Abstract:Driven by health care reform and the advent of the private sector in the late 1980s, and by commitments made to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Vietnam is faced with a need to increase the regulation and training of its health care professionals. Previously, a diploma from an accredited health professional school was sufficient to practice for a lifetime. Legislation has recently been passed that will institute a licensing system, will require continuing medical education (CME) to maintain the license, and will probably place a large burden on the health professional schools and training institutes to provide CME. Supported by international nongovernmental organizations and foreign universities, the medical universities in Vietnam are responding and are preparing for their new and expanded role.

Abstract:Introduction: Prevalence of oral, metabolic, circulatory, and nutritional diseases has tended to increase globally. As these diseases have common contributing factors, such as unhealthy diets, evaluating their epidemiological trends and the relation between them is relevant. In Colombia, the Ministry of Health records the frequency of consultation for these diseases through the Integrated Social Protection Information System. It facilitates the evaluation of their epidemiological behavior at the population level. Aim: To analyze and correlate the burden of oral diseases (caries and periodontitis) with respect to nutritional, circulatory and metabolic pathologies, as well as their relationships with socioeconomic indices in Colombian regions from 2016 to 2023. Methods: This study analyzes retrospective data collected between 2016 and 2023 by the National Health Registry in Colombia (SISPRO) according to the ICD-10. Sociodemographic data and the number of disease consultations were extracted. The number of consultations for oral diseases was correlated with systemic pathologies, socioeconomic indices through the Spearman test. Associations were explored via multiple linear regressions. A Principal Component Analyses (PCA) was conducted to identify patterns between socioeconomic, oral and systemic disease variables, as well as to reduce the complexity of the analysis by creating clusters that capture the greatest possible variability in the data. Results: The average number of consultations per biennium was 24.550.435 being the highest number for 2018-2019. The highest percentage of consultations was related to extensive caries, followed by chronic gingivitis. Moreover, consultations for oral diseases were found to correlate with systemic pathologies. All socioeconomic indices were associated with caries and/or periodontal diseases. This study is the first in Colombia that uses national data on diagnoses assigned to medical and dental consultations. PCA revealed a clustering pattern of pathologies suggesting that they are highly associated one to each other. Conclusion: Correlations between consultations for oral and systemic diseases stratified by life cycle and socioeconomic indices highlight the importance of conducting epidemiological and public health characterizations and their associations. Identifying these factors is imperative in the prevention and management of both diseases.
Prevalence of periodontitis among the adolescents aged 15-18 years in Mangalore City: An epidemiological and microbiological study

Abstract:Background: Periodontitis is a group of inflammatory diseases affecting the supporting tissues of the tooth. Both aggressive periodontitis (AP) and chronic periodontitis (CP) have a multifactorial etiology, with dental plaque as the initiating factor. However, the initiation and progression of periodontitis are influenced by other factors including microbiologic, social and behavioral and systemic and genetic factors. The prevalence of periodontal diseases varies in different regions of the world according to the definition of periodontitis and the study population, and there are indications that they may be more prevalent in developing than in developed countries. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the adolescents of 15-18 years of age in Mangalore City. One thousand one hundred students aged 15-18 years were selected for the study from the schools and colleges in Mangalore City using a convenient sampling method. The prevalence of AP and CP were assessed in the study using a community periodontal index. Students who were diagnosed clinically and radiographically were subjected to microbiological examination to confirm AP. Results: A high prevalence of gingivitis and periodontitis was found in students belonging to the lower socioeconomic status group compared with the higher socioeconomic groups, which were associated with poor oral hygiene habits. The prevalence of AP was found to be 0.36% and that of CP was found to be 1.5%. Conclusion: Oral diseases have a significant impact on the social and psychological aspects of an individual's life. Exposure to risk factors, such as age, low socio-economic status, poor education, low dental care utilization, poor oral hygiene levels, smoking, psychosocial stress and genetic factors are significantly associated with an increased risk of periodontitis among adolescents. Although genetic factors play a major role in periodontitis, the treatment outcome will still be influenced by environmental and behavioral factors.
Salivary markers of oxidative stress and periodontal pathogens in patients with periodontitis from Santander, Colombia

Abstract:Introduction: Periodontitis affects more than 20% of the Latin American population. Oxidative markers are associated with greater progression of periodontitis; therefore, its role in pathogenesis should be studied. Objective: To determine the prevalence of the main oral bacteria and viruses associated with periodontitis and estimate the total antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxidation in saliva from patients with periodontitis. Materials and methods: We conducted systemically a cross-sectional study in 101 healthy subjects, 87 of whom had been diagnosed with periodontitis (P), according to the criteria of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Periodontology, and 14 without periodontal pockets as controls (C). In subgingival samples, major viruses and dental pathogenic bacteria were identified using PCR techniques. The levels of total antioxidant capacity and malon-di-aldehyde (MDA) were determined by spectrophotometry in samples of unstimulated saliva. Results: The mean of periodontal depth pocket and clinical attachment loss in patients with periodontitis was 5.6 ± 1.7 and 6.1 ± 3.1 mm, respectively. The most prevalent microorganisms were Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (32.5%) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (18.6%). The patients from rural areas showed a higher percentage of A. actinomycetemcomitans (urban: 17.9% vs. rural: 48.9%, p=0.0018). In patients with periodontitis, the frequency of EBV, HSV1 and 2, and HCMV genes was 2.3%. Periodontitis patients had higher levels of MDA (P: 2.1 ± 1.5; C: 0.46 ± 0.3 μmol/g protein; p=0.0001) and total antioxidant capacity (P: 0.32 ± 0.2; C: 0.15 ± 0.1 mM; p< 0.0036). Oxidative markers showed no modifications due to the presence of periodontopathic bacteria. Conclusions: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans was the most prevalent bacteria; its presence did not modify the levels of oxidative markers in the saliva of patients with periodontitis.

Abstract:Background . Periodontal disease is a public health problem and is strongly associated with systemic diseases; however, its worldwide distribution is not fully understood. Objective . To evaluate global data of periodontal disease: (1) among adolescents, adults, and older population and (2) in low-, middle-, and high-income countries. Methods . This ecological study included data of periodontal disease from the World Health Organization’s data bank which are based on the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN code: 0 = no disease; 1 = bleeding on probing; 2 = calculus; 3 = periodontal pocket (PD) 4-5 mm; 4 = PD (6+ mm). Age- and income-related periodontal disease inequalities were evaluated across the globe. Results . Compared with 9.3% of adults and 9.7% of older persons, 21.2% of adolescents had no periodontal disease ( P = 0.005 ). Nearly 18.8% of adolescents compared with 8.9% of adults and 5% of older persons had bleeding on probing ( P ≤ 0.001 ). Similarly, 50.3% of adolescents, 44.6% of adults, and 31.9% older persons demonstrated the occurrence of calculus ( P = 0.01 ). On the other hand, older persons had the highest prevalence of PD 4-5 mm and PD 6+ mm than adults and adolescents ( P ≤ 0.001 ). The distribution of periodontitis (CPITN code 3 + 4) in adults differed significantly in low- (28.7%), lower-middle- (10%), upper-middle- (42.5%), and high-income countries (43.7%) ( P = 0.04 ). However, no significant differences in periodontitis (CPITN code 3 + 4) were observed in adolescents and older persons in low- to high-income countries. Conclusions . Within the limitations of data, this study found that the distribution of periodontal disease increases with age. Periodontitis was the most common in older persons and in population from high-income countries.

Abstract:Aim The occurrence of periodontal diseases is still to be determined in large samples of major Brazilian cities. This study aimed to assess the periodontal status of adults from Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, using periodontitis definitions by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Periodontology (CDC/AAP) and the recently published ACES 2018 Classification Framework. Materials and Methods A multi‐stage probability sampling technique was applied to draw individuals aged 18 or older. A total of 566 individuals underwent a full‐mouth periodontal examination. Periodontitis cases were defined according to the CDC/AAP and the ACES 2018 Classification Framework. Non‐periodontitis cases were classified as healthy or gingivitis. The agreement between the two definitions was calculated. Results Periodontal health was present in 33.6% and 13.8% of individuals, and gingivitis was found in 11.7% and 7.5%, according to CDC/AAP and ACES, respectively. Mild, moderate and severe periodontitis (CDC/AAP) were present in 2.1%, 33.4% and 19.1% of individuals, respectively. Using ACES, 34.3% had Stages I/II and 43.3% had Stages III/IV. The occurrence of periodontitis was higher when a subgroup of individuals aged 30+ were analysed, ranging from 69.6% (CDC/AAP) to 90.1% (ACES). CDC/AAP and ACES agreement for health, gingivitis and periodontitis accounted for 68.8% of the observations. Conclusions Periodontal diseases affect more than 66% of the population aged 18+ years. Classic definition by the CDC/AAP and the recently published ACES Framework yielded moderate agreement.

Abstract:Aim To assess the prevalence of severe periodontitis based on the population‐based CONSTANCES cohort using a validated self‐reported questionnaire. Materials and Methods Individuals were selected from the adult population in France using a random sampling scheme. Analyses were restricted to those invited in 2013–2014 who completed the periodontal health questionnaire at the 2017 follow‐up. The risk of severe periodontitis was assessed using the periodontal screening score (PESS) and weighting coefficients were applied to provide representative results in the general French population. Results The study included 19,859 participants (9204 men, mean age: 52.8 ± 12.6 years). Based on a PESS ≥ 5, 7106 participants were at risk of severe periodontitis, corresponding to a weighted prevalence of 31.6% (95% confidence interval: 30.6%–32.7%). This prevalence was higher among participants aged 55 and over, those with lower socio‐economic status as well as current smokers, e‐cigarette users and heavy drinkers. Among individuals at risk of severe periodontitis, only 18.8% (17.3%–20.4%) thought they had gum disease, although 50.5% (48.6%–52.5%) reported that their last dental visit was less than 6 months. Conclusions The present survey indicates that (1) self‐reported severe periodontitis is highly prevalent with marked disparities between groups in the general French adult population, and (2) periodontitis could frequently be under‐diagnosed given the low awareness.

Abstract:Introduction: Periodontal disease is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory disease, so knowledge about this disease is important for health professionals for an assertive and early diagnosis. Objective: Determine the level of knowledge about periodontal health in Health Sciences students at a private university in Lima-Perú. Materials and methods: Through a descriptive and cross-sectional study, 200 students from the Faculty of Health Sciences were evaluated. The sample size was obtained using a proportion estimation formula. The level of knowledge about periodontal health was measured using a specific virtual and self-applicable questionnaire, which was fully validated. University students of legal age and who signed the informed consent were included. This consisted of 16 questions about the causes, signs, prevention habits and relationship with systemic diseases related to periodontal disease. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (absolute and relative frequencies) and means and averages for age. Results: The level of knowledge was medium in 38%, high in 32.5% and low in 29.5% of the students surveyed. 96.5% knew that periodontal disease is preventable; However, 91.5% do not know what its main clinical sign is. Conclusions: The use of a self-applicable and specific questionnaire is beneficial to evaluate and measure knowledge about periodontal health, and the Health Sciences students evaluated have a medium level of knowledge about periodontal health.

Abstract:Periodontitis defined by the presence of pockets ≥6 mm is associated with high risk of cardiovascular diseases, estimated with SCORE tool, in a representative sample of 4224 Spanish working subjects. This association is independent of common risk factors (sex, age, and smoking status). Aims Periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are highly prevalent non‐communicable diseases, sharing an inflammatory pathogenesis and common risk factors. The objective of the present research is to assess the association between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease risk in a representative sample of the Spanish‐employed population. Methods Cross‐sectional data were obtained between 2008 and 2011 in the Workers' Oral Health (WORALTH) epidemiological study. Periodontal examinations were based on the evaluation of clinical attachment loss (CAL) and community periodontal index (CPI). Participants also underwent a medical check‐up and answered a comprehensive health questionnaire. With this information, participants were categorized into three levels of CVD risk using the systemic coronary risk estimation (SCORE) algorithm for low‐risk European countries. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were determined with multiple logistic regression models for the association between periodontal status and CVD risk. Results Data from 4224 individuals were analyzed. The overall prevalence of high CVD risk (SCORE ≥ 5%) was 5.1%. Abstract:Background: To describe the prevalence and severity of periodontitis in patients attending the Periodontics Service of the Cocody University Hospital at Abidjan. Methods: This retrospective observational study reviewed records of patients aged 20-80 years who attended the Periodontics Service between January 2014 and December 2018. Periodontitis was diagnosed, according to the 2018 EFP/AAP new classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. Chi-square test, 1-factor Anova test, and logistic regression were performed for analysis. Results: A total number of 596 patients were included. The mean age was 44.94 ± 14.34 years and 59.20% of were males. 2 (0.40%) patients were classified as Stage I, 221 (37.08%) as Stage II, and 373 (62.58%) as Stage III/V; the extent of periodontitis was generalized in 39.77% of patients. PD ≥ 6 mm, missing teeth ≥ 5 and mobile teeth were present in 47.15%, 26.35% and 25.50% of the sample, respectively.Severity of periodontitis were associated with age (p < 0.001), socio-economic status (p=0.001), diabetes (p < 0.001), missing teeth (p < 0.001) and smoking (p=0.009). Age (OR= 1.59, 95% CI: 1.11-2.26) and missing teeth (OR= 2.31, 95% CI: 1.08-4.89) were identified as independent risks indicators. Conclusion: The prevalence and severity of periodontitis were high. Risks indicators identified may allow early detection and management of groups at high risk in Côte d'Ivoire.
Relationship Between Low Education and Poor Periodontal Status among Mexican Adults Aged ≥50 Years

Abstract:Purpose: To examine the association between educational level and the presence of periodontal disease in adults ages ≥ 50 years in Mexico. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 2098 Mexican adults, using data from the annual reports of the Epidemiological Monitoring System for Oral Pathologies from 2019-2022. Data were collected on sociodemographic characteristics such as gender, age, educational level, oral hygiene, and diabetes. Periodontal status was evaluated using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) and was classified into: CPI = 0 (healthy); CPI = 1 (bleeding on probing); CPI = 2 (calculus); and CPI = 3 or 4 (pocket depth ≥ 4 mm). A multinomial regression model was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence intervals (CI), using periodontal status as the result. Results: 39.9% of subjects presented periodontal pockets of ≥ 4 mm, 20.8% presented calculus, and 12.8% presented bleeding, while only 26.4% were classified as healthy. A low level of education (≤ 9 years) (OR = 4.84; p 0.001), age ≥ 65 years (OR = 1.33; p = 0.025), poor oral hygiene (OR = 6.86; p 0.001), smoking (OR = 1.51; p = 0.025), and diabetes (OR = 1.73; p 0.001) were statistically significantly associated with the presence of periodontal pockets ≥ 4 mm. Conclusions: A low level of education is associated with worse periodontal status in adults aged 50 years or more. These findings reiterate the importance of implementing effective strategies and the incorporation of interventions for improving the access to and quality of services targeted at aging communities.

Abstract:Background: The objective of this study was to examine the hypothesis that periodontal disease is associated with chronic non-communicable diseases. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the periodontal health condition of the population, based on the community periodontal index, as well as the number of missing teeth and the presence of systemic health conditions. We quantified the association between oral health and the presence of chronic diseases using simple logistic regression, adjusting for confounding factors including age, smoking, and overweight. Results: The study population consisted of 334 volunteers, aged between 19 and 81 years. In patients over 45 years old, periodontal disease was found to be significantly associated with hypertension and diabetes. Furthermore, in female patients, periodontal disease was significantly associated with hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that periodontal disease is positively and significantly associated with both arterial hypertension and diabetes, independent of potential confounding factors.

Abstract:This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and extent of bleeding on probing and calculus in 12-year-old schoolchildren of Quito, Ecuador, and evaluate the associated factors. We conducted an epidemiological survey with a representative sample of 1,100 12-year-old schoolchildren from public schools in the urban area of Quito, Ecuador. We assessed the periodontal health using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). The prevalence and extent of the periodontal condition was based on the presence of at least one site with bleeding on probing (BOP), and the presence of dental calculus was also evaluated. We used univariate and multiple multilevel Poisson regression analyses to verify the association between the independent variables and the number of sextants with BOP and calculus. The prevalence of BOP and calculus was 92% and 69.9%, respectively. The adjusted mean of the affected sextants was 4.3 and 2.2 for BOP and calculus, respectively. The mother's schooling and malocclusion were associated with the number of sextants with bleeding. The mother's schooling and dental caries experience were associated with calculus. Gingival bleeding and the presence of dental calculus are highly prevalent in 12-year-old schoolchildren from Quito. Gingival bleeding is associated with maternal education and malocclusion, and dental calculus is associated with maternal education and dental caries.

Abstract:Background: There are limited data about the epidemiology and risk factors/indicators of gingivitis, aggressive periodontitis (AgP) and chronic periodontitis (CP) in Jordan. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk indicators of gingivitis, AgP and CP. Methods: A sample of 595 subjects was randomly selected from subjects escorting out-patients attending a Medical Center, a Dental Teaching Hospital, and 2 private dental clinics. The socio-demographic variables, oral hygiene habits, income, smoking and Body Mass Index (BMI) were recorded. Full mouth periodontal examination was performed, and radiographs were taken for sites with probing depth > 3 mm. Results: About 76% had gingivitis, 2.2% had AgP and 5.5% had CP. Periodontitis was more frequent among males than females with a M: F ratio of 1.6:1 and the prevalence increased with age. Subjects who reported not using a tooth brush, smokers and subjects with BMI > 30 kg/m2 had significantly higher prevalence of periodontitis. The risk for periodontitis was greater among subjects who reported positive family history and subjects with ≤ 12 years of education. Conclusions: This is the first study to report on the prevalence of gingivitis, CP and AgP in North Jordanian. Age, low education, low frequency of tooth brushing and family history were significantly associated with increased risk of periodontitis.

Abstract:Background/purpose: Information on the systemic medication profiles of patients with periodontitis is limited. Therefore, this retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the relationship between the severity and rate of progression of periodontitis and systemic medication intake using a database of patients who attended the Clinic of Periodontics of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Costa Rica. Methods: Electronic health records of patients diagnosed with periodontitis based on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions (2017) were evaluated. Individuals were further categorized based on the severity (stage) and rate of progression (grade). Data extracted from the patient records included age, sex, and self-reported medication intake. Results: In total, 930 records were included. Most of the studied population was middle-aged (36-64 years old); 43.01% were male, and 56.99% were female. Four hundred and fifty-seven patients (49.14%) reported taking at least one systemic medication for a chronic condition. Regarding the periodontal treatment phase, 62.37% underwent steps 1-3, and 37.63% underwent step 4. The most common systemic medications taken were for cardiovascular diseases (42.28%), followed by medications for diabetes (14.46%) and neurologic disorders (14.46%). Most patients (59.35%) were diagnosed with Stage III periodontitis. Grade B (48.28%) was the most prevalent. Calcium channel blockers demonstrated a disease severity-dependent association with the periodontal stage (p = 0.021). In addition, systemic medications for diabetes mellitus were associated with periodontal disease severity and rate of progression (all Ps < 0.05). Conclusions: This study provides indirect evidence of the association between systemic diseases and periodontitis. The positive association between medications used to treat diabetes and the severity and rate of progression of periodontitis may be due to the underlying disease rather than the medications per se.
Periodontal condition is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes and premature rupture of membranes in low-income pregnant women in Bogota, Colombia: a case-control study

Abstract:Objectives: To assess the periodontal condition as a factor associated with adverse perinatal outcomes, premature rupture of membranes (PRM), and preeclampsia in low-income pregnant women treated at public hospitals in Bogotá, Colombia.Methods: Pregnant women with preterm birth (PTB) and low birth weight (LBW) or both conditions (n = 107/428), or only PTB (n = 73/292) or LBW (n = 74/296) or with PRM (n = 98/392) or preeclampsia (n = 76/304) in a ratio of four controls for each case, coming from three hospitals of the public Northern Network of Bogotá, Colombia were studied. Sociodemographic, perinatal adverse outcome history, antenatal care, chronic infections, periodontal condition, threatened abortion, bleeding in the second half of pregnancy, oligohydramnios, diabetes, gestational diabetes, alcohol consumption, hypertension, smoking, alcohol during pregnancy were determined. Logistic regression was conducted to establish factors associated to perinatal adverse outcomes. Multiple correspondence analysis was conducted as secondary analysis.Results: Threatened abortion, absence of antenatal care, hypertension, chronic infections, and periodontal condition were the most important factors associated with perinatal adverse outcomes. The presence of periodontal pockets was associated with LBW OR 2.52 (IC95% 1.36-4.70), PTB OR 2.04 (IC95% 1.10-3.64), PTB-LBW or both OR 2.08 (IC95% 1.18-3.31), PRM OR 2.04 (IC95% 1.17-3.56). Periodontal pockets presence was not associated with preeclampsia. Multiple correspondence analyses showed high correlation between PRM with chronic infection and presence of periodontal pockets.Conclusions: Periodontal condition is a factor independent of other important risk factors for a perinatal adverse outcome and PRM. Prevention of periodontal disease should be included in preconception and prenatal care programs.

Abstract:Aim To evaluate the frequency of periodontal disease and its relationship with age and the presence of metabolic syndrome in a group of patients from Sierra Gorda, Mexico. Methodology A descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective study was carried out in 208 patients between 20 and 79 years of age, of both sexes. Prior to the epidemiological survey, a Dentist Surgeon was calibrated (Kappa=0.91; p=001). To measure the presence of periodontal disease (PD), the Community Periodontal Index (IPC) was collected. To measure the association between the study variables, the Likelihood Ratio values were calculated because in all cases some of the observed values were ≤ 5, considering a confidence level of 95%. Results Both Diabetes and Dyslipidemia were the two comorbidities that occurred most frequently, observing that the older, the higher the probability of finding subjects with some type of comorbidity ( p=0.001 ). In patients who presented comorbidities, a higher frequency of moderate to severe gingivitis and mild periodontitis and cases of moderate to severe periodontitis were observed. Conclusion It is confirmed how aging and comorbidities are factors of great impact in the deterioration of tissues and dental support structures, which leads to a greater vulnerability to PD and its complications.

Abstract:Introducción. El parto prematuro es un problema médico, social y económico importante, causa gran mortalidad y morbilidad neonatal, tiene un impacto importante en el sistema de salud y afecta la calidad de vida de las familias. El peso de los recién nacidos de madres con enfermedad periodontal es significativamente menor en comparación con los de madres no afectadas por esta enfermedad bucal. Este resultado adverso se considera un problema de salud pública global según los datos epidemiológicos.Objetivo. Determinar la asociación entre la prevalencia de parto prematuro y la enfermedad periodontal en Bolivia, Chile y Colombia entre el 2000 y el 2020.Materiales y métodos. Este estudio ecológico consideró las poblaciones de mujeres de Bolivia, Chile y Colombia, y la prevalencia de partos prematuros y enfermedad periodontal, discriminadas por grupos de edad. El estudio abarcó el período entre el 2000 y el 2020. La estrategia de búsqueda con la herramienta de investigación del Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation incluyó prevalencia, grupos de edad, años entre 2000 y 2020, causas de parto prematuro y enfermedad periodontal, contexto y ubicaciones, mujeres y tasas. El análisis estadístico incluyó una regresión lineal simple entre parto prematuro y enfermedad periodontal para cada grupo de edad dentro de cada país. Resultados. Las tasas de partos prematuros fueron mayores en el grupo de 15 a 19 años (Bolivia: 697.563, Chile: 844.864, Colombia: 804.126). La prevalencia de la enfermedad periodontal aumentó con la edad, particularmente en el grupo de 45 a 49 años (Bolivia: 22’077.854, Chile: 34’297.901, Colombia: 32'032,830). Según los grupos de edad, la regresión lineal fue estadísticamente significativa (p < 0,001) para todos los grupos evaluados de la población boliviana, en los grupos mayores de 30 años para las colombianas y solo en el grupo de 15 a 19 años para las mujeres chilenas.Conclusión. Se encontró asociación entre el parto prematuro y la enfermedad periodontal en todos los grupos de edad en Bolivia, solo en el grupo de 15 a 19 años en Chile, y de 30 años y más en Colombia en el período evaluado de 20 años.

Abstract:Dental plaque removal and the understanding of risk factors, risk indicators and social determinants are important components in the prevention of periodontal disease. Periodontal diseases and dental caries are largely preventable conditions, but require a "common risk factor approach" with non-communicable diseases with the purpose of improving their prevention and control, and positive impact on health. The aim of this consensus was to identify the evidence and gaps in periodontal prevention in Latin American, and to propose individual and collective recommendations for the population, health professionals, dental practice and government. The prevention of periodontal diseases in Latin America has mainly been focused on oral hygiene instruction, use of toothbrushes and interproximal devices, but in some patients, it is necessary to use adjuncts to these measures, such as antimicrobial and/or probiotic products that are backed by broad scientific evidence. Some evidence has shown that there are inadequate knowledge, attitudes and practices among patients, dentist and other health professionals. The prevention of periodontal diseases and caries should be adopted as a healthy lifestyle routine, because of their local and systemic effects. Recently, new empowerment strategies have been proposed in order to generate behavioral changes. Periodontal diseases can often be prevented, or controlled by joined efforts between government health systems, scientific associations, universities, health professionals, private companies and communities. In conclusion, the relations between periodontal diseases, caries, healthy lifestyles and NCD's offer an ideal opportunity to change Latin American prevention strategies at both the individual level and population levels.
