Abstract:Glass ceramic has been regarded as an alternative to traditional bulk materials such as single crystal and transparent ceramic. The nucleation/growth behavior of glass ceramic via crystallization is an important topic but is seldom studied so far. In the present work, a series of La3+-based oxyfluoride aluminosilicate glasses are designed to understand their nanocrystallization processes upon heating. Impressively, controllable LaF3, α-NaLaF4 and β-NaLaF4 phase-competitive crystallization in glasses is achieved and structural/spectroscopic characterizations confirm the key role of Al/Si ratio to determine the release of Na+ ions from glass network to participate in crystallization and phase transformation. Furthermore, the developed glass ceramics are evidenced to be ideal hosts for lanthanide dopants (such as Eu3+ and Yb3+/Er3+), which can effectively incorporate into the precipitated fluoride crystal lattices by substituting La3+ ions. As a consequence, incoherent LED-excitable upconverting devices are constructed to demonstrate their promising application as emitting media in display.

Abstract:Yb/Er doped hexagonal beta-NaLnF(4) (Ln = Gd, Y, Lu) are regarded as the most efficient green upconversion (UC) materials. Unfortunately, beta-NaLnF(4) is quite difficult to grow as monocrystal owing to cubic-to-hexagonal phase transition during cooling. As an alternative, herein a nanocrystallization controllable strategy to synthesize monodisperse whole-family beta-NaLnF(4) (from NaLaF4 to NaLuF4) embedded bulky glass ceramics is reported. A series of structural and spectroscopic characterizations indicate that Na content and Al/Si ratio are the most important factors to determine phase-selective NaLnF(4) crystallization in the aluminosilicate oxyfluoride glasses. Impressively, such nanocomposites are evidenced to be ideal hosts for upconversion luminescence of Yb3+/Er3+ dopants and as the proof-of-concept experiments, their applications in a random laser and incoherent LED-excitable upconverting device as emitting media are demonstrated. It is expected that this study will provide a deep understanding for controllable crystallization in glass and extend the practical applications of glass ceramics in optoelectronic fields.

Abstract:Controllable growth of nanocrystals (NCs) in optical glasses is essential to impart photonic functions for demanded applications. Here, Ce3+-doped KLaF4 and LaF3 fluoride NCs are controllably precipitated in a fluorosilicate glass via adjusting the duration and temperature of thermal treatment. The presence of phase separation in the precursor glass (PG) is derived from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and serves as the driving factor for the crystallization of fluoride NCs. The phase separation of PG, NCs distribution, microscopic morphology and particle size of NCs precipitated in the nano-glass composites (nano-GCs) are investigated by analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Structural and spectroscopic characterizations confirm the influence of the thermal treatment on the crystalline species in the nano-GCs. The developed nano-GCs exhibit intense X-ray excited luminescence with an excellent linearity with the X-ray dosage and a good thermal stability, making them suitable for radiation detection and medical imaging applications.

Abstract:Transparent crystalline yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG; Y3Al5O12) is a dominant host material used in phosphors, scintillators, and solid state lasers. However, YAG single crystals and transparent ceramics face several technological limitations including complex, time-consuming, and costly synthetic approaches. Here we report facile elaboration of transparent YAG-based ceramics by pressureless nano-crystallization of Y2O3–Al2O3 bulk glasses. The resulting ceramics present a nanostructuration composed of YAG nanocrystals (77 wt%) separated by small Al2O3 crystalline domains (23 wt%). The hardness of these YAG-Al2O3 nanoceramics is 10% higher than that of YAG single crystals. When doped by Ce3+, the YAG-Al2O3 ceramics show a 87.5% quantum efficiency. The combination of these mechanical and optical properties, coupled with their simple, economical, and innovative preparation method, could drive the development of technologically relevant materials with potential applications in wide optical fields such as scintillators, lenses, gem stones, and phosphor converters in high-power white-light LED and laser diode.

Abstract:Functional nanocrystal-containing materials have been a hot topic in recent years. However, few researches have focused on functional nanocrystals contained in optical glass fibers. In this research, transparent CaF2 glass-ceramic was prepared by a melt-quenching method. Greatly enhanced upconversion luminescence was observed after heat treatment. By applying a novel method called melt-in-tube, precursor fiber free of crystals was fabricated at the drawing temperature where the clad was softened while the core was melted. Glass-ceramic fiber with fiber core containing Yb3+-Er3+ codoped CaF2 nanocrystals was obtained after heat treatment at a relatively low temperature. Electron probe micro-analyzer measurement shows no obvious element diffusion between the core and clad. Greatly enhanced upconversion emission was detected in the glass-ceramic fiber excited by a 980 nm laser, suggesting the developed glass-ceramic fiber is a promising material for upconversion laser.

Abstract:Transparent Y3Al5O12-based polycrystalline ceramics with excessive Al2O3 composition (Al2O3-26 mol%Y2O3, AY26) have been demonstrated as potential host materials for phosphor applications. However, the crystallization mechanism of AY26 glass has not been thoroughly investigated so far. In this work, the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of AY26 glass was experimentally analyzed. The AY26 glass depicts high activation energy and crystallization mechanism of volume nucleation followed by three-dimensional crystal growth mode. Based on the analysis, a novel highly transparent YAG-Al2O3 nanoceramic material was elaborated at lower temperature of 963 ℃ by using pressureless glass crystallization. The biphase nanoceramic is characterized by the structure of YAG nanocrystals surrounded with homogeneous thin Al2O3 layers. It is extremely transparent from visible to mid-infrared region, particularly the transmittance can reach the theoretical limit of YAG transparent ceramic in NIR and MIR regions. Besides, it has almost same hardness of 21 GPa with YAG single crystal and YAG transparent ceramic.

Abstract:Tremendous enhancement of optical emission efficiency was achieved in fluorosilicate glasses by growing lanthanide doped fluoride nanocrystals embedded in oxide glass matrix. The formation mechanism of the microstructure was elucidated by combining solid-state NMR, scanning TEM, EDX map, and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. The results reveal that the growth of fluoride nanocrystals in fluorosilicate glass was originated from fluoride phase separation. Atomic level structures of phase separation of fluoride-rich regions in oxyfluoride glasses matrix were observed from both EDX maps and MD simulations, and it was found that, while silicon exclusively coordinated by oxygen and alkali earth ions and lanthanide mainly coordinated by fluorine, aluminum played the role of linking the two fluoride glass and oxide glass regions by bonding to both oxygen and fluoride ions.

Abstract:Transparent glass-ceramics have particular properties compared with their precursor glasses, and have promising potential applications in many fields. Titanium-relative phases are frequently employed as nucleation agents for crystallization of glass-ceramics, and rarely been precipitated as functional nanocrystalline phases in glass-ceramics. In this work, transparent glass-ceramics containing Zn2TiO4 and/or α-Zn2SiO4 nanocrystals are investigated. It turns out that Vickers hardness of these glass-ceramics increases with the precipitation of Zn2TiO4 and α-Zn2SiO4 nanocrystals. Despite the blocking effect of nanocrystals precipitated in the glass-ceramics, structural and compositional modification of the residual glass induced by the precipitation of these nanocrystalline phases facilitates the K-Na ion-exchange, leading to the enhanced depth of layer and further improved Vickers hardness of the glass-ceramics.

Crystallization control toward colorless cerium-doped scintillating glass

Abstract:The construction of cerium-doped materials is of great technological importance for various applications, including smart lighting, biological shielding and high-energy ray and particle detection. A major challenge is the efficient prevention of the undesired colorization after cerium doping. Here we present the nanocrystallization method for constructing colorless cerium-doped glass with extremely high cerium concentration (15 mol%). The structure and optical characterizations confirm that the notable color change of glass is associated with the precipitation of CeF3 crystalline phase during heat-treatment. The chemical state investigation shows that most of cerium ions exist in the form of Ce3+ in both the glass and glass-ceramic samples. The chemical environment study indicates a dramatic change in the local structure unit from -Ce-O- to -Ce-F-, which is believed to dominate the decoloring phenomenon in cerium doped glass. As a result, a significant improvement in the ultraviolet excited luminescence (~35 times enhancement in intensity) and scintillating performance can be achieved, pointing to potential applications in X-ray detection.

Abstract:Transparent nanoceramics are attracting more and more interests recently, while it is practically difficult to prepare by conventional sintering process because of undesirable grain growth. In this study a new method of amorphous sintering followed by controlled crystallization (ASCC) was developed, and transparent LaAlO3/t-ZrO2 nanoceramics were prepared as examples. Glass powders from Al2O3–La2O3–ZrO2 (ALZ) were synthesized, sintered, and then converted to nanoceramics by post-heat-treatment. The processes of hot pressing and controlled crystallization were investigated in detail. The heat-treatment performed at 1200°C for 2h produced a transparent LaAlO3/t-ZrO2 nanoceramic with an average grain size of 40nm. Due to the nanoscale microstructure, the composite showed a transparency up to 55% at 800nm (1mm thick), Vickers hardness of 19.05GPa, and fracture toughness of 2.64MPam1/2, respectively. It is expected to be a promising candidate for window materials.

Abstract:Transparent glasses imbedded with functional nanocrystals have attracted considerable interest and been studied widely in the past several decades, due to their applications in optical devices, such as optical amplifiers, nonlinear optical devices, optical storage, 3D displays, etc. Femtosecond (fs) laser irradiation induced crystallization of glass has been proved to be a powerful tool to realize the space-selective precipitation of various nanocrystals inside glasses. In this review, we highlight our recent research achievements on the fs laser induced precipitation of nanocrystals inside glasses, including nonlinear optical crystal, upconversion luminescence crystal, high refractive index crystal, and metal nanoparticles. These studies not only help to understand the interaction process between fs laser and glassy materials, but also have potential applications in the fabrication of micro-optical devices.

Abstract:Transparent glass-ceramics are nanocomposite materials which offer specific characteristics of capital importance in photonics. This kind of two-phase materials is constituted by nanocrystals embedded in a glass matrix and the respective composition and volume fractions of crystalline and amorphous phase determine the properties of the glass-ceramic. Among these properties transparency is crucial, in particular when confined structures, such as dielectric optical waveguides and optical fibers, are considered, and the number of papers devoted to this topic is continuously increasing. Another important point is the role of the nanocrystals when activated by luminescent species, as rare earth ions, and their effect on the spectroscopic properties of the glass-ceramic. The presence of the crystalline environment around the rare earth ion allows high absorption and emission cross sections, reduction of the non-radiative relaxation thanks to the lower phonon cutoff energy, and tailoring of the ion-ion interaction by the control of the rare earth ion partition. This last point is crucial and still object of intense experimental and theoretical studies. The composition of the glass matrix also impacts the properties of the rare earth ions located in nanoparticles. Moreover, some kinds of nanocrystals can play as effective rare earth sensitizers. Fabrication, assessment and application of glass-ceramic photonic systems, especially waveguides, deserve an appropriate discussion which is the aim of this paper, focused on luminescent glass-ceramics. In this work, a brief historical review, consolidated results and recent advances in this important scientific and technological area will be presented, and some perspectives will be outlined.
Hybridization Engineering of Oxyfluoride Aluminosilicate Glass for Construction of Dual‐Phase Optical Ceramics

Abstract:The construction of transparent ceramics under mild conditions under 1000°C and standard atmospheric pressure has great scientific and technological potential; however, it remains difficult to achieve when conventional ceramic sintering techniques are used. Herein, we present a mild strategy for constructing dual‐phase optical ceramics with high crystallinity (>90%) based on the stepped dual‐phase crystallization of hybridized aluminosilicate glass. Theoretical and experimental studies reveal that the hybridization of the glass system enables a new balance between the glass‐forming ability and crystallization and can overcome the uncontrolled devitrification phenomenon during the dense crystallization of glass. Transparent hybridized oxide‐fluoride ceramics with fiber geometry and dual‐phase microstructures are also successfully fabricated. The generality of the strategy is confirmed, and transparent ceramics with various chemical compositions and phase combinations are prepared. Additionally, the cross section of the ceramic fibers can be easily tuned into a circle, square, trapezoid, and even a triangle. Furthermore, the practical applications of the optical ceramics for lighting and X‐ray imaging are demonstrated. Abstract:The crystallization of matter at interfaces has long been a significant issue in science and technology, but surface-directed crystallization with controlled kinetics remains a matter of challenge. Here, we demonstrate a conceptual novel mechanism to steer liquid–solid phase transformation at interfaces by tailoring the chemical and structural inhomogeneity of a glass substrate through self-limited nanocrystallization of the glassy phase. Importantly, this approach enables large-scale development of metastable crystallization products, such as nanowire membranes. The thorough studies of the intermediate stages of crystallization reveal a unique cooperative mechanism in which the intricate interplays between inherent nanoscale forces and unique heterogeneous surfaces contribute to the mesoscale structural transformation from isolated units to superstructures. We further show that the constructed superstructures offer unprecedented opportuntities for the development of functional membrane systems possessing the combination of robust trace-detection performance and molecular trapping function. These findings not only present clear technological implications, but also provide an improved understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of surface-induced geological and biological processes. A glassy surface embedded with zones of crystalline order can spur materials to form nanowires and molecule-trapping membranes on demand. Surface-induced crystallization plays important roles in processes ranging from bone biomineralization to transistor fabrication. Shifeng Zhou from South China University of Technology in Guangzhou and co-workers have reported a great discovery that glass-ceramics surface can help to control liquid-to-solid transformations at interfaces without resorting to chemical treatments or specialized templates. Using thermal treatments, the team precipitated titanium dioxide nanocrystals into an otherwise homogenous inorganic oxide glass. The resulting non-uniform interface created periodic potential field that enabled strict control over crystal nucleation and aggregation. Additional charge imbalances between tiny aggregations guided materials to grow into remarkable superstructures. As a practical example, microporous silver membranes that detect trace amounts of hazardous aromatic vapours were demonstrated. A new surface-directed crystallization mechanism enabled by the chemical and structural inhomogeneity of the glass substrate through self-limited nanocrystallization of glassy phase was proposed and demonstrated. Benefiting from the intricate interplays between nanoscale force and heterogeneous surface, the strategy offers new opportunities in the large-scale development of various metastable crystallization products and also serves practical purpose.

Abstract:A fluorosilicate (FS) nano-crystallized glass ceramic (NGC) is one of the most commonly used gain materials for applications in optical devices due to its excellent thermal stability as well as high-efficiency luminescence. However, FS glass can hardly be used to prepare NGC fibers due to its high preparation temperature. Here, a series of low-temperature fluoro-borosilicate (FBS) glasses were designed for the fabrication of active NGC fibers. By modulating B2O3, the preparation temperature of FBS glass was reduced to 1050 °C, and the crystallization in FBS NGCs was more controllable than in FS NGC. The crystallization of the impure phase was inhibited, and single-phase rare earth (RE)-fluoride nanocrystals were controllably precipitated in the FBS NGCs. The 40Si-20B FBS NGC not only exhibited a higher optical transmittance, but the luminescence efficiency was also much higher than traditional FS NGCs. More importantly, NGC fibers were successfully fabricated by using the designed FBS glass as core glass. Nanocrystals were controllably precipitated and greatly enhanced, and upconversion luminescence was observed in NGC fibers. The designed FBS NGCs provided high-quality optical gain materials and offered opportunities for fabricating a wide range of NGC fibers for multiple future applications, including fiber lasers and sensors.

Abstract:In this study, Gd2O3–Ga2O3-GeO2-Nd2O3 glasses and glass ceramics were synthesized, and their structural, thermal, and crystallization characteristics were analyzed. Our findings indicate that substituting Gd2O3 for Ga2O3 positively influences the enhancement of bridge oxygen content and network structure stability. Heat treatments at different temperatures showed no significant impact on the crystal phase type but did alter the crystallization rate. Optimal conditions were identified: a Gd2O3/Ga2O3 ratio of 0.6 facilitated the production of transparent glass ceramics containing a single-phase GdGaGe2O7 nano-crystal. Notably, the glass ceramic nucleated at 780 °C for 24 h and crystallized at 840 °C for 5 min exhibited superior performance. Despite a 6% reduction in transmission rate, the emission intensity at 1060 nm increased by 1.5 times. This material holds promise for various applications in solid-state lasers operating within the 1.06 μm region.

Abstract:We report on the precipitation of Si nanocrystals inside a borosilicate glass by using an 800nm, 250kHz femtosecond laser irradiation, which was confirmed with X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra and transmission electron microscopy analyses. Refractive index profile reveals that the refractive index of the Si nanocrystals precipitated region increased up to 8.7% in comparison with that of the unirradiated area, leading to a large diffraction efficiency of the fabricated dot structure. Furthermore, the third-order optical nonlinearity of the Si nanocrystals precipitated glass is greatly enhanced based on the Z-scan measurement. These results may find applications for the fabrication diffractive optical devices and optical switches.

Abstract:Tailoring ultrafast light–matter interaction as an enabler to create functional periodic crystalline patterns inside transparent dielectrics is of great scientific and technological significance but remains a tremendous challenge because of plenty of unclarified process details and physical mechanisms. Here, a dynamic process of ultrafast laser‐induced continuous periodic crystallization (CPC) to generate self‐organized crystal arrays (CAs) inside the glass is reported. The crystallite‐seeds induced by ultrafast laser are revealed to offer an auxiliary effect that can initiate and maintain the CPC process, which promises the high‐efficiency writing of CAs. The auxiliary effect originates from photo‐induced defects in the crystallite‐seeds, functions by drastically decreasing the pulse energy threshold for writing CAs, and can be manipulated by tuning the glass compositions and laser parameters. The created CAs are erasable and rewritable, which allows for potential applications in optical information encryption and data storage. This work not only opens up an avenue for creating embedded periodic crystalline patterns with extremely high efficiency but also helps to clarify the dynamics of ultrafast laser nanostructuring inside transparent dielectrics.

Abstract:Transparent nanocrystal-in-glass composite (NGC) comprising functional nanocrystals in transparent inorganic glass creates a new bridging from nano/microscale structure to multifunctional macroscale devices with advanced optical properties. In this review, we outline the key scientific advances in the development of transparent NGC, from the perspectives of fundamental design principles, new synthetic strategies and their substantial progress in advanced optical applications. To generate desired transparent NGC materials, we start with the design principles to describe the transformation process from nano/micro to macro, providing an in-depth insight into the structure-property relationship and the underlying problem in particle binding and network reconstruction in the composite materials. Emerging techniques based on the “top-down” or “bottom-up” strategies have advanced the ability to fabricate nanocomposites with controllable composition, phases, fraction, morphology, spatial distribution, and orientation. We also provide an overview of recent advances in optical applications, including solid-state lighting, high-performance lasers, optical data storage, and fluorescence sensing. The remaining scientific challenges, for example, the important trade-off between functional performance and chemical compatibility when bridging the nanocrystals to transparent NGC and their devices, are also highlighted. Addressing these questions will provide a clear pathway to design and manufacture multifunctional inorganic materials based on these NGC materials.
