Abstract:Cold seeps with methane-rich fluids leaking out of the seafloor usually support massive biomass of chemosynthetic organisms and associated fauna. A substantial amount of methane is converted to dissolved inorganic carbon by microbial metabolism, and this process also releases dissolved organic matter (DOM) into pore water. Here, pore water samples from "Haima cold seeps" sediments and the non-seep reference sediments in the northern South China Sea were analyzed for optical properties and molecular compositions of pore water DOM. Our results showed that the relative abundance of protein-like DOM, H/Cwa and molecular lability boundary percentage (MLBL%) in the seep sediments were significantly higher than those in the reference sediments, indicating that more labile DOM related to unsaturated aliphatic compounds is produced in the seep sediments. Spearman's correlation of the fluoresce and molecular data suggested that the humic-like components (C1 and C2) mainly constituted the refractory compounds (CRAM, highly unsaturated and aromatics compounds). In contrast, the protein-like component (C3) had high H/C ratios featuring high degree of DOM lability. The amount of S-containing formulas (CHOS and CHONS) was greatly elevated in the seep sediments, likely caused by abiotic and biotic sulfurization of DOM in the sulfidic environment. Although the abiotic sulfurization was proposed to have a stabilizing effect on organic matter, our results implied that the biotic sulfurization in the cold seep sediments would increase DOM lability. Overall, the labile DOM accumulated in the seep sediments is closely linked to methane oxidation, which not only support heterotrophic communities and but also likely have an impact on carbon and sulfur cycling in the sediments and the ocean.
Characteristics of Authigenic Minerals around the Sulfate-Methane Transition Zone in the Methane-Rich Sediments of the Northern South China Sea: Inorganic Geochemical Evidence

Abstract:Sediments at marine cold seep areas provide potential archives of past fluid flow, which allow insights into the evolution of past methane seepage activities. However, signals for anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) might be obscured in bulk sediments in cold-seep settings due to several factors, especially flood and turbidite deposition. Comprehensive inorganic data were gathered in this study to explore the availability of related records at cold seeps and to provide insights into the evolution of past methane seepage activities. Sediments collected from the site 973-4 in the Taixinan Basin on the northern slope of the South China Sea were characterized in terms of total carbon and sulfur, δ13C values of total organic carbon (δ13CTIC), δ34S values of chromium reducible sulfur (δ34SCRS), and foraminiferal oxygen and carbon isotopes. The results confirmed a strong correlation between formation of authigenic minerals and AOM. Moreover, the 34S enrichments and abundant chromium reducible sulfur (CRS) contents in the authigenic sulfides in the sulfate–methane transition zone (SMTZ) within 619–900 cm below seafloor (cmbsf) reflected past high methane fluxes supported by constant methane seepages. Lithological distribution and AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectra) 14C dating of planktonic foraminifera show that the turbidite (~35.14 ka) was related to a foraminifera-rich interval (Unit II: 440-619 cmbsf) and increased carbonate productivity during the last glacial maximum (LGM). Enrichment of Mo and U was observed accompanied by low contents of nutrient metals (Al, Ti, V, Ni, Fe, Mn, and Cu) in Unit II. The foraminifera-rich interval (Unit II) of cold seep sediments was probably linked to the phenomenon of inconsecutive sedimentary sequence due to the turbidites, which resulted in the lack of Fe, Mn, and Ba enrichment. There is no U enrichment but only Mo enrichment within Unit III, which might be related to H2S produced by AOM during the methane seepages. Based on the above results, it can be speculated that this area has experienced multiple-episodes of methane seep events. Further exploration of AOM should focus on the risks of rapid deposition, especially the impact of turbidity current on sediments.

Abstract:Subsurface shallow gas, primarily composed of biogenic methane (>95%), is highly-enriched in global offshore sediments. The redox conditions of methane-rich pore fluid play a crucial role in shaping the geochemical signatures associated with the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and vertical displacement of sulfate-methane transition zones (SMTZs) within deep sedimentary records. However, long-period, and continuous records of AOM and SMTZs in shallow gas-bearing offshore sediments are sparse. Here, we employed a comprehensive analyses of iron sulfide, elemental, and stable isotopies on a 63-m drilled sediment core (JC-1) from offshore Zhoushan. Four different layers U1−U4 were identified in 11.5−24 mbsf, 24−42 mbsf, 42−51 mbsf, and 51−63 mbsf, respectively, as revealed by the lithofacies and sedimentary structures. By comparing the pyrite contents, total sulfur to total organic carbon ratios, and δ 34 S-chromium-reducible sulfur values, the commonly seen organoclastic sulfate reduction occurred in U1 and U2, whereas significant AOM activities were found in U1 and U4. Further, the peaks of total sulfur to total organic carbon ratios, sulfur contents, and multiple positive δ 34 S-chromium-reducible sulfur values indicated the presence of AOM in SMTZs at 18.3, 52, and 59 mbsf. These intervals were featured by a sub-oxic or anoxic condition with strong methane seepages, evident from the scarcity of metals and the enrichment of Mo/Al and U/Al ratios. The presence of multiple SMTZs was consistent with the pore-water data of the adjacent YS4 and YS7 cores. In light of these findings, it is prudent to exercise caution when utilizing geochemical indicators, such as trace element proxies and the δ 34 S values of sulfide minerals, to comprehend the progression of fluctuating depositional settings in reaction to sea-level fluctuations and shallow gas reservoirs. This study provides a new perspective to better understand the evolution of unsteady depositional environments in response to sea-level changes and shallow gas reservoirs.

Abstract:Coastal systems are particularly sensitive to climate divers such as sea-level rise and environmental evolution, playing important roles in greenhouse gas sink and carbon sequestration. Despite the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) consumes 90% of global methane (CH4) produced by marine sediments, and AOM rates are also considerable in freshwater environments, most attention was paid to AOM in surface sediments, and little work has addressed the potential occurrence of AOM from coastal systems in the geological past and its interaction with climate change. A 60-m-long sediment core was investigated at the Qiantang River (QR) mouth, eastern China. The QR incised valley underlies the main part of the modern QR estuary, its sediment fill recorded the complete postglacial transgressive-regressive cycle in response to Holocene sea-level rise. Combining sedimentary Fe and P speciation with the distribution of vivianite and 34S-enriched pyrite, the sulfate-driven AOM (SD-AOM) was proved to occur at the depth interval of 38.8-39.6 m, a transition zone between two stratigraphic units (paleo-estuarine and offshore shallow marine). The intense and sustained SD-AOM is likely triggered by the rapid sea-level jump and plays a critical role in CH4 and P sink, which gives us a new perspective on understanding the elemental cycling and climate change in coastal systems in the past.

Abstract:At cold seeps, sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (SD-AOM) is the dominant biogeochemical process, which can significantly affect the marine carbon-sulfur cycle. In this paper, multiple sedimentary indicators in core QS-1 were reported for methane seepage from Haima seep of the South China Sea (SCS). By combining total carbon (TC), total organic carbon (TOC), total sulfur (TS), total inorganic carbon (TIC), as well as the carbon and oxygen isotope compositions of benthic foraminifera Uvigerina spp. In sediments, our aim was to explore the geochemical evidence on methane seepage activities in this area. We identified three methane release events (MREs) with different intensities and timescales during MIS 1–2, characterized by particular anomalies of negative δ 13 C TIC (as low as −41.42‰) and δ 13 C U.spp (as low as −5.50‰), high contents of TS and high S/C ratios, simultaneously. High S/C ratios and negative values of δ 13 C TIC effectively indicate the intense SD-AOM and SD-AOM-related process in core QS-1. Three MREs, occurred at high or low sea level, may due to the climate-driven increase of hydrostatic pressure and seafloor temperature. The insights for sediment carbon-sulfur trace element, carbon isotopes of TIC contents and benthic foraminifera have obvious implications for tracing past methane seepages and its possible link with climate changes.

Abstract:Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is one of the most important biogeochemical processes associated with hydrate dissociation and carbon cycling. Though AOM has been extensively investigated, the variations of its microorganisms and lipid biomarkers are still not fully understood. In this study, the porewater geochemical and lipid biomarker evidence for AOM was systematically investigated in the hydrate-bearing system from the Taixinan Basin, the South China Sea, aiming to better expound the vertical variations of AOM-related biomarker signatures and causes of the weak lipid biomarker patterns. Accordingly, the sulfate-methane interface (SMI) depth of 1,000 cmbsf and onset of AOM were determined on the basis of the vertical profiles of porewater parameters. The occurrence of 13C-depleted 2,6,10,15,19-pentamethylicosane (PMI) with the δ13C ratios of −77.7‰ to −131.4‰ near the SMI are in accord with the porewater parameters, despite the absence of archaeol and sn2-hydroxyarchaeol and low abundances of PMI. Meanwhile, the strongly 13C-enriched iso-C15:0 and anteiso-C15:0 fatty acids suggest that non-methane hydrocarbons or oil derivatives are speculated as the probable carbon sources for sulfate-reducing bacteria due to the presence of unresolved complex mixtures (UCMs) and odd-even predominance (OEP) values (about 1.0). The weak in situ signal of AOM-related biomarkers may be attributed to the low-flux methane supply, and dilution effect from the high input of allochthonous and autochthonous organic matters. The great difference in biomarkers between the Taixinan Basin and previously reported sites should be further clarified on the basis of more extensive studies in various AOM-related settings.

Environmental Controls on Sulfur Isotopic Compositions of Sulfide Minerals in Seep Carbonates from the South China Sea

Abstract:Authigenic carbonates and pyrite associated with sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) at methane seeps provide archives to explore the biogeochemical processes involved and seepage dynamics over time. The wide range and extremely high delta S-34 values of pyrite (delta S-34(py)) have been used to trace the AOM-related processes. However, the detailed mechanism for this phenomenon is not well understood. We propose that the characteristics of delta S-34(py) were mainly controlled by the competition between sulfate reduction and sulfate supply, as well as the redox condition. To test this hypothesis, we investigated Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios, trace element compositions, pyrite contents and sulfur isotopic compositions in seep carbonates from Site F and Haima in the northern South China Sea. Calcite and aragonite contents were distinguished through the Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios. The data show that aragonites are always associated with relatively low delta S-34(py) values compared to calcites. The Mo contents show a good correlation with pyrite contents in calcites and aragonites, and the slope in aragonites is larger than that in calcites. This relationship indicates that the aragonite precipitated in a relatively open system with higher Mo availability. Thus, we conclude that sulfides with low delta S-34 values formed at high supply of sulfate under the relatively open system with respect to diffusive replenishment of sulfate, where the carbonate precipitation occurred close to the seafloor due to a strong methane flux. Under vigorous methane flux simultaneously, the high potential of less anoxic conditions, which could limit the additional pyrite accumulation and/or favor the microbial disproportionation, could also be the cause of the low delta S-34(py), as supported by samples from the Haima sites. Evidence for this assumption is based on the occurrence of bivalve shells and less enrichment in As and Sb. Conversely, the positive delta S-34(py) values result from near to complete exhaustion of dissolve sulfate via AOM within a deeper sulfate-methane transition zone, where Mo is less available. The combination of a detailed elemental study of authigenic carbonates with sulfur isotopic composition of sulfide minerals in carbonates is a promising tool for reconstructing the dynamics of seep intensities at modern and, potentially, geological seep sites.
Spatial-temporal pattern of sulfate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation in an intertidal zone of the East China Sea.

Abstract:Methane is a primary greenhouse gas which is responsible for global warming. The sulfate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (S-AOM) process catalyzed by anaerobic methanotrophic (ANME) archaea and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is a vital link connecting the global carbon and sulfur cycles, and it is considered to be the overriding methane sink in marine ecosystem. However, there have been few studies regarding the role of S-AOM process and the distribution of ANME archaea in intertidal ecosystem. The intertidal zone is a buffer zone between sea and land and plays an important role in global geochemical cycle. In the present study, the abundance, potential methane oxidation rate, and community structure of ANME archaea in the intertidal zone were studied by quantitative PCR, stable isotope tracing method and high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the potential S-AOM activity ranged from 0 to 0.77 nmol (13)CO(2)g(-1) (dry sediment) day (-1) . The copy number of 16S rRNA gene of ANME archaea reached 10(6) similar to 10(7) copies g(-1) (dry sediment). The average contribution of S-AOM to total anaerobic methane oxidation was up to 34.5%, while denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation accounted for the rest, which implied that S-AOM process was an essential methane sink that cannot be overlooked in intertidal ecosystem. The simulated column experiments also indicated that ANME archaea were sensitive to oxygen and preferred anaerobic environmental conditions. This study will help us gain a better understanding of the global carbon-sulfur cycle and greenhouse gas emission reduction and introduce a new perspective into the enrichment of ANME archaea. Sulfur and Oxygen Isotope Records of Sulfate-Driven Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane in Diffusion-Dominated Marine Sediments

Abstract:Organoclastic sulfate reduction (OSR) and sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (SD-AOM) are the two major microbial pathways for sulfate consumption in marine sulfur cycle. The relative changes of sulfur and oxygen isotope ratios in pore water sulfate are affected by the mode of microbial sulfate reduction and have been applied as an indicator for assessing methane excess environments. However, so far, this isotope proxy fails to distinguish sulfate reduction processes fueled by the oxidation of organic matter or by diffusing methane. To better understand the mechanism of sulfur and oxygen isotope partitioning during OSR and SD-AOM, coupled sulfur and oxygen isotopic compositions of pore water sulfate (δ 34 S SO4 and δ 18 O SO4 ) were investigated from four methane diffusing sites (CL56, CL57, CL59, and CL60) of the South China Sea, supplemented by carbon isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and sulfur isotopic composition of pyrite in bulk sediments. Pore water sulfate and DIC concentrations, as well as calculated net sulfate reduction rates suggest that the sulfate reduction at site CL57 was mainly dominated by OSR, whereas sites CL56, CL59, and CL60 were likely impacted by both OSR and SD-AOM. Furthermore, the trend of cross-plotting δ 18 O SO4 versus δ 34 S SO4 values from site CL57 was distinguishable from sites CL56, CL59, and CL60, although all study sites show similar patterns to those derived from methane limited environments. This further indicates the trajectory of sulfur and oxygen isotope partitioning was affected by the mode of sulfate reduction (i.e., OSR vs. SD-AOM). At site CL57, the low net sulfate reduction rate would lead to enhanced oxidation of intermediate sulfur species during OSR, thus leading to a higher slope in the δ 18 O SO4 vs. δ 34 S SO4 cross-plot (1.26). In contrast, the higher net sulfate reduction rates at sites CL56, CL59, and CL60 due to the impact from SD-AOM would lead to lower slopes in the δ 18 O SO4 vs. δ 34 S SO4 cross-plots (0.78 ± 0.11). This study provides new insights into the sulfur and oxygen isotope systematics during microbial sulfate reduction processes in methane diffusing environments.

Abstract:Seepage of methane-rich fluids, are widespread along the continental margins of the world. Intense seepages of methane may lead to the emission of this powerful greenhouse gas into the hydrosphere and atmosphere with implications in the understanding of past dramatic marine environment changes and global warming. However, euxinic environments with sulfidic bottom water as a result of vigorous seepages at ancient cold seeps remain unidentified. Here we report trace element geochemistry and associated mineralogical and carbon and oxygen isotopic data in seep carbonates collected from long drill cores in the South China Sea. Three distinct stages of methane seepages events probably caused by the dissociation of gas hydrates are discernible. Carbonates formed in stage 2 during the Marine Isotope Stage 5 (MIS5) are mainly occurred as aragonite and show extremely high molybdenum (Mo) contents (up to 118 μg/g), and strong enrichments of authigenic Mo in relative to uranium. These results suggest the presence of intermittent or even permanent euxinic conditions generated by sulfidic bottom water that result from intensive methane seepages. In contrast, mineral compositions and trace element patterns indicate that the carbonates before and after the MIS 5 (stages 1 and 3) form within sulfidic conditions restricted to pore water under relatively lower methane fluxes. Our results highlight extremely intense methane seepages that may potentially result in localized euxinic environments. The inferred euxinic environments imply more amount of massive methane release into the water column than a previous estimation, which was triggered by large-scale dissociation of gas hydrates in the South China Sea during MIS 5.

Biogeochemical processes in continental slope sediments of the Dongsha Area, South China Sea

Abstract:Serving as an indicator or fluid seepage from seabed sediments, cold seeps are ubiquitous along continental margins worldwide. In this study, a 14 m long sediment core (# 973-4) from the Dongsha Area on the northern continental slope of the South China Sea, was investigated to trace the cold seep activity and sedimentary paleo-environmental changes and its consequence for sediment mineralogy, contents of major and trace elements, total organic and inorganic carbon and total TRIS (total reducible inorganic sulfur) and &#948;34S of sulfide minerals. In addition, planktonic foraminifera were selected for accelerator mass spectrometer carbon 14 (AMS14C) dating [1]. Furthermore, we identified the strength and effects of cold seep activity and its impact on the underlying seawater redox condition, and finally elucidated the derived force and paleoenvironment constraints of cold seep activity. C-S-Fe geochemistry, &#948;34S of sulfide minerals and major and trace elements suggest that anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) occurred at 619-900 cmbsf (centimeters below seafloor). The 34S enrichments (up to 23.6 &#8240;), abundant TRIS contents, high S/C ratios close to the seawater, together with high enrichments of Mo indicate temporal sulfidic methane seep events. Lithological distribution and AMS14C dating of planktonic foraminifera show that a turbidite (~35ka) is related to a foram-rich interval (440-619 cm) and increased carbonate productivity during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). An enrichment of Mo and U was observed accompanied by low contents of other trace and major (Al, Ti, V, Ni, Fe, Mn and Cu) in this interval. The foram-rich interval of cold seep sediments was probably linked to the phenomenon of inconsecutive sedimentary sequence due to the turbidites, which resulted in the lack of Fe, Mn and Ba. Based on the new results, it can be speculated that this area has experienced several episodes of methane seep activity and aerobic oxidation occurring alternatively in the last glacial period which may have been caused by fluctuating non-steady conditions. This study reports grain size, major/trace elements, total nitrogen (TN), total carbon (TC), total organic carbon (TOC), total sulfur (TS), magnetic susceptibility and AMS-14C measurements for sediment samples in a drill core (~282 cm long; Site Q6 at ~1400 m water depth) from the 'Haima seep' sedimentary area in the Qiongdongnan Basin, along the northern slope of the South China Sea (SCS). The alternative index system for paleo-methane seepage identification was established through testing and analysis, and three methane release events (MREs) were successfully identified: 254–282 cm (MRE1: 19.3–17.8 ka), 144–162 cm (MRE2: 11. 9–10.8 ka) and 90–124 cm (MRE3: 10.0–8.5 ka). When methane seepage occurred, the enrichment of authigenic carbonate minerals (high Mg-calcite or aragonite) led to the increase in the content of CaO and 'dilution' in the total rare earth element content (∑REE). However, the occurrence of authigenic pyrite resulted in a significant increase in TS and the total sulfur/total organic carbon ratio (S/C) in the sediments, and a synchronous decrease in the magnetic susceptibility. Meanwhile, the change of redox environment also induced the enrichment of Mo, U, and the positive anomaly of δCe. Based on the records of methane release events, the control mechanisms for the different time scales and different periods, such as sea level change, sea floor temperature change, and turbidity current activity were preliminarily discussed. Finally, the history of methane seepage activity was reconstructed, and conceptual diagrams were drawn of the study area encompassing the last 20 ka.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is an important nutrient and has an important impact on global primary productivity. Presently, the dynamics of the P cycle in low sulfate, anoxic settings are largely unknown. In this study, the adsorption–desorption behavior of Fe-bound P, organic-P, loosely-bund P, detrital apatite P, and refractory P was described in the sulfate and methane transition zone (SMTZ) at site 973–4 in the cold-seep area of the Taixinan Basin, South China Sea. Results showed that the Fe-bound P and organic-P were influenced by sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (SD-AOM) and metal-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (MD-AOM), and subsequently, the Fe-bound P and organic-P were released as HPO42− into the pore water. Meanwhile, significant increases were detected in authigenic carbonate fluorapatite (PCFA) and vivianite within the MD-AOM zone, which indicate that this zone is an important P-sink area. The MD-AOM plays an important role in the formation of PCFA and vivianite because MD-AOM provide the necessary HPO42− and Fe2+ for the formation of these minerals. Our findings have major implications for understanding the P cycle in low sulfate, anoxic settings and are important for understanding the influence of MD-AOM on the phosphate cycle.

Methane seepage intensities traced by sulfur isotopes of pyrite and gypsum in sediment from the Shenhu area, South China Sea

Abstract:The northern slope of the South China Sea is a gas-hydrate-bearing region related to a high deposition rate of organic-rich sediments co-occurring with intense methanogenesis in subseafloor environments. Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) coupled with bacterial sulfate reduction results in the precipitation of solid phase minerals in seepage sediment, including pyrite and gypsum. Abundant aggregates of pyrites and gypsums are observed between the depth of 667 and 850 cm below the seafloor (cmbsf) in the entire core sediment of HS328 from the northern South China Sea. Most pyrites are tubes consisting of framboidal cores and outer crusts. Gypsum aggregates occur as rosettes and spheroids consisting of plates. Some of them grow over pyrite, indicating that gypsum precipitation postdates pyrite formation. The sulfur isotopic values (δ34S) of pyrite vary greatly (from–46.6‰ to–12.3‰ V-CDT) and increase with depth. Thus, the pyrite in the shallow sediments resulted from organoclastic sulfate reduction (OSR) and is influenced by AOM with depth. The relative high abundance and δ34S values of pyrite in sediments at depths from 580 to 810 cmbsf indicate that this interval is the location of a paleo-sulfate methane transition zone (SMTZ). The sulfur isotopic composition of gypsum (from–25‰ to–20.7‰) is much lower than that of the seawater sulfate, indicating the existence of a 34S-depletion source of sulfur species that most likely are products of the oxidation of pyrites formed in OSR. Pyrite oxidation is controlled by ambient electron acceptors such as MnO2, iron (III) and oxygen driven by the SMTZ location shift to great depths. The δ34S values of gypsum at greater depth are lower than those of the associated pyrite, revealing downward diffusion of 34S-depleted sulfate from the mixture of oxidation of pyrite derived by OSR and the seawater sulfate. These sulfates also lead to an increase of calcium ions from the dissolution of calcium carbonate mineral, which will be favor to the formation of gypsum. Overall, the mineralogy and sulfur isotopic composition of the pyrite and gypsum suggest variable redox conditions caused by reduced seepage intensities, and the pyrite and gypsum can be a recorder of the intensity evolution of methane seepage.

Abstract:Authigenic carbonates were recovered from several locations of the South China Sea continental slope at a 470m to 770m water depth. The sources of seeping fluids, the time involved in carbonate formation and the potential driving forces are increasingly understood, but little is known about the biogeochemical processes that occur during this type of carbonate precipitation. Here, a molecular and isotopic investigation of authigenic carbonates was conducted to determine the factors controlling the types of microbial consortia in cold-seep environments. The studied carbonates were one aragonitic crust and three high-Mg calcitic tubular concretions from specific sites. A significant input of biogenic methane to the carbon pool during the precipitation of the carbonates was suggested by the presence of 13C-depleted molecular fossils of methanotrophic archaea (with δ13C values as negative at −141.5‰) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (with δ13C values as negative at −128.5‰). The methane was primarily oxidized in an anaerobic process. The predominant consortia were ANME-2 assemblages in the aragonitic carbonate (sample TVG3-C2), whereas high-Mg calcitic carbonates (samples TVG14-C2 and TVG8-C5) were dominated by ANME-1 assemblages according to the specific biomarkers observed. Taking the favored environments for specific AOM consortia and crystallization conditions for aragonite and calcite together, the factors selecting for specific AOM communities appear to be constrained by their biogeochemical settings. Accordingly, higher alkalinity, abundant sulfate concentration and being closer to the water–sediment interface conditions favor the precipitation of aragonite over high-Mg calcite.

Abstract:Microbial iron (Fe) reduction by naturally abundant iron minerals has been observed in many anoxic aquatic sediments in the sulfidic and methanic zones, deeper than it is expected based on its energetic yield. However, the potential consequence of this "deep" iron reduction on microbial elemental cycles is still unclear in sediments where diffusion is the dominant transport process. In this contribution, we experimentally quantify the impact of iron oxides on sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (S-AOM) within the sulfate methane transition zone (SMTZ) of marine diffusive controlled sediments. Sediments were collected from the oligotrophic Southeastern (SE) Mediterranean continental shelf and were incubated with 13 C-labeled methane. We followed the conversion of 13 C-labeled methane as a proxy of S-AOM and monitored the sediment response to hematite addition. Our study shows microbial hematite reduction as a significant process in the SMTZ, which appears to be co-occurring with S-AOM. Based on combined evidence from sulfur and carbon isotopes and functional gene analysis, the reduction of hematite seems to slow down S-AOM. This contrasts with methane seep environments, where iron oxides appear to stimulate S-AOM and hence attenuate the release of the greenhouse gas methane from the sediments. In the deep methanic zone, the addition of iron oxides inhibits the methanogenesis process and hence methane gas production. The inhibition effect deeper in the sediment is not related to Fe-AOM as a competing process on the methane substrate, since Fe-AOM was not observed throughout the methanic sediments with several iron oxides additions.

Abstract:Anaerobic oxidation of methane and sulfate reduction was studied in the pore waters of four cores at two stations of the middle Okinawa Trough. Pore water vertical distributions of sulfate, methane, sulfide, total alkalinity, ammonium, and phosphate were determined in this study. Our results show strong linear sulfate concentration gradients of 6.83 mmol m−1 in Core A and 5.96 mmol m−1 in Core C, which were collected from two stations. Concurrent variations of methane, total alkalinity and hydrogen sulfide all exhibit steep increases with depth at both cores, which indicate active methane seep activities around two stations. Pore water ammonium and phosphate concentrations reveal minor influences of organic matter degradation on sulfate reduction at two stations. Sulfate methane interface (SMI) was extrapolated from linear sulfate profiles in methane seep cores. Shallower SMI depths (A: 4.9 mbsf; C: 5.4 mbsf) indicate strong methane fluxes and active anaerobic oxidation of methane in the underlying sediments.

Abstract:Sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (SD-AOM) and organoclastic sulfate reduction (OSR) are the two processes that consume sulfate in methane-rich marine sediments. Determining the relative contribution of each process to overall sulfate reduction is critical to assess the global carbon and sulfur cycle in marine settings. The analysis of sulfur and oxygen isotope compositions of porewater sulfate (delta O-18(SO4) and delta S-34(SO4)) provides crucial insight into sulfate reduction pathways and the dynamics of the sedimentary sulfur cycle. The delta O-18(SO4) and delta S-34(SO4) ratio is governed by net sulfate reduction rates and has been widely used to distinguish SD-AOM from OSR. Furthermore, delta O-18(SO4) and delta S-34(SO4) slopes are believed to vary with changing methane flux. To enhance the applicability of delta O-18(SO4) and delta S-34(SO4) plots for the tracing of SD-AOM activity and methane flux, we investigate sulfate sulfur and oxygen isotopes of porewaters from three piston cores collected from the Haima seeps of the South China Sea. Reaction-transport modeling previously indicated that sulfate consumption was dominated by SDAOM under changing methane fluxes (1126 mmol m(-2) yr(-1) to 26 mmol m(-2) yr(-1)). Our new data demonstrate an increase of the initial delta O-18(SO4) and delta S-34(SO4) slope when methane flux decreases. An initial slope of 0.43 corresponds to a methane flux of 194 mmol m(-2) yr(-1), the lowest currently known methane flux producing a small delta O-18(SO4) and delta S-34(SO4) slope diagnostic for SD-AOM in sediments close to the seafloor. When methane flux decreases to 26 mmol m(-2) yr(-1), a small slope (0.48) is only observed in deeper sediment layers. Our results also reveal an increase of delta O-18(SO4) and delta S-34(SO4) slopes with decreasing SD-AOM rates. We estimate that net sulfate reduction rates can be as low as 10(-9) mol cm(-3) yr(-1) to produce slopes smaller than 0.5 in SD-AOM-dominated settings. In OSR-dominated settings, delta O-18(SO4) and delta S-34(SO4) slopes tend to be significantly higher than 0.5, while net sulfate reduction rates tend to be lower than 10(-5) mol cm(-3) yr(-1). This study reveals that quantification of methane flux is required to utilize the full potential of delta O-18(SO4) vs. delta S-34(SO4) plots in the endeavor of tracing SD-AOM activity and the dynamics of the sulfur cycle in methane-rich environments.

Abstract:Several authigenic minerals were identified by XRD and SEM analyses in shallow sediments from the Southeast Hainan Basin, on the northern slope of South China Sea. These minerals include miscellaneous carbonates, sulphates, and framboidal pyrite, and this mineral assemblage indicates the existence of gas hydrates and a methane seep. The assemblage and fabric features of the minerals are similar to those identified in cold-seep sediments, which are thought to be related to microorganisms fostered by dissolved methane. Chemical composition of pore water shows that the concentrations of SO42-, Ca2+, Mg2+, and Sr2+ decrease clearly, and the ratios of Mg2+ to Ca2+ and Sr2+ to Ca2+ increase sharply with depth. These geochemical properties are similar to those where gas hydrates occur in the world. All results seem to indicate clearly the presence of gas hydrates or deep water oil (gas) reservoirs underneath the seafloor.

Abstract:Magnetic greigite may be a valuable indicator for methane emissions in the geological past, if its formation pathway and diagenetic environment can be unambiguously defined. Here, we investigate sulfur isotopic compositions of iron sulfides and ferrous iron concentrations of thick greigite‐bearing sediments (TGBSs) in the South Yellow Sea, a shallow marginal sea with strong methane emissions. For the first time, isotopically heavy iron sulfides (up to 28.7‰ in δ34S and 0.19‰ in Δ33S) and enrichments of ferrous iron in the TGBSs are observed. We interpret the data as indicating synchronic occurrences of anaerobic oxidation of methane coupled to sulfate and iron reductions, which occur in coastal methanic zones with limited sulfate availability and therefore probably imply leakages of methane. Consequently, we suggest that greigite is a promising geological indicator for tracing methane liberated from coastal sediments, accounting for ∼60% of the currently rising global marine methane budget.
