Abstract:With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical image processing, deep learning in color fundus photography (CFP) analysis is also evolving. Although there are some open-source, labeled datasets of CFPs in the ophthalmology community, large-scale datasets for screening only have labels of disease categories, and datasets with annotations of fundus structures are usually small in size. In addition, labeling standards are not uniform across datasets, and there is no clear information on the acquisition device. Here we release a multi-annotation, multi-quality, and multi-device color fundus image dataset for glaucoma analysis on an original challenge -- Retinal Fundus Glaucoma Challenge 2nd Edition (REFUGE2). The REFUGE2 dataset contains 2000 color fundus images with annotations of glaucoma classification, optic disc/cup segmentation, as well as fovea localization. Meanwhile, the REFUGE2 challenge sets three sub-tasks of automatic glaucoma diagnosis and fundus structure analysis and provides an online evaluation framework. Based on the characteristics of multi-device and multi-quality data, some methods with strong generalizations are provided in the challenge to make the predictions more robust. This shows that REFUGE2 brings attention to the characteristics of real-world multi-domain data, bridging the gap between scientific research and clinical application.

Abstract:Color fundus photography and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) are the two most cost-effective tools for glaucoma screening. Both two modalities of images have prominent biomarkers to indicate glaucoma suspected. Clinically, it is often recommended to take both of the screenings for a more accurate and reliable diagnosis. However, although numerous algorithms are proposed based on fundus images or OCT volumes in computer-aided diagnosis, there are still few methods leveraging both of the modalities for the glaucoma assessment. Inspired by the success of Retinal Fundus Glaucoma Challenge (REFUGE) we held previously, we set up the Glaucoma grAding from Multi-Modality imAges (GAMMA) Challenge to encourage the development of fundus \& OCT-based glaucoma grading. The primary task of the challenge is to grade glaucoma from both the 2D fundus images and 3D OCT scanning volumes. As part of GAMMA, we have publicly released a glaucoma annotated dataset with both 2D fundus color photography and 3D OCT volumes, which is the first multi-modality dataset for glaucoma grading. In addition, an evaluation framework is also established to evaluate the performance of the submitted methods. During the challenge, 1272 results were submitted, and finally, top-10 teams were selected to the final stage. We analysis their results and summarize their methods in the paper. Since all these teams submitted their source code in the challenge, a detailed ablation study is also conducted to verify the effectiveness of the particular modules proposed. We find many of the proposed techniques are practical for the clinical diagnosis of glaucoma. As the first in-depth study of fundus \& OCT multi-modality glaucoma grading, we believe the GAMMA Challenge will be an essential starting point for future research.

Abstract:Glaucoma is a chronic neuro-degenerative condition that is one of the world's leading causes of irreversible but preventable blindness. The blindness is generally caused by the lack of timely detection and treatment. Early screening is thus essential for early treatment to preserve vision and maintain life quality. Color fundus photography and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) are the two most cost-effective tools for glaucoma screening. Both imaging modalities have prominent biomarkers to indicate glaucoma suspects, such as the vertical cup-to-disc ratio (vCDR) on fundus images and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness on OCT volume. Abstract:Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is the most common cause of avoidable vision loss, predominantly affecting the working-age population across the globe. Screening for DR, coupled with timely consultation and treatment, is a globally trusted policy to avoid vision loss. However, implementation of DR screening programs is challenging due to the scarcity of medical professionals able to screen a growing global diabetic population at risk for DR. Computer-aided disease diagnosis in retinal image analysis could provide a sustainable approach for such large-scale screening effort. The recent scientific advances in computing capacity and machine learning approaches provide an avenue for biomedical scientists to reach this goal. Aiming to advance the state-of-the-art in automatic DR diagnosis, a grand challenge on "Diabetic Retinopathy - Segmentation and Grading" was organized in conjunction with the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI - 2018). In this paper, we report the set-up and results of this challenge that is primarily based on Indian Diabetic Retinopathy Image Dataset (IDRiD). There were three principal sub-challenges: lesion segmentation, disease severity grading, and localization of retinal landmarks and segmentation. These multiple tasks in this challenge allow to test the generalizability of algorithms, and this is what makes it different from existing ones. It received a positive response from the scientific community with 148 submissions from 495 registrations effectively entered in this challenge. This paper outlines the challenge, its organization, the dataset used, evaluation methods and results of top-performing participating solutions. The top-performing approaches utilized a blend of clinical information, data augmentation, and an ensemble of models. These findings have the potential to enable new developments in retinal image analysis and image-based DR screening in particular.

Abstract:Background and Objective. Glaucomatous vision loss may be preceded by an enlargement of the cup-to-disc ratio (CDR). We propose to develop and validate an artificial-intelligence-based CDR grading system that may aid in effective glaucoma-suspect screening. Design, Setting, and Participants. 1546 disc-centered fundus images were selected, including all 457 images from the Retinal Image Database for Optic Nerve Evaluation dataset, and images were randomly selected from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study and Singapore Malay Eye Study to develop the system. First, a proprietary semiautomated software was used by an expert grader to quantify vertical CDR. Then, using CDR below 0.5 (nonsuspect) and CDR above 0.5 (glaucoma suspect), deep-learning architectures were used to train and test a binary classifier system. Measurements. The binary classifier, with glaucoma suspect as positive, is measured using sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and AUC. Results. The system achieved an accuracy of 89.67% (sensitivity, 83.33%; specificity, 93.89%; and AUC, 0.93). For external validation, the Retinal Fundus Image Database for Glaucoma Analysis dataset, which has 638 gradable quality images, was used. Here, the model achieved an accuracy of 83.54% (sensitivity, 80.11%; specificity, 84.96%; and AUC, 0.85). Conclusions. Having demonstrated an accurate and fully automated glaucoma-suspect screening system that can be deployed on telemedicine platforms, we plan prospective trials to determine the feasibility of the system in primary-care settings.

Abstract:Glaucoma is a major global cause of blindness. As the symptoms of glaucoma appear, when the disease reaches an advanced stage, proper screening of glaucoma in the early stages is challenging. Therefore, regular glaucoma screening is essential and recommended. However, eye screening is currently subjective, time-consuming and labor-intensive and there are insufficient eye specialists available. We present an automatic two-stage glaucoma screening system to reduce the workload of ophthalmologists. The system first segmented the optic disc region using a DeepLabv3+ architecture but substituted the encoder module with multiple deep convolutional neural networks. For the classification stage, we used pretrained deep convolutional neural networks for three proposals (1) transfer learning and (2) learning the feature descriptors using support vector machine and (3) building ensemble of methods in (1) and (2). We evaluated our methods on five available datasets containing 2787 retinal images and found that the best option for optic disc segmentation is a combination of DeepLabv3+ and MobileNet. For glaucoma classification, an ensemble of methods performed better than the conventional methods for RIM-ONE, ORIGA, DRISHTI-GS1 and ACRIMA datasets with the accuracy of 97.37%, 90.00%, 86.84% and 99.53% and Area Under Curve (AUC) of 100%, 92.06%, 91.67% and 99.98%, respectively, and performed comparably with CUHKMED, the top team in REFUGE challenge, using REFUGE dataset with an accuracy of 95.59% and AUC of 95.10%.

Abstract:The early detection of glaucoma is essential in preventing visual impairment. Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to analyze color fundus photographs (CFPs) in a cost-effective manner, making glaucoma screening more accessible. While AI models for glaucoma screening from CFPs have shown promising results in laboratory settings, their performance decreases significantly in real-world scenarios due to the presence of out-of-distribution and low-quality images. To address this issue, we propose the Artificial Intelligence for Robust Glaucoma Screening (AIROGS) challenge. This challenge includes a large dataset of around 113,000 images from about 60,000 patients and 500 different screening centers, and encourages the development of algorithms that are robust to ungradable and unexpected input data. We evaluated solutions from 14 teams in this paper, and found that the best teams performed similarly to a set of 20 expert ophthalmologists and optometrists. The highest-scoring team achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.99 (95% CI: 0.98-0.99) for detecting ungradable images on-the-fly. Additionally, many of the algorithms showed robust performance when tested on three other publicly available datasets. These results demonstrate the feasibility of robust AI-enabled glaucoma screening.

Abstract:Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable, irreversible blindness world-wide. The disease can remain asymptomatic until severe, and an estimated 50%-90% of people with glaucoma remain undiagnosed. Glaucoma screening is recommended for early detection and treatment. A cost-effective tool to detect glaucoma could expand screening access to a much larger patient population, but such a tool is currently unavailable. We trained a deep learning algorithm using a retrospective dataset of 86,618 images, assessed for glaucomatous optic nerve head features and referable glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON). The algorithm was validated using 3 datasets. For referable GON, the algorithm had an AUC of 0.945 (95% CI, 0.929-0.960) in dataset A (1205 images, 1 image/patient; 18.1% referable), images adjudicated by panels of Glaucoma Specialists (GSs); 0.855 (95% CI, 0.841-0.870) in dataset B (9642 images, 1 image/patient; 9.2% referable), images from Atlanta Veterans Affairs Eye Clinic diabetic teleretinal screening program; and 0.881 (95% CI, 0.838-0.918) in dataset C (346 images, 1 image/patient; 81.7% referable), images from Dr. Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital's glaucoma clinic. The algorithm showed significantly higher sensitivity than 7 of 10 graders not involved in determining the reference standard, including 2 of 3 GSs, and showed higher specificity than 3 graders, while remaining comparable to others. For both GSs and the algorithm, the most crucial features related to referable GON were: presence of vertical cup-to-disc ratio of 0.7 or more, neuroretinal rim notching, retinal nerve fiber layer defect, and bared circumlinear vessels. An algorithm trained on fundus images alone can detect referable GON with higher sensitivity than and comparable specificity to eye care providers. The algorithm maintained good performance on an independent dataset with diagnoses based on a full glaucoma workup.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we present a robust method for glaucoma screening from fundus images using an ensemble of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The pipeline comprises of first segmenting the optic disk and optic cup from the fundus image, then extracting a patch centered around the optic disk and subsequently feeding to the classification network to differentiate the image as diseased or healthy. In the segmentation network, apart from the image, we make use of spatial co-ordinate (X \& Y) space so as to learn the structure of interest better. The classification network is composed of a DenseNet201 and a ResNet18 which were pre-trained on a large cohort of natural images. On the REFUGE validation data (n=400), the segmentation network achieved a dice score of 0.88 and 0.64 for optic disc and optic cup respectively. For the tasking differentiating images affected with glaucoma from healthy images, the area under the ROC curve was observed to be 0.85.

Abstract:Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Often asymptomatic for years, this disease can progress significantly before patients become aware of the loss of visual function. Critical examination of the optic nerve through ophthalmoscopy or using fundus images is a crucial component of glaucoma detection before the onset of vision loss. The vertical cup-to-disc ratio (VCDR) is a key structural indicator for glaucoma, as thinning of the superior and inferior neuroretinal rim is a hallmark of the disease. However, manual assessment of fundus images is both time-consuming and subject to variability based on clinician expertise and interpretation. In this study, we develop a robust and accurate automated system employing deep learning (DL) techniques, specifically the YOLOv7 architecture, for the detection of optic disc and optic cup in fundus images and the subsequent calculation of VCDR. We also address the often-overlooked issue of adapting a DL model, initially trained on a specific population (e.g., European), for VCDR estimation in a different population. Our model was initially trained on ten publicly available datasets and subsequently fine-tuned on the REFUGE dataset, which comprises images collected from Chinese patients. The DL-derived VCDR displayed exceptional accuracy, achieving a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.91 ( P = 4.12 × 10 –412 ) and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.0347 when compared to assessments by human experts. Our models also surpassed existing approaches on the REFUGE dataset, demonstrating higher Dice similarity coefficients and lower MAEs. Moreover, we developed an optimization approach capable of calibrating DL results for new populations. Our novel approaches for detecting optic discs and optic cups and calculating VCDR, offers clinicians a promising tool that significantly reduces manual workload in image assessment while improving both speed and accuracy. Most importantly, this automated method effectively differentiates between glaucoma and non-glaucoma cases, making it a valuable asset for glaucoma detection.

Assessing Coarse-to-Fine Deep Learning Models for Optic Disc and Cup Segmentation in Fundus Images

Abstract:Automated optic disc (OD) and optic cup (OC) segmentation in fundus images is relevant to efficiently measure the vertical cup-to-disc ratio (vCDR), a biomarker commonly used in ophthalmology to determine the degree of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. In general this is solved using coarse-to-fine deep learning algorithms in which a first stage approximates the OD and a second one uses a crop of this area to predict OD/OC masks. While this approach is widely applied in the literature, there are no studies analyzing its real contribution to the results. In this paper we present a comprehensive analysis of different coarse-to-fine designs for OD/OC segmentation using 5 public databases, both from a standard segmentation perspective and for estimating the vCDR for glaucoma assessment. Our analysis shows that these algorithms not necessarily outperfom standard multi-class single-stage models, especially when these are learned from sufficiently large and diverse training sets. Furthermore, we noticed that the coarse stage achieves better OD segmentation results than the fine one, and that providing OD supervision to the second stage is essential to ensure accurate OC masks. Moreover, both the single-stage and two-stage models trained on a multi-dataset setting showed results in pair or even better than other state-of-the-art alternatives, while ranking first in REFUGE for OD/OC segmentation. Finally, we evaluated the models for vCDR prediction in comparison with six ophthalmologists on a subset of AIROGS images, to understand them in the context of inter-observer variability. We noticed that vCDR estimates recovered both from single-stage and coarse-to-fine models can obtain good glaucoma detection results even when they are not highly correlated with manual measurements from experts.

Abstract:Glaucoma is a serious ocular disorder for which the screening and diagnosis are carried out by the examination of the optic nerve head (ONH). The color fundus image (CFI) is the most common modality used for ocular screening. In CFI, the central region which is the optic disc and the optic cup region within the disc are examined to determine one of the important cues for glaucoma diagnosis called the optic cup-to-disc ratio (CDR). CDR calculation requires accurate segmentation of optic disc and cup. Another important cue for glaucoma progression is the variation of depth in ONH region. In this paper, we first propose a deep learning framework to estimate depth from a single fundus image. For the case of monocular retinal depth estimation, we are also plagued by the labeled data insufficiency. To overcome this problem we adopt the technique of pretraining the deep network where, instead of using a denoising autoencoder, we propose a new pretraining scheme called pseudo-depth reconstruction, which serves as a proxy task for retinal depth estimation. Empirically, we show pseudo-depth reconstruction to be a better proxy task than denoising. Our results outperform the existing techniques for depth estimation on the INSPIRE dataset. To extend the use of depth map for optic disc and cup segmentation, we propose a novel fully convolutional guided network, where, along with the color fundus image the network uses the depth map as a guide. We propose a convolutional block called multimodal feature extraction block to extract and fuse the features of the color image and the guide image. We extensively evaluate the proposed segmentation scheme on three datasets- ORIGA, RIMONEr3, and DRISHTI-GS. The performance of the method is comparable and in many cases, outperforms the most recent state of the art.

Multi-step framework for glaucoma diagnosis in retinal fundus images using deep learning

Abstract:Glaucoma is one of the most common causes of blindness in the world. Screening glaucoma from retinal fundus images based on deep learning is a common method at present. In the diagnosis of glaucoma based on deep learning, the blood vessels within the optic disc interfere with the diagnosis, and there is also some pathological information outside the optic disc in fundus images. Therefore, integrating the original fundus image with the vessel-removed optic disc image can improve diagnostic efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-step framework named MSGC-CNN that can better diagnose glaucoma. In the framework, (1) we combine glaucoma pathological knowledge with deep learning model, fuse the features of original fundus image and optic disc region in which the interference of blood vessel is specifically removed by U-Net, and make glaucoma diagnosis based on the fused features. (2) Aiming at the characteristics of glaucoma fundus images, such as small amount of data, high resolution, and rich feature information, we design a new feature extraction network RA-ResNet and combined it with transfer learning. In order to verify our method, we conduct binary classification experiments on three public datasets, Drishti-GS, RIM-ONE-R3, and ACRIMA, with accuracy of 92.01%, 93.75%, and 97.87%. The results demonstrate a significant improvement over earlier results.

Abstract:This paper offers a comprehensive review of recent advancements in optic disc and optic cup segmentation techniques crucial for glaucoma screening. It presents insights into commonly used datasets, evaluation metrics, and a comparative analysis of traditional and deep learning methods. Readers will gain a thorough understanding of the current strengths and challenges in optic disc and optic cup segmentation, enabling them to identify research gaps and guide future investigations in this field. Optic disc (OD) and optic cup (OC) segmentation is an important task in ophthalmic medicine and is crucial for aiding glaucoma screening. With the development of smart healthcare and the increase of large datasets, there is an increasing number of research efforts targeting OD and OC segmentation, making it particularly important to provide a systematic review of the latest advances in the field. This paper presents a systematic review of commonly used datasets, evaluation metrics, and related research results in the field of OD and OC segmentation. The advantages and disadvantages of segmentation techniques based on traditional and deep learning methods are comparatively analysed. In addition, this study emphasizes the importance of OD and OC segmentation efforts in smart healthcare. Despite the technological advances, the lack of generalization capability is still a major obstacle limiting its clinical application. To address this issue, this study explores unsupervised domain adaptation methods to enhance the generalization performance of segmentation techniques and provide new strategies for clinical diagnosis. Finally, this paper discusses the challenges and future research directions faced by OD and OC segmentation when applied in the medical field to help readers comprehensively grasp the research dynamics in this area.

Automated glaucoma screening method based on image segmentation and feature extraction

Abstract:Glaucoma is a chronic disease that threatens eye health and can cause permanent blindness. Since there is no cure for glaucoma, early screening and detection are crucial for the prevention of glaucoma. Therefore, a novel method for automatic glaucoma screening that combines clinical measurement features with image-based features is proposed in this paper. To accurately extract clinical measurement features, an improved UNet++ neural network is proposed to segment the optic disc and optic cup based on region of interest (ROI) simultaneously. Some important clinical measurement features, such as optic cup to disc ratio, are extracted from the segmentation results. Then, the increasing field of view (IFOV) feature model is proposed to fully extract texture features, statistical features, and other hidden image-based features. Next, we select the best feature combination from all the features and use the adaptive synthetic sampling approach to alleviate the uneven distribution of training data. Finally, a gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) classifier for glaucoma screening is trained. Experimental results based on the ORIGA dataset show that the proposed algorithm achieves excellent glaucoma screening performance with sensitivity of 0.894, accuracy of 0.843, and AUC of 0.901, which is superior to other existing methods.

Abstract:Glaucoma is a progressive eye condition that causes irreversible vision loss due to damage to the optic nerve. Recent developments in deep learning and the accessibility of computing resources have provided tool support for automated glaucoma diagnosis. Despite deep learning's advances in disease diagnosis using medical images, generic convolutional neural networks are still not widely used in medical practices due to the limited trustworthiness of these models. Although deep learning-based glaucoma classification has gained popularity in recent years, only a few of them have addressed the explainability and interpretability of the models, which increases confidence in using such applications. This study presents state-of-the-art deep learning techniques to segment and classify fundus images to predict glaucoma conditions and applies visualization techniques to explain the results to ease understandability. Our predictions are based on U-Net with attention mechanisms with ResNet50 for the segmentation process and a modified Inception V3 architecture for the classification. Attention U-Net with modified ResNet50 backbone obtained 99.58% and 98.05% accuracies for optic disc segmentation and optic cup segmentation, respectively for the RIM-ONE dataset. Additionally, we generate heatmaps that highlight the regions that impacted the glaucoma diagnosis using both Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) and Grad-CAM++. Our model that classifies the segmented images achieves accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity values of 98.97%, 99.42%, and 95.59%, respectively, with the RIM-ONE dataset. This model can be used as a support tool for automated glaucoma identification using fundus images.

Abstract:Angle closure glaucoma (ACG) is a more aggressive disease than open-angle glaucoma, where the abnormal anatomical structures of the anterior chamber angle (ACA) may cause an elevated intraocular pressure and gradually lead to glaucomatous optic neuropathy and eventually to visual impairment and blindness. Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OCT) imaging provides a fast and contactless way to discriminate angle closure from open angle. Although many medical image analysis algorithms have been developed for glaucoma diagnosis, only a few studies have focused on AS-OCT imaging. In particular, there is no public AS-OCT dataset available for evaluating the existing methods in a uniform way, which limits progress in the development of automated techniques for angle closure detection and assessment. To address this, we organized the Angle closure Glaucoma Evaluation challenge (AGE), held in conjunction with MICCAI 2019. The AGE challenge consisted of two tasks: scleral spur localization and angle closure classification. For this challenge, we released a large dataset of 4800 annotated AS-OCT images from 199 patients, and also proposed an evaluation framework to benchmark and compare different models. During the AGE challenge, over 200 teams registered online, and more than 1100 results were submitted for online evaluation. Finally, eight teams participated in the onsite challenge. In this paper, we summarize these eight onsite challenge methods and analyze their corresponding results for the two tasks. We further discuss limitations and future directions. In the AGE challenge, the top-performing approach had an average Euclidean Distance of 10 pixels (10 µm) in scleral spur localization, while in the task of angle closure classification, all the algorithms achieved satisfactory performances, with two best obtaining an accuracy rate of 100%. These artificial intelligence techniques have the potential to promote new developments in AS-OCT image analysis and image-based angle closure glaucoma assessment in particular.

Superpixel Classification Based Optic Disc and Optic Cup Segmentation for Glaucoma Screening

Abstract:Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease that leads to vision loss. As it cannot be cured, detecting the disease in time is important. Current tests using intraocular pressure (IOP) are not sensitive enough for population based glaucoma screening. Optic nerve head assessment in retinal fundus images is both more promising and superior. This paper proposes optic disc and optic cup segmentation using superpixel classification for glaucoma screening. In optic disc segmentation, histograms, and center surround statistics are used to classify each superpixel as disc or non-disc. A self-assessment reliability score is computed to evaluate the quality of the automated optic disc segmentation. For optic cup segmentation, in addition to the histograms and center surround statistics, the location information is also included into the feature space to boost the performance. The proposed segmentation methods have been evaluated in a database of 650 images with optic disc and optic cup boundaries manually marked by trained professionals. Experimental results show an average overlapping error of 9.5% and 24.1% in optic disc and optic cup segmentation, respectively. The results also show an increase in overlapping error as the reliability score is reduced, which justifies the effectiveness of the self-assessment. The segmented optic disc and optic cup are then used to compute the cup to disc ratio for glaucoma screening. Our proposed method achieves areas under curve of 0.800 and 0.822 in two data sets, which is higher than other methods. The methods can be used for segmentation and glaucoma screening. The self-assessment will be used as an indicator of cases with large errors and enhance the clinical deployment of the automatic segmentation and screening.

Abstract:: The objective of the paper is to provide a general view for automatic cup to disc ratio (CDR) assessment in fundus images. As for the cause of blindness, glaucoma ranks as the second in ocular diseases. Vision loss caused by glaucoma cannot be reversed, but the loss may be avoided if screened in the early stage of glaucoma. Thus, early screening of glaucoma is very requisite to preserve vision and maintain quality of life. Optic nerve head (ONH) assessment is a useful and practical technique among current glaucoma screening methods. Vertical CDR as one of the clinical indicators for ONH assessment, has been well-used by clinicians and professionals for the analysis and diagnosis of glaucoma. The key for automatic calculation of vertical CDR in fundus images is the segmentation of optic cup (OC) and optic disc (OD). We take a brief description of methodologies about the OC and disc optic segmentation and comprehensively presented these methods as two aspects: hand-craft feature and deep learning feature. Sliding window regression, super-pixel level, image reconstruction, super-pixel level low-rank representation (LRR), deep learning methodologies for segmentation of OD and OC have been shown. It is hoped that this paper can provide guidance and bring inspiration to other researchers. Every mentioned method has its advantages and limitations. Appropriate method should be selected or explored according to the actual situation. For automatic glaucoma screening, CDR is just the reflection for a small part of the disc, while utilizing comprehensive factors or multimodal images is the promising future direction to furthermore enhance the performance.

Abstract:Segmentation of the optic disc (OD) and optic cup (OC) from a retinal fundus image plays an important role for glaucoma screening and diagnosis. However, most existing methods only focus on pixel-level representations, and ignore the high level representations. In this work, we consider the high level concept, i.e., objectness constraint, for fundus structure analysis. Specifically, we introduce a deep object detection network to localize OD and OC simultaneously. The end-to-end architecture guarantees to learn more discriminative representations. Moreover, data from a similar domain can further contributes to our algorithm through transfer learning techniques. Experimental results show that our method achieves state-of-the-art OD and OC segmentation/localization results on ORIGA dataset. Moreover, the proposed method also obtains satisfactory glaucoma screening performance with the calculated vertical cup-to-disc ratio (CDR).
