Abstract:IntroductionBlack tea, a beverage consumed worldwide, possesses favorable effects on gastrointestinal tract, including nourishing stomach and promoting digestion. Nevertheless, its specific effects on intestinal homeostasis remains inconclusive.MethodsWe applied black tea to mice prior to inducing colitis with DSS and then monitored their body weight and disease activity index (DAI) daily. When sacrificed, we measured intestinal permeability and conducted analyses of mucin and tight junction proteins. We detected inflammatory cytokines, immune cells, and related inflammatory signaling pathways. In addition, the gut microbiota was analyzed through 16S rRNA sequencing, and the concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were also measured.ResultsThe results showed that black tea-treated group significantly rescued the DSS-disrupted intestinal structure. It reduced the relative abundance of the pathogenic bacterium Turicibacter, while increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria norank_f_Muribaculaceae and restored the contents of SCFAs such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate. It also protected the intestinal barrier by reducing the levels of immune response-related factors (e.g., TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β) and increasing the expression of tight junction proteins (TJs) (e.g., ZO-1, occludin). Furthermore, black tea exhibited the capacity to suppress the expression of MMP-9 and ICAM-1, as well as to inhibit the activation of NF-κB signaling pathway.DiscussionOur findings provide a theoretical framework that elucidates the mechanisms by which black tea preserves intestinal homeostasis, highlighting its potential as a preventive strategy against intestinal disruptions. This study contributes to the understanding of the dietary effects of black tea on gastrointestinal health.

Abstract:Tea is a highly popular beverage, primarily due to its unique flavor and aroma as well as its perceived health benefits. The impact of tea on the gut microbiome could be an important means by which tea exerts its health benefits since the link between the gut microbiome and health is strong. This review provided a discussion of the bioactive compounds in tea and the human gut microbiome and how the gut microbiome interacts with tea polyphenols. Importantly, studies were compiled on the impact of differently processed tea, which contains different polyphenol profiles, on the gut microbiota from in vivo animal feeding trials, in vitro human fecal fermentation experiments, and in vivo human feeding trials from 2004–2024. The results were discussed in terms of different tea types and how their impacts are related to or different from each other in these three study groups.

Abstract:Tea, made from the leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis, is a popular beverage and the possible beneficial health effects of tea polyphenols (TPP) have been studied extensively. This article discusses the biological fates of TPP and their interactions with the microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract. TPP are absorbed mainly in the small intestine and undergo metabolism in different organs. The unabsorbed TPP entering the colon are degraded by microbiota. Some of the metabolites are also absorbed systemically and excreted in the urine, while those unabsorbed are excreted in the feces. TPP can in turn modify the composition of gut microbiota. In the human and rodent studies reviewed herein, many studies reported a correlation between the observed microbiota changes with lowering blood glucose level or body weight gain. Bacteria species belonging to different genera were identified; however, the effects of TPP at the phyla level were inconsistent among studies. Our recent study identified a few co-abundance groups that were correlated with the blood glucose lowering effect of green tea polyphenols. The "guilds" approach that we used could lead to a more systematic analysis of microbiota changes. The mechanisms by which TPP modulate gut microbiota directly, or through influence on nutrient environment, are discussed. Finally, there are discussions on how the interactions of TPP with microbiota may impact metabolic diseases as well as on some future studies that are needed.

Abstract:Multiple beneficial effects have been attributed to green tea catechins (GTCs). However, the bioavailability of GTCs is generally low, with only a small portion directly absorbed in the small intestine. The majority of ingested GTCs reaches the large intestinal lumen, and are extensively degraded via biotransformation by gut microbiota, forming many low-molecular-weight metabolites such as phenyl-γ-valerolactones, phenolic acids, butyrate, and acetate. This process not only improves the overall bioavailability of GTC-derived metabolites but also enriches the biological activities of GTCs. Therefore, the intra- and inter-individual differences in human gut microbiota as well as the resulting biological contribution of microbial metabolites are crucial for the ultimate health benefits. In this review, the microbial degradation of major GTCs was characterized and an overview of the in vitro models used for GTC metabolism was summarized. The intra- and inter-individual differences of human gut microbiota composition and the resulting divergence in the metabolic patterns of GTCs were highlighted. Moreover, the potential beneficial effects of GTCs and their gut microbial metabolites were also discussed. Overall, the microbial metabolites of GTCs with higher bioavailability and bioactive potency are key factors for the observed beneficial effects of GTCs and green tea consumption.

Abstract:Tea polyphenols have been extensively studied for their preventive properties against cardiometabolic diseases. Nevertheless, the evidence of these effects from human intervention studies is not always consistent, mainly because of a large interindividual variability. The bioavailability of tea polyphenols is low, and metabolism of tea polyphenols highly depends on individual gut microbiota. The accompanying reciprocal relationship between tea polyphenols and gut microbiota may result in alterations in the cardiometabolic effects, however, the underlying mechanism of which is little explored. This review summarizes tea polyphenols-microbiota interaction and its contribution to interindividual variability in cardiometabolic effects. Currently, only a few bacteria that can biodegrade tea polyphenols have been identified and generated metabolites and their bioactivities in metabolic pathways are not fully elucidated. A deeper understanding of the role of complex interaction necessitates fully individualized data, the ntegration of multiple-omics platforms and development of polyphenol-centered databases. Knowledge of this microbial contribution will enable the functional stratification of individuals in the gut microbiota profile (metabotypes) to clarify interindividual variability in the health effects of tea polyphenols. This could be used to predict individual responses to tea polyphenols consumption, hence bringing us closer to personalized nutrition with optimal dose and additional supplementation of specific microorganisms.

Abstract:Green tea can influence the gut microbiota by either stimulating the growth of specific species or by hindering the development of detrimental ones. At the same time, gut bacteria can metabolize green tea compounds and produce smaller bioactive molecules. Accordingly, green tea benefits could be due to beneficial bacteria or to microbial bioactive metabolites. Therefore, the gut microbiota is likely to act as middle man for, at least, some of the green tea benefits on health. Many health promoting effects of green tea seems to be related to the inter-relation between green tea and gut microbiota. Green tea has proven to be able to correct the microbial dysbiosis that appears during several conditions such as obesity or cancer. On the other hand, tea compounds influence the growth of bacterial species involved in inflammatory processes such as the release of LPS or the modulation of IL production; thus, influencing the development of different chronic diseases. There are many studies trying to link either green tea or green tea phenolic compounds to health benefits via gut microbiota. In this review, we tried to summarize the most recent research in the area.

Abstract:The initiation of chemical reaction–diffusion waves by visible light of wavelength λ=633 nm from a 20 mW He–Ne laser in the ferroin-catalysed BZ reaction on a polysulfone membrane is repor ted. With low loading of the catalyst on the membrane, oxidation waves can be initiated from the resting steady state and in the recovering tail of a wave. With high loading, waves can only be initiated in the ‘vulnerable’ region behind an existing wavefront. The mechanism of this initiation is discussed in terms of the photoreduction of the metal–ligand catalyst and expressed in terms of a modified Oregonator model. These new observations are in contrast to the inhibitory effect of visible light in the light-sensitive Ru-catalysed BZ system.

Abstract:Polyphenols, a ubiquitous group of secondary plant metabolites sharing at least one aromatic ring structure with one or more hydroxyl groups, represent a large group of natural antioxidants abundant in fruits, vegetables, and beverages, such as grape juice, wine, and tea, and are widely considered to contribute to health benefits in humans. However, little is yet known concerning their bioactive forms in vivo and the mechanisms by which they may alter our metabolome, which ultimately contribute toward disease prevention. Here we report a study to determine the metabolic fate of polyphenolic components in a Chinese tea (Pu-erh) in human subjects using a metabonomic profiling approach coupled with multivariate and univariate statistical analysis. Urine samples were collected at 0 h, 1 h, 3 h, 6 h, 9 h, 12 h, and 24 h within the first 24 h and once a day during a 6 week period including a 2 week baseline phase, a 2 week daily Pu-erh tea ingestion phase, and a 2 week "wash-out" phase, and they were analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. The dynamic concentration profile of bioavailable plant molecules (due to in vivo absorption and the hepatic and gut bacterial metabolism) and the human metabolic response profile were measured and correlated with each other. This study demonstrates that the metabonomic strategy will enable us to integrate the overwhelming amount of metabolic end points as a systems' response to the absorption, metabolism, and disposition of a multicomponent botanical intervention system, leading to a direct elucidation of their mechanisms of action.
Tea Consumption and Gut Microbiome in Chinese Men and Women

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the associations of tea drinking habits with gut microbiome diversity and composition among senior Chinese adults. Methods: Included in the study were 1179 men and 1078 women from the Shanghai Men’s Health Study and Shanghai Women’s Health Study who were free of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes at stool collection (2015–2018) and had no diarrhea or antibiotic use in the last 7 days before stool collection. The gut microbiome was profiled by 16S rRNA sequencing. Tea drinking habits were assessed at the cohorts’ baseline and follow-up surveys (1996–2011), including status (current or not), type (green tea or others), amount (tertile cutoffs: 2 and 3.3 cups/day in men; 1.3 and 2 cups/day in women), and duration (tertile cutoffs: 30.8 and 41.0 years in men; 15.1 and 32.8 years in women). The associations of tea variables with microbiome diversity and taxa abundance were evaluated by linear or negative binomial hurdle models after appropriate data transformation and adjusting for age, education, income, tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, physical activity, body mass index, diet quality score, and hypertension status. False discovery rate < 0.1 at each taxonomic level was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean ± SD age at stool collection was 67.2 ± 9.0 years in men and 69.6 ± 8.5 years in women. None of the tea drinking variables showed significant association with microbiome ɑ-diversity in men or women; however, tea drinking status, type, amount, and duration were all significantly associated with β-diversity (Bray–Curtis distance) in men (P < 0.001). Significant associations with taxa abundance were also observed only in men. Current tea drinking, particularly green tea drinking, was associated with increased abundance of order Synergistales and class Mollicutes and its order RF39 (P FDR < 0.10). In addition, increased abundance of families Coriobacteriaceae, Odoribacteraceae and genera Collinsella, Odoribacter were observed among men who drank >3.3 cups per day (high amount vs. non-drinkers). Conclusions: Tea drinking may affect gut microbiome β-diversity and abundance of some bacteria in Chinese men. Future studies are needed to examine the potential sex-specific effect of tea drinking on gut microbiome and the role of these bacteria in mediating the health benefits of tea. Abstract:Tea, derived from the young leaves and buds of the Camellia sinensis plant, is a popular beverage that may influence the host microbiota. Its consumption has been shown to promote the growth of beneficial bacterial species while suppressing harmful ones. Simultaneously, host bacteria metabolize tea compounds, resulting in the production of bioactive molecules. Consequently, the health benefits associated with tea may stem from both the favorable bacteria it nurtures and the metabolites produced by these microbes. The gut microbiota plays a vital role in mediating the systemic immune homeostasis linked to tea consumption, functioning through complex pathways that involve the gut–lung, gut–brain, and gut–liver axes. Recent studies have sought to establish connections between tea, its bioactive compounds, and immune regulation via the gut microbiota. In this paper, we aim to summarize the latest research findings in this field.

Microbial-Transferred Metabolites and Improvement of Biological Activities of Green Tea Catechins by Human Gut Microbiota

Abstract:Green tea catechins (GTCs) are dietary polyphenols with broad bioactivities that undergo extensive microbial metabolism in the human gut. However, microbial-transferred metabolites and their health benefits are not fully understood. Herein, the microbial metabolism of GTCs by human fecal microbiota and dynamic alteration of the microbiota were integrally investigated via in vitro anaerobic fermentation. The results showed that the human gut microbiota exhibited a strong metabolic effect on GTCs via UHPLC-MS/MS analysis. A total of 35 microbial-transferred metabolites were identified, far more than were identified in previous studies. Among them, five metabolites, namely EGCG quinone, EGC quinone, ECG quinone, EC quinone, and mono-oxygenated EGCG, were identified for the first time in fermented GTCs with the human gut microbiota. Consequently, corresponding metabolic pathways were proposed. Notably, the antioxidant, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of the GTCs sample increased after fermentation compared to those of the initial unfermented sample. The results of the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the GTCs significantly altered gut microbial diversity and enriched the abundancy of Eubacterium, Flavonifractor, etc., which may be further involved in the metabolisms of GTCs. Thus, these findings contribute to a better understanding of the interactions between GTCs and gut microbiota, as well as the health benefits of green tea consumption.

Abstract:Although among the five main types of teas (white, green, oolong, black and pu-erh), black tea is the most consumed worldwide, an impressive number of scientific publications have been focused on green tea and its major compounds, flavan-3-ols (“catechins”). However, besides flavan-3-ols, there are other compounds present in tea that could be accounted as potential bioactive compounds. Therefore, the objective of the present review is to provide a new perspective on the health benefits associated with tea consumption by critically analyzing the available literature on the potential tea bioactive compounds and the current level of scientific evidence for these health benefits. Until now the exact mechanisms of action or compounds responsible for the health benefits associated with tea consumption have only been poorly investigated. It is important to consider that tea compounds will be extensively metabolized to different metabolites that will, most likely, be the compounds circulating in blood and potentially reaching the different sites of action.

Abstract:We provide an update on the health benefits of white and green teas in this review, based on recent research done to present. After a general introduction, we have focused on the tea's anti‐obesity and human health‐promoting potentials, adverse effects, and new approaches to the tea and its bioactive compounds. It has been found that tea's health benefits are due to its bioactive components, mainly phenolic compounds. Of these, catechins are most abundant. This beverage (or its extracts) has potential anti‐inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could contribute to body weight control and improvement of several chronic diseases. However, some studies have mentioned the possibility of toxic effects, so reducing tea consumption is a good idea, especially during pregnancy's last trimester. Additionally, new evidence will provide insight into the possible effects of tea on human gut microbiota and even on the viruses responsible for SARS‐CoV‐2. A beverage like this may favor beneficial gut microbes, which may have important implications due to the influence gut microbiota has on human health. White tea, which is a variety of green teas, is very popular in China and is highly revered for its taste. Presently, both teas are consumed in other countries around the world, even as functional ingredients, and novel research is constantly being conducted in these areas. Abstract:Cancers are causing millions of deaths and leaving a huge clinical and economic burden. High costs of cancer drugs are limiting their access to the growing number of cancer cases. The development of more affordable alternative therapy could reach more patients. As gut microbiota plays a significant role in the development and treatment of cancer, microbiome-targeted therapy has gained more attention in recent years. Dietary and natural compounds can modulate gut microbiota composition while providing broader and more accessible access to medicine. Tea compounds have been shown to have anti-cancer properties as well as modulate the gut microbiota and their related metabolites. However, there is no comprehensive review that focuses on the gut modulatory effects of tea compounds and their impact on reshaping the metabolic profiles, particularly in cancer models. In this review, the effects of different tea compounds on gut microbiota in cancer settings are discussed. Furthermore, the relationship between these modulated bacteria and their related metabolites, along with the mechanisms of how these changes led to cancer intervention are summarized.

Abstract:Interaction of tea phenolics with gut microbiota may play an integral role in the health benefits of these bioactive compounds, yet this interaction is not fully understood. Here, the metabolic fate of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and its impact on gut microbiota were integrally investigated viain vitro fermentation. As revealed by ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography hybrid quadrupole Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS), EGCG was promptly degraded into a series of metabolites, including 4-phenylbutyric acid, 3-(3′,4′-dihydroxyphenyl)propionic acid, and 3-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid, through consecutive ester hydrolysis, C-ring opening, A-ring fission, dehydroxylation, and aliphatic chain shortening. Microbiome profiling indicated that, compared to the blank, EGCG treatment resulted in stimulation of the beneficial bacteria Bacteroides, Christensenellaceae, and Bifidobacterium. Additionally, the pathogenic bacteria Fusobacterium varium, Bilophila, and Enterobacteriaceae were inhibited. Furthermore, changes in concentrations of metabolites, including 4-phenylbutyric acid and phenylacetic acid, were strongly correlated with changes in the abundance of specific gut microbiota. These reciprocal interactions between EGCG and gut microbiota may collectively contribute to the health benefits of EGCG.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:SCOPE: The effects of green tea polyphenols, Polyphenon E (PPE), and black tea polyphenols, theaflavins (TFs), on gut microbiota and development of diabetes in db/db mice are investigated and compared.METHODS AND RESULTS: Supplementation of PPE (0.1%) in the diet of female db/db mice for 7 weeks decreases fasting blood glucose levels and mesenteric fat while increasing the serum level of insulin, possibly through protection against β-cell damage. However, TFs are less or not effective. Microbiome analysis through 16S rRNA gene sequencing shows that PPE and TFs treatments significantly alter the bacterial community structure in the cecum and colon, but not in the ileum. The key bacterial phylotypes responding to the treatments are then clustered into 11 co-abundance groups (CAGs). CAGs 6 and 7, significantly increased by PPE but not by TFs, are negatively associated with blood glucose levels. The operational taxonomic units in these CAGs are from two different phyla, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. CAG 10, decreased by PPE and TFs, is positively associated with blood glucose levels.CONCLUSION: Gut microbiota respond to tea polyphenol treatments as CAGs instead of taxa. Some of the CAGs associated with the blood glucose lowering effect are enriched by PPE, but not TFs.

Abstract:Tea (Camellia sinensis) is the most commonly consumed beverage globally after water, with black tea being the most popular type of tea drunk in Britain by people of all ages. The potential for tea to contribute to health and wellness throughout life is worthy of consideration. Tea is a low calorie drink with several bioactive polyphenol ingredients which are well known to have antioxidant activity. Black tea in particular is a source of the amino acid L-theanine which has been linked with benefits for mental, immune and cardiovascular health. Prevalence of poor health, including poor cardiovascular, metabolic, mental, brain, bone and immune health, which may result in serious outcomes, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, cognitive decline and an inability to fight infection, is high in the UK and the European region. Interest in safe, natural ingredients for promoting health and wellness is growing. Whilst tea has been consumed for centuries, its health benefits have emerged more powerfully during recent decades giving scientific credence to the traditional perception that tea makes those who include it in their pattern of daily life feel good. This review collates evidence from human studies which evaluate the health and wellness impacts of tea consumption throughout life including into old age. It explores the evidence available on tea and mental and cognitive health, cardiovascular health, metabolic health, bone health, gut health and immune health. It identifies the bioactive ingredients which are likely contributors to these health impacts and includes evidence from laboratory studies that help to explain the mechanisms by which these benefits may occur. Overall, this review concludes that tea consumption contributes to health and wellness throughout life and that everyone should be encouraged to enjoy three cups daily as part of a healthy lifestyle pattern.

Abstract:Detailed multidisciplinary research on the effect of tea and the associated tea polyphenols has led to major advances on the underlying mechanisms. In most studies, green and black tea have similar effects, four of which are reviewed in this paper. 1) Tea polyphenols are powerful antioxidants that may play a role in lowering the oxidation of LDL-cholesterol, with a consequent decreased risk of heart disease, and also diminish the formation of oxidized metabolites of DNA, with an associated lower risk of specific types of cancer. 2) Tea and tea polyphenols selectively induce Phase I and Phase II metabolic enzymes that increase the formation and excretion of detoxified metabolites of carcinogens. 3) Tea lowers the rate of cell replication and thus the growth and development of neoplasms. 4) Tea modifies the intestinal microflora, reducing undesirable bacteria and increasing beneficial bacteria. The accumulated knowledge suggests that regular tea intake by humans might provide an approach to decrease the incidence of and mortality from major chronic diseases.

TRANSPLANTABLE LYMPHOSARCOMA I N MICE

Abstract:Among the 100 tumors that have been induced in this laboratory during the past year by the injection of 1: 2 : 5: 6-dibenzanthracene into mice were three lymphosarcomata. Lesions of the lymphatic system, lymphoid leukemia and lymphosarcoma have not occurred as a genetic factor in the untreated mice of the pure inbred strains used, although apparently such strains are not uncommon or difficult to obtain by selective breeding. Slye, Korteweg, Mercier and Gosselin, MacDowell and Richter, Dobrovolskaia-Zavadskai'a, Furth and Strumia, and Furth, Seibold and Rathbone have described strains of mice with a genetic tendency to develop lymphadenosis. Furth, Seibold and Rathbone (1933), in studies on five lymphatic neoplasms occurring in the mice of their strains, have reviewed the literature on lymphadenosis in mice. The results of our own investigations add little to the knowledge of diseases of the lymphatic system that has'already been acquired through previous investigations (Slye, Richter and MacDowell, Potter and Richter, Furth, Seibold and Rathbone, Furth and Strumia, Mercier and Gosselin, Korteweg, Krebs and Faber), but since the three lymphosarcomata were induced tumors that arose at the site of an injection of dibenzanthracene and were studied as transplanted sarcomata and not as blood diseases, it is believed that a description of them is important. The first of these tumors was discovered in a mouse of the C3H strain that had been injected 75 days previously. Owing to the illness of the animal, the cyst which had formed around the injected oil and dibenzanthracene was removed and transplanted into a normal mouse of the same strain. Thirtytwo days later the implanted cyst had grown into a large tumor which, when studied in tissue cultures and in stained preparations, proved to be composed of lymphocytes. The number of this tumor was 172 and it has been transplanted through twelve generations into C3H strain mice during a period of 152 days. In every instance the transplanted tumor retained the characteristics of the primary lymphosarcoma. Tiny fragments of the tumor transplanted subcutaneously into normal young C3H strain mice grew to the size used for transplantation, 25 X 15 >(: 5 mm., within two weeks. From that time on the tumors rapidly increased in size (40 X 20 X 5 mm.) and led to the death of the host about a week later. The tumor proved to be strain specific; while it grew in every one of the Bar Harbor C3H strain mice into which it was transplanted, it failed to grow when implanted into mice of the A, BA or C:., strains. Abstract:Tea polyphenols (TP) are the main components in tea. Studies in vitro have shown they have significant biological activity; however, the results are inconsistent with experiments in vivo. For the low bioavailability, most TP are thought to remain in the gut and metabolized by intestinal bacteria. In the gut, the unabsorbed TP are metabolized to a variety of derivative products by intestinal flora, which may accumulate to exert beneficial effects. Numerous studies have shown that TP can inhibit obesity and its related metabolism disorders effectively. Meanwhile, it has demonstrated that TP and their derivatives may modulate intestinal micro-ecology. The understanding of the interaction between TP and intestinal microbiota will allow us to better evaluate the contribution of microbial metabolites of TP to the anti-obesity activity. This review showed implications for the use of TP as functional food with potential therapeutic utility against obesity by modulating intestinal microbiota, contributing to the improvement of human health.
