Abstract:The charge state of a molecule governs its physicochemical properties, such as conformation, reactivity and aromaticity, with implications for on-surface synthesis, catalysis, photo conversion and applications in molecular electronics. On insulating, multilayer NaCl films we control the charge state of organic molecules and resolve their structures in neutral, cationic, anionic and dianionic states by atomic force microscopy, obtaining atomic resolution and bond-order discrimination using CO functionalized tips. We detect changes in conformation, adsorption geometry and bond-order relations for azobenzene, tetracyanoquinodimethane and pentacene in multiple charge states. Moreover, for porphine we investigate the charge-state-dependent change of aromaticity and conjugation pathway in the macrocycle. This work opens the way to studying chemical-structural changes of individual molecules for a wide range of charge states.

Probing molecular excited states by atomic force microscopy

Abstract:By employing single charge injections with an atomic force microscope, we investigated redox reactions of a molecule on a multilayer insulating film. First, we charged the molecule positively by attaching a single hole. Then we neutralized it by attaching an electron and observed three channels for the neutralization. We rationalize that the three channels correspond to transitions to the neutral ground state, to the lowest energy triplet excited states and to the lowest energy singlet excited states. By single-electron tunneling spectroscopy we measured the energy differences between the transitions obtaining triplet and singlet excited state energies. The experimental values are compared with density functional theory calculations of the excited state energies. Our results show that molecules in excited states can be prepared and that energies of optical gaps can be quantified by controlled single-charge injections. Our work demonstrates the access to, and provides insight into, ubiquitous electron-attachment processes related to excited-state transitions important in electron transfer and molecular optoelectronics phenomena on surfaces.

Abstract:The interplay between the oxidation state and the optical properties of molecules plays a key role for applications in displays, sensors or molecular-based memories. The fundamental mechanisms occurring at the level of a single-molecule have been difficult to probe. We used a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to characterize and control the fluorescence of a single Zn-phthalocyanine radical cation adsorbed on a NaCl-covered Au(111) sample. The neutral and oxidized states of the molecule were identified on the basis of their fluorescence spectra that revealed very different emission energies and vibronic fingerprints. The emission of the charged molecule was controlled by tuning the thickness of the insulator and the plasmons localized at the apex of the STM tip. In addition, sub-nanometric variations of the tip position were used to investigate the charging and electroluminescence mechanisms.

Abstract:Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is a crucial tool, through spin labelling, in investigations of the chemical structure of materials and of the electronic structure of materials associated with unpaired spins. ESR spectra measured in molecular systems, however, are established on large ensembles of spins and usually require a complicated structural analysis. Recently, the combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy with ESR has proved to be a powerful tool to image and coherently control individual atomic spins on surfaces. Here we extend this technique to single coordination complexes-iron phthalocyanines (FePc)-and investigate the magnetic interactions between their molecular spin with either another molecular spin (in FePc-FePc dimers) or an atomic spin (in FePc-Ti pairs). We show that the molecular spin density of FePc is both localized at the central Fe atom and also distributed to the ligands (Pc), which yields a strongly molecular-geometry-dependent exchange coupling.
Charge-state lifetimes of single molecules on ultrathin insulating films

Abstract:In scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments of molecules on insulating films, tunneling through molecular resonances implies transiently charging the molecule. The transition back to the charge ground state by tunneling through the insulating film is crucial, for example, for understanding STM-induced electroluminescence. Here, using STM, we report on the charge-state lifetimes of individual molecules adsorbed on NaCl films of different thicknesses on Cu(111) and Au(111). To that end, we approached the tip to the molecule at resonant tunnel conditions up to a regime where charge transport was limited by tunneling through the NaCl film. The resulting saturation of tunnel current is a direct measure of the molecule's charge-state lifetime, thus providing a means to study charge dynamics and, thereby, exciton dynamics. Comparison of anion and cation lifetimes on different substrates reveals the critical role of the level alignment with the insulator's conduction and valence band, and the metal-insulator interface state.

Here, we extend this technique to demonstrate ESR on single organic molecules - iron phthalocyanine (FePc) - and investigate the magnetic interactions between a molecular spin and either another molecular or atomic spin. We show that the molecular spin density is not only localized at the central Fe atom, but also distributed to the outer ligands, yielding a strongly anisotropic exchange coupling. Our work opens the door for using molecules in nanoscale ESR studies and promises tuning magnetic interactions between non-localized spins via tailoring ligand field symmetry and strength.

Abstract:Intermolecular charge transfer reactions are key processes in physical chemistry. The electron-transfer rates depend on a few system's parameters, such as temperature, electromagnetic field, distance between adsorbates and, especially, the molecular reorganization energy. This microscopic greatness is the energetic cost to rearrange each single$-$molecule and its surrounding environment when a charge is transferred. Reorganization energies are measured by electrochemistry and spectroscopy techniques as well as at the single-molecule limit using atomic force microscopy approaches, but not from temperature$-$dependent charge transport measurements nor in a monolithically$-$integrated molecular device. Nowadays self$-$rolling nanomembrane (rNM) devices, with strain$-$engineered mechanical properties, on$-$a$-$chip monolithic integration, and operable in distinct environments, overcome those challenges. Here, we investigate the charge transfer reactions occurring within a ca. 6 nm thick copper$-$phthalocyanine (CuPc) film employed as electrode-spacer in a monolithically integrated nanocapacitor. Employing the rNM technology allows us to measure the molecules' charge$-$transport dependence on temperature for different electric fields. Thereby, the CuPc reorganization energy is determined as (930 $\pm$ 40) meV, whereas density functional theory (DFT) calculations support our findings with the atomistic picture of the CuPc charge transfer reaction. Our approach presents a consistent route towards electron transfer reaction characterization using current$-$voltage spectroscopy and provides insight into the role of the molecular reorganization energy when it comes to electrochemical nanodevices.

Substrate stabilization of Jahn--Teller distortion in a single molecule

Abstract:Charge-state transitions of a single Cu-phthalocyanine molecule adsorbed on an insulating layer of NaCl on Cu(111) are probed by means of alternate charging scanning tunneling microscopy. Real-space imaging of the electronic transitions reveals the Jahn--Teller distortion occurring upon formation of the first and second anionic charge states. The experimental findings are rationalized by a theoretical many-body model which highlights the crucial role played by the substrate. The latter enhances and stabilizes the intrinsic Jahn--Teller distortion of the negatively charged molecule hosting a degenerate pair of single-particle frontier orbitals. Consequently, two excess electrons are found to occupy, in the ground state, the same localized orbital, despite a larger Coulomb repulsion than the one for the competing delocalized electronic configuration. Control over the charging sequence by varying the applied bias voltage is also predicted.

Structure and Bonding in Alpha-Copper Phthalocyanine by Electron Diffraction.

Abstract:Energy-filtered quantitative electron diffraction at liquid nitrogen temperature has been used to examine the atomic structure and bonding of metastable alpha-Cu phthalocyanine crystals. Three theoretical methods (kinematic, kinematic with excitation errors and Bloch wave) were employed for the intensity calculations. The Bloch-wave method was found to account for dynamical effects by greatly reducing the residual factor between experimental and simulated results. A new method for calculating electron scattering factors for partially charged ions is proposed and the sensitivity of electron diffraction to charge transfer is discussed. The atomic charge states were analyzed for alpha-Cu phthalocyanine using a charge cloud model in which the Gaussian bond charge is positioned along the bonds. Spot patterns were collected in the Kohler mode at two beam energies to reduce error. Using the best-fitting model, a deformation charge-density map is produced and compared to the neutral-atom model. From this, the main features of atomic charge transfer in the alpha-Cu phthalocyanine structure can be seen in the (010) plane.

Abstract:Purpose of reviewThis article reviews the features of cyclical hypercortisolism. This syndrome was once considered to be very rare but is now being increasingly recognized. Recent findingsEither true cycles or the variant of episodic and fluctuating levels of hypercortisolism can lead to considerable clinical dilemmas, which are discussed. The review details possible pathophysiological mechanisms and the effects of centrally acting drugs. SummaryCyclical Cushing's syndrome is a pattern of hypercortisolism in which the biochemistry of cortisol production fluctuates rhythmically. This syndrome is often associated with fluctuating symptoms and signs. This type of case was initially thought to be rare. It has, however, recently been recognized as occurring much more frequently. The phenomenon is important because it can, if not recognized, lead to errors in diagnosis and differential diagnosis of the syndrome and in assessment of therapeutic outcomes. All of these can have very serious clinical consequences. Clinical researchers, including ourselves, have developed criteria, protocols and dynamic biochemical tools to detect cycling in patients with hypercortisolism. Unfortunately, the mechanisms causing the abnormal pathophysiology have not been well elucidated but some recent insights have been gained. The review discusses strategies for diagnosing and managing this important subgroup of patients with hypercortisolism.

Abstract:A central idea in electron-transfer theories is the coupling of the electronic state of a molecule to its structure. Here we show experimentally that fine changes to molecular structures by mechanically stretching a single metal complex molecule via changing the metal-ligand bond length can shift its electronic energy levels and predictably guide electron-transfer reactions, leading to the changes in redox state. We monitor the redox state of the molecule by tracking its characteristic conductance, determine the shift in the redox potential due to mechanical stretching of the metal-ligand bond, and perform model calculations to provide insights into the observations. The work reveals that a mechanical force can shift the redox potential of a molecule, change its redox state, and thus allow the manipulation of single molecule conductance.

Abstract:LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622) undergoes crystallographic and electronic changes when charging and discharging, which drive the cathode material close to or even beyond its stability window. To unravel the charge compensation mechanism of NCM622, spatially resolved atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements in electrochemical strain microscopy (ESM) and conductive AFM (C-AFM) modes are obtained, and the spectroscopic information and crystallographic information are compared. All experiments are performed with two sets of samples: state-of-the-art samples that are composed of a binder, a conductive additive, and an active material and polished samples for single-particle analysis. Near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy shows that ionic Ni2+ reacts to give Ni3+ when charging and forms covalent bonds with its oxygen neighbors. A Ni2+/Ni3+ gradient across the particles balances out with the increasing state of charge, as verified by ESM. Therefore, the results also provide an important view that improves the mechanistic understanding of ESM in electrode materials. Finally, the interplay between the electronic and ionic conductivities and the crystallinities of NCM622 cathodes is elaborated and discussed.

Abstract:Significance Charge transfer plays a fundamental role in many areas of chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science. The spatial redistribution of electrons is typically associated with changes in the molecular geometry. A comprehensive understanding of this process requires atomic spatial resolution and femtosecond temporal resolution. Here, we exploit an X-ray free-electron laser to determine the excited-state structures during charge transfer with sub-Ångström resolution. Important behaviors such as bond elongation and contraction and reorientation of functional groups during the charge transfer are discovered, demonstrating the substantial information on excited-state molecular structure that becomes accessible through ultrafast X-ray scattering measurements.

Abstract:Charge states of lanthanide double-decker phthalocyanines complexes significantly influence their geometrical structures and magnetic properties. In this study, the charge states of single DyPc2 molecules on an ultrathin CuO film were detected by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy in magnetic fields. Four types of adsorptions of DyPc2 molecules on CuO were experimentally observed. Without applying voltages, two of them were positively charged with the other two at the neutral state. By controlling the sample bias, two types of neutral molecules can be switched to the positively and negatively charged states, respectively. This manipulation was not realized for the DyPc2 cations. A way to precisely detect the molecular charge states with and without current is beneficial for the development of molecular electronics.

Abstract:Recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments on electron transport through iron(ii) phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules adsorbed on Au(111) surfaces have revealed that the measured differential conductance signals can be modulated through a selective dehydrogenation process [R. Li et al., Chem. Commun. 54, 9135 (2018)]. To understand the physical origin of the variation of line shapes in the measured dI/dV spectra, we employ a first-principles-based quantum transport simulation to calculate the electronic structures and transport properties in the dehydrogenated FePc/Au(111) composite system. Theoretical results indicate that the removal of eight outermost hydrogen atoms in the FePc molecule distorts the planar molecular conformation by increasing the distance between the Fe center and substrate and thus breaks the ligand field exerted on the Fe 3d orbitals. Such variations lead to a weaker coupling with the substrate along with a different local electronic configuration of the Fe center compared with that of the intact case, which is responsible for the suppression of Kondo resonance and the appearance of spin-flip excitation in the system. The simulated dI/dV plots are consistent with the experimental observations, showing the typical step features at finite bias associated with spin-flip excitations of a spin-1 quantum magnet. These findings provide important insights into the electron correlation effects modulated by the structural and chemical environment of the molecular spin center.

Abstract:The correlation of thin films structure and orientation of small organic molecules with the physical properties like charge carrier transport is not only important for basic understanding but also crucial for various application as functional devices. Small organic semiconductor molecules assemble in different configuration in thin films resulting in exhibiting a wide variety of optoelectronic properties. Here, we have investigated the structure of thin films of three metal phthalocyanines (MPcs) having a metal ion as Cu, Co, and Ni using a combination of x-ray scattering techniques and microscopic images. The x-ray results reveal that the molecules assemble in sticklike nanograins of well-ordered structure on Si surface. These nanograins packed differently for three different metal ions and CuPc growth are more of a columnar type whereas NiPc form much smoother films. The I−V measurements reveal higher conductivity for the thinner films, both under optical illumination and dark condition, in contrary to the normal convention. This observation was explained in terms of the transport of carriers through the region of trapped charge states in the ordered phase of the nanograins and the porous region between the grains resulting in different threshold voltages for differently ordered films. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevMaterials.8.024601 ©2024 American Physical Society

Field-induced Conductance Switching by Charge-state Alternation in Organometallic Single-Molecule Junctions

Abstract:Charge transport through single molecules can be influenced by the charge and spin states of redox-active metal centres placed in the transport pathway. These molecular intrinsic properties are usually addressed by varying the molecules electrochemical and magnetic environment, a procedure that requires complex setups with multiple terminals. Here we show that oxidation and reduction of organometallic compounds containing either Fe, Ru or Mo centres can solely be triggered by the electric field applied to a two-terminal molecular junction. Whereas all compounds exhibit bias-dependent hysteresis, the Mo-containing compound additionally shows an abrupt voltage-induced conductance switching, yielding high to low current ratios exceeding 1000 at voltage stimuli of less than 1.0 V. DFT calculations identify a localized, redox active molecular orbital that is weakly coupled to the electrodes and closely aligned with the Fermi energy of the leads because of the spin-polarised ground state unique to the Mo centre. This situation opens an additional slow and incoherent hopping channel for transport, triggering a transient charging effect of the entire molecule and a strong hysteresis with unprecedented high low-to-high current ratios.

Abstract:Work function plays a significant role in surface chemistry. Local work function provides the information of local dipole-dipole interaction and charge distribution between adsorbates and substrate, highlighting the local charge effect of the targeted spot which is normally smeared out in conventional average work function measurements. Chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (ClAlPc), an important optoelectronic molecule with a permanent dipole moment pointing from the Pc ring to the ending Cl atom, adsorbed on Au(111) in either Cl-up or Cl-down configuration. Scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements revealed that at the centers of Cl-up and Cl-down molecules, the local work functions changed oppositely with respect to the Au(111) substrate. At their Pc lobes, however, the local work functions unanimously increased due to charging effect of the indole lobes in the ClAlPc molecule.

The molecular specimen will be held on a free-standing sheet of graphene. Due to the high conductivity of graphene, electrons lost by ionization would be rapidly replaced, enabling repeated nondestructive interrogation. Limits of resolution, maximum particle size and required electron flux are assessed.

Abstract:Acquiring quantitative information on charge transfer (CT) dynamics at the nanoscale remains an important scientific challenge. In particular, CT processes in single molecules at surfaces needs to be investigated to be properly controlled in various devices. To address this issue, the dynamics of switching molecules can be exploited. Here, a Nickel-tetraphenylporphyrin adsorbed on the Si(100) surface is used to study the CT process ruling the reversible activation of two chiral molecular conformations. Via the electrons of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), a statistical study of the molecular switching reveals two specific locations of the molecule for which their efficiency is optimized. The CT mechanism is shown to propagate from two lateral aryls groups towards the porphyrin macrocycle inducing an intramolecular movement of two symmetric pyrroles. The measured switching efficiencies can thus be related with a Markus-Jordner model to estimate relevant parameters that describe the dynamics of the CT process. Numerical simulations provide a precise description of the molecular conformations and unveil the molecular energy levels that are involved in the CT process. This quantitative method opens a completely original approach to study CT at the nanoscale.
