Abstract:Atoms start behaving as waves rather than classical particles if confined in spaces commensurate with their de Broglie wavelength. At room temperature this length is only about one ångström even for the lightest atom, hydrogen. This restricts quantum-confinement phenomena for atomic species to the realm of very low temperatures1–5. Here, we show that van der Waals gaps between atomic planes of layered crystals provide ångström-size channels that make quantum confinement of protons apparent even at room temperature. Our transport measurements show that thermal protons experience a notably higher barrier than deuterons when entering van der Waals gaps in hexagonal boron nitride and molybdenum disulfide. This is attributed to the difference in the de Broglie wavelengths of the isotopes. Once inside the crystals, transport of both isotopes can be described by classical diffusion, albeit with unexpectedly fast rates comparable to that of protons in water. The demonstrated ångström-size channels can be exploited for further studies of atomistic quantum confinement and, if the technology can be scaled up, for sieving hydrogen isotopes.

Abstract:Comprehensive knowledge of physical properties such as equation of state (EOS), proton exchange, dynamic structures, diffusion coefficients, and viscosities of hydrogen-deuterium mixtures with densities from 0.1 to 5 g/cm^{3} and temperatures from 1 to 50 kK has been presented via quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations. The existing multi-shock experimental EOS provides an important benchmark to evaluate exchange-correlation functionals. The comparison of simulations with experiments indicates that a nonlocal van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF1) produces excellent results. Fraction analysis of molecules using a weighted integral over pair distribution functions was performed. A dissociation diagram together with a boundary where the proton exchange (H_{2}+D_{2}⇌2HD) occurs was generated, which shows evidence that the HD molecules form as the H_{2} and D_{2} molecules are almost 50% dissociated. The mechanism of proton exchange can be interpreted as a process of dissociation followed by recombination. The ionic structures at extreme conditions were analyzed by the effective coordination number model. High-order cluster, circle, and chain structures can be founded in the strongly coupled warm dense regime. The present QMD diffusion coefficient and viscosity can be used to benchmark two analytical one-component plasma (OCP) models: the Coulomb and Yukawa OCP models.
Hydrogenation Facilitates Proton Transfer Through Two-Dimensional Honeycomb Crystals

Abstract:Recent experiments have triggered a debate about the ability of protons to transfer easily through individual layers of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). However, state-of-the-art computer calculations have shown that the barriers to proton penetration can, at >3 eV, be excessively high. Despite considerable interest the origin of this apparent anomaly between experiment and simulation remains unclear. We offer a new perspective on this debate and show on the basis of first-principles calculations that the barrier for proton penetration is significantly reduced, to <1 eV, upon hydrogenation, even in the absence of pinholes in the lattice. Although hydrogenation has not been offered as an explanation before, analysis reveals that the barrier is reduced because hydrogenation destabilizes the initial state (a deep-lying chemisorption state) and expands the honeycomb lattice through which the protons penetrate. This study offers a rationalization of the fast proton transfer observed in experiments and highlights the ability of proton transport through single-layer materials in hydrogen-rich solutions.
Hydrogen Transport Between Layers of Transition Metal-Dichalcogenides

Abstract:Hydrogen is a crucial source of green energy and has been extensively studied for its potential usage in fuel cells. The advent of two-dimensional crystals (2DCs) has taken hydrogen research to new heights, enabling it to tunnel through layers of 2DCs or be transported within voids between the layers, as demonstrated in recent experiments by Geim's group. In this study, we investigate how the composition and stacking of transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) layers influence the transport and self-diffusion coefficients (D) of hydrogen atoms using well-tempered metadynamics simulations. Our findings show that modifying either the transition metal or the chalcogen atoms significantly affects the free energy barriers (Delta F) and, consequently, the self-diffusion of hydrogen atoms between the 2DC layers. In the Hh polytype (2H stacking), MoSe2 exhibits the lowest Delta F, while WS2 has the highest, resulting in the largest D for the former system. Additionally, hydrogen atoms inside the RhM (or 3R) polytype encounter more than twice lower energy barriers and, thus, much higher diffusivity compared to those within the most stable Hh stacking. These findings are particularly significant when investigating twisted layers or homo- or heterostructures, as different stacking areas may dominate over others, potentially leading to directional transport and interesting materials for ion or atom sieving.

Sieving hydrogen isotopes through two dimensional crystals

Abstract:One-atom-thick crystals are impermeable to atoms and molecules, but hydrogen ions (thermal protons) penetrate through them. We show that monolayers of graphene and boron nitride can be used to separate hydrogen ion isotopes. Employing electrical measurements and mass spectrometry, we find that deuterons permeate through these crystals much slower than protons, resulting in a separation factor of ~10 at room temperature. The isotope effect is attributed to a difference of about 60 meV between zero-point energies of incident protons and deuterons, which translates into the equivalent difference in the activation barriers posed by two dimensional crystals. In addition to providing insight into the proton transport mechanism, the demonstrated approach offers a competitive and scalable way for hydrogen isotope enrichment.

High-throughput Computing for Hydrogen Transport Properties in Ε-Zrh2

Abstract:In the zirconium-based composites, the transport properties of hydrogen atoms directly affect the precipitation process of the ε-ZrH2 phase. Therefore, the mechanism behind this phenomenon was explored by applying first-principle calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT). For the first time, the diffusion model of hydrogen (H) in the body-centered tetragonal (BCT) structure of ε-ZrH2 was established. The high-throughput calculation results show that the diffusion coefficient is greatly affected by high temperatures. The pressure changes the structure to tetragonal distortion and increases the energy barrier of diffusion and decreases the diffusion coefficient. Y and Gd atoms have a repulsive effect on hydrogen atoms; this will increase the activation energy and diffusion coefficient and reduce the mobility of hydrogen atoms. The solute elements Cr, Fe, Nb, and Si increase the diffusion coefficient, while Ti, Ni, Y, Pt, and Gd decrease. These influence trends are closely related to the atomic radius by Spearman correlation coefficients analysis. This research provides a reference for the design of nuclear material cladding. The transport properties of H atoms in the ε-ZrH2 precipitated phase were calculated using high-throughput first-principles calculations, taking into account the effects of temperature and pressure as well as doping elements.

Abstract:The use of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as a material for hydrogen storage is attributed to its ability to accommodate atomic and molecular hydrogen. However, the low diffusion barrier of molecular hydrogen within the h-BN structure does not fully explain the long-term stability of hydrogen bubbles observed in experimental work [L. He, H. Wang, L. We employed DFT within the rPBE (DFT-D3(0)) functional to suggest a process for the penetration of atomic hydrogen through the h-BN sheet along the normal direction by sequential hydrogen passivation.
Thermal expansion, lattice vibration, and isotope effect on hydrogen diffusion in BCC Fe, Cr, and W from first-principles calculations

Abstract:Fe, Cr, and W are important elements in the alloys of in-reactor materials and operate in high-temperature environments with thermal expansion. Their tritium-impeding abilities are crucial to the radiation safety of various nuclear reactors. In this study, first-principles density functional theory is combined with quasi-harmonic approximation to evaluate factors that can affect the interstitial formation energy and diffusion coefficient of hydrogen isotopes in body-centered cubic (BCC) Fe, Cr, and W, including thermal expansion, metal host lattice vibrations, phonon density-of-states (pDOS) coupling diffusing atoms, and isotope effects. Calculation results indicate that the interstitial formation energy decreases as lattice expansion increases, whereas the jump barriers remain almost constant. Thermal expansion, host lattice vibration, and pDOS coupling minimally affect the diffusion coefficients of hydrogen isotopes in Fe, Cr, and W. The diffusion coefficient ratios between hydrogen isotopes are higher than the inverse ratio of the square root of the isotope mass at low temperatures. However, they decrease to the inverse ratio of the square root of the isotope mass at temperatures exceeding 800 K. This study comprehensively investigates factors that affect the diffusion coefficients of hydrogen isotopes in BCC Fe, Cr, and W, thus providing a firm theoretical foundation for predicting the diffusion coefficients of tritium at different temperatures using protium/deuterium diffusion coefficients.
Dissolution, diffusion and permeation behavior of hydrogen in vanadium: a first-principles investigation

Abstract:Employing a first-principles method, we have studied the stability, diffusivity, and permeation properties of hydrogen (H) and its isotopes in bcc vanadium (V). A single H atom is found to favor the tetrahedral interstitial site (TIS) in V. The charge density distribution exhibits a strong interaction between H and its neighbor V atoms. Analysis of DOS and Bader charge reveals that the occupation number of H-induced low energy states is directly associated with the stability of H in V. Further, H is shown to diffuse between the neighboring TISs with a diffusion barrier of 0.07 eV. Diffusion coefficients and permeabilities of H isotopes in V are estimated with empirical theory. At a typical temperature of 800 K, the diffusion coefficient and the permeability of H are 2.48 × 10(-4) cm(2) s(-1) and 2.19 × 10(-9) mol m(-1) s(-1) Pa(- 1/2), respectively.

Abstract:Graphene is impermeable to all gases and liquids, and even such a small atom as hydrogen is not expected to penetrate through graphene's dense electronic cloud within billions of years. Here we show that monolayers of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are unexpectedly permeable to thermal protons, hydrogen ions under ambient conditions. As a reference, no proton transport could be detected for a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide, bilayer graphene or multilayer hBN. At room temperature, monolayer hBN exhibits the highest proton conductivity with a low activation energy of about 0.3 eV but graphene becomes a better conductor at elevated temperatures such that its resistivity to proton flow is estimated to fall below 10^-3 Ohm per cm2 above 250 C. The proton barriers can be further reduced by decorating monolayers with catalytic nanoparticles. These atomically thin proton conductors could be of interest for many hydrogen-based technologies.

High temperature stability and transport characteristics of hydrogen in alumina via multiscale computation

Abstract:The impact of hydrogen charge states on the stability and transport characteristics of hydrogen interstitials in alumina polymorphs is evaluated by multiscale computational methods including density functional theory (DFT), ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and machine learned force fields. Thermodynamic calculations show that the protonic H i +1 interstitial is the most stable defect species for most values of the electronic bandgap in both α and amorphous alumina (Al 2 O 3 ). Further, active learned Gaussian approximation potentials (GAP) were developed using AIMD data to study temperature dependent long time proton diffusion in alumina. Diffusivity calculations from GAP-MD simulations are found to be comparable with of the AIMD data, while being ∼340 times faster and scalable to larger systems. Comparisons with diffusivity values for other interstitial charge states (H i 0 and H i −1 ) and published experimental literature indicate that H i +1 diffusion is the likely mechanism of hydrogen transport. A good agreement is obtained between H i +1 diffusivity calculated in α -Al 2 O 3 from DFT: 5.05 × 10 −3 exp(-0.81 eV/k B /T) cm 2 /s and reported experiment: 9.7 ×10 −4 exp(-0.83 eV/k B /T) cm 2 /s. Computationally and experimentally calculated energy barriers (0.81 and 0.83 eV respectively) only differ by 2.5%. Similarly, the pre-exponential diffusion coefficients only differ by 0.5 orders of magnitude. Moreover, the diffusivity of H i +1 in amorphous Al 2 O 3 in the 1000–2000 K range is calculated to be 2.53 × 10 −2 exp(-0.89 eV/k B /T), just one order of magnitude higher than the corresponding value in α -Al 2 O 3 . This suggests that local structural disorder does not significantly affect the energy landscape and diffusion behavior of H i +1 in Al 2 O 3 . Overall, these results show promise for the application of alumina polymorphs as hydrogen permeation barriers.

Abstract:With the subatomic selectivity, two-dimensional (2D) crystals can efficiently separate hydrogen ion isotopes, which are expected to improve the separation performance for hydrogen ion isotopes in solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) electrolysis. In this study, the effects of monolayer graphene (MLG) and monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on the penetration barriers and the separation factors of hydrogen isotopes under SPE electrolysis environment were discussed using density functional theory (DFT). The model of "sandwich" structured membrane was established to calculate the penetration barriers, and the effects of penetration path, aqueous environment, size, and Stone-Wales 55-77 (SW (55-77)) defect were discussed. By comparing the penetration barriers of the penetration paths, it was found that hydrogen ion isotopes could perpendicularly pass through the geometric center of the 2D crystal preferentially. The values of penetration barriers were calculated to be 1.45 eV and 0.65 eV for MLG and h-BN in vacuum environment, respectively, and they would be further slightly increased to 1.65 eV for MLG and 0.95 eV for h-BN in an aqueous environment. However, the existence of SW (55-77) defect in MLG and h-BN was found to noticeably reduce their penetration barriers to 0.78 eV and 0.32 eV, respectively. Additionally, the separation factors of H+/D+ and H+/T+ were estimated as 11–12 and 33–34 for MLG, 17–18 and 57–61 for h-BN, respectively. These calculating results indicate that 2D materials would significantly increase the separation factors of hydrogen ion isotopes in the SPE electrolysis compared with the traditional SPE electrolysis (H+/D+~2, H+/T+~12), which would advance the establishment of highly efficient hydrogen isotopes separation technology.

Abstract:The combined experimental and theoretical study of intrinsic hydrogen diffusion on bridge-bonded oxygen (BBO) rows of TiO 2(110) is presented. Sequences of isothermal scanning tunneling microscopy images demonstrate a complex behavior of hydrogen formed by water dissociation on BBO vacancies. Different diffusion rates are observed for the two hydrogens in the original geminate OH pair suggesting the presence of a long-lived polaronic state. For the case of separated hydroxyls, both theory and experiment yield comparable temperature-dependent diffusion rates. Density functional theory calculations show that there are two comparable low energy diffusion pathways for hydrogen motion along the BBO from one BBO to its neighbor, one by a direct hop and the other by an intermediate minimum at a terrace O. The values of kinetic parameters (prefactors and diffusion barriers) determined experimentally and theoretically are significantly different and indicate the presence of a more complex diffusion mechanism. We speculate that the hydrogen diffusion proceeds via a two-step mechanism: the initial diffusion of localized charge, followed by the diffusion of hydrogen. Both experiment and theory show the presence of repulsive OH-OH interactions.
Hydrogen diffusion in garnet: insights from atomistic simulations

Abstract:Garnet has been widely used to decipher the pressure-temperature-time history of rocks, but its physical properties such as elasticity and diffusion are strongly affected by trace amounts of hydrogen. Experimental measurements of H diffusion in garnet are limited to room pressure. We use atomistic simulations to study H diffusion in perfect and defective garnet lattices, focusing on protonation defects at the Si and Mg sites, which are shown to be energetically favored. The ab-initio simulation of H diffusion is computationally challenging due to a transient trapping of H, which is overcome with machine learning techniques by training a deep neural network that encodes the interatomic potential. Our results show high mobility of hydrogen in defect free garnet lattices, whereas H diffusivity is significantly diminished in defective lattices. Tracer simulation focusing on H alone highlights the vital role of atomic vibrations of heavier atoms like Mg in the untrapping of H atoms. Two regimes of H diffusion are identified: a diffuser-dominated regime at high hydrogen content with low activation energies, due to saturation of vacancies by hydrogen, and a vacancy-dominated regime at low hydrogen content with high activation energies, due to trapping of H atoms at vacancy sites. These regimes account for experimental observations, such as a H-concentration dependent diffusivity and the discrepancy in activation energy between deprotonation and D-H exchange experiments. This study underpins the crucial role of vacancies in H diffusion and demonstrates the utility of machine-learned interatomic potentials in studying kinetic processes in the Earth's interior.

Quantum Tunneling of Thermal Protons Through Pristine Graphene

Abstract:Atomically thin two-dimensional materials such as graphene and hexagonal boron nitride have recently been found to exhibit appreciable permeability to thermal protons, making these materials emerging candidates for separation technologies [S. Hu et al., Nature 516, 227 (2014); M. Lozada-Hidalgo et al., Science 351, 68 (2016).]. These remarkable findings remain unexplained by density-functional electronic structure calculations, which instead yield barriers that exceed by 1.0 eV those found in experiments. Here we resolve this puzzle by demonstrating that the proton transfer through pristine graphene is driven by quantum nuclear effects, which substantially reduce the transport barrier by up to 1.4 eV compared to the results of classical molecular dynamics (MD). Our Feynman-Kac path-integral MD simulations unambiguously reveal the quantum tunneling mechanism of strongly interacting hydrogen ions through two-dimensional materials. In addition, we predict a strong isotope effect of 1 eV on the transport barrier for graphene in vacuum and at room temperature. These findings not only shed light on the graphene permeability to protons and deuterons, but also offer new insights for controlling the underlying quantum ion transport mechanisms in nanostructured separation membranes.

Inverse spillover and dimensionality effects on interstitial hydrogen

Abstract:Nanoscaling interstitial metal hydrides offers opportunities for hydrogenation applications by enhancing kinetics, increasing surface area, and allowing for tunable properties. The introduction of interfaces impacts hydrogen absorption properties and distribution heterogeneously, making it however challenging to examine the multiple concurrent mechanisms, especially at the atomic level. Here we demonstrate the effect of proximity on interstitial hydrogen in ultrathin single crystalline vanadium films, by comparing hydride formation in identically strained Fe/V- and Cr/V-superlattices. Pressure concentration and excess resistivity isotherms show higher absolute solubility of hydrogen, higher critical temperature and concentration in the Cr/V-superlattice. Direct measurements of hydrogen site location and thermal vibrations show identical occupation of octahedral z sites at room temperature with a vibrational amplitude of 0.20-0.25 Å over a wide range of hydrogen concentrations. Our findings are consistent with a more extended region of hydrogen depletion in the vicinity of Fe compared to Cr, which showcases an inverse of the hydrogen spillover effect. Advancing the understanding of interface effects resolves previously puzzling differences in the hydrogen loading of Fe/V- and Cr/V-superlattices and is relevant for advancing both catalysis and storage.

Trapping Hydrogen Molecules Between Perfect Graphene.

Abstract:There is a lack of deep understanding of hydrogen intercalation into graphite due to many challenges faced during characterization of the systems. Therefore, a suitable route to trap isolated hydrogen molecules (H2) between the perfect graphite lattices needs to be found. Here we realize the formation of hydrogen bubbles in graphite with controllable density, size, and layer number. We find that the molecular H2 cannot be diffused between nor escape from the defect-free graphene lattices, and it remains stable in the pressurized bubbles up to 400 °C. The internal pressure of H2 inside the bubbles is strongly temperature dependent, and it decreases as the temperature rises. The proton permeation rate can be estimated at a specific plasma power. The producing method of H2 bubbles offers a useful way for storing hydrogen in layered materials, and these materials provide a prospective research platform for studying nontrivial quantum effects in confined H2.

Abstract:The reported diffusion constants for hydrogen in silicon vary over six orders of magnitude. This spread in measured values is caused by the different concentrations of defects in the silicon that has been studied. Hydrogen diffusion is slowed down as it interacts with impurities. By changing the material properties such as the crystallinity, doping type and impurity concentrations, the diffusivity of hydrogen can be changed by several orders of magnitude. In this study the influence of the hydrogen concentration on the temperature dependence of the diffusion in high energy proton implanted silicon is investigated. We show that the Arrhenius parameters, which describe this temperature dependence decrease with increasing hydrogen concentration. We propose a model where the relevant defects that mediate hydrogen diffusion become saturated with hydrogen at high concentrations. When the defects that provide hydrogen with the lowest energy positions in the lattice are saturated, hydrogen resides at energetically less favorable positions and this increases the diffusion of hydrogen through the crystal. Furthermore, we present a survey of different studies on the diffusion of hydrogen. We observed a correlation of the Arrhenius parameters calculated in those studies, leading to a modification of the Arrhenius equation for the diffusion of hydrogen in silicon.

Abstract:Metal hydrides, such as those containing Pd, Ni and Mg, are being considered as potential candidates for hydrogen storage applications. The sluggish hydrogen uptake/release in such materials at ambient conditions presents a major issue. The timescales are dictated mainly by diffusion, as it is usually the rate-controlling step. In order to identify practical strategies for improving the kinetics, one must therefore gain an atomistic-scale understanding of the hydrogen diffusion, which is generally lacking from experiments. We address this gap by analyzing the hydrogen hopping mechanism and the associated barriers in two million different hydrogen configurations in NiH x (x = 0–1) using computational techniques. A distribution of hopping barriers is observed. The barriers lie between 0.3–0.7 eV. Three factors, namely, the short- and long-range hydrogen arrangement and the hydrogen concentration influence the barrier. We also show that depending on these factors, two different H hopping mechanisms may prevail. At higher H concentration, the lattice expands by as much as 19 % by volume, making it easier for the hydrogen atom to hop. Therefore, hydrogen diffusion is sluggish in the initial α phase, which may explain the experimentally-observed induction behavior. This study highlights the complexity associated with the metal hydride systems and provides the basis for further molecular scale kinetic studies of metal hydride systems.

Abstract:Graphene-based nanostructures loaded with transitional metallic atoms have been identified as promising materials for hydrogen storage. In this study, we investigate the adsorption and spillover of hydrogen on a single transitional metal atom incorporated graphene (TM-Gr) through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Specifically, we explore the geometric and electronic properties of 20 different TM-Gr structures. Our findings reveal that Y-Gr and Sc-Gr exhibit the most favorable H atom adsorption, while Mn-Gr and Cr-Gr are more suitable for H spillover. Additionally, feature importance analysis highlights that Bader charge accumulated in H atom, C-H bond length, and work function of TM-Gr are the three most important features that are sensitive to the activation energy of H spillover. Overall, this work provides valuable insights for the screening of new materials for hydrogen storage.Graphical Abstract
