Abstract:have previously been recorded (Symington et al., 1958; Symington, 1959). The microscopical appearances in fact resembled those found in the adrenogenital syndrome, in which condition there is an excess of corticotrophin. It has been suggested that Cushing's syndrome may be due to hypersensitivity of the adrenals to corticotrophin, which is not present in excessive amounts (Christy, Wallace, and Jailer, 1955). A raised urinary pregnanetriol is characteristic of adrenal hyperplasia due to the adrenogenital syndrome. In this case, however, the mean ratio of the 11desoxy/ 11-oxygenated ketogenic steroids was 0.35 (Table II), which is normal. The ratio of these fractions in the adrenogenital syndrome is much higher and averages 2.3 (Hill, 1960). The responses to 9a-fluoro-16a-hydroxyprednisolone and A.C.T.H., together with the negative Patterson test for dehydroisoandrosterone, indicated that this boy was suffering from adrenocortical hyperplasia and not from an adrenal adenoma or carcinoma. The prognosis in Cushing's syndrome due to adrenocortical hyperplasia recorded in adults is bad and the average expectation of life without treatment is about five years (Bishop, 1954). Bilateral total adrenalectomy is the treatment of choice, and in our opinion the anterior transverse upper abdominal approach is a highly satisfactory one for this procedure (Aird and Helman, 1955). Partial adrenalectomy is unreliable, as the patients are apt either to relapse or to require maintenance cortisone, anyway, in order to prevent adrenal crises. The results of total adrenalectomy on this boy have been most satisfactory and he has been very well for the past 20 months on small maintenance doses of cortisone and fludrocortisone. He now has the normal appearances and vigour of a boy of 12. His genitalia are developing with puberty, which seems to be taking place normally. He started to grow four months after adrenalectomy and he now shows a pubertal spurt of growth.
The Metabolic Effect of Fructose on Normal Rats in A Mild Dose with Glucose and Saccharose As Control

Abstract:AIMS:To study the metabolic effects of fructose, glucose and saccharose in a moderate dose by analyzing changes of blood indicators, pancreas inflammation, liver fat accumulation and intestinal microbiota in normal Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats.SUBJECTS AND METHODS:Six-week-old rats were assigned to four groups (n = 10), which were gavaged with normalsaline (Con), glucose dissolved in normal saline (Glu), saccharose-glucose dissolved in normal saline (Sac), and fructose dissolved in normal saline (Fru) for 20 weeks.RESULTS:No significant differences in body weight and blood parameters including total cholesterol (TC), total triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), lipase (LPS) and free fatty acid (FFA) among the Con, Glu, Sac and the Fru group. The fructose can significantly (P < 0.05) decrease fasting and postprandial blood glucose increase compared to glucose, and the risk of pancreas inflammation and liver fat accumulation induced by fructose is lower than glucose in rats. We found there were no significant differences in intestinal microbial diversity. At the family level, rats in the Glu group had a relatively higher abundance of Peptostreptococcaceae and rats in the Fru group had a relatively higher abundance of Bacteroidaceae. Moreover, the proportions of Peptostreptococcaceae romboutsia and Staphylococcus lentus in the Glu group were significantly higher than in the Fru group, while the proportions of Lachnospira; Lachnospiraceae blautia, Bacteroides and Cellulosilyticus in the Fru group were significantly higher than in the Glu group. The concentration of isobutyric acid was relatively lower in all the sugar treated groups than in the Con. A significant decrease in isobutyric acid was found on comparing the Fru group to the Con group (P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:Fructose, glucose and sucrose made no significant changes on rats in body weight, blood indicators, organ index and bacterial diversity. Moreover, fructose can potentially attenuate fasting and postprandial blood-glucose increase, pancreas inflammation and liver-fat accumulation when compared to glucose in mild doses. The relative abundance of six kinds of bacterial genera was found significantly different between rats fed on fructose and glucose.

Abstract:Background: Fucoidans extracted from sea cucumber Pearsonothuria graeffei (fuc-Pg) are rich in 4-O-sulfation, and have been shown to be potential functional polysaccharides for preventing metabolic syndromes. Objective: The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of fuc-Pg on the prevention of obesity and its underlying mechanism. Method: Mice were fed a normal diet, high-fat diet (HFD), HFD plus low and high dosage of fuc-Pg, and HFD plus simvastatin for 8 weeks. Results: fuc-Pg intervention could significantly decrease weight gain and fat accumulation in the HFD-fed mice. Moreover, fuc-Pg improved serum lipid profile by decreasing serum concentrations of TG, TC, LDL-C, sCD36, ApoB48, and ApoB100 compared with the HFD group. HFD-induced upregulation of intestinal CD36, FABP-1, P-ERK1, and the ratio of p-ERK/ERK was reversed by the fuc-Pg treatment. Moreover, fuc-Pg improved the normal function of white adipose tissue by increasing the expression of UCP1, PPAR-γ, and PGC-1α in the HFD-fed mice. Furthermore, fuc-Pg alleviated systemic inflammation by reducing serum pro-inflammatory factors and breaking the TLR4/NF-κB pathway in both the colon and liver. Conclusion: Fuc-Pg is a potential functional polysaccharide for preventing obesity and systemic inflammation caused by HFD.

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the mRNA expression levels of Cd36 in adipose and hepatic tissues, in rats with NAFLD after the consumption of sucrose for 10 and 20 weeks. Methods: Twenty Wistar rats, all nearly 21 days old were divided into two experimental groups (NAFLD-10 and NAFLD-20), that received a standard diet (2014 Teklad Global) plus 30% sucrose in their drinking water for 10 and 20 weeks and the control groups (C Groups). Variables such as body weight, food intakes, and serum parameters were measured. Adipose and hepatic tissues were extirpated; some tissue was preserved in formalin and some at -70 °C until analysis. Histological analysis was carried out, and the Cd36 mRNA expression levels were determined. Results: The rats in the NAFLD-10 and NAFLD-20 groups showed a significative increase in abdominal fat, triglycerides, free fatty acids, insulin, AST, ALT, uric acid and HOMA index; as well as changes in the cellular dynamics in adipose tissue, (adipocytes hypertrophic: >1500 µm2) with respect to the control groups (P<0.05). The histological analysis showed development of mild portal hepatitis in rats of the NAFLD-10 group and grade 1 hepatic steatosis with mild portal inflammation in rats of the NAFLD-20 group. Finally, Cd36 mRNA expression levels were significantly increased in hepatic tissue after 10 (1.5-fold) and 20 (3.5-fold) weeks of sucrose ingestion (P<0.05). Conclusion: mRNA expression is a molecular mechanism involved in the development of NAFLD associated with obesity in rats consuming sucrose. However, there was increased Cd36 mRNA expression only in hepatic tissue while in hypertrophic adipose tissue mRNA levels remained unchanged.

Abstract:Purpose We evaluated the efficacy and safety of momelotinib, a potent and selective Janus kinase 1 and 2 inhibitor (JAKi), compared with ruxolitinib, in JAKi-naïve patients with myelofibrosis. Patients and Methods Patients (N = 432) with high risk or intermediate-2 risk or symptomatic intermediate-1 risk myelofibrosis were randomly assigned to receive 24 weeks of treatment with momelotinib 200 mg once daily or ruxolitinib 20 mg twice a day (or per label), after which all patients could receive open-label momelotinib. The primary end point was a ≥ 35% reduction in spleen volume at 24 weeks of therapy. Secondary end points were rates of symptom response and effects on RBC transfusion requirements. Results A ≥ 35% reduction in spleen volume at week 24 was achieved by a similar proportion of patients in both treatment arms: 26.5% of the momelotinib group and 29% of the ruxolitinib group (noninferior; P = .011). A ≥ 50% reduction in the total symptom score was observed in 28.4% and 42.2% of patients who received momelotinib and ruxolitinib, respectively, indicating that noninferiority was not met ( P = .98). Transfusion rate, transfusion independence, and transfusion dependence were improved with momelotinib (all with nominal P ≤ .019). The most common grade ≥ 3 hematologic abnormalities in either group were thrombocytopenia and anemia. Grade ≥ 3 infections occurred in 7% of patients who received momelotinib and 3% of patients who received ruxolitinib. Treatment-emergent peripheral neuropathy occurred in 10% of patients who received momelotinib (all grade ≤ 2) and 5% of patients who received ruxolitinib (all grade ≤ 3). Conclusion In JAKi-naïve patients with myelofibrosis, 24 weeks of momelotinib treatment was noninferior to ruxolitinib for spleen response but not for symptom response. Momelotinib treatment was associated with a reduced transfusion requirement.

Abstract:Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), obesity and related chronic diseases remain one of the major non-communicable diseases with high mortality rates worldwide. While dietary sugars are known to be responsible for insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome (MetS), the underlying pathophysiological effects of sustained fructose consumption requires further elucidation. We hypothesize that, certain bioactive compounds (i.e. punicalagin and ellagic acid) from dietary pomegranate could counteract the harmful effects of sustained fructose consumption in terms of obesity and liver damage. The present study aimed to elucidate both the molecular mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology associated with fructose intake and the effect of a punicalagin-rich commercial pomegranate dietary supplement (P) used as nutritional strategy to alleviate fructose-induced metabolic impairments. Thus, nineteen Wistar rats fed on a basal commercial feed were supplemented with either 30% (w/v) fructose in drinking water (F; n=7) or 30% (w/v) fructose solution plus 0.2% (w/v) P (F+P; n=6) for 10 weeks. Results were compared to a control group fed on the basal diet and provided with drinking water (C; n=6). Body weights and energy intake were weekly registered. P supplementation decreased fat depots counteracted the dyslipidemia caused by F and improved markers of liver injury including steatosis. The study of the microbiota by metagenomics and the urine by untargeted MS-based metabolomics, revealed microbial metabolites from P that may be responsible for these health benefits.

Abstract:Inulin-type fructans (ITF) are known for their capacity to modulate gut microbiota, energy metabolism and to improve glycemia in several animal models of obesity, and in humans. The potential contribution of ITF as modulators of sugar digestion by host enzymes has not been evaluated yet. A sucrose challenge has been performed on naive mice fed a standard diet supplemented with or without native chicory inulin (Fibruline 5%) for 3 weeks. The area under the curve of glycemia as well as sucrase activity in the small intestine were lowered after inulin treatment. Pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene confirmed important changes in gut microbiota (mostly in favor of Blautia genus) due to inulin extract supplementation. Interestingly, the suppressive effect of inulin extract on postprandial glycemia also occurred when inulin was directly added to the sucrose solution, suggesting that the effect on sucrose digestion did not require chronic inulin administration. In vitro tests confirmed a direct inhibition of sucrase enzyme by the inulin extract, thereby suggesting that native chicory inulin, in addition to its well-known prebiotic effect, is also able to decrease the digestibility of carbohydrates, a phenomenon that can contribute in the control of post prandial glycemia. We may not exclude that the sucrose escaping the digestion could also contribute to the changes in the gut microbiota after a chronic treatment with inulin.

Abstract:The study was designed to investigate the antihypertensive effect of total flavones extracted from seed residues of Hippophae rhamnoides L. (TFH-SR) and its underlying mechanism in chronic sucrose-fed rats by evaluating its ability to regulate insulin and angiotensin || levels. Feeding of high-sucrose diet (HS: 77% of kcal from carbohydrate, 16% from protein and 6% from lipid, respectively) for 6 weeks resulted in significant rise in systolic blood pressure (SBP) by 25.60%, plasma insulin by 114.24%, triglycerides by 85.14% and activated angiotensin || contents in heart and kidney. However, TFH-SR treatment significantly suppressed the elevated hypertension, hyperinsulinemia and dyslipidemia. Furthermore, TFH-SR (especially at the dose of 150mg/kg/day) increased the circulatory blood angiotensin || level as effective as angiotensin || receptor blocker. These results indicated that TFH-SR exerted its antihypertensive effects at least in part by improving insulin sensitivity and blocking angiotensin || signal pathway. Findings of the present study suggested that TFH-SR might prove to be of potential use in the management of hyperinsulinemia in non-diabetic state with cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract:The combined effects of low-molecular-weight fucoidan (LMF) and fucoxanthin (Fx) in terms of antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic, and hepatoprotective activities were investigated in a mouse model of type II diabetes. The intake of LMF, Fx, and LMF + Fx lowered the blood sugar and fasting blood sugar levels, and increased serum adiponectin levels. The significant decrease in urinary sugar was only observed in LMF + Fx supplementation. LMF and Fx had ameliorating effects on the hepatic tissue of db/db mice by increasing hepatic glycogen and antioxidative enzymes, and LMF was more effective than Fx at improving hepatic glucose metabolism. As for glucose and lipid metabolism in the adipose tissue, the expression of insulin receptor substrate (IRS)-1, glucose transporter (GLUT), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), and uncoupling protein (UCP)-1 mRNAs in the adipose tissue of diabetic mice was significantly upregulated by Fx and LMF + Fx, and levels of inflammatory adipocytokines, such as adiponectin, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6), were significantly modulated only by LMF + Fx supplementation. The efficacy of LMF + Fx supplementation on the decrease in urinary sugar and on glucose and lipid metabolism in the white adipose tissue of db/db mice was better than that of Fx or LMF alone, indicating the occurrence of a synergistic effect of LMF and Fx.

High sucrose diet-induced dysbiosis of gut microbiota promotes fatty liver and hyperlipidemia in rats

Abstract:Excess sucrose intake has been found to be a major factor in the development of metabolic syndrome, especially in promoting nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The excess fructose is believed to targets the liver to promote de novo lipogenesis, as described in major biochemistry textbooks. On the contrary, in this study, we explored the possible involvement of gut microbiota in excess sucrose-induced lipid metabolic disorders, to validate a novel mechanism by which excess sucrose causes hepatic lipid metabolic disorders via alterations to the gut microbial community structure. Wistar male rats were fed either a control starch diet or a high-sucrose diet for 4 weeks. Half of the rats in each group were treated with an antibiotic cocktail delivered via drinking water for the entire experimental period. After 4 weeks, rats fed with the high-sucrose diet showed symptoms of fatty liver and hyperlipidemia. The architecture of cecal microbiota was altered in rats fed with high-sucrose diet as compared to the control group, with traits including increased ratios of the phyla Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes, reduced α-diversity, and diurnal oscillations changes. Antibiotic administration rescued high-sucrose diet-induced lipid accumulation in the both blood and liver. Levels of two microbial metabolites, formate and butyrate, were reduced in rats fed with the high-sucrose diet. These volatile short-chain fatty acids might be responsible for the sucrose-induced fatty liver and hyperlipidemia. Our results indicate that changes in the gut microbiota induced by a high-sucrose diet would promote the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease via its metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids.
Distinct approaches to inhibit fructose-induced obesity

Abstract:Abstract Background Obesity is primarily a consequence of eating disorder. Drugs have been confirmed effective for weight loss more or less related to the functional connectivity in neural networks and metabolic pattern. Functional connectivity, amplitudes of neural signals, and the major ways of ATP productions were analyzed to discover the mechanisms of Metformin and Dapagliflozin. Methods Male ob/ob mice were divided into high-fat-diet fed (HFD), high-fat-diet fed with Metformin, and high-fat-diet fed with Dapagliflozin groups. Functional connectivity amplitude of low-frequency signal fluctuations and rCBV quantification were statistically analyzed in the linear mixed model, meanwhile, metabolic pattern of intestinal cells was also tested. Results Our results showed that Bold signaling responses, functional connectivity, and rCBV quantification tended to be attenuated in the Metformin-treated group compared to the HFD and Dapagliflozin groups. And only Dapagliflozin prevented fructose-induced hyper survival of intestinal cells and hypertrophy of intestinal villus by reducing glycolysis levels. Both Metformin and Dapagliflozin are effective for weight loss. Conclusions Our findings showed distinct mechanisms by which Dapagliflozin and Metformin inhibit obesity related eating disorders, combined use of both drugs Dapagliflozin and Metformin may be more beneficial for clinical improvement in fructose-induced obesity.

Abstract:Hyperglycemia caused by excessive intake of sucrose leads to lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes. Administration of a lactic acid bacterial strain to mice suppresses sucrose-induced hyperglycemia, but evidence for a similar effect in humans is lacking. Here we show that Enterococcus faecalis YM0831, identified using an in vivo screening system with silkworms, suppressed sucrose-induced hyperglycemia in humans. E. faecalis YM0831 also suppressed glucose-induced hyperglycemia in silkworms. E. faecalis YM0831 inhibited glucose uptake by the human intestinal epithelial cell line Caco-2. A transposon insertion mutant of E. faecalis YM0831, which showed decreased inhibitory activity against glucose uptake by Caco-2 cells, also exhibited decreased inhibitory activity against both sucrose-induced and glucose-induced hyperglycemia in silkworms. In human clinical trials, oral ingestion of E. faecalis YM0831 suppressed the increase in blood glucose in a sucrose tolerance test. These findings suggest that E. faecalis YM0831 inhibits intestinal glucose transport and suppresses sucrose-induced hyperglycemia in humans.

Abstract:Sugar reduction and sugar control are advocated and gaining popularity around the world. Sucrose, as the widely consumed ingredient in our daily diet, has been reported a relation to gastrointestinal diseases. However, the role of sucrose in inflammatory bowel disease remains controversial. Hence, our study aimed to elucidate the potential role of three doses of sucrose on DSS-induced colitis in C57BL/6 mice and the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that low-dose sucrose intervention alleviated colitis in mice, reducing the expression of inflammatory cytokines and repairing mucosal damages. In contrast, high-dose sucrose intervention exacerbated colitis. Furthermore, three doses of sucrose administration markedly altered gut microbiota composition. Notably, the low-dose sucrose restored microbial dysfunction and enhanced the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Specifically, the abundance of SCFAs-producing bacteria Faecalibaculum, Bacteroides, and Romboutsia were increased significantly in the LOW group. Consistently, PPAR-γ, activated by SCFAs, was elevated in the LOW group, thereby inhibiting the MAPK/NF-κB pathway. Together, our study demonstrates the differential effects of sucrose on colitis at different doses, providing a scientific basis for measuring and modifying the safe intake level of sugar and providing favorable evidence for implementing sugar reduction policies.

Abstract:Diacylglycerols (DAG) and ceramides have been suggested as early predictors of insulin resistance. This study was aimed to examine the combined effects of fish oil (FO) and grape seed extract (GSE) on hepatic endogenous antioxidants, DAG and ceramides in diet-induced early stages of insulin resistance. Thirty-five rats were fed one of the following diets: (1) a standard diet (STD group), (2) a high-fat high-sucrose diet (HFHS group), (3) an HFHS diet enriched with FO (FO group), (4) an HFHS diet enriched with GSE (GSE group) or (5) an HFHS diet enriched with FO and GSE (FO + GSE group). In the liver, endogenous antioxidants were measured using spectrophotometric and fluorometric techniques, and non-targeted lipidomics was conducted for the assessment of DAG and ceramides. After 24 weeks, the FO + GSE group showed increased glutathione peroxidase activity, as well as monounsaturated fatty acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid-containing DAG, and long-chain fatty acid-containing ceramides abundances compared to the STD group. The FO and GSE combination induced similar activation of the antioxidant system and bioactive lipid accumulation in the liver than the HFHS diet without supplementation. In addition, the FO and GSE combination increased the abundances of polyunsaturated fatty acid-containing DAG in the liver.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to improve insulin sensitivity in fructose-treated animals by ingestion of flavonoid quercetin. Several signs of insulin resistance have been developed in rats by drinking 10% fructose solution for 9 weeks. The effect of 6-week-gavage-administrated quercetin (20 mg/kg/day in 1% methyl cellulose solution) was monitored. Rats of the control groups received methyl cellulose vehicle as well. The most striking result of the quercetin treatment was the normalization of the fructose solution drinking to the level of drinking water intake. In addition, quercetin supplementation considerably decreased the plasma glucose and Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) index in rats consuming fructose. Surprisingly, fructose ingestion did not elevate plasma uric acid, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, nitrotyrosine, or advanced glycation end products fluorescence. Instead, a reduction of the above parameters was observed. In summary, these results indicate that quercetin supplementation reduces fructose drinking and decreases plasma glucose and the HOMA-IR index. Furthermore, methyl cellulose, in combination with fructose, causes uric acid - lowering, antioxidant and anti-glycation effects. Thus, methyl cellulose possibly shifts fructose metabolism in favor of the utilization of antioxidant features of fructose. Our results call for using methyl cellulose in sweetened beverages and other sweetened food.

Abstract:Aim: Inulin, a soluble dietary fiber, is a source of energy for the host while the metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), produced in the gut through bacterial fermentation exerts the anti-obesity effect. In this study, we aimed to apply a metabolomics approach and clarify the role of this soluble dietary fiber on glucose and lipid metabolism under the calorie-matched condition. Materials and methods: Eight-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat/high-sucrose based diet containing maltodextrin or inulin for 12 weeks through calorie-matched pair feeding. We evaluated glucose tolerance, and energy expenditure using indirect calorimetry, comprehensive metabolites in the content of jejunum, feces, and portal vein serum using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and histological changes in the adipose tissue. Results: The inulin group exhibited reduced visceral adipose tissue and smaller size of visceral adipocyte. It also exhibited improved glucose tolerance and an increase in energy expenditure. Reflecting the results of fermentation, the metabolomics analysis revealed an increase in the succinic acid and SCFA contents in both feces and portal vein serum in the inulin group. Conclusions: Inulin altered the gut metabolites and reduced visceral adipose tissue, thereby resulting in improved glucose tolerance.
Resistant dextrin improves high-fat-high-fructose diet induced insulin resistance

Abstract:Abstract Background Insulin resistance is an important defect associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Many studies have been reported that dietary fiber exerts beneficial metabolic effects. Resistant dextrin is a soluble fiber. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of resistant dextrin on high-fat-high-fructose diet induced obese mice and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Methods Seventeen 4-week-old male C57BL/6 J mice were fed a normal diet (ND) or HFHFD for 22 weeks, and were gavaged with resistant dextrin (5 g/kg) for 10 weeks. Glucose tolerance test (GTT) and insulin tolerance test (ITT) were performed, serum fasting insulin (FINS) and serum biochemical parameters were determined, the contents of triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) in liver tissues were determined by enzymatic method. The pathological changes in liver were detected by HE staining. Real time PCR and Western blot were used to detect the expression of insulin signaling pathway and the fatty acid β oxidation pathway related genes and proteins respectively. The gut microbiota were analyzed via 16 s rRNA sequencing. Results Resistant dextrin significantly decreased serum FINS, improved serum lipid profiles, reduced the contents of liver TG and TC. The insulin signaling pathway and the fatty acid β oxidation pathway were promoted. The abundance of metabolically beneficial bacteria such as Prevotella and Akkermansia in the intestinal flora of the resistant dextrin group were increased. Conclusions Resistant dextrin can significantly ameliorate liver insulin resistance, improve serum lipid levels, as well as reduce hepatic lipid deposition. The modulation of gut microbiota might be responsible for the beneficial effects of resistant dextrin.

Feeding pattern, biochemical, anthropometric and histological effects of prolonged ad libitum access to sucrose, honey and glucose-fructose solutions in Wistar rats

Abstract:BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The exposure to sucrose in rats has mimic abnormalities attributed to metabolic syndrome (MetS). The effects of honey bee and "free" glucose and fructose, have not been explored in this context. The aim was to expose Wistar rodents to sucrose solution (SS), honey solution (HS) and fructose/glucose solution (GFS) at 30% to assess their effects.SUBJECTS/METHODS: HS (n = 10), SS (n = 10) and GFS (n = 10) groups were formed. Solutions were ad libitum along 14-weeks.RESULTS: Between solutions consumptions, honey was significantly 42% higher (P = 0.000), while similar consumption was observed among GFS and SS. The feeding pattern of HS consumption was irregular along experiment; while the food intake pattern showed the similar trend among groups along time. Non statistical differences were obtained in any biochemical and anthropometric measure, however, a higher concentration of leptin (721 ± 507 pg/mL), lower concentration of total cholesterol (TC; 48.87 ± 2.41 mg/100 mL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL; 16.47 ± 6.55 mg/100 mL) and triglycerides (82.37 ± 32.77 mg/100 mL) was obtained in SS group. For anthropometric values, HS showed less total adipose tissue (AT; average 26 vs. 31-33 g) and adiposity index (average 6.11 vs. 7.6). Due to sugar-sweetened beverages consumption increases the risk for the development of chronic diseases; correlations between fluid intake and anthropometric and biochemical parameters were assessed. A moderate correlation was obtained in groups with the weight of total AT and solution intake; for the weight gain in GFS group and for triglycerides in HS and GFS. The highest hepatic tissue damage was observed in SS group with multiple intracytoplasmic vacuoles, atypia changes, moderate pleomorphism and hepatocellular necrosis.CONCLUSIONS: In spite of the significantly higher consumption of HS, biochemical, anthropometrical and histological effects were not remarkably different in comparision to other sweeteners.
