Abstract:The amount of 137Cs released by the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident of 11 March 2011 was inversely estimated by integrating an atmospheric dispersion model, an a priori source term, and map of deposition recorded by aircraft. An a posteriori source term refined finer (hourly) variations comparing with the a priori term, and estimated 137Cs released 11 March to 2 April to be 8.12 PBq. Although time series of the a posteriori source term was generally similar to those of the a priori source term, notable modifications were found in the periods when the a posteriori source term was well-constrained by the observations. Spatial pattern of 137Cs deposition with the a posteriori source term showed better agreement with the 137Cs deposition monitored by aircraft. The a posteriori source term increased 137Cs deposition in the Naka-dori region (the central part of Fukushima Prefecture) by 32.9%, and considerably improved the underestimated a priori 137Cs deposition. Observed values of deposition measured at 16 stations and surface atmospheric concentrations collected on a filter tape of suspended particulate matter were used for validation of the a posteriori results. A great improvement was found in surface atmospheric concentration on 15 March; the a posteriori source term reduced root mean square error, normalized mean error, and normalized mean bias by 13.4, 22.3, and 92.0% for the hourly values, respectively. However, limited improvements were observed in some periods and areas due to the difficulty in simulating accurate wind fields and the lack of the observational constraints.

Abstract:After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (F1NPS) accident, 137 Cs activity concentrations have not yet decreased to pre-accident levels because of direct release from the site and fluvial discharges of 137 Cs deposited on land. It is necessary to consider dispersion processes in the coastal area to understand the impact of multiple river discharges and direct release. To achieve this goal, we carried out oceanic dispersion simulations that considered direct release and fluvial discharges and compared the results with the annual averages of observed data. We assumed that particulate 137 Cs discharged from rivers to the ocean quickly resuspended and re-leached after coagulation and precipitation, and that all of the 137 Cs was dispersed. The reproducibility of results was improved by considering fluvial discharges of particulate 137 Cs at all sites between 2013 and 2016, except near the F1NPS. In other words, particulate 137 Cs discharged from rivers was found to influence the results of ocean surface activity concentrations within a relatively short period of time. The impact of direct release was dominant for the observed 137 Cs activity concentrations adjacent to the F1NPS, which was used to estimate direct releases.

One-year, regional-scale simulation of 137 Cs radioactivity in the ocean following the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

Abstract:Abstract. A series of accidents at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant following the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011 resulted in the release of radioactive materials to the ocean by two major pathways: direct release from the accident site and atmospheric deposition. A 1 yr, regional-scale simulation of 137Cs activity in the ocean offshore of Fukushima was carried out, the sources of radioactivity being direct release, atmospheric deposition, and the inflow of 137Cs deposited into the ocean by atmospheric deposition outside the domain of the model. Direct releases of 137Cs were estimated for 1 yr after the accident by comparing simulated results and measured activities adjacent to the accident site. The contributions of each source were estimated by analysis of 131I/137Cs and 134Cs/137Cs activity ratios and comparisons between simulated results and measured activities of 137Cs. The estimated total amounts of directly released 131I, 137Cs, and 137Cs were 11.1 ± 2.2 PBq, 3.5 ± 0.7 PBq, and 3.6 ± 0.7 PBq, respectively. Simulated 137Cs activities attributable to direct release were in good agreement with measured 137Cs activities not only adjacent to the accident site, but also in a wide area in the model domain, therefore this implies that the estimated direct release rate was reasonable. Employment of improved nudging data by JCOPE2 improved both the offshore transport result and the reproducibility of 137Cs activities 30 km offshore. On the other hand, simulated 137Cs activities attributable to atmospheric deposition were low compared to measured activities. The rate of atmospheric deposition into the ocean was underestimated because of a lack of measurements of deposition into the ocean when atmospheric deposition rates were being estimated. Simulated 137Cs activities attributable to the inflow of 137Cs deposited into the ocean outside the domain of the model were in good agreement with measured activities in the open ocean within the model domain after June 2012. The consideration of inflow is important to simulate the 137Cs activity in this model region in the later period of the simulation. The contribution of inflow increased with time and was dominant (more than 99%) by the end of February 2012. The activity of directly released 137Cs, however, decreased exponentially with time and was detectable only in the coastal zone by the end of February 2012.

Abstract:Concentrations of the radionuclides, U, Pu, and Cs were measured in water samples (10-20 L) to study analyte dispersion and migration following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. A total of 8 water samples including oceanic water and paddy-field water were collected in the vicinity of the plant. Determinations of U, Pu and Cs isotopes were performed by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and γ-ray spectrometry. The 236U/238U atom ratio was in the range 1.83-8.20 × 10-9 for fresh water and around 0.57 × 10-9 for seawater while the concentration of 236U was about 104-105 and 106 atoms/kg, respectively. Plutonium (239,240Pu) was detected in one riverine sample and the marine samples at very low levels and with large uncertainty. The concentrations of 137Cs in fresh riverine samples were 0.02-0.46 Bq/kg which are more than three orders of magnitude larger than the global fallout level. As for seawater samples within 80 km offshore of the FDNPP, the concentrations of 137Cs were 10-20 times higher than that of the Japan Sea water. Also 134Cs and 137Cs were of similar concentrations in all samples. The results show that volatile and refractory nuclides such as Cs, U and Pu exist in the dissolved phase, which can be readily assimilated by plants/humans. However the environmental impact of Pu and U in the vicinity of the FDNPP is considered to be low in comparison to that of the volatile radionuclide Cs.

Radioactive Cs in the estuary sediments near Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant

Abstract:The migration and dispersion of radioactive Cs (mainly (134)Cs and (137)Cs) are of critical concern in the area surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP). Considerable uncertainty remains in understanding the properties and dynamics of radioactive Cs transport by surface water, particularly during rainfall-induced flood events to the ocean. Physical and chemical properties of unique estuary sediments, collected from the Kuma River, 4.0km south of the FDNPP, were quantified in this study. These were deposited after storm events and now occur as dried platy sediments on beach sand. The platy sediments exhibit median particle sizes ranging from 28 to 32μm. There is increasing radioactivity towards the bottom of the layers deposited; approximately 28 and 38Bqg(-1) in the upper and lower layers, respectively. The difference in the radioactivity is attributed to a larger number of particles associated with radioactive Cs in the lower part of the section, suggesting that radioactive Cs in the suspended soils transported by surface water has decreased over time. Sequential chemical extractions showed that ~90% of (137)Cs was strongly bound to the residual fraction in the estuary samples, whereas 60~80% of (137)Cs was bound to clays in the six paddy soils. This high concentration in the residual fraction facilitates ease of transport of clay and silt size particles through the river system. Estuary sediments consist of particles <100μm. Radioactive Cs desorption experiments using the estuary samples in artificial seawater revealed that 3.4±0.6% of (137)Cs was desorbed within 8h. More than 96% of (137)Cs remained strongly bound to clays. Hence, particle size is a key factor that determines the travel time and distance during the dispersion of (137)Cs in the ocean.

Abstract:Large amounts of radiocesium were released into marine environments following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011. Released radiocesium influenced not only marine environment but also marine biota in Fukushima. Since marine biota as fisheries products is important for Japanese market, it is important to assess the distribution of radiocesium in coastal environment off Fukushima for safety concerns of radioactive contamination. Radiocesium concentrations in sediments are important for understanding fishing ground conditions and for proving the safety of fisheries products in Fukushima. In this study, monthly monitoring data collected from May 2011 to March 2020 were analyzed to describe the temporal variability of 137Cs concentrations in coastal sediments off Fukushima (total of 3647 samples from eight lines at depths of 7-125 m off Fukushima, and three sites in Matsukawa-ura Lagoon). The 137Cs concentration in sediment showed a decreasing trend, but our nonlinear model fitting suggested that this rate of decrease had slowed down. Additionally, 137Cs concentrations were up to 4.08 times greater in shallow sampling sites (7, 10, 20 m depth) following heavy rainfall events (before five months vs. after five months), such as typhoons. These observations were consistent with increasing input from particulate 137Cs fluxes from rivers and increasing dissolved 137Cs concentrations in seawater. Finally, our numerical modeling suggested that riverine 137Cs input could maintain 137Cs concentrations in coastal sediment. These results indicate that riverine 137Cs input following heavy rainfall events is the main factor for maintaining 137Cs concentrations in coastal sediments near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

Abstract:In bottom-sediment samples collected in 2012 from a coastal strip (∼30 km × 120 km) off the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), radiocesium activity concentrations were generally higher south of the FDNPP, with high activity concentration patches in the north. In periodic surveys conducted at nearshore sites during 2012-2016, no clear temporal trends were observed in radiocesium activity concentrations in seawater or bottom sediment, and activity concentrations were higher in fish than in invertebrates. During 2012-2014, radiocesium activity concentrations tended to decrease in fish, but during 2012-2013 in the south, some increases were observed. Radiocesium activity concentrations were significantly higher in some fish (e.g., Okamejei kenojei) directly offshore and south of the FDNPP than in the north. Activity concentrations in fish stomach contents were significantly correlated with those in muscle tissue, suggesting that the consumption of contaminated prey contributed greatly to radiocesium contamination in demersal fish.

Abstract:The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power reactor units that generated large amounts of airborne discharges during the period of March 12–21, 2011 were identified individually by analyzing the combination of measured 134Cs/137Cs depositions on ground surfaces and atmospheric transport and deposition simulations. Because the values of 134Cs/137Cs are different in reactor units owing to fuel burnup differences, the 134Cs/137Cs ratio measured in the environment was used to determine which reactor unit ultimately contaminated a specific area. Atmospheric dispersion model simulations were used for predicting specific areas contaminated by each dominant release. Finally, by comparing the results from both sources, the specific reactor units that yielded the most dominant atmospheric release quantities could be determined. The major source reactor units were Unit 1 in the afternoon of March 12, 2011, Unit 2 during the period from the late night of March 14 to the morning of March 15, 2011. These results corresponded to those assumed in our previous source term estimation studies. Furthermore, new findings suggested that the major source reactors from the evening of March 15, 2011 were Units 2 and 3 and that the dominant source reactor on March 20, 2011 temporally changed from Unit 3 to Unit 2.

Abstract:The radiocesium ( 137 Cs) distribution between dissolved and particulate phases was examined in river water and coastal seawater as a function of the 137 Cs sorption behavior on suspended particles. Dissolved 137 Cs activity concentrations in the Tomioka River (salinity 30), Fukushima Prefecture, from June 2019 to October 2021 were 3.6–20 Bq/m 3 (geometric mean 11 Bq/m 3 ) and 2.4–86 Bq/m 3 (13 Bq/m 3 ), respectively. Although the suspended particle concentration was lower in the river (0.2–44 mg/L; geometric mean 2 mg/L) than in seawater (0.8–24 mg/L; 6.4 mg/L), the mean 137 Cs activity on suspended particles was 11,000 Bq/kg-dry in the river versus 3200 Bq/kg-dry in seawater. Proportions of ion-exchangeable, organically bound, and refractory fractions of 137 Cs on suspended particles were determined by sequential extraction. The ion-exchangeable fraction accounted for 0.3–2.0% (average: 1.2%) and 0.4–1.3% (0.8%) at the river and port sites, respectively. The organically bound fraction accounted for 0.3–4.8% (1.8%) and 0.1–5.5% (2.1%) at the river and port sites, respectively. In both areas, the refractory fraction accounted for >90% of 137 Cs. Therefore, the small labile 137 Cs fraction on suspended particles in coastal seawater indicates that the mobility of 137 Cs to marine biota is quite low. Synopsis This study is the first to examine radiocesium sorption forms on suspended particles in coastal seawater near the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. It suggests immobility of 137 Cs in suspended particles being incorporated to marine biota.

Abstract:The increase in autoantibodies with age of both experimental animals and humans has been thought to reflect a shift in the antibody repertoire from foreign to self antigens. In mice, before immunization, the age-associated increase in antibodies reactive with a prototypic autoantigen, bromelain-treated autologous erythrocytes (BrMRBC), reflected a 3-fold increase in serum IgM and the number of IgM-secreting spleen cells in old compared with young mice. However, the percentage of the IgM-secreting spleen cell repertoire reactive with BrMRBC in old mice was actually approximately 50% that in young mice. In contrast, after immunization with sheep erythrocytes (SRBC), old mice showed a 5-fold increase in the percentage of IgM-secreting cells reactive with BrMRBC while young mice showed no significant increase. The converse is true for the percentage of IgM-secreting spleen cells in old mice specific for SBRC, which is 10% the number generated by young mice. The increased autoantibody response of old mice is not, however, linked to their poor response to the nominal antigen. Thus, immunization with phosphorylcholine (PC) conjugated keyhole limpet hemocyanin, an antigen that induces a comparable anti-PC response in old and young mice, also induced more autoantibody forming cells in old than young mice. The increased autoantibody response of old mice after immunization can be accounted for by both an increased number of Ig-secreting spleen cells as well as an increased percentage of the expressed repertoire of IgM-secreting spleen cells that react with autoantigens.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Reconstruction of radiocesium levels in sediment off Fukushima: Simulation analysis of bioavailability using parameters derived from observed 137Cs concentrations

Abstract:Radiocesium was released to the North Pacific coastal waters by the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (1FNPP) of the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) in March 2011. Since the radiocesium in the sediment off Fukushima was suggested as a possible source for the transfer of this radionuclide through the benthic food chain, we conducted numerical simulations of 137Cs in sediments off the Fukushima coast by using a model which incorporates dynamic transfer processes between seawater and the labile and refractory fractions in sediment particles. This model reproduced the measured temporal changes of 137Cs concentration in seabed surface sediment off Fukusima coasts, by normalizing the radiocsium transfer between seawater and sediment according to the particle diameter sizes. We found that the 137Cs level in sediment decreased by desorption during the first several months after the accident, followed by a reduction in the labile fraction until the end of 2012. The apparent decrease of the total radiocesium level in surface sediment was estimated to occur at rates of approximately 0.2 y-1 within a 20 km distance from the 1FNPP. The comparison of 137Cs level decreases in the demersal fish and the simulated temporal labile fraction in fine sediment demonstrated that the consideration of radiocesium transfer via sediment is important for determining the 137Cs depuration mechanism in some demersal fish.
Cesium-134 and 137 activities in the central North Pacific Ocean after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

Abstract:Abstract. Surface seawater 134Cs and 137Cs samples were collected in the central and western North Pacific Ocean during the 2 yr after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident to monitor dispersion patterns of these radioisotopes towards the Hawaiian Islands. In the absence of other recent sources and due to its short half-life, only those parts of the Pacific Ocean would have detectable 134Cs values that were impacted by Fukushima releases. Between March and May 2011, 134Cs was not detected around the Hawaiian Islands and Guam. Here, most 137Cs activities (1.2–1.5 Bq m–3) were in the range of expected preexisting levels. Some samples north of the Hawaiian Islands (1.6–1.8 Bq m–3) were elevated above the 23-month baseline established in surface seawater in Hawaii indicating that those might carry atmospheric fallout. The 23-month time-series analysis of surface seawater from Hawaii did not reveal any seasonal variability or trends, with an average activity of 1.46 ± 0.06 Bq m–3 (Station Aloha, 18 values). In contrast, samples collected between Japan and Hawaii contained 134Cs activities in the range of 1–4 Bq m–3, and 137Cs levels were about 2–3 times above the preexisting activities. We found that the southern boundary of the Kuroshio and Kuroshio extension currents represented a boundary for radiation dispersion with higher activities detected within and north of the major currents. The radiation plume has not been detected over the past 2 yr at the main Hawaiian Islands due to the transport patterns across the Kuroshio and Kuroshio extension currents.

Abstract:The dispersion timeline and the specific ratio characterization of airborne radionuclides released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident were investigated based on an analysis of the monitoring data obtained from regional stations and radionuclide stations of the International Monitoring System for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. The comprehensive temporal sequence of airborne radionuclide arrival time at different sites was given, including xenon, iodine, and cesium isotopes, which could be used to validate and evaluate atmospheric transport modeling. Based on the decay time estimation method, the release time and process of radionuclides were calculated and analyzed through activity ratios of I-133 to I-131, Cs-136 to Cs-137, and Cs-134 to Cs-137. It indicated that radioiodine isotopes leaked from the reactors in the early stage after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake occurred, and there were two sources which leaked radiocesium, one is units 1, 2, and 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi NPP and the other is the spent fuel pools with a high possibility. Generally, this study provides some valuable findings and information for further evaluation of the accident and relevant research work.
Analysis of radioactive cesium-enriched particles and measurement of their distribution in marine sediment near Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant

Abstract:Cesium-enriched particles released from the Fukushima Daiich Nuclear Power Plant (NPP1) exist in the Fukushima coastal waters and offshore, and they possibly affect the wide-area distribution of the radioactive cesium measured by the towed spectrometer. Therefore, the distribution of them in marine sediment was measured near NPP1 in November, 2016. We scanned the seafloor using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector. The sediment samples were obtained on the survey line by the ROV's suction-type sampler. Five cesium particles, with diameters of approximately 400 <math> μ </math>m, were isolated from the samples. The radioactivity of <math> 137 C s </math> was less than 360 Bq, and no nuclides other than <math> 134 C s </math>, <math> 137 C s </math>, and natural radioactive ones were found from gamma-ray spectroscopy. In the particles, titanium and calcium were commonly detected by energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. We also estimated the particles' presence from the change in the total counting rate of the scintillation detector. The average particle density is found to be 3.45<math> × 10 − 2 </math> m<math> − 1 </math> at most. The average increase in the counting rate directly above the cesium-enriched particles in the sediment was less than double. Therefore, the effect of such particles on the distribution of radioactive cesium is limited.

Transport of radioactive materials from terrestrial to marine environments in Fukushima over the past decade

Abstract:While 20 % of radionuclides released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident had been deposited in the terrestrial environment, rivers remain the long-term source for 137 Cs, primarily through particulate transfer, from terrestrial to marine ecosystems. In this study, we estimated the suspended 137 Cs flux to the ocean at 11 sites in the coastal area between October 2012 and December 2020 to be 17 TBq, based on our long-term monitoring data of concentrations of suspended 137 Cs and suspended solids. The cumulative loss of suspended 137 Cs from each site to the ocean ranged from 0.1 % to 1.7 % of initial deposition throughout the observation period, depending on the effect of dam lakes and normalized river discharge. The higher loss is also thought to be the large outflow of runoff during the typhoon. The current level of the suspended 137 Cs concentrations was lowered to 1/10–1/100 of those immediately after the accident. The average value of the decreasing trend for each site was approximated using the equation : y = a 1 e − k 1 t + a 2 e − k 2 t. The rate constant k 1 is higher in areas with intensive land use, such as pastures, bare land, and water surfaces, and k 2 is lower in urban areas.

A modeling study on the oceanic dispersion and sedimentation of radionuclides off the coast of Fukushima

Abstract:We developed a three-dimensional prognostic oceanic dispersion model that accounted for the phase transfer of radionuclides between seawater, suspended particles, and seabed sediments with multiscale grain sizes. A detailed hindcast of 137Cs in the seabed sediment off the Fukushima coast was conducted to investigate the transfer mechanism of dissolved 137Cs derived from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP1) accident toward the seabed sediment. Extensive model-data comparison demonstrated that the model could satisfactorily reproduce the oceanic structure and 137Cs concentrations in the seawater and seabed sediment. The model successfully reproduced the major features of the observed spatial variation of the 137Cs activities in the sediment, which represented more than 90% of the sedimentary radiocesium existing in the coastal area off Fukushima several months after the accident. Shear stress associated with the resuspension of the seabed sediment was induced by waves near the shore and by current velocity offshore of the study area. The adsorption of 137Cs on the seabed sediment differed depending on the particle size, with adsorption on clay being the most substantial. The distribution of 137Cs in the sediment off the Fukushima coast was formed mainly owing to adsorption from the dissolved phase by June 2011, when the impact of the direct oceanic 137Cs release from FNPP1 was remarkable. After June 2011, seabed sediment became a source of 137Cs released to the seawater owing to resuspension with and desorption from the sediment.
Some Critical Comments on Visual Presentation in Word Matching Studies of Phonetic Symbolism

Abstract:The visual method of presentation in word matching studies of phonetic symbolism is judged inadequate because it is based on the tenuous assumption that the sound of a foreign word can be approximated from its spelling and because it permits matchings on the basis of factors other than the sound properties of the words. For these reasons, auditory presentation appears preferable. It is also suggested that foreign items should be repeated by the subject in order for articulatory components of the symbolism to be operative.
Role of mesoscale eddies in transport of Fukushima-derived cesium isotopes in the ocean

Abstract:We present the results of in situ measurements of 134Cs and 137Cs released from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) collected at surface and different depths in the western North Pacific in June and July 2012. It was found that 15 month after the incident concentrations of radiocesium in the Japan and Okhotsk seas were at background or slightly increased level, while they had increased values in the subarctic front area east of Japan. The highest concentrations of 134Cs and 137Cs up to 13.5±0.9 and 22.7±1.5Bqm−3 have been found to exceed ten times the background levels before the accident. Maximal content of radiocesium was observed within subsurface and intermediate water layers inside the cores of anticyclonic eddies (100–500m). Even slightly increased content of radiocesium was found at some eddies at depth of 1000m. It is expected that convergence and subduction of surface water inside eddies are main mechanisms of downward transport of radionuclides. In situ observations are compared with the results of simulated advection of these radioisotopes by the AVISO altimetric velocity field. Different Lagrangian diagnostics are used to reconstruct the history and origin of synthetic tracers imitating measured seawater samples collected in each of those eddies. The results of observations are consistent with the simulated results. It is shown that the tracers, simulating water samples with increased radioactivity to be measured in the cruise, really visited the areas with presumably high level of contamination. Fast water advection between anticyclonic eddies and convergence of surface water inside eddies makes them responsible for spreading, accumulation and downward transport of cesium rich water to the intermediate depth in the frontal zone.

Abstract:Large quantities of radioactive materials were released into the air and the ocean as a result of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, caused by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and the subsequent major tsunami off the Pacific coast. There is much concern about radioactive contamination in both the watershed of the Abukuma River, which flows through Fukushima Prefecture, and its estuary, where it discharges into the sea in Miyagi Prefecture. We investigated radioactive cesium dynamics using mixing diagrams obtained from hydrographic observations of the Abukuma River Estuary. Particulate radioactive cesium dominates the cesium load in the river, whereas the dissolved form dominates in the sea. As the salinity increased from <0.1 to 0.1-2.3, the mixing diagram showed that dissolved radioactive cesium concentrations increased, because of desorption. Desorption from suspended particles explained 36% of dissolved radioactive cesium in estuarine water. However, the dissolved and particulate radioactive cesium concentrations in the sea decreased sharply because of dilution. It is thought that more than 80% of the discharged particulate radioactive cesium was deposited off the river mouth, where the radioactive cesium concentrations in sediment were relatively high (217-2440 Bq kg(-1)). Radioactive cesium that was discharged to the sea was transported southward by currents driven by the density distribution.

Continuous data of 137Cs concentrations in surface seabed sediment at several monitoring points around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) from 2012 to 2022 were compiled, and exponential functions fitted its temporal change. The 137Cs concentrations are gradually declining with time. However, at some monitoring points in shallow regions with a water depth of 30 m or less, long half-lives and/or large deviations of 137Cs concentrations were noticed. Long sediment cores (1 m) were collected at shallow regions near the FDNPP to gain insight into radiocesium dynamics in shallow seafloor, and the vertical profiles of 137Cs concentrations and particle size distribution were determined. In the sediment cores collected in the onshore zone, the 137Cs concentrations and particle size distribution were homogenized from several tens of cm to more than 1 m depth, indicating strong vertical mixing by wind waves. Therefore, onshore sediments have significant 137Cs reserves in deeper layers at present. The 137Cs supply from the deep layers and the land area might suppress this zone's surface 137Cs concentration decline. However, in sediment cores at the offshore zone, the vertical 137Cs concentration distributions were highly heterogeneous, showing the particle size dependency. Moreover, 137Cs profiles obtained at the same point for several years differed significantly, indicating local spatial distribution and temporal deposition. Therefore, it might cause a large fluctuation in 137Cs concentrations at surface sediment over time.
