Abstract:Conventional absorption spectroscopy falls short in complexity and measurement speed. Here, a new type of compressive sensing absorption spectroscopy technique employing a photoelastic modulator (PEM) is presented to address these challenges. The PEM is used to modulate the input spectrum and create multiple harmonic orders as the measurement channels. A sensing matrix is formed by randomly selecting elements from the modulation matrix. The measurement results of different frequency channels are simultaneously captured via a single-pixel photodetector without changing the physical parameters (such as PEM configurations or modulation frequencies). In a measurement example, the first five orders of harmonics are selected, and the input optical spectrum is successfully measured with a compression ratio of 1/16. To further verify the utility of our approach, the infrared spectrum with CO2 absorption is successfully reconstructed with low error.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problems of complexity and slow measurement speed in traditional absorption spectroscopy techniques. Specifically, traditional spectrometers usually rely on mechanisms such as spectral component separation or time - domain interference when detecting spectral signals. Although these methods can achieve high - spectral resolution, they are often accompanied by disadvantages such as high system complexity, high cost, and slow measurement speed. To overcome these challenges, the authors proposed a compressive - sensing absorption spectroscopy technique based on a photoelastic modulator (PEM) and a single - pixel detector. ### Main innovation points: 1. **Use of photoelastic modulator (PEM)**: PEM is used to modulate the input spectrum and generate multiple harmonic orders as measurement channels. This method can capture the measurement results of different frequency channels simultaneously without changing the physical parameters of the system (such as PEM configuration or modulation frequency). 2. **Application of compressive - sensing technology**: Through compressive - sensing technology, the number of required measurements can be significantly reduced while maintaining high accuracy. For example, in one experiment, the authors successfully measured the input spectrum with a compression ratio of 1/16. 3. **Single - pixel detector**: Using a single - pixel detector instead of an array detector simplifies the system structure, reduces costs, and increases the measurement speed. ### Experimental verification: - **Experimental setup**: The authors used black - body radiation as a background light source and added CO₂ absorption spectral lines for testing. In the experiment, the first five harmonic orders were selected for measurement. - **Results**: Through the compressive - sensing algorithm, an infrared spectrum containing CO₂ absorption characteristics was successfully reconstructed, with a relative error of only 4.6%. ### Significance: - **High efficiency**: This method can significantly reduce the amount of data collection without sacrificing accuracy, thereby reducing the requirements for high - speed ADCs and large - capacity storage. - **Application prospects**: This technique is expected to be widely used in fields such as high - throughput analysis and rapid target recognition, especially in scenarios where a large amount of data needs to be processed in real - time. In conclusion, this paper proposes a new absorption spectroscopy method that combines photoelastic modulators and compressive - sensing technology, effectively solving the complexity and speed problems in traditional spectroscopy techniques.
