Abstract:A novel phenomenon is reported, wherein, if a mother droplet spreads faster than its critical velocity on a superhydrophilic surface, a smaller daughter droplet is emitted in a process that is controlled both dynamically and thermodynamically. Using a high-speed camera, we directly observed that while the lower part of the droplet spread, the upper part remained unchanged at first, and a temporary meniscus bridge formed in between. This meniscus bridge became unstable owing to capillary pressure, and broke when the lower part spread faster than its critical velocity, emitting the upper part as a daughter droplet. Through modeling and varying experimental parameters such as contact velocity, contact angle and surface structure, we determined that droplet emission could only be achieved by ultrafast spreading on superhydrophilic surfaces. The insights from these observations are helpful for the creation and application of special wettable surfaces.
Role of surfactant-induced Marangoni effects in droplet dynamics on a solid surface in shear flow

Abstract:We address the dynamics of a surfactant-laden droplet on a solid surface in simple shear flow numerically. Our analysis uses the front-tracking method to take surfactant transport into account. The interfacial tension and the slip coefficient, both of which depend heavily on the surfactant concentration, are fully integrated into the generalized Navier boundary condition to model the moving contact lines. Accurate prediction of droplet motion indicates that the surfactant can change droplet behavior drastically. Surfactant-induced effects, such as interfacial tension reduction, the Marangoni stress, and wettability alternation, are investigated for various capillary numbers, surface wettabilities, elasticity numbers, and surface Péclet numbers. Deformation and motion of a sliding droplet are enhanced by the Marangoni effect, which is associated with an interfacial tension gradient. When the capillary number reaches a critical value, the sliding-to-detachment and detachment-to-pinch-off transitions occur. Both transitions can be triggered and accelerated by a surfactant, especially when convection is dominant. As a result, the critical capillary number decreases, but exhibits a non-monotonic relationship with the elasticity number and Péclet number. The mechanisms that underlie the effect of Marangoni stress are discussed by analyzing the distributions of the surfactant concentration and the hydrodynamic forces exerted on the droplet. Accumulation of surfactants near the receding contact line reverses the local concentration gradient, attempts to change its direction along the interface, and delays droplet detachment. Furthermore, the strong surfactant dilution reduces both the surfactant concentration and the interfacial tension gradient, and thereby increasing the critical value for droplet pinch-off.

Abstract:We provide comprehensive numerical insights into the displacement of droplets subject to soluble surfactant-driven flows. The effects of soluble surfactants on the dynamics of moving contact lines are introduced by the surfactant-dependent generalized Navier boundary condition. We show that surfactant transport significantly influences the displacement patterns of droplets on solid surfaces, affecting both the equilibrium state of the sliding motion and the critical conditions for detachment. In particular, a linear increase in the displacement velocity of a droplet with the dimensionless adsorption depth K is observed. This rate of increase is more pronounced at higher elasticity numbers, as evidenced by a more significant increase in the advancing contact angle. The critical condition for droplet detachment depends on the surfactant's ability to swiftly adsorb from the bulk and replenish at interfaces, which is improved as the Biot number Bi or K increases. Adsorption is enhanced by an increase in Bi, resulting in a decrease in the required time td for droplet detachment. However, this enhancement effect becomes nonmonotonic at high Bi values. In contrast, consistently increasing the bulk Peclet number decreases td , eventually approaching the convection limit where the Marangoni-induced drag force ceases to increase. In addition, surfactant transfer near the moving contact line at a moderate Damköhler number restricts the motion of the advancing contact lines, promoting droplet detachment. Abstract:We propose a theory for the multi-ring pattern of the deposits that are formed when droplets of suspension are dried on a substrate. Assuming a standard model for the stick-slip motion of the contact line, we show that as droplets evaporate, many concentric rings of deposits are formed, but are taken over by a solid-circle pattern in the final stage of drying. An analytical expression is given to indicate when ring-pattern changes to solid-circle pattern during an evaporation process. The results are in qualitative agreement with existing experiments, and the other predictions on how the evaporation rate, droplet radius and receding contact angle affect the pattern are all subject to experimental test.

Abstract:In this research, a three-dimensional model is proposed to simulate the behavior of particle-covered droplets that contain soluble surfactant. The model includes a full two-way coupling between surfactant transport and particle motion, with surfactant concentrations at the interface and in the bulk linked to the flow and motion of the interface by a convection-diffusion equation. A front-tracking method is used to track the interfacial flow, while a semi-resolved particle method is used to model the particles, accounting for various forces acting on them, such as the excluded volume force, the direct contact force and the hydrodynamic lubrication force. The model also includes a surfactant-dependent surface tension that can affect the particle-interface interactions. The model is validated against previous numerical data and a parametric study is performed to examine the delicate interplay between flow fields and interfaces associated with surfactant concentration and particle motion. The study then investigates the role of surfactants in the dynamics of a particle-covered droplet, focusing on their coupled influence on droplet deformation. In addition, it is observed that particles bridge colliding droplet interfaces and suppress fluid drainage from the gap, preventing droplet coalescence along with the interparticle repulsion force.
Impact of Droplets on Liquid Films in the Presence of Surfactant.

Abstract:The impact of droplets on liquid films is ubiquitous in natural and industrial processes, and surfactants can significantly alter the impact process by changing the local surface tension. Here we study the impact of droplets on liquid films in the presence of surfactant using high-speed photography, and reveal the flow pattern by dye-tracing. The effects of the droplet size and speed, and the initial film thickness on the impact process are elucidated. The results show that the flow is significantly affected by adding surfactant to the droplet, the liquid film, or to both phases. In particular, the film dye patterns form concentric circles and flower-shaped structures at low and high droplet Weber numbers, respectively. We also show how surfactant-induced Marangoni stresses modify these flow patterns, and alter the characteristics of the phenomena associated with the impact process, such as the propagation of capillary waves, the evolution of the crown, and the formation of secondary droplets. During the impact of surfactant droplets on thin water films, the Marangoni stresses can be sufficiently strong so as to drive film dewetting.

Abstract:We study spreading of a droplet, with insoluble surfactant covering its capillary surface, on a textured substrate. In this process, the surfactant-dependent surface tension dominates the behaviors of the whole dynamics, particularly the moving contact lines. This allows us to derive the full dynamics of the droplets laid by the insoluble surfactant: (i) the moving contact lines, (ii) the evolution of the capillary surface, (iii) the surfactant dynamics on this moving surface with a boundary condition at the contact lines and (iv) the incompressible viscous fluids inside the droplet. Our derivations base on Onsager's principle with Rayleigh dissipation functionals for either the viscous flow inside droplets or the motion by mean curvature of the capillary surface. We also prove the Rayleigh dissipation functional for viscous flow case is stronger than the one for the motion by mean curvature. After incorporating the textured substrate profile, we design a numerical scheme based on unconditionally stable explicit boundary updates and moving grids, which enable efficient computations for many challenging examples showing significant impacts of the surfactant to the deformation of droplets.

Abstract:Spreading of water drops resting in equilibrium on polypropylene surfaces was initiated by dispensing surfactant-laden droplets on their apex. Upon contact of the two drops two processes were kicked-off: surfactant from the droplets spread along the water/air interface of the sessile drops and a train of capillary waves propagated along the sessile drops. The contact line of the sessile drops remained initially pinned and started spreading only when surfactant reached it while the capillary waves did not have an apparent effect on initiating drop spreading. However, surfactant influenced the propagation velocity of the capillary waves. Though the spreading dynamics of such nonhomogeneously mixed surfactant/water drops on polypropylene surfaces was initially different from that of homogeneously mixed drops, the later spreading dynamics was similar and was dominated by viscosity and surface tension in both cases. These results can help in discriminating the path of action of surfactants in bulk and at the water/air interface, which is also relevant for understanding phenomena such as superspreading.
Contact Angle of an Evaporating Droplet of Binary Solution on a Super Wetting Surface

Abstract:We study the dynamics of contact angle of a droplet of binary solution evaporating on a super wetting surface. Recent experiments show that although equilibrium contact angle of such droplet is zero, the contract angle can show complex time dependence before reaching the equilibrium value. We analyse such phenomena by extending our previous theory for the dynamics of an evaporating single component droplet to double component droplet. We show that the time dependence of the contact angle can be quite complex. Typically, it first decreases slightly, and then increases and finally decreases again. Under certain conditions, we find that the contact angle remains constant over a certain period of time during evaporation. We study how the plateau or peak contact angle depends on the initial composition and the humidity. The theory explains experimental results reported previously.

Abstract:With most of the focus to date having been on the coalescence of freely suspended droplets, much less is known about the coalescence of sessile droplets, especially in the case of droplets laden with surfactant. Here, we employ large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to investigate this phenomenon on substrates with different wettability. In particular, we unravel the mass transport mechanism of surfactant during coalescence, thus explaining the key mechanisms present in the process. Close similarities are found between the coalescence of sessile droplets with equilibrium contact angles above 90° and that of freely suspended droplets, being practically the same when the contact angle of the sessile droplets is above 140°. Here, the initial contact point is an area that creates an initial contact film of surfactant that proceeds to break into engulfed aggregates. A major change in the physics appears below the 90° contact angle, when the initial contact point becomes small and line-like, strongly affecting many aspects of the process and allowing water to take part in the coalescence from the beginning. We find growth exponents consistent with a 2/3 power law on strongly wettable substrates but no evidence of linear growth. Overall bridge growth speed increases with wettability for all surfactant concentrations, but the speeding up effect becomes weaker as surfactant concentration grows, along with a general slowdown of the coalescence compared to pure water. Concurrently, the duration of the initial thermally limited regime increases strongly by almost an order of magnitude for strongly wettable substrates.

Abstract:An evaporating droplet is a dynamic system in which flow is spontaneously generated to minimize the surface energy, dragging particles to the borders and ultimately resulting in the so-called "coffee-stain effect". The situation becomes more complex at the droplet's surface, where surface tension gradients of different nature can compete with each other yielding different scenarios. With careful experiments and with the aid of 3D particle tracking techniques, we are able to show that different types of surfactants turn the droplet's surface either rigid or elastic, which alters the evaporating fluid flow, either enhancing the classical coffee-stain effect or leading to a total flow inversion. Our measurements lead to unprecedented and detailed measurements of the surface tension difference along an evaporating droplet's surface with good temporal and spatial resolution.

Unsteady Motion of A Single Droplet in Surfactant Solutions

Abstract:A numerical investigation of the unsteady motion of a deformed drop released freely in another quiescent liquid contaminated by surfactant is presented in this paper. The finite difference method was used to solve numerically the coupled time-dependent Navier-Stokes and convective-diffusion equations in a body-fitted orthogonal coordinate system. Numerical simulation was conducted on the experimental cases, in which MIBK drops with the size ranging from 1.24 mm to 1.97 mm. rose and accelerated freely in pure water and in dilute sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) aqueous solution. The applicability of the numerical scheme was validated by the agreement between the simulation results and the experimental data. Both the numerical and experimental results showed that the velocity-time profile exhibited a maximum rising velocity for drops in SDS solutions, which was close to the terminal velocity in pure water, before it dropped down to a steady-state value. The effect of the sorption kinetics of surfactant on the accelerating motion was also evaluated. It is also suggested that introduction of virtual mass force into the formulation improved obviously the precision of numerical simulation of transient drop motion.

Abstract:Nanofluids hold promise for a wide range of areas of industry. However, understanding of wetting behavior and deposition formation in course of drying and spreading of nanofluids, particularly containing surfactants, is still poor. In this paper, the evaporation dynamics of quantum dot-based nanofluids and evaporation-driven self-assembly in nanocolloidal suspensions on hexamethyldisilazane-, polystyrene-, and polypropylene-coated hydrophobic surfaces have been studied experimentally. Moreover, for the very first time, we make a step to understanding of wetting dynamics of superspreader surfactant-laden nanofluids. It was revealed that drying of surfactant-free quantum dot nanofluids in contrast to pure liquids undergoes not three but four evaporation modes including last additional pinning mode when contact angle decreases whilst triple contact line is pinned by the nanocrystals. In contrast to previous studies, it was found out that addition of nanoparticles to aqueous surfactant solutions leads to deterioration of spreading rate and to formation of double coffee ring. For all surfaces examined, superspreading in presence and absence of quantum dot nanoparticles takes place. Despite the formation of coffee rings on all substrates, they have different morphology. Particularly, the knot-like structures are incorporated into the ring on hexamethyldisilazane- and polystyrene-coated surfaces

Impact of droplets onto surfactant-laden thin liquid films

Abstract:We study the effect of insoluble surfactants on the impact of surfactant-free droplets on surfactant-laden thin liquid films via a fully three-dimensional direct numerical simulations approach that employs a hybrid interface-tracking/level-set method, and by taking into account surfactant-induced Marangoni stresses due to gradients in interfacial surfactant concentration. Our numerical predictions for the temporal evolution of the surfactant-free crown are validated against the experimental work by Che and Matar (2017). We focus on the crown-splash regime, and we observe that the crown dynamics evolves through various stages: from the the growth of linear modes (through a Rayleigh- Plateau instability) to the development of nonlinearities leading to primary and secondary breakup events (through droplet shedding modulated by an end-pinching mechanism). We show that the addition of surfactants does not affect the wave selection via the Rayleigh-Plateau instability. However, the presence of surfactants plays a key role in the late stages of the dynamics as soon as the ligaments are driven out from the rim. Surfactant-induced Marangoni stresses delay the end-pinching mechanisms to result in longer ligaments prior to their capillary singularity, while also promoting the spanwise merging between ligaments. Finally, we show that the addition of surfactants leads to surface rigidification and consequently to the retardation of the flow dynamics.

Changing the flow profile and resulting drying pattern of dispersion droplets via contact angle modification

Abstract:Spilling tea or coffee leads to a tell-tale circular stain after the droplet dries, known as the "coffee ring effect". The evaporation of suspension droplets is a complex physical process, and predicting and controlling the particle deposit patterns from sessile droplet evaporation are essential for many industrial processes, such as ink-jet printing and crop-care applications. In this article, we systematically investigate the effect of surface wettability on the evaporation dynamics of a particle-laden droplet, focussing on the contact line stick-slip behaviour, the hydrodynamic flow of the suspended particles, and the resulting particle deposit after evaporation. We use substrates with different wettabilities, ranging from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, and quantify the internal flow during the evaporation by tracking (fluorescent) tracer particles. We find that the internal flow shifts from a predominantly outward flow towards the contact line for low contact angles to an inward flow for large contact angles. Correspondingly, the particle deposit transitions from the typical coffee-ring pattern to a central stain as the substrates's hydrophobicity increases. Finally, we corroborate these experimental findings with dynamic density functional theory, modelling the droplet evaporation process and stick-slip behaviour of the contact line. Our investigation suggests that the wettability of the substrate can significantly alter hydrodynamic flow within drying droplets, thereby affecting the resulting particle deposit.

Abstract:The surfactant-driven spreading of droplets is an essential process in many applications ranging from coating flow technology to enhanced oil recovery. Despite the significant advancement in describing spreading processes in surfactant-laden droplets, including the exciting phenomena of superspreading, many features of the underlying mechanisms require further understanding. Here, we have carried out molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained model with a force-field obtained from the statistical associating fluid theory to study droplets laden with common and superspreading surfactants. We have confirmed the important elements of the superspreading mechanism, i.e. the adsorption of surfactant at the contact line and the fast replenishment of surfactant from the bulk. Through a detailed comparison of a range of droplets with different surfactants, our analysis has indicated that the ability of surfactant to adsorb at the interfaces is the key feature of the superspreading mechanism. To this end, surfactants that tend to form aggregates and have a strong hydrophobic attraction in the aggregated cores prevent the fast replenishment of the interfaces, resulting in reduced spreading ability. We also show that various surfactant properties, such as diffusion and architecture, play a secondary role in the spreading process. Moreover, we discuss various drop properties such as the height, contact angle, and surfactant surface concentration, highlighting differences between superspreading and common surfactants. We anticipate that our study will provide further insight for applications requiring the control of wetting.

Abstract:The dynamics of many multiphase fluid systems involve the thinning and eventual break up of a slender fluid filament or a liquid jet. The interfacial instability that controls the rate of jet thinning depends on the relative magnitudes of capillary, viscous, and inertial stresses. Surfactants add an additional layer of physicochemical dynamics by reducing the surface tension of the interface and introducing reverse Marangoni flows in response to surface concentration gradients. Surfactants may also introduce an intrinsic surface rheology that affects jet thinning. Quantifying these effects has been a significant problem in chemical physics and a topic of key research interest. Recent studies have shown that insoluble surfactants delay thread thinning and suppress instabilities in Newtonian jets. However, the role of surfactant solubility in liquid jet stability is still unknown. In this work, we use linear stability analysis to quantitatively show the stabilizing effects of Marangoni stresses, surfactant adsorption and desorption time, and intermolecular forces upon adsorption. We highlight the seemingly indistinguishable way in which various surfactant properties result in the same outcome. We also identify a surface dissipative contribution that arises from the interplay of Marangoni flows with finite adsorption and desorption, which acts as an “apparent” surface viscosity. We verify predictions of our linear stability results against numerical simulations and conclude by noting that tuning surface activity and kinetics of adsorbed surfactants or particles can potentially suppress droplet formation, which is of significant impact in the printing industry and in the control of the spread of aerosols.

Abstract:The dewetting phenomenon of a liquid film in the presence of a surfactant exists in various natural, industrial, and biomedical processes but still remains mysterious in some specific scenarios. Here, we investigate the dewetting behavior of water films initiated by surfactant-laden droplet impact and show that the maximum dewetting diameter can even reach more than 50 times that of the droplet size. We identify the S-type variation of the dewetting area and demonstrate its correlation to the dynamic surface tension reduction. From a viewpoint of energy conversion, we attribute the dewetting to the released surface energy caused by the surfactant addition and establish a linear relation between the maximum dewetting and the surfactant concentration in the film, i.e., dmax2 ∝ cfilm, which agrees well with the experiments. These results may advance the physics of liquid film dewetting triggered by surfactant injection, which shall further guide practical applications.
