Abstract:Further geometry and topology for pseudo-holomorphic curves in complex Grassmannians Gn(CN) are studied. Some curvature pinching theorems for pseudo-holomorphic curves with constant Kahler angles in G(m)(C-N) are obtained, so that the corresponding results for pseudo-holomorphic curves in complex projective spaces are generalized.

Abstract:Let $\Sigma$ be a surface with a symplectic form, let $\phi$ be a symplectomorphism of $\Sigma$, and let $Y$ be the mapping torus of $\phi$. We show that the dimensions of moduli spaces of embedded pseudoholomorphic curves in $\R\times Y$, with cylindrical ends asymptotic to periodic orbits of $\phi$ or multiple covers thereof, are bounded from above by an additive relative index. We deduce some compactness results for these moduli spaces. This paper establishes some of the foundations for a program with Michael Thaddeus, to understand the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology of $Y$ in terms of such pseudoholomorphic curves. Analogues of our results should also hold in three dimensional contact homology.

Holomorphic Curves in Surfaces of General Type.

Abstract:This note answers some questions on holomorphic curves and their distribution in an algebraic surface of positive index. More specifically, we exploit the existence of natural negatively curved "pseudo-Finsler" metrics on a surface S of general type whose Chern numbers satisfy c(2)1>2c2 to show that a holomorphic map of a Riemann surface to S whose image is not in any rational or elliptic curve must satisfy a distance decreasing property with respect to these metrics. We show as a consequence that such a map extends over isolated punctures. So assuming that the Riemann surface is obtained from a compact one of genus q by removing a finite number of points, then the map is actually algebraic and defines a compact holomorphic curve in S. Furthermore, the degree of the curve with respect to a fixed polarization is shown to be bounded above by a multiple of q - 1 irrespective of the map.

Almost holomorphic curves in real analytic hypersurfaces

Abstract:Using the theory of exterior differential systems, we study the existence of germ of pseudo-holomorphic disk in a real analytic hypersurface locally defined in a complex manifold equipped with J a real analytic almost complex structure. The integrable case in C n with J the multiplication by i has been intensively studied by several authors [DF], [DA1] and [DA2] for example. The non integrable case is drastically different essentially due to the following fact : in generic case, there is no J-invariant objects of dimension bigger than one. This simple observation leads to the non existence of some equivalents of Segree varieties or ideals of holomorphic functions which play a fundamental role in the complex case. Nevertheless in the almost complex case, we adopt the exterior differential system point of view of E.Cartan developed and clarified in [BCGGG].

Abstract:A taming symplectic structure provides an upper bound on the area of an approximately pseudoholomorphic curve in terms of its homology class. We prove that, conversely, an almost complex manifold with such an area bound admits a taming symplectic structure. This confirms a speculation by Gromov. We also characterize the cone of taming symplectic structures numerically, prove that complex 2-cycles can be approximated by coarsely holomorphic curves, and provide a lower energy bound for such curves.

Holomorphic Curves in Moduli Spaces Are Quasi-Isometrically Immersed

Abstract:A holomorphic curve in moduli spaces is the image of a non-constant holomorphic map from a hyperbolic surface $B$ of type $(g,n)$ to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_h$ of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $h$. We show that, when all peripheral monodromies are of infinite order, the holomorphic map is a quasi-isometric immersion with parameters depending only on $g$, $n$, $h$ and the systole of $B$. When peripheral monodromies also satisfy an additional condition, we find a lift quasi-isometrically embedding a fundamental polygon of the hyperbolic surface $B$ into the Teichmüller space. We further improve the Parshin-Arakelov finiteness theorem, by proving that there are only finitely many monodromy homomorphisms induced by holomorphic curves of type $(g,n)$ in $\mathcal{M}_h$ where systole is bounded away from $0$, up to equivalence.

Abstract:For an almost complex structure J on U subset of R-4 pseudo-holomorphically fibered over C a J-holomorphic curve C subset of U can be described by a Weierstrass polynomial. The J-holomorphicity equation descends to a perturbed (partial derivative) over bar -operator on the coefficients; the operator is typically (0, 2/m)-Holder continuous if m is the local degree of C over C. This sheds some light on the problem of parametrizing pseudo-holomorphic deformations of J-holomorphic curve singularities.

Abstract:We provide new examples of curves of genus 6 or 10 attaining the Serre bound. They all belong to the family of sextics introduced in [19] as a a generalization of the Wiman sextics [36] and Edge sextics [9]. Our approach is based on a theorem by Kani and Rosen which allows, under certain assumptions, to fully decompose the Jacobian of the curve. With our investigation we are able to update several entries in \url{<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://www.manypoints.org" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>} ([35]).

Abstract:We introduce a type of minimal surface in the pseudo-hyperbolic space H n , n (with n even) or H n + 1 , n − 1 (with n odd) coming from cyclic SO 0 ( n , n + 1 ) -Higg bundles. By showing that these surfaces are saddle-type critical points for the area functional, and hence infinitesimally rigid, we get a new proof, for SO 0 ( n , n + 1 ) , of Labourie's theorem that the holonomy map restricts to an immersion on the cyclic locus of Hitchin base, and extend it to Collier's components. This implies Labourie's former conjecture in the case of the exceptional group G 2 ′ , for which we also show that these minimal surfaces are J -holomorphic curves of a particular type in the almost complex H 4 , 2 .

Counting genus zero real curves in symplectic manifolds

Abstract:There are two types of $J$-holomorphic spheres in a symplectic manifold invariant under an anti-symplectic involution: those that have a fixed point locus and those that do not. The former are described by moduli spaces of $J$-holomorphic disks, which are well studied in the literature. In this paper, we first study moduli spaces describing the latter and then combine the two types of moduli spaces to get a well-defined theory of counting real curves of genus 0. We use equivariant localization to show that these invariants (unlike the disk invariants) are essentially the same for the two (standard) involutions on $\mathbb{P}^{4n-1}$.

Abstract:We prove, for infinitely many values of $g$ and $n$, the existence of non-tautological algebraic cohomology classes on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ of smooth, genus-$g$, $n$-pointed curves. In particular, when $n=0$, our results show that there exist non-tautological algebraic cohomology classes on $\mathcal{M}_g$ for $g=12$ and all $g \geq 16$. These results generalize the work of Graber--Pandharipande and van Zelm, who proved that the classes of particular loci of bielliptic curves are non-tautological and thereby exhibited the only previously-known non-tautological class on any $\mathcal{M}_g$: the bielliptic cycle on $\mathcal{M}_{12}$. We extend their work by using the existence of holomorphic forms on certain moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ to produce non-tautological classes with nontrivial restriction to the interior, via which we conclude that the classes of many new double-cover loci are non-tautological.

Abstract:Putman and Wieland conjectured that if Σ∼→Σ is a finite branched cover between closed oriented surfaces of sufficiently high genus, then the orbits of all nonzero elements of H1(Σ∼;Q) under the action of lifts to Σ∼ of mapping classes on Σ are infinite. We prove that this holds if H1(Σ∼;Q) is generated by the homology classes of lifts of simple closed curves on Σ . We also prove that the subspace of H1(Σ∼;Q) spanned by such lifts is a symplectic subspace. Finally, simple closed curves lie on subsurfaces homeomorphic to 2‐holed spheres, and we prove that H1(Σ∼;Q) is generated by the homology classes of lifts of loops on Σ lying on subsurfaces homeomorphic to 3‐holed spheres.

Abstract:This text is an expanded version of the lectures delivered by the authors at the CIME summer school “Symplectic 4-manifolds and algebraic surfaces,” Cetraro (Italy), September 2–10, 2003. The aim of these lectures were mostly to introduce graduate students to pseudo-holomorphic techniques for the study of isotopy of symplectic submanifolds in dimension four. We tried to keep the style of the lectures by emphasizing the basic reasons for the correctness of a result rather than by providing full details. Essentially none of the content claims any originality, but most of the results are scattered in the literature in sometimes hard-to-read locations. For example, we give a hands-on proof of the smooth parametrization of the space of holomorphic cycles on a complex surface under some positivity assumption. This is usually derived by the big machinery of deformation theory together with Banach-analytic methods. For an uninitiated person it is hard not only to follow the formal arguments needed to deduce the result from places in the literature, but also, and maybe more importantly, to understand whyit is true. While our treatment here has the disadvantage to consider only a particular situation that does not even quite suffice for the proof of the Main Theorem (Theorem 9.1) we hope that it is useful for enhancing the understanding of this result outside the community of hardcore complex analysts and algebraic geometers. The last section discusses the proof of the main theorem, which is also the main result from [SiTi3]. The logic of this proof is a bit difficult, involving several reduction steps and two inductions, and we are not sure if the current presentation really helps in understanding what is going on. Maybe somebody else has to take this up again and add new ideas into streamlining this piece. Finally there is one section on the application to symplectic Lefschetz fibrations. This makes the link to the other lectures of the summer school, notably to those by Auroux and Smith.

Abstract:We prove that pseudoholomorphic curves intersect complex 2-cycles positively in almost complex 4-manifolds. This makes possible a general and conceptually simple proof that an almost complex 4-manifold with many curves admits a taming symplectic structure, as envisioned by Gromov. Furthermore, we prove that the positivity of intersections between pseudoholomorphic curves is stable, in a geometric sense.

Abstract:Given a closed symplectic manifold, we construct invariants which count (a) closed rational pseudoholomorphic curves with prescribed cusp singularities and (b) punctured rational pseudoholomorphic curves with ellipsoidal negative ends. We prove an explicit equivalence between these two frameworks, which in particular gives a new geometric interpretation of various counts in symplectic field theory. We show that these invariants encode important information about singular symplectic curves and stable symplectic embedding obstructions. We also prove a correspondence theorem between rigid unicuspidal curves and perfect exceptional classes, which we illustrate by classifying rigid unicuspidal (symplectic or algebraic) curves in the first Hirzebruch surface.

Abstract:We construct a large new family of rational algebraic curves in the complex projective plane with a (p,q) cusp singularity. More precisely, we classify all such pairs (p,q) for curves which are rigid (in a suitable sense), finding a phase transition from discrete to continuous as the ratio p/q crosses the fourth power of the golden ratio. In particular, for many values of (p,q), our curves solve the minimal degree problem for plane curves with a (p,q) cusp singularity. Our technique relies on (i) explicit bijections between curves in log Calabi-Yau surfaces and curves in nontoric blowups of toric surfaces, (ii) the tropical vertex group and its connections with relative Gromov--Witten invariants, and (iii) recent positivity results for scattering diagrams. As our main application, we completely solve the stabilized symplectic embedding problem for four-dimensional ellipsoids into the four-dimensional round ball. The answer is neatly encoded in a single piecewise smooth function which transitions from an infinite Fibonacci staircase to an explicit rational function. Many of our results also extend to other target spaces, e.g. del Pezzo surfaces and more general rational surfaces.
