Abstract:Recently, the direct utilization of plasmonic metal nanostructures in accelerating the electrochemical reactions reveals the importance of hot charge carriers generated by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). However, the effect of morphological forms of the same metal element on direct plasmon-enhanced electrocatalytic activity has not yet been well documented. Herein, four kinds of Au nanostructures with different morphologies of nanospheres (NSPs), nanorods (NRs), nanostars (NSs), and triangular nanoplates (NPLs) were synthesized. The shape-dependent plasmonic enhancement effect of Au nanostructures toward the electrooxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) was studied. We find that the electrochemistry of AA oxidation on these Au nanostructures can be enhanced upon light irradiation with the higher enhancement effect of the Au NPLs and NSs than the Au NSPs and NRs. This shape-dependent enhancement effect is suggested to be related to the number of "hot spots" in different NP surfaces generated from Au LSPR Thus, the present work would shed new light on the direct plasmon-enhanced electrochemistry, which helps in widening the potential applications of plasmonic materials in electrochemical sensors and electrochemical energy conversion.
Plasmon-Enhanced Photocatalysis Using Gold Nanoparticles Encapsulated in Nanoscale Molybdenum Oxide Shell

Abstract:Using solar energy to enhance the transformation rate of organic molecules is a promising strategy to advance chemical synthesis and environmental remediation. Plasmonic nanoparticles responsive to sunlight show great promise in the catalysis of chemical reactions. In this work, we used a straightforward wet-chemistry method to synthesize plasmonic octahedral gold nanoparticles (NPs) coated with thin molybdenum oxide (MoO3-x), Au@MoO3-x NPs, which exhibited strong surface plasmon resonance in a broad wavelength range. The synthesized Au@MoO3-x NPs were characterized by UV-Vis, SEM, TEM, EDS, XPS, and the electrochemical technique of cyclic voltammetry (CV). The catalytic performance of Au@MoO3-x NPs under visible light irradiation was investigated using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) as a model reaction. The presence of a thin capping layer of MoO3-x on our Au NPs contributed to the broadening of their range of absorption of visible light, resulting in a stronger intra-particle plasmonic resonance and the modulation of surface energy and electronic state. Accordingly, the kinetics of plasmon photocatalytic transformation of 4-NP to 4-AP was significantly accelerated (by a factor of 8.1) under visible light, compared to uncapped Au NPs in the dark. Our as-synthesized Au@MoO3-x NPs is an example that the range of plasmonic wavelengths of NPs can be effectively broadened by coating them with another plasmon-active (semiconducting) material, which substantially improves their plasmonic photocatalytic performance. Meanwhile, the synthesized Au@MoO3-x NPs can be used to accelerate the transformation of organic molecules under visible light irradiation.

Light-concentrating plasmonic Au superstructures with significantly visible-light-enhanced catalytic performance.

Abstract:Noble metals are well-known for their surface plasmon resonance effect that enables strong light absorption typically in the visible regions for gold and silver. However, unlike semiconductors, noble metals are commonly considered incapable of catalyzing reactions via photogenerated electron-hole pairs due to their continuous energy band structures. So far, photonically activated catalytic system based on pure noble metal nanostructures has seldom been reported. Here, we report the development of three different novel plasmonic Au superstructures comprised of Au nanoparticles, multiple-twinned nanoparticles and nanoworms assembling on the surfaces of SiO2 nanospheres respectively via a well-designed synthetic strategy. It is found that these novel Au superstructures show enhanced broadband visible-light absorption due to the plasmon resonance coupling within the superstructures, and thus can effectively focus the energy of photon fluxes to generate much more excited hot electrons and holes for promoting catalytic reactions. Accordingly, these Au superstructures exhibit significantly visible-light-enhanced catalytic efficiency (up to ∼264% enhancement) for the commercial reaction of p-nitrophenol reduction.

Abstract:Single particle plasmon scattering can provide real-time imaging information on the synthesis of nanomaterials. Here, an electrochemical deposition strategy is reported to synthesize plasmonic Au@Metal core-shell nanoparticles (Au@M NPs), which exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties. Because of the excellent catalytic activity of the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), Pt, Pd, and Rh were reduced on the surface of Au NPs to form monometallic and bimetallic shells. Under dark field microscopy (DFM), the scattering changes could be utilized to track the surface nucleation and bulk deposition process. The synthesized Au@M NPs, which combined the plasmonic and electrocatalytic features, showed greatly enhanced activity for MOR. Under LSPR excitation, the electroxidation process toward MOR was accelerated and increased approximately linearly with increased illumination intensity, which could be mostly attributed to the generation of energetic charge carriers. This strategy of real-time plasmonic tracking electrochemical deposition at the single particle level is facile and universal, which could be extended to the precise synthesis of other plasmonic core-shell nanomaterials and the investigation of the pathway of plasmon accelerated chemical conversion.
Trimetallic Nanostructures of Silver–Platinum Alloy Shells on Gold Nanorods for Plasmon-Mediated Photocatalysis

Abstract:The localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) in plasmonic nanoparticles have been used in accelerating photocatalytic reactions under light illumination. To improve the catalytic performance, bimetallic nanoparticles composed of a plasmonic core and a catalytic shell, where LSPR-excited hot electrons and the intrinsic catalytic active sites work synergistically, have attracted much attention. Despite progress in designing bimetallic catalysts, balancing the strong LSPR and catalytic sites remains challenging. Here, a trimetallic nanostructure containing a gold nanorod (AuNR) core and a silver-platinum (AgPt) hollow alloy shell was designed and used as a plasmon-mediated photocatalyst for methylene blue reduction reaction. Specifically, the AuNRs covered by a thin layer of Ag (Au@Ag) were used as the template to deposit Pt, forming a Au@AgPt trimetallic nanostructure. By changing the Ag and/or Pt precursor concentration, the external layer could be varied from AgPt heterostructure and AgPt hollow alloy shell to AuAgPt alloy dendrites. Using methylene blue as a model system, the photocatalytic reduction reaction was studied by adding the obtained nanoparticles as catalysts under visible and near-infrared light irradiation. The optimal photocatalytic performance of the trimetallic nanoparticles was seen with the AgPt hollow alloy shell, and the reaction rate is similar to 7 times higher than that of the reaction without catalysts and similar to 3 times higher than that of monometallic AuNRs, bimetallic Au@Ag, and Au@Pt nanorods. Plasmon energy transfer from the AuNRs to the AgPt layer, which enhances the charge-carrier generation, is responsible for outstanding photocatalytic performance. The approach used here to synthesize Au@AgPt trimetallic nanostructures is suitable for the design of other multimetallic photocatalysts.
Plasmonic Catalytic Layer for Visible-Light Enhanced Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Abstract:Methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) has been an important topic in electrochemical fuel cells [1]. However, the slow kinetics of MOR brings the bottleneck that directly limits the efficiency of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Traditionally, platinum (Pt) based alloys, e.g. PtRu, PtAu, PtCu, and etc., are used as the catalysts for MOR [2]. Aiming at enhancing the MOR, titanium dioxide and other semiconductors have also been introduced to the anodic design of DMFCs [3]. Many nano-composite have been proposed as the catalysts for MOR, including Pt-TiO2 [4], Pt-ZnO [5], Pt-WO3 [6] and etc.. In another field of physical chemistry, plasmonic catalysis has been a rising field in photochemistry for more than one decade [7]. Noble metals, e.g., gold (Au), silver (Ag), Pt are common candidates for plasmonic catalysis. Besides, nano-composites , e.g., Ag-SiO2, Au-TiO2, Au-SiO2, and etc., have also attracted enormous attentions. By utilizing metallic nanostructures and/or metal-semiconductor nano-composites, visible light can be harvested and transformed into chemical energy to trigger or enhance chemical reactions, e.g. water splitting [8], hydrogen dissociation [9], steam reforming of ethanol [10], degradation of ammonium [11]. In this paper, self-supported metallic nano-dendrites are proposed as plasmonc catalytic layer for visible-light enhanced methanol oxidation reaction. Besides, an extra facile fluoride assisted galvanic replacement was proposed to prepare self-supported Ag and Ag nano-dendrites on Si base. These structures can be achieved by simply immersing Si wafers into the mixture of AgNO3 (or HAuCl4) and buffered oxide etchant (BOE) under ambient conditions within 5 minutes [12, 13]. The prepared Au (or Ag) nano-dendrites were used to boost methanol oxidation reaction under visible-light illumination (AM 1.5G). Obvious photo-enhancement on the oxidation current (28%) was achieved on Au nano-dendrites. A comparative study was conducted by measuring the photo-enhancement under various illumination wavelengths. The best photo-response was found at 700 nm. Moreover, the self-supported Au nano-dendrites with various pore sizes and branch sizes not only provide high aspect surface area but also enable a broadband plasmonic enhancement. In summary, we proposed a cost-effective and facile approach to prepare Ag and Au dendrites on Si base under ambient conditions. Both Ag and Au nano-dendrites show promising potential in plasmon enhanced methanol oxidation reaction. We expect these structures may soon find application in photo-electrochemical cells. Hybrid Au-Ag Nanostructures for Enhanced Plasmon-Driven Catalytic Selective Hydrogenation through Visible Light Irradiation and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering.

Abstract:Herein, we report the successful application of hybrid Au-Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and nanochains (NCs) in the harvesting of visible light energy for selective hydrogenation reactions. For individual Au@Ag NPs with Au25 cores, the conversion and turnover frequency (TOF) are approximately 8 and 10 times higher than those of Au25 NPs, respectively. Notably, after the self-assembly of the Au@Ag NPs, the conversion and TOF of 1D NCs were approximately 2.5 and 2 times higher than those of isolated Au@Ag NPs, respectively, owing to the coupling of surface plasmon and the increase in the rate at which hot (energetic) electrons are generated with the formation of plasmonic hot spots between NPs. Furthermore, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity of 1D Au@Ag NCs was strengthened by nearly 2 orders of magnitude.

Oxidative Etching and Metal Overgrowth of Gold Nanorods Within Mesoporous Silica Shells

Abstract:Composite noble metal-based nanorods for which the surface plasmon resonances can be tuned by composition and geometry are highly interesting for applications in biotechnology, imaging, sensing, optoelectronics, photovoltaics, and catalysis. Here, we present an approach for the oxidative etching and subsequent metal overgrowth of gold nanorods, all taking place while the nanorods are embedded in mesoporous SiO2 shells (AuNRs@meso-SiO2). Heating of the AuNRs@meso-SiO2 in methanol with HCl resulted in reproducible oxidation of the AuNRs by dissolved O-2, specifically at the rod ends, enabling precise control over the aspect ratio of the rods. The etched-AuNRs@meso-SiO2 were used as a template for the overgrowth of a second metal (Ag, Pd, and Pt), yielding bimetallic, core-shell structured nanorods. By varying the reaction rates of the metal deposition both smooth core-shell structures or gold nanorods covered with a dendritic overlayer could be made. This control over the morphology, including metal composition, and thus the plasmonic properties of the composite rods were measured experimentally and also confirmed by Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) calculations. The presented synthesis method gives great control over tuning over both plasmonic properties and the particle stability/affinity for specific applications.
Au@AuPd Core-Alloyed Shell Nanoparticles for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Activity and Selectivity under Visible Light Excitation

Abstract:Plasmonic catalysis has been employed to enhance molecular transformations under visible light excitation, leveraging the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in plasmonic nanoparticles. While plasmonic catalysis has been employed for accelerating reaction rates, achieving control over the reaction selectivity has remained a challenge. In addition, the incorporation of catalytic components into traditional plasmonic-catalytic antenna-reactor nanoparticles often leads to a decrease in optical absorption. To address these issues, this study focuses on the synthesis of bimetallic core@shell Au@AuPd nanoparticles (NPs) with ultralow loadings of palladium (Pd) into gold (Au) NPs. The goal is to achieve NPs with an Au core and a dilute alloyed shell containing both Au and Pd, with a low Pd content of around 10 atom %. By employing the (photo)electrocatalytic nitrite reduction reaction (NO2RR) as a model transformation, experimental and theoretical analyses show that this design enables enhanced catalytic activity and selectivity under visible light illumination. We found that the optimized Pd distribution in the alloyed shell allowed for stronger interaction with key adsorbed species, leading to improved catalytic activity and selectivity, both under no illumination and under visible light excitation conditions. The findings provide valuable insights for the rational design of antenna-reactor plasmonic-catalytic NPs with controlled activities and selectivity under visible light irradiation, addressing critical challenges to enable sustainable molecular transformations.
Structure-Adjustable Gold Nanoingots with Strong Plasmon Coupling and Magnetic Resonance for Improved Photocatalytic Activity and SERS

Abstract:Au nanoingots, on which an Au nanosphere is accurately placed in an open Au shell, are synthesized through a controllable hydrothermal method. The prepared Au nanoingots exhibit an adjustable cavity structure, strong plasmon coupling, tunable magnetic plasmon resonance, and prominent photocatalytic and SERS performances. Au nanoingots exhibit two resonance peaks in the extinction spectrum, one (around 550 nm) is ascribed to electric dipole resonance coming from the central Au, and the other one (650–800 nm) is ascribed to the magnetic dipole resonance originating from the open Au shell. Numerical simulations verify that the intense electric and magnetic fields locate in the bowl-shaped nanogap between the Au nanosphere and shell, and they can be further optimized by changing the size of the outer Au shell. Au nanoingots with the largest shell have the strongest electric field because of large-area plasmon coupling, while Au nanoingots with the largest shell opening size have the strongest magnetic field. As a result, the structure-adjustable Au nanoingots show a high tunability and enhancement of catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol and SERS detection of Rhodamine B. Specially, Au nanoingots with the largest shell size exhibit the highest catalytic activity and Raman signals at 532 nm excitation. Abstract:Iron oxides are directly coated on the surface of cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-capped gold nanorods (AuNRs) in aqueous solutions at room temperature, which results in AuNR@Fe2O3, AuNR@Fe3O4, and AuNR@Fe2O3@Fe3O4 core-shell heterostructures. The iron oxide shells are uniform, smooth, with characteristic porous structure, and their thickness can be readily tuned. The shell formation is highly dependent on the reaction parameters including pH and CTAB concentration. The Fe2O3 shell is amorphous and exhibits nearly zero remanence and coercivity, while the Fe3O4 shell is ferromagnetic with a low saturation magnetization of about 0.5 emu g-1 due to its low crystallinity and the porous structure. At elevated temperatures achieved by plasmonic heating of the Au core, the Fe2O3 shell transforms from amorphous to γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3 phases, while the Fe3O4 phase disappears because of the oxidation of Fe2+. A 1.4-fold increase of photocatalytic performance is observed due to the plasmonic resonance provided by the Au core. The photocatalytic efficiency of Fe3O4 is about 1.7-fold higher than Fe2O3 as more surface defects are present on the Fe3O4 shell, promoting the adsorption and activation of reagents on the surface during the catalytic reactions. This approach can be readily extended to other nanostructures including Au spherical nanoparticles and nanostars. These highly uniform and multifunctional core-shell heterostructures can be of great potential in a variety of energy, magnetic, and environment applications.

Abstract:In wild‐type Salmonella, the length of the flagellar hook, a structure consisting of subunits of the hook protein FlgE, is fairly tightly controlled at ≈ 55 nm. Because fliK mutants produce abnormally elongated hook structures that lack the filament structure, FliK appears to be involved in both the termination of hook elongation and the initiation of filament formation. FliK, a soluble protein, is believed to function together with a membrane protein, FlhB, of the export apparatus to mediate the switching of export substrate specificity (from hook protein to flagellin) upon completion of hook assembly. We have examined the location of FliK during flagellar morphogenesis. FliK was found in the culture supernatants from the wild‐type strain and from flgD (hook capping protein), flgE (hook protein) and flgK (hook‐filament junction protein) mutants, but not in that from a flgB (rod protein) mutant. The amount of FliK in the culture supernatant from the flgE mutant was much higher than in that from the flgK mutant, indicating that FliK is most efficiently exported prior to the completion of hook assembly. Export was impaired by deletions within the N‐terminal region of FliK, but not by C‐terminal truncations. A decrease in the level of exported FliK resulted in elongated hook structures, sometimes with filaments attached. Our results suggest that the export of FliK during hook assembly is important for hook‐length control and the switching of export substrate specificity.

Abstract:Plasmonic multimetal materials, consisting of a plasmonic core and a catalytic shell in a core-shell structure, often exhibit excellent catalytic performances. Such excellent performances arise from the synergistic collaboration between the plasmonic core's localized surface plasmon-excited hot electrons and the catalytically active sites of the catalytic shell. In this context, a trimetallic nanostructure was designed featuring gold nanobipyramids (AuNBP) with a silver-platinum alloy shell, serving as a plasmon-mediated photocatalyst for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible and near-infrared light. By altering the concentrations of the surfactants hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), the resulting nanostructure can take on either island-like or shell-like morphology. In the model system of the photocatalytic reaction of MO, employing the synthesized nanoparticles as catalysts, the study investigated the reaction under xenon lamp illumination. The trimetallic nanostructure exhibited robust photocatalytic performances, surpassing AuNBP by a factor of 27.8. The transfer of plasmon resonance energy from AuNBP to the silver-platinum alloy layer, augmenting the generation of charge carriers, elucidates its outstanding photocatalytic performance. The obtained trimetallic nanostructure showcases promising potential applications in the realm of photocatalysis, contributing to the development of advanced plasmon-enhanced photocatalysts with enhanced efficiency and multifunctionality.
Surface-plasmon-enhanced ethanol electrocatalysis and enhancement mechanism of nanoporous AuPd with wide-spectrum response characteristics under visible light irradiation

Abstract:The plasmonic-enhanced catalytic activity and stability of the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) on plasmonic metal materials provides a promising strategy for direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). Most studies are aimed at performance, while only a few studies have provided in-depth discussion of the underlying enhancement mechanism. It is urgent to systematically and thoroughly study the plasmon-enhanced activity and stability of the EOR and the underlying enhancement mechanism. Herein, nanoporous (NP) AuPd was prepared by the dealloying of ternary Au 2.5 Pd 2.5 Ni 95 to thoroughly investigate the effect of visible light irradiation on catalytic performance towards the EOR. UV-vis reflectance spectroscopy indicated that NP AuPd exhibited wide-spectrum response characteristics in the waveband of 400–800 nm. The mass activity (8.5 A mg −1 Pd ) of NP AuPd under visible light irradiation of 400–800 nm was almost 1.46 times higher than that of NP AuPd without visible light irradiation (5.8 A mg −1 Pd ). The contributions of the solution temperature, photothermal effect, and photoelectric effect to the activity were 17%, 19%, and 10%, respectively. The long-term stability, charge-transfer rate and electrocatalytic kinetics, as well as the antipoisoning ability against CO species, of NP AuPd for the EOR were increased by visible light irradiation. 1 H NMR demonstrated that light irradiation can improve the efficiency of the EOR toward the C2 pathway. In situ -irradiated XPS and ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy confirmed hot electron transfer from Au to Pd. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that AuPd-excited would adsorb OH more easily and CO less readily, and would increase the reaction rate of the EOR via the C2 pathway due to the extra energy from the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Au under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:Atomically precise gold (Au) nanoclusters (NCs) as visible light photosensitizers supported on the substrate for photoredox catalysis have attracted considerable attentions. However, efficient control of their photocatalytic activity and long-term stability is still challenging. Herein, we report a coordination-assisted self-assembly strategy in combination with electrostatic interaction to sandwich Au25(Capt)18 (abbreviated as Au25, Capt = captopril) NCs between an inner core and an outer shell made of UiO-66, denoted as UiO-66@Au25@UiO-66. Notably, the sandwich-like nanocomposite displays significantly enhanced catalytic activity along with an excellent stability when used in the selective photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of sulfide to sulfoxide. As comparison, Au25 NCs simply located at the outer surface or insider matrix of UiO-66 (short as Au25/UiO-66 and Au25@UiO-66) show poor stability and low conversion, respectively. This structure regulated difference in the catalytic performances of three nanocomposites is assigned to the varied distribution of active sites (Au NCs) in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This work offers the opportunity for application of nanoclusters in catalysis, energy conversion and even biology.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have been widely applied in industrial catalysis and electrocatalysis. Owing to their wide variety of shapes, sizes, and compositions, a range of different catalytic properties is possible. Thus, it is important to monitor catalytic processes and their mechanisms on single GNP surfaces to avoid averaging effects in bulk systems. Therefore, a novel method based on dark-field scattering spectroscopy was developed to monitor, in real-time, the electrocatalytic oxidation of hydrogen peroxide on a single gold nanoparticle surface. The catalytic mechanism was revealed via the plasmon resonance scattering spectral shift of single gold nanorod with the elimination of bulk effect. Moreover, we found that the presence of chloride ions could block the catalytic activity of nanorods for the oxidation of H2O2. Most importantly, it was discovered that individual nanoparticles have variable properties with different spectra shifts during the catalytic process. The obtained optical signals from individual nanorods not only offer versatile information regarding the reaction but also improve the understanding of electrochemistry and the catalysis mechanism of single nanoparticles.

Abstract:Combining metal nanoparticles (NPs) featured with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) with metal–organic framework (MOF)‐based photocatalysts is a novel means for achieving efficient separation of electron–hole pairs. Herein, the Au@NH2‐UiO‐66/CdS composites are successfully synthesized by encapsulating Au NPs with LSPR into the NH2‐UiO‐66 nanocage, further growing CdS NPs on the surface of the NH2‐UiO‐66, which exhibits higher photocatalytic activity in hydrogen evolution reaction under visible‐light irradiation than that of NH2‐UiO‐66/CdS and CdS, respectively. Transient absorption measurements reveal that MOF is not only a transit station for electrons generated from CdS to Au, but also a receiver for hot electrons generated from plasmonic Au in Au@MOF/CdS composites. Thus, the LSPR‐induced hot electron transfer from Au NPs is an important manifestation to prolong the carrier lifetime and enhance the photocatalytic performance. This work provides insights into investigating the photoinduced carrier dynamics of nanomaterials with LSPR effects for enhancing the MOF‐based photocatalytic performance. The photoinduced carriers of Au@NH2‐UiO‐66/CdS with two routes (localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation and band edge excitation) are investigated using time‐resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. Under visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution acitivity of Au@NH2‐UiO‐66/CdS is higher than that of pristine CdS nanoparticles and NH2‐UiO‐66/CdS, respectively, due to the antenna effects of LSPR Au and the role of cocatalyst, indicating efficient charge separation.

Abstract:A facile microwave assisted strategy was used to synthesize a series of Pt–Au/graphene (simplified as Pt–Au/GNs) catalysts with controllable Pt:Au ratios, in which K2PtCl4, HAuCl4 and graphite oxide were synchronously reduced using ethanol as a reducing agent. When a lower amount of Au is added, Pt and Au species form the heterostructure in Pt-Au/GNs composites, while as Au content increases further, excess Au particles are easy to agglomerate. Electrochemical experiments show that Pt–Au/GNs composites with lower Au content exhibit advantageous electrocatalytic performances and stability simultaneously towards methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). What's interesting is that, under simulated sunlight irradiation, Pt-Au/GNs composites with higher Au content behave superior electro-photo catalytic activities towards MOR and ORR, which is proportional to the size and content of Au. Comprehensive consideration of catalytic performance and cost, Pt–Au/GNs with the optimal Pt: Au ratio of 1:0.1 can serve as an efficient bifunctional electro-photo catalyst for catalyzing MOR and ORR.

Abstract:The spherical Au@Pt core‐shell‐satellite nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated via a facile, efficient, and surfactant‐free method of seed‐mediated growth, and the electrocatalytic performance toward the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) was systematically researched by cyclic voltammetry. Compared with commercial Pt/C, all the obtained Au@Pt NPs with such a core‐shell‐satellite structure exhibit greatly enhanced electrocatalytic activity and long‐term stability toward MOR. Among them, Au90@Pt10 NPs with less loading of Pt exhibit the most significantly enhanced electrocatalytic performance with a mass activity of 1.470 A/mgPt, approximately 13 times that of commercial Pt/C (0.111 A/mgPt) and specific activity (1.469 mA/cm2) approximately 9 times that of commercial Pt/C (0.157 mA/cm2). Au95@Pt5 NPs have the highest value of the oxidation current density (0.2615 mA/cm2), corresponding to 62.8% of its initial maximum value (0.4165 mA/cm2), showing higher stability at approximately 4000 s. Such a surfactant‐free synthesis technique of Au@Pt bimetallic NPs may be a simple method to prepare self‐supported bimetallic nanostructures, which is important to develop highly effective electrocatalysts for MORs. Abstract:As an emerging field, plasmonic photocatalysis has gradually garnered attention from researchers. It is generally accepted that localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) in noble metallic nanostructures enhances photocatalysis through the induction of a long-range plasmonic field. Furthermore, nanostructures in close proximity can enhance the electromagnetic (EM) field via plasmonic coupling, which also contributes to improved photocatalytic activity. In this study, core-shell nanostructures composed of Au nanorods (AuNRs) with pinhole-free SiO 2 shells (pf-AuNRs@SiO 2 ) are synthesized as non-contact, long-range photocatalysts. By tuning the aspect ratios (ARs) of the AuNRs to match the LSPR peaks with the wavelength of the irradiation light source, an optimized photocatalytic effect was achieved in the reduction of p -nitrophenol ( p -NP). Additionally, by comparing shell thicknesses of 5 nm and 10 nm, it was observed that the 5 nm thickness exhibited superior catalytic efficiency. This enhancement is attributed to the thinner shell allowing reactants to be placed within a stronger plasmonic field.
