Abstract:Materials with a quasi-one-dimensional stripy magnetic order often exhibit low crystal and magnetic symmetries, thus allowing the presence of various energy coupling terms and giving rise to macroscopic interplay between spin, charge, and phonon. In this work, we performed optical, electrical and magnetic characterizations combined with first-principles calculations on a van der Waals antiferromagnetic insulator chromium oxychloride (CrOCl). We detected the subtle phase transition behaviors of exfoliated CrOCl under varying temperature and magnetic field and clarified its controversial spin structures. We found that the antiferromagnetism and its air stability persist down to few-layer samples, making it a promising candidate for future 2D spintronic devices. Additionally, we verified the magnetoelastic coupling effect in CrOCl, allowing for the potential manipulation of the magnetic states via electric field or strain. These virtues of CrOCl provide us with an ideal platform for fundamental research on spin-charge, spin-phonon coupling, and spin-interactions.

Magnetism and Magneto-optical Effects in Bulk and Few-layer CrI$_3$: A Theoretical GGA + U Study

Abstract:The latest discovery of ferromagnetism in atomically thin films of semiconductors Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ and CrI$_3$ has unleashed numerous opportunities for fundamental physics of magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) limit and also for technological applications based on 2D magnetic materials. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical study of the magnetic, electronic, optical and magneto-optical(MO) properties of multilayers [monolayer(ML), bilayer and trilayer] and bulk CrI$_3$, based on the density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation plus on-site Coulomb repulsion scheme. Interestingly, all the structures are found to be single-spin ferromagnetic(FM) semiconductors. They all have a large out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy energy(MAE) of $\sim$0.5 meV/Cr. These large MAEs suppress transverse spin fluctuations and thus stabilize long-range magnetic orders at finite temperatures down to the ML limit. They also exhibit strong MO effects with their Kerr and Faraday rotation angles being comparable to that of best-known bulk MO materials. The shape and position of the main features in the optical and MO spectra are found to be nearly thickness-independent although the magnitude of Kerr rotation angles increases monotonically with the film thickness. Magnetic transition temperatures estimated based on calculated exchange coupling parameters, calculated optical conductivity, MO Kerr and Faraday rotation angles agree quite well with available experimental data. The calculated MAE as well as optical and MO properties are analyzed in terms of the calculated orbital-decomposed densities of states, band state symmetries and dipole selection rules. Our findings of large out-of-plane MAEs and strong MO effects in these single-spin FM semiconducting CrI$_3$ ultrathin films suggest that they will find valuable applications in semiconductor MO and spintronic nanodevices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials with strong in-plane anisotropy can make possible novel applications such as optospintronics and strain sensors. In this work, the strong in-plane optical anisotropy in 2D vdW antiferromagnet VOCl has been systematically investigated. The optical brightness and absorption coefficient exhibit evident periodic variation with the change of incident polarization, unveiling the strong in-plane anisotropic optical absorption. The Raman intensity in this material shows obvious dependence on the polarization angle of incident laser, demonstrating that the phonon properties possess strong in-plane anisotropy. Besides, we have also realized in-situ visualization of in-plane optical reflection anisotropy in this material. Moreover, the strong second harmonic generation (SHG) signal can only be detected when the incident polarization is along specific in-plane crystal orientations, illustrating the presence of strong in-plane nonlinear optical anisotropy. These findings will benefit the applications of VOCl in the field of polarization-dependent electronics and spintronics.

Abstract:Transition-metal oxyhalides MOX(M=Fe,Cr,V;O=oxygen,X=F,Cl,Br,I),an emerging type of two-dimensional(2D)van der Waals materials,have been both theoretically and experimentally demonstrated to possess unique electronic and magnetic properties.However,the intrinsic in-plane anisotropic properties of 2D VOCl still lacks in-depth re-search,especially optical anisotropy.Herein,a systematic Raman spectroscopic study is performed on VOCl single-crystal with different incident laser polarization at various temperatures.The polarized-dependent Raman scattering spectra reveal that the Ag mode of VOCl show a 2-lobed shape in parallel polarization configuration while a 4-lobed shape in vertical configuration.In addition,the temperature-dependent and thickness-dependent Raman scattering spectra confirm a rela-tively weak van der Waals interaction between each layers among VOCl single crystal.These findings might provide better understanding on the in-plane anisotropic phenomenon in VOCl layers,thus will accelate further application of 2D single crystals for nanoscale angle-dependent optoelectronics.

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals single crystals DyOBr and SmOCl have been grown by a flux method, and their anisotropic magnetic properties are reported. DyOBr orders antiferromagnetically at TN=9.5K with magnetic moments lying along a axis, similar as DyOCl. Its magnetic susceptibility shows an anomaly at T*=30K , possibly due to the crystal field effect. Furthermore, a 1/3 magnetization plateau is clearly observed under H∥a and H∥[110] , which might be a field-induced spin-flop phase or some exotic quantum magnetic state. On the other hand, isostructural SmOCl undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at TN=7.1K and exhibits a contrasting Ising-like perpendicular c -axis magnetic anisotropy, which could be well explained by our crystal field calculations. Both DyOBr and SmOCl are insulators with a band gap of ∼5eV , and our results suggest they are promising in building van der Waals heterostructures and applications in multifunctional devices. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevMaterials.8.074006 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:2D van der Waals (vdW) transition-metal oxyhalides with low symmetry, novel magnetism, and good stability provide a versatile platform for conducting fundamental research and developing spintronics. Antiferromagnetic FeOCl has attracted significant interest owing to its unique semiconductor properties and relatively high Néel temperature. Herein, good-quality centimeter-scale FeOCl single crystals are controllably synthesized using the universal temperature-oscillation chemical vapor transport (TO-CVT) method. The crystal structure, bandgap, and anisotropic behavior of the 2D FeOCl are explored in detail. The absorption spectrum and electrical measurements reveal that 2D FeOCl is a semiconductor with an optical bandgap of ≈2.1 eV and a resistivity of ≈10-1 Ω m at 295 K, and the bandgap increases with decreasing thickness. Strong in-plane optical and electrical anisotropies are observed in 2D FeOCl flakes, and the maximum resistance anisotropic ratio reaches 2.66 at 295 K. Additionally, the lattice vibration modes are studied through temperature-dependent Raman spectra and first-principles density functional calculations. A significant decrease in the Raman frequencies below the Néel temperature is observed, which results from the strong spin-phonon coupling effect in 2D FeOCl. This study provides a high-quality low-symmetry vdW magnetic candidate for miniaturized spintronics.

Abstract:The recent discovery of 2D magnets has revealed various intriguing phenomena due to the coupling between spin and other degrees of freedoms (such as helical photoluminescence, nonreciprocal SHG). Previous research on the spin-phonon coupling effect mainly focuses on the renormalization of phonon frequency. Here we demonstrate that the Raman polarization selection rules of optical phonons can be greatly modified by the magnetic ordering in 2D magnet CrI3. For monolayer samples, the dominant A(1g) peak shows an abnormally high intensity in the cross-polarization channel at low temperatures, which is forbidden by the selection rule based on the lattice symmetry. For the bilayer, this peak is absent in the cross-polarization channel for the layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) state and reappears when it is tuned to the ferromagnetic (FM) state by an external magnetic field. Our findings shed light on exploring the emergent magneto-optical effects in 2D magnets.

Abstract:Understanding the phase-transition processes of van der Waals (vdW) materials plays a vital role in their performance control and application development. Here, we investigate the structural transitions and Raman identifications of the monoclinic and orthorhombic phases of the layered vdW magnet CrI2. At present, the characterization of these two phases remains a challenge, and our first-principles calculations show that they each have a specific Raman spectrum, which proposes a reliable method to identify them. Moreover, we discover that CrI2 with orthorhombic phase exhibits both ferroelectricity and magnetism simultaneously due to its unique interlayer stacking order, indicating that it will provide a platform for the popular sliding ferroelectricity and multiferroicity.

Abstract:The pivotal role of magnetic anisotropy in stabilising two-dimensional (2D) magnetism has been widely accepted, however, direct correlation between magnetic anisotropy and long-range magnetic ordering in the 2D limit is yet to be explored. Here, using angle- and temperature-dependent tunnelling magnetoresistance, we report unprecedented metamagnetic phase transitions in atomically-thin CrOCl, triggered by magnetic easy-axis flipping instead of the conventional spin flop mechanism. Few-layer CrOCl tunnelling devices of various thicknesses consistently show an in-plane antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state with the easy axis aligned along the Cr-O-Cr direction (b-axis). Strikingly, with the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the easy-axis (H||c), magnetization of CrOCl does not follow the prevalent spin rotation and saturation pattern, but rather exhibits an easy-axis flipping from the in-plane to out-of-plane directions. Such magnetic anisotropy controlled metamagnetic phase transitions are manifested by a drastic upturn in tun- nelling current, which shows anomalous shifts towards higher H when temperature increases. By 2D mapping of tunnelling currents as a function of both temperature and H, we determine a unique ferrimagnetic state with a superstructure periodicity of five unit cells after the field-induced metam- agnetic transitions. The feasibility to control 2D magnetism by manipulating magnetic anisotropy may open enormous opportunities in spin-based device applications.
Anisotropic Electron-Hole Excitation and Large Linear Dichroism in Two-Dimensional Ferromagnet CrSBr with In-Plane Magnetization

Abstract:The observation of magnetic ordering in atomically thin CrI$_3$ and Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ monolayers has aroused intense interest in condensed matter physics and material science. Studies of van de Waals two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials are of both fundamental importance and application interest. In particular, exciton-enhanced magneto-optical properties revealed in CrI$_3$ and CrBr$_3$ monolayers have expanded the understanding of exciton physics in 2D materials. Unlike CrI$_3$ and CrBr$_3$ with out-of-plane magnetization, CrSBr has an in-plane magnetic moment, therefore, providing a good opportunity to study the magnetic linear dichroism and high-order magneto-optical effects. Here, based on the many-body perturbation method within density-functional theory, we have studied quasiparticle electronic structure, exciton, and optical properties in CrSBr monolayer. Strongly bounded exciton has been identified with the first bright exciton located at 1.35 eV, in good agreement with an experiment of photoluminescence (Nat. Mater. \textbf{20}, 1657 (2021)). Strong contrast in the optical absorption is found between the electric fields lying along the in-plane two orthogonal directions. In accordance with a typical and realistic experimental setup, we show that the rotation angle of linear polarized light, either reflected or transmitted, could be comparable with those revealed in black phosphorene. Such large linear dichroism arises mainly from anisotropic in-plane crystal structure. The magnetic contribution from the off-diagonal component of dielectric function to the linear dichroism in CrSBr is negligible. Our findings not only have revealed excitonic effect on the optical and magneto-optical properties in 2D ferromagnet CrSBr, but also have shown its potential applications in 2D optics and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Comparing with the widely known transitional metal based van der Waals (vdW) materials, rare-earth based ones are rarely explored in the research of intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. In this work, we report the physical properties of DyOCl, a rare-earth based vdW magnetic insulator with a direct band gap of ∼5.72eV. The magnetic order of bulk DyOCl is determined by neutron scattering as the A-type antiferromagnetic structure below the Néel temperature TN=10K. The large magnetic moment near 10.1 μB/Dy lies parallel to the a-axis with strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. At 2K, a moderate magnetic field (∼2T) applied along the easy axis generates spin-flip transitions and polarizes DyOCl to a ferromagnetic state. Density functional theory calculations reveal an extremely large magnetic anisotropy energy (−5850μeV/Dy) for DyOCl, indicating the great potential to realize magnetism in the 2D limit. Furthermore, the mechanical exfoliation of bulk DyOCl single crystals down to seven layers is demonstrated. Our findings suggest DyOCl is a promising material playground to investigate 2D f-electron magnetism and spintronic applications at the nanoscale.

Abstract:In two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials, the interplay between magnetism and electron correlation can give rise to new ground states and lead to novel transport and optical properties. A fundamental question in these materials is how the electron correlation manifests and interacts with the magnetic orders. In this study, we demonstrate that the recently discovered 2D antiferromagnetic material, CrSBr, is a Mott insulator, through the combined use of resonant and temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy techiniques, supplemented by dynamical mean-field theory analysis. Intriguingly, we found that as the system transitions from the antiferromagnetic to the paramagnetic phases, its Mott bands undergo a reconfiguration, and a coherent-incoherent crossover, driven by the dissolution of the magnetic order. Our findings reveal a distinctive evolution of band structure associated with magnetic phase transitions, shedding light on the investigation of intricate interplay between correlation and magnetic orders in strongly correlated van der Waals magnetic materials.

Abstract:Multiferroic materials have great potential in non-volatile devices for low-power and ultra-high density information storage, owing to their unique characteristic of coexisting ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orders. The effective manipulation of their intrinsic anisotropy makes it promising to control multiple degrees of the storage "medium". Here, we have discovered intriguing in-plane electrical and magnetic anisotropies in van der Waals (vdW) multiferroic CuCrP 2 S 6 . The uniaxial anisotropies of current rectifications, magnetic properties and magnon modes are demonstrated and manipulated by electric direction/polarity, temperature variation and magnetic field. More important, we have discovered the spin-flop transition corresponding to specific resonance modes, and determined the anisotropy parameters by consistent model fittings and theoretical calculations. Our work provides in-depth investigation and quantitative analysis of electrical and magnetic anisotropies with the same easy axis in vdW multiferroics, which will stimulate potential device applications of artificial bionic synapses, multi-terminal spintronic chips and magnetoelectric devices.

Abstract:Among the recently widely studied van der Waals layered magnets CrX3 (X=Cl, Br, I), CrCl3 monolayer (ML) is particularly puzzling as it is solely shown by experiments to have an in-plane magnetic easy axis and, furthermore, all of previous first-principles calculation results contradict this. Through systematical first-principles calculations,we unveil that its in-plane shape anisotropy that dominates over its weak perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy is responsible for the in-plane magnetic easy axis of CrCl3 ML. To tune the in-plane ferromagnetism of CrCl3 ML into the desirable perpendicular one, we propose substituting Cr with isovalent tungsten (W). We find that CrWCl6 has a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a high Curie temperature up to 76 K. Our work not only gives insight into understanding the two-dimensional ferromagnetism of van der Waals MLs but also sheds new light on engineering their performances for nanodevices.

Abstract:The discovery of 2D van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials is of great significance to explore intriguing 2D magnetic physics and develop innovative spintronic devices. In this work, a new quasi-1D vdW layered compound CrZr4 Te14 is successfully synthesized. Owing to the existence of 1D [CrTe2 ] and [ZrTe3 ] chains along the b-axis, CrZr4 Te14 crystals show strong anisotropy of phonon vibrations, electrical transport, and magnetism. Density functional theory calculations reveal the ferromagnetic (FM) coupling within the [CrTe2 ] chain, while the interchain and interlayer couplings are both weakly antiferromagnetic (AF). Notably, a large intrinsic negative magnetoresistance (nMR) of -56% is achieved at 2 K under 9 T, and the in-plane anisotropic factor of nMR can reach up to 8.2 in the CrZr4 Te14 device. The 1D FM chains and anisotropic nMR effect make CrZr4 Te14 an interesting platform for exploring novel polarization-sensitive spintronics.

Spin‐Lattice Coupled Metamagnetism in Frustrated van der Waals Magnet CrOCl

Abstract:Distinct from the established spin‐flop type metamagnetism, this work reports the unconventional spin‐lattice interlocked metamagnetism in few‐layer CrOCl down to the monolayer thickness. These unconventional metamagnetic transitions produce a unique field‐tunable ferrimagnetic phase with the magnetization axis freely rotated by magnetic field within an easy plane. The long‐range magnetic ordering in frustrated magnetic systems is stabilized by coupling magnetic moments to various degrees of freedom, for example, by enhancing magnetic anisotropy via lattice distortion. Here, the unconventional spin‐lattice coupled metamagnetic properties of atomically‐thin CrOCl, a van der Waals antiferromagnet with inherent magnetic frustration rooted in the staggered square lattice, are reported. Using temperature‐ and angle‐dependent tunneling magnetoconductance (TMC), in complementary with magnetic torque and first‐principles calculations, the antiferromagnetic (AFM)‐to‐ferrimagnetic (FiM) metamagnetic transitions (MTs) of few‐layer CrOCl are revealed to be triggered by collective magnetic moment flipping rather than the established spin‐flop mechanism, when external magnetic field (H) enforces a lattice reconstruction interlocked with the five‐fold periodicity of the FiM phase. The spin‐lattice coupled MTs are manifested by drastic jumps in TMC, which show anomalous upshifts at the transition thresholds and persist much higher above the AFM Néel temperature. While the MTs exhibit distinctive triaxial anisotropy, reflecting divergent magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the c‐axis AFM ground state, the resulting FiM phase has an a‐c easy plane in which the magnetization axis is freely rotated by H. At the 2D limit, such a field‐tunable FiM phase may provide unique opportunities to explore exotic emergent phenomena and novel spintronics devices.

Abstract:Polarization, a fundamental property of light, has been widely exploited from quantum physics to high-dimensional optics. Materials with intrinsic optical anisotropy, such as dichroism and birefringence, are central to light polarization control, including the development of polarizers, waveplates, mirrors and phase-matching elements. Therefore, materials with strong optical anisotropy have been long-sought. Recently, two-dimensional van der Waals crystals show high optical anisotropy but are mostly restricted to the out-of-plane direction, which is challenging to access in optical engineering. Here we report a two-dimensional van der Waals material, NbOCl 2 , that exhibits sharp electronic and structural contrast between its in-plane orthogonal axes. Colossal in-plane optical anisotropy—linear dichroism (up to 99% in ultraviolet) and birefringence (0.26–0.46 within a wide visible–near-infrared transparency window)—is experimentally demonstrated. Our findings provide a powerful and easy-to-access recipe for ultracompact integrated polarization industries.

Abstract:Abstract The discovery of two-dimensional systems hosting intrinsic magnetic order represents a seminal addition to the rich landscape of van der Waals materials. CrI 3 is an archetypal example, where the interdependence of structure and magnetism, along with strong light-matter interactions, provides a new platform to explore the optical control of magnetic and vibrational degrees of freedom at the nanoscale. However, the nature of magneto-structural coupling on its intrinsic ultrafast timescale remains a crucial open question. Here, we probe magnetic and vibrational dynamics in bulk CrI 3 using ultrafast optical spectroscopy, revealing spin-flip scattering-driven demagnetization and strong transient exchange-mediated interactions between lattice vibrations and spin oscillations. The latter yields a coherent spin-coupled phonon mode that is highly sensitive to the driving pulse’s helicity in the magnetically ordered phase. Our results elucidate the nature of ultrafast spin-lattice coupling in CrI 3 and highlight its potential for applications requiring high-speed control of magnetism at the nanoscale.
