Abstract:At present, initial alignment of land combat vehicles generally uses stationary alignment. In order to achieve better performance of alignment, vehicle must remain stationary during the alignment process; but during the alignment process, vehicle is inevitably subject to the impact of vibration disturbance by wind gust or engine idling, etc. Therefore, the impact of vibration disturbance on alignment performance must be considered during the actual stationary alignment. Although compared to Kalman filter alignment method (Including the two stages of coarse alignment and fine alignment) based on method modern control theory, alignment time of gyrocompass alignment method (Including the two stages of level alignment and azimuth alignment) based on classical control theory is longer; but its robustness of vibration disturbance is better. This was mainly due to that Kalman filter alignment method is based on the error model of SINS. So vibration disturbance is stronger, the worse is the accuracy of the error model, indirectly aimed at the poorer performance. In order to guarantee the alignment accuracy under the rocking base, and shorten the convergence time of alignment, a gyrocompass alignment method of SINS based on Kalman filtering pretreatment and dynamic gain adjustment is proposed. In this method, the output of Gyros and accelerometers are firstly pre-filtered using Kalman filtering, and then the initial alignment of SINS is done using gyrocompass alignment based dynamic gain adjustment. Among them, the high-frequency low-amplitude rocking interference of vehicle is filtered out through Kalman filter; the low-frequency high-amplitude rocking interference of vehicle is tracked through dynamic gain adjustment of compass alignment based on the alignment time and the degree of attitude change. Through vehicle test analysis of some ring laser SINS, it shows that under the same alignment accuracy, the alignment time of the gyrocompass alignment method proposed by this paper compared to the traditional gyrocompass alignment method based on piecewise variable gain is shorter; under the same alignment time, the alignment accuracy of the gyrocompass alignment method proposed by this paper compared to the Kalman filter alignment method is higher. So, under the conditions of rocking base, the alignment performance of the gyrocompass alignment method proposed by this paper compared to the traditional gyrocompass alignment method based on piecewise variable gain and Kalman filter alignment method is improved.

Abstract:With ultra-high velocity measurement accuracy, laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) is promising to replace the odometer to provide vehicle velocity information in the process of land integrated navigation. This paper investigates the fast in-motion initial alignment for LDV-aided strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS). Aiming at the problem that the installation misalignment angles and scale factor error of LDV will reduce the alignment accuracy and the alignment speed, a Robust Double Gain Square-Root Unscented Quaternion Estimator (RDGSR-USQUE) method with good effect at large misalignment angle is proposed. In RDGSR-USQUE, the influence of unknown parameter error is considered in the construction of process model and measurement model and a double gain structure is proposed to improve the convergence speed based on the usually neglected posterior measurement residual information. RDGSR-USQUE method improves the defects of the traditional Unscented Quaternion Estimator (USQUE) method, such as poor noise resistance, slow convergence speed under large misalignment angle and easy to lead to non-positive definite covariance matrix. This will help to estimate and compensate unknown parameter errors while estimating attitude, so as to improve the accuracy of process model and measurement model, and finally improve the accuracy of attitude estimation. The performance of the proposed scheme is verified by vehicle field test. The results show that the proposed method has higher alignment accuracy, faster convergence speed and stronger robustness than three other compared methods, and the estimated installation misalignment angle and scale factor of LDV are satisfactory in general cases.

Abstract:Along with the development of computer technology and informatization, the unmanned vehicle has become an important equipment in military, civil and some other fields. The navigation system is the basis and core of realizing the autonomous control and completing the task for unmanned vehicles, and the Strapdown Inertial Navigation System (SINS) is the preferred due to its autonomy and independence. The initial alignment technique is the premise and the foundation of the SINS, whose performance is susceptible to system nonlinearity and uncertainty. To improving system performance for SINS, an improved initial alignment algorithm is proposed in this manuscript. In the procedure of this presented initial alignment algorithm, the original signal of inertial sensors is denoised by utilizing the improved signal denoising method based on the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) firstly to suppress the high-frequency noise on coarse alignment. Afterwards, the accuracy and reliability of initial alignment is further enhanced by utilizing an improved Robust Huber Cubarure Kalman Filer (RHCKF) method to minimize the influence of system nonlinearity and uncertainty on the fine alignment. In addition, real tests are used to verify the availability and superiority of this proposed initial alignment algorithm.

Abstract:Strapdown inertial navigation system cannot easily implement initial alignment on moving base if without the prior "one shot" transfer from another master inertial navigation system and strict constraints on moving trajectory, because the initial coarse attitude cannot be effectively achieved. In this paper, a novel method using the GPS measurements to assist to solve initial attitude matrix is investigated as coarse alignment. Specific vectors are constructed with GPS measurements and used for attitude matrix computation like in analytic alignment algorithm. Several moving conditions of carrier are assumed to test the new alignment method, and the results indicate that the initial attitude angles can be achieved with small errors, which is suitable for the conventional fine alignment afterward. Abstract:To improve the alignment accuracy and environmental applicability of the micro-electromechanical system (MEMS)-based strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS), this study proposes a global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-assisted multi-vector determination of the attitude optimal indirect coarse alignment. Using the inertial information output from the inertial measurement unit and the velocity information from the GNSS, a simplified velocity observation vector is constructed and the velocity lever arm stemming from the mounting position inconsistencies of the GNSS and SINS is fed back into the velocity of the carrier system. When constructing the observation vectors, the integration interval is shortened by reconstructing the two-vector integration formula for reducing the cumulative error of the inertial device. The attitude matrix problem is defined as the Wahba problem, which is solved using the singular value decomposition method. Based on the relationship between gyro zero bias and misalignment angle, the corresponding state and measurement equations are designed. Furthermore, owing to the measurement noise uncertainty, the adaptive traceless Kalman filtering algorithm is introduced to realize the effective adaptation processing of the measurement noise. More accurate attitude matrix estimates are obtained by continuously correcting the carrier system transformation matrix. The running car experiment results show that the proposed method exhibits higher alignment accuracy and environmental applicability than the current MEMS strapdown inertial navigation coarse alignment method and the traditional optimization-based alignment method.

Abstract:This paper presents an innovative complete observable initial alignment method for strapdown inertial navigation system. This method negates the need for multi-position rotation or a complex rotating mechanism. First, the coupling relationship between the error state variables is analytically derived. Based on the equivalence relationship between the acceleration output and the angular rate output and error state variables, an improved extended-measurement equation is then established. The feasibility of the scheme that accelerates the convergence speed is theoretically demonstrated, and the observability of the proposed method is qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed in comparisons with established methods (piece-wise constant system, singular value decomposition, and error covariance matrix analysis). The results confirm that the improved measurement model enhances the observability of state variables to different extent and can achieve complete observability of the system. The proposed method not only can provide the fast and accurate estimation of the alignment error, but also can predict the gyro bias online. More specifically, the equivalent horizontal accelerometer output certainly accelerated the convergence of the horizontal alignment error, and introducing the equivalent gyroscope output improved the convergence speed of the heading alignment error. It is a potential candidate for speeding up the convergence of the stationary initial alignment.

Abstract:To obtain a high-accuracy position with SINS(Strapdown Inertial Navigation System), initial alignment needs to determine initial attitude rapidly and accurately. High-accuracy grade IMU(Inertial Measurement Uint) can obtain the initial attitude indenpendently, however, the low-accuracy grade gyroscope doesn't adapt to determine the heading angle, hence the initial attitude matrix will not be obtained. If using large misalignment angle model to estiamting heading angle, the convergence time will become much longer. For solving these two problems, a novel alignment algorithm combined backtracking algorithm and reverse navigation updating method with GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System) aiding is proposed herein. The simulation and land vehicle test were finished to evaluate the alignment accuracy of the proposed algorithm. The horizontal misalignment is less than 2.3 arcmin and the heading misalignment is less than 10.1 arcmin in test. The proposed algorithm is a feasible and practical alignment method for low-cost IMU to obtain initial attitude in short term and large misalignment condition aided by GNSS.

Abstract:In this article, a new position loci-based in-motion initial alignment method is proposed for a low-cost attitude and heading reference system (AHRS). A new sliding-window-based position integration method is proposed to construct the position vector observations, which weakens the accumulated errors induced by the inertial measurement unit (IMU) bias errors in vector observations. Also, a new closed-loop method is proposed to jointly estimate the time-varying body attitude matrix and the unknown IMU biases and global position system (GPS) lever-arm based on the Kalman filter. The estimates of the time-varying body attitude matrix, IMU biases, and GPS lever-arm are all used to construct and compensate for the position vector observations, which improves the alignment accuracy. Both the simulation and car-mounted test results illustrate that the proposed alignment method can achieve better alignment accuracy than these existing methods for a position loci-aided low-cost AHRS.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that the low-cost Strapdown Inertial Navigation System (SINS)Global Positioning System (GPS) cannot effectively achieve fast in-flight alignment with short-endurance, an improved alignment method based on backtracking navigation is proposed. Firstly, the existing backtracking alignment scheme is refined by fully considering the low-cost inertial sensor biases and correcting the correlated errors, which can effectively suppress the sensor biases that cannot be ignored while making full use of the limited observation information. Secondly, a cubature Kalman filter (CKF) based on Lie group is designed to correct the sensor biases. The corresponding errors encountered during the construction of the observation vectors for alignment are directly compensated by filtering, thus avoiding the traditional schema of coarse alignment followed by fine alignment, and simplifying the alignment process. The effectiveness of the proposed in-flight alignment method is demonstrated via ground vehicle tests. The test results show that, compared with the existing advanced alignment methods, the proposed method has higher alignment accuracy, faster alignment speed and better stability, and is applicable to low-cost SINS for short-endurance alignment.

Abstract:In order to get accurate navigation data via Strapdown Inertial Navigation System (SINS), calibration of misalignment angle between Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and vehicle is necessary. The misalignment angle model is simplified, assuming that vehicle travels on a horizontal plane. Due to the velocity of vehicle is small, equation of specific force is simplified. And then equation of misalignment angle is deduced on condition that vehicle travels on a horizontal plane, making straight motion ideally. Angular rate is used to discriminate that vehicle making straight motion. Steps for calibrate misalignment angle are established. In calibration experiment, data are collected and misalignment angle of vehicle-mounted IMU is calibrated using simple techniques of data processing. Analysis shows that, compensation of misalignment angle helps improving the accuracy of SINS. Position error of SINS solution is decreased and the acceleration of vehicle is more accurate.

Abstract:Despite advancements in global navigation satellite system/inertial navigation system (GNSS/INS) integrated systems, the challenge of achieving rapid and accurate initial heading alignment remains, particularly in low-grade IMUs and marine applications with swaying conditions. This study introduces an innovative in-motion heading alignment method utilizing time-differenced carrier phases (TDCP) from a single GNSS antenna and a low-grade IMU based on the fundamental principle of trajectory similarity. The heading angle is determined by comparing the dead reckoning (DR)-derived trajectory with the TDCP-derived trajectory. This is achieved using gyro measurements and the delta position from TDCP solutions. The proposed alignment method can be implemented in real-time and the alignment period is just 1s, which indicates that the method could continuously output heading when the carrier is in motion. We not only validate the effectiveness of the proposed alignment method in land vehicle applications, but also in maritime vessels, like unmanned surface vessels (USV), and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV). In addition, we evaluated the impact of challenging ocean conditions and mounting angle errors on the proposed alignment method. Experimental results show that the heading could be determined with an accuracy of 0.49o, 3.10o, and 2.31o at a 95% confidence level for the land vehicle, USV, and UUV tests, respectively. Besides, the RMS of the alignment errors calculated by our method reaches 0.24o, 1.42o, and 1.19o for the land vehicle, USV, and UUV tests, respectively.

Abstract:The self-alignment of strapdown inertial navigation system that does not depend on any external aid still has huge application requirements. This study presents an anti-swaying self-alignment method based on the inertia tensor of gravity observation vectors and aims to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the latitude and attitude estimation by making full use of inertial measurements. The time-varying attitude matrix is decomposed first to isolate the swaying interference and gravity observation vectors are reconstructed to smooth the measurement noise. Then the body attitude estimation with unknown latitude is defined as an extended Wahba problem, which is solved by eigenvalue decomposition based on the inertia tensor of gravity observation vectors. Simulation and experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed method and two common methods are used for comparison, which show that the proposed method has faster convergence speed, stronger anti-interference ability, and higher accuracy of the latitude and attitude estimation.

Abstract:In this article, an improved in- motion coarse alignment method is proposed for the strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) aided by the global positioning system (GPS). Traditional in- motion alignment methods suffer from complex noises contained in the outputs of inertial sensors and GPS. To solve this problem, this article proposes an in- motion coarse alignment method using the vector observation and truncated vectorized -matrix (VO-TVK) for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The contributions of this study are twofold. Firstly, a new simplified model can be applied to the in- motion alignment process by employing the zero-trace and symmetry of the -matrix. Secondly, the proposed VO-TVK algorithm can make up for the optimal-REQUEST algorithm's drawbacks, where the optimal-REQUEST algorithm has the conservative covariance matrix and the scalar gain. The simulation, vehicle test, and lake trial results illustrate that the proposed VO-TVK algorithm can efficiently reduce the effects of noises contained in the vector observation and achieve better accuracy than the compared algorithms.

Abstract:The problem of poor initial alignment anti-interference ability of the vehicle-mounted single-axis rotating inertial navigation system in complex environments leading to poor navigation accuracy. In this article, we combine the reverse navigation with the improved Sega-Husa filtering algorithm and propose an initial alignment method based on reverse navigation Sega-Husa Kalman filtering (RSKF). First, coarse alignment is performed, and key data are stored at the same time. After coarse alignment, the initial posture of coarse alignment and stored data are used for adaptive filtering alignment based on forward and reverse navigation. This method can fully mine and use the data. The experimental results show that compared with traditional algorithms, the method significantly augments the accuracy of alignment, thereby elevating the navigation precision of the vehicle's single-axis rotational inertial guidance system.

Abstract:<p>Strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS) is an autonomous sensor that can be used for car-mount in-motion coarse alignment. To overcome the shortcoming of high computational burden for the existing in-motion coarse alignment method, we propose a novel fast indirect in-motion coarse alignment method. In the proposed method, the measurement model is constructed by using the output of a global positioning system (GPS) and a SINS, and the rotation vector is used as the attitude parameterization to establish the process model. Moreover, considering that existing linear state estimators cannot always yield a satisfactory performance when the distribution of the measurement noise deviates from the assumed Gaussian distribution and inaccurate noise covariance matrix exists in the filtering model. We propose a novel adaptive Student's t-based Kalman filter (STKF) to overcome these challenges. Car-mounted simulation and experiments show the correctness of the proposed in-motion alignment method and adaptive STKF.</p>

Abstract:In order to improve the computational efficiency and alignment accuracy of a microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-based strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS), this article proposes a high-accuracy global positioning system (GPS)-aided coarse alignment method. The attitude matrix between current and initial body frames and the unknown gyro bias, accelerometer bias, and lever arm are jointly estimated based on the proposed closed-loop approach, where the attitude error and unknown parameters are jointly inferred based on the derived linear state-space model using the Kalman filter. Simulation and experimental results illustrate that the proposed GPS-aided coarse alignment method can achieve better accuracy than existing state-of-the-art coarse alignment methods for MEMS-based SINS.

Abstract:Transfer alignment filter is used to estimate the relative attitude error between a slave strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) and a master INS, the two important targets of which are rapidness and veracity. Transfer alignment filters have typically relied on velocity measurements from the master SINS as the source of alignment information, but lever arm error must be compensated accurately while velocity information is utilized. Nearly all the quaternion based error models are nonlinear, so nonlinear filtering algorithms are needed, suffering from computational complex. A novel improved rapid transfer alignment algorithm formulation is presented, applying quaternion to built the process and measurement model, and the dimension of the state and the measurement vectors are all reduced to four, the improvement employs a special manipulation of the measurement equation resulting in a linear pseudo measurement equation, thus the classical linear Kalman filter is employed to estimate the state, avoiding lever arm error compensation, resulting in the reducing of computational burden. A transfer alignment simulation system is also developed for the evaluation and analysis of the presented algorithm, and results show that the new novel method presented can achieve the transfer alignment accuracy under 1 milliradian. © 2011 IEEE.
Strapdown Inertial Navigation System Initial Alignment Based on Group of Double Direct Spatial Isometries

Abstract:The task of strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) initial alignment is to calculate the attitude transformation matrix from body frame to navigation frame. In this paper, such attitude transformation matrix is divided into two parts through introducing the initial inertially fixed navigation frame as inertial frame. The attitude changes of the navigation frame corresponding to the defined inertial frame can be exactly calculated with known velocity and position provided by GNSS. The attitude from body frame to the defined inertial frame is estimated based on the SINS mechanization in inertial frame. The attitude, velocity and position in inertial frame are formulated together as element of the group of double direct spatial isometries (). It is proven that the group state model in inertial frame satisfies a particular "group affine" property and the corresponding error model satisfies a "log-linear" autonomous differential equation on the Lie algebra. Based on such striking property, the attitude from body frame to the defined inertial frame can be estimated based on the linear error model with even extreme large misalignments. Two different error state vectors are extracted based on right and left matrix multiplications and the detailed linear state-space models are derived based on the right and left errors for SINS mechanization in inertial frame. With the derived linear state-space models, the explicit initial alignment procedures have been presented. Extensive simulation and field tests indicate that the initial alignment based on the left error model can perform quite well within a wide range of initial attitude errors, although the used filter is still a type of linear Kalman filter. This method is promising in practical products abandoning the traditional coarse alignment stage.
