Abstract:Building Services Engineering Research and Technology, Ahead of Print. Previous studies have shown a strong relationship between heat-related fatalities and ambient air temperature. This problem is expected to increase due to constant urbanization and the threat of global warming. Therefore, designing urban street canyons (USC) to be thermally comfortable is essential for a healthy urban life. This paper investigates the correlation between an urban street canyon's aspect ratio and the albedo material of its surrounding buildings. The aim is to study which combination can successfully mitigate urban heat stress and create a thermally comfortable pedestrian microclimate. This research uses a comparative analysis that suggests the optimum albedo for different USC geometries. An ENVI-met model was used to simulate 9 scenarios for an idealized 2D USC with varying aspect ratios and albedo values. Air temperature, mean radiant temperature and Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) were analyzed. Results show that a medium albedo value performs best thermally in all USCs. High albedo had 13.2% more combined thermal stress compared to medium albedo. However, high albedo performed much better in deep canyons than wider ones, with the average UTCI decreasing by about 4.8%-5.7% when used in deep canyons. Medium albedo should be exclusively used in wide canyons for minimal thermal stress.Practical application: This study provides a reference to the use of materials in urban street canyons of different aspect ratios to achieve good outdoor thermal comfort for pedestrians.

Abstract:Walkability and livability in cities can be enhanced by creating comfortable environments in the streets. The profile of an urban street canyon has a substantial impact on outdoor thermal conditions at pedestrian level. This paper deals with the effect of asymmetrical street canyon profiles, common in the historical centre of Camagüey, Cuba, on outdoor thermal comfort. Temporal-spatial analyses are conducted using the Heliodon2 and the RayMan model, which enable the generation of accurate predictions about solar radiation and thermal conditions of urban spaces, respectively. On these models, urban settings are represented by asymmetrical street canyons with five different height-to-width ratios and four street axis orientations (N-S, NE-SW, E-W, SE-NW). Results are evaluated for daytime hours across the street canyon, by means of the physiologically equivalent temperature (PET index) which allows the evaluation of the bioclimatic conditions of outdoor environments. Our findings revealed that high profiles (façades) located on the east-facing side of N-S streets, on the southeast-facing side of NE-SW streets, on the south-facing side of E-W street, and on the southwest-facing side of SE-NW streets, are recommended to reduce the total number of hours under thermal stress. E-W street canyons are the most thermally stressed ones, with extreme PET values around 36 °C. Deviating from this orientation ameliorates the heat stress with reductions of up to 4 h in summer. For all analysed E-W orientations, only about one fifth of the street can be comfortable, especially for high aspect ratios (H/W > 3). Optimal subzones in the street are next to the north side of the E-W street, northwest side of the NE-SW street, and southwest side of the SE-NW street. Besides, when the highest profile is located on the east side of N-S streets, then the subzone next to the east-facing façade is recommendable for pedestrians. The proposed urban guidelines enable urban planners to create and renovate urban spaces which are more efficient in diminishing pedestrian thermal stress.

Evaluation Strategies on the Thermal Environmental Effectiveness of Street Canyon Clusters: A Case Study of Harbin, China

Abstract:Urban overheating significantly affects people's physical and mental health. The addition of street trees is an essential, economical, and effective means by which to mitigate urban heat and optimize the overall thermal environment. Focusing on typical street canyon clusters in Harbin, China, landscape morphology was quantified by streetscape interface measurements (sky view factor, tree view factor, and building view factor). Through ENVI-met simulations, the correlation mechanism between streetscape interface measurements and thermal environment was evaluated, and optimization methods for assessing the thermal environment of urban streets were proposed. The results revealed: (1) The thermal environment optimization efficiency of general street canyon types was greatest when street tree spacing was 12 meters. At present, the smaller spacing has not been simulated and may yield better thermal environment results. The average decrease in temperature (Ta), relative humidity (RH) and mean radiant temperature (MRT) was 0.78%, 2.23%, and 30.20%, respectively. (2) Specific street canyon types should adopt precise control strategies of streetscape interface according to their types to achieve the optimal balance between thermal environment optimization and cost. (3) Streetscape interface measurements and thermal environment indexes show quadratic correlation characteristics, and are critical points for further investigation. The conclusions are more specific than previous research findings, which are of great significance for decreasing the urban heat island effect at the block scale, improving residents' physical and mental health, and improving the urban environment quality.

Abstract:Climatic and micro-climatic phenomena such as summer heat waves and Urban Heat Island (UHI) are increasingly endangering the city's livability and safety. The importance of urban features on the UHI effect encourages us to consider the configuration of urban elements to improve cities' sustainability and livability. Most solutions are viable when a city redevelops and new areas are built to focus on aspects such as optimum design and the orientation of building masses and streets, which affect thermal comfort. This research looks beyond outdoor thermal comfort studies using UHI data and geoprocessing techniques in Tallinn, Estonia. This study supposes that designing urban canyons with proper orientation helps to mitigate the UHI effect by maximizing outdoor thermal comfort at the pedestrian level during hot summer days. In addition, optimizing the orientation of buildings makes it possible to create shaded and cooler areas for pedestrians, reducing surface temperature, which may create more comfortable and sustainable urban environments with lower energy demands and reduced heat-related health risks. This research aims to generate valuable insights into how urban environments can be designed and configured to improve sustainability, livability, and outdoor thermal comfort for pedestrians. According to the study results, researchers can identify the most effective interventions to achieve these objectives by leveraging UHI data and geoprocessing techniques and using CFD simulations. This evaluation is beneficial in guiding urban planners and architects in proposing mitigation solutions to enhance thermal comfort in cities and creating suitable conditions for approved thermal comfort levels. Results of the study show that in the location used for the survey, Tallinn, Estonia, the orientation of West-East offers the optimum level of comfort regarding thermal comfort and surface temperature in the urban environment.

Abstract:Global warming is a growing trend that challenges cities to adapt to future thermal conditions. Heat stress is one of the consequences that must be tackled through urban planning and architectural design by linking urban geometry and human biometeorology. The present research quantifies the effects of urban street configuration on human thermal comfort to formulate urban guidelines for city growth and protection of human life in the era of climate change. Meteorological data from a weather station (2010–2019) was used to assess thermal indices such as Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET) in open spaces and in various urban canyon configurations. A parametric study was conducted using the RayMan model in two urban development schemes: in-filling and sprawl. Simulations applied to the urban canyon addressed aspect ratio and orientation using temporal analyses. Findings reveal a similar pattern of thermal conditions in both schemes, except for sprawl with H/W = 2.5. In the summer months, the east-west axis displays the highest PET discomfort value, while the north-south axis offers the highest PET comfort value. The pattern showed that the lower the aspect ratio, the greater the heat stress in January, but performance was stable in July with aspect ratio ≥1.5.

Abstract:The present study investigated the cooling effect of extensive green roofs and green façades, at the pedestrian level, of a Mediterranean densely populated neighborhood. The ENVI-met environmental model was employed to simulate the microclimatic environment on a typical summer day. Thermal conditions of the study area were evaluated based on air temperature and the Mediterranean thermal stress scale of UTCI (Universal Thermal Climate Index). Three mitigation strategies were developed to ameliorate the thermal conditions in the examined area focusing on the efficacy of green façades, green roofs, and the synergetic effect of the green façade and green roof. The mitigation strategies' performance was evaluated in characteristic design layouts of the study area, namely the following: a typical Mediterranean square, a church with a churchyard, an avenue, NS and EW street orientations, and courtyards. Results showed that compared to the existing configuration, the synergetic effect of the green façade and green roof achieved the greatest amelioration of the thermal conditions during the hottest hours of the day (12:00–18:00) since it produced an average Tair reduction of up to 0.7 °C and a UTCI reduction of 1.6 °C (both in the courtyards design layout). Among the examined design layouts, the courtyards produced the greatest reductions in air temperature and UTCI, whereas the EW streets were the lowest.

Abstract:Increasing heat stress in urban environments due to climate change has a significant adverse impact on human work and daily life. Street canyons as the main component of the underlying surface of the city and the main place of residents' activities, a comprehensive understanding of street morphology and tree planting practices can help to improve thermal comfort. Based on survey data and field experiments, this study designed 30 scenarios and employed ENVI-met model (version 5.0.3) to quantify the effect of street aspect ratio (H/W: H is building height and W is street width) and tree spacing (TS) on pedestrian thermal comfort in two differently oriented streets (north-south and east-west) in Taiyuan, China. Results showed that H/W ratio and TS significantly influenced the street thermal comfort mainly owing to shading. H/W ratio played a pivotal role in reducing mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) and physiological equivalent temperature (PET), and was negatively correlated with Tmrt and PET. Compared to no-tree scenarios, street trees significantly improved thermal comfort (mean reductions of Tmrt and PET were 12.74℃ and 5.66℃, respectively), and PET and Tmrt were significantly negatively correlated with TS. The improvement effect of street trees on Tmrt and PET in east-west oriented street was better than north-south oriented street. H/W = 1.0 and TS = 6 m appeared as the proposed combination to mitigate the summer thermal comfort in the temperate monsoon climate zone. These quantitative results provide new insights into renewal and design strategies for future urban planning.

Abstract:Understanding the synergistic effect of multiple parameters is helpful to urban planners trying to design sustainable cities through a holistic approach. The objective of this research was to investigate how the street aspect ratio (HW), street orientation (AO), and greenery parameters, such as leaf area density (LAD) and aspect ratio of trees (ART), could affect the microclimate and outdoor thermal comfort of street canyons in a central business district under the local climate conditions of Chongqing city. To achieve this goal, a series of single- and multi-parameter simulations which followed an orthogonal design of experiments (ODOE) were conducted. The physiological equivalent temperature (PET) was adopted to assess the results of microclimate simulations for different urban models. The main findings are as follows: 1) The aspect ratio and orientation of urban canyons and ART play significant roles in influencing microclimate variables at the pedestrian level. 2) There is an inverse relationship between the street aspect ratio and T mrt , and likewise for ART; the highest wind velocity was obtained when the aspect ratio of canyons was 2 and 3, which consequently developed the channeling phenomenon (when the domain wind is prevailing with street direction). 3) The East–West streets and canyons with an HW = 0.5 incur the warmest thermal conditions and longest extreme discomfort durations. 4) Results for the PET and meteorological parameters exhibit less significant variation obtained from different values of LAD than those observed in the other three parameters.

Abstract:Urban environment characteristics directly affect local microclimate and, in turn, changes in local microclimate affect the urban environmental conditions, often resulting in negative consequences on human health and comfort. The study of these interactions is largely supported by scientific literature, but there is a general lack concerning the urban forms influence on outdoor thermal comfort in euro-Mediterranean cities.In this study, the topic is addressed by investigating performances and characteristics of typical Euro-Mediterranean housing blocks to highlight their effects on local microclimate. Its relevance is related to the need for supporting the assessment of microclimate conditions and outdoor thermal comfort, providing an effective tool that can steer future adaptation policies and design processes.In this perspective, a parametric study is performed by investigating different housing blocks through some morphometric descriptors (density, land-use, canyon geometry descriptors), commonly used in urban and environmental planning. Seven typologies (detached, attached, linear, U-shaped, block with courtyard, block with multiple courtyards, tower) are modelled with the Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) ENVI-met v4.4 model, considering three configurations of surface cover and wind direction. For each combination, air temperature at pedestrian level (TA,1.6m) and descriptors are compared to highlight the microclimate performances of urban forms.The results show a close relationship between density, geometry and TA,1.6m distribution, highlighting the perimeter type (which includes three block types: U-shaped, block with courtyard, block with multiple courtyards) as the optimal configuration. Moreover, in some cases, a reduced amount of vegetation can lead to a significant reduction in air temperature, with economic benefits in terms of cost reductions for implementation, management and maintenance.

Abstract:In this study, we apply the ENVI-met model to evaluate the effects of combinations of morphological and vegetation-related landscape features on urban temperatures and thermal comfort. We simulated the thermal conditions of 126 scenarios, varying the aspect ratios of street canyons, vegetation cover and density, surface materials, and orientations toward the prevalent winds under an extreme heat situation. Our results show how the effects of physical and vegetation parameters interact and moderate each other. We also demonstrate how sensitive thermal comfort indices such as temperature and relative humidity are to the built environment parameters during different hours of a day. This study’s findings highlight the necessity of prioritizing heat mitigation interventions based on the site’s physical characteristics and landscape features and avoiding generic strategies for all types of urban environments.

Abstract:Numerous studies have explored the impact of urban morphology and geometry on outdoor thermal comfort, intending to provide practical guidelines for urban designers. However, research findings have been inconsistent, in part due to differences in the climatic settings and the investigated heat-stress indicators. This study proposes a parametric-simulation framework to observe the behavior of thermal comfort according to the possible combinations of building density (BD), street aspect ratio (AR), and orientation. Conducted specifically under a hot-and-humid tropical-savanna summer condition, the study found that building density and aspect ratio were negatively correlated to the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), with R2 coefficients of 0.99 and 0.91, respectively. The UTCI was improved by a 1.0 °C per 10% increase in BD and by a 1.02 °C per unit of AR increase. The performance of street orientation was significantly influenced by wind direction, and strong inter-influences were found between the three morphology factors. These findings are useful guidelines not only for designing urban morphology but also for intuitively identifying the need for complementary vegetation and cooling materials when morphology indicators cannot reach their efficiency targets (e.g., when AR < 3.0 or building density is limited by local regulations and project specifications).

Effects of Street Geometry and Greening on Thermal Environment in Street Canyon in Summer

Abstract:In this paper,using the software of DUTE,the parameters of WBGT and UHI intensity in Guangzhou street canyon with hot and humid climate were simulated,and the influence factors were discussed,including the ratio of height to width,street orientation,asymmetry and greening.The results demonstrated that the thermal environment in narrow canyon was better than that in wide canyon,and S-N canyon was better than E-W canyon.Furthermore,there was a positive liner correlation between the proportion of trees in the canyon and the decrease of UHI intensity.In addition,asymmetry had little impact on diurnal thermal environment of the canyon.This paper was a preliminary and quantitative study,which could provide references for urban planning and street canyon design.

Abstract:The significant transformation of land use as a consequence of current population growth, together with global warming (atmospheric emissions and extreme weather events), is generating increases in ambient temperatures. This circumstance is affecting people’s quality of life, especially those considered more vulnerable or with fewer economic resources. Currently, 30% of the world’s population suffers climatic conditions of extreme heat, and forecasts indicate that in the next 20 years, this number will reach 74%. The present study analyzes the effectiveness of the main mitigation strategies for the surface urban heat island (SUHI) effect between the years 2002 and 2022 in the different local climate zones of the city of Granada (Spain). Using Landsat 5 and 8 images, the evolution experienced by the land surface temperature and the surface urban heat island was determined and connected to the following variables: normalized difference vegetation index, vegetal proportion, normalized difference building index, and albedo. Our results indicate that compact and industrial areas have higher temperatures and lower vegetation and albedo in contrast to open areas, which have lower temperatures and higher vegetation and albedo. The mitigation measures analyzed presented similar efficiencies, but a greater minimization of the SUHI was reported when vegetation was increased in open areas as opposed to in closed areas, where the increase in albedo was more effective. Our study will allow the implementation of more efficient measures based on the types of LCZs in cities.

Abstract:The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect represents a threat to the well-being of cities. Cities must adapt to this phenomenon, prioritizing the improvement of outdoor environment quality. Urban materials have a great impact on outdoor environment quality, energy demand, and citizens' well-being. Based on the literature, it can be stated that changing the albedo of on-site materials (pavements, facades) is a relevant strategy. The environmental impact of reflective materials from buildings to urban microclimate has been widely discussed in the literature. However, few publications assess the role of albedo in inner courtyards. This work uses simulation results to evaluate the impact of different surface albedo on the thermal performance and comfort of a courtyard in Seville. To do so, the simulation tool ENVI-met, one of the most widely used for outdoor spaces, is validated through a comparison with monitoring results. In conclusion, high reflectance compromises user comfort up to 5 °C of PET despite the fact that the use of high albedo on surfaces reduces surface temperature up to 25 °C in comparison with low albedo as it accumulates less heat by reflecting more solar radiation. Some of the recommendations given include the use of medium albedo (around 0.4) on walls to balance positive and negative effects, and high albedo on the pavements (above 0.7).

Summer Thermal Conditions in Outdoor Public Spaces: A Case Study in a Mediterranean Climate

Abstract:Comfort in public spaces is essential to their attractiveness and continued role in improving human quality of life. Acceptable thermal conditions are determinant to ensuring users’ comfort. This study undertakes an assessment of three urban sites in Arouca, in the north of Portugal, using ENVI-met software. Simulations test the influence of pavement and facade covering material, vegetation, and site morphology. The climate of the region is classified as Mediterranean Csb, with rainy winters and dry and mildly warm summers. A typical summer day is considered. The results reveal that a combination of factors might lead to thermal discomfort even in this mild climate on an average day, mainly due to heat exchange by radiation. In addition, the impact of alterations to surface properties depends on the morphological characteristics of the site, e.g., high albedo of the pavement may lead to a decrease or an increase in mean radiant temperature, depending on the space. This variability is present in the effects observed at the studied sites. A high facade albedo always contributes, in these cases, to thermal discomfort. The conclusions of the present study highlight the importance of performing a specific study for each urban site whenever an intervention is to be planned.

Abstract:Urban heat island effects and climate change are climatic phenomena responsible for periods of extreme heat in summer which severely impact citizens' well-being and health. In this alarming context which questions the livability of our cities, Nature-Based Solutions (NBSs) are considered an unavoidable component of the complex strategy in diminishing urban temperatures. The present work aims to show the relevance of NBSs in urban temperature regulation through the estimation of their potential to improve outdoor thermal comfort of the heritage site Matadero Madrid. To this end, this article evaluates the effects of a scenario combining different solutions including NBSs and identifies which solutions are the most effective. The results show that this scenario has an impact on direct solar radiation and wind speed but does not affect air temperature and relative humidity. Furthermore, even if this scenario combining a fabric canopy, tree canopy, and green area significantly improves thermal conditions, it does not allow us to reach an optimal level of thermal comfort for visitors. To consider the implementation of more meaningful interventions, existing legal, administrative, and cultural limitations of the case study should be omitted. This would enable us to identify which restrictions could be adapted, thus unlocking the adaptation potential of Matadero Madrid.

Abstract:The urban heat island and the urban air pollution concentration are two major climate-change-related phenomena affecting the built environment worldwide. This paper aims to verify the potential effect of different mitigation measures through a simulation study. In detail the present study focuses on the analysis of the environmental impacts of urban vegetation, such as green facades, vertical greenery, and green pavements. After an extensive screening of the literature review, an investigation of the impact of the most common built environment design variables in a defined case study led to the definition of a typical urban canyon was tested. The results show that the presence of trees in a street canyon could reduce the air temperature peaks by 5-10 °C, while the high-level vegetation canopies can lead to a deterioration in air quality with a PM concentration increasing by 1.2-1.5%. Instead, using low-level green infrastructure improves the air quality conditions on the sidewalk, reducing the NOx in the range of 10-20%. The analyzed high-level greenery generated an air temperature reduction effect on a street level ranging from 8 to 12°C. The present work contributes to clarifying the potential mitigation effect of green infrastructure in a densely built environment, where the risk of increasing temperatures and air pollutants is foreseen to be more intense in the coming years.
Effect of Street Asymmetry, Albedo, and Shading on Pedestrian Outdoor Thermal Comfort in Hot Desert Climates

Abstract:Improving urban walkability in the face of climate change is a critical challenge for urban designers. Street design strategies can mitigate heat stress and enhance pedestrian livability. Most previous studies conducted in hot climates recommend adopting deep canyons to improve summer conditions, overlooking the potential improvement of wide streets as essential structural elements of the urban fabric. This study was conducted in Biskra city, southern Algeria, where several mitigation strategies were applied to 'Emir Abdelkader Boulevard', as the main structural street inside the city, to create an optimal street model for arid climates. Five scenarios were developed based on three criteria: (Sc1) asymmetric profile northeast side (NES) > southwest side (SWS); (Sc2) asymmetric profile SWS > NES; (Sc3) cool paving; (Sc4) horizontal shading; and(Sc5) shading with a linear tree arrangement. ENVI-met software version 5.1.1 and the RayMan model were used to estimate the local climate conditions and outdoor thermal comfort levels based on the physiological equivalent temperature (PET). All scenarios reduced PET values across the street, with optimal reductions of −2.0 °C, −3.1 °C, −1.3 °C, −1.7 °C, and −1.2 °C in Sc1, Sc2, Sc3, Sc4, and Sc5, respectively. Concerning pedestrian areas, the optimal results durations were at the southwest side below the arcades' sidewalks during peak hours: Sc2, Sc3, Sc4, Sc5 (2.2 °C–3 H, 2.3 °C–3 H, 2.4 °C–3 H, 2.5 °C–2 H). Sc1 performed best during daytime hours on the northeast side. The utilizing of these results can strongly help urban planners and landscape architects in creating climate-responsive streets that enhance citizens' quality of life.

Abstract:Changes in urban geometry significantly alters the urban microclimate. Suitable urban geometrical layouts can effectively improve the urban thermal environment to achieve a more sustainable and healthier city. A quantitative assessment of the relationship between the urban geometry and thermal environment is essential to provide scientific guidance for better urban and building design. Hence, we performed a scaled outdoor measurement to investigate the diurnal variations in air, and west and east wall temperatures within two-dimensional (2D) street canyons. We adopted the daily average temperature T ‾ , daily temperature range DTR, and hottest time t m a x to describe the diurnal temperature characteristics. The influence of aspect ratios was considered (building height/street width, H/W = 0.5, H = 0.5 m, and H/W = 1, 2, 3, 6, H = 1.2 m). Canyon air experienced a smaller T ‾ and DTR compared with the east and west walls. With an increase in the aspect ratio, no significant difference was observed in the T ‾ of canyon air. The east and west walls of H/W = 2, 3, and 6 experienced lower T ‾ (26.1–26.9 °C ) and smaller DTR (11.7–18.4 °C ) than those of H/W = 0.5, 1 ( T ‾ =26.7–28.7 °C and DTR = 16.0–26.1 °C ). A higher phase lag of t m a x occurred between H/W = 0.5, and H/W = 6. As the aspect ratio increased, the differences in T ‾ , DTR, and t m a x between the east and west walls decreased. This study improves our understanding of how urban morphology influences urban thermal environment and provides meaningful references for urban planning. Such high-quality experimental data can be used to validate and further improve numerical simulations and theoretical models.

Abstract:With an increasing awareness of urban health and well-being, this study highlights the growing importance of considering environmental quality in urban design beyond mere energy performance. This study integrates outdoor and indoor quality by investigating the effect of design parameters at an urban block scale (building form restricted to width and length as rectangular and square, building orientation, block orientation, building combination, building height, facade length, built-up percentage, setbacks, and canyon aspect ratio) on outdoor thermal comfort and energy use intensity. In addition, it explains the different correlations between outdoor thermal comfort and energy use intensity in different urban block designs in a hot-summer Mediterranean climate in Jordan. The study adopts a performance-driven approach using simulation tools of Ladybug, Honeybee, Dragonfly, and Eddy3d plugins across the grasshopper interface and evaluates 59 different urban block designs with nine different orientations (0°, 1°, 45°, 85°, 87°, 90°, 355°, 358°, and 359°). The results show that there is a positive correlation between the canyon aspect ratio and the environmental performance of the urban block designs. North–south street canyons are more effective at enhancing microclimates. Negatively increasing the street aspect ratio by more than four affected outdoor thermal comfort by increasing longwave radiation. Further results suggest a positive correlation between the compactness of urban blocks and their environmental performance, with north–south street canyons found to be more effective in enhancing microclimates. The study emphasizes the need to understand the distribution of open spaces formed by buildings and to strike a balance between day and night, as well as summer and winter conditions in outdoor spaces.
