Abstract:The significant growth of the cruise ship industry has resulted in economic benefits, but there are also waste management-related challenges. The aim of this case study was to contribute to the research of cruise ship waste management at the Port of Rio de Janeiro. A3 methodology, applied for the first time in this context, was used to create questionnaires to assess the stakeholders involved, revealing that institutional bureaucracy has a negative effect on waste management. In addition, secondary data on unloaded waste, obtained from the transport manifests, showed that 56 % contained reliable information. The main wastes were plastics (57 %), glass (17 %), metal (9 %), and others. With respect to destinations, 41 % were sent to landfills, 55 % recycled and 4 % thermally treated. Only 5 % of cruise ship moorings removed waste at the Port of Rio de Janeiro, attributed to factors such as high costs.

Abstract:In 1999, a department of emergency medicine was asked to provide medical care at a football stadium with a capacity of 61,625. Over four seasons, the department's experience has been that the number of patients seen during a game correlates closely with game-time heat andhumidity (heat index). Objective. To determine how closely the heat index is associated with the number of patients who will require care at a mass gathering event. Methods. This was a retrospective review of all patient care from 1999 to 2003 at a Division I college football stadium located in the southeastern United States. All patrons seen in two emergency care centers (ECCs) were included. To control for stadium attendance, the Pearson product–moment correlation (PPMC) was calculated for each game. This statistical tool determines whether there is a positive correlation between heat index andratio of number of patients cared for per 10,000 patrons. Results. A total of 20 games occurred, andthe heat index ranged from 33 to 92. Number of patients varied from 15 to 74, andstadium attendance ranged from 53,371 to 61,625. The PPMC was calculated as 0.607, which indicates a strong positive correlation between heat index andpatient volume (p < 0.005). Linear modeling predicts that for every 10-degree increase in the heat index, three more patients per 10,000 patrons will require care. Conclusions. In this retrospective study, the heat index was strongly associated with the volume of patients who would be seen at a mass gathering event.

Abstract:Waterway transport is of great importance for the population of the Amazon Region. It is responsible for moving, according to Agência Nacional de Transportes Aquaviários (Antaq, 2018), approximately 9.8 million passengers and 3.4 million tons of cargo distributed by state, interstate longitudinal transport interstate and crossing. However, despite the great importance, there are several blockages related to the conditions of the roads and vessels in certain routes. The study in question proposes the use of a mathematical tool to analyze vessels from the relative efficiency involving parameters of input and output for two analysis scenarios: Energy Efficiency Analysis and Modality Analysis, being analyzed variables such as power, consumption, total time of the trip, total distance of the line of action, passenger capacity and ticket price. For that, the data of 652 vessels used in the Amazon region registered in the Brazilian states (Pará, Amazonas, Amapá and Rondônia) were verified, and from these data, a sample space of 148 vessels from the same utilization level was selected. With these data, a model was developed using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology, with the aid of the DEA-Solver software. After the use of the solver, the relative efficiency indexes of each vessel were obtained, allowing to rank and measure the efficient and inefficient Decision Units (DMU'S). Lastly, analysis of the general characteristics of efficient vessels were made in order to stratify the parameters that may have transformed them into efficient DMU`s, making it possible to trace a profile of the type of vessel employed in each type of line, thus helping in decision making of new projects.

Abstract:Ships play a vital role in international trade for optimising transportation costs and help in boosting the economy in a globalized world. Therefore, a plethora of research has already been available in the areas related to the design, production, and operations of ships. However, little progress has been made around end-of-life (EOL) ships. For recycling the EOL ships, the terms "shipbreaking" and "ship recycling" were used in past studies and most of the time these terms can be interchangeably used in different studies. Still, there is a contextual difference that is further discussed. This study compiled the different methods of shipbreaking and ship recycling and the key regulations that facilitate the handling of EOL ships. Furthermore, it assesses the research trends of EOL ships from 1991 to 2021 through a systematic review with bibliometric analysis using the database of Scopus. For the systematic review, the topmost relevant publications are evaluated, and the key findings are compiled to find out the overall status of their contributions to shipbreaking and ship recycling research. Gaps are identified, and future research directions are discovered that might serve as a roadmap for further research development on EOL ships.

A reverse logistics model is described as a potential solution to these barriers if the challenges to the model’s implementation are resolved.

Abstract:This paper presents a study of the port logistics activities at the port of Santos (Brazil). The study follows a qualitative approach and it is based on in-depth interviews with some key actors from Santos port logistics chain. Based on these interviews, the main dysfunctions and improvement opportunities associated to the container port logistics processes at Santos were identified. The results show that the main dysfunctions are related to the existing information flows. Due to this, a new information flow related to the studied port is proposed and some probable results of the implementation are identified. The findings contribute both to the studied port and to the academic community, as the number of studies addressing port logistics activities is still limited.

Abstract:Coastal cities in the Amazon lack basic infrastructure to treat and finally discharge urban domestic sewage. Implementing sub-river outfalls and waste-treatment pre-conditioning that significantly reduce pollution impact would be a sustainable alternative to cope with such an issue. The aim of the present research is to analyze the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of alternative projects applied to domestic waste's proper destination in the coastal zone of Amapá State (ZCEA), Brazil. Infrastructure basic sizing and the current treatment provided to domestic waste discharged in Amazonas River, in natura , were taken into consideration for study conduction. Research methodology was applied as follows: (a) pre-sizing the main infrastructure elements of sub-river outfalls (EM); (b) assessing the reduction of impacts on quality of water in the metropolitan seashore of Macapá and Santana cities; (c) economic assessment based on the alternative implementation of underwater outfalls in Macapá's Northern and Central zones, where one finds Amazonas River's high self-depuration ability and regular bathymetry. Technical feasibility, mainly in Fazendinha and Santana cities, was not satisfactory due to topobathymetric unevenness and traffic jam in Santana Channel's waterway. We have concluded that the self-depuration and sanitary features in Amazonas River's assessed stretches are a sustainable, effective and competitive technology extremely favorable for the implementation of sub-river outfalls, given its simplicity and, most of all, adjustment to the regional socioeconomic reality.

Abstract:Waterway transportation is a very ancient mobility solution. Amazon region represents a good case study, where waterway transport played and is still playing a very important role. Nevertheless, passenger waterway transportation lacks economic models that help in designing and implementing strategies towards sustainability. In this work, a cost model of passenger waterway transportation was developed based on the assumptions of activity-based costing and used linear programming for cost optimization under demand and service level restrictions, with an objective-function of profit maximization of service. The model was applied in a passenger waterway transportation company to three crossings in Belém city - Brazil, for passengers and cargo, and vehicle transportation, operating on trips between Belém and Marajó Island. Different simulations in order to explore the opportunities and conditions of operational cost reductions were made. The search was for the best relation between cost and profit, i. e., model parameters include variable cost, profit and maximum number of possible trips. On results, cost reduction alternatives were established in order to reach the maximum profit and number of trips. The model proved to be useful for the design of sustainable waterway transportation services through the analysis of feasible and effective cost reduction strategies.

Abstract:Despite the presence of numerous navigable rivers in Brazil, they remain underutilized for Inland Waterway Transport (IWT). Given the recent changes in transport systems which aim to reduce reliance on highways due to their high cost and lack of sustainability, it becomes crucial to explore new transport models in Brazil, shifting part of the transport from roads to railways and mainly to waterways. To fill this gap in Brazil's transport system, it was decided to check why waterways are little used and what challenges cause them to be underutilized and, additionally, what opportunities could leverage their use in the country. In this sense, in this study, we identify the biggest challenges and opportunities faced by IWT in Brazil. To achieve this objective, interviews were conducted using content analysis with managers who work in public and private IWT organizations active in Brazil. Results show that IWT has seen a recovery in interest in recent years due to the need for cheaper and greener logistics. It was also found that the main challenges that IWT faces are a lack of public policies followed by precarious infrastructure of waterways, ports and locks, as well as modest integration with other transport modes. Conversely, the most significant opportunity lies in the potential reduction in transport costs, coupled with the enhanced sustainability of transport activities via the utilization of IWT, thereby fostering greener transport practices. These results can contribute to a better understanding of practical and theoretical approaches related to IWT in Brazil, and they can serve as a reflection for new research focusing on the development of IWT especially in other emerging countries facing similar issues.

Reverse logistics systems in Brazil: Comparative study and interest of multistakeholders

Abstract:Inadequate solid waste management leads to contamination of the soil and surface and underground water; the emergence of antibiotic-resistant superbacteria due to the inadequate disposal of medicines in toilets or in household rubbish; and the emission of persistent organic pollutants, such as flame retardants, present in some electrical/electronic equipment. In Brazil, the principles that underpin the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) are consistent with those used by developed countries, namely, the polluter-payer and protector-receiver; cooperation among the different spheres of government, the business sector, and other societal segments; and the shared product life-cycle responsibility (Brasil, 2010a; Novi et al., 2013; Santos et al., 2019). In the latter, selective collection and reverse logistics systems are the primary instruments (Zhang et al., 2011). Thus, the general objective of this work is to compare the technical and economic feasibility of four different sectorial agreements for reverse logistics implemented in Brazil. The specific objective is to describe the possible conflicts of interest of the multistakeholders. The sources of evidence used in this multi-case study were interviews, observations, and documentary research in the period from 2016 to 2018. The first result demonstrated that the economic viability of reverse logistics systems are obtained when the wastes have a commercial value after consumption (packaging and consumer electronics) or when industries organize to charge a fee that covers the costs of recycling and transport (lamps and medicines). The second result shows that there are many stakeholders involved in this process: manufacturers and importers, consumers, private waste and recycling companies, and government represented by municipalities, the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), and state environmental agencies (OEMAs). Each one has different interests and responsibilities: government has to preserve the environment and comply with international agreements on climate change, thus creating laws that ultimately burden companies and cities; profit-maximizing companies evaluate these rules as additional costs in their operations, whereas cities, in which operations are conducted, have low financial and managerial capacity. The stakeholder map reveals that there are overlapping roles among agents, with some being the same for all chains, and the constructed power and level of interest matrix indicates the importance of the process to be conducted by the state to align economic and social-environmental interests.

Abstract:The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has compromised to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the mid- and long-terms. Besides energy efficiency measures, the development of potentially carbon neutral fuels in the upcoming years is key to achieve the sector's goals. Brazil is a major commodity exporter whose unfavored geographical position increases the carbon intensity of its maritime transportation. In this context, this study presents a multicriteria methodology to compare possible alternative fuels for the Brazilian maritime trade. To this end, 14 fuel options are evaluated according to technical, economic, and environmental criteria to which different weights are assigned. The ranking of results indicates that drop-in fuels such as Fischer-Tropsch diesel, alcohol-based diesel, straight and hydrotreated vegetable oils and e-diesel stand out as promising mid-term alternatives. Biomass-based liquefied natural gas (Bio-LNG) performance in the evaluation is hampered mostly by the risk of methane slip. Green hydrogen and green ammonia, on the other hand, seem to be less competitive alternatives in the mid-term horizon for Brazil but may become alternatives for cabotage transport in the long-term.

Abstract:The current marketing system faces one of the major challenges of finding strategies for safer logistics, both in quality and practicality to the competitive process that can be applied in the market. Transport infrastructure plays a significant role in the logistics process, as it impacts transport costs, bringing limits to the economic and social development of the region. In terms of transportation logistics in the Amazon, there are still obstacles where companies are constantly seeking to divert or solve such difficulties, since the state has geographical specificities, where its extensive rivers make the flow of production more difficult, so In this way, it is essential to understand how public waterway transportation policies contribute to the logistical bottlenecks of Amazonas. The state of Amazonas maintains about 600 km of state roads, however precariously, making traffic slow, and with the lack of BRs, the state is also penalized. Manaus has BR 174 and BR 210 that connects the municipality to Boa Vista, and BR 319 that connects Amazonas with the rest of the country is not completed and there is no concrete deadline for its completion, given the many difficulties and flaws. faced in that region. Regarding transport logistics in the most exclusive North Region in Amazonas, one particularity stands out: the lack of integrated planning for infrastructure that can bring positive results, both social and economic.

Abstract:In a globalized world, the world trade fleet plays a pivotal role in limiting transport costs. But, the management of obsolete ships is an acute problem, with most Ship Recycling Facilities (SRF) situated in developing countries. They are renowned for their controversial work and safety conditions and their environmental impact. Paradoxically, dismantlement is paid for by the shipowners in accordance with international conventions therefore it is more profitable for them to sell off ships destined for scrapping. Scuttling, the alternative to scrapping, is assessed in the present review to compare the cost/benefit ratios of the two approaches. Although scrapping provides employment and raw materials – but with environmental, health and safety costs – scuttling provides fisheries and diving tourism opportunities but needs appropriate management to avoid organic and metal pollution, introduction of invasive species and exacerbation of coastal erosion. It is also limited by appropriate bottom depth, ship type and number. The present review inventories the environmental, health, safety, economic, and forensic aspects of each alternative.

Abstract:Ship recycling has gained significant importance in recent years due to the growing awareness of environmental concerns and the need for sustainable practices within the maritime industry. As vessels reach the end of their operational life, proper recycling methods are crucial to mitigate environmental impacts and promote resource conservation. With an increasing number of ships being decommissioned annually, there has been a growing interest and emphasis on developing efficient and eco-friendly ship recycling practices worldwide. This article presents a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis of 228 studies on ship recycling indexed in Scopus. Employing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) methodology for its robustness in comprehensive literature analysis, this review uncovers key insights into prominent countries, authors, journals, collaborations, topics, and historical trends in ship recycling research, thereby extending the scope of previous reviews. Notably, major contributions from Turkey, India, Bangladesh, the USA, and China focus on environmental impact studies, reflecting urgent global sustainability concerns. The review discusses commonly adopted methodologies such as Life Cycle Assessment and Elemental Analysis, shedding light on their application in this field. Through thematic analysis across 8 categories, future research pathways are identified, highlighting crucial areas such as continuous environmental monitoring, innovative renewable energy extraction from end-of-life vessels, and the need for human factors in ship recycling. This comprehensive synthesis of existing knowledge and identification of emergent research needs and opportunities serve as a foundational resource for impactful future research and informed policymaking, particularly in aligning with global environmental and sustainability goals. Researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders in maritime safety and environmental sustainability may find the knowledge gained from this systematic literature review insightful.

Abstract:China's circular economy has made notable progress since the 21st century and shaped various industry segments. Among these, ship recycling has been particularly outstanding as it evolved exceptionally fast and assumed an internationally leading role. In this article, we present field survey findings on recycling standards and recovery capacities regarding the material flows at Chinese shipbreaking yards, which overall perform comparatively sustainable. However, recent policy and market developments have induced the sector's decline, which at present seems to threaten the very fundamentals of circular economic management for obsolete vessels in China. Given these limited prospects for traditional recycling approaches in the near future, the article proceeds to evaluate alternative circular economy management options for Chinese ship recycling facilities to manage end-of-life vessels. Based on quantifications of hidden potentials in ship supply, value and material contributions to the domestic circular economy, technical and market specific conditions for material recovery as well as other circular economy practices, we find that ship repair and refurbishment may offer the most promising alternative to recycling for Chinese shipbreaking yards.

Abstract:The offshore harnessing of oil and gas resources is made possible by massive infrastructures installed at sea. At the end-of-life stage, in the absence of new uses for offshore installations, decommissioning proceedings usually take place, requiring the removal and final disposal of all materials. In Brazilian waters, decommissioning is hampered by high costs. The offshore wind-power sector has arisen as a new clean power source, in line with worldwide de-carbonization initiatives. In this context, we propose an innovative approach suggesting offshore wind power projects as an alternative to the removal and final disposal of infrastructures, a potential solution to Brazilian offshore decommissioning. In this article we report on the assessment of structures at the end of their lifecycle along with decommissioning cost estimation. Then, we explore wind turbine installation viability along the Brazilian coast and estimate the levelized cost of energy for each wind turbine. Finally, the results allow us to conduct a critical analysis of customary decommissioning versus the repurposing of infrastructures as offshore wind power project sites in two scenarios involving site repurposing. Our main results indicate that the CapEx discount rate of wind power projects offsetting decommissioning is considerable, as are the benefits of delaying decommissioning in terms of reduced carbon emissions and the social effects of increased local employment rates, through the repurposing of offshore oil and gas infrastructures.

Sterol analyses point to a moderate level of sewage contamination, while n-alkanes analyses indicated contamination by petroleum in an early stage of biodegradation. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons analyses pointed to a mixture of contributions for the organic matter, which were predominantly found for petrogenic and pyrolytic sources. The quantification of trace metals indicated a low risk to the environment, except for As, which was identified as displaying moderate contamination. During the analysis of all biomarkers, the sediment collected near one of the shipyards was the most affected. These results enable comprehension of the level of contamination in an important Brazilian port and the need to develop remediation policies.

Abstract:There is growing social pressure for organizations to reduce their rates of consumption ofnonrenewable natural resources and in parallel, to also reduce the release of post-production and postconsumptionwaste to landfills, water bodies and air, thereby causing damage to the environment. Torespond to the pressure it is necessary that organizations' operations prioritize the "3R" goals: Reduce,Reuse and Recycle.In this context, the so called reverse logistics flows have grown in importance in the study of supplychains. Examples are the components and materials that are collected after they are consumed or used.Instead of being sent to the landfill companies use reverse logistics to transport them back in supplychains to be reused or, recycled and reincorporated as secondary input material for new production.This article aims, through the review of related legislation in Brazil, relevant literature and a numberof Brazilian and international case studies to develop a basic framework to be used in the developmentand implementation of reverse logistics systems (RLS).DOI: 10.12660/joscmv6n1p1-25URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.12660/joscmv6n1p1-25
