and various other visualizations all through a simple click of the camera. In this way, ShotVis facilitates the interactive exploration of text data captured via cameras in smartphone devices. To demonstrate our prototype, several case studies are presented along with one user study to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:Obtaining information about outdoor scenes has always been a great difficulty for visually impaired people. One of the urgent needs is to obtain the name of all the stores in the scenes where the visually impaired people are when they want to go shopping in an unfamiliar environment without asking others. However, there are no mature assistant tools to help them get this information so far, which bring them great inconvenience. To address this problem, we employ the latest OCR technology and the most mature speech recognition technology to create a scene shop recognition application based on Android system which can recognize the name of all shops in front of the visually impaired conveniently and efficiently by just taking a picture with a mobile phone. With the assistance of this application, the travel experience of the visually impaired can be greatly improved.
Scene Text Detection and Recognition System for Visually Impaired People in Real World

Abstract:Visually Impaired (VI) people around the world have difficulties in socializing and traveling due to the limitation of traditional assistive tools. In recent years, practical assistance systems for scene text detection and recognition allow VI people to obtain text information from surrounding scenes. However, real-world scene text features complex background, low resolution, variable fonts as well as irregular arrangement which make it difficult to achieve robust scene text detection and recognition. In this paper, a scene text recognition system to help VI people is proposed. Firstly, we propose a high-performance neural network to detect and track objects, which is applied to specific scenes to obtain Regions of Interest (ROI). In order to achieve real-time detection, a light-weight deep neural network has been built using depth-wise separable convolutions that enables the system to be integrated into mobile devices with limited computational resources. Secondly, we train the neural network using the textural features to improve the precision of text detection. Our algorithm suppresses the effects of spatial transformation (including translation, scaling, rotation as well as other geometric transformations) based on the spatial transformer networks. Open-source optical character recognition (OCR) is used to train scene texts individually to improve the accuracy of text recognition. The interactive system eventually transfers the number and distance information of inbound buses to visually impaired people. Finally, a comprehensive set of experiments on several benchmark datasets demonstrates that our algorithm has achieved an extraordinary trade-off between precision and resource usage.
Scene Text Access: A Comparison of Mobile OCR Modalities for Blind Users

Abstract:We present a study with seven blind participants using three different mobile OCR apps to find text posted in various indoor environments. The first app considered was Microsoft SeeingAI in its Short Text mode, which reads any text in sight with a minimalistic interface. The second app was Spot+OCR, a custom application that separates the task of text detection from OCR proper. Upon detection of text in the image, Spot+OCR generates a short vibration; as soon as the user stabilizes the phone, a high-resolution snapshot is taken and OCR-processed. The third app, Guided OCR, was designed to guide the user in taking several pictures in a 360° span at the maximum resolution available by the camera, with minimum overlap between pictures. Quantitative results (in terms of true positive ratios and traversal speed) were recorded. Along with the qualitative observation and outcomes from an exit survey, these results allow us to identify and assess the different strategies used by our participants, as well as the challenges of operating these systems without sight.

A Vision Aid for the Visually Impaired using Commodity Dual-Rear-Camera Smartphones

Abstract:Dual- (or multiple) rear cameras on hand-held smartphones are believed to be the future of mobile photography. Recently, many of such new has been released (mainly with dual-rear cameras: one wide-angle and one telephoto). Some of the notable ones are Apple iPhone 7 and 8 Plus, iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9, LG V30, Huawei Mate 10. With built-in dual-camera systems, these devices are capable of not only producing better quality picture but also acquiring 3D stereo photos (with depth information collected). Thus, they are capable of capturing the moment in life with depth just like our two eye system. Thanks to this current trend, these phones are now getting cheaper while becoming more power complete. In this paper, we describe a system that makes use of the commercial dual rear-camera phones such as the iPhone X, to provide aids for people who are visually impaired. We propose a design to place the phone on the chest centre of the user who has one or two Bluetooth headphone(s) plugged into the ears to listen to the phone audio outputs. Our system is consist of three modules: (1) the scene context recognition to audio, (2) the 3D stereo reconstruction to audio, and (3) the interactive audio/voice controls. In slightly more detail, the wide-angle camera captures live photos to be investigated by a GPS guided Deep Learning process to describe the scene in front of him/herself (module 1). The telephoto camera captures the more narrow-angle and thus to be stereo reconstructed with the aids of the wide angle's one to form a depth map (densed area-based distance map). The map helps determine the distance to all visible object(s) to notify the user with critical ones (module 2). This module also makes the phone vibrate when an object(s) located close enough to the user, e.g. within hand reach distance. The user can also query the system by asking various questions to get automatic voice answering (module 3). In addition, a manual rescue module (module 4) is also added when other things have gone wrong. An example of the vision to audio could be ”Overall, likely a corridor, one medium object is 0.5 m away - central left”, or ”Overall, city pathway, front cleared”. Audio command input may be ”read texts”, and the phone will detect and read all texts on closest object. More details on the design and implementation are further described in this paper.

Abstract:With the ever-growing expansion of mobile technology worldwide, there is an increasing need for accommodation for those who are disabled. This project explores how machine learning and computer vision could be utilized to improve accessibility for people with visual impairments. There have been many attempts to develop various software that would improve accessibility in the day-to-day lives of blind people. However, applications on the market have low accuracy and only provide audio feedback. This project will concentrate on building a mobile application that helps blind people to orient in space by receiving audio and haptic feedback, e.g. vibrations, about their surroundings in real-time. The mobile application will have 3 main features. The initial feature is scanning text from the camera and reading it to a user. This feature can be used on paper with text, in the environment, and on road signs. The second feature is detecting objects around the user, and providing audio feedback about those objects. It also includes providing the description of the objects and their location, and giving haptic feedback if the user is too close to an object. The last feature is currency detection which provides a total amount of currency value to the user via the camera.

Investigating Use Cases of AI-Powered Scene Description Applications for Blind and Low Vision People

Abstract:"Scene description" applications that describe visual content in a photo are useful daily tools for blind and low vision (BLV) people. Researchers have studied their use, but they have only explored those that leverage remote sighted assistants; little is known about applications that use AI to generate their descriptions. Thus, to investigate their use cases, we conducted a two-week diary study where 16 BLV participants used an AI-powered scene description application we designed. Through their diary entries and follow-up interviews, users shared their information goals and assessments of the visual descriptions they received. We analyzed the entries and found frequent use cases, such as identifying visual features of known objects, and surprising ones, such as avoiding contact with dangerous objects. We also found users scored the descriptions relatively low on average, 2.76 out of 5 (SD=1.49) for satisfaction and 2.43 out of 4 (SD=1.16) for trust, showing that descriptions still need significant improvements to deliver satisfying and trustworthy experiences. We discuss future opportunities for AI as it becomes a more powerful accessibility tool for BLV users.

Abstract:The pervasiveness of mobile devices and other associated technologies has affected all aspects of our daily lives. People with visual impairments are no exception, as they increasingly tend to rely on mobile apps for assistance with various visual tasks in daily life. Compared to dedicated visual aids, mobile apps offer advantages such as affordability, versatility, portability, and ubiquity. We have surveyed hundreds of mobile apps of potential interest to people with vision impairments, either released as special assistive apps claiming to help in tasks such as text or object recognition (n = 68), digital accessibility (n = 84), navigation (n = 44), and remote sighted service (n = 4), among others, or marketed as general camera magnification apps that can be used for visual assistance (n = 77). While assistive apps as a whole received positive feedback from visually impaired users, as reported in various studies, evaluations of the usability of every app were typically limited to user reviews, which are often not scientifically informative. Rigorous evaluation studies on the effect of vision assistance apps on daily task performance and quality of life are relatively rare. Moreover, evaluation criteria are difficult to establish, given the heterogeneity of the visual tasks and visual needs of the users. In addition to surveying literature on vision assistance apps, this review discusses the feasibility and necessity of conducting scientific research to understand visual needs and methods to evaluate real-world benefits. Abstract:One of the three structural glycoproteins of classical swine fever virus (CSFV) is E0, a disulfide-bonded homodimer that induces virus-neutralizing antibodies and occurs in a virion-bound as well as a secreted form. E0 was shown to be similar to a family of fungal and plant ribonucleases. Purified E0 from CSFV-infected cells was a potent ribonuclease specific for uridine and inhibitable by zinc ions.
ObjectFinder: Open-Vocabulary Assistive System for Interactive Object Search by Blind People

Abstract:Assistive technology can be leveraged by blind people when searching for objects in their daily lives. We created ObjectFinder, an open-vocabulary interactive object-search prototype, which combines object detection with scene description and navigation. It enables blind persons to detect and navigate to objects of their choice. Our approach used co-design for the development of the prototype. We further conducted need-finding interviews to better understand challenges in object search, followed by a study with the ObjectFinder prototype in a laboratory setting simulating a living room and an office, with eight blind users. Additionally, we compared the prototype with BeMyEyes and Lookout for object search. We found that most participants felt more independent with ObjectFinder and preferred it over the baselines when deployed on more efficient hardware, as it enhances mental mapping and allows for active target definition. Moreover, we identified factors for future directions for the development of object-search systems.

Abstract:People with visual impairments face numerous challenges in their daily lives, including mobility, access to information, independent living, and employment. Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Computer Vision (CV) has the potential to improve their daily lives, provide them with necessary independence, and it will also spawn new opportunities in education and employment. However, while many such AI/CV-based mobile applications are now available, these apps are still not the preferred choice amongst visually impaired persons and are generally limited to advanced users only, due to certain limitations. This study evaluates the challenges faced by visually impaired persons when using AI/CV-based mobile apps. Four popular AI/CV- based apps, namely Seeing AI, Supersense, Envision and Lookout, are assessed by blind and low-vision users. Hence these mobile applications are evaluated on a set of parameters, including generic parameters based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and specific parameters related to mobile app testing. The evaluation not only focused on the guidelines but also on the feedback that was gathered from these users on parameters covering the apps' accuracy, response time, reliability, accessibility, privacy, energy efficiency and usability. The paper also identifies the areas of improvement in the development and innovation of these assistive apps. This work will help developers create better accessible AI-based apps for the visually impaired.

Abstract:This paper describes a novel multimodal interactive image search system on mobile devices. The system, the Joint search with ImaGe, Speech, And Word Plus (JIGSAW${+}$ ), takes full advantage of the multimodal input and natural user interactions of mobile devices. It is designed for users who already have pictures in their minds but have no precise descriptions or names to address them. By describing it using speech and then refining the recognized query by interactively composing a visual query using exemplary images, the user can easily find the desired images through a few natural multimodal interactions with his/her mobile device. Compared with our previous work JIGSAW, the algorithm has been significantly improved in three aspects: 1) segmentation-based image representation is adopted to remove the artificial block partitions; 2) relative position checking replaces the fixed position penalty; and 3) inverted index is constructed instead of brute force matching. The proposed JIGSAW${+}$ is able to achieve 5% gain in terms of search performance and is ten times faster.
Clinicopathologic study of early stage esophageal carcinoma.

Abstract:As part of a consecutive series of 370 patients who underwent subtotal esophagectomy because of carcinoma of the thoracic area of the esophagus, between January 1965 and July 1988, in the Second Department of Surgery, Kyushu University Hospital, 42 patients (11.4%) with early stage esophageal carcinomas confined to the intraepithelium, mucosa, or submucosa were studied clinicopathologically. Of these 42, 26 (61.9%) had symptoms; slight dysphagia or chest discomfort was the most common symptom. The remaining 16 (38.1%) had no subjective symptoms. Endoscopic examination proved to be more useful than barium studies. Lugol-combined endoscopy was most effective in detecting the presence and spread of small malignant lesions of the esophagus. At the time of surgery, six patients with submucosal carcinoma of the esophagus had lymph node metastasis, and five died of recurrence. Described herein are the diagnostic features, clinicopathologic characteristics, and long-term results of these 42 patients with early stage, and 328 patients with advanced, carcinomas of the esophagus, detected and surgically treated in our clinics.
Multimodal Search on Mobile Devices

Abstract:The increasingly popularity of powerful mobile devices, such as smart phones and PDAs, enables users to search for information on the move. However, text is still the main input modality in most current mobile search services although some providers are attempting to provide voice-based mobile search solutions. In this chapter, we explore the innovative query modalities to enable mobile devices to support queries such as text, voice, image, location, and their combinations. We propose a solution to support mobile users to perform visual queries. The queries by captured pictures and text information are studied in depth. For example, the user can simply take a photo of an unfamiliar flower or surrounding buildings to find related information from the Web. A set of indexing schemes are designed to achieve accurate results and fast search through large volumes of data. Experimental results show that our prototype system achieved satisfactory performance. Also, we briefly introduce a prospective mobile search solution based on our ongoing research, which supports multimodal queries including location information, captured pictures and text information.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to achieve the following goals: apply some principles in visual search theory to design and develop a screen magnifier; evaluate if applying such features could increase user performance; and make some recommendations for designing a screen magnifier according to the findings of the study. In order to achieve these goals, a screen magnifier and an experimental tool to present stimulus words were developed. Seventy-two elderly Chinese adults took part in the experiment. The findings indicate that, for a screen magnifier, the overlapping mode is superior to the parallel mode; the yellow-highlighted background is superior to the non-highlighted background; for lower-density text, the dual output mode (visual+auditory) is superior to the mono output mode (visual only), while for the higher-density text, no difference was found between the mono and dual output modes. Based on the findings, several recommendations are made. The overlapping mode should be set as the default working mode. Yellow could be a reasonable choice of background color for a magnifier when the text is black. Auditory output support should be used, and users should be advised to use dual output when the text density is lower and mono output when the text density is higher.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe traditional text-based visual search has not been sufficiently improved over the years to accommodate the new emerging demand of mobile users. While on the go, searching on one's phone is becoming pervasive. This paper presents an innovative application for mobile phone users to facilitate their visual search experience. By taking advantage of smart phone functionalities such as multi-modal and multi-touch interactions, users can more conveniently formulate their search intent, and thus search performance can be significantly improved. The system, called JIGSAW (Joint search with ImaGe, Speech, And Words), represents one of the first attempts to create an interactive and multi-modal mobile visual search application. The key of JIGSAW is the composition of an exemplary image query generated from the raw speech via multi-touch user interaction, as well as the visual search based on the exemplary image. Through JIGSAW, users can formulate their search intent in a natural way like playing a jigsaw puzzle on the phone screen: 1) a user speaks a natural sentence as the query, 2) the speech is recognized and transferred to text which is further decomposed to keywords through entity extraction, 3) the user selects preferred exemplary images that can visually represent his/her intent and composes a query image via multi-touch, and 4) the composite image is then used as a visual query to search similar images. We have deployed JIGSAW on a real-world phone system, evaluated the performance on one million images, and demonstrated that it is an effective complement to existing mobile visual search applications.
