Abstract:As an important part of the global carbon cycle, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration and its stable carbon isotopic composition (δ13CDIC) have been used to constrain the sources of DIC in rivers. In this study, we systematically investigated the water chemistry, DIC contents, and δ13CDIC values in a tropical agricultural river in northeast Thailand. The water temperature ranged from 20.3 to 31.3 °C, and water pH values ranged from 6.4 to 8.4, with seasonal variations. Based on the major ion compositions, the hydro-chemical type of the Mun River water was a unique Na–Ca–Cl–HCO3 type, controlled by evaporite and silicate weathering. Seasonal variation of DIC concentrations and its carbon isotopic composition was obvious; DIC and δ13CDIC were significantly lower in the wet season (135 to 3146 μmol/L and −31.0‰ to −7.0‰) compared to the dry season (185 to 5897 μmol/L and −19.6‰ to −2.7‰). A high level of 12C-enriched DIC/CO2 from soil respiration and organic matter oxidation may cause the low pH values, δ13CDIC values, and high partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in the middle and lower reaches during the wet/rainy season compared to the dry season. This may be responsible for the seasonal and spatial variations of DIC concentrations and δ13CDIC values in the Mun River. According to the relationship between pCO2 and δ13CDIC values, CO2 outgassing may be more significant in the dry season, due to the greater influx of groundwater with higher pCO2 levels; and the rapid CO2 diffusion into the atmosphere will continuously increase the δ13CDIC values and decrease pCO2 levels. These results show that riverine biologic effects and CO2 outgassing play important roles in the DIC and δ13CDIC evolution of this typical agriculturally-dominated watershed.

Inorganic Carbon Parameters Responding to Summer Hypoxia Outside the Changjiang Estuary and the Related Implications

Abstract:The eutrophication, hypoxia and coastal acidification are attracting more and more attention. In this study, inorganic carbon parameters, including dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TA) and calculated partial pressure of CO 2 ( p CO 2 ), obtained from a summer cruise in August, 2009, were used to investigate their integrated response to biological processes accompanying the oxygen depletion in the areas off the Changjiang Estuary. According to the observations, the typical hypoxia occurred in the bottom water just outside the Changjiang Estuary with Dissolved Oxygen (DO) lower than 2.00 mg L −1 . The biological uptake in the surface water and the decomposition of organic matter in the bottom water were fully coupled with each other. The high concentration of Chl_ a (Chl_ a = 10.9 μg L −1 ) and DO (9.25 mg L −1 ), profoundly decreased DIC concentration (1828 μmol kg −1 ) and elevated pH (8.42) was observed in the surface water. The correspondingly increased DIC and depletion of oxygen were observed in the bottom water. The semi-quantitative analysis proved that the locally-produced phytoplankton, determined by primary productivity, was deposited to the bottom and contributed about 76% of total amount of the organic carbon decomposition in the bottom. However, in the bottom hypoxia (DO = 2.05 mg L −1 ) area observed in the Southern Zhejiang coastal water, the responding patterns of inorganic carbon parameters deviated from the previous one. The expanding of Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW), the adding of Hangzhou Bay water (with high DIC concentration) and Coastal Current together modify the DIC background value in this area, and the local degeneration and upwelling process may also help to offset the local DIC removed by net biological uptake in surface water. In addition, when the mixing occurring in autumn, which may break the summer stratification, the excess release of high DIC in the bottom water to the subsurface water could have an important influence on coastal acidification and the CO 2 uptake capacity in this area.
[Effects of Land Use on Riverine Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) and δ13CDIC in a Karst River Basin, Southwestern China]

Abstract:As an important part of the riverine carbon cycle, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) has attracted continuous attention. The stable carbon isotope (δ13CDIC) of DIC can reflect its sources and transformations. However, the effects of land use on DIC and δ13CDIC are rarely investigated. To study the influencing factors of DIC and δ13CDIC, river water samples were collected and analyzed from the Chishui River basin, a typical karst river basin in southwestern China. The upper reaches of the Chishui River basin were predominantly underlain by carbonate sedimentary rocks, whereas the lower reaches contained mostly siliciclastic sedimentary rocks, and the forest coverage in the lower reaches was relatively high. The elemental compositions of the river water revealed that the hydrochemistry of rivers in the upper reaches of the basin was mainly controlled by carbonate weathering, whereas the hydrochemistry of some tributaries in the lower reaches was mainly affected by silicate weathering. During the wet season, the average values of c (DIC) and the δ13CDIC value were (1940±493) μmol·L-1 and (-9±1) ‰, respectively, whereas the c (DIC) was relatively high, and the δ13CDIC value was more positive in the dry season, with the average values of (2334±626) μmol·L-1 and (-7.3±1) ‰, respectively. The DIC of most samples was mainly controlled by carbonate weathering under an open system and was derived from carbonate minerals and atmospheric and soil CO2. The seasonal variations in the c (DIC) and δ13CDIC values suggested that c (DIC) was regulated by climate, hydrology, and biology. The increasing contribution of biological carbon to DIC in summer was the main cause of the more negative δ13CDIC value in the wet season, whereas the dilution effect of higher discharge was the main cause of the low c (DIC) in the wet season. The samples from three tributaries in the lower reaches with the highest proportion of silicate and forest distribution had the highest dissolved organic carbon concentration[c (DOC)], the lowest c (DIC), and the most negative δ13CDIC value in the wet season. The proportion of carbonate distribution had positive correlations with c (DIC) in the wet and dry seasons, indicating that lithology was the main controlling factor of c (DIC). The rivers draining the carbonate areas had a lower c (DIC) and a more negative δ13CDIC value in the wet season than those in the dry season, whereas for the rivers draining non-carbonate areas with high forest coverage, the c (DIC) was higher and the δ13CDIC value was significantly more negative in the wet season than those in the dry season. This implies that c (DIC) and δ13CDIC are significantly affected by land use when they are less affected by lithology.

Abstract:The present study assessed the export of inorganic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus within a large agricultural basin in arid northwestern China. Groundwater of various depths and river water along a 160 km reach were sampled during contrasting flow conditions. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations and δ13C-DIC values indicate that lithogenic carbonate weathering was the main source of DIC in the basin. Discharge played an important role in regulating the amount and flowpath of nutrients mobilized from soils to the river. Ammonium was mobilized mostly by storm flows whereas the other nutrients were exported through both storm and groundwater flows. Hydrological events, occurring on only about 10% of the days for a year, were responsible for more than 40% of annual nutrient exports. Shallow groundwater was an important source of DIC and nitrate in river water within the alluvial plain, where groundwater discharges regulated their longitudinal variability along the river. According to a mixing model using δ13C-DIC and chloride, groundwater comprised 9–34% and 39–60% of river water at high discharge and baseflow, respectively. Together, our data highlight the importance of reducing storm runoffs and monitoring nutrient pollution within this large basin.

Abstract:Understanding the origins and processes of riverine dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is crucial for predicting the global carbon cycle with projected, more frequent climate extremes yet our knowledge has remained fragmented. Here we ask: How and how much do DIC production and export vary across space (shallow vs. deep, uphill vs. depression) and time (daily, seasonal, and annual)? How do the relative contributions of biogenic (soil respiration) and geogenic (carbonate weathering) sources differ under different temperature and hydrological conditions? We answer these questions using a catchment‐scale reactive transport model constrained by stream flow, stable water isotopes, stream DIC, and carbon isotope data from a headwater karstic catchment in southwest China in a subtropical monsoon climate. Results show climate seasonality regulates the timing of DIC production and export. In hot‐wet seasons, high temperature accelerates soil respiration and carbonate weathering (up to a factor of three) via elevating soil CO2 and carbonate solubility, whereas high discharge enhances export by two orders of magnitude compared to cold‐dry seasons. Carbonate weathering is driven more by soil CO2 than water flow. At the annual scale, 92.9% and 7.1% of DIC was produced in shallow and deep zone, respectively, whereas 64.5% and 35.5% of DIC was exported from shallow and deep zone, respectively. These results highlight the uniqueness of subtropical karst areas as synchronous reactors and transporters of DIC during the hot‐wet monsoon, contrasting the asynchronous production and export in other climate regions. A future hotter and wetter climate with more intensive storms in the region may further intensify DIC production and export, accentuating the potential of subtropical karst regions as global hot spots for carbon cycling.

Abstract:Iron (Fe) is an essential element for bio-physiological functioning terrestrial organisms, in particular of aquatic organisms. It is therefore crucial to understand the aquatic iron cycle and geochemical characteristics, which is also significant to obtain the key information on earth-surface evolution. The stable iron isotopic composition (δ56Fe) of the dissolved fraction is determined in the Mun River (main tributary of Mekong River), northeast Thailand to distinguish the human and nature influenced riverine iron geochemical behavior. The results show that dissolved Fe concentration ranges from 8.04 to 135.27 μg/L, and the δ56Fe ranges from −1.34‰ to 0.48‰, with an average of 0.23‰, 0.14‰ and −0.15‰ in the upper, middle and lower reaches, respectively. The δ56Fe values of river water are close to that of the bulk continental crust and other tropical rivers. The correlations between δ56Fe and Fe, Al, and physicochemical parameters show mixing processes of different Fe end-members, including the rock weathering end-member (low Fe/Al ratio and high δ56Fe), the urban activities end-member (high Fe/Al ratio and moderate δ56Fe), and a third end-member with probable sources from the Chi River and reservoir. For the most river water samples, the primary contribution is attributed to rock weathering, and the second is urban activities (only a few samples are from the upper and middle reaches). Thus, Fe isotopes could be employed as a proxy to identify and quantify the natural and anthropogenic contributions, respectively. These findings also provide data support for the scientific management of water resources in the Mun River catchment and other large tropical rivers.

Abstract:Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) holds significant importance within river systems, particularly in karst regions. The concentration of DIC is intricately linked to both biological processes, such as the respiration of organic matter, and geological processes, notably the strength of carbonate weathering. This dual influence exerts a profound impact on regional and global carbon cycles. However, the precise biological and geological origins of DIC in karst rivers remain a subject of debate. In this study, we delineate the sources of DIC in a typical karst catchment (Houzhai catchment) through isotopic analysis coupled with water chemistry examination. The results showed that δ 13 C DIC and Δ 14 C DIC variations range from −14.0 ‰ to −7.3 ‰ and − 426 ‰ to −31 ‰, respectively, with average values of −10.5 ‰ and − 180 ‰. Results derived from the isotopic mixing model suggest that approximately 83 % of DIC emanates from the soil CO 2 , while 17 % originates from carbonate sources. This indicates that biological processes exert a greater influence on DIC within the study area compared to geological processes. Seasonal variation, exemplified by higher DOC concentrations and Δ 14 C DIC values, alongside with lower DIC concentrations and δ 13 C DIC values during the wet season indicate increased input from biogenic sources, closely related to temperature and moisture conditions. Our study underscores an unbalanced contribution from biogenic and geogenic sources in karst rivers, highlighting potential inaccuracies in past carbon sink flux calculations. The roles of biogenic and geogenic sources in the carbon cycling of karst rivers, as well as their responses to future climate change, warrant a reevaluation.

Abstract:The Nyangqu River, the largest right bank tributary of the Yarlung Zangbo River in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, was representative of an alpine riverine carbon cycle experiencing climate change. In this study, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) spatial and seasonal variations, as well as their carbon isotopic compositions (δ13CDIC) in river water and groundwater were systematically investigated to provide constraints on DIC sources, recharge and cycling. Significant changes in the δ13CDIC values (from -2.9‰ to -23.4‰) of the water samples were considered to be the result of different contributions of two dominant DIC origins: soil CO2 dissolution and carbonate weathering. Three types of rock weathering (dissolution of carbonate minerals by H2CO3 and H2SO4, and silicate dissolution by H2CO3) were found to control the DIC input into the riverine system. In DIC cycling, groundwater played a significant role in delivering DIC to the surface water, and DIC supply from tributaries to the main stream increased from the dry season to the wet season. Notably, the depleted δ13CDIC 'peak' around the 88.9° longitude, especially in the September groundwater samples, indicated the presence of 'special' DIC, which was attributed to the oxidation of methane from the Jiangsa wetland located nearby. This wetland could provide large amounts of soil organic matter available for bacterial degradation, producing 13C-depleted methane. Our study provided insights regarding the role of wetlands in riverine carbon cycles and highlighted the contribution of groundwater to alpine riverine DIC cycles.This article is protected by copyright. Constraining the sources and cycling of dissolved inorganic carbon in an alpine river, eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Abstract:It is generally acknowledged that riverine dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) behaviors play a critical role in global carbon cycling and hence have an impact on climate change. However, little is known about the intricate DIC dynamics under various meteorological conditions in the alpine areas. Here, we investigated DIC biogeochemical processes in the Bailong River catchment, eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), by combining measurements of major ions, stable and radioactive isotopic compositions of DIC (δ13CDIC and Δ14CDIC), and physiographic parameters in the Bailong River catchment. Statistics and stoichiometry analyses suggest that multiple biogeochemical processes could affect carbon cycling in the Bailong River catchment. The "old" DIC with low Δ14C values (-472.4 ± 127.8 ‰, n = 3) and stoichiometry analysis of dissolved ions showed clear evidence that carbonate weathering is primarily responsible for water chemistry in the upstream (elevation >2000 m). However, upstream samples showed that δ13CDIC increased between 5 ‰ and 11 ‰ from the theoretical mixing line, concomitant with increasing pH and decreasing pCO2, suggesting that isotopic fractionation of DIC due to CO2 outgassing may be the primary cause of the increased δ13CDIC values. Additionally, the higher Δ14C values (-285.4 ± 123.5 ‰, n = 12) in the downstream region below 2000 m suggest that allochthonous modern carbon had a great impact on DIC variations. The presence of younger DIC may have important implications for the interpretation of inorganic carbon age in downstream rivers. Our study demonstrates that physiographic conditions can regulate DIC behaviors, which can improve estimations of carbon yield and comprehension of global carbon cycle.

Abstract:To better understand the mechanisms relating to hydrological regulations of chemical weathering processes and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) behaviors, high‐frequency sampling campaigns and associated analyses were conducted in the Yu River, South China. Hydrological variability modifies the biogeochemical processes of dissolved solutes, so major ions display different behaviors in response to discharge change. Most ions become diluted with increasing discharge because of the shortened reactive time between rock and water under high‐flow conditions. Carbonate weathering is the main source of major ions, which shows strong chemostatic behavior in response to changes in discharge. Ions from silicate weathering exhibit a significant dilution effect relative to the carbonate‐sourced ions. Under high temperatures, the increased soil CO2 influx from the mineralization of organic material shifts the negative carbon isotope ratios of DIC (δ13CDIC) during the high‐flow season. The δ13CDIC values show a higher sensitivity than DIC contents in response to various hydrological conditions. Results from a modified isotope‐mixing model (IsoSource) demonstrate that biological carbon is a dominant source of DIC and plays an important role in temporal carbon dynamics. Furthermore, this study provides insights into chemical weathering processes and carbon dynamics, highlighting the significant influence of hydrological variability to aid understanding of the global carbon cycle.This article is protected by copyright. The contribution of human activities to dissolved inorganic carbon fluxes in a karst underground river system: evidence from major elements and δ¹³C(DIC) in Nandong, Southwest China

Abstract:Generally, the DIC in karst groundwater is dominantly derived from carbonate dissolution by carbonic acid. However, recently increases in the inorganic carbon flux have been linked to human activities, which nitric and sulfuric acids may contribute to carbonate dissolution. In order to quantify the sources and fluxes of DIC, and evaluate the carbon isotopic evolution of groundwater in Southwest China, the carbonate dissolution by carbonic, sulfuric and nitric acids was evaluated by hydrochemistry and δ¹³C(DIC)of groundwater. The results show that: (1) groundwater collected from residential and agricultural areas, showed higher DIC concentrations and δ¹³C(DIC) than those in groundwater collected from forested and grass land areas; (2) the contributions of carbonate dissolution by carbonic acid to total DIC concentrations in groundwater collected from forested and grass land areas averaged 99%; (3) the contributions of carbonate dissolution by carbonic acid to total DIC concentrations in groundwater, collected from residential and agricultural areas, varied from 40% to 77% with a mean percentage of 62%; (4) while the contributions of carbonate dissolution by sulfuric and nitric acids to total DIC concentrations in groundwater, collected from residential and agricultural areas, varied from 23% to 60% with a mean percentage of 38%; and (5) the δ¹³C(DIC) approaching a value of around -14‰, with a molar ratio between (Ca²⁺+Mg²⁺) and HCO₃⁻ of around 0.5 in groundwater, indicated that the carbonate was dissolved by soil CO₂ from C₃ vegetation under open system conditions. While the δ¹³C(DIC) varying from -5‰ to -11‰, with a variational molar ratio between (Ca²⁺+Mg²⁺) and HCO₃⁻ of 0.5 to 0.8 in groundwater, indicated that carbonate dissolution was controlled by soil CO₂ (from C₃ vegetation), HNO₃ and H₂SO₄. Also, this study indicated that the amount of soil or atmospheric CO₂ consumed during carbonate weathering should be critically evaluated when sulfuric or nitric acids are involved. Thus, not only the exports of inorganic carbon have been enhanced, but also the concentrations of nitrate and sulfate in karst groundwater have been elevated due to carbonate dissolution by sulfuric or nitric acid.
Flux and source of dissolved inorganic carbon in a headwater stream in a subtropical plantation catchment

Abstract:Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in headwater streams significantly contributes to the riverine CO2 emission to the atmosphere and oceans. However, understanding of the sources and mechanisms of DIC generation and mass balances of DIC flux in headwater streams at the scale of catchments remain poor and add to uncertainty in regional carbon estimates. In this study, the input and output of water fluxes and their chemical and isotopic compositions in a headwater stream were investigated from 2016 to 2019 in a subtropical plantation catchment. Our results showed that the headwater stream catchment experienced a net carbon loss of 262–4352 kg C km−2 yr−1 based on the water balance of annual precipitation, evapotranspiration, headwater stream and groundwater discharge, and change in soil water storage. The headwater stream exhibited comparable DIC flux (3561 ± 933 kg C km−2 yr−1) and higher DIC concentration (7.91 ± 3.13 mg L−1) than precipitation (3662 ± 682 kg C km−2 yr−1 and 2.63 ± 1.22 mg L−1, respectively). Differences in DIC concentration between precipitation and headwater stream were mainly controlled by soil CO2 dissolution, carbonate weathering, and their synergistic effects. Relative contributions to DIC fluxes in this headwater stream were 25.3 ± 5.2% by precipitation, 47.3 ± 6.2% by soil biological CO2, and 27.4 ± 7.3% by carbonate weathering. Our results indicated that the DIC-generating processes may result in an underestimation of soil biological CO2 efflux to the atmosphere. Further, soil carbonate weathering, and a net carbon loss at the scale of catchments may be overlooked in acid soils.

Abstract:Studying the temporal dynamics and fluxes of riverine dissolved carbon is crucial in understanding the regional and global carbon cycles under various climatic conditions. Here, we studied the behaviors and fluxes of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) responding to various hydrologic conditions in the Min River, originated from Tibetan Plateau. The DIC concentrations decreased with increasing runoff, partially reflecting dilution effect, which may be ascribed to the shortened fluid transit time and then the reduced contact time with rocks. Nevertheless, DOC concentrations were positively correlated with runoff, which can be attributed to that a large amount of soil organic carbon flowed into the river as a result of the strong flushing effect. The negative relationship between δ13CDIC and runoff could be explained by soil CO2 influx and organic matter degradation during the high flow season. ΔDIC (the production of DIC with changing hydrologic conditions) had a strong positive correlation with water temperature due to the accelerated DIC production rates by high temperature, which always co-varied with intense precipitation in Asian monsoonal regions. The mean DIC/DOC ratio in the Min River was 15.09, and the DOC and DIC fluxes were 1.1 and 15.2 t C km−2 yr−1, respectively, for the studied year. And the DOC and DIC fluxes varied dramatically with runoff changes, suggesting that hydrologic conditions were critical factors for the variations in dissolved carbon export. This study shows that carbon dynamics of rivers draining from the Tibetan Plateau are greatly affected by short-term climatic variabilities, which has implications for understanding global carbon cycle under future climate change.

Abstract:Background Understanding the responses of riverine dissolved carbon dynamics and chemical weathering processes to short-term climatic variabilities is important to understand the Surface-Earth processes under ongoing climate change. Temporal variations of solutes and stable carbon isotope of dissolved inorganic carbon (δ 13 C DIC ) were analysed during a hydrological year in the Guijiang River, South China. We aimed to unravel the chemical weathering processes and carbon dynamics in karst areas under ongoing climate changes. Results Significant positive relationships were found between weathering rates and climatic factors (i.e. temperature and discharge) over the hydrological year. The total flux of CO 2 consumption (760.4 × 10 3 mol/km 2 /year) in the Guijiang River was much higher than the global mean flux, with a higher CO 2 consumption capacity in the Guijiang River relative to most other global rivers. Chemical weathering fluxes in this karst area showed high sensitivity to global climate change. CO 2 evasion during the warm–wet seasons was much lower than those during cold–dry seasons. Light δ 13 C DIC values occurred under high-flow conditions, corresponding with the high temperatures in high-flow seasons. IsoSource modelling revealed that biological carbon could account for 53% of all dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), controlling the temporal carbon variabilities. Conclusion This study quantitatively evaluated the temporal variations in CO 2 fluxes and carbon cycling of karstic river systems and demonstrated that riverine carbon cycling will have a higher sensibility to ongoing global climate change. High discharges accelerate solutes transport, with relatively large quantities of 13 C-depleted carbon being flushed into rivers. Meanwhile, high temperatures also accelerate organic carbon mineralisation, producing high content of soil CO 2 , whose influx can shift the 13 C-depleted values in the high-flow seasons. Taken together, biological carbon influx should be responsible for the temporal carbon dynamics.

Abstract:Most reservoirs in subtropical areas experience periodic variations in the thermal structure of their water columns, with times of strong thermal stratification being succeeded by periods of mixing, over the course of the year. Understanding of the transport and transformation of dissolved inorganic carbon over such thermal cycles in artificial reservoirs remains poor. To address this problem, this study examined the spatiotemporal behavior of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), carbon isotope ratios (δ13CDIC), and CO2 emission (FCO2), from 2014 to 2018 in a subtropical, groundwater-fed reservoir in southern China. It was found that CO2 emissions during mixing periods are much higher than in thermally stratified periods (particularly during transition from stratified to mixing) as a result of upwelling and release of dissolved CO2 (CO2aq) accumulated in the hypolimnion. CO2 emission fluxes at the water-gas interface accounted for only a small proportion of the DIC in the reservoir. The relationships between of DIC and δ13CDIC displayed two distinct modes, due to spatial differences in water depths and to strong thermal stratification during warmer seasons: (1) DIC concentrations increase and δ13CDIC values decrease from epilimnion to hypolimnion, and (2) δ13CDIC values decrease with increasing DIC concentrations but δ13CDIC is progressively enriched near the bottom during periods of thermal stratification. In addition, this study found three distinct processes of DIC accumulation and consumption in the reservoir: (1) DIC accumulated in the hypolimnion during thermal stratification periods, due to carbon retention but (2) DIC was substantially consumed in the epilimnion during such periods, and (3) average DIC concentrations and pCO2 increased significantly from upstream to downstream along the reservoir, while average δ13CDIC values became lighter. These results highlight that carbon behavior in groundwater‑fed reservoirs is often controlled by a combination of biogeochemical processes and seasonal variations in thermal structure. Sampling and monitoring strategies should consider these factors in order to accurately estimate carbon budgets in reservoirs, lakes or ponds.

Abstract:Glioblastoma multiforme of the cerebellum is rare. Approximately 33 case of cerebellar glioblastoma have been reported. Two-thirds of the cases occurred in adults and the male to female ratio was 2:1. The mean age was 46.7 years in adults and 10.4 years in children. Most of the tumors were lateral in location. Two of the patients (6%) had multiple glioblastomas. The time from onset of symptoms to death was approximately one year.

Abstract:In order to understand the inorganic carbon cycle of the groundwater-fed reservoir in karst area, Dalongdong Reservoir, which is located at Shanglin County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, was investigated from 12th to 20th July, 2014. Concentration of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), delta13C of DIC (delta13C(DIC)), partial CO2 pressure (pCO2) and CO2 flux across water-air interface were studied by observation in situ and high-resolution diel monitoring. Results show that: (1) DIC concentration and water pCO2 increased from upstream area to downstream area [DIC(average)): from 122.88 to 172.02 mg x L(-1), pCO2(average) : from 637.91 x 10(-6) to 1399.97 x 10(-6)], while delta13C(DIC) decreased from upstream area to downstream area [delta13C(DIC(average): from -4.34% per hundred to -6.97% per hundred] in the reservoir. (2) CO2 efflux across water-air interface varied from 7.11 to 335.54 mg x (m2 x h)(-1) with mean of 125.03 mg x (m2 x h)(-1) in Dalongdong reservoir surface-layer waters, which was the source of atmospheric CO2. CO2 effluxes across water-air interface in upstream area [mean 131.73 mg x (m2 x h)(-1)] and downstream area [mean 170.25 mg x (m2 x h)(-1)] were higher than that in middle area [mean 116.05 mg x (m2 x h))(-1)] in the reservoir. (3) Water pCO2 and CO2 efflux across water-air interface showed similar characteristics of diel variations, which decreased in daylight and increased in night and showed a negative correlation with chlorophyll a (Chla). Possible reasons of research results are found as follows: (1) DIC concentration, water pCO2 and delta13C(DIC) are influenced by biomass of phytoplankton, turbidity, conductivity, the depth of water and transparency, while CO2 efflux across water-air interface is controlled by both of biomass of phytoplankton and wind speed. (2) Photosynthesis, respiration and vertical motion of phytoplankton possibly affect diel variations of DIC cycle in the groundwater-fed reservoir in karst area.

Abstract:Cascade damming has seriously affected the hydrologic regimes and solutes transport of the river systems. However, the effect of damming on carbon cycle and the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, to reveal the effects of damming on riverine dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) transport, the water chemistry and stable isotopic signature of dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13CDIC) were analyzed in the tributaries and four subtropical karst reservoirs on the Pearl River in southern China. From reservoir epilimnion to hypolimnion, DIC concentrations increased from 183.2 to 229.4 mg L−1, 167.6 to 192.0 mg L−1, 179.1 to 181.5 mg L−1, and 182.4 to 183.8 mg L−1 while δ13CDIC decreased from −6.6‰ to −9.7‰, −7.8‰ to −10.4‰, −9.7‰ to −10.0‰ and −9.9‰ to −10.0‰ in the Chaishitan (CST), Longtan (LT), Yantan (YT), and Dahua (DH) reservoirs, respectively. Our analyses suggest that primary production and organic matter degradation were two dominant processes in carbon evolution in the epilimnion and hypolimnion, respectively. However, there was no obvious spatial heterogeneity of solutes' concentration in the DH reservoir. Our results also suggested that cascade reservoirs had a regional damming effect and could be significantly weakened without damming or in daily regulated reservoirs. Furthermore, δ13CDIC had a significant positive relationship with the reservoir effect index (Ri), which was affected by hydraulic retention time and water temperature in the water column of reservoirs and is useful to evaluate the thermal stratification strength. This study highlights that dam constructions affected carbon transport and transformation significantly, and the degree of the damming effect on the carbon cycle can be expressed by Ri.
