Abstract:LineScout is a transmission line inspection robot developed by Hydro-Québec. In operation since 2006, it has been deployed on a few major grids throughout the world. Over the years, the technology has demonstrated its value for grid operators, notably by contributing to the reliability, the sustainability and the availability of transmission networks. This paper presents the latest developments and adapted systems implemented on LineScout as well as a summary on some field deployments performed over the last two years.
Synthesis and Characterization of Silica–Tantala Microporous Membranes for Gas Separations Fabricated Using Chemical Vapor Deposition

Abstract:Composite membranes consisting of microporous tantalum-doped silica layers supported on mesoporous alumina substrates were fabricated using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in both thermal decomposition and counter-flow oxidative deposition modes. Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was used as the silica precursor and tantalum (V) ethoxide (TaEO) as the tantalum source. Amounts of TaEO from 0 mol% to 40 mol% were used in the CVD gas mixture and high H2 permeances above 10−7 mol m−2 s−1 Pa−1 were obtained for all conditions. Close examination was made of the H2/CH4 and O2/CH4 selectivities due to the potential use of these membranes in methane reforming or partial oxidation of methane applications. Increasing deposition temperature correlated with increasing H2/CH4 selectivity at the expense of O2/CH4 selectivity, suggesting a need to optimize membrane synthesis for a specific selectivity. Measured at 400 °C, the highest H2/CH4 selectivity of 530 resulted from thermal CVD at 650 °C, whereas the highest O2/CH4 selectivity of 6 resulted from thermal CVD at 600 °C. The analysis of the membranes attempted by elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy revealed that Ta was undetectable because of instrumental limitations. However, the physical properties of the membranes indicated that the Ta must have been present at least at dopant levels. It was found that the pore size of the resultant membranes increased from 0.35 nm for pure Si to 0.37 nm for a membrane prepared with 40 mol% Ta. Similarly, an increase in Ta in the feed resulted in an increase in O2/CH4 selectivity at the expense of H2/CH4 selectivity. Additionally, it resulted in a decrease in hydrothermal stability, with the membranes prepared with higher Ta suffering greater permeance and selectivity declines during 96 h of exposure to 16 mol% H2O in Ar at 650 °C.

Abstract:In the present study, the mixtures of bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) were proposed to design highly selective hybrid silica membranes for gas separation by the sol-gel method. The role of MTES in the hybrid membranes was investigated by changing the ratio of the two precursors. The membrane derived from mixture of 1 BTESE and 3 MTES exhibited the highest H-2 and CO2 permeance with 7.99 x 10(-7) mol m(-2) S-1 Pa-1 and 3.53 x 10(-7) mol M-2 s(-1) Pa-1, respectively. In contrast, the superior selectivity was achieved on the membrane derived from mixture of 1 BTESE and 2 MTES, in which the H-2/N-2, H-2/CH4, CO2/N-2, and CO2/CH4 were found to be 64.4, 73.6, 28.5, and 32.6, respectively, which indicated that the structures of BTESE-MTES hybrid membranes can be adjusted by tuning the ratios of MTES to BTESE. Moreover, the membranes also performed well in the binary-component mixture gases and high-temperature test.

Abstract:Based on embryologic anatomy and clinical practice, the pancreas can be divided into four segments: the posterior, anterior, medial, and distal segments. The embryologically termed ventral pancreas is now retermed the posterior segment. The posterior segment is drained by the duct of Wirsung, and the anterior segment is drained by the duct of Santorini. According to this segmental classification, independent resection of each segment can be performed systematically. This concept will contribute to establishing more ration and anatomic operative procedures. Recent anatomic study in autopsies has revealed a persistent embryologic fusion plane between the anterior and posterior segments. To establish new operative procedures based on to this pancreatic segmental classification, further investigations on the blood supply of each segment and the embryologic fusion plane are required.
Hydrogen Separation in Hydrogen–Methylcyclohexane–Toluene Gaseous Mixtures through Triphenylmethoxysilane-Derived Silica Membranes Prepared by Chemical Vapor Deposition

Abstract:Amorphous triphenylmethoxysilane-derived silica membranes were prepared by chemical vapor deposition to demonstrate excellent hydrogen separation performance from gaseous mixtures containing methylcyclohexane (MCH) and toluene (TOL). Pure H2 permeances were on the order of 10–6 mol m–2 s–1 Pa–1, while the single gas permeances of SF6, TOL, and MCH were all on the order of 10–11 mol m–2 s–1 Pa–1, regardless of the ranges of pressure difference and temperature (0.1–0.5 MPa and 373–573 K). This agrees with the order of kinetic diameters for these gaseous molecules, showing high selectivity of hydrogen over the hydrocarbons. The influence of the coexisting MCH and TOL on H2 separation performance through the same membrane was investigated in the gaseous mixtures after eliminating the effect of water molecules. Similar negative effects were observed for MCH and TOL on the H2 separation properties, with the influence of TOL being slightly higher than that of MCH for H2–X (X = MCH, TOL) binary mixtures. Moreover, such the silica membrane exhibited high hydrogen separation performance and good stability in the H2–MCH–TOL ternary gaseous mixtures under operating conditions, which would have potential application to extract high purity hydrogen over 99.99% in membrane reactors. The membrane underwent eight mixtures exposure–regeneration cycles and exhibited stable medium-term running for over 25 days including gas-exchanging cycles and temperature cycles at 573–373 K.

Abstract:A new polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) designed with eight –(CH2)3–NH–(CH2)2–NH2 groups (PNEN) at its apexes was used as nanocomposite uploading into 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE)-derived organosilica to prepare mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for gas separation. The mixtures of BTESE-PNEN were uniform with particle size of around 31 nm, which is larger than that of pure BTESE sols. The characterization of thermogravimetric (TG) and gas permeance indicates good thermal stability. A similar amine-contained material of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was doped into BTESE to prepare hybrid membranes through a copolymerized strategy as comparison. The pore size of the BTESE-PNEN membrane evaluated through a modified gas-translation model was larger than that of the BTESE-APTES hybrid membrane at the same concentration of additions, which resulted in different separation performance. The low values of Ep(CO2)-Ep(N2) and Ep(N2) for the BTESE-PNEN membrane at a low concentration of PNEN were close to those of copolymerized BTESE-APTES-related hybrid membranes, which illustrates a potential CO2 separation performance by using a mixed matrix membrane strategy with multiple amine POSS as particles.

Abstract:A crucial problem in membrane-based gas separation is to fabricate membranes with excellent permeability, selectivity, and stability. Here, a high-performance carbon molecular sieves membrane of TR-CMS/SSZ-13 was successfully produced by pyrolyzing a thermally rearranged (TR) mixed matrix membrane (MMM) that obtained from a copolyimide precursor (6FDA/ODA/6FAP(3:2)) and SSZ-13 zeolite as filler at 450 °C. The effect of SSZ-13 zeolite content and structures of precursors on the transport behavior of derived CMS membranes was thoroughly studied. After TR process, the as formed polybenzoxazole (PBO) chain resulted in an enhanced rigidity, higher fractional free volume (0.15 vs 0.17), and a significantly increased (1898 times) BET surface area. Further enhancing the treatment temperature to 650 °C, the formed TR-CMS membranes exhibited a huge improved BET surface area from 228.2 to 639.3 m 2 /g, delivering a remarkable gas separation performance with H 2 permeability of 7089 Barrer and H 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 136. When doping with SSZ-13 till 15 wt%, the TR-CMS/SSZ-13–15 % showed an even higher H 2 (9726 Barrer) and CO 2 permeability (6932 Barrer), as well as H 2 /CH 4 (150 vs 136) and CO 2 /CH 4 (107 vs 57) selectivity than the pure TR-CMS, which surpassed the newest 2019 Robeson Upper bound. This can associate with the strong interaction between the modified SSZ-13 and the polymer matrix that prevent the collapse of the aromatic strand during the pyrolysis process, thereby create more ultra-micropore volume and concentration. Conclusively, pyrolyzing TR-MMM precursor is an effective way to form high-performance membranes with good potential for CO 2 separation and H 2 purification.

Abstract:TS-1 molecular sieves were synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Results showed that the morphology, crystallinity, and purity of TS-1 were closely related to the Ti/Si ratio, crystallization time, crystallization temperature, and calcination time. The TS-1 particles were incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane to form mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), and these MMMs were first used to separate ethanol/water mixtures via pervaporation. Abstract:Gas separation by using membrane-based technology is one of the rising technologies used in the industry. It has many advantages such as low in cost and energy consumption. However, this technology is limited because of the "trade-off" exists between permeability and selectivity of the membrane. Thus, in this study, an inorganic filler, halloysite nanotube is modified with 3-aminopropyl(triethoxysilane) and then incorporated into the polysulfone polymer and the performance of the mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) is investigated. MMMs were analyzed by using SEM, FTIR, tensile and gas permeation tests which studied the morphological differences, mechanical strength, and membrane permeability and selectivity towards CO2 and CH4 respectively. The performance of the MMMs was compared with neat membrane and MMMs with unmodified HNTs. SEM results show an increase of 111% on the thickness of the dense skin layer of MMMs with APTES-modified HNTs compared to the neat membrane and the MMMs with unmodified HNTs. Elongation at break for MMMs with 3-APTES-modified HNTs also increased to 24.22%. The gas separation performance of the MMMs with 3-APTES modified HNTs shows an overall increase of 25.37% in the membrane selectivity compared to MMMs with unmodified HNTs while when coating is done, the selectivity of the MMMs with 3-APTES modified HNTs shows an increase from 0.845 to 10.158 for a pressure of 2 bar showing that coating helps in increasing the selectivity of the membrane.

Abstract:The metal-organic framework (MOFs) of MIL-53 was functionalized by aminosilane grafting and then incorporated into Ultem®1000 polymer matrix to fabricate mixed matrix hollow fiber membrane (MMHFM) with high separation performance. SEM, XRD, and TGA were performed to characterize the functionalized MIL-53 and prepared MMHFM. The filler particles were embedded in membrane successfully and dispersed well in the polymer matrix. The incorporation of MOFs endowed MMHFM better thermal stability. Moreover, effects of solvent ratio in spinning dope, spinning condition, and testing temperature on gas separation performance of MMHFM were investigated. By optimizing dope composition, air gap distance, and bore fluid composition, MMHFM containing functionalized MIL-53 achieved excellent gas permeance and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity. The CO 2 permeance increased from 12.2 GPU for pure Ultem HFM to 30.9 GPU and the ideal CO 2 /N 2 selectivity was enhanced from 25.4 to 34.7 simultaneously. Additionally, gas permeance increased but the selectivity decreased with the temperature increase, which followed the solution-diffusion based transport mechanism.

Abstract:Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) are promising candidates to improve the competitiveness of membrane technology against energy-intensive conventional technologies. In this work, MMM composed of poly(octylmethylsiloxane) (POMS) and activated carbon (AC) were investigated with respect to separation of higher hydrocarbons (C3+) from permanent gas streams. Membranes were prepared as thin film composite membranes on a technical scale and characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and permeation measurements with binary mixtures of n-C₄H10/CH₄ under varying operating conditions (feed and permeate pressure, temperature, feed gas composition) to study the influence on separation performance. SEM showed good contact and absence of defects. Lower permeances but higher selectivities were found for MMM compared to pure POMS membrane. Best results were obtained at high average fugacity and activity of n-C₄H10 with the highest selectivity estimated to be 36.4 at n-C₄H10 permeance of 12 mN³/(m²·h·bar). Results were complemented by permeation of a multi-component mixture resembling a natural gas application, demonstrating the superior performance of MMM.

Improving the Pervaporation Performance of PDMS Membranes for Trichloroethylene by Incorporating Silane-Modified ZSM-5 Zeolite

Abstract:The hydrophobic nature of inorganic zeolite particles plays a crucial role in the efficacy of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for the separation of trichloroethylene (TCE) through pervaporation. This study presents a novel approach to further augment the hydrophobicity of ZSM-5. The ZSM-5 zeolite molecular sieve was subjected to modification using three different silane coupling agents, namely, n-octyltriethoxysilane (OTES), γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570), and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550). The water contact angles of the resulting OTES@ZSM-5, KH-570@ZSM-5, and KH-550@ZSM-5 particles exhibited significant increases from 97.2° to 112.8°, 109.1°, and 102.7°, respectively, thereby indicating a notable enhancement in hydrophobicity. Subsequently, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated by incorporating the aforementioned silane-modified ZSM-5 particles into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), leading to a considerable improvement in the adsorption selectivity of these membranes towards trichloroethylene (TCE). The findings indicate that the PDMS membrane with a 20 wt.% OTES@ZSM-5 particle loading exhibits superior pervaporation performance. When subjected to a temperature of 30 °C, flow rate of 100 mL/min, and vacuum of 30 Kpa, the separation factor and total flux of a 3 × 10−7 wt.% TCE solution reach 328 and 155 gm−2·h−1, respectively. In comparison to the unmodified ZSM-5/PDMS membrane, the separation factor demonstrates a 41% increase, while the TCE flux experiences a 6% increase. Consequently, this approach effectively enhances the pervaporation separation capabilities of the PDMS membrane for TCE.

High-performance CO2-selective Hybrid Membranes by Exploiting MOF-breathing Effects.

Abstract:Conventional CO2 separation in the petrochemical industry via cryogenic distillation or amine-based absorber-stripper units is energy intensive and environmentally unfriendly. Membrane-based gas separation technology, on the other hand, has contributed significantly to the development of energy-efficient systems for e.g. natural gas purification. The implementation of commercial polymeric membranes in gas separation processes is restricted by their permeability-selectivity trade-off and by their insufficient thermal and chemical stability. Herein, we present the fabrication of Matrimid®-based membrane loaded with a breathing metal-organic framework (MIL-53(Al)-NH2) which is capable of separating binary CO2/CH4 gas mixtures with high selectivities without sacrificing much of its CO2 permeabilities. NH2-MIL-53(Al) crystals were embedded in a polyimide (PI) matrix and the mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) were treated at elevated temperatures (up to 350 °C) in air to trigger PI crosslinking and to create PI-MOF bonds at the interface to effectively seal the grain boundary. Most importantly, the MOF transitions from its narrow-pore form to the large-pore form during this treatment, allows the PI chains to partly penetrate the pores and crosslink with the amino functions at the pore mouth of the NH2-MIL-53 and stabilizes the open-pore form of MIL-53(Al). This crosslinked MMM, with MOF pore entrances made more selective by the anchored PI-chains, achieves outstanding CO2/CH4 selectivities. This approach provides significant advancement towards the design of selective MMMs with enhanced thermal and chemical stabilities which could also be applicable for other potential applications, such as separation of hydrocarbons (olefin/paraffin or isomers), pervaporation and solvent resistant nanofiltration.

Abstract:The typical procedure used to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), where the pre-obtained filler and polymer are simply mixed together before casting, often suffers from limited polymer-filler adhesion. Herein, we prepare a series of novel MMMs with improved interfacial compatibility by preparing the matrix (Tröger's base polymer, TB) and the filler (three-dimensional Tröger's base-bridged porous network, 3D-TB) under the same reaction system, where in-situ crosslinking reaction between them happens simultaneously. Thanks to the excellent interfacial miscibility, the as-developed 10 wt%_3D-TB@TB membrane shows the tensile strength and elongation stain at break of 65.4 MPa and 10.12 %, respectively, which are higher than those of its counterpart synthesized by conventional procedure (55.82 MPa and 7.05 %, respectively). More importantly, both the gas permeability and selectivity of the in-situ crosslinked MMMs show an obvious improvement involving CO 2 /N 2 , CO 2 /CH 4 , and O 2 /N 2 separation. Specifically, for O 2 /N 2 binary gas separation, the 10 wt%_3D-TB@TB membrane displayed a O 2 permeability of 53.2 Barrers and O 2 /N 2 selectivity of 6.1, which are improved by 72 % and 45 % in comparison to the unfilled membrane, overcoming the 2008 Robson upper bound. Moreover, the physical aging of the in-situ crosslinked MMMs is also effectively controlled. These results demonstrate that the in-situ polymerization and crosslinking is an outstanding approach for the construction of defect-free MMMs with enhanced gas separation performances.

Molecular simulation of [P8883][Tf2N] ionic liquid decorated silica in 6FDA-ODA based mixed matrix membrane for enhanced CO2/CH4 separation

Abstract:Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) have been reported to have considerable scope in gas separation applications because of their merged inherent strength of a durable polymer matrix and the exceptional performance capabilities of inorganic fillers. The selection of comparatively suitable polymers with fillers that can match each other and boost interfacial compatibility while ensuring uniform dispersion of filler within the polymer is still intensively demanding and is challenging at the experimental scale. Ionic liquids (ILs) are effective in promoting better dispersion and compatibility, leading to improved separation performance. A computational molecular simulation approach is employed in current work to design a hybrid membrane having Trioctapropyl phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [P8883][Tf2N] IL decorated silica as a filler and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride-4,4'-oxydianiline (6FDA-ODA) polymer for carbon dioxide (CO2) separation from methane (CH4). Thermophysical and gas transport properties under pure and mixed gas condition (30, 50, and 70% CO2/CH4) within the MMMs with varying filler loadings (5, 10, and 15 wt% IL-silica) are examined via Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. Membrane characteristics like glass transition temperature (T g), Fractional Free Volume (v f), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), solubility, diffusivity, permeability, and selectivity for neat and IL-silica filled 6FDA-ODA are computed. The results show that the T g of the composite membrane with 5 wt% IL-silica is found to be considerably higher (with 305 °C) than that of the pure 6FDA-ODA polymer having 298 °C. A higher T g value highlights the effective dispersion and higher adhesion between the filler and polymer membrane. Additionally, CO2 permeability for 5 wt% IL-silica/6FDA-ODA MMM is significantly improved, measuring 319.0 barrer while maintaining a CO2/CH4 selectivity of 16.2. These values are 89% and 56% respectively, greater than the corresponding values of neat 6FDA-ODA membrane. Published data from the literature review is used to validate the findings and guarantee their reliability. The obtained results exhibited an error in the range of 0.7-9%. Hence, it is concluded from the study that molecular simulation can be used to design IL decorated silica incorporated within 6FDA-ODA matrix, which is able to boost the interfacial compatibility, with elevated CO2/CH4 selectivity and CO2 permeability.
Pervaporation membrane for desalination derived from tetraethylorthosilicate-methyltriethoxysilane

Abstract:Silica membrane synthesis from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) was carried out using ethanol-acetic acid solvent through a sol–gel process. The effects of TEOS-MTES mol composition of 100-0, 90-10, 75-25, 50-50, 25-75, 10-90, and 0-100 and calcination temperatures of 350 and 500 °C were studied. The water contact angle was used to examine the hydrophobicity of silica thin films. A close correlation between hydrophobicity and the presence of the Si−OH and C–H groups was obtained. Hydrophobicity was enhanced by increasing the C−H/Si−O−Si ratio and decreasing Si−OH/Si−O−Si ratio. Silica membrane material maintained hydrophobic properties up to 400 °C. Thermal stability went up with the rise in MTES content. All silica xerogels exhibited microporous character with decreased pore volume and surface area with lower TEOS content. The pervaporation technique systematically studied the TEOS-MTES silica membrane's desalination performance using various saltwater concentrations and feed temperatures. The TEOS-MTES composition played an essential role in determining the membrane's character and performance, salt rejection, and water fluxes. The high TEOS content led to high water flux. Alternatively, a high MTES content led to a high salt rejection. All membranes provided good salt rejection with values up to 99%, especially those with high MTES contents.

Abstract:With the aim of developing thermally/hydrothermally stable silica membranes for H2 separation, dimethoxydimethylsilane-derived silica membranes were prepared via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at various temperatures. This process employed a substrate having an intermediate layer with a gallium-loaded gamma-alumina coating that had been calcined at 1073 K. The data demonstrate that this intermediate layer was it -self thermally stable at 1073 K and hydrothermally stable at 973 K. A systematic evaluation of membrane performances under thermal/hydrothermal conditions confirmed that membranes prepared at 973 K were more stable than those fabricated at 873 K under dry conditions. In addition, the loss in H2 permeance under hydrothermal conditions was lower in the case that the CVD temperature was 973 K. Hence, to ensure stability, the temperature at which such membranes are employed should be lower than the CVD processing temperature.
Remarkably enhanced molecular sieving effect of carbon molecular sieve membrane by enhancing the concentration of thermally rearranged precursors

Abstract:A significant obstacle that persists in the field of membrane-based gas separation is the development of advanced membranes. In this study, a series of thermally rearranged (TR) membrane precursors (6FDA/ODA/6FAP) with gradient concentration of 6FAP was selected for carbon molecular sieve membranes (TR-CMS) formation. The investigation into the structural evolution from polyimide to TR precursor and finally to CMS membrane utilized various characterization techniques to manipulate the relationship between membrane structure formation and their separation performance. Results show that the structural properties of intermediate TR-polymers, strongly influenced by the –OH content, significantly affect the resultant CMS membrane performance. Specifically, a higher –OH concentration in pristine membrane at 450 °C increases chain rigidity and FFV, leading to a more open pore structure and enhanced gas permeability in TR membranes. Interestingly, TR-CMS derived from increased PBO content exhibits a marked decrease in BET surface area, which correlates with improved molecular sieving performance. This can be attributed to the increased PBO content in the precursor, facilitated degradation upon further heating, thus leads to more orderly structure of the resulting CMS, thereby significantly enhanced molecular sieving performance. The TR-CMS-0.5 sample exhibited the most favorable gas separation performance (P H2 = 3843 and P CO2 = 901 Barrer) as well as high H 2 /CH 4 (6 1 0) and CO 2 /CH 4 (1 4 3) selectivity, which exceeded the 2019 Upper bound line. In addition, the TR-CMS-0.5 demonstrates a remarkable mixed-gas CO 2 /CH 4 (50:50) separating performance that far exceeding its 2018 Upper bound line. In conclusion, the adoption of gradient PBO precursors for preparation of CMS membrane materials show great potential for hydrogen recovery and CO 2 removal from natural gas.

Effect of chemical vapor deposition of toluene on gas separation performance of carbon molecular sieve membranes

Abstract:A carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membrane is a microporous membrane that can serve as a molecular sieve. Tuning the pore size of a CMS membrane to improve the selectivity of desirable gas pair is highly necessary. Herein, we report the first study on the toluene vapor modification of a CMS membrane that shows high H2 selectivity. A commercial polyimide hollow fiber membrane was used as the polymeric precursor, and it was pyrolyzed at different temperatures from 625 to 700 ℃ for up to 120 min in an inert nitrogen atmosphere. Toluene vapor was introduced into the nitrogen stream for different durations (10–50 min) at the final pyrolysis temperature. The permeance of the resulting CMS membranes for H2, CO2, O2, N2, and CH4 gases was evaluated at 35 ℃ under 1 atm pressure. The gas permeance and selectivity could be readily controlled by adjusting the pyrolysis temperature and duration of toluene vapor addition for membrane modification. Upon comparing samples with similar H2 permeances, the toluene-vapor-modified membrane was found to exhibit a higher selectivity for H2/CO2, H2/N2, and H2/CH4. This could not be realized simply by increasing the pyrolysis temperature without toluene vapor addition. For instance, a CMS membrane pyrolyzed at 675 ℃ with 20 min of toluene vapor addition showed H2/CH4 selectivity of 4200 and H2 permeance of 270 GPU, while a CMS membrane pyrolyzed at 700 ℃ without using toluene vapor showed a lower H2/CH4 selectivity of 1100 and a similar H2 permeance of 250 GPU. The optimal pyrolysis conditions of the CMS membrane subjected to toluene vapor modification depend on the targeted gas pair. The proposed toluene vapor modification process can be used as a simple and effective additional treatment for the preparation of CMS membranes.

Abstract:Tröger's-based polymeric membranes have received tremendous attention for their inherent high free volume and excellent gas permeability. However, its selectivity was still unable to meet their industrial demand. In effort to achieve an optimization comprehensive performance, a set of homogeneous polymer chains was synthesized to fine-tune the free volume. These membranes were designed by copolymerization diamine moiety of 3, 3′-dimethylbiphenyl-4, 4′-diamine and 2, 2-bis [4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl] hexafluoropropane. Significant characterizations of their physical properties and chemical structures were carried out by FTIR, TGA, XRD, and mechanical strength. The effects of variation diamine content ratio were studied. An available simulation was carried out to elucidate the influence of introduced diamine. The permselectivity of membranes was evaluated by H 2 , CO 2 , O 2 , N 2 , and CH 4 . The objective performances of feed gas pressure, test temperature, and aging stability on membranes were further studied. The exciting results demonstrated that our membranes exhibit improved gas performance. Notably, for H 2 separation, the H 2 /N 2 and H 2 /CH 4 selectivity was significantly enhanced by 125.7% (from 27.20 to 61.40) and 126.9% (from 30.41 to 69.02) with the addition of 30 mol% fluorinated diamine moiety while without much-compromising gas permeability was observed. These findings enlighten a facile and effective strategy in Tröger's-based polymer design towards high-purity gas separation.
